The cross sections of 89Y(n, 3n)87m,87gY and 209Bi(n, 4n)206Bi reactions at a neutron energy of 30 MeV are measured by making use of neutron beams of continuous energy spectra and a subtraction method. By impinging proton beams of 30 and 35 MeV to a thick beryllium target, neutron beams of continuous and broad energy spectra are produced and are guided to Y and Bi sample targets. The difference between the two neutron spectra generated by two neighboring proton energies is found to be peaked in a narrow energy range and thus can be regarded as quasi-monoenergetic, which can be used to extract (n, xn) cross sections. The uncertainty in the neutron fluence is reduced by analyzing the activities of aluminum and niobium reference samples placed on top of the Y and Bi samples. The use of a subtraction method by employing neutron beams of continuous energy spectra gives us the 89Y(n, 3n)87m,87gY and 209Bi(n, 4n)206Bi cross sections in fair agreement with the existing experimental data and nuclear data libraries.

Digitaria ciliaris is widely reported to be a problematic weed in agricultural areas and is mainly used as an indicator plant for the development of herbicides. However, its bioactivities on skin regeneration and wound healing have not been investigated. In the present study, we investigated the effects of D. ciliaris flower absolute on skin wound healing and skin regeneration-related events, that is, proliferation, migration, and collagen biosynthesis, in human fibroblasts and keratinocytes. For this study, we extracted absolute from the D. ciliaris flower by solvent extraction and identified the composition of D. ciliaris flower absolute using GC/MS analysis. We also tested the effect of D. ciliaris flower absolute in CCD986sk fibroblasts and/or HaCaT keratinocytes using the WST assay and 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine incorporation assay, Boyden chamber assay, ELISA, sprouting assay, and immunoblotting. GC/MS analysis of D. ciliaris flower absolute revealed that it contained 15 compounds. The absolute increased the proliferations of keratinocytes and fibroblasts and the migration of fibroblasts but did not affect cell viabilities. In addition, it enhanced the syntheses of type I and IV collagen in fibroblasts, but not in keratinocytes. The sprouting assay showed increased sprout outgrowth of fibroblasts. In addition, D. ciliaris flower absolute induced the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase in fibroblasts. These results indicate that D. ciliaris flower absolute may promote skin wound healing/regeneration by inducing the proliferation, migration, and collagen synthesis of fibroblasts, as well as the proliferation of keratinocytes. Therefore, D. ciliaris flower absolute may be a potential natural source for cosmetic or pharmaceutical agents that promote skin wound healing/regeneration.

Angelica polymorpha Maxim. (APM) is used in traditional medicine to treat chronic gastritis, rheumatic pain, and duodenal bulbar ulcers. However, it is not known whether APM has epidermis-associated biological activities. Here, we investigated the effects of APM flower absolute (APMFAb) on responses associated with skin wound healing and whitening using epidermal cells. APMFAb was obtained by solvent extraction and its composition was analyzed by GC/MS. Water-soluble tetrazolium salt, 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine incorporation, Boyden chamber, sprouting, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and immunoblotting were used to examine the effects of APMFAb on HaCaT keratinocytes and B16BL6 melanoma cells. APMFAb contained five compounds and induced keratinocyte migration, proliferation, and type IV collagen synthesis. APMFAb also induced the phosphorylations of ERK1/2, JNK, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase, and AKT in keratinocytes. In addition, APMFAb decreased serum-induced B16BL6 cell proliferation and inhibited tyrosinase expression, melanin contents, and microphthalmia-associated transcription factor expression in α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone-stimulated B16BL6 cells. These findings demonstrate that APMFAb has beneficial effects on skin wound healing by promoting the proliferation, migration, and collagen synthesis of keratinocytes and on skin whitening by inhibiting melanin synthesis in melanoma cells. Therefore, we suggest that APMFAb has potential use as a wound healing and skin whitening agent.

Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens (MSP, flame grass) is found in Korea, Japan, and China, and its biological activities include anti-cancer, detoxifying, vasodilatory, antipyretic, and diuretic effects. However, no study has investigated the effects of MSP on skin-related biological activities. In this study, we explored the effects of the absolute extracted from the MSP flowers (MSPFAb) on skin wound healing- and whitening-related responses in keratinocytes or melanocytes. MSPFAb contained 6 components and induced the proliferation, migration, and syntheses of type I and IV collagens in keratinocytes. MSPFAb also increased the phosphorylations of serine/threonine-specific protein kinase, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase, and extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 in keratinocytes. In addition, treatment with MSPFAb decreased serum-induced melanoma cell proliferation and inhibited tyrosinase activity and melanin contents in α-MSH-stimulated melanoma cells. Taken together, this study indicates MSPFAb may promote wound healing- and whitening-associated activities in dermal cells, and suggests that it has potential use as a wound healing and skin whitening agent.

Development of biomaterial-based bioinks is critical for replacement and/or regeneration of tissues and organs by three-dimensional (3D) printing techniques. However, the number of 3D-printable biomaterials in practical use remains limited despite the rapid development of 3D printing techniques. Controlling the flow properties of bioinks and mechanical properties of the resultant printed objects is key considerations in the design of biomaterial-based bioinks for practical applications. In this study, a printable hydrogel comprising biocompatible polysaccharides that has potential for cartilage regeneration via tissue engineering approaches was designed. Self-healing hydrogels were prepared from partially oxidized hyaluronate (OHA) and glycol chitosan (GC) in the presence of adipic acid dihydrazide (ADH). The self-healing ability of OHA/GC/ADH hydrogels was attributed to the combination of two dynamic bonds in the gels, including imine bonds obtained via a Schiff base reaction between OHA and GC, as well as acylhydrazone bonds formed by the reaction between OHA and ADH. The OHA/GC/ADH hydrogels did not require any postgelation or additional cross-linking processes for use in the fabrication of 3D constructs using an extrusion-based 3D printer. The concentrations and molecular weights of the constituent polymers were found to be critical parameters affecting the flow and mechanical properties of the self-healing hydrogels, which showed great potential as bioinks for fabricating cell-laden structures using a 3D printer. The expression of chondrogenic marker genes such as SOX-9 and collagen type II of ATDC5 cells encapsulated in the OHA/GC/ADH hydrogel was not significantly affected by the printing process. This self-healing hydrogel system may have the potential in tissue engineering applications, including cartilage regeneration.

Smilax china (SC) has pharmacological effects including anti-inflammatory activity, but its effects on skin wound healing and skin barrier function have not been investigated. Here, we investigated the effects of absolute extracted from SC flowers (SCF) on skin wound healing-linked responses and functional skin barrier proteins using human epidermal keratinocytes (HaCaT cells). SCF absolute contained 20 components and was non-toxic to HaCaT cells. The absolute increased the proliferation, migration, and sprout outgrowth of HaCaT cells, and enhanced the activations of serine/threonine-specific protein kinase and extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2. In addition, it increased the syntheses of type I and IV collagens and the expressions of skin barrier proteins (filaggrin and loricrin). These results indicate SCF absolute may has positive effects on skin wound healing by accelerating keratinocyte migration and proliferation activities and collagen synthesis, and on skin barrier function by upregulating barrier proteins in keratinocytes. We suggest SCF absolute to be considered as a potential means of promoting skin wound and barrier repair.

Paederia foetida (PF) has antidiarrheal, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory activities. However, its biological activities on skin remain unclear. In this study, we examined the effect of PF flower absolute (PFFA) on skin wound healing- and skin barrier-linked responses in human epidermal keratinocytes (HaCaT cells). PFFA contained 23 components and increased the proliferation and sprout outgrowth of HaCaT cells and modestly increased migration. PFFA enhanced the phosphorylation levels of extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2, serine/threonine-specific protein kinase (AKT), and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in HaCaT cells, and upregulated type I and IV collagen synthesis and filaggrin (an epidermal barrier protein) expression in HaCaT cells. These findings suggest PFFA may promote skin wound repair by stimulating migratory and proliferative activities (probably through the AKT/MAPK pathway), collagen synthesis, and skin barrier repair by upregulating the expressions of filaggrin in epidermal keratinocytes. Therefore, PFFA may be useful for developing agents that enhance skin wound and barrier-repair functions.

Zea mays L. (ZM) has cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory activities, but its biological activities such as skin regeneration and wound healing in human skin have not been reported. In the present study, we tested the effects of ZM flower (ZMF) absolute on proliferation and migration of human keratinocytes (HaCaTs) and identified its components by using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. GC/MS analysis revealed that the ZMF absolute contained 13 constituents, and it increased HaCaT proliferation and migration. The ZMF absolute enhanced the phosphorylation levels of serine/threonine-specific protein kinase (Akt), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 in HaCaTs. In addition, the absolute induced an increase in sprout outgrowth of HaCaTs. The present study reports for the first time that ZMF absolute may promote skin wound healing and/or skin regeneration by stimulating proliferative and migratory activities in dermal keratinocytes through the Akt/MAPK pathway. Therefore, ZMF absolute may be a promising natural material for the use in skin regeneration and/or wound healing applications.

This paper reports an increase in the optical reflectivity of two kinds of copolymers used in contact lenses, with different proportions of silicon and fluorine derivatives, when irradiated with 4.1 MeV alpha particles from an 241Am source. The fiber-optic reflectance technique showed that the lens with a higher proportion of silicon and fluorine content and a lower proportion of methyl-methacrylate is more susceptible to alpha radiation. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy have revealed the formation of silicon oxide and carbide species as a result of chain scission and recombination in the 20 μm thick irradiated regions of lens materials. It is presumed that the high (260 eV/nm) linear energy transfer of alpha particles in polymers creates trapped gas “Bubbles”, and the observed increase in the optical reflectivity with increased irradiation time is explained on the basis of diffuse reflectance caused by the scattering of light from the hard surfaces of these “Bubbles”.

Hyaluronate has attracted great attention in tissue engineering as a scaffolding material. However, hyaluronate typically requires chemical cross-linking molecules to form hydrogels, which may induce undesirable side effects in the body. In this study, hyaluronate was partially oxidized with sodium periodate to generate aldehyde groups in the backbone, and simply mixed with glycol chitosan to form gels via Schiff base formation. The effects of the degree of oxidization, polymer concentration, and polymer composition on the mechanical properties of oxidized hyaluronate/glycol chitosan hydrogels were investigated in vitro. Degradation behavior and biocompatibility of oxidized hyaluronate/glycol chitosan gels were also evaluated in vitro. This system may be potentially useful as an injectable system in many tissue engineering applications, including cartilage regeneration.

The multifunctional glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78) is known to be differentially expressed in the lipid rafts of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) from spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and normal Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. However, its role in VSMCs from SHRs remains to be elucidated. This work was conducted to investigate the contribution made by GRP78 in VSMCs. GRP78 expression in VSMC lipid rafts decreased in WKY rats with age, but not in SHRs. Transfection with GRP78-siRNA attenuated not only platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-BB-induced VSMC proliferation and aortic sprout outgrowth but also the phosphorylation of PDGF receptor (PDGFR)-β, Akt, and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (Erk) 1/2 in VSMCs in response to PDGF-BB. Moreover, GRP78 knockdown also reduced the PDGF-BB-induced dimerization of PDGFR-β and GRP78 in SHR VSMCs. The phosphorylation of GRP78 and PDGFR-β was elevated in VSMCs treated with PDGF-BB and was completely abolished by AG1296 (a PDGFR inhibitor). Moreover, the binding of PDGFR-β to GRP78 and the co-localization of GRP78 to PDGFR-β in VSMCs were stronger in SHRs than in WKY rat controls. This study demonstrates that the PDGF-BB-induced proliferation of SHR VSMCs is mediated by the expressional upregulation of GRP78 on VSMC lipid rafts in SHRs, probably via the regulation of PDGFR-β-GRP78 binding and their cross-activation. These observations indicate that GRP78 may play important roles in the pathological progression of SHR VSMCs.

Neutrons over a wide range of energies are produced by bombarding a 1.05 cm thick beryllium target with protons of different energies delivered by the MC-50 Cyclotron of the Korea Institute of Radiological Medical Sciences (KIRAMS). The neutron flux Φ(En) versus neutron energy En, produced by protons of 30, 35, and 40 MeV energies, was obtained by using the GEANT4 code with a data-based hadronic model. For the experimental validation of the simulated neutron spectra, a number of pure aluminum and iron oxide samples were irradiated with the neutrons produced by 30, 35, and 40 MeV protons at 20 μ A beam current. The gamma-ray activities of 24Na and 56Mn produced, respectively, through 27Al(n,α)24Na and 56Fe(n,p)56Mn reactions were measured by a HPGe detector. The neutron flux Φ(En) at each neutron energy from the simulation was multiplied with the evaluated cross-sections σ(En) of the respective nuclear reaction, and the summation ∑ Φ ( E n ) σ ( E n ) was calculated over the neutron spectrum for each proton energy of 30, 35, and 40 MeV. The measured gamma-ray activities of 24Na and 56Mn were found in good agreement with the activities estimated by using the summed values of ∑ Φ ( E n ) σ ( E n ) along with other parameters in a neutron activation method.

The latent tracks formed on CR-39 solid state track detector on exposure of alpha radiations emanating from a collimated 241 Am source were developed by a chemical etching method. Alpha track images were captured by an optical microscope and were processed by using Image Pro-Plus (6.0) software. GEANT4 simulations were carried out to obtain the angular and energy distribution profiles of the alpha particles. Apart from fluence, geometric parameters like aspect ratio (the ratio of the major to minor axis) and the depth profiles of etched tracks were measured experimentally and correlated with simulated angular and energy profile of incident radiations. Reasonable agreement was observed in the fluence and depth profile information obtained from experiments and simulations.

Recently, we reported n-type graphene can be achieved simply using H2 molecules. It was understood by the attachment of hydrogen atoms dissociated on the surface of graphene. However, the amount of attached hydrogen has not been yet investigated. Here, we show the possibility of the formation of C H bonds due to the H2 exposure theoretically and the mass of the attached hydrogen atoms on graphene experimentally. The amount of the attached hydrogen atoms has been measured by a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). After exposure of a multilayer graphene (MLG) to 20 bar of H2 pressure at 353 K for 20 h, the resonance frequency (RF) of QCM decreased. It indicates that the mass of the MLG increases. On the basis of the RF variation, we concluded that the hydrogen atoms were bonded to 3.84% of carbon atoms in the MLG. In order to confirm the C H bonding of MLG, Raman spectroscopy was performed before and after exposure to H2 pressure. On exposure, the D peak developed and the peak for 2-D graphite in 2D band increased. The experimental results and theoretical calculation demonstrate that the H2 molecules on the surface of the graphene are dissociated and that some of dissociated H atoms are attached on graphene.

Synaptosomal-associated protein 23 (SNAP23) is involved in microvesicle trafficking and exocytosis in various cell types, but its functional role in blood pressure (BP) regulation has not yet been defined. Here, we found that lipid raft SNAP23 expression was much lower in vascular smooth-muscle cells (VSMCs) from spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) than in those from normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. This led us to investigate the hypothesis that this lower expression may be linked to the spontaneous hypertension found in SHR. The expression level of lipid raft SNAP23 and the fluidity in the plasma membrane of VSMCs were lower in SHR than in WKY rats. Cholesterol content in the VSMC membrane was higher, but the secreted cholesterols found in VSMC-conditioned medium and in the blood serum were lower in SHR than in WKY rats. SNAP23 knockdown in WKY rat VSMCs reduced the membrane fluidity and increased the membrane cholesterol level. Systemic overexpression of SNAP23 in SHR resulted in an increase of cholesterol content in their serum, a decrease in cholesterol in their aorta and the reduction of their BP. Our findings suggest that the low expression of the lipid raft SNAP23 in VSMCs might be a potential cause for the characteristic hypertension of SHR.

The extract of chestnut (Castanea crenata var. dulcis) flower (CCDF) has antioxidant and antimelanogenic properties, but its anti-obesity properties have not been previously examined. In this study, we tested the effect of CCDF absolute on adipocyte differentiation by using 3T3-L1 cells and determining the bioactive component of CCDF absolute in 3T3-L1 cell differentiation. CCDF absolute (0.1–100[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/mL) did not change 3T3-L1 cell viability. At 50[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/mL and 100[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/mL, the absolute significantly reduced the accumulation of lipid droplets in 3T3-L1 cells that were induced by culture in medium containing 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine/dexamethasone/insulin (MDI). GC/MS analysis showed that CCDF absolute contains 10 compounds. Among these compounds, cinnamyl alcohol (3-phenyl-2-propene-1-ol) dose-dependently inhibited the increased accumulation of lipid droplets in MDI-contained medium-cultured 3T3-L1 cells at a concentration range of 0.1[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/mL to 10[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/mL that did not cause cytotoxicity in 3T3-L1 cells. The inhibitory effect was significant at 5[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/mL ([Formula: see text] of response in MDI alone-treated state, [Formula: see text]) and 10[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/mL ([Formula: see text] of response in MDI alone-treated state, [Formula: see text]). Moreover, the enhanced expression of obesity-related proteins (PPAR[Formula: see text], C/EBP[Formula: see text], SREBP-1c, and FAS) in MDI medium-cultivated 3T3-L1 cells was significantly attenuated by the addition of cinnamyl alcohol at 5[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/mL and 10[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/mL. These findings demonstrate that cinnamyl alcohol suppresses 3T3-L1 cell differentiation by inhibiting anti-adipogenesis-related proteins, and it may be a main bioactive component of CCDF absolute, exerting antidifferentiation action in 3T3-L1 cells. Therefore, cinnamyl alcohol, as well as CCDF absolute, may be potential candidates for the prevention or treatment of obesity.

Prevention of age-associated reduction in muscle mass and function is required to manage a healthy life. Supplemental (-)-Epicatechin (EC) appears to act as a potential regulator for muscle growth and strength. However, its cellular and molecular mechanisms as a potential muscle growth agent have not been studied well. In the current study, we investigated a role of EC in differentiation of muscle progenitors to gain the molecular insight into how EC regulates muscle growth. EC enhanced myogenic differentiation in a dose-dependent manner through stimulation of promyogenic signaling pathways, p38MAPK and Akt. EC treatment elevated MyoD activity by enhancing its heterodimerization with E protein. Consistently, EC also positively regulated myogenic conversion and differentiation of fibroblasts. In conclusion, EC has a potential as a therapeutic or nutraceutical remedy to treat degenerative muscle diseases or age-related muscle weakness.

Single crystalline orthorhombic phase tungsten trioxide monohydrate (O-WO3·H2O, space group: Pmnb) nanoplates with a clear morphology and uniform size distribution have been synthesized by the hydrothermal method and fabricated on the surface of fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass substrates with selective exposure of the crystal facet by the finger rubbing method. The rubbing method can easily arrange the O-WO3·H2O nanoplates along the (020) facet on the FTO substrate. The O-WO3·H2O nanoplate can be converted to monoclinic phase WO3 (γ-WO3, space group: P21/n) with dominant crystal facet of (002) without destroying the plate structure. Crystal morphologies, structures, and components of the powders and films have been determined by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, etc. The band gap energies of the O-WO3·H2O and γ-WO3 nanoplates were determined as ca. 2.26 and 2.49 eV, respectively. 강릉원주대학교 생명과학대학 식품가공유통학과This study investigated the quality characteristics and sensory evaluation of Doenjang samples made of soybean koji and prepared with Bacillus subtillus 3-B-1 and/or Aspergillus oryzae 6-M-1 isolated from traditional Meju, to replace the koji with wheat flour. Among the quality characteristics of doenjang during its fermentation at 30˚C for 40 days, its moisture decreased by degrees, but its amino-type nitrogen and reducing sugar increased by degrees. The color of the doenjang made of koji and prepared with Aspergillus oryzae 6-M-1 changed more significantly than that of the doenjang with Bacillus subtilis 3-B-1. The viable cell and mold counts increased by degrees during the fermentation. The results of the sensory evaluation of the doenjang made with koji and prepared with Aspergillus oryzae 6-M-1 did not significantly differ from those of the doenjang with Bacillus subtilis 3-B-1 and of the commercial doenjang. 강릉원주대학교 생명과학대학 식품가공유통학과To establish the optimal manufacturing conditions of soybean koji, soybean Koji prepared with Aspergillus oryzae 6-M-1 and Bacillus subtilis 3-B-1 isolated from traditional Korean meju. During 7 days of making Koji, the amount of amino-type nitrogen was getting more increase. The amount of amino-type nitrogen of Koji prepared with A. oryzae 6-M-1 was 686.16 mg% (w/w), that of Koji with B. subtilis 3-B-1 was 643.46 mg% (w/w) at seventh day of making Koji. The α-amylase activity of Koji prepared with A. oryzae 6-M-1 was 1472.54 unit/g, that of Koji with B. subtilis 3-B-1 was 791.00 units/g on the seventh day of the making. The acidic protease activity of Koji prepared with A. oryzae 6-M-1 was 309.00 unit/g, that of Koji with B. subtilis 3-B-1 was 135.88 unit/g at 7th day of making. The amount of amino-type nitrogen and enzyme activities of soybean Koji prepared with A. oryzae 6-M-1 and B. subtilis 3-B-1 were produced more than those of wheat flour Koji made in factory. Cancer chemotherapy drugs command a large share of the market, and the development of new therapeutics with high efficacy and specificity is an active area of study. Recently, the development of cancer therapeutics from natural products targeting angiogenesis has drawn attention due to conventional chemotherapeutics showing serious side effects and resistance in cancer cells. In this study, we investigated the pharmacological efficacy of Gomisin A, an active ingredient of Schizandra chinensis baillon, on tumor growth and metastasis. Administration of Gomisin A at 10 and 100 μg/ml reduced tumor growth in vivo by 80.5±8.1% and 96.2±2%, respectively, compared with positive tumor controls. Treatment of Gomisin A in normal and various tumor cell lines did not exert significant toxicity. Mice treated with Gomisin A at a concentration of 10 and 100 μg/head showed a significant reduction in tumor-induced angiogenesis of 151±16.9% and 98.5±29.5%, respectively. Furthermore, tumor metastasis analysis revealed that the administration of Gomisin A at a concentration of 10 and 100 μg/head inhibited tumor metastasis by 13.5±8.56% and 58.3±9.12%, respectively. In addition, Gomisin A significantly decreased cell adhesion of the B16BL6 cells to the extracellular matrix. These results demonstrate that Gomisin A inhibits tumor growth via suppression of angiogenesis and tumor metastasis inhibition, without cellular toxicity. The pharmacological efficacy of Gomisin A suggests that it may be a potential candidate for the development of cancer drugs.

See paper for full list of authors; The Korea Rare Isotope Accelerator, currently referred to as KoRIA, is briefly presented. The KoRIA facility is aimed to enable cutting-edge sciences in a wide range of fields. It consists of a 70 kW isotope separator on-line (ISOL) facility driven by a 70 MeV, 1 mA proton cyclotron and a 400 kW in-flight fragmentation (IFF) facility. The ISOL facility uses a superconducting (SC) linac for post-acceleration of rare isotopes up to about 18 MeV/u, while the SC linac of IFF facility is capable of accelerating uranium beams up to 200 MeV/u, 8 pμA and proton beams up to 600 MeV, 660 μA. Overall features of the KoRIA facility are presented with a focus on the accelerator design.

International audience; In this article, we report the synthesis of ultra-long carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by thermal chemical vapour deposition method. Ultra-long, individual and aligned CNTs were directly grown on a flat silicon substrate. The orientation of the nanotubes was found parallel to the gas flow direction. The ultra-long CNTs were grown with different transition metallic salts, such as nickel chloride, iron (III) chloride, cobalt acetate and ruthenium acetate, as the catalysts. The influence of the growth conditions, such as growth temperature, reactive gas flow on the length and alignment of the CNTs was studied in detail. By using different catalysts, ultra-long single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) or multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were successfully grown. These ultra-long CNTs were transferred to other substrates by two methods. (1) The first method is to use polydimethylsiloxane as a stamp. (2) The second method is to use KOH as an etching agent. The diameter and length of the CNTs were characterised by transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope and Raman spectroscopy. The results indicate that the length of the CNTs can reach up to 4 mm. The diameter of the SWCNTs is in the range of 0.7-2.1 nm and the diameter of the MWCNTs is approximately 150 nm.

In the present study, the chemical compositions and skin whitening-related antioxidant and anti-melanogenic effect of essential oils (EOs) extracted from Chrysanthemum borealeMakino (CBM) (CBMEOs) at vegetative, pre-flowering and full-flowering are investigated and contrasted among the three stages. The yields and components of the CBMEOs were different at each stage. The CBMEOs increased DPPH and ABTs scavenging activities and attenuated the α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH)-induced tyrosinase activity and melanin synthesis in B16BL6 cells. Among CBMEO components, eugenol had the highest DPPH and ABTs scavenging activities and cuminaldehyde was the strongest inhibitor of α-MSH-induced tyrosinase activity and melanin synthesis. The CBMEOs in each stage showed the different levels of phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 and p38 MAPK. These findings demonstrate that the CBMEOs have antioxidative and anti-melanogenic activities in all the CBM harvesting stages, resulting in skin-whitening biological activities and that the levels of their component contents and bioactivities differ among the CBM harvesting stages. The CBMEOs may have the potential for use in cosmetics and alternative medicine.

The photolithography process has generally been used for the making of catalyst layers used for the synthesis of CNTs due to its comparative ease. However, this method results in the formation of undesirable catalyst particles, which deteriorate the quality of the devices. Therefore, we tried to form a catalyst layer without using any lift-off or wet etching process, especially for the formation of carbon nanotube interconnects. After spin coating the samples, which were previously fabricated with several vias, with an iron-acetate solution, the catalyst layer was pulled down into the bottom of the holes through the force of gravity. We were able to remove the catalyst layer which was coated over undesirable areas, by TMAH (tetramethylammonium hydroxide, N(CH3)4OH) treatment. After the catalyst deposition process, we synthesized CNTs and observed them by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). © 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Although the structure has been elucidated for the binding of colchicine and podophyllotoxin as potent destabilizer for microtubule formation, very little is known about MDL-27048, a competitive inhibitor for colchicine and podophyllotoxin. The structural basis for the interaction of antimitotic agents with tubulin was investigated by molecular modeling, and we propose binding models for MDL-27048 against tubulin. The proposed model was not only consistent with previous competition experiment data between colchicine and MDL-27048, but further suggested an additional binding cavity on tubulin. Based on this finding from the proposed MDL-tubulin complex, we performed molecular design studies to identify new antimitotic agents. These new chalcone derivatives exerted growth inhibitory effects on all four human hepatoma and one renal epithelial cell lines tested and induced strong cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase. Furthermore, these compounds exhibited a strong inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization in vitro. Therefore, we suggest that the validated MDL-27048 model would serve as a potent platform for designing new molecular entities for anticancer agents targeted to microtubules.

For field emitters as a cathode of traveling wave tube–microwave power amplifiers (TWT–MPA), field-emission (FE) properties of in situ grown carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto electrically conducting substrate were systematically characterized. CNTs grown on the Co/TiN coated Ta substrate with properly controlled process exhibited the best FE property. The maximum current density and corresponding total emission current were 3.5 mA/cm 2 and ∼1.7 mA at 21.6 V/μm, respectively. Details on the correlation between the FE properties and the morphological parameters will be discussed.

A proton cyclotron MC-50 in Korea Institute of Radiological & Medical Science (KIRAMS) is used to carry out neutron activation experiments with Y2 O3 targets irradiated with neutron beams of a continuous spectrum produced by proton beams on a thick beryllium target. Neutrons are generated by 9 Be (p, n) reaction with an incident proton intensity of 20 μA. The neutron spectra generated by proton beams of 30, 35, and 40 MeV are calculated by GEANT4 simulations. Nb powders are used for neutron flux monitoring by measuring the activities of 92m Nb through the reaction 93 Nb (n, 2n). By using a subtraction method, the average cross section of 89 Y(n,2n) and 89 Y(n,3n) reactions at the neutron energies of 29.8 ± 1.8 MeV and 34.8 ± 1.8 MeV are extracted and are found to be close to the existing cross sections from the EXFOR data and the evaluated nuclear data libraries such as TENDL-2015 or EAF-2010.

We measured 209 Bi(n, 4n) cross sections at neutron energies E n = 29.8 ± 1.8 MeV and E n = 34.8 ± 1.8 MeV. Bismuth oxide samples were irradiated with the neutrons produced by impinging 30, 35 and 40 MeV proton beams on a 1.05 cm thick beryllium target, where the proton beams were from the MC-50 Cyclotron of Korea Institute of Radiological Medical Sciences (KIRAMS). The neutron flux for each proton beam energy E p , Φ E p ( E n ), has a broad spectrum with respect to E n . By taking the difference in the neutron fluxes, the difference spectra, Φ 40 ( E n ) −Φ 35 ( E n ) and Φ 35 ( E n ) −Φ 30 ( E n ), are obatined and found to be peaked at E n = 29.8 and 34.8 MeV, respectively, with a width of about 3.6 MeV. By making use of this observation and employing the TENDL-2009 library we could extract the 209 Bi(n, 4n) 206 Bi cross sections at the aforementioned neutron energies.

Objective Carvacrol (2-methyl-5-(1-methylethyl) phenol), a cyclic monoterpene, exerts protective activities in a variety of pathological states including tumor growth, inflammation, and oxidative stress. However, it is unknown whether carvacrol affects events in vascular cells during the development of atherosclerotic neointima. We investigated the effects of carvacrol on the migration and proliferation of rat aortic smooth muscle cells (RASMCs) and on vascular neointima formation. Methods and results Carvacrol significantly inhibited platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-BB-stimulated RASMC migration and proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner. Cell viability was not affected by treatment with carvacrol. Carvacrol attenuated the expression of NADPH oxidase (NOX) 1 and the phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 in response to PDGF-BB. Moreover, carvacrol suppressed the PDGF-BB-stimulated generation of H 2 O 2 and inhibited the activity of NOX in RASMCs. Treatment with carvacrol inhibited PDGF-BB-induced aortic sprout outgrowth, balloon injury-evoked vascular neointima formation, and expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen in the neointima. Conclusion These findings indicate that carvacrol inhibits migration and proliferation of RASMCs by suppressing the reactive oxygen species-mediated MAPK signaling pathway in these cells, thereby attenuating vascular neointimal formation. Carvacrol may be a promising agent for preventing vascular restenosis or atherosclerosis.

Chrysanthemum boreale Makino (Compositae) (CBM) is a traditional medicine that has been used for the prevention or treatment of various disorders; it has various properties including antioxidation, anti-inflammation, and antitumor.The present study was designed to explore the in vitro effect of CBM flower floral water (CBMFF) on atherosclerosis-related responses in rat aortic smooth muscle cells (RASMCs).CBMFF was extracted from CBM flower by steam distillation and analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The anti-atherosclerosis activity of CBMFF was tested by estimating platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-BB (10 ng/mL)-induced proliferation and migration levels and intracellular kinase pathways in RASMCs at CBMFF concentrations of 0.01-100 μM and analyzing ex vivo aortic ring assay.Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry showed that the CBMFF contained a total of seven components. The CBMFF inhibits PDGF-BB-stimulated RASMC migration and proliferation (IC50: 0.010 μg/mL). Treatment of RASMCs with PDGF-BB induced PDGFR-β phosphorylation and increased the phosphorylations of MAPK p38 and ERK1/2. CBMFF addition prevented PDGF-BB-induced phosphorylation of these kinases (IC50: 008 and 0.018 μg/mL, for p38 MAPK and ERK1/2, respectively), as well as PDGFR-β (IC50: 0.046 μg/mL). Treatment with inhibitors of PDGFR, P38 MAPK, and ERK1/2 decreased PDGF-BB-increased migration and proliferation in RASMCs. Moreover, the CBMFF suppressed PDGF-BB-increased sprout outgrowth of aortic rings (IC50: 0.047 μg/mL).These results demonstrate that CBMFF may inhibit PDGF-BB-induced vascular migration and proliferation, most likely through inhibition of the PDGFR-β-mediated MAPK pathway; therefore, the CBMFF may be promising candidate for the development of herbal remedies for vascular disorders.

Neutron shielding simulations by using GEANT4 and PHITS code are performed. As a neutron source, $^{252}$Cf is considered and the energy distribution of the neutrons emitted from $^{252}$Cf is assumed the Watt fission spectrum. The neutron dose equivalent rates with and without the shield are estimated for shielding materials such as graphite, iron, polyethylene, NS-4-FR and KRAFTON-HB. For the neutron shielding simulations by using GEANT4, high precision (G4HP) model with G4NDL 4.2 based on ENDF-VII data are used. And for PHITS simulations, JENDL-4.0 library are used for the same purpose. It is found that differences between the shielding calculations by using GEANT4 with G4NDL 4.2 and PHITS with JENDL-4.0 library are not significant for all cases considered in this work. We investigate the accuracy of the neutron dose equivalent rates obtained from GEANT4 and PHITS by comparing our simulation results with experimental data and other values calculated earlier. Calculated neutron dose equivalent rates agree well with the experimental dose equivalent rates within 20% errors except for polyethylene. For polyethylene material, discrepancy between the calculations and the experiments are up to 40% but all simulations show consistent features.

Membranes with nano-apertures are versatile templates that possess a wide range of electronic, optical and biomedical applications. However, such membranes have been limited to silicon-based inorganic materials to utilize standard semiconductor processes. Here we report a new type of flexible and free-standing polymeric membrane with nano-apertures by exploiting high-wettability difference and geometrical reinforcement via multiscale, multilevel architecture. In the method, polymeric membranes with various pore sizes (50-800 nm) and shapes (dots, lines) are fabricated by a hierarchical mould-based dewetting of ultraviolet-curable resins. Artemisia annua L. essential oil (AAEO) has diverse properties including antibacterial, antioxidant, antinociceptive, and antimicrobial activities. However, the effect of AAEO on obesity remains to be investigated. In this study, we analyzed the compounds of AAEO and explored the effect of AAEO on the differentiation of preadipocyte into adipocyte using preadipocyte cell line 3T3-L1. Total yield of AAEO from 20 kg A. annua leaf and flower was 0.5%, v/w. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed that AAEO contained 34 compounds. 3T3-L1 cells incubated in 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine / dexamethasone / insulin (MDI)-containing medium showed increased accumulation of lipid droplets. This increased response was suppressed by treatment with AAEO. Expressions of obesity-related proteins (PPARγ, C/EBPα, SREBP-1c, FAS, and ACC) were increased in 3T3-L1 cells cultured in MDI medium and these responses were decreased by treatment with AAEO. These findings demonstrate that AAEO may suppress 3T3-L1 cell differentiation by inhibiting adipogenesis and activation of lipid metabolism-related proteins.

Antifibrotic effect of twelve diterpenes (1–12) from the 90% methanolic fraction of Biota orientalis leaves was evaluated employing HSC-T6 cells by assessing cell proliferation and morphological change. Among these diterpenes, totarol (8) and isopimara-8(14),15-dien-19-oic acid (9) dramatically reduced cell proliferation in dose-and time-dependent manner. Furthermore, treatment with these compounds resulted in the different pattern of morphological changes of HSC-T6 cells. Taken together, antiproliferative activity of diterpenes from B. orientalis might suggest therapeutic potentials against liver fibrosis.

The flower of Pueraria thunbergiana BENTH (PTBF) contains isoflavonoids and essential oil components. It has many biological and pharmacological activities, including anti-diabetes, anti-oxidant, and weight loss. However, its effect on skin regeneration remains unknown. In the present study, we isolated the absolute from PTBF through solvent extraction and determined the role of the absolute on skin regeneration-associated responses in human epidermal-keratinocytes (HaCats). The PTBF absolute, which contained 10 compounds, stimulated migration and proliferation and increased the phosphorylation of serine/threonine-specific protein kinase and extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 in HaCats. It induced type I and IV collagen synthesis in HaCats. In addition, treatment with PTBF absolute resulted in increased sprout outgrowth in HaCats. These findings suggest that PTBF absolute may participate in skin regeneration, probably through promotion of migration, proliferation, and collagen synthesis.

Artemisia montana Pampan (Compositae) (AMP) contains various compounds, including phenolic acids, alkaloids, and essential oil. It has been widely used in oriental medicine due to a variety of biological effects. However, the biological activity of the essential oil from AMP (AMPEO) on skin has not been investigated. In the present study, AMPEO was evaluated for its composition and its effect on cellular events (migration and proliferation) related to skin regeneration using normal human keratinocytes (HaCats). AMPEO, which was extracted by steam distillation, contained 42 components. AMPEO increased proliferation in HaCats in a dose-dependent manner (EC 50, 8.5 ng/mL) and did not affect migration. AMPEO also enhanced the phosphorylation of Akt and ERK 1/2 and induced the synthesis of type IV collagen, but not type I collagen in HaCats. In addition, AMPEO promoted wound closure in the dorsal side skin of rat tail. These results demonstrated that AMPEO extracted by steam distillation induced proliferation and synthesis of type IV collagen in human skin keratinocytes, and may thereby exert positive effects on skin regeneration and wound healing in human skin.

For field emitters as an electron source of traveling wave tube microwave power amplifiers, field-emission properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) grown in situ onto an electrically conducting substrate were systematically characterized. MWNTs grown on a TiN-coated Ta substrate with NH3 plasma pre-treatment exhibited the best field-emission property. The maximum current density and corresponding total emission current were 9.4 mA/cm2 and ∼5 mA at 18.8 V/μm, respectively. These enhanced field-emission properties are caused by the highly conducting buffer layer (TiN), the optimum metal substrate (Ta) that produces high field-emission current, and the control of site density of MWNTs by NH3 plasma pre-etching. Details on the correlation between the field-emission properties and the morphological parameters will be discussed.
