Developing selectively targeted photothermal agents to reduce side effects in photothermal therapy remains a great challenge. Inspired by the key role of endoplasmic reticulum in the protein synthesis and intracellular signal transduction, particularly for the immunogenic cell death induced by endoplasmic reticulum stress, we developed an endoplasmic reticulum-targeted organic photothermal agent (Ts-PT-RGD) for enhancing photothermal therapy of tumor. The photothermal agent was covalently attached with 4-methylbenzenesulfonamide and cyclic Arg-Gly-Asp (cRGD) peptide for realizing the targeting of endoplasmic reticulum and tumor cell. Owing to its amphiphilic properties, it readily self-assembles in water to form nanoparticles. The photothermal agent possesses excellent photophysical properties and biological compatibility. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrate that it can actively target endoplasmic reticulum and effectively ablate tumor with near-infrared laser.

The effects of different species and concentrations’ signal molecules on aerobic activated sludge system were investigated through batch experiments. Results showed that the fastest NH4+-N oxidization rate and the most extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion were obtained by adding 5 nmol/L N-hexanoyl-L-homoserine lactone (C6-HSL) into the aerobic activated sludge. Further study investigated the correlation among N-acyl-homoserine lactones-mediated quorum sensing (AHLs-mediated QS), nutrient removal performances and microbial communities with the long-term addition of 5 nmol/L C6-HSL. It was found that C6-HSL-manipulation could enhance the stability and optimize the decontamination performance of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) system. Microbial compositions considerably shifted with long-term C6-HSL-manipulation. Exogenous C6-HSL-manipulation inhibited quorum quenching-related (QQ-related) activities and enhanced QS-related activities during the stable period. The proposed C6-HSL-manipulation might be a potential technology to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in AGS, which could provide a theoretical foundation for the realization of more stable biological wastewater treatments.

A novel vortex-assisted dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction method based on deep eutectic solvent (VA–DLLME–DES) completed in syringe has been established to extract 12 quinolones from honey. This method is an improvement of traditional DLLME. In this work, the green DES prepared with heptanoic acid and thymol was used for extractant rather than traditional organic extraction solvent. Without centrifugation, the phases were separated in the way of removing aqueous phase by pushing the syringe and extractant phase was collected for ultra performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS) analysis. The stability of DES and some experimental parameters (type, molar ratios and volume of extraction solvent, type and volume of dispersant, vortex time and effect of pH and NaCl) were evaluated. In the range of 2–100 ng/mL, the proposed method showed good linearities (r2 ranged from 0.996 to 0.999). The extraction recoveries were obtained in the range of 75.01%–117.05% and relative standard deviations were less than 13.83% for inter- (n = 6) and intra-day (n = 3) precisions. The limits of detection and quantification were 3 ng g−1 and 10 ng g−1, respectively. The developed method with the advantages of simple operation, short extraction time and less consumption organic solvent provides a technical idea for green, simple and time-saving sample preparation methods.

Because of its high energy density, the manganese-rich lithium layered material is a potential cathode material for power batteries. In order to effectively strengthen the comprehensive performance of lithium-rich layered material, different amounts of YPO4 compounds were used to wet chemically coat the cathode materials. The LMNCO, 0.5-YPO4, 1.0-YO4 and 3.0-YPO4 cathode materials are tested by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, constant current charge and discharge test, and EIS. Facts show that the positive electrode material coated with YPO4 has better cycle performance and rate performance. The 1.0-YPO4 sample material has the best performance. After 50 cycles of 0.5 C, its discharge capacity can still be as high as 207.4 mAhg-1.The comprehensive performance of the cathode material is improved after being coated with YPO4, which is owing to the coating of YPO4. The YPO4 layer weakens the electron transfer resistance, and suppress the phase transformation of the Electrode material and the formation of the SEI film.

A magnetic nanoparticle (MNP)-based lateral flow immunochromatography assay (LFIA) was established to detect fluoroquinolones (FQs) in milk. This method is an improvement of traditional Au nanoparticle (AuNP)-based LFIA. Compared with AuNP-labeled antibody, the combination between MNPs and antibody is stronger and more stable, and the preparation process is convenient. In this study, the color intensity of MNPs-LFIA test strip was analyzed, which laid a research foundation for magnetic quantitative analysis and high sensitivity analysis of LFIA. The limits of detection (LODs) for 10 FQs in phosphate buffer (PB) solution ranged from 1 to 5 ng/mL, and in milk ranged from 2 to 20 ng/mL. The recovery in spiked milk sample ranged from 16.47 to 83.67%. The log functions of analyte concentration and T/C value were fitted into a linear equation. The specificity of the MNPs-LFIA is satisfactory, without cross-reaction with antibiotics from other chemical classes. The results of this method are consistent with those of ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, indicating the MNPs-LFIA method is reliable and accurate. As far as we know, this is the first time that MNPs-LIFA has been applied to the detection of FQs in milk.

In dual-ion batteries (DIBs) utilizing organic electrolyte solutions, the combinations of electrolyte salt and solvent serve as a determiner of the electrochemical performance of graphite electrode partially because solvent participates in the anion intercalation procedure. In this case, every solvated-anion@graphite intercalation compound possesses the characteristic intercalated gallery height. However, in Li/graphite DIBs with concentrated LiTFSI (lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide))-alkyl phosphates (ca. trimethyl, triethyl, tripropyl, tributyl phosphate) solutions, solvated-TFSI-@graphite intercalation compounds have the nearly identical intercalated gallery height of about 0.803 nm, which may be mainly attributed to both the big size of TFSI- anion and the rigid PO4 framework of these alkyl phosphate solvents.

Despite tremendous efforts aimed at devising methods for stereoselective alkene synthesis, critical challenges are yet to be addressed. Direct access to a diverse range of 1-aryl(boryl)-1-methyl-functionalized tri- and tetrasubstituted trans alkenes, entities that are prevalent in many important molecules, through a catalytic manifold from readily available α-olefin substrates remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that catalytic amounts of a non-precious N-heterocyclic carbene–Ni(I) complex in conjunction with a sterically bulky base promote site- and trans-selective union of monosubstituted olefins with a wide array of electrophilic reagents to deliver tri- and tetrasubstituted alkenes in up to 92% yield and >98% regio- and stereoselectivity. The protocol is amenable to the preparation of carbon- and heteroatom-substituted C=C bonds, providing distinct advantages over existing transformations. Utility is highlighted through concise stereoselective synthesis of biologically active compounds. Stereoselective synthesis of tri-and tetrasubstituted olefins is challenging due to the usually low energy difference between their E/Z isomers. Now, access to these molecules in high E:Z ratios from monosubstituted olefins is achieved through a sequential nickel-catalysed Heck reaction and alkene migration.

Alkene hydrocarbofunctionalization represents one of the most important classes of chemical transformations, but related branched-selective examples with unactivated olefins are scarce. Here, we report that catalytic amounts of a dimeric Ni(I) complex and an exogenous alkoxide base promote Markovnikov-selective hydroarylation(alkenylation) of unactivated and activated olefins using organo bromides or triflates derived from widely available phenols and ketones. Products bearing aryl- and alkenyl-substituted tertiary and quaternary centers could be isolated in up to 95% yield and >99:1 regioisomeric ratios. Contrary to previous dual-catalytic methods that rely on metal-hydride atom transfer (MHAT) to the olefin prior to carbofunctionalization with a cocatalyst, our mechanistic evidence points toward a nonradical reaction pathway that begins with site-selective carbonickelation across the C═C bond followed by hydride transfer using alkoxide as the hydride source. Utility of the single-catalyst protocol is highlighted through the synthesis of medicinally relevant scaffolds.

Palladium nanoparticles were prepared via solvothermal method using Na2PdCl4, AgNO3, and oleylamine. By choosing the optimal reaction time and reaction temperature, palladium nanoparticles with regular morphology and size within 10 nm were prepared. A vacuum freeze drying was applied to prevent aggregation of nanoparticles.

The regulated crystallization of perovskite and highly repeatable preparation are decisive challenges for large-scale flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we synthesize an oil-soluble poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (Oil-PEDOT) as a hole transport layer (HTL). The non-wetting Oil-PEDOT HTL can promote the quality of large-area flexible perovskite films because of its optimized crystallinity and printability. The Oil-PEDOT layer also delivers desirable conductivity and charge transport without a complex doping. Consequently, the flexible PSCs with Oil-PEDOT HTL achieve an efficiency of 19.51% and 16.70% based on 1.05 and 22.50 cm2, respectively. Moreover, these large-scale flexible PSCs demonstrate remarkable mechanical robustness, and the efficiency exhibits 93% retention after 7,000 bending cycles. These results show that the Oil-PEDOT is a potentially efficient HTL for fabricating efficient large-scale flexible PSCs.

Modified DNA aptamers incorporated with amino-acid like side chains or drug-like ligands can offer unique advantages and enhance specificity as affinity ligands. Thy-1 membrane glycoprotein (THY1 or CD90) was previously identified as a biomarker candidate of neovasculature in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The current study developed and evaluated modified DNA X-aptamers targeting THY1 in PDAC. The expression and glycosylation of THY1 in PDAC tumor tissues were assessed using immunohistochemistry and quantitative proteomics. Bead-based X-aptamer library that contains 10(8) different sequences was used to screen for high affinity THY1 X-aptamers. The sequences of the X-aptamers were analyzed with the next-generation sequencing. The affinities of the selected X-aptamers to THY1 were quantitatively evaluated with flow cytometry. Three high affinity THY1 X-aptamers, including XA-B217, XA-B216 and XA-A9, were selected after library screening and affinity binding evaluation. These three X-aptamers demonstrated a high binding affinity and specificity to THY1 protein and the THY1 expressing cell lines, using THY1 antibody as a comparison. The development of these X-aptamers provides highly specific and non-immunogenic affinity ligands for THY1 binding in the context of biomarker development and clinical applications. They could be further exploited to assist molecular imaging of PDAC targeting THY1.

The hydrogen abstraction (HB) and addition reactions (HD) by H radicals are examined on a series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) monomers and models of quasi-surfaces using quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) method. The QCT results reproduce the rate constants of HB reactions on PAH monomers from density function theory (DFT) in the range of 1500-2700 K. The PAH size has a minor impact on the rates of HB reactions especially at temperatures beyond 2100 K. By contrast, HD reactions have a clear size dependence and a larger PAH yields a higher rate. It is also found that the preferred reaction pathway changing from HB to HD reactions at ~1900 K. The rates of surface HB and HD reactions exceed those in the gas phase by nearly a factor of magnitude. Further analysis on the detailed trajectory of QCT method reveals that about 50% of the surface reactions can be attributed to the events of surface diffusion, which depends on the local energy transfer in the gas-surface interactions. However, this phenomenon is not preferred in PAH monomers as expected. Our finding here highlights the misinterpretation of surface reactions as the product of the first collision between gaseous species and particle surface, and surface diffusion induced reactions should be accounted for in the rates of surface HB and HD reactions. Rate constants of HB and HD reactions on each reactive site (surface zig-zag, surface free-edge and pocket free-edge sites) are calculated by QCT method, which are recommended for the further development of surface chemistry models in soot formation.

The aim of this research was to screen the ZINC15 database to select lead compounds and drug candidates which can inhibit B-RAF (V600E). In order to identify drugs potentially inhibited B-RAF (V600E), numerous modules of Discovery Studio 4.5 were employed. Structure-based screening using LibDock was carried out followed by ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion) and toxicity prediction. CDOCKER was performed to demonstrate the binding affinity and mechanism between ligands and B-RAF(V600E). To evaluate whether ligand-receptor complexes were stable, molecular dynamics were employed. Two novel natural compounds (ZINC000100168592 and ZINC000049784088) from ZINC15 database were found binding to B-RAF(V600E) with more favorable interaction energy in comparison with the reference drug Vemurafenib. Also, they were predicted with less ames mutagenicity, rodent carcinogenicity, non-developmental toxic potential and tolerance to cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6). The molecular dynamics simulation analysis indicated that the compound-B-RAF(V600E) complexes had more favorable potential energy compared with Vemurafenib and they can exist in natural environments stably. The result of this study shows that ZINC000100168592 and ZINC000049784088 are ideal leading potential compounds to inhibit B-RAF(V600E). Efficient access to two enantiomers of one chiral compound is critical for the discovery of drugs. However, it is still a challenging problem owing to the difficulty in obtaining two enantiomers of one chiral catalyst. Here, we report a general method to obtain both enantiomeric products via fine tuning the hydrogen-bonding interactions of phosphonium salts. Amino acid derived phosphonium salts and dipeptide derived phosphonium salts exhibited different properties for controlling the transition state, which could efficiently promote the Michael addition reaction to give opposite configurations of products with high yields and enantioselectivities. Preliminary investigations on the mechanism of the reaction and applications of the products were also performed.

In this paper we investigate the impact of molecular inhomogeneity on the surface properties of soot particles. Using replica exchange molecular dynamics and solvent-excluded surface analysis, we evaluate detailed surface properties directly from particles containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules of different sizes. The temperature-dependent behaviour of surface roughness and number densities of reactive sites are evaluated for particles from 1–5 nm in diameter. The percentage of carbon atoms and zig-zag sites on the particle surface are found to be independent of molecular composition, while molecule heterogeneity influences the accessible hydrogen atoms and free-edge sites. These relationships allow the prediction of surface composition for a given particle diameter. The surface densities of carbon and hydrogen atoms are explained by the morphological changes and molecule size contributions for solid-like and liquid-like configurations. Small molecules contribute significantly to the particle surface properties at low temperatures, regardless of the proportion of molecule sizes, which results in an increased density of accessible carbon atoms for heterogeneous particles. Interestingly, the surface density of edge carbon atoms and free-edge sites can be predicted from the average molecule size alone. The density of hydrogen atoms on the surface follows the average expected values from the constituent molecule sizes, suggesting that for particles containing many different molecule sizes the α parameter corresponding to the HACA mechanism converges to a linear temperature-dependent trend. This quantitative evaluation of the accessibility of reactive sites for heterogeneous particles provides important information for understanding soot particle growth and oxidation.

Soot particles from flames were found to have quantum confinement behavior in recent UV–visible absorption measurements. However, the impact of surface functionalization was not considered in the previous interpretation. In this work, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) clusters was selected as a model system of soot to explore the impact of surface functionalization on the optical properties. The HOMO–LUMO gap of PAH clusters with formyl group (–CHO) substitutions was computed using the B3LYP method with the 6-31G(d) basis set. The results showed that the HOMO–LUMO gaps of PAH clusters strongly depend on the surface coverage of –CHO groups on particle, and a higher coverage always yield a reduced gap value. Combining the observation from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, the impact of functional groups was computed as 0.27–0.71 eV. Detailed analysis on the electronic structures of HOMO and LUMO reveals that the –CHO groups lower the LUMO energy to a great extent, while they have limited impact on the HOMO energy. Furthermore, we use the LUMO composition as a key descriptor to evaluate the impact of functionalization on LUMO energy, and a theoretical limit of gap reduction was calculated as 1.1 eV for both pyrene and coronene clusters.

The inevitable interfacial defects in the under layer of perovskite films still hinder the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), especially of large-area flexible devices up-scaled by roll-to-roll (R2R) technology. Herein, we demonstrate an in situ bifacial passivation strategy via a simple hydroiodic acid (HI) soaking of NiOx-based hole transport layer during R2R printing. Concretely, the trivalent nickel compound on the film surface is reduced to nickel iodide (NiI2) by a HI redox reaction, thereby optimizing the interface contact and ameliorating the work function. Meanwhile, NiI2 coordinates with lead atoms in the perovskite to form a Pb–I bond, which induces the orderly growth of the perovskite lattice and enhances the quality of the crystalline film. Consequently, the PCE of the optimized flexible devices reaches up to 19.04% (1 cm2) and 16.15% (15 cm2). Moreover, the stability and mechanical property of these devices are also improved. This work provides a deep understanding of the NiOx/perovskite interface and an approach for printable interface optimization.

Trimethyl phosphate (TMP) is a flame-retardant solvent frequently used in nonaqueous electric energy storage devices. Anions can hardly intercalate into a graphite positive electrode from neat TMP at ordinary conditions. In TMP solutions, dissolving lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6), lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4), lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI), and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide) (LiTFSI), by means of increasing lithium salt concentration or increasing the charge cutoff voltage of Li/graphite cells, the TMP-solvated anions can successfully intercalate into graphite positive electrodes. Moreover, the effect of TFSI- activation on a graphite electrode is addressed. Ex situ X-ray diffraction measurements in combination with traditional electrochemical tests are employed to investigate the crystal structure change and electrochemical performance of graphite electrodes, respectively. Nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier-transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopy are employed to characterize the TMP solutions.

Access to clean drinking water is a recognized societal need that touches on the health and livelihood of millions of people worldwide. This is providing an incentive to develop new water-treatment technologies. Traditional technologies, while widespread, are usually inefficient at removing organic pollutants from sewage or so-called grey water. Macrocycle-containing covalent polymer networks have begun to attract attention in the context of water treatment owing to the inherent stability provided by the polymer backbones and their ability to capture micropollutant guests as the result of tunable macrocycle-based host-guest interactions. In this Minireview, we summarize recent advances (from 2016 to mid-2020) involving the removal of organic micropollutants from water using macrocycle-containing covalent polymer networks. An overview of future challenges within this subfield is also provided.

In dual-ion batteries, electrolyte solutions must comply with the positive electrodes of anion graphite intercalation compounds. The solutions of LiPF6 dissolved into ethylmethyl carbonate (EMC) cater to this need. In this paper, the mixtures of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and diethyl carbonate (DEC) are employed in charge of EMC. The storage of PF6- synergistically solvated by both DMC and DEC in graphite has been identified by in/ex situ XRD measurements and conventional electrochemical tests. An optimized electrochemical performance in the solution of LiPF6-DEC/DMC is achieved if the volume ratio of DEC/DMC equals to 4. The solvation states in the LiPF6-DMC/DEC solutions are characterized by IR spectra analysis.

We report a simple procedure to fabricate single crystals 3D C60 having an FCC structure on silicon substrates using a vapour–solid set-up in vacuum conditions. The morphology of the deposited film can be tuned by controlling the temperature and position of the substrate. The as-fabricated samples are extensively characterised by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscope, X-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and nano-indentation, which allow us to shed light on the recrystallization process of the C60. In addition, the growth mechanism of the formation of crystalline 3D structure of the C60 film is discussed in detail. Based on the newly gained knowledge of mechanism and its unique properties, fullerene has shown huge potential as a solid lubricant on various kinds of substrates.

Candle soot has been collected and applied as an active material for Na+-storage anode. The candle soot anode exhibits high reversible capacity and superior rate performance, and this is mainly determined by the pseudocapacitance of Na+ cations. The pre-sodiated candle soot anode is coupled with a graphite cathode using a Na-based organic electrolyte to construct a dual-ion battery. Dual-ion batteries display a wide potential window (0–4.7 V), superior cyclic stability (1400 cycles with the retention of 92.3%), and an outstanding rate capability (111 mAh g−1 at a current density of 2 A g−1).

The titanium carbide (TiC) modified layer is prepared by plasma surface modification technology on the surface of Ti plate (TA1) to meet the performance requirements of bipolar plate of PEMFC. The microstructure characterization confirms that a compact and defectless TiC modified layer is formed on the surface of Ti bipolar plate. The corrosion current density of TiC modified plate in simulated PEMFC environment is reduced by approximately an order of magnitude and the self-corrosion potential is significantly improved compared with bare Ti plate. The interfacial contact resistance (ICR) of TiC modified plate (7.5 mΩ cm2, under loading pressure of 140 N) is evidently lower than bare Ti plate (98.1 mΩ cm2). Even after potentiostatic polarization, the ICR of TiC modified plate still remains at satisfactory values. Furthermore, the contact angle of TiC modified plate reaches a higher value of 112°, which is beneficial to the water discharge of PEMFC.

Carbon nanomaterials have flourished for cancer therapy for decades. However, their practical applications on clinical bases still pose a challenge to address the dilemma of metabolism in vivo. In this study, an attempt is made to design a degradable carbon-silica nanocomposite (CSN) with immunoadjuvant property, which could undergo an enzyme-free degradation process into small particles (∼5 nm) and facilitate its clinical application. CSN harbors photothermal and photodynamic properties and as an immunoadjuvant would help to generate tumor-associated antigens and mature dendritic cells (DCs). Potent antitumor effects have been achieved in both 4T1 and patient-derived xenograft tumor models with tumor inhibition efficiencies of 93.2% and 92.5%, respectively. We believe that this strategy will benefit the possible clinical translation and carbon-silica-nanomaterial-based cancer therapy.

The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) continues to be an attractive alternative for producing a broad range of fuels and chemicals through the conversion of syngas (H2 and CO), which can be derived from various sources, such as coal, natural gas, and biomass. Among iron carbides, Fe2C, as an active phase, has barely been studied due to its thermodynamic instability. Here, we fabricated a series of Fe2C embedded in hollow carbon sphere (HCS) catalysts. By varying the crystallization time, the shell thickness of the HCS was manipulated, which significantly influenced the catalytic performance in the FTS. To investigate the relationship between the geometric structure of the HCS and the physic-chemical properties of Fe species, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, N2 physical adsorption, X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction, Raman spectroscopy, and Mossbauer spectroscopy techniques were employed to characterize the catalysts before and after the reaction. Evidently, a suitable thickness of the carbon layer was beneficial for enhancing the catalytic activity in the FTS due to its high porosity, appropriate electronic environment, and relatively high Fe2C content.

Since the discovery of the DNA Strand Displacement mechanism, researchers have implemented a lot of applications, such as DNA computing, DNA Circuits, Logic gates, and Chemical Reaction network. To achieve those functions, a well-designed system is essential, among which the toehold domains and migration domains play a vital role. In this paper, we designed three basic logic gates based on the toehold mediates DNA strand displacement mechanism, and utilized them to struct a three-layer multiplexer DNA logic circuit. However, the traditional INHIBIT gate annihilated all the inputs strands which obscure the multiplexer in further applications. Therefore, we improved the INHIBIT gate, so the desired input strand can be selected, and the corresponding output strand can be identified. Lastly, we adjusted the multiplexer and realized a cyclic DNA circuit. The simulation results verified the efficiency and reliability of our multiplexer DNA logic circuits. Our method has the ability in architecting complex DNA integrated circuits.
