Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) deposition has affected plant community composition and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. This includes changes to the way plants use and recycle nutrients, including effects on nutrient resorption, which is a key process through which plants recover nutrients from tissue during senescence. Nutrient resorption has considerable adaptive and functional significance for plants and helps regulate core ecosystem processes such as decomposition. However, our understanding of how N deposition affects nutrient resorption and, in particular, of how N inputs alter ecosystem resorption via changes to existing species’ resorption compared with changes to community composition remains poor. To disentangle the role of species versus community composition controls driving variation in nutrient resorption responses to N inputs, we carried out an experiment with six different N addition rates in a temperate steppe. We found that species-scale nutrient resorption responses to N enrichment were variable; for example, only half of the measured species reduced both N and P resorption efficiency in response to increased N inputs. In contrast, community-scale responses consistently resulted in reduced N and P resorption. Still, N-induced changes in community composition were a weaker control on overall resorption responses than were the effects on individual species; however, it was the synergistic interaction between the two that resulted in the large total reductions of nutrient resorption in the face of increased N. Taken together, our results highlight that understanding and predicting nutrient resorption responses will be most accurately scaled by accounting not only for species’ reductions in resorption but also for changes in community composition.

The stoichiometric traits of litter play an important role in driving litter decomposition and ecosystem nutrient cycling. While the impacts of nitrogen (N) deposition on the species-level litter stoichiometric traits have been well addressed, we know little about that at community-level, which is supposed to be driven by both intra-specific variation and changes in community composition. We examined the effects of N deposition on litter phosphorus (P) concentration and N:P ratio at both species- and community-level in a semi-arid grassland of northern China. We further decomposed the community-level variations of litter nutritional traits into intra- and inter-specific variation. Nitrogen addition, especially at high rates, substantially changed community composition. Litter P concentrations and N:P ratios significantly varied among different species. Litter P concentrations and N:P ratios at both species- and community-level were positively correlated with N addition rates. Biomass-weighted community-level N:P ratios were more sensitive to N addition than the non-weighted ones, indicating that community composition strengthened the positive impacts of N addition on litter N:P ratios. There was positive co-variation between intra- and inter-specific variation for litter N:P ratio, indicating the consistency of community composition and intra-specific variation in their effects on litter N:P ratio. Our results indicated that the imbalance of N and P following N enrichment would be much larger than the expectation based on the findings from species-level, and thus highlight the importance of changes in community composition in driving the responses of community-level litter N:P stoichiometry to N deposition in the semi-arid grassland.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect and mechanism of hesperidin (HES) on insulin resistance (IR) in the human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (HepG2 cells). HepG2 cells were induced with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as a model of IR and treated with HES at three dosages. Next, the levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), the glucose content, and glucose uptake were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, glucose oxidase-peroxidase method (GOD-POD), or (2-(N-(7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1, 3-diazol-4-yl)amino)-2-deoxyglucose) (2-NBDG). Moreover, the protein expression of toll-like receptors 4 (TLR4), insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS1), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), and glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2) in HepG2 cells treated with HES were assessed via western blotting analysis. In addition, GLUT2 protein expression exposed to HES was detected following treatment with TLR4 inhibitor (HTA125). Our results demonstrated that HES decreased the levels of TNF-α and IL-6, attenuated the glucose content in culture medium and increased glucose uptake in insulin-resistant HepG2 cells in vitro. Moreover, HES upregulated the expression of IRS1 and GLUT2 protein and downregulated the protein expression of TLR4 and NF-κB in insulin-resistant HepG2 cells. The expression of GLUT2 protein had no significant changes when treated with HES after blockade of TLR4. HES attenuated IR in LPS-inducedinsulin-resistant HepG2 cells. Therefore, regulating the IRS1-GLUT2 pathway via TLR4 represents a potential mechanism of HES on IR in HepG2 cells.

Aims The stoichiometric characteristics of plant communities are important controller for several fundamental ecological processes. The effects of environmental changes on community stoichiometric characteristics are driven by intra- and inter-specific variation. However, the relative importance of both pathways has seldom been empirically examined. Methods We quantified the relative contribution of intra- and inter-specific variation to the changes of community nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations after seven-year factorial N addition and mowing treatments in a semi-arid grassland of northern China. Results Nitrogen addition significantly increased community N and P concentrations and N:P ratio. Mowing significantly increased community N concentration and N:P. Intra-specific variation contributed more than inter-specific variation to the total variability of all the nutritional and stoichiometric characteristics, with intra-specific variation accounting for 68%, 70%, and 75% of the total variation in community-level N, P, and N:P, respectively. Negative covariations between the contribution of intra- and inter-specific variation occurred for community N and P concentrations. Further, N addition and mowing interacted to affect the impacts of intra- and inter-specific variation on community N concentration and N:P stoichiometry. Conclusions Our results highlight different ways of trait selection for N addition and mowing treatments. Interactions between those two factors make it more difficult to accurately predict the responses of plant-mediated biogeochemical cycles under co-occurrence of environmental changes.

Nitrogen (N) enrichment has great consequences on several fundamental ecological processes through its impacts on plant nutrition traits (i.e. nutrient concentration and stoichiometric ratios); however, the extent to which the effects of N enrichment depend on phosphorus (P) availability are less well understood. While there is mounting evidence for the species-specific responses of plant nutrition traits to nutrient enrichment, we know little about the changes at the community-level. Here, we measured community-level biomass weighted (CWM) and non-weighted (CM) plant N and P concentrations and N:P ratio in a temperate meadow steppe after four years factorial N and P addition, with biomass and nutrition traits of each species in each plot being recorded. Nitrogen addition significantly increased community-level N concentration, decreased P concentration, and enhanced community N:P ratio. Phosphorus addition had no impacts on community-level N concentration, significantly increased P concentration, and reduced community N:P ratio. The impacts of N addition on community nutrition traits were not dependent on P addition and the community-level nutrition trait responses to N and P additions were primarily driven by intraspecific trait variation (ITV) rather than by species turnover. Community-level nutrition traits in the temperate meadow steppe were sensitive to the projected N and P enrichment. While nutrient enrichment had substantially changed community composition, its impacts on community nutrition traits were driven by ITV. Nitrogen deposition would result in imbalance of N and P in plant community, as indicated by the substantial increase in community-level N:P, which was not affected by increased P availability.

Hawk tea, prepared from the young leaves of Litsea coreana Levl. var. lanuginosa, is consumed as a tonic in China. Essential oils (EOs) from Hawk tea collected from six habitats in China were obtained by hydro distillation. Extraction yields ranged from 0.42% (g/g) in samples from Ningguo to 0.11% (g/g) in samples from Qingchuan. A total of 50 compounds in the six EO samples were identified by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer. The dominant compounds were citral (4.67–21.12%), caryophyllene (2.31–15.74%), dodecanal (2.10–15.38%), α-humulene (1.45–13.56%) and decanal (1.91–13.17%). Altitude may contribute the greatest effect on the chemical variation of the six EO samples. All the EO samples showed bioactivities. Among them, the EOs from the Pingshan sample showed the best ABTS radical scavenging activity (78.67 mg TEs /g) and better antimicrobial activities (MIC = 156.25–625 μg/mL) and had stronger DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 0.71 mg/mL) than BHT (IC50 = 0.76 mg/mL). The EOs from the Ningguo sample showed the highest reducing power (26.06 mg Fe2+/g) in a FRAP assay, the best inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase (1.71 mg/mL) and was the most cytotoxic (66.03–77.03 μg/mL) in an MTS assay. Therefore, the EOs from Hawk tea could be suitable for commercialization in the food, cosmetic or medical industries. Due to the activities of their EOs, plants growing in Pingshan and Ningguo are the optimal candidates.

Background/Aims Fufang Zhenzhu Tiao Zhi (FTZ) capsule is a Chinese herbal preparation under the guidance of professor Guo Jiao’s new theory of “Tiaogan Qishu Huazhuo” for disorders of glucose and lipid metabolism for more than twenty yares, which has been demonstrated to exhibit potential anti-aging effects such as regulation of glucose and lipid metabolisms and antiinflammatory and antioxidative effects. This study attempts to reveal the anti-intestinal aging effect and possible mechanism of FTZ. Methods The mice were divided into three groups: the control group, model group and treatment group. The treatment group was given 1.0 g/kg body weight of FTZ extract administered by oral gavage once a day for 12 consecutive weeks. Age-related alterations such as HE staining of intestinal tissue morphology, mRNA levels of intestinal telomerase and inflammatory cytokines were observed Fecal samples were used for ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF/MS) and 16S rRNA gene sequencing analyses to reveal age-related metabolic perturbations and gut flora disorders to demonstrate the effects of FTZ. Results Emerged pathological morphology of intestinal tissues, upregulated relative expression level of gut inflammatory factors and decreased relative expression level of telomerase mRNA in aging mice illustrated characteristic senescent phenotypes in model group. FTZ treatment significantly lowered intestinal inflammation levels, enhanced telomerase activity, partially reversed the fecal metabolites abnormalities and restored the disorders of intestinal flora. Multiple potential metabolites were associated with linoleic acid, glycerophospholipid, α-linolenic acid, biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and glycerolipid metabolisms. Several decreased beneficial butyrate-producing bacteria like S24-7, possible Alkaliphilus belonging to the Clostridia class and increased harmful bacteria such as potentially toxic metabolite hydrogen sulfide-producer Bilophila and Desulfovibrio, inflammation-mediator Mucispirillum were determined in present aging mice. These age-related poor alterations could be partially attenuated by FTZ treatment. Conclusion The pathologic changes of intestinal senescence and the decrease of telomerase mRNA in elderly mice was observed. FTZ may sever as a novel delaying intestinal aging strategy via three pathways for anti-inflammatory, improving gut metabolites and gut flora. This study not only provided biological basis for the theory of treating different diseases with the same treatment in TCM, but also provided objective evidence for incorporating aging into the system of“glucose-lipid metabolism disease”.

International audience; The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is widely used in modern biology and medicine. However, PCR artifacts can complicate the interpretation of PCR-based results. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal RNA gene cluster is the consensus fungal barcode marker and suspected PCR artifacts have been reported in many studies, especially for the analyses of environmental fungal samples. At present, the patterns of PCR artifacts in the whole fungal ITS region (ITS1+5.8S+ITS2) are not known. In this study, we analyzed the error rates of PCR at three template complexity levels using the divergent copies of ITS from the mushroom Agaricus subrufescens. Our results showed that PCR using the Phusion High-Fidelity DNA Polymerase has a per nucleotide error rate of about 4 x 10(-6) per replication. Among the detected mutations, transitions were much more frequent than transversions, insertions, and deletions. When divergent alleles were mixed as templates in the same reaction, a significant proportion (similar to 30%) of recombinant molecules were detected. The in vitro mixed-template results were comparable to those obtained from using the genomic DNA of the original mushroom specimen as template. Our results indicate that caution should be in place when interpreting ITS sequences from individual fungal specimens, especially those containing divergent ITS copies. Similar results could also happen to PCR-based analyses of other multicopy DNA fragments as well as single-copy DNA sequences with divergent alleles in diploid organisms.

Biogas projects are rapidly expanding in China, but there is insufficient cropland to degrade these biogas residues. Mushroom cultivation has been used to degrade various agricultural wastes. In this study, to screen the feasibility of utilizing biogas residues as potential substrates for the cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus, seven different concentrations (0 to 60%) of biogas residue mixed with cottonseed hull, wheat bran, and lime were used to cultivate P. ostreatus. The mycelial growth rate, mycelial colonization time, yield, biological efficiency, chemical compositions, and content of four heavy metals, Cd (cadmium), Pb (lead), Hg (mercury), and As (arsenic), were analyzed. The results showed that 10 to 30% of biogas residue mixed in the substrates induced the growth of P. ostreatus mycelia faster than the others. A lower percentage (10 to 20%) of biogas residue added to the substrates is beneficial to the production and nutrient components of P. ostreatus, and the fruiting bodies produced on biogas residue-containing substrates conform to the safety standards for edible mushrooms. Although the total harvest is not significantly increased when biogas residue is added, the utilization of cheap biogas residues can conceivably reduce the practical cost and benefit the environment.

Nitrogen (N) deposition is projected to increase over the coming decades, with consequences on soil N transformation. Soil N mineralization is an important process regulating soil N availability. However, it is unclear how the responses of soil N mineralization to increasing N deposition are controlled by biotic and abiotic factors. Here, we examined the effects of increasing N addition rates on soil net N mineralization, net nitrification, and N-cycling functional gene abundance in a temperate meadow steppe after six years treatments. We found that N addition significantly increased the rates of soil net N mineralization and nitrification. Nitrogen addition rates were positively correlated with the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria amoA gene, but negatively correlated with that of other N-related functional genes. The N-induced enhancement of net N transformations were predominantly driven by the enhanced quantity and quality of soil substrates, but not by N-related functional genes. Decreased soil pH also contributed to the enhancement of net N transformations. Our findings highlight the importance of soil substrate availability and soil pH in driving grassland soil N transformation processes under the scenario of increasing N deposition.

Nitrogen (N) addition and mowing can significantly influence micronutrient cycling in grassland ecosystems. It remains largely unknown about how different forms of added N affect micronutrient status in plant-soil systems. We examined the effects of different N compounds of (NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3, and urea with and without mowing on micronutrient Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn in soil-plant systems in a meadow steppe. The results showed that (NH4)2SO4 addition had a stronger negative effect on soil pH compared with NH4NO3 and urea, resulting in higher increases in soil available Fe and Mn herein. Nitrogen addition decreased plant community-level biomass weighted (hereafter referred to as community-level) Fe concentration but increased Mn concentration, with a greater effect under (NH4)2SO4 addition. Community-level Cu concentration increased with (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 addition only under mowing treatment. Mowing synergistically interacted with urea addition to increase community-level Mn and Zn concentrations even with decreased soil organic matter, possibly because of compensatory plant growth and thus higher plant nutrient uptake intensity under mowing treatment. Overall, responses of plant-soil micronutrients to N addition varied with mowing and different N compounds, which were mainly regulated by soil physicochemical properties and plant growth. Different magnitude of micronutrient responses in plants and soils shed light on the necessity to consider the role of various N compounds in biogeochemical models when projecting the effects of N enrichment on grassland ecosystems.

The responses of functional structures in plant communities to global change drivers is predicted to be driven by both species turnover and intraspecific trait variability (ITV). However, the relative importance of those two drivers is not well-known, which retards our ability to predict the functional changes of plant community under global change scenarios. We hypothesized that ITV rather than species turnover would drive the nutritional responses of plant community at the initial stage after nitrogen and water enrichment. We measured community weighted means (CWM) and non-weighted means (CM) of foliar N and P concentrations and N:P ratio in a temperate steppe after two years factorial N and water addition. Species composition and nutrition traits of each species were recorded in each plot. The impacts of N addition on community level nutrition traits were highly dependent on water conditions, as indicated by significant interactive effects between N and water addition. Nitrogen addition significantly increased CWM of foliar N, but only under ambient water condition. Water addition decreased CWM of foliar P and increased that of N:P. Consistent with our hypothesis, communities responded to both N and water addition after two years treatments mainly through ITV. Our results highlight the importance of ITV in driving short-term responses of community functional composition to the increases of nitrogen and water availability in the temperate steppe. The existence of interactive effects of N and water addition would make it more difficult to predict the impacts of N deposition on plant-mediated biogeochemical cycling under the scenarios of precipitation regime changes than previously assumed.

Autotoxicity is among the major reasons that are causing continuous cropping obstacle. It is a toxic influence of chemicals released from one plant species on the germination and growth of individuals of the same species. Here, in order to analyze the autotoxicity of tobacco root exudates, root exudates were collected from tobacco plants cultivated in both cultural solution and natural soil. Through ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple-quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry main autotoxic chemical substances in the root exudates were identified. Further, the autotoxic effects of the suspected autotoxins on seed germination (including germination rate, germination potential, germination index and vigor index) and seedling growth were also analyzed. As a result, dibutyl phthalate (or diisobutyl phthalate), dioctyl phthalate and diisooctyl phthalate were identified in tobacco root exudates. Globally, chronic nitrogen (N) deposition into terrestrial ecosystems has resulted in changes in community composition, depending on the responses of co-existing species to increasing soil N availability. The levels of plant non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) produced by photosynthesis are associated with leaf N content, and together they represent the capital of a plant for its life including competitive ability. However, the specific ways that concentrations of plant NSCs, and also N, influence the growth of plants, and thus their productivity, are still abscue. Here, we explored the effect of variations in plant leaf NSCs (starch and soluble sugars) and N concentrations on the growth of plants with different soil N uptake capacities, i.e. two grasses (Leymus chinensis and Stipa baicalensis), two forbs (Potentilla tanacetifolia and Galium verum), and one legume (Thermopsis lanceolate) in Inner Mongolian grasslands subjected to three N addition rates (i.e., 0, 10, or 20 g N m−2 yr−1) and three N forms [i.e., NH4NO3, (NH4)2SO4, or CO(NH2)2] for four years. Irrespective of N addition rate and N form, N addition significantly increased aboveground biomass of the grasses, but not that of the forbs or the legume. The grasses had higher increase in N concentrations than the forbs and the legume. N addition increased the starch concentrations of grasses, but decreased that of forbs and the legume. Changes in the aboveground biomass of all tested plant species were significantly positively correlated with changes in concentrations of both NSCs and N. Our results indicate that, irrespective of the N addition rates and N forms, greater increase in NSCs and N concentrations contributed to higher aboveground productivity in grasses, but not in forbs and legumes. These results imply that future nitrogen deposition will benefit grasses over other plant forms, and thus the former may become more dominant in grasslands in northern China.

Wheat yellow mosaic disease (WYM) became more serious in China in the recent years. Cultivation of resistant varieties is the major strategy for disease control. To identify WYM resistant genes in Chinese wheat cultivar ‘Yining Xiaomai’, a population of 106 recombinant inbred lines (RIL) from a cross between Yining Xiaomai and Zhen 9523 (WYM-susceptible) was generated. Phenotypic data of WYM resistance of the RILs were collected over three successive years in a naturally infected field nursery. A linkage map consisting of 29 genetic linkage groups involving 144 SSR or EST markers was constructed, using the JoinMap 4.0 software. By composite interval mapping using IciMapping 4.0, a stable major QTL associated with WYM resistance, designated QYm.nau-2D, was mapped to chromosome 2D which explained up to 93.2 % of the phenotypic variance. More linkage markers including 11 SNP and 11 STS markers were developed to saturate the QYm.nau-2D region. The presence of WYM resistance was further validated using a resistant RIL derived F2 population consisting 318 lines. A high resolution map at QYm.nau-2D region was re-constructed which established a basis for map-based cloning of the resistant gene. Four markers were validated to be diagnostic markers to discriminate 195 breeding lines with known pedigree. These markers could be used in marker-assisted selection to breeding WYM resistance.

Bromodomains (BRDs) are protein modules that selectively recognize histones as a "reader" by binding to an acetylated lysine substrate. The human BRD4 has emerged as a promising drug target for a number of disease pathways, and several potent BRD inhibitors have been discovered experimentally recently. However, the detailed inhibition mechanism especially for the inhibitor binding kinetics is not clear. Herein, by employing classical molecular dynamics (MD) and state-of-the-art density functional QM/MM MD simulations, the dynamic characteristics of ZA-loop in BRD4 are revealed. And then the correlation between binding pocket size and ZA-loop motion is elucidated. Moreover, our simulations found that the compound (-)-JQ1 could be accommodated reasonably in thermodynamics whereas it is infeasible in binding kinetics against BRD4. Its racemate (+)-JQ1 proved to be both thermodynamically reasonable and kinetically achievable against BRD4, which could explain the previous experimental results that (+)-JQ1 shows a high inhibitory effect toward BRD4 (IC50 is 77 nM) while (-)-JQ1 is inactive (>10 μM). Furthermore, the L92/L94/Y97 in the ZA-loop and Asn140 in the BC-loop are identified to be critical residues in (+)-JQ1 binding/releasing kinetics. All these findings shed light on further selective inhibitor design toward BRD family, by exploiting the non-negligible ligand binding kinetics features and flexible ZA-loop motions of BRD, instead of only the static ligand-protein binding affinity.

Coumarins is a kind of important components in traditional Chinese medicine. Due to their special structure, they have significant pathological connections with many diseases. In this research, we established a rapid method to analyse the coumarins from Fructus citri Sarcodactylis by using the technique of ultra-performance liquid chromatography with quadruple time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Twenty-one coumarins were identified from Fructus citri Sarcodactylis, 10 were discovered for the first time. At the same time, a rapid sensitive method for identifying coumarins from Fructus citri Sarcodactylis was established.

The fluorescence intensity of double-stranded DNA (ds-DNA) hybridized by fluorescent 2-aminopurine (2-AP) oligonucleotide probe and different mismatched bases was studied by fluorescence spectra in this paper. The experiment designed and synthesised four oligonucleotide sequences with the bases of adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), thymine (T), and determined the fluorescence intensity of the mismatched double-stranded DNA. The results implied that the fluorescence intensity of oligonucleotide probe was varied due to different mismatched bases. And the fluorescence intensity was 546.9 with the ratio of 3.13, which showed a significantly increase as the mismatched base was A. While the mismatched base was T, the fluorescence intensity quenched to 43.26, as the ratio was 0.25. For C and G, the fluorescence intensity of 2-AP was 99.14 and 89.03, respectively, which showed a different degree of reduction.

CuO nanoparticles with five morphologies were synthesized in large quantities using a simple method. They were in situ reduced to metallic Cu for the electroreduction of CO2. Alcohols with excellent selectivity for ethanol were obtained. The specific morphology was demonstrated to be more electrocatalytically active than others by multiple methods.

A new eudesmanolide, 1-oxo-11αH-eudesma-2,4(14)-dien-12,8β-olide (1), and four new guaianolides, 9β,10β-epoxy-4α-hydroxy-1βH,11αH-guaian-12,8α-olide (2), 9β,10β-epoxy-4α-hydroxy-1βH,11βH-guaian-12,8α-olide (3), 4α,9α-dihydroxy-1βH,11αH-guai-10(14)-en-12,8α-olide (4), and 4α,9α-dihydroxy-1βH,11βH-guai-10(14)-en-12,8α-olide (5), together with one known eudesmanolide and two known germacranolides, were isolated from the whole plants of Carpesium triste. Their structures and relative configurations were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods, including 2D-NMR techniques.

Background: In the previous in vitro study, we found that simvastatin decreased the protein expression of CD36, the scavenger receptor, and calpain-1, the Ca2+-sensitive cysteine protease, in oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL)-treated macrophages. In this in vivo study, we investigated whether simvastatin downregulates the expression of CD36 and calpain-1 and inhibits the inflammation and atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E knockout (ApoE KO) mice. Methods: Twenty male 6-week-old ApoE KO mice were divided into 2 groups: the ApoE KO group and the ApoE KO + simvastatin (ApoE KO + Sim) group. Atherosclerotic lesions were evaluated and the expressions of CD68, CD36, and calpain-1 in aorta were examined. Results: Simvastatin inhibited the atherosclerotic lesion in ApoE KO mice. In addition, simvastatin reduced the contents of oxLDL, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in serum, decreased the mRNA and protein expressions of CD36 and reduced the mRNA expression of TNF-α and IL-6 in the aortas. Furthermore, simvastatin reduced the calpain activity and the protein expression of calpain-1 in the aorta. Conclusion: The results suggested that the attenuation of atherosclerotic lesions in ApoE KO mice by simvastatin might be associated with the downregulations of CD36 and calpain-1 and with inflammation.

A new sesquiterpenoid, 1α,3α-dihydroxy-5,7,8,11αH-eudesm-4(15)-en-8β,12-olide (1), together with three known compounds, granilin (2), β-sitosterol (3), and β-daucosterol (4), was isolated from the ethanol extract of the flower buds of Carpesium triste. Their structures were elucidated by analysis of spectroscopic data, especially13C NMR and 1D NOE spectra.

To improve the catalytic efficiency toward the electroreduction of organic halides, a Ag-exchanged Y zeolite (Ag–Y), which was characterized by XRD, BET, ICP, SEM, TEM, XPS, H2-TPR and O2-TPO, has been prepared and modified on glass carbon (GC) electrodes.

Wheat yellow mosaic (WYM) caused by wheat yellow mosaic bymovirus (WYMV) has been growing as one of the most serious diseases affecting wheat production in China. In this study, the association of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) governing WYMV resistance with molecular markers was established using 164 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from 'Xifeng Wheat' (highly resistant) × 'Zhen 9523' (highly susceptible). Phenotypic data of WYMV resistance of the RILs were collected from 4-year, two-location replicated field trials. A molecular marker-based linkage map, which was comprised of 273 non-redundant loci and represented all the 21 wheat chromosomes, was constructed with the JoinMap 4.0 software. Using the Windows QTL Cartographer V2.5 software, three QTLs associated with WYMV resistance, QYm.njau-3B.1, QYm.njau-5A.1 and QYm.njau-7B.1, were detected on chromosomes 3BS, 5AL, and 7BS, respectively. The favorable allele effects were all contributed by 'Xifeng Wheat'. Among the three QTLs, QYm.njau-3B.1 and QYm.njau-5A.1 were detected in all the four trials and the overall mean, and could explain 3.3-10.2% and 25.9-53.7% of the phenotypic variation, respectively, while QYm.njau-7B.1 was detected in one trial and the overall mean and explained 4.9 and 3.3% of the phenotypic variation, respectively. A large portion of the variability for WYMV response was explained by a major QTL, QYm.njau-5A.1. The relationship of the molecular markers linked with QYm.njau-5A.1 and the WYMV resistance was further validated using a secondary F(2) population. The results showed that three markers, i.e., Xwmc415.1, CINAU152, and CINAU153, were closely linked to QYm.njau-5A.1 with the genetic distances of 0.0, 0.0, and 0.1 cM, respectively, indicating they should be useful in marker-assisted selection (MAS) wheat breeding for WYMV resistance. A panel of germplasm collection consisting of 46 wheat varieties with known WYMV response phenotypes was further used to validate the presence and effects of QYm.njau-5A.1 and the above three markers. It was found that QYm.njau-5A.1 was present in 12 of the 34 WYMV-resistant varieties.

The degradation of rhodamine B (RB) in aqueous solution by Fenton’s reagent was studied. After 30 min, the 96.2% removal of RB in water (pH = 3.0, T = 25 °C) was achieved when the initial concentrations of Fe2+, H2O2 and RB were 0.5 mM, 5 mM and 10 mg/L, respectively. A higher initial concentration of Fe2+ and H2O2 resulted in a higher efficiency in RB discolorization. The removal of RB was dependent strongly on the pH value of solution. Increasing the reaction temperature was beneficial for the RB degradation. Based on the Arrhenius equation, the activation energy (Ea) was calculated to be 16.78 kJ/mol from rate constants at different temperatures. The degradation of RB by Fenton’s reagent was inhibited by the presence of oxalic acid.

Styrylquinoline derivatives are demonstrated to be HIV-1 integrase inhibitors. On the basis of our previous CoMFA analysis of a series of styrylquinoline derivatives, N-[(2-substituted-styryl)-5-chloro-8-hydroxyquinolin-7-yl]-benzenesulfonamide derivatives were designed and synthesized, and their possible HIV IN inhibitory activity was evaluated.

From the whole plants of Ligularia duciformis, four new sesquiterpenoids, 3β-acetoxy-6β-methoxyeremophila-7(11),9(10)-dien-12,8β-olide (1), 3β-acetoxy-8α-hydroxy-6β-methoxyeremophila-7(11),9(10)-dien-12,8β-olide (2), 3β-acetoxy-10β-hydroxy-6β,8β-dimethoxyeremophil-7(11)-en-12,8α-olide (3), and 3β-acetoxy-6β,8β,10β-trihydroxyeremophil-7(11)-en-12,8α-olide (4) were isolated. Their structures were established by high-field NMR techniques (1H,1H-COSY, 13C-APT, HMQC, HMBC, and NOESY) and HR-ESI-MS analysis, together with comparison of the spectroscopic data with those of structurally related compounds. In addition, the cytotoxicity of the new compounds against human hepatic cancer cells Bel-7402, human pneumonic cancer cells A-549, and human colonic cancer cells HCT-8 were evaluated, the new compounds showed no cytotoxicity against the three tumor cells (all IC50 values >200 μM).

The ethyl acetate extract from leaves of Illicium micranthum Dunn exhibited radical scavenging ability on DPPH radical-scavenging assay. Further phytochemical investigation led to the isolation of a new sesquiterpenoid, illicinolide C (1), and eight known compounds (2–9). The structural elucidations of the compounds were based on spectroscopic methods and by comparison of their spectroscopic data with those reported in the references. Except compound 9, all the other compounds were isolated from I. micranthum Dunn for the first time, while compounds 1 and 2 were new to the Illiciaceae family.

A new eudesmanolide, 1-oxo-11αH-eudesma-2,4(14)-dien-12,8β-olide (1), and four new guaianolides, 9β,10β-epoxy-4α-hydroxy-1βH,11αH-guaian-12,8α-olide (2), 9β,10β-epoxy-4α-hydroxy-1βH,11βH-guaian-12,8α-olide (3), 4α,9α-dihydroxy-1βH,11αH-guai-10(14)-en-12,8α-olide (4), and 4α,9α-dihydroxy-1βH,11βH-guai-10(14)-en-12,8α-olide (5), together with one known eudesmanolide and two known germacranolides, were isolated from the whole plants of Carpesium triste. Their structures and relative configurations were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods, including 2D-NMR techniques.

4-Oxo-4H-quinolizine-3-carboxylic acid derivatives bearing sulfamido, carboxylamido, benzimidazole and benzothiazole substituents have been designed and synthesized. The structures of these new compounds were confirmed by (1)H-NMR, (13)C- NMR, IR and ESI (or HRMS) spectra. Compounds were screened for possible HIV integrase inhibitory activity.
