Chemical process simulation is one of the most fundamental skills that is expected from chemical engineers, yet relatively few graduates have the opportunity to learn, in depth, how a process simulator works, from programming the unit operations to the sequencing. The University of Calgary offers a "hands-on" postgraduate course in Chemical Engineering that gives students an opportunity to learn about how a simulator works, by building their own, fully functioning process simulator. This paper describes the organisation of the course, construction of a chemical process simulator using VBA, as built into Microsoft [R] Excel as the programming platform, the assessment of student progress and finally, and it evaluates the course format from both the instructor and the student point of view.

The pressing need to mitigate the presence of harmful gases in the atmosphere motivates scientific and engineering endeavors to devise effective adsorption solutions. Achieving practical and specific adsorption is essential for improving capture processes, with CO2 being a prominent target due to its significant environmental repercussions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), distinguished by their high porosity and adaptable structure, have emerged as promising candidates for CO2 adsorption. Especially noteworthy are functionalized MOFs, which augment adsorption capacity, selectivity, and heat of adsorption. This research investigates CO2 adsorption on HKUST-1 modified with three amines of varying strengths, evaluating adsorption capacity and thermal impacts using direct adsorption calorimetry and Van't Hoff thermodynamic models.

Photoluminescent carbon dots were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment from agricultural waste. Considering that the composition of the dots’ surface depends on the precursor source and that this composition influences the optical properties, this study focused on analyzing the effect of synthesis parameters on the formation of functional groups, on the core structure, on the morphology, and their influence on the absorption, excitation, emission, and quantum performance properties. It was obtained that by increasing the synthesis temperature, functional groups C = O, C = N, and CO were formed in the carbon dots obtained from the three precursors, and an additional group C = C in dots obtained from plantain peels, which are the only one that showed a degradation of the cellulose band. The absorption response indicated the formation of graphitic nuclei with oxygenated groups responsible for the red shift of the absorption maximum moving from 266 to 283 nm. The Raman response indicates that there are graphitic domains in the nucleus, where the defects band has a high intensity for the three precursors. The higher quantum yield value presented by the plantain dots is due to the surface, not the graphitic core. The spherical shape and size of around 2 nm were observed by TEM.

This study describes the implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors in flow meters installed in drinking water systems and in fog catchers built in low-income, high-altitude communities in the Andes region of Ecuador, taking studies at the University de las Fuerzas Armadas ESPE as our reference. The influence and management of these intelligent sensors are analyzed, as well as a basic review of the materials and methods used in their implementation. The importance of validating the accuracy and reliability of IoT sensors compared to professional devices is highlighted, especially in mountain areas with difficult access. Additionally, the cost–benefit of using IoT sensors in fog catchers and drinking water distribution networks is mentioned, which depends on several factors such as the scale of the project, the objectives to be achieved concerning monitoring, and the available resources. Finally, it is highlighted that using Internet of Things (IoT) sensors in construction and water collection systems has proven beneficial in detecting possible effects on its operation and determining consumption and supply flows for a given population.

Real textile wastewater (RTWW) poses significant environmental challenges. RTWW typically contains high levels of organic compounds, such as dyes, as well as inorganic substances like salts. These contaminants can harm aquatic life when released into water bodies without appropriate treatment. RTWW was subjected to a series of sequential treatments: exchange resins for removing ions, advanced oxidation with bicarbonate-activated peroxide to degrade organic matter, and a biological treatment based on the Zahn–Wellens test to remove remaining chemical oxygen demand (COD) The advanced oxidation process based on the activation of H2O2 with NaHCO3 (catalyzed with cobalt impregnated on a pillared clay, Co/Al–PILC)) was optimized using central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM). After the process integration, reductions in ion concentrations, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total organic carbon content (TOC) were achieved. Reduced hardness (99.94%) and ions (SO42− and acid black 194 dye of 99.88 and 99.46%, respectively), COD (96.64%), and TOC (96.89%), guaranteeing complete treatment of RTWW, were achieved. Additionally, the biodegradability index of RTWW increased from 0.28 ± 0.01 to 0.90 ± 0.01, and phytotoxicity was reduced, going from a phytotoxic that inhibited the germination of lettuce seeds to a phytostimulant after biological treatment with activated sludge.

Abstract The coexistence of multiple ferroic orders, i.e., multiferroicity, is a scarce property to be found in materials. Historically, this state has been found mainly in 3-dimensional complex oxides, but so far, this state has still been elusive for the most widely studied and characterized family of 2-dimensional compounds, the transition metal dichalcogenides. In this study, we report the experimental realization of multiferroic states in this family of materials, at room temperature, in bulk single crystals of Te-doped WSe2. We observe the coexistence of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity, evidenced in the presence of magnetization and piezoresponse force microscopy hysteresis loops. These findings open the possibility of widening the use and study of van der Waals-based multifunctional devices for nanoelectronics and spintronics applications.

The oxidation of aqueous solutions containing Allura Red AC (AR–AC) using bicarbonate-activated peroxide (BAP) and cobalt-impregnated pillared clay (Co/Al–PILC) as the catalyst was investigated. Using the CCD-RMS approach (central composite design–response surface methodology), the effects of dye, H2O2, and NaHCO3 concentrations on AR–AC degradation were studied. The decolorization, total nitrogen (TN), and total carbon (TC) removals were the analyzed responses, and the experimental data were fitted to empirical quadratic equations for these responses, obtaining coefficients of determination R2 and adjusted-R2 higher than 0.9528. The multi-objective optimization conditions were [dye] = 21.25 mg/L, [H2O2] = 2.59 mM, [NaHCO3] = 1.25 mM, and a catalyst loading of 2 g/L. Under these conditions, a decolorization greater than 99.43% was obtained, as well as TN and TC removals of 72.82 and 18.74%, respectively, with the added advantage of showing cobalt leaching below 0.01 mg/L. Chromatographic analyses (GC–MS and HPLC) were used to identify some reaction intermediates and by-products. This research showed that wastewater containing azo dyes may be treated using the cobalt-catalyzed BAP system in heterogeneous media.

In recent years, the utilization of extremophile microorganisms for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles, featuring enhanced properties and diverse compositions, has emerged as a sustainable strategy to generate high-quality nanomaterials with unique characteristics. Our study focuses on the biosynthesis of Cu-In-S (CIS) nanoparticles, which has garnered considerable attention in the past decade due to their low toxicity and versatile applications in biomedicine and solar cells. Despite this interest, there is a notable absence of reports on biological methods for CIS nanoparticle synthesis. In this research, three yeast species were isolated from soil samples in an extreme Antarctic environment—Union Glacier, Ellsworth Mountains. Among these isolates, Filobasidium stepposum demonstrated the capability to biosynthesize CIS nanoparticles when exposed to copper sulfate, indium chloride, glutathione, and cysteine. Subsequent purification and spectroscopic characterization confirmed the presence of characteristic absorbance and fluorescence peaks for CIS nanoparticles at 500 and 650 nm, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed the synthesis of monodisperse nanoparticles with a size range of 3–5 nm. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed the composition of the nanoparticles, revealing the presence of copper, indium, and sulfur. The copper/indium ratio ranged from 0.15 to 0.27, depending on the reaction time. The biosynthesized CIS nanoparticles showed higher photostability than biomimetic nanoparticles and demonstrated successful application as photosensitizers in quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSC), achieving a conversion efficiency of up to 0.0247%. In summary, this work presents a cost-effective, straightforward, and environmentally friendly method for CIS nanoparticle synthesis. Furthermore, it constitutes the first documented instance of a biological procedure for producing these nanoparticles, opening avenues for the development of environmentally sustainable solar cells.

Cesar, a coffee-growing department in Colombia, has particular characteristics that favor the production of coffees differentiated by sensory profile, for which the acidity attribute stands out. The chemical composition and sensory quality of the coffee produced by 160 coffee growers during two production harvests (2021 and 2022) and processed by the wet method were evaluated to correlate the contents of the main acidic chemical compounds present in green coffee beans with the perceived acidity of the beverage. The chemical analysis of coffee samples utilized spectrophotometric methods and HPLC-DAD techniques. Lactic, 3,5-di-CQA and phosphoric acids were good discriminators of acidity classified as excellent; that is, with a score higher than 7.75 on the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) scale, presenting the highest contents in the green coffee bean. There was a direct linear relationship between acidity and 3,5-di-CQA and 5-CQA and an inverse relationship between acidity and 3-CQA, 4-CQA and 4,5-CQA. These findings contribute to the understanding of the quality and chemistry of Colombian coffee.

Most waxes used as cosmetic ingredients are derived from the petrochemical industry. A modern alternative to this complex synthesis approach is the hydrotreatment of palm oil; thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of incorporating a biowax derived from hydroprocessing of crude palm oil as a new natural cosmetic ingredient in facial cream and BB cream. Therefore, two water in oil (W/O) emulsions, one including pigments, with five different weight percentages were developed and subjected to further sensory evaluation by a trained panel to estimate the level of acceptance. Moreover, resistance to centrifugation, pH, spreadability, phase separation, viscosity and storage modulus were the parameters evaluated in a preliminary stability study using thermal stress. Sensory analysis showed that the highest level of acceptance was obtained between 3% and 9 wt% biowax. For both prototypes, increasing biowax percentage led to a greater effect on stickiness, the viscosity increased, and extensibility decreased. The formulations were able to maintain their pH. The best stability for BB cream was observed at 9%, since the changes in the properties were slight. For facial cream, the emulsion was more stable at intermediate biowax content. It was observed that biowax exhibits favorable characteristics as an emollient or thickening agent. Finally, the formulations with the best stability and sensory characteristics were obtained at 9 wt% biowax.

One stepping stone for reducing the maternal mortality is to identify severe maternal morbidity (SMM) using Electronic Health Records (EHRs). We aim to develop a pipeline to represent and classify the unstructured text of maternal progress notes in eight classes according to the silver labels defined by the ICD-10 codes associated with SMM. We preprocessed the text, removing protected health information (PHI) and reducing stop words. We built different pipelines to classify the SMM by the combination of six word-embeddings schemes, three different approaches for the representation of the documents (average, clustering, and principal component analysis), and five well-known machine learning classifiers. Additionally, we implemented an algorithm for typos and misspelling adjustment based on the Levenshtein distance to the Spanish Billion Word Corpus dictionary. We analyzed 43,529 documents constructed by an average of 4.15 progress notes from 22,937 patients. The pipeline with the best performance was the one that included Word2Vec, typos and spelling adjustment, document representation by PCA, and an SVM classifier. We found that it is possible to identify conditions such as miscarriage complication or hypertensive disorders from clinical notes written in Spanish, with a true positive rate higher than 0.85. This is the first approach to classify SMM from the unstructured text contained in the maternal EHRs, which can contribute to the solution of one of the most important public health problems in the world. Future works must test other representation and classification approaches to detect the risk of SMM.

In Colombia, most of the energy is produced by using water resources. However, the morphological impact of damming has not been thoroughly studied yet. Therefore, upstream and downstream changes in the channel width and sinuosity along the river due to the Betania, Prado, Salvajina, and Urrá I Dams, four of the oldest hydroelectric projects, were estimated. These changes were reported by using aerial photographs and satellite images to compare the river before and after dam construction. The analysis was complemented by including hydrological trends and geological characteristics of the areas to evaluate their relevance on the impacts on channel morphology. It was shown that factors such as valley confinement and the bank’s composition are key to determining the magnitude of the impact downstream of the dam. Upstream of the dam, contrastingly, the influence of the reservoir geometry controls the magnitude of the morphological changes, marking the boundaries of affected areas. The impacts of dam construction on river morphology vary notably, but including the geological characteristics of the river reach can be useful to improve predictions of the channel morphology response. The proposed methodology can be used to identify biotic compensation measures for new projects, a task that is not well defined in several countries.

Pretreatment technologies are proposed to break the crosslinked biomass matrix and facilitate bioconversion processes or chemical agent attacks in reaction schemes. However, most of the pretreatments are studied in single-step schemes, limiting the integral valorization of the feedstock composition. Therefore, sequential pretreatments could maximize this valorization by isolating more biomass fractions or removing unwanted compounds. This work focuses on proposing and assessing different sequential pretreatments for the isolation of lignocellulosic fractions. After a pretreatment screening, ten technical and economic indicators were assessed through a heuristic analysis. Data from the literature were used to evaluate five operational indicators and as the specification of processing units in simulation schemes to also evaluate five techno-energetic and economic indicators. As a main result, it was concluded that the sequential pretreatments of dilute acid (DA) with wet air oxidation (WAO) could be the most optimal for cellulose isolation, steam explosion (SE) with DA for hemicellulose fractionation, and DA with kraft process for lignin solubilization. Additionally, the DA and WAO sequence may be the most efficient in biorefinery designs since it maximizes biomass fractionation, producing two hydrolyzed liquors, one rich in sugars and the other in soluble lignin, as well as a cellulose-rich solid.

In the world, there are more mobile phone lines than people. These numbers have been increasing, especially in university students, due to the academic and social demands of a globalized and interconnected world in social networks, raising concerns about the health effects of mobile device overuse. The goal of this study was to establish the relationship between musculoskeletal symptoms in students at the health department of an institution of higher education and their dependence on mobile devices. An observational, descriptive study in which 334 interviews were presented, of which 244 were selected, corresponding to students with dependence on mobile devices. We find most symptoms in the neck (56.3%), followed by the dorsal region with (49.4%), wrist (42.6%), shoulder (33.9%), and elbow (9.6%). Study correlations were low for the back (Rho: 0.274) and wrist (Rho: 0.200) and very low for the neck (Rho: 0.171) and shoulder (Rho: 0.142). The presence of musculoskeletal symptoms, mainly in the neck, back, and wrist in university students with dependence on mobile devices belonging to the health department associated with academic programs in phonoaudiology, physiotherapy, and medicine, is common; however, the correlation was found to be low between dependency level and pain in the back and wrist and very low between dependency level and pain in the neck. Our results suggest that university wellness programs should focus on the neck, dorsal region of the back, wrist, and shoulder and that contrary to what was previously thought, there is a low correlation between dependence on cell phone use and musculoskeletal symptoms.

The usage of unmanned aircraft systems to complete routine, commercial, and industrial tasks has increased throughout the world, evidencing better profitability and reducing risks for operators. However, in some countries, there is a low implementation of unmanned aircraft systems, particularly in the electrical sector, due to a lack of appropriation or adaptation of technology to the local environment. Therefore, this paper presents an analysis of the uses of unmanned aircraft systems in the electrical industry worldwide and its possible application to a local context to identify how the expansion of unmanned aerial vehicles is helping various industries. The contribution of this paper is to show how the employment of unmanned aerial vehicles can help in any particular task in the electrical sector and the appropriation of these technologies in a country, showing a possible categorization of unmanned aerial vehicles based on future applications and current regulations. The analysis was carried out in the Colombian context, considering the current regulation and the impact of its use. This research considers safety, security, and privacy implications, including the reduction of personal harm with low operation costs. In addition, the importance of future implementations in Colombia is discussed as a topic of interest for any electrical company, researchers, and government entities.

A one-pot green method for aqueous synthesis of fluorescent copper sulphide nanoparticles (NPs) was developed. The reaction was carried out in borax–citrate buffer at physiological pH, 37 °C, aerobic conditions and using Cu (II) and the biological thiol cysteine. NPs exhibit green fluorescence with a peak at 520 nm when excited at 410 nm and an absorbance peak at 410 nm. A size between 8–12 nm was determined by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. An interplanar atomic distance of (3.5 ± 0.1) Å and a hexagonal chalcocite crystalline structure (βCh) of Cu2S NPs were also determined (HR-TEM). Furthermore, FTIR analyses revealed a Cu-S bond and the presence of organic molecules on NPs. Regarding toxicity, fluorescent Cu2S NPs display high biocompatibility when tested in cell lines and bacterial strains. Electrocatalytic activity of Cu2S NPs as counter electrodes was evaluated, and the best value of charge transfer resistance (Rct) was obtained with FTO/Cu2S (four layers). Consequently, the performance of biomimetic Cu2S NPs as counter electrodes in photovoltaic devices constructed using different sensitizers (ruthenium dye or CdTe NPs) and electrolytes (S2−/Sn2− or I−/I3−) was successfully checked. Altogether, novel characteristics of copper sulfide NPs such as green, simple, and inexpensive production, spectroscopic properties, high biocompatibility, and particularly their electrochemical performance, validate its use in different biotechnological applications.

CuInS2 (CIS) nanoparticles have unique chemical, toxicological and optoelectronic properties that favor their technological applications. In the present work we report a novel one step biomimetic method for the aqueous synthesis of CIS nanoparticles, that is also low cost and environmentally friendly. This biomimetic method uses only CuSO4 and InCl3 as precursor salts, and the biological molecule glutathione as sulfur donor and stabilizer of the nanoparticles (NPs). The reaction is performed at low temperatures, under aerobic conditions and atmospheric pressure. CIS nanoparticles produced by our biomimetic method exhibit fluorescence emission between 650 and 700 nm when excited at 500 nm. A size between 10 and 15 nm was determined by Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and corroborated by electron transmission microscopy. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) confirmed the crystalline structure of the CIS NPs produced. Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) analyses revealed the presence of Cu, In, and S in a 0.6: 1.4: 2 ratio, which has been reported for other CIS NPs in literature. No cytotoxicity of CIS NPs was observed in human OKT6/TERT2 cells and bacteria. Besides, the potential application of biomimetic CIS NPs as photosensitizers in quantum dots sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) was confirmed. The biocompatibility, spectroscopic properties, and energy harvesting performance in solar cells of the CIS NPs produced by our biomimetic method make them suitable for their use in different biotechnological applications.

This study aims to develop and evaluate fracturing nanofluids from the laboratory to the field trial with the dual purpose of increasing heavy crude oil mobility and reducing formation damage caused by the remaining fracturing fluid (FF). Two fumed silica nanoparticles of different sizes, and alumina nanoparticles were modified on the surface through basic and acidic treatments. The nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential and total acidity. The rheological behavior of the linear gel and the heavy crude oil after adding different chemical nature nanoparticles were measured at two concentrations of 100 and 1000 mg/L. Also, the contact angle assessed the alteration of the rock wettability. The nanoparticle with better performance was the raw fumed silica of 7 nm at 1000 mg/L. These were employed to prepare a fracturing nanofluid from a commercial FF. Both fluids were evaluated through their rheological behavior as a function of time at high pressure following the API RP39 test, and spontaneous imbibition tests were carried out to assess the FF’s capacity to modify the wettability of the porous media. It was possible to conclude that the inclusion of 7 nm commercial silica nanoparticles allowed obtaining a reduction of 10 and 20% in the two breakers used in the commercial fracture fluid formulation without altering the rheological properties of the system. Displacement tests were also performed on proppant and rock samples at reservoir conditions of overburden and pore pressures of 3200 and 1200 psi, respectively, while the temperature was set at 77 °C and the flow rate at 0.3 cm3/min. According to the effective oil permeability, a decrease of 31% in the damage was obtained. Based on these results, the fracturing nanofluid was selected and used in the first worldwide field application in a Colombian oil field with a basic sediment and water (BSW%) of 100 and without oil production. After two weeks of the hydraulic fracture operation, crude oil was produced. Finally, one year after this work, crude oil viscosity and BSW% kept showing reductions near 75% and 33%, respectively; and having passed two years, the cumulative incremental oil production is around 120,000 barrels.

The study of CO2 adsorption on adsorbent materials is a current topic of research interest. Although in real operating circumstances, the removal conditions of this gas is carried out at temperatures between 290 and 303 K and 1 Bar of pressure or high pressures, it is useful, as a preliminary approach, to determine CO2 adsorption capacity at 273K and 1 Bar and perform a thermodynamic study of the CO2 adsorption heats on carbonaceous materials prepared by chemical activation from African palm shell with CaCl2 and H3PO4 solutions, later modified with HNO3 and NH4OH, with the aim to establish the influence that these treatments have on the textural and chemical properties of the activated carbons and their relationship with the CO2 adsorption capacity. The carbonaceous materials were characterized by physical adsorption of N2 at 77K, CO2 at 273K, proximate analysis, Boehm titrations and immersion calorimetry in water and benzene. Activated carbons had a BET area between 634 and 865 m2g−1, with a micropore volume between 0.25 and 0.34 cm3g−1. The experimental results indicated that the modification of activated carbon with HNO3 and NH4OH generated a decrease in the surface area and pore volume of the material, as well as an increase in surface groups that favored the adsorption of CO2, which was evidenced by an increase in the adsorption capacity and the heat of adsorption.

KxMnO2 materials with birnessite-type structure are synthetized by two different methods which make it possible to obtain manganese oxides with different degrees of crystallinity. The XPS results indicate that the sample obtained at high temperature (KMn8) exhibits a lower oxidation state for manganese ions as well as a denser morphology. Both characteristics could explain the lower capacity value obtained for this electrode. In contrast, the sample obtained at low temperature (KMn4) or by hydrothermal method presents a manganese oxidation state close to 4 and a more porous morphology. Indeed, in this case higher capacity values are obtained. At current density of 30 mA g−1, the KMn8, KMn4, and HKMn samples display a capacity retention of 88, 82, and 68%, respectively. The higher capacity loss obtained for the HKMn compound could be explained considering that the incorporation of Zn2+ in the structure gives rise to the stabilization of a ZnMn2O4 spinel-type phase. This compound is obtained in the discharge process but remains in the charge stage. Thus, when this spinel-type phase is obtained the capacity loss increases. Moreover, the stabilization of this phase is more favorable at low current rates where 100% of retention for all samples, before 50 cycles, was observed.

Kevlar [poly (p-phenilylene terephtalamide)], was used as a precursor in the preparation of acti- vated carbon fibers. For this intention, physical and chemical activations were carried out. Activated fibers were physically prepared from the carbonization of the Kevlar and its later activation with CO 2 and steam of water, by the other hand; the chemically activated fibers were obtained by means of the impregnation of the material with phosphoric acid and their later carbonization. Different conditions were used and preliminary analyses of the precursor were taken into account (TGA-DTA / IR). The resulting fibers were characterized by N 2 (77K) adsorption, infrared spectroscopy, SEM, and immersion calorimetry. Yields and Burn off were also evaluated. The results shows that if you want to synthesize activated carbon fibers from Kevlar strong conditions respect to the commonly used such as water steam, high phosphoric acid concentrations and meth- ods of impregnation are the ones who allows the development of optimal surface areas and pore volumes.

Zorflex® activated carbon fibers (ACF), reference FM100 198B, are used before and after an oxidizing procedure with H 3 PO 4 to study the adsorption of Pb 2+ . The point of zero charge was determined for the modified and unmodified fiber giving values of 2.3 and 4.3, respectively. After oxidizing the ACF, the fiber showed to have a greater Pb 2+ adsorption capacity in comparison with the unmodified fiber, which is related with the acid sites increase, where lead was mainly adsorbed. Determination of the BET area was carried out by nitrogen physisorption at 77K. ACFs presented superficial areas between 1000 and 1500 m 2 /g showing mostly, a microporous structure. The preliminary design of an adsorbent using the modified fiber is presented where the fiber superior physicochemical properties over the unmodified one are observed.

Se analizaron los cambios entálpicos y entrópicos derivados del proceso de adsorción de acetaminofén sobre carbones activados con química superficial modificada. Se realizó, además, una variación del pH para determinar los cambios en las propiedades termodinámicas cuando existen cargas en el adsorbato y en el adsorbente. Se encontró que la máxima capacidad de adsorción (1,172 mmoles g -1) corresponde al proceso llevado a cabo en el carbón activado denominado CAR en este estudio a pH 7; los valores de las funciones termodinámicas de entalpía de inmersión y entropía de adsorción fueron -36,02 J g-1 y 0,123 J g-1 K-1, respectivamente. Así, el cambio de entropía de adsorción para el acetaminofén en los carbones activados estudiados dependió del pH. Se encontró que esta función termodinámica varía en el siguiente orden pH 2 > pH 11 > pH 7. Este comportamiento se relaciona con el número de especies presentes en la solución capaces de interactuar con la superficie del carbón activado.

Specific combustion programs (Gaseq, Chemical equilibria in perfect gases, Chris Morley) are used to model dioxin and formation in the incineration processes of urban solid wastes. Thanks to these programs, it is possible to establish correlations with the formation mechanisms postulated in li- terature on the subject. It was found that minimum oxygen quantities are required to obtain a significant formation of these compounds and that more furans than dioxins are formed. Likewise, dioxin and furan formation is related to the presence of carbon monoxide, and dioxin and furan distribution among its different compounds depends on the chlorine and hydrogen relative composition. This is due to the fact that an increased chlorine availability leads to the formation of compounds bearing a higher chlorine concentration (penta-, hexa-, hepta-, and octachlorides), whereas an increased hydrogen availability leads to the formation of compounds bearing a lower chlorine number (mono, di-, tri-, and tetrachlorides)

The amination of a nitric acid pre-oxidized activated carbon in the adsorption of 4-nitrophenol was evaluated. The Sips model application to the aqueous solution adsorption data, using Sigmoidal Logistic 3 Parameter formula, in the SigmaPlot 12 program was applied. The obtained parameters were compared with those calculated with Statistica 7 program for Sips and Langmuir models. It was found that the activated carbon increases the adsorption from 2.16 to 2.19 mmol·g-1, showing good adsorbent-adsorbate affinity. The system´s characteristic energy parameter calculated with the Langmuir model was 377.47 L·mmol-1, when not considering energy heterogeneity, while from the Sips model was 8.32 (L.mmol-1)1/n. Additionally, it was found that in the mathematical equation Sigmoidal Logistic 3 Parameter of the SigmaPlot program, the 1/x0 value corresponds to the Langmuir-Freundlich model constant KLF, while the parameter value KS in the Sips model is equal to (1/x0)-b in this program. It was concluded that the 4-nitrophenol adsorption on activated carbon is favored by the presence of nitrogen groups on their activated carbon surface.

The effect of textural and chemical properties such as: surface area, pore volume and chemical groups content of the granular activated carbon and monoliths on phenol adsorption in aqueous solutions was studied. Granular activated carbon and monolith samples were produced by chemical activation. They were characterized by using N2 adsorption at 77 K, CO2 adsorption at 273 K, Boehm Titrations and immersion calorimetry in phenol solutions. Microporous materials with different pore size distribution, surface area between 516 and 1685 m2 g−1 and pore volumes between 0.24 and 0.58 cm3 g−1 were obtained. Phenol adsorption capacity of the activated carbon materials increased with increasing BET surface area and pore volume, and is favored by their surface functional groups that act as electron donors. Phenol adsorption capacities are in ranged between 73.5 and 389.4 mg · g−1.

En este artículo se reporta la síntesis de nanopartículas de paladio soportadas en hidroxisales de acetato de zinc y modificadas con un surfactante (LHS-Zn-Ac/Pd0 y LHS-Zn-Suf/Pd0 respectivamente), mediante inserción de [PdCl4]2- y su posterior reducción con etanol en reflujo. Con la inserción de surfactante, la distancia interlaminar de la hidroxisal de partida (LHS-Zn-Ac) se incrementó de 13,8 Å a 29,8 Å, mientras que los materiales finales, que contenían paladio metálico registraron distancias interlaminares de 22,4 Å y 29,4 Å para LHS-Zn-Ac/Pd0 y LHS-Zn-Suf/Pd0 respectivamente. Las hidroxisales de acetato de zinc y de surfactante con nanopartículas metálicas de paladio incorporadas fueron ensayadas como potenciales catalizadores en la reacción de Sonogashira partiendo de fenilacetileno y yoduros de arilo, particularmente yodobenceno o 2-yodofenol, dando lugar a difenilacetileno (32% de rendimiento de producto aislado y purificado) o 2-fenilbenzofurano (18%). Todos los materiales inorgánicos fueron caracterizados mediante las siguientes técnicas: difracción de rayos X (XRD), microscopia electrónica de barrido (SEM y SEM-EDS), microscopia electrónica de transmisión (TEM) y espectroscopía de Infrarrojo con Transformada de Fourier (FT-IR). Por su parte los compuestos orgánicos se caracterizaron por resonancia magnética nuclear (1H-NMR y 13C-NMR) y cromatografía de gases acoplada a espectrometría de masas (GC-MS).

En el presente estudio se muestra la producción de carbón activado a partir de la biomasa residual generada en la producción de palma de aceite, fibra (F) y cáscara (C). Se realizó activación química con ZnCl2 y se evalúo la capacidad de remoción de azul de metileno (AM) para diferentes concentraciones (50, 100 y 150 mg/L). Los resultados mostraron un buen desarrollo de poro por dicho método de activación, con áreas superficiales de 835,3 m2/g para la fibra activada (FA) y 575,1 m2/g para la cáscara activada (CA). Se encontró un buen ajuste de los datos experimentales al modelo cinético de pseudo segundo orden y a las isotermas de Langmuir y Freundlich con capacidades máximas de adsorción de 763,4 y 724,6 mg/g para FA y CA, respectivamente.

La influencia del tiempo de fermentación y secado fue evaluada simultáneamente sobre la capacidad antioxidante (CA) y el contenido de polifenoles totales (PT) de cacao clon CCN-51 (origen ecuatoriano resultante del cruce ICS95xIMC67), buscando seleccionar condiciones de beneficio que permitan obtener un producto de mayor valor agregado desde el punto de vista funcional. Los polifenoles presentes fueron cuantificados usando el método de Folin–Ciocalteu (PT) y tentativamente identificados por LC-MS, mientras que la capacidad antioxidante fue analizada usando el método ORAC. El beneficio comprendió las etapas de microfermentación en cajón y secado natural al sol. Los análisis siguieron un diseño experimental factorial multinivel de 15 experimentos/muestreo. Las diferencias significativas entre niveles fueron establecidas con un análisis de varianza. La CA (expresados en micromoles equivalentes de trolox (TE)/gramos de muestra seca) y el contenido de PT (expresados en miligramos equivalentes de ácido gálico (EAG)/gramo de muestra seca) variaron significativamente durante la fermentación, registrando valores entre 1055,2–347,3μmolTE/gMS y 78,1–33,3mgEAG/gMS, respectivamente. Según el ANOVA, el efecto del secado natural fue poco significativo en la evolución de dichas variables (p0,95 en ambos casos). Las ecuaciones ajustadas fueron usadas para predecir la evolución del contenido de PT de clones tipo Forastero y Amazónico, cuando se comparó con resultados experimentales de otros trabajos, el error relativo porcentual promedio fue de 20%. Finalmente, se estableció que la fermentación ocasiona una disminución en los monómeros y oligómeros presentes (excepto catequina y procianidina B1) que puede relacionarse con la disminución de la CA. La fermentación es la etapa del beneficio que mayor impacto genera en la variación del contenido de PT y la CA.

TiO2-SiO2 coatings on fabric samples were obtained by immersion of 9cm2 of commercial polyester in a TiO2-SiO2 suspension. This suspension was prepared by adding TiO2 P25 to a silica matrix obtained from the hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The aim of this work was to study the relationship between the immersion time of the fabric on the photocatalytic activity and stability of the coating against several cycles of use and washing. Obtained samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR). Evaluation of modified fabrics was performed by self-disinfection tests under 250W/m2 of simulated sunlight using E. coli as model bacteria. In general, all modified fabrics (except that obtained at 2h immersion time) inactivated bacteria in less than 120min and its regrowth was prevented for at least 24h after the disinfection tests. It was determined that low immersion time (3-4h) lead to active and stable fabrics to 3 cycles of use and washing, whereas higher immersion times (12h) lead to more active but unstable fabrics.
