Red yeast rice is consumed as a medicinal food to lower blood lipids. Besides, it is used to color food, make wine, etc. In this study, water‐soluble oligosaccharides in red yeast rice were extracted by ultrasonic‐assisted extraction method. The parameters to extract oligosaccharides from red yeast rice were optimized by the Box‐Behnken design under the following optimal extraction conditions: extraction temperature, 60°C; extraction time, 97 min; and liquid/material ratio, 25 ml/g. The structure and the antioxidant activity of the new oligosaccharide were preliminarily investigated. Total carbohydrates extracted from red yeast rice with 80% ethanol–water solution (v/v) were first removed from pigments using D101 macroporous adsorption resin. The total sugar contents were then purified by DE52 resins and Sephadex G‐25 resins to obtain red yeast rice oligosaccharides, coded as RYRO1. Structural characterization experiments indicated that RYRO1 is an oligosaccharide with a weight average molecular weight of 874 Da and a theoretical degree of polymerization of 4.86. RYRO1 is composed of mannose, glucosamine, glucose, and galactose with a molar ratio of 0.248:0.019:1:0.026. The ABTS, DPPH, and hydroxyl free radical scavenging assays showed antioxidant nature of RYRO1., A new oligosaccharide was isolated from red yeast rice. RYRO1 consists of mannose, glucosamine, glucose, and galactose. RYRO1 possesses in vitro antioxidant activity.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a lethal malignancy without safe and effective therapeutic drugs. In this study, the anti-TNBC bioassay-guided isolation of the medicinal plant Croton kongensis followed by the structural modification led to the construction of a small ent-kaurane diterpenoid library (1-25). With subsequent biological screening, 20 highly potent compounds (IC50s < 3 μM) were identified. Among them, 8,9-seco-ent-kaurane 6 displayed comparable activity (IC50s ∼ 80 nM) to doxorubicin but with better selectivity. The analysis of structure-activity relationships suggested that the cleavage of the C8-C9 bond and the presence of α,β-unsaturated ketone moiety were essential for the activity. The mechanistic study revealed that 6 induced apoptosis, autophagy, and metastasis suppression in TNBC cells via inhibition of Akt. In vivo, 6 significantly suppressed the TNBC tumor growth without causing side effects. All these results suggested that 6 may serve as a promising lead for the development of novel anti-TNBC agents in the future.

Cadmium-based quantum dots (Cd-QDs) show decent performance for lighting applications due to good color saturation, an excellent high quantum yield, and a narrow full-width at half-maximum. However, the intrinsic toxicity of Cd is a major hindrance to related applications, especially in the biological field. ZnSe, with a band gap of 2.7 eV and lower toxicity than CdSe or CdS, is promising as a blue luminescent material. Herein, we mainly reported the preparation and luminescence properties of nanostructured ZnSe/ZnS multilayer thin films with bright blue photoluminescence. The photoluminescence spectrum contained two emission peaks, located at about 442 nm (near band-edge emission) and 550 nm (defect-related emission), respectively. More importantly, the photoluminescence performance and decay were explored in detail through low-temperature photoluminescence spectra. In addition, the nanostructured ZnSe/ZnS multilayer thin films showed favorable photostability.

Determination of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes quality plays an important role in commercial processing. In this research, a rapid approach based on near infrared spectroscopy was proposed to the determination of soluble solids content (SSC), pH, and total phenol content (TPC) in entire bunches of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Standardized normal variate (SNV) and competitive adaptive weighted sampling (CARS), genetic algorithm (GA), and synergy interval partial least squares (si-PLS) were used to optimize the spectral data. With optimal combination input, the prediction accuracy of partial least squares regression (PLSR) and support vector regression (SVR) models was compared. The results showed that these models based on variable optimization method could predict well the SSC, pH, and TPC of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The correlation coefficient of prediction for SSC, pH, and TPC had reached more than 0.85. This work provides an alternative to analyze the chemical parameters in whole bunch of Cabernet Sauvignon grape.

Intelligent wearable devices have many characteristics such as convenience, intelligence and real-time. Through the detection and analysis of wearable devices and the real-time transmission of data, it can test vital signs and movement and other important information, monitor human body and provide data support for health status. According to the development of wearable devices in recent years, this article summarizes the different ways to wear wearable devices, the common materials for wearable devices and the different sensing modes of wearable devices. Then its applications in physiological and motion detection are also presented. Finally, the challenges and opportunities faced by the wearable devices are analyzed and prospected.

An unprecedented metal-free electrochemical method for the divergent synthesis of complex dibenzo[b,d]furans and 9H-carbazoles via amino-assisted selective intramolecular C–O or C–N couplings of amino-2-(2-aminoaryl)phenols is described, which features low cost, controllable chemoselectivity, broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance. Experimental and cyclic voltammetry analysis show that amino activating groups located at 4 or 5 position of the phenol ring can reduce the oxidation potential to selectively activate aryl C–N and C–O bonds, thus achieving intramolecular C–O and C–N couplings, respectively.

An unprecedented metal-/external-oxidant-free electrochemical intermolecular [3 + 2] heteroannulation of anilines with electron-deficient pyridines enabled by dual C–H radical aminations for producing functionally diverse benzo[4,5]imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines is described. The site-selectivity of aminations of aryl C(sp2)–H bonds relies on the electronic effect of two reaction partners: each contributed two reactive sites (a C(sp2)–H bond and a nitrogen atom-based functional group) and the electron-withdrawing groups at the 4 position of the pyridine ring are crucial. Mechanistic studies show that this method sequence consists of the generation of the nitrogen-centered radical (NCR) and the pyridine radical anion, radical coupling and dual C–N aminations.

A cobalt-promoted electrochemical 1,2-diarylation of alkenes with electron-rich aromatic hydrocarbons via direct dual C-H functionalizations is described, which employs a radical relay strategy to produce polyaryl-functionalized alkanes. Simply by using graphite rod cathode instead of platinum plate cathode, chemoselectivity of this radical relay strategy is shifted to the dehydrogenative [2+2+2] cycloaddition via 1,2-diarylation, annulation, and dehydrogenation cascades leading to complex 11,12-dihydroindolo[2,3-a]carbazoles. Mechanistical studies indicate that a key step for the radical relay processes is transformations of the aromatic hydrocarbons to the aryl sp2 -hybridized carbon-centered radicals via deprotonation of the corresponding aryl radical cation intermediates with bases.

Acute lung injury (ALI) involves series of inflammatory pathologies and cause high morbidity. Salviplenoid A (SA) was a new sesquiterpenoid from the traditional inflammatory herb Salvia plebeia. In our previous study, SA exhibited antiinflammatory activity in RAW264.7 cells. However, the extensive effects of SA in human cells and in vivo and the active mechanisms are unclear. Thus, in this study, we sought to access its effects in vitro and in vivo and to investigate its mechanisms. SA was proved to inhibit the induction of proinflammatory cytokines in human cell types, including pulmonary epithelial cells and endothetial cells. It also depressed monocyte adhesion. Moreover, SA potently attenuated the acute lung inflammation in the LPS-induced mouse model shown by down-regulation of proinflammatory mediators, inhibition of polymorphonuclear neutrophil infiltration, and alleviation of related symptoms like alveolar congestion and mucus secretion. Further evaluation confirmed that SA regulated NF-κB pathway by inhibiting the IκB-α phosphorylation. And it markedly mediated Nrf2/HO-1 pathway by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 expression and promoting Nrf2 nuclear translocation. Therefore, SA could attenuate acute lung inflammation via suppressing NF-κB and activating Nrf2, which provide a theoretical basis for the potential application of SA in clinic.

Palladium is a versatile transition metal used to catalyze a large number of chemical transformations, largely due to its ability to access various oxidation states (0, I, II, III, and IV). Autophagy is considered as an effective strategy for host cells to eliminate intracellular Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Dual-specificity phosphatase 5 (DUSP5) is an endogenous phosphatase of ERK1/2, and plays an important role in host innate immune responses, its function in autophagy regulation however remains unexplored. In the present study, the function of DUSP5 in autophagy in Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG)-infected RAW264.7 cells, a murine macrophage-like cell line, was examined by assessing the alteration of the cell morphology, expression of autophagy markers, and ERK1/2 signaling activation. The results demonstrated that the BCG infection could induce DUSP5 expression and activate ERK1/2 signaling in RAW264.7 cells; an activation of ERK1/2 signaling contributed to autophagic process in RAW264.7 cells. Moreover, DUSP5 knockdown increased the expression of autophagy-related proteins (Atgs), including LC3-II, Beclin1, Atg5 and Atg7. However, an overexpression of DUSP5 exhibited an opposite effect. Mechanistically, DUSP5 could inhibit the formation of autophagosome by suppressing the phosphorylation of signaling molecules in ERK1/2 signaling cascade. This study thus demonstrated a novel role of DUSP5 in modulating autophagy inRAW264.7 cells in response to BCG infection in particular, and autophagy macrophage to Mtb in general.

A general, ideal atom utilization electrochemical technology to enable alkene alkoxyhalogenation and organohalide dehalogenation in one pot is presented. This technology is highlighted by convergent strategy integrating several reactions, such as alkene alkoxyhalogenation, organohalide dehalogenation, and dehalogenation deuteration. This study investigated the protective effects and mechanisms of sevoflurane preconditioning (SPC) on neurons in ischemic mice. After SPC, mice were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Cerebral infarction area, cell apoptosis, and metallothionein-1 (MT-1) and metallothionein-2 (MT-2) expressions in MCAO mice were analyzed. Mouse primary neurons were isolated and cultured to determine the location of metallothioneins (MTs) using immunofluorescence. Neurons transfected with MT-siRNA, exogenous MTs, or sh-MTF-1 were subjected to SPC and/or oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD), and MT-1/MT-2 expression and neurotoxin release were assayed. Meanwhile, neurons were treated with the nitric oxide donor SNAP, degraded SNAP, or the peroxide initiator paraquat, and alterations in MT-1/MT-2 expression and neurotoxicity release were observed. SPC attenuated neuronal injury and apoptosis in MCAO mice. SPC could protect neurons against OGD injury and resulted in upregulated MT-1/MT-2 expression. MT-siRNA transfection led to the downregulated expression of MT-1/MT-2 and increased neurotoxicity, and the expression patterns of these neurons were different from those of neurons transfected with exogenous MTs. The knockdown of MTs could hinder the protective effect of SPC against OGD. Pretreatment with SNAP or paraquat could increase MTF-1 expression in the nucleus of neurons, protecting against OGD injury. The inhibition of nitric oxide and peroxide inhibited the protective role of SPC in OGD by downregulating MTF-1 expression. sh-MTF-1 transfection downregulated MT-1/MT-2 expression and enhanced neurotoxicity in neurons. SPC confers neuroprotection in focal cerebral ischemia mouse models by upregulating the expression of MT-1 and MT-2 by activating NO and peroxide and increasing MTF-1 expression in the nucleus.

Dihydroartemisinin (DHA) is a potent anti-cancer drug that has limited clinical applications due to poor water solubility and low bioavailability. We designed a biodegradable poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether-poly(ε-caprolactone) (MPEG-PCL) micelle carrier for DHA using the self-assembly method. The DHA/MPEG-PCL nanoparticles were spherical with an average particle size of 30.28 ± 0.27 nm, and released the drug in a sustained manner in aqueous solution. The drug-loaded nanoparticles showed dose-dependent toxicity in HeLa cells by inducing cycle arrest and apoptosis. Furthermore, compared to free DHA, the DHA/MPEG-PCL nanoparticles showed higher therapeutic efficacy and lower toxicity in vivo, and significantly inhibited tumor growth and prolonged the survival of tumor-bearing nude mice. In addition, the tumor tissues of the DHA/MPEG-PCL-treated mice showed a marked decline in the in situ expression of proliferation and angiogenesis markers. Taken together, the self-assembled DHA/MPEG-PCL nanoparticles are a highly promising delivery system for targeted cancer treatment.

Cyclocarya paliurus polysaccharide (CPP) has many beneficial biological activities. Although the antioxidant activity of CPP is well-known, the stress tolerance and underlying mechanism of the activities of CPP have not been determined in vivo. In this study, we applied the emerging model of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) to observe that CPP imparted stronger resistance to stress than the positive control Astragalus polysaccharide (H2O2- and paraquat-induced oxidative stress, as well as heat stress) without threatening the growth and reproduction of worms. Further studies found that CPP-treated worms had a strong antioxidant defense system that downregulated peroxidation products (ROS, MDA, NEFAs and GSSG) and upregulated antioxidant enzymes and nonenzymatic activities (SOD, CAT, GSH-Px and GSH). The CPP-treated worms also exhibited improved physiological functions, such as inhibition of age pigment and improvement of lifespan, mobility and neuroprotection. Further exploration of the mechanism of action of CPP treatment suggested that increased resistance to CPP might activate stress-inducible genes (sod-3, sod-5, ctl-1, ctl-2, hsp-16.1 and hsp-16.2) via skn-1 and hsf-1, rather than daf-16. These findings suggest that CPP may have health benefits for humans.

Red yeast rice (RYRP) has been utilized for coloring food, brewing wine, and preserving meat, which is also used as a folk medicine for centuries. In this study, a water-soluble nonstarch polysaccharide from RYRP was extracted by using ultrasonic-assisted extraction method. By using the Box-Behnken design to optimize the parameters for extracting the RYRP, the maximum extraction yield (3.37 ± 0.78%) was obtained under the optimal extraction conditions as follows: ratio of water to raw material (40 mL/g), extraction temperature (62 °C), extraction time (75 Min), and ultrasonic power (200 W). Moreover, monosaccharide composition analysis showed that RYRP was consisted of mannose, glucosamine, glucose, and galactose with a molar ratio of 0.152:0.015:1:0.149. The molecular weight distribution analysis showed that the average molecular weight of the RYRP fraction was about 3.49 × 103 Da. Furthermore, RYRP exhibited significant antioxidant activities in vitro and the gastrointestinal-protective effect in vivo using gastrointestinal disorders model mice. RYRP could be explored as a potential source in the pharmaceutical and functional food industries.

The recombinant adeno‑associated virus 8 (rAAV8) vector is a widely used tool in basic research and clinical trials. The cytomegalovirus immediate‑early enhancer/chicken β‑actin (CAG) promoter is a synthetic promoter used in adenoviral constructs with a wide spectrum and notable efficiency. The thyroxine binding globulin (TBG) promoter is a liver‑specific promoter, which directs transgene expression in hepatocytes. However, the transduction efficiency of the rAAV vector is dependent on both the administration routes and the promoter elements. In the present study, the transduction efficiency in the liver following intraperitoneal (IP) and intravenous (IV) injections of rAAV8 with the CAG, TBG669 and TBG410 promoters was compared. Enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) expression was used as the biomarker to indicate efficiency. Among the three different promoters, CAG exhibited the highest efficiency from both IV and IP injections. Following IV administration, EGFP expression, induced by the CAG promoter, was 67‑fold higher compared with that in the TBG410 promoter group and 26‑fold higher compared with that in the TBG669 promoter group. International audience; African swine fever (ASF) is mainly an acute hemorrhagic disease which is highly contagious and lethal to domestic pigs and wild boars. The global pig industry has suffered significant economic losses due to the lack of an effective vaccine and treatment. The African swine fever virus (ASFV) has a large genome of 170–190 kb, encoding more than 150 proteins. During infection, ASFV evades host innate immunity via multiple viral proteins. A528R is a very important member of the polygene family of ASFV, which was shown to inhibit IFN-β production by targeting NF-κB, but its mechanism is not clear. This study has shown that A528R can suppress the TLR8-NF-κB signaling pathway, including the inhibition of downstream promoter activity, NF-κB p65 phosphorylation and nuclear translocation, and the antiviral and antibacterial activity. Further, we found the cellular co-localization and interaction between A528R and p65, and ANK repeat domains of A528R and RHD of p65 are involved in their interaction and the inhibition of p65 activity. Therefore, we conclude that A528R inhibits TLR8-NF-κB signaling by targeting p65 activation and nuclear translocation.

The monotherapy of mTOR inhibitors (mTORi) in cancer clinical practice has achieved limited success due to the concomitant activation of compensatory pathways, such as Akt signaling and cytoprotective autophagy. Thus, the combination of mTORi and the inhibitors of these pro-survival pathways has been considered a promising therapeutic strategy. Herein, we report the synergistic effects of a natural anti-cancer agent Jolkinolide B (JB) and mTORi (temsirolimus, rapamycin, and everolimus) for the effective treatment of bladder cancer. A mechanistic study revealed that JB induced a dual inhibition of Akt feedback activation and cytoprotective autophagy, potentiating the anti-proliferative efficacy of mTORi in both PTEN-deficient and cisplatin-resistant bladder cancer cells. Meanwhile, mTORi augmented the pro-apoptotic and pro-paraptotic effects of JB by reinforcing JB-activated endoplasmic reticulum stress and MAPK pathways. These synergistic mechanisms are related to cellular reactive oxygen species accumulation. Our study suggests that dual inhibition of Akt feedback activation and cytoprotective autophagy is an effective strategy in mTORi-based therapy, and JB + mTORi combination associated with multiple anti-cancer mechanisms and good tolerance in mouse models may serve as a promising treatment for bladder cancer.

Background Antimony is widely used in industrial production. The general population may be exposed to long-term low-dose antimony, and there are no studies on antimony and depression symptoms. This study aims to explore the relationships between urinary antimony concentrations and depressive symptoms in adults. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2016 for urinary antimony (N = 8538). Depressive symptoms were assessed through Patient's Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). In order to determine the relationships between urinary antimony concentrations and depressive symptoms, binary logistic regression model and restricted cubic spline were used. Dominance analysis was used to explore the relative importance between variables associated with depressive symptoms. Results There was a significant positive relationship between urinary antimony concentrations and depressive symptoms in the general population, and OR with 95% CI was 1.72 (1.15, 2.60). This relationship also occurred in participants without disease status, and OR with 95% CI was 2.05 (1.10, 3.82). After stratified gender, the urinary antimony concentrations were positively correlated with depressive symptoms in the highest tertiles of female participants, and OR with 95% CI was 1.74 (1.06, 2.86). After adjusted urinary lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury as covariates, the result was still statistically significant, and OR with 95% CI was 1.83 (1.23, 2.72). Restricted cubic spline showed a nonlinear positive relationship between urinary antimony and depressive symptoms. Based on the result of dominance analysis, the relative importance of urinary antimony concentration accounted for 3.58%. Conclusion This study indicated that urinary antimony was positively related to depressive symptoms, especially in female.

Musk, the dried secretion from the musk sac gland which is located between the navel and genitals of mature male musk deer, is utilized as oriental medicine in east Asia. It has been utilized to treat conditions such as stroke, coma, neurasthenia, convulsions, and heart diseases in China since ancient times. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of musk in zoology, chemical composition, pharmacology, clinical applications, and quality control according to the up-to-date literature. Studies found that musk mainly contains macrocyclic ketones, pyridine, steroids, fatty acids, amino acids, peptides, and proteins, whilst the main active ingredient is muscone. Modern pharmacological studies have proven that musk possesses potent anti-inflammatory effects, neuroprotective effects, anti-cancer effects, antioxidant effects, etc. Moreover, muscone, the main active ingredient, possesses anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antioxidant, and other pharmacological effects. In the quality control of musk, muscone is usually the main detection indicator, and the common analytical method is GC, and researchers have established novel and convenient methods such as HPLC-RI, RP-UPLC-ELSD, and Single-Sweep Polarography. In addition, quality evaluation methods based on steroids and the bioactivity of musk have been established. As for the identification of musk, due to various objective factors such as the availability of synthetic Muscone, it is not sufficient to rely on muscone alone as an identification index. To date, some novel technologies have also been introduced into the identification of musk, such as the electronic nose and DNA barcoding technology. In future research, more in vivo experiments and clinical studies are encouraged to fully explain the pharmacological effects and toxicity of musk, and more comprehensive methods are needed to evaluate and control the quality of musk.

In this study, we designed an in situ drug-loaded injectable thermosensitive hydrogel system for the simultaneous delivery of norcantharidin-loaded nanoparticles (NCTD-NPs) and doxorubicin (Dox) via intratumoral administration to HCC tumors.Methods: NCTD-NPs were prepared by the thin film dispersion method using PCEC polymers as the carrier. Then, NCTD-NPs and Dox were co-encapsulated in a thermosensitive hydrogel based on Pluronic F127 (PF127) to construct a dual drug-loaded hydrogel system. The rheological properties of the drug-loaded hydrogel were studied using a rheometer. Drug release of the drug-loaded hydrogel and cytotoxicity in HepG2 cells were evaluated in vitro. An H22 tumor-bearing mice model was used to assess the in vivo antitumor activity of the drug-loaded hydrogel via intratumoral administration.Results: The prepared drug-loaded hydrogel exhibited good thermal-sensitive properties, which remained liquid at room temperature and rapidly transformed into a non-flowing gel at body temperature, and released the drugs in a sustained manner. In vitro studies revealed that the drug-loaded hydrogel exhibited remarkable antiproliferative activity in HepG2 cells compared to free drugs. In vivo antitumor efficacy experiments showed that the drug-loaded hydrogel significantly suppressed tumor growth, alleviated side effects, and prolonged the survival time of mice bearing H22 tumors compared to the other groups. Moreover, immunohistochemical staining revealed that the expression of Ki-67 and CD31 in the drug-loaded hydrogel group was significantly lower than that in the other groups (P < 0.05), indicating that the drug-loaded hydrogel effectively inhibited tumor proliferation and angiogenesis.Conclusion: The formulated hybrid thermosensitive hydrogel system with sustained drug release and enhanced therapeutic efficacy was demonstrated to be a promising strategy for the local-regional treatment of HCC via intratumoral administration.Keywords: Norcantharidin, Doxorubicin, Nanoparticles, Thermosensitive hydrogel, Hepatocellular carcinoma, Intratumoral injection

CdTe semiconductor nanocrystal (NC) solar cells have attracted much attention in recent year due to their low-cost solution fabrication process. However, there are still few reports about the fabrication of large area NC solar cells under ambient conditions. Aiming to push CdTe NC solar cells one step forward to the industry, this study used a novel blade coating technique to fabricate CdTe NC solar cells with different areas (0.16, 0.3, 0.5 cm2) under ambient conditions. By optimizing the deposition parameters of the CdTe NC’s active layer, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of NC solar cells showed a large improvement. Compared to the conventional spin-coated device, a lower post-treatment temperature is required by blade coated NC solar cells. Under the optimal deposition conditions, the NC solar cells with 0.16, 0.3, and 0.5 cm2 areas exhibited PCEs of 3.58, 2.82, and 1.93%, respectively. More importantly, the NC solar cells fabricated via the blading technique showed high stability where almost no efficiency degradation appeared after keeping the devices under ambient conditions for over 18 days. This is promising for low-cost, roll-by-roll, and large area industrial fabrication.

Summary An excess adsorption amount obtained in experiments is always determined by mass balance with a void volume measured by helium (He) –expansion tests. However, He, with a small kinetic diameter, can penetrate into narrow pores in porous media that are inaccessible to adsorbate gases [e.g., methane (CH4)]. Thus, the actual accessible volume for a specific adsorbate is always overestimated by an He–based void volume; such overestimation directly leads to errors in the determination of excess isotherms in the laboratory, such as “negative isotherms” for gas adsorption at high pressures, which further affects an accurate description of total gas in place (GIP) for shale–gas reservoirs. In this work, the mass balance for determining the adsorbed amount is rewritten, and two particular concepts, an “apparent excess adsorption” and an “actual excess adsorption,” are considered. Apparent adsorption is directly determined by an He–based volume, corresponding to the traditional treatment in experimental conditions, whereas actual adsorption is determined by an adsorbate–accessible volume, where pore–wall potential is always nonpositive (i.e., an attractive molecule/pore–wall interaction). Results show the following: The apparent excess isotherm determined by the He–based volume gradually becomes negative at high pressures, but the actual one determined by the adsorbate–accessible volume always remains positive.The negative adsorption phenomenon in the apparent excess isotherm is a result of the overestimation in the adsorbate–accessible volume, and a larger overestimation leads to an earlier appearance of this negative adsorption.The positive amount in the actual excess isotherm indicates that the adsorbed phase is always denser than the bulk gas because of the molecule/pore–wall attraction aiding the compression of the adsorbed molecules. Practically, an overestimation in pore volume (PV) is only 3.74% for our studied sample, but it leads to an underestimation reaching up to 22.1% in the actual excess amount at geologic conditions (i.e., approximately 47 MPa and approximately 384 K). Such an overestimation in PV also underestimates the proportions of the adsorbed–gas amount to the free–gas amount and to the total GIP. Therefore, our present work underlines the importance of a void volume in the determination of adsorption isotherms; moreover, we establish a path for a more–accurate evaluation of gas storage in geologic shale reservoirs with high pressure.

Polyisothianaphthene has the smallest bandgap among all conjugated polymers and delivers high electrical conductivity. This study uses polyisothianaphthene as an active material to accept both lithium ions and PF6− on its cyclic C–S–C bond and benzene ring during the processes of n-doping and p-doping. This study discovers that lithium polysulfide and lithium sulfide are formed during the first electrochemical reaction; however, the impedance, rate performance, and energy density of polyisothianaphthene cells are not affected by those side products. By contrast, an increment of superior rate (10 C) testing is significantly improved by those new sulfur-based solid electrolyte interphase formations compared with transitional anode materials, such as graphite, silicon, and other conjugate polymers. The surface characteristics of the polyisothianaphthene electrode are investigated through in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in operando Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, the reaction mechanisms of n-doping and p-doping on polyisothianaphthene are discussed. The polyisothianaphthene electrode's acceptance of lithium ions exhibits a specific capacity of 730 mAh g−1 at the second cycle as well as of 106 mAh g−1 when it reacts with PF6−. The battery performance exhibits a capacity of approximately 92 mAh g−1 in the bipolar mode. The low-bandgap–conjugated polyisothianaphthene is shown to have high reversibility in terms of bipolar electrochemical reactions, which indicates that it can be a promising bipolar organic material for use in lithium ion batteries.

Conventional Cu/Zn/Al catalysts were modified by the incorporation of cerium (Ce) through co-precipitation method, and were then applied to the catalytic liquefaction of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) in supercritical methanol at 300 °C for 1 h. Catalyst Cu1.2Zn4.8Al1.9Ce0.1 exhibited the best activity, with the MCC conversion of 87.6% and the selectivity of alcohols in liquid products of 88.3% (mainly C4–C7 alcohols), compared with Cu1.2Zn4.8Al2.0 (MCC conversion of 69.62% and alcohol selectivity of 31.37%). The incorporation of CeO2 improved the dispersion of active CuO and its interface interaction with catalyst support, which made the dispersed CuO easier to be reduced at lower temperature, and thus significantly improved catalyst activity and MCC conversion. CeO2 also promoted the performance of the catalyst both in the methanol reforming reaction and the dehydration of intermediates to ketones, which benefited the production of C4–C7 alcohols through the synergism of CeO2 with CuO and ZnO in the Cu-based catalysts. However, excess addition of Ce generated bulk CeO2 crystals on the catalyst surface, which inversely reduced catalyst activity and the production of C4–C7 alcohols.

Chronic alcohol drinking can damage the central nervous system via many mechanisms. One of these may involve a deficiency of an essential nutrient, thiamine, as a result of chronic alcohol exposure. Although thiamine deficiency (TD) has often been linked to the neuropathology of alcohol-related brain damage, the underlying mechanisms remain to be investigated. The crossed High Alcohol Preferring (cHAP) mice prefer alcohol to water when they have free access. In this study, we used cHAP mice to determine the effect of chronic voluntary alcohol exposure on thiamine levels and neuropathological changes in the brain. The male cHAP mice were given free-choice access to 10% ethanol (EtOH) and water for 7 months, sacrificed, and thiamine concentrations in the blood plasma and brain were determined by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The expression of thiamine transporters was examined by immunoblotting. In addition, oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, active caspase-3 dependent apoptosis, and neurogenesis in the brain were evaluated. The results indicated that chronic alcohol exposure decreased thiamine levels and thiamine transporters, and increased oxidative stress, ER stress, and neuronal apoptosis in the brains. Interestingly, alcohol exposure also stimulated neurogenesis in the hippocampus which may serve as a compensatory mechanism in response to alcohol-induced brain damage. Our data have demonstrated that cHAP mice are a useful model to study the interaction between chronic alcohol consumption and TD, as well as TD’s contributions to the neuropathological processes resulting in alcohol-related brain damage.

Jatrogricaine A (1), a new diterpenoid possessing a 5/6/6/4 carbon ring system, together with eight known diterpenoids (2-9) were isolated from the stems of Jatropha podagrica. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic methods and the absolute configuration of 1 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All compounds were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activities in vitro, and compound 3 showed significant inhibitory effects against nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 macrophage cells with an IC50 of 13.44 ± 0.28 μmol·L-1, being comparable to the positive control, quercetin (IC50 17.00 ± 2.10 μmol·L-1).

The graphene oxide (GO) was found to be able to stabilize organic molecules including energetic compounds. However, the inherent mechanisms of such stabilization effects are still not well-known. Herein, various transition metal complexes of triaminoguanidine nitrate (TAGN) using GO as a dopant have been prepared and evaluated. It has been shown that the presence of GO could great improve the thermal stability of the resulted TAG-based complexes. The physical models governing their thermolysis for their initial rate-limiting decomposition steps are obtained using the state-of-the-art evaluation methods. These physical models are further supported by analyses of the overall gaseous products. In addition, the reaction pathways are proposed to explain the stabilization mechanisms of GO. For instance, by interaction of GO, the release of N2 from TAG-Ni was greatly postponed. There is a broad secondary peak at temperature of 378 °C due to decomposition of the nickel nitrides, as the primary thermolysis intermediates of TAG-Ni. The formation of cobalt nitrides plays a significant role on decomposition of TAG-Co and G-T-Co, which results in much less heat release and mass loss in comparison to TAG-Ni.

Postoperative adhesions are the most common complications of peri-abdominal surgery; they not only affect the patient's quality of life but also increase the risk of a subsequent surgery. The use of implantable dressings to physically block surgical wounds is the primary solution to prevent postoperative adhesions. In this study, we prepared naproxen nanoparticles that were loaded with chitosan hydrogel (CS/Nap hydrogel) to prevent postoperative adhesions. Our data confirmed that the prepared CS/Nap hydrogel was thermosensitive and suitable for injection. The efficacy of anti-adhesion in a rat model revealed that the hydrogel effectively separated from the wounds of the abdominal wall and cecum. On day 7 postsurgery, the wounds were completely covered by a new epithelial layer, whereas wounds in the negative control group were glued together. Additionally, the in vivo toxicity study showed that the CS/Nap hydrogel had fewer toxic and side effects on major tissues and organs, including the liver, spleen, heart, lung, and kidney. We showed that a drug delivery system based on CS/Nap hydrogel has the potential not only to prevent postoperative abdominal adhesions and relieve pain but also to contribute to the administration of the hydrophobic drug naproxen.

Crystals of cone-di-formyl-calix[4]arene (16), 1,3-alt-di-O-benzoyl-di-formyl-calix[4]arene (17), 1,3-alt-tetra-O-n-propyl-tetra-formyl-calix[4]arene (18), 1,3-alt-tetra-O-i-propyl-di-formyl-calix[4]arene (19), 1,3-alt-tetra-O-i-propyl-tri-formyl-calix[4]arene (20), 1,3-alt-tetra-O-i-propyl-tetra-cyano-calix[4]arene (21), and pc-A,B-di-O-i-propyl-tetra-formyl-calix[4]arene·1/2CH2Cl2 (22·1/2CH2Cl2) obtained in crystallisation solvent chloroform–hexane have been studied. These crystals form different architectures through some weak intermolecular forces, such as C–H⋯O, C–H⋯π, O⋯π and π⋯π interactions. Compounds 16–18 form classic ‘head-to-head’ dimer or ‘head-to-tail’ dimer motifs by C-H⋯O interactions, while compound 22 forms an ‘up-down’ dimer structure via C–H⋯π interactions. Compounds 19–21 adopting a 1,3-alt conformation are closely packed together by weak intermolecular interactions. The results indicate that weak intermolecular interactions can determine the assembly pathways of calix[4]arene derivatives.

The growth, survival, and non-structural carbohydrate metabolism in Salix triandroides cuttings, cultivated under no flooding, incomplete submergence, or complete submergence conditions (0, 25, and 50 cm of water above the soil surface, respectively), were measured after 50, 80, 110, and 140 days. Both submergence conditions decreased the biomass of the leaf, stem, and root, plant height, root length, and root number. As the duration of the treatments increased, these growth parameters gradually increased for the control and incompletely submerged conditions, but remained relatively constant for the completely submerged condition. The survival ratio was 100% across the experimental period for plants under the control and incompletely submerged conditions; however for plants under the completely submerged condition, it was 100% after 50 and 80 days but decreased to 91.7 and 33.3% after 110 and 140 days, respectively. Compared with the plants under control and incomplete submergence conditions, the completely submerged plants had significantly lower concentrations of soluble sugars and starch. As the concentration of soluble sugars in the completely submerged plants fell to 19.2%, and that of starch to 23.5% of that in the control plants, their survival ratio decreased to 33.3%. The results indicated that the survival of the S. triandroides cuttings grown in complete submergence conditions was associated with non-structural carbohydrate metabolism.

A new, general silver-catalyzed oxidative 1,2-alkyletherification of unactivated olefinic ketones with primary, secondary and tertiary α-bromoalkyl carbonyls promoted by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) and Et3N has been developed. Through the cooperative action of Ag2O, TBHP and Et3N, the reaction enables the construction of highly valuable quaternary-carbon-possessing 2,3-dihydrofuran frameworks using a concomitant intramolecular annulation strategy.
