The Protein Data Bank offers a vast file of structural and functional studies on proteins compiled through X-ray crystallography and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging studies. Concepts that aim to elucidate on the morphologic differences between soluble proteins are presented. It is shown that protein folding depends on size and that shape and biologic function of proteins are related. The oligomeric structure of enzymes is explained and enzyme kinetics and cellular mechanisms are cited. A long polypeptide is better than several monomeric proteins because oligomeric interactions enhance a punctuated evolution and prevents a gradualistic course.
