The Everglades Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs) are a complex of large constructed wetlands that are an integral component of the State and Federal efforts to restore the Everglades ecosystem. The overall objective of this study was to determine the accumulation rates of macro‐elements including carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), and associated secondary elements including calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), aluminum (Al), and iron (Fe) in two Everglades STAs over their periods of operation. The study was conducted in STA‐2 with parallel flow‐ways consisting of emergent aquatic vegetation (EAV) and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) and the Western flow‐way of STA‐3/4 with EAV and SAV cells operated in series. Elemental accumulation rates were determined in the unconsolidated surficial sediments (floc) and recently accreted soil (RAS) that have accumulated on top of the antecedent soil over the 14‐ and 10‐yr periods of operation for STA‐2 and STA‐3/4, respectively. Flow‐ways with SAV were more efficient than EAV in accreting mineral matter, resulting in increased bulk density and higher accumulation rates of elements. Average C accumulation in the floc and RAS of SAV flow‐ways was 320 g·m−2·yr−1 with approximately equal proportions of inorganic and organic C, while in the EAV flow‐ways accumulation rates of C ranged from 116 to 147 g·m−2·yr−1 with mostly organic C. Phosphorus accumulation rates were approximately 2–3 times higher in SAV than in EAV flow‐ways. Differences in accumulation of elements between SAV and EAV were largest for Ca with 17–42 times more Ca in SAV than EAV systems. This suggests that in the SAV systems, possible occlusion of macro‐elements and metals during CaCO3 precipitation facilitated accretion of material with high mineral content. In EAV, biomass turnover and associated biotic processes regulated organic matter accumulation rates. The spatial accumulation patterns of P, C, and N in the EAV areas of STA‐2 and STA‐3/4 were similar to those observed in the EAV areas of the natural wetlands in Water Conservation Areas, suggesting that constructed wetland systems function similarly to natural wetlands dominated by EAV areas in retaining and storing macro‐ and secondary elements.

Lake carbon burial is of vital significance in global carbon cycle and carbon budget, particularly in the large deepwater lakes. However, carbon burial in large deepwater lakes is hard to estimate due to the difficulty in obtaining high spatial-resolution samples. In this study, we investigated distributions of total organic carbon (TOC) and inorganic carbon (TIC), two main carbon components in lake sediments, based on dozens of surficial sedimentary samples (n= 26) covering whole Lake Qinghai, the largest saline lake in China. The results showed that the TOC content, with a range of 1.4–4.8%, was significantly higher in the lake area near the northern lakeshore where human activities are concentrated and lower in the lake areas near the Buha River mouth and the eastern lake area. In contrast, the TIC content, ranging from 1.5 to 3.8%, increased from the northwestern and southeastern lake areas toward the lake center, and mainly depended on hydro-chemical and hydraulic characteristics. The inorganic carbon burial (47.77 ± 19.73 Gg C yr−1) was approximately equal to organic carbon burial (47.50 ± 22.68 Gg C yr−1) and accounted for about 50% of the total carbon burial (95.27 ± 37.74 Gg C yr−1), suggesting that saline lakes constitute a large inorganic carbon pool in addition to an organic carbon pool. Because of saline water body type in arid and semiarid regions and alpine Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, lakes in these regions have huge inorganic carbon burial potential and important contributions to the global carbon budget.

The climatologies should adequately capture seasonal variability to properly address ocean acidification and similar issues related to the carbon cycle. Total alkalinity (AT) is one variable of the seawater CO2 chemistry system involved in ocean acidification and frequently measured.We used the Global Ocean Data Analysis Project version 2.2019 (GLODAPv2) to extract relationships among the drivers of the AT variability and AT concentration using a neural network (NNGv2) to generate a monthly climatology. The GLODAPv2 qualitycontrolled dataset used was modeled by the NNGv2 with a root-mean-squared error (RMSE) of 5.3 μmol kg1. Validation tests with independent datasets revealed the good generalization of the network. Data from five ocean time-series stations showed an acceptable RMSE range of 3–6.2 μmol kg1. Successful modeling of the monthly AT variability in the time series suggests that the NNGv2 is a good candidate to generate a monthly climatology. The climatological fields of AT were obtained passing through the NNGv2 the World Ocean Atlas 2013 (WOA13) monthly climatologies of temperature, salinity, and oxygen and the computed climatologies of nutrients from the previous ones with a neural network. The spatiotemporal resolution is set by WOA13: 1 1 in the horizontal, 102 depth levels (0–5500 m) in the vertical and monthly (0–1500 m) to annual (1550–5500 m) temporal resolution. The seasonal variability of the carbonate system in the eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMed) was investigated based on discrete total alkalinity (AT), total dissolved inorganic carbon (CT), and pH measurements collected during three cruises around Crete between June 2018 and March 2019. This study presents a detailed description of this new carbonate chemistry dataset in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. We show that the North Western Levantine Basin (NWLB) is unique in terms of range of AT variation vs. CT variation in the upper water column over an annual cycle. The reasons for this singularity of the NWLB can be explained by the interplay between strong evaporation and the concomitant consumption of CT by autotrophic processes. The high range of AT variations, combined to temperature changes, has a strong impact on the variability of the seawater pCO2 (pCO2SW). Based on Argo float data, an entire annual cycle for pCO2SW in the NWLB has been reconstructed in order to estimate the temporal sequence of the potential “source” and “sink” of atmospheric CO2. By combining this dataset with previous observations in the NWLB, this study shows a significant ocean acidification and a decrease in the oceanic surface pHT25 of −0.0024 ± 0.0004 pHT25 units.a–1. The changes in the carbonate system are driven by the increase of atmospheric CO2 but also by unexplained temporal changes in the surface AT content. If we consider that the EMed will, in the future, encounter longer, more intense and warmer summer seasons, this study proposes some perspectives on the carbonate system functioning of the “future” EMed.

To explore the mechanisms that mineralize poorly bioavailable natural organic carbon (OC), we measured the mineralization of OC in two lake waters over long-term experiments (up to 623 days) at different pH and iron (Fe) levels. Both the microbial and photochemical mineralization of OC was higher at pH acidified to 4 than at the ambient pH 5 or an elevated pH 6. During 244 days, microbes mineralized up to 60% of OC in the 10-mu m filtrates of lake water and more than 27% in the 1-mu m filtrates indicating that large-sized microbes/grazers enhance the mineralization of OC. A reactivity continuum model indicated that the acidification stimulated the microbial mineralization of OC especially in the later (> weeks) phases of experiment when the bioavailability of OC was poor. The reactive oxygen species produced by light or microbial metabolism could have contributed to the mineralization of poorly bioavailable OC through photochemical and biogenic Fenton processes catalyzed by the indigenous Fe in lake water. When Fe was introduced to artificial lake water to the concentration found in the study lakes, it increased the densities of bacteria growing on solid phase extracted dissolved organic matter and in a larger extent at low pH 4 than at pH 5. Our results suggest that in addition to the photochemical Fenton process (photo-Fenton), microbes can transfer poorly bioavailable OC into labile forms and CO2 through extracellular Fe-catalyzed reactions (i.e., biogenic Fenton process). This study illustrated the growth of Scenedesmus obliquus and recycle of nutrients in wastewater combined with inorganic carbon under autotrophic conditions. Scenedesmus obliquus was cultivated under different conditions by adding sodium carbonate (Na 2 CO 3 ) at 15–40 mg l −1 separately in wastewater containing high nitrogen and phosphorus content. The growth characteristics of S. obliquus , pH and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) changes of microalgae liquid, the recycle rate of ammonia and phosphorus and lipid content were determined. The changes of pH and DIC showed that S. obliquus could use Na 2 CO 3 to grow, with lipid contents of 18–25%. Among all Na 2 CO 3 concentrations, 20 mg l −1 was the optimum, of which S. obliquus had the highest NH 3 -N recycle of 52% and P O 4 3 – P recycle of 67%. By the 14th day, its biomass production also reaches the maximum of 0.21 g l −1 . However, inorganic carbon fixation rate was inversely proportional to its concentration. Moreover, the biomass was in positive correlation with the Na 2 CO 3 concentration except 20 mg l −1 , which provided a possibility that S. obliquus could be acclimatized to adjust to high concentrations of inorganic carbon to promote biomass accumulation and recycle of nutrients.

The anammox process is an energy efficient promising alternative to biologically remove the nitrogen. Thus, a 5-L anammox granular reactor was inoculated with sludge coming from a sidestream partial nitritation and anammox reactor (>200 mg TN/L and 30 °C) and it was directly subjected to 15 ± 1 °C treating mimicked municipal wastewater (50 mg TN/L). Results indicated that an acclimation period (commonly used) to progressive reach the mainstream conditions is not needed, shortening the start-up periods. The long-term anammox process stability was proved to treat synthetic wastewater with decreasing alkalinities and nitritified primary settled municipal wastewater. The low pH values (6.2 ± 0.1) of the municipal wastewater fed did not affect the process stability. Residual organic matter concentrations augmented the nitrogen removal efficiency from 80 % (with the synthetic medium) to 92 % achieving effluent concentrations below 10 mg TN/L. Finally, the effect of pH (6–8), temperature (15–30 °C) and organic matter concentration (0–75 mg TOC/L) over the specific anammox activity (SAAMX) was evaluated at short-term. pH and temperature and their interactions exerted significant influence on the SAAMX value while the TOC concentrations itself did not significantly change the SAAMX This work was done within the Pioneer_STP (ID 199(UE)/PCIN-2015-022(AEI)) project funded by the WaterWorks2014 Cofunded Call (Water JPI/Horizon 2020). Graphical abstract, While traditional laboratory methods of determining soil organic carbon (SOC) content are generally simple, this becomes more challenging when carbonates are present in the soil; such is commonly found in semi-arid areas. Additionally, soil inorganic carbon (SIC) content itself is difficult to determine. This study uses visible near infrared (VisNIR) spectra to predict SOC and SIC contents of samples, and the impact of including soil pH and soil total carbon (STC) data as predictor variables was evaluated. The results indicated that combining available soil pH and STC content data with VisNIR spectra dramatically improved prediction accuracy of the Cubist models. Using the full suite of predictor variables, Cubist models trained on the calibration dataset (75%) could predict the validation dataset (25%) for SOC content with a Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient (LCCC) of 0.94, and an LCCC of 0.83 for SIC content. This is compared to an LCCC of 0.81 and 0.35 for SOC and SIC content, respectively, when no ancillary soil data was included with VisNIR spectra as predictor variables. These results suggest that there may be promise for using other readily available soil data in combination with VisNIR spectra to improve the predictions of different soil properties. • It can be laborious and expensive to measure soil organic and inorganic carbon content with traditional laboratory methods, and there has been recent focus on using spectroscopic techniques to overcome this. • This study demonstrates that combining ancillary soil data (pH and total carbon content) with these spectroscopic techniques can considerably improve predictions of SOC and SIC content.

International audience; The effect of an invasive infaunal suspension-feeding bivalve, the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum, on benthic inorganic carbon and nutrient fluxes was examined through in situ incubations. Measurements were performed in spring and summer on a tidal sandflat of the Rance estuary (south part of the Western English Channel) colonized by the Manila clam after its deliberate introduction in the 1990's. Benthic inorganic carbon fluxes were measured using light and dark benthic chambers both at emersion and immersion. Benthic nutrient fluxes were measured using dark benthic chambers at immersion. Inorganic carbon (IC) and ammonium sediment release under darkness at immersion reached 5.60 mmol m-2 h-1 and 441 μmol m-2 h-1 respectively for a clam density of 291 ind m-2. The sediment IC-release under darkness was lower during emersion than during immersion, probably due to the reduced activity of infauna at low tide. Under ambient light, a sediment IC-uptake was systematically measured at emersion, indicating a net autotrophy under the condition of measurements (125 < surface PAR < 1670 μmol m-2 s-1), while either sediment IC-uptake or release was measured at immersion according to light variation (20 < underwater PAR < 990 μmol m-2 s-1). The highest gross community primary production, calculated from highest IC-fluxes at light (i.e. net community production) and highest IC-fluxes at dark (i.e. community respiration), was similar at emersion and immersion and reached 6.2 mmolC m-2 h-1. These results suggest that the metabolic activity of the invasive Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum contributes to increase inorganic C and ammonium sediment release. These regenerated nutrients may support microphytobenthic production which appeared particularly high on this intertidal sand flat.

Most studies of carbonate bedrock weathering have focused on the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) flux while dismissing particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) as insignificant. However, under certain flow conditions PIC flux may be an important term in carbonate weathering. In this study, the total inorganic carbon (TIC) flux was calculated in a fluviokarst basin. Water samples and in situ data loggers were used to determine suspended sediment concentration and water chemistry. The mass of PIC within suspended sediments was quantified by cation/anion analysis of dual filtered/unfiltered samples. The flux of bed load material was calculated via stream power calculations. The analysis of recorded storm events indicated that PIC flux is moderate but can be significant during peak storm discharges. A small storm with a 0.87-month return period produced a PIC flux of 14 g s&minus, 1 and a DIC flux of 150 g s&minus, 1 at 1.4 m3 s&minus, 1 discharge. The largest storm had a return period of 7.7 months, a peak discharge of 4.6 m3 s&minus, 1, and peak PIC flux of 620 g s&minus, 1 compared to a peak DIC flux of 350 g s&minus, 1. During storm events, bed load was the most significant component of the total PIC flux, exceeding the suspended load flux by an order of magnitude. When calculated on an annual basis, the data show that PIC contributes about 10 percent to total inorganic carbon removal.

Few estuaries have inorganic carbon datasets with sufficient spatial and temporal coverage for identifying acidification baselines, seasonal cycles and trends. The Chesapeake Bay, though one of the most well-studied estuarine systems in the world, is no exception. To date, there have only been observational studies of inorganic carbon distribution and flux in lower bay sub-estuaries. Here, we address this knowledge gap with results from the first complete observational study of inorganic carbon along the main stem. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) increased from surface to bottom and north to south over the course of 2016, mainly driven by seasonal changes in river discharge, mixing, and biological carbon dioxide (CO2) removal at the surface and release in the subsurface. Upper, mid- and lower bay DIC and TA ranged from 1000–1300, 1300–1800, and 1700–1900 μmol kg-1, respectively. The pH range was large, with maximum values of 8.5 at the surface and minimums as low as 7.1 in bottom water in the upper and mid-bay. Seasonally, the upper bay was the most variable for DIC and TA, but pH was more variable in the mid-bay. Our results reveal that low pH is a continuing concern, despite reductions in nutrient inputs. There was active internal recycling of DIC and TA, with a large inorganic carbon removal in the upper bay and at salinities < 5 most months, and a large addition in the mid-salinities. In spring and summer, waters with salinities between 10 and 15 were a large source of DIC, likely due to remineralization of organic matter and dissolution of CaCO3. We estimate that the estuarine export flux of DIC and TA in 2016 was 40.3 ± 8.2 × 109 mol yr-1 and 47.1 ± 8.6 × 109 mol yr-1. The estuary was likely a large sink of DIC, and possibly a weak source of TA. These results support the argument that the Chesapeake Bay may be an exception to the long-standing assumption that estuaries are heterotrophic. Furthermore, they underline the importance of large estuarine systems for mitigating acidification in coastal ecosystems, since riverine chemistry is substantially modified within the estuary.

Stemflow can be an important pathway for the drainage of precipitation and related solutes through tree canopies to forest soils. As stemflow must drain along bark surfaces, the effects of bark structure on stemflow chemical composition is merited. This study examines the relationship between stemflow chemistry and bark surface structure for six species of varying bark morphology (four deciduous broadleaf trees and two evergreen coniferous trees) at a montane and an urban site in Japan. Stemflow from smooth-barked species contained greater concentrations of solutes that appear to be rinsed from the stem surface (i.e., sea salt aerosols); while, rougher-barked tree species contained greater or less concentrations of solutes that appear to be leached (e.g., Ca2+) or taken-up (e.g., inorganic N) by the bark, respectively. Site-specific atmospheric environments also influenced thee bark-stemflow chemistry relationships—where the greater elemental deposition in the urban plot generally resulted in greater stemflow chemistry than observed in the lower-deposition montane plot. Our results therefore suggest that the dynamics of dry deposition wash-off by stemflow, and the exchange of dissolved solutes between stemflow and the bark surface, are influenced by the surface structure of the bark and the site’s atmospheric environment. Therefore, the interactions between bark surface structure and its surrounding atmospheric environment are important factors in the stemflow-related elemental cycling between the tree and precipitation.

The most massive and fast-eroding thaw slump of the Northern Hemisphere located in the Yana Uplands of Northern Yakutia was investigated to assess in detail the cryogenic inventory and carbon pools of two distinctive Ice Complex stratigraphic units and the uppermost cover deposits. Differentiating into modern and Holocene near-surface layers (active layer and shielding layer), highest total carbon contents were found in the active layer (18.72 kg m&minus, 2), while the shielding layer yielded a much lower carbon content of 1.81 kg m&minus, 2. The late Pleistocene upper Ice Complex contained 10.34 kg m&minus, 2 total carbon, and the mid-Pleistocene lower Ice Complex 17.66 kg m&minus, 2. The proportion of organic carbon from total carbon content is well above 70% in all studied units with 94% in the active layer, 73% in the shielding layer, 83% in the upper Ice Complex and 79% in the lower Ice Complex. Inorganic carbon is low in the overall structure of the deposits.

The aim of this study was to investigate the PHB and glycogen accumulation dynamics in two photobioreactors inoculated with different monocultures of wastewater-borne cyanobacteria, using a three-stage feeding strategy (growth phase, feast-famine phase and feast phase). Two cyanobacterial monocultures containing members of Synechocystis sp. or Synechococcus sp. were collected from treated wastewater and inoculated in lab-scale photobioreactors to evaluate the PHB and glycogen accumulation. A third photobioreactor with a complex microbial community grown in real wastewater was also set up. During each experimental phase different concentrations of inorganic carbon were applied to the cultures, these shifts allowed to discern the accumulation mechanism of carbon storage polymers (PHB and glycogen) in cyanobacteria. Conversion of one into the other was directly related to the carbon content. The highest PHB and glycogen contents (5.04%dcw and 69%dcw, respectively) were achieved for Synechocystis sp.

The Rhône River is the largest source of terrestrial organic and inorganic carbon for the Mediterranean Sea. A large fraction of this terrestrial carbon is either buried or mineralized in the sediments close to the river mouth. This mineralization follows aerobic and anaerobic pathways, with a range of impacts on calcium carbonate precipitation and dissolution in the sediment near the sediment–water interface. This study focuses on the production of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) by early diagenesis, consequential pH variations and the effect on calcium carbonate precipitation or dissolution. The sediment porewater chemistry was investigated along a transect from the Rhône River outlet to the continental shelf. TA and concentrations of DIC, SO42− and Ca2+ were analyzed on bottom waters and extracted sediment porewaters, whereas pH and oxygen concentrations were measured in situ using microelectrodes. The average oxygen penetration depth into the sediment was 1.7 ± 0.4 mm close to the river mouth and 8.2 ± 2.6 mm in the continental shelf sediments, indicating intense respiration rates. Diffusive oxygen fluxes through the sediment–water interface ranged between 3 and 13 mmol O2 m−2 d−1. In the first 30 cm of the sediment, TA and DIC porewater concentrations increased with depth up to 48 mmol L−1 near the river outlet and up to 7 mmol L−1 on the shelf as a result of aerobic and anaerobic mineralization processes. Due to aerobic processes, at all stations pH decreased by 0.6 pH units in the oxic layer of the sediment accompanied by a decrease of the saturation state regarding calcium carbonate. In the anoxic layer of the sediments, sulfate reduction was the dominant mineralization process and was associated with an increase of porewater saturation state regarding calcium carbonate. Ultimately anoxic mineralization of organic matter caused calcium carbonate precipitation demonstrated by a large decrease in Ca2+ concentration with depth in the sediment. Carbonate precipitation decreased in the offshore direction, together with the carbon turnover and sulfate consumption in the sediments. The large production of porewater alkalinity characterizes these sediments as an alkalinity source to the water column, which may increase the CO2 buffering capacity of these coastal waters. Estuarine sediments should therefore receive more attention in future estimations of global carbon fluxes.

Soil carbon (C) in three Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba L.) agroforestry systems, afforestation (Ginkgo alone, G), and an agricultural cropping system were compared over a five-year period. The agroforestry systems were Ginkgo + Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) + Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L., GWP), Ginkgo + Mulberry (Morus alba L., GM), and Ginkgo + Rapa (Brassica napus L.) + Peanut (GRP). The agricultural system consisted of wheat and peanut (WP). Total soil carbon (TSC), soil organic (SOC) and inorganic carbon (SIC), and the pools of five SOC chemical fractions were measured. TSC and SOC were always lower under WP than the G-based planting systems, and TSC in the latter increased significantly across years in the top 20 cm. Stocks of SIC under WP were significantly greater than the G-based systems, whereas SOC fractions tended to be lower. Most fractions increased across years but not in WP.

Geothermal water samples taken from deep aquifers within the city of Kaifeng at depths between 800 and 1650 m were analyzed for conventional water chemical compositions and stable isotopes. These results were then combined with the deuterium excess parameter (d value), and the contribution ratios of different carbon sources were calculated along with distributional characteristics and data on the migration and transformation of geothermal water. These results included the conventional water chemical group, hydrogen, and oxygen isotopes (δD-δ18O), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and associated isotopes (δ13CDIC). The results of this study show that geothermal water in the city of Kaifeng is weakly alkaline, water chemistry mostly comprises a HCO3-Na type, and the range of variation of δD is between −76.12‰ and −70.48‰, (average: −74.25‰), while the range of variation of δ18O is between −11.08‰ and −9.41‰ (average: −10.15‰). Data show that values of d vary between 1.3‰ and 13.3‰ (average: 6.91‰), while DIC content is between 91.523 and 156.969 mg/L (average: 127.158 mg/L). The recorded range of δ13CDIC was between −10.160‰ and −6.386‰ (average: −9.019‰). The results presented in this study show that as depth increases, so do δD and δ18O, while d values decrease and DIC content and δ13CDIC gradually increase. Thus, δD, δ18O, d values, DIC, and δ13CDIC can all be used as proxies for the burial characteristics of geothermal water. Because data show that the changes in d values and DIC content are larger along the direction of geothermal water flow, so these proxies can be used to indicate migration. This study also shows demonstrates that the main source of DIC in geothermal water is CO2thathas a biological origin in soils, as well as the dissolution of carbonate minerals in surrounding rocks. Thus, as depth increases, the contribution of soil biogenic carbon sources to DIC decreases while the influence of carbonate dissolution on DIC increases.

International audience; Sequestration of atmospheric carbon (C) into soils is a strategy to compensate for anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide. The response of SOCs to crop types is yet to be determined under different environments. The objectives of this study were to elucidate the impact of crop type on the allocation of atmospheric C to shoots and roots, and ultimately to the soils and to determine its association with soil carbon stocks. Three hundred and eighty-nine field trials were compared to determine allocation of biomass and C in plants and SOCs under fields of different crop types. Grasses had the highest plant biomass production (19.80 ± 1.16 Mg ha−1 yr−1), followed by cereals (9.44 ± 0.45 Mg ha−1 yr−1), fibre (7.90 ± 1.00 Mg ha−1 yr−1), legumes (3.29 ± 0.63 Mg ha−1 yr−1), and oil crops (3.05 ± 1.16 Mg ha−1 yr−1) showing significant differences (p < 0.05). Maize (6.3 ± 0.34 Mg C ha−1 yr−1) had the highest plant C amongst summer crops, while wheat (2.2 ± 0.35 Mg C ha−1 yr−1) had the highest plant C amongst winter crops. In all the studies, crops allocated more C to their shoots than roots yielding root C: shoot C (Rc/Sc) ratios below magnitude. The greatest C allocation to roots was in grasses (Rc/Sc = 1.19 ± 0.08), followed by cereals (0.95 ± 0.03), legumes (0.86 ± 0.04), oil crops (0.85 ± 0.08), and fibre crops (0.50 ± 0.07). There was evidence that high plant C stocks were found in crops grown under carbon rich clayey soils of tropical humid areas. Natural grasses and cereals should be promoted as they appeared to yield greater potential for atmospheric carbon sequestration in plants and soils. Overall, the study evaluated the relative potential of the main crop types to sequester atmospheric C useful in screening of crop types for carbon efficiency and for development of plant C models.

The polar oceans are particularly vulnerable to ocean acidification; the lowering of seawater pH and carbonate mineral saturation states due to uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). High spatial variability in surface water pH and saturation states (Omega) for two biologically-important calcium carbonate minerals calcite and aragonite was observed in Ryder Bay, in the coastal sea-ice zone of the West Antarctic Peninsula. Glacial meltwater and melting sea ice stratified the water column and facilitated the development of large phytoplankton blooms and subsequent strong uptake of atmospheric CO2 of up to 55 mmol m(-2) day(-1) during austral summer. Concurrent high pH (8.48) and calcium carbonate mineral supersaturation (Omega aragonite similar to 3.1) occurred in the meltwater-influenced surface ocean. Biologically-induced increases in calcium carbonate mineral saturation states counteracted any effects of carbonate ion dilution. Accumulation of CO2 through remineralisation of additional organic matter from productive coastal waters lowered the pH (7.84) and caused deep-water corrosivity (Omega aragonite similar to 0.9) in regions impacted by Circumpolar Deep Water. Episodic mixing events enabled CO2-rich subsurface water to become entrained into the surface and eroded seasonal stratification to lower surface water pH (8.21) and saturation states (Omega aragonite similar to 1.8) relative to all surface waters across Ryder Bay. Uptake of atmospheric CO2 of 28 mmol m(-2) day(-1) in regions of vertical mixing may enhance the susceptibility of the surface layer to future ocean acidification in dynamic coastal environments. Spatially-resolved studies are essential to elucidate the natural variability in carbonate chemistry in order to better understand and predict carbon cycling and the response of marine organisms to future ocean acidification in the Antarctic coastal zone.

Article, Short-term experiments indicate that seawater acidification can cause a decrease in the rate of calcification by coccolithopores, but the relationship between carbonate chemistry and coccolithophore calcification rate in natural assemblages is still unclear. During the Malaspina 2010 circumnavigation, we measured primary production, calcificatiion, coccolithophore abundance, particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) concentration, and the parameters of the carbonate system, along basin-scale transects in the tropical Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. Euphotic layer-integrated calcification and mean cell-specific calcification to primary production (CP/PP) ratio was relatively invariant among ocean basins, with an overall mean value of 0.05+-0.04. Extrapoling this value to the entire ocean would result in a global pelagic calcification rate of 2.4 PtC /year. The mean PIC concentration in surface waters was 1.8 +-1.6 mgC/m3 and its turnover time averaged 20 d. We combined our data of calcification, primary production, and carbonate chemistry from Malaspina 2010 with those obtained during two previous cruises in the northern Arabian Sea. Both the CP/PP ratio and cell-specific calcification were largely constant across a wide range of calcite saturation rate (1.5-6.5), [HCO3-]/[H+] (0.08-0.24; mol:umol), and pH (7.6-8.1), which indicates that calcification by natural coccolithophore assemblages was independent of carbonate chemistry. Our results suggest that coccolithophore calcification, at least in tropical regions, may not be decreasing in the currently acidifying ocean.

Total alkalinity (AT) and dissolved inorganic carbon (CT) were sampled across the Rockall Trough in Feb 2009 (CE0903) and Feb 2010 (CE10002) as part of a baseline study of inorganic carbon chemistry in Irish shelf waters. The results have been compared with data from WOCE surveys A01E (Sept 1991), A01 (Dec 1994), AR24 (Nov 1996) and A24 (June 1997). The 2009 and 2010 datasets provide a snapshot of the biogeochemical parameters which can act as a baseline of inorganic carbon and acidity levels in surface waters of the Rockall Trough in late winter for future comparison since previous surveys in the area have been affected by biological activity. The dataset also offers the possibility to compare decadal changes in subsurface waters. The temporal evolution of anthropogenic carbon (D Cant) between the 1990s and 2010 was evaluated using two separate methods; (i) a comparison of the concentrations of CT between surveys, after correcting it for remineralisation of organic material and formation and dissolution of calcium carbonate (D CT-abio) and (ii) an extended Multiple Linear Regression was used to calculate the D Cant (D Cant eMLR). There was an increase in D CT-abio and D Cant eMLR of 1874 umol kg1 and1974 umol kg1, respectively, in the subsurface waters between 1991 and 2010, equivalent to a decrease of 0.0407± 0.003 pH units over the 19 year period. There was an increasein both D CT-abio and D Cant eMLR of 874 umol kg1 in Labrador Sea Water (LSW) in the Trough between 1991 and 2010, and LSW has acidified by 0.0297±0.002 pH units over the same time period. A reduction in calcite and aragonite saturation states was observed, which may have implications for calcifying organisms in the region.

In large-scale microalgal production in tubular photobioreactors, the build-up of O(2) along the tubes is one of the major bottlenecks to obtain high productivities. Oxygen inhibits the growth, since it competes with carbon dioxide for the Rubisco enzyme involved in the CO(2) fixation to generate biomass. The effect of oxygen on growth of Nannochloropsis sp. was experimentally determined in a fully controlled flat-panel photobioreactor operated in turbidostat mode using an incident photon flux density of 100 μmol photons m(-2) s(-1) and with only the oxygen concentration as variable parameter. The dissolved oxygen concentration was varied from 20 to 250% air saturation. Results showed that there was no clear effect of oxygen concentration on specific growth rate (mean of 0.48 ± 0.40 day(-1)) upon increasing the oxygen concentration from 20% to 75% air saturation. Upon further increasing the oxygen concentration, however, a linear decrease in specific growth rate was observed, ranging from 0.48 ± 0.40 day(-1) at a dissolved oxygen concentration of 75% air saturation to 0.18 ± 0.01 day(-1) at 250% air saturation. In vitro data on isolated Rubisco were used to predict the quantum yield at different oxygen concentrations in the medium. The predicted decrease in quantum yield matches well with the observed decrease that was measured in vivo. These results indicate that the effect of oxygen on growth of Nannochloropsis sp. at low light intensity is only due to competitive inhibition of the Rubisco enzyme. At these sub-saturating light conditions, the presence of high concentrations of oxygen in the medium induced slightly higher carotenoid content, but the increased levels of this protective antioxidant did not diminish the growth-inhibiting effects of oxygen on the Rubisco.

The distribution (fine resolution depth profiles) of major nutrients, chlorophyll-a, organic compounds, and phytoplankton (biomass and numbers) was examined in lead water in pack ice of the Weddell Sea. Samples were taken by pulling water into a syringe from a series of depths from 0.002 to 4m. While concentrations of compounds of interest remained constant in the water column, an enhanced depletion of nutrients (ammonium, nitrate, silicate, and inorganic carbon) occurred above the pycnocline at 0.1 m. Coinciding with this depletion was an increase of organic matter and chlorophyll. The change in carbon isotopic composition showed that an enhanced primary production occurred at the sea surface. Cell counts and nutrient disappearance ratios suggest that primary production was dominated by diatoms. Depletions of total CO2, nitrate, phosphate and silicate in the surface layer were calculated for cruise ANT XXII/3 with FS Polarstern in March 2005 for estimating the annual net community production. East-west across the Weddell Sea the variation of all depletions is similar, but this holds to a lesser extent for silicate. Depletions in March 2005 are 2-3 times larger than those in January 1993 for the same transect. Very low N:P and C:P depletion ratios seem to point to dominance of diatoms, in the central Weddell Sea more than in the margin. Estimates of annual net community productions are about 1.8 and 3.5 mol C m(-2) year(-1) for the interior Weddell Sea and a near-margin region, respectively. The region does not comply with the classical view of a marginal ice zone with high productivity. Net community production is similar to annual export production, implying that remineralization in the ensuing winter be minor.

The effect of inorganic carbon on ozone self-decomposition was examined in this study. Experiments were carried out under a wide concentration range of inorganic carbon of 0–30 mgC/L. First, the rate constant in the overall description model with nth order reaction on dissolved ozone was evaluated. A clear difference in the rate constants with and without inorganic carbon was observed even when the concentration of inorganic carbon was as low as 3 mgC/L; the difference with and without inorganic carbon was almost one order of magnitude. Reaction rate constant was lower with an increase of inorganic carbon concentration. The reaction rate constants were in the range from 1.4 × 10−5–1.9 × 10−4 (mg/L)−1sec.−1 under pH of 6.8–8.1 and inorganic carbon concentration of 6–30 mgC/L and converged on the order of 1.0 × 10−4 (mg/L)−1sec.−1. The estuarine mixing zone of the Tana River (northern Kenya) and an extensive deltaic area just south of the estuary were sampled in April 2004 with the aim of identifying the distribution, sources, and processing of particulate and dissolved organic carbon (POC, DOC) and inorganic carbon (DIC). C4 inputs from the catchment contributed similar to 50% to the POC pool in the Tana River and estuary, and in the mangrove creek water column and intertidal sediments. The delta C-13 values of DOC, however, were typically much more negative than that of POC, indicating a substantially higher contribution by C3 and/or mangrove-derived carbon in the DOC pool. The undersaturation of O-2, high pCO(2), and the nonconservative nature of DIC and delta C-13(DIC) suggest a strongly heterotrophic water column, particularly in the freshwater part of the Tana and in the tidal creeks in the delta, where high additional inputs of organic matter were observed. However, some of these sites showed delta O-18(DO) signatures lower than the atmospheric equilibrium (i.e., +24.2%(0)) indicative of significant O-2 production by photosynthesis. Therefore, the heterotrophic signature in the water column is likely the result of a strong interaction with the large intertidal areas, whereby respiratory activity in sediments and in the overlying water column during tidal inundation leave a marked signature on the water column. This is confirmed by the covariation between salinity-normalized total alkalinity and DIC, whose slope indicates an important role for anaerobic diagenetic processes. International audience; We examined phytoplankton community responses to natural iron fertilisation at 32 sites over and downstream from the Kerguelen Plateau in the Southern Ocean during the austral spring bloom in October-November 2011. The community structure was estimated from chemical and isotopic measurements (particulate organic carbon - POC; 13C-POC; particulate nitrogen - PN; 15N-PN; and biogenic silica - BSi) on size-fractionated samples from surface waters (300, 210, 50, 20, 5, and 1 μm fractions). Higher values of 13C-POC (vs. co-located 13C values for dissolved inorganic carbon - DIC) were taken as indicative of faster growth rates and higher values of 15N-PN (vs. co-located 15N-NO3 source values) as indicative of greater nitrate use (rather than ammonium use, i.e. higher f ratios). Community responses varied in relation to both regional circulation and the advance of the bloom. Iron-fertilised waters over the plateau developed dominance by very large diatoms (50-210 μm) with high BSi / POC ratios, high growth rates, and significant ammonium recycling (lower f ratios) as biomass built up. In contrast, downstream polar frontal waters with a similar or higher iron supply were dominated by smaller diatoms (20-50 μm) and exhibited greater ammonium recycling. Stations in a deep-water bathymetrically trapped recirculation south of the polar front with lower iron levels showed the large-cell dominance observed on the plateau but much less biomass. Comparison of these communities to surface water nitrate (and silicate) depletions as a proxy for export shows that the low-biomass recirculation feature had exported similar amounts of nitrogen to the high-biomass blooms over the plateau and north of the polar front. This suggests that early spring trophodynamic and export responses differed between regions with persistent low levels vs. intermittent high levels of iron fertilisation.

The results of an international interlaboratory proficiency test for the determination of carbonic species are presented. Eight laboratories analysed twelve water samples (four synthetic waters, one lake water, four geothermal waters, one seawater and two petroleum waters) by two methods: (a) individual laboratory analytical procedure and (b) acid-base titration curves in tabular form following a standardised protocol. In case (b), the concentrations of carbonic species were calculated by the organiser using the (1) Hydrologists' method, (2) Geochemists' method and/or (3) initial pH and total alkalinity method. For synthetic waters, the averaged % trueness and precision of measurement of the two methods were (trueness=7.6, precision=9.4) and (9.0, 3.4) for total alkalinity, and (6.6, 31.0) and (7.8, 6.1) for carbonic alkalinity, respectively. This indicates that the total alkalinity calculation procedure is in general correct in the individual laboratory method, but the carbonic alkalinity calculation procedure has serious problems. The measurements of total alkalinity for lake and seawaters were in agreement in both the methods; however, the individual laboratory measurement method for geothermal and petroleum waters was conceptually incorrect. Thus, the analytical procedures for the determination of carbonic species were reviewed. To apply the Hydrologists' and/or Geochemists' methods, the location of NaHCO3EP and H2CO3EP is necessary, even for samples with pH lower than that of NaHCO3EP, and a backward titration curve after complete removal of CO2 must be performed. The initial pH and total alkalinity method is appropriate where a complete analysis of species that contribute to the alkalinity is known. The authors developed a dynamic model to investigate the effect of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) increase on plant growth in freshwater ecosystems. Steady-state simulations were performed to analyze the response of phytoplankton and submerged macrophytes to atmospheric CO2 elevation from 350 to 700 ppm. The authors studied various conditions that may affect this response, such as alkalinity, the air–water exchange rate of CO2, the community respiration rate, and the phosphorus (P) supply rateWe developed a dynamic model to investigate the effect of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) increase on plant growth in freshwater ecosystems. The increase in atmospheric CO2 could affect submerged plant growth only under relatively eutrophic conditions and at a low community respiration rate. Alkalinity had little effect on the response of the different species. When the air-water exchange was low, the proportional effect of the CO2 increase on plant growth was higher. Under eutrophic conditions, algae and macrophytes using CO2 and HCO3- may double their growth rate due to atmospheric CO2 elevation, while the growth of macrophytes restricted to CO2 assimilation may be threefold. The differences in response of the species under various conditions indicate that the elevation of atmospheric CO2 may induce drastic changes in the productivity and species dominance in freshwater systems.

Short-term effects of increasing pCO(2); 380 ppm (LC) vs. 700 ppm (HC); at different nitrogen levels; 5 mu M nitrate (LN) vs. 50 mu M (HN); on the contents of protein, mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), phenolic compounds and total fatty acids, antioxidant activity, calcification and C: N ratios were analyzed in 3 eulittoral Mediterranean macroalgae with different bio-optical characteristics and carbon assimilation efficiencies: Cystoseira tamariscifolia (Heterokontophyta), Ulva rigida (Chlorophyta) and Ellisolandia elongata (Rhodophyta). After acclimation to different pCO(2) and nitrogen conditions for 6 d, the algae were subjected to a 4 degrees C temperature increase for 3 d. Increasing temperature and pCO(2) produced alterations in the biochemical composition of the 3 macroalgae. Short-term variations of protein levels were observed in U. rigida, with clearly decreased values in the HCLN treatment. In C. tamariscifolia, protein decreased after the temperature increase but only under LC. The interaction of temperature and N affected phenolic compounds only in U. rigida and the content of MAAs in E. elongata. The functional patterns of the 3 macroalgae in response to the pCO(2), nitrogen and temperature regimes may be explained in terms of their bio-optical characteristics and antioxidant activity. The vulnerability and acclimation of the 3 species to the expected variations of climate change factors are discussed.

A Monitoring-PAM fluorometer with high temporal resolution (every 5 min) was used to assess the effects on photosynthesis in Ulva rigida (Chlorophyta) during exposure to 2 different CO2 conditions: current ('LC', 390 ppm), and the predicted level for the year 2100 ('HC', 700 ppm) in a crossed combination with 2 different daily pulsed nitrate concentrations ('LN', 5 mu M and 'HN', 50 mu M) and 2 temperature regimes (ambient and ambient +4 degrees C). Effective quantum yield (Delta F/F-m') in the afternoon was lower under HCLN conditions than under the other treatments. The decrease in Delta F/F-m' from noon to the afternoon was significantly lower under +4 degrees C compared to ambient temperature. Maximal quantum yield (F-v/F-m) decreased during the night with a transient increase 1 to 3 h after sunset, whereas a transient increase in Delta F/F-m' was observed after sunrise. These transient increases have been related to activation/ deactivation of the electron transport rate and the relaxation of non-photochemical quenching. Relative electron transport rate was higher under the LC and +4 degrees C treatment, but the differences were not significant due to high variability in daily irradiances. Redundancy analysis on the data matrix for the light periods indicates that photosynthetically active radiation through the day is the main variable determining the physiological responses. The effects of nutrient levels (mainly carbon) and experimental increase of temperature were low but significant. During the night, the effect of nutrient availability is of special importance with an opposite effect of nitrogen compared to carbon increase. The application of the Monitoring-PAM to evaluate the effects of environmental conditions by simulating climate change variations under outdoor-controlled, semi-controlled conditions is discussed.

An understanding of the temperature-dependence of solubility of carbon dioxide (CO2) in water is important for many industrial processes. Voluminous work has been done by both quantum chemical methods and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on the interaction between CO2 and water, but a quantitative evaluation of solubility remains elusive. In this work, we have approached the problem by considering quantum chemically calculated total energies and thermal energies, and incorporating the effects of mixing, hydrogen bonding, and phonon modes. An overall equation relating the calculated free energy and entropy of mixing with the gas-solution equilibrium constant has been derived. This equation has been iteratively solved to obtain the solubility as functions of temperature and dielectric constant. The calculated solubility versus temperature plot excellently matches the observed plot. Solubility has been shown to increase with dielectric constant, for example, by addition of electrolytes. We have also found that at the experimentally reported concentration of enzyme RuBP in bundle sheath cells of chloroplast in C-4 green plants, the concentration of CO2 can effectively increase by as much as a factor of 7.1-38.5. This stands in agreement with the observed effective rise in concentration by as much as 10 times.

Bioelectrochemical systems recover valuable components and energy in the form of hydrogen or electricity from aqueous organic streams. We derive a one-dimensional steady-state model for ion transport in a bioelectrochemical system, with the ions subject to diffusional and electrical forces. Since most of the ionic species can undergo acid-base reactions, ion transport is combined in our model with infinitely fast ion acid-base equilibrations. The model describes the current-induced ammonia evaporation and recovery at the cathode side of a bioelectrochemical system that runs on an organic stream containing ammonium ions. We identify that the rate of ammonia evaporation depends not only on the current but also on the flow rate of gas in the cathode chamber, the diffusion of ammonia from the cathode back into the anode chamber, through the ion exchange membrane placed in between, and the membrane charge density.

Extensive data have been collected on the carbon dioxide system during the post monsoon season in the eastern Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea of the northeastern Indian Ocean. The vertical distribution of temperature and salinity in the eastern Bay of Bengal were similar to that in the Andaman Sea down to 700-800 m. Below 1200 m depth the salinity remained constant at 34.90 in the Andaman Sea whereas it decreased to 34.80 in the eastern Bay of Bengal. On the other hand, deep waters (> 1200 m) of the Andaman Sea were warmer than those of the Bay of Bengal by approximately 2 degreesC. Dissolved oxygen concentrations in the subsurface waters were higher in the Andaman Sea than in the central Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea due to lower rates of regeneration. Total alkalinity, and pCO(2) showed similar distribution patterns both in the eastern Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea up to a depth of 1000-1200 m. Below this depth, their concentrations were higher in the latter than compared to former due to warmer waters. Carbonate saturation depth with respect to aragonite was shallow (approximately 300 m) in the Andaman Sea whereas deeper waters were found to be under saturated with respect to calcite., Des données extensives sur le système dioxyde de carbone ont été recueillies en saison post-mousson dans la partie est du golfe du Bengale et la mer d’Andaman (océan Indien NE). Les teneurs en oxygène dissous des eaux de subsurface sont plus élevées en mer d’Andaman qu’au cœur du golfe du Bengale ou qu’en mer d’Arabie, en raison d’une moindre régénération. L’alcalinité totale et la pCO2 présentent des distributions similaires dans les deux zones jusqu’à une profondeur de 1000 à 1200 m. En dessous, les concentrations sont plus élevées en mer d’Andaman en raison de la présence d’eaux plus chaudes. La profondeur de saturation en carbonates en regard de l’aragonite est moindre (environ 300 m) en mer d’Andaman, alors que les eaux plus profondes sont sous-saturées en calcite.

Modern high-rate anaerobic wastewater treatment processes are rapidly becoming popular for industrial wastewater treatment. However, until recently stable process conditions could not be guaranteed for alcoholic wastewaters containing higher concentrations of methanol. Although methanol can be directly converted into methane by methanogens, under specific conditions it can also be converted into acetate and butyrate by acetogens. The accumulation of volatile fatty acids can lead to reactor instability in a weakly buffered reactor. Since this process was insufficiently understood, the application of high-rate anaerobic reactors was highly questionable. This research investigated the environmental factors that are of importance in the predominance of methylotrophic methanogens over acetogens in a natural mixed culture during anaerobic wastewater treatment in upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactors. Technological and microbiological aspects were investigated. Additionally, the route by which methanol is converted into methane is also presented

International audience; An in situ test in the Opalinus Clay formation, termed porewater chemistry (PC) experiment, was carried out for a period of 5 years. It was based on the concept of diffusive equilibration whereby a traced water with a composition close to that expected in the formation was continuously circulated and monitored in a packed-off borehole. The main original focus was to obtain reliable data on the pH/pCO(2) conditions of the porewater. but because of unexpected microbiologically-induced redox reactions, the objective was extended to elucidate the biogeochemical processes occurring in the borehole and to understand their impact on pH/pCO(2) and porewater chemistry in the low permeability clay formation. The behaviour of the conservative tracers (2)H and Br(-) could be explained by diffusive dilution in the clay and moreover the results showed that diffusive equilibration between the borehole water and the formation occurred within about 3 year's time. However, the composition and pH/pCO(2) conditions differed considerably from those of the in situ porewater. Thus, pH was lower and pCO(2) was higher than indicated by complementary laboratory investigations. The noted differences are explained by microbiologically-induced redox reactions occurring in the borehole and in the interfacial wall area which were caused by an organic source released from the equipment material. The degradation of this source was accompanied by sulfate reduction and - to a lesser extent - by methane generation, which induced a high rate of acetogenic reactions corresponding to very high acetate concentrations for the first 600 days. Concomitantly with the anaerobic degradation of an organic source, carbonate dissolution occurred and these processes resulted in high pCO(2) and alkalinities as well as drop in pH. Afterwards, the microbial regime changed and, in parallel to ongoing sulfate reduction, acetate was consumed, leading to a strong decrease in TOG which reached background levels after about 1200 days. In spite of the depletion of this organic perturbation in the circuit water, sulfate reduction and methanogenesis continued to occur at a constant rate leading to near-to-constant concentrations of sulfate and bicarbonate as well as pH/pCO(2) conditions until the end of the experiment. The main sink for sulphur was iron sulfide, which precipitated as FeS (am) and FeS(2). The chemical and isotopic composition was affected by the complex interplay of diffusion, carbon degradation rates, mineral equilibria and dissolution rates, iron sulfide precipitation rates, and clay exchange reactions. The (13)C signals measured for different carbon species showed significant variations which could only be partly explained. The main cations, such as Na, Ca and Mg remained remarkably constant during the experiment, thus indicating the strong buffering of the formation via cation and proton exchange as well as carbonate dissolution/precipitation reactions.

Climate change scenarios predict a doubling of the atmospheric CO(2) concentration by the end of this century. Yet, how rising CO(2) will affect the species composition of aquatic microbial communities is still largely an open question. In this study, we develop a resource competition model to investigate competition for dissolved inorganic carbon in dense algal blooms. The model predicts how dynamic changes in carbon chemistry, pH and light conditions during bloom development feed back on competing phytoplankton species. We test the model predictions in chemostat experiments with monocultures and mixtures of a toxic and non-toxic strain of the freshwater cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. The toxic strain was able to reduce dissolved CO(2) to lower concentrations than the non-toxic strain, and became dominant in competition at low CO(2) levels. Conversely, the non-toxic strain could grow at lower light levels, and became dominant in competition at high CO(2) levels but low light availability. The model captured the observed reversal in competitive dominance, and was quantitatively in good agreement with the results of the competition experiments. To assess whether microcystins might have a role in this reversal of competitive dominance, we performed further competition experiments with the wild-type strain M. aeruginosa PCC 7806 and its mcyB mutant impaired in microcystin production. The microcystin-producing wild type had a strong selective advantage at low CO(2) levels but not at high CO(2) levels. Our results thus demonstrate both in theory and experiment that rising CO(2) levels can alter the community composition and toxicity of harmful algal blooms.

Survival and growth of terrestrial plants is negatively affected by complete submergence. This is mainly the result of hampered gas exchange between plants and their environment, since gas diffusion is severely reduced in water compared with air, resulting in O2 deficits which limit aerobic respiration. The continuation of photosynthesis could probably alleviate submergence-stress in terrestrial plants, but its potential under water will be limited as the availability of CO2 is hampered. Several submerged terrestrial plant species, however, express plastic responses of the shoot which may reduce gas diffusion resistance and enhance benefits from underwater photosynthesis. In particular, the plasticity of the flooding-tolerant terrestrial species Rumex palustris turned out to be remarkable, making it a model species suitable for the study of these responses. During submergence, the morphology and anatomy of newly developed leaves changed: 'aquatic' leaves were thinner and had thinner cuticles. As a consequence, internal O2 concentrations and underwater CO2 assimilation rates were higher at the prevailing low CO2 concentrations in water. Compared with heterophyllous amphibious plant species, underwater photosynthesis rates of terrestrial plants may be very limited, but the effects of underwater photosynthesis on underwater survival are impressive. A combination of recently published data allowed quantification of the magnitude of the acclimation response in this species. Gas diffusion resistance in terrestrial leaves underwater was about 15,000 times higher than in air. Strikingly, acclimation to submergence reduced this factor to 400, indicating that acclimated leaves of R. palustris had an approximately 40 times lower gas diffusion resistance than non-acclimated ones.

Terrestrial plants experience multiple stresses when they are submerged, caused both by oxygen deficiency due to reduced gas diffusion in water, and by shade due to high turbidity of the floodwater. It has been suggested that responses to submergence are de facto responses to low light intensity. • We investigated the extent to which submergence and shade induce similar acclimation responses by comparing two terrestrial Rumex species that differ in their responses to flooding. • Our study confirms that there are strong similarities between acclimation responses to shade and submergence. Petiole length, specific leaf area (SLA), chlorophyll parameters and underwater light-compensation points changed at least qualitatively in the same direction. Maximum underwater photosynthesis rate, however, did discriminate between the functionality of the responses, as the acclimation to submergence appeared to be more effective than acclimation to shade at saturating light. • We conclude that acclimation to submergence involves more than an increase in SLA to achieve the significant reduction of diffusion resistance for gas exchange between leaves and the water column.

The carbon isotopic signature (δ 13 C) of dissolved inorganic carbon and food web components was examined in two high mountain lakes. Rio Seco Lake is partially surrounded by alpine meadows and has temporal inlets, whereas La Caldera Lake is located on rocky terrain and does not receive inputs from runoff. We assessed whether these con- trasting catchments involve differences in the isotopic signature of the food web components and then in the reliance on terrestrial carbon. The δ 13 C of dissolved inorganic carbon was not significantly different between lakes and reflected an atmospheric gas exchange origin. Unexpectedly, bulk particulate organic matter showed enriched δ 13 C values in both lakes, suggesting a terrestrial vegetation influence. Bulk particulate organic matter was exploited mostly by the cladoceran Daphnia pulicaria, whereas the copepod Mixodiaptomus laciniatus was 13 C depleted relative to particulate organic matter, indicating a selective feeding on an isotopically lighter source, likely phytoplankton. The results ob- tained show that, despite contrasting catchments, the food web of both lakes might be partially supported by terrestrial carbon for which utilization is species specific. Le lac Rio Seco est partiellement entoure de prairies alpines et possede des tributaires temporaires, tandis que le lac La Caldera est situe sur un terrain rocheux et ne recoit pas d'apport des eaux de ruissellement. Nous avons examine si ces basins versants dissemblables entrainent des differences dans les signatures isotopiques des composantes du reseau alimentaire, ainsi que dans les dependances du carbone d'origine terrestre. Le δ 13 C du carbone inorganique dissous ne differe pas significativement dans les deux lacs et reflete une origine par echanges gazeux atmospheriques. De facon inattendue, la matiere organique particulaire grossiere dans les deux lacs montre une enrichissement des valeurs de δ 13 C, ce qui laisse croire a une influence de la vegetation ter- restre. La matiere organique particulaire grossiere est surtout exploitee par le cladocere Daphnia pulicaria, alors que le copepode Mixodiaptomus laciniatus est appauvri en 13 C par rapport a la matiere organique particulaire, ce qui indique qu'il se nourrit de facon selective d'une source moins riche en isotopes, vraisemblablement le phytoplancton. Les resultats obtenus montrent que, malgre la difference des bassins versants, les reseaux trophiques des deux lacs peuvent etre alimentes en partie par du carbone d'origine terrestre, dont l'utilisation varie avec les especes.

Experiments were conducted on the calcareous red alga, Corallina elongata, a species representative of shallow water vegetal cover in Mediterranean areas with biomass ranging from 820 to 2544 gDW.m-2, in order to estimate its productivity and calcification rates. Carbonate and oxygen budgets were estimated on samples incubated in situ under natural light cycles, by measuring initial and final dissolved oxygen, pH and alkalinity levels. In light conditions, oxygen concentrations and pH values increased as a consequence of oxygen production and carbon dioxide consumption due to the productivity process, and were a direct function of sample biomass. Strictly-reverse dynamics were recorded in dark conditions. A comparison of photosynthetic performances was conducted on a non-calcareous green alga, Ulva rigida, which showed higher rates of oxygen production and pH modification than C. elongata, but no significant change in total alkalinity. For C. elongata, a significant decrease in total alkalinity with incubation time was observed under light conditions, which was directly related to the algal sample biomass (R2 = 0.95; n=16). Light to dark calcification ratio (L/D) was about 3.6. In these experiments, the photosynthetic quotient of C. elongata was 0.89, its net carbon productivity was 2.5 g C.m-2.d-1, gross production to daily respiration (Pg/R) was about 4.9 and its calcification rate was estimated at 13.8 g CaCO3.m-2.d-1. Los experimentos se efectuaron sobre el alga calcárea roja, Corallina elongata, un representante de aguas someras en áreas mediterráneas con biomasa comprendida entre los límites de 820 GDW m-2, y 2544 GDW m-2para estimar su productividad y las tasas de calcificación. Las concentraciones de carbonato y oxígeno fueron estimados sobre muestras incubadas in situ bajo ciclos naturales de luz, midiendo el oxígeno disuelto al inicio y al final, así como los niveles de alcalinidad y pH. En condiciones de luz, las concentraciones de oxígeno y el pH aumentaron como consecuencia de la producción de oxígeno y el consumo de dióxido de carbono debido al proceso de productividad, y eran una función directa de la biomasa de la muestra. La dinámica estrictamente inversa fue registrada en condiciones de oscuridad. Una comparación del funcionamiento fotosintético se llevó a cabo sobre un alga nocalcárea verde, Ulva rigida, que presentó tasas más altas de producción de oxígeno y variación de pH que C. elongata, pero ningún cambio significativo en alcalinidad total. Para C. elongata, una disminución significativa en alcalinidad total con el tiempo de incubación fue observada en condiciones de luz, que directamente fueron relacionadas con la biomasa de muestra algal (R2 = 0.95; n=16). La relación entre la calcificación a la luz y a la oscuridad (L/D) fue aproximadamente 3.6. En estos experimentos, el cociente fotosintético de C. elongata fue 0.89, su productividad neta de carbono, 2.5 g C.m-2.d-1, la relación producción total respecto a la respiración diaria (Pg/R), 4.9 y su tasa de calcificación, 13.8 g CaCO3. In analogy to the Fe hypothesis, the Zn hypothesis states that Zn may limit primary production in some regions of the world oceans and therefore influence the global carbon cycle. The proposed mechanism is via carbon limitation due to a lack of the cofactor Zn in carbonic anhydrase. In the current conceptual model for the use of inorganic carbon by E huxleyi, carbonic anhydrase in the chloroplast generates CO2 from HCO3- at the site where CO2 is fixed by ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase (Rubisco). The H+ that is required in this reaction comes from calcification. From this it can be expected that carbonic anhydrase affects the use of HCO3- in photosynthesis. First, we grew E. huxleyi under ZN2+ limitation. The K-1/2 for growth of E. huxleyi is 19 +/- 8 pmol L-1 ZN2+ with a minimum requirement of 9 +/- 3 pmol L-1. Additions of both ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and ZnCl2 show that EDTA is not detrimental to E. huxleyi up to a concentration of 200 mumol L-1. Then we grew E. huxleyi under ZN2+-HCO3- colimitation to test the conceptual model outlined above. The results were partly inconsistent with the model. Contrary to what was expected from the conceptual model, the efficiency of CO2 use decreased when both ZN2+ and HCO3- concentrations were low, even though the experiment was conducted at a constant high concentration of CO2. This shows that ZN2+, and possibly carbonic anhydrase activity, are needed for CO2 fixation also. In accordance with the model, we found that ZN2+ affects the efficiency of HCO3- use by E huxleyi. Since the lowest ZN2+ concentration in the Northeast Pacific is similar to0.4 pmol L-1, Zn limitation of E. huxleyi growth may indeed occur.

[ 1] The distribution and sources of organic and inorganic carbon were studied in the Gautami Godavari estuary (Andhra Pradesh, India) and in a mangrove ecosystem in its delta during pre-monsoon. In the oligohaline and mesohaline section ( salinity 0-15) of the estuary, internal production of total alkalinity (TAlk) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was recorded, and the delta(13)C(DIC) profile suggests that carbonate dissolution may be an important process determining the DIC dynamics in this section of the Godavari. The partial pressure of CO2 (pCO(2)) was fairly low along the entire salinity gradient, (293-500 ppm), but much higher and more variable (1375-6437 ppm) in the network of tidal mangrove creeks in the delta. Here, variations in the concentration and delta(13)C of the DIC pool were shown to result largely from the mineralization of organic matter. The present study clearly identifies the mangrove creeks as an active site of mineralization and CO2 efflux to the atmosphere, but shows that these changes in the aquatic biogeochemistry are a localized feature, rapidly fading in the adjacent Kakinada Bay. Our data indicate that mineralization of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) of mangrove origin, and its subsequent efflux as CO2 to the atmosphere may represent an important fate for mangrove carbon. Although further quantification of this process in a variety of systems is required, we suggest that some of the current ideas on the role of mangroves in the carbon budget of the coastal zone may need to be reconsidered. ispartof: Global biogeochemical cycles vol:17 issue:4 status: published

Particulate inorganic carbon (calcium carbonate mineral) is produced by pelagic calcifying organisms in the upper layers of the open ocean, it sinks to the deep sea, is partly dissolved and partly stored in the geological archive. This phenomenon, known as the carbonate pump, is an important component of the global carbon cycle and exerts a major influence on climate. The amount of carbonate mineral produced depends on the evolutionary and ecological success of calcifying pelagic organisms. The formulation of adequate predictive carbonate pump modules raises the problem that the behaviour of this highly diverse set of organisms needs to be taken into account. To overcome this difficulty, we propose a “model system” approach, whereby a single representative organism, the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi , is investigated in detailed interactive experimental and modelling studies. To construct a comprehensive model of the carbonate pump, subsequent research is envisaged on additional representative organisms, but this work is likely to be facilitated by the experience gained with E. huxleyi . The model system approach permits (1) an emphasis on the non-linear character of the fluxes; (2) a focus on the coupling of the carbonate pump with other climatically important phenomena — the organic carbon pump and DMS production; and (3) exploitation of the experimental accessibility of the E. huxleyi system.

Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle exhibits an inducible C-4- type photosynthetic cycle, but lacks Kranz anatomy. Leaves in the C-4-type state (but not C-3-type) contained up to 5-fold higher internal dissolved inorganic carbon (DIG) concentrations than the medium, indicating that they possessed a CO2-concentrating mechanism (CCM). Several lines of evidence indicated that the chloroplast was the likely site of CO2 generation. From C-4-type leaf [DIC] measurements, the estimated chloroplastic free [CO2] was 400 mmol m(-3). This gave a calculated 2% O-2 inhibition of photosynthesis, which was identical to the measured value, and provided independent evidence that the estimated [CO2] was close to the true value. A homogeneous distribution of DIC in the C-4-type leaf could not account for such a high [CO2], or the resultant low O-2 inhibition. For C-3-type leaves the estimated chloroplastic [CO2] was only 7 mmol m(-3), which gave high, and similar, calculated and measured O-2 inhibition values of 22 and 26%, respectively. The CCM did not appear to be located at the plasma membrane, as it operated at low and high pH, indicating that it was independent of use of HCO3- from the medium. Also, both C-3- and C-4-type Hydrilla leaves showed pH polarity in the light, with abaxial and adaxial boundary layer values of about pH 4.0 and 10.5, respectively. Thus, pH polarity was not a direct component of the CCM, though it probably improved access to HCO3. Additionally, iodoacetamide and methyl viologen greatly reduced abaxial acidification, but not the steady-state CCM. Inhibitor studies suggested that the CCM required photosynthetically generated ATP, but Calvin cycle activity was not essential. Both leaf types accumulated DIC in the dark by an ATP-requiring process, possibly respiration, and C-4-type leaves fixed CO2 at 11.8% of the light rate. The operation of a CCM to minimize photorespiration, and the ability to recapture respiratory CO2 at night, would conserve DIC in a densely vegetated lake environment where daytime [CO2] is severely limiting, while [O-2] and temperatures are high.
