Multi-component hybrid optical heterojunctions assembled from chromophore-doped polymer microwires are one of the first choices of building blocks for the construction of complex/integrated functional photonic devices, because they not only have the advantages of the individual components (optical confinement from one-dimensional microstructures, high emission efficiency from chromophore and flexibility from polymer matrix), but also bring novel performances to the system by the synergetic interactions between multiple components which cannot be obtained from single components. Herein, we propose a strategy to construct different waveguide heterojunctions through arrangement and combination of two kinds of polymer doped optical microwires via micromanipulation. One of them (MW1) contains carboxyl-fluorescein and photochromic spiropyran which will undergo photoisomerization upon external light stimuli, producing tunable fluorescence (FL) emission for MW1 due to the adjustable fluorescence resonance energy transfer. The other (MW2) is embedded with the dye rhodamine 6G whose FL always remains almost unchanged. Waveguide logic gate, switch and modulator within these heterojunctions can be well realized by changing the external light stimuli and excitation position. Our study indicates that these tunable-emission microwire heterojunctions composed of responsive dye molecules would provide a novel tactic in developing multi-functional advanced waveguides for integrated micro/nanophotonic devices and circuits.

It is still a challenge to realize high mechanical and superior thermal conductive properties simultaneously in one thermal management material. Herein, chemically–physically double cross-linked and stretching orientation strategies were combined to construct a highly ordered cellulose nanofiber network and edge-hydroxylated boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS–OH) structure for fabricating robust cellulose/BNNS–OH composite film with superior thermal conductivity. The aligned regenerated cellulose nanofiber network induced the in-plane orientation of BNNS–OH through covalent and hydrogen bonding interaction. The air-drying densification process was further applied to construct a tightly packed structure for achieving a high tensile strength (226 MPa) and in-plane thermal conductivity (TC, 20.41 W m−1 K−1), which was almost 30 times higher than the through-plane TC (0.69 W m−1 K−1), indicating anisotropic TC properties. The flexible and robust composite film exhibited not only fast heat dissipation for cooling communication devices, but also superior oxygen barrier properties and signal penetration, showing its great potential in communication devices encapsulation. It also provides a novel avenue for preparing highly oriented one-dimensional and two-dimensional composite materials.

Background Long noncoding RNA NEAT1 has been implicated in glioma progression. However, the effect of NEAT1 on glycolysis of glioma cell and the potential mechanism remain unclear. Methods In vitro experiments, including CCK-8, colony formation, ECAR, and lactate detection assays were performed to evaluate the effect of NEAT1 on proliferation and glycolysis of glioma cell. RNA pulldown and RIP assays were performed to identify the interaction between NEAT1 and PGK1. Truncated mutation of NEAT1 and PGK1 was used to confirm the specific interactive domains between NEAT1 and PGK1. Animal studies were performed to analyze the effect of NEAT1/PGK1 on glioma progression. Results NEAT1 knockdown significantly suppressed the proliferation and glycolysis of glioma cells. NEAT1 could specifically interact with PGK1, which promotes PGK1 stability. Hairpin A of NEAT1 is essential for interaction with M1 domain of PGK1. Depletion of NEAT1 markedly inhibited tumor growth in mice, while PGK1 could reverse this effect. Higher expression of NEAT1 was associated with poor overall survival of GBM patients. Conclusions NEAT1 over expression promotes glioma progression through stabilizing PGK1. NEAT1/PGK1 axis is a candidate therapeutic target for glioma treatment.

The upgrading of tar is a key issue for the sufficient application of biowaste pyrolysis technology. Molten salt, with high migration and diffusion of ions to prevent the deactivation of coke deposition of tar reforming functional metals, is considered as a feasible catalytic reaction medium and heat carrier for the upgrading of tar. The present study investigated the interactions between small molecular pyrolysis gases (including H2, CO, CH4) and main tar model compound in ternary carbonate eutectics (Li2CO3–Na2CO3–K2CO3). The results demonstrated that H2 could be decomposed to produce H radicals, promoting the conversion of toluene into gaseous products. CO32− could consume H radicals required by toluene cracking, making the process toluene polymerized to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons be strengthened. On the other hand, CO would react with OH radicals to produce H radicals and could enhance gas-generating process. In addition, toluene could react with CO to form benzaldehyde and phenylacetaldehyde. With the addition of CH4, more H radicals were supposed to be consumed, and toluene cracking process was further inhibited. Finally, the effect sequence of small molecular gases (H2 > CH4 > CO) on toluene reforming reaction was authenticated by investigating the impacts of introducing any two gases in toluene reforming.

Co-pyrolysis of biomass with oxygen-lean polymer waste is a promising way to improve both quantity and quality of the derived oil. However, the release of sulfur contaminants causes serious adverse effects on the utilization of the derived oil. In order to promote the efficient and economic utilization of the derived products, the high-temperature desulfurization was conducted in this study using a ternary molten carbonates (Li2CO3–Na2CO3–K2CO3). And the effects of added Ca2+ or Cl−/SO42− on the desulfurization were estimated. The results demonstrated that the molten carbonates showed high efficiency in the removal of H2S/COS/SO2 at 500 °C. Alkali metals competitively reacted with H2S/COS to form various sulfides and sulfur species in the cooled products were probably determined by the crystallization processes. Besides, H2S removal was stimulated by adding CaCO3 and the formed CaS was precipitated from the molten salts. The addition of Cl−/SO42− changed the ion distribution characteristics of the molten salts and had slightly adverse effects on the removal of H2S. In contrast, SO2 removal was hardly affected while COS removal efficiency was decreased after adding Ca2+ or Cl−/SO42−. Anyway, the added Ca2+ favored the recovery of sulfur as well as the regeneration of spent molten carbonates.

We have demonstrated the realization of a coherent vesicle random lasing (VRL) from the dye doped azobenzene polymer vesicles self-assembled in the tetrahydrofuran-water system, which contains a double-walled structure: a hydrophilic and hydrophobic part. The effect of the dye and azobenzene polymer concentration on the threshold of random laser has been researched. The threshold of random laser decreases with an increase in the concentration of the pyrromethene 597 (PM597) laser and azobenzene polymer. Moreover, the scattering of small size group vesicles is attributed to providing a loop to boost the coherent random laser through the Fourier transform analysis. Due to the vesicles having the similar structure with the cell, the generation of coherent random lasers from vesicles expand random lasers to the biomedicine filed.

Chitin is found in the exoskeleton and peritrophic matrix of arthropods, but recent studies have also identified chitin in the spinning duct of silk-spinning arthropods. Here, we report the presence and function of chitin and cuticle proteins ASSCP1 and ASSCP2 in the spinning duct of silkworms. We show that chitin and these proteins are co-located in the cuticular layer of the spinning duct. Ultrastructural analysis indicates that the cuticular layer has a multilayer structure by layered stacking of the chitin laminae. After knocking down ASSCP1 and ASSCP2, the fine structure of this layer was disrupted, which had negative impacts on the mechanical properties of silk. This work clarifies the function of chitin in the spinning duct of silk-spinning arthropods. Chitin and cuticle proteins are the main components of the hard and rigid cuticular layer, providing the shearing stress during silk fibrillogenesis and regulating the final mechanical properties of silk.

Sorafenib is the important first-standard drug for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A major obstacle to successful treatment is sorafenib resistance. However, the mechanism of sorafenib resistance is unclear. The present study aimed to determine the involvement of dipeptidyl peptidase-8 (DPP8) in sorafenib resistance. DPP8 expression was detected using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and western blot analysis. The effect of DPP8 on sorafenib resistance was examined using terminal deoxynulceotidyl transferase nick-end-labeling (TUNEL), colony formation, flow cytometry, luciferase reporter, immunofluorescence, and immunoprecipitation (IP) assays. We found that DPP8 mRNA and protein levels were dramatically upregulated in HCC. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) illustrated that DPP8 might be involved in apoptosis regulation. Downregulation of DPP8 substantially promoted the sensitivity of HCC cells to sorafenib. Further analysis showed that DPP8 might regulate nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling, which was confirmed using a luciferase reporter assay. Downregulation of DPP8 decreased the expression levels of downstream genes of the NF-κB pathway. IP showed that DPP8 can interact with NF-κB subunit c-Rel, an important protein of NF-κB signaling. Finally, a drug combination of sorafenib and Val-boroPro induced higher mortality of HCC cells than sorafenib alone in DPP8-upregulated cells. Our findings indicated that using the inhibitor Val-boroPro might be a promising method to enhance sorafenib sensitivity in advanced HCC.

With the development of the refining industry, the treatment of refinery wastewater has become an urgent problem. In this study, a ceramic membrane (CM) was combined with Fenton-activated carbon (AC) adsorption to dispose of refinery wastewater. The effect of the combined process was analyzed using excitation–emission matrix (EEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies (FTIR). Compared with direct filtration, the combined process could significantly improve the removal of organic pollution, where the removal rate of the COD and TOC could be 70% and the turbidity removal rate was above 97%. It was found that the effluent could meet the local standards. In this study, the membrane fouling was analyzed for the impact of the pretreatment on the membrane direction. The results showed that Fenton-AC absorption could effectively alleviate membrane fouling. The optimal critical flux of the combined process was increased from 60 to 82 L/(m2·h) compared with direct filtration. After running for about 20 d, the flux remained at about 55 L/(m2·h) and the membrane-fouling resistance was only 1.2 × 1012 m−1. The Hermia model revealed that cake filtration was present in the early stages of the combined process. These results could be of great use in improving the treatment efficiency and operation cycle of refinery wastewater.

Complexes 1-3, C34H36X4CuN2O2 (X = Cl, Br, I), were synthesized with copper chloride dihydrate and three new Schiff base ligands derived from amantadine and 3,5-dihalosalicylaldehydes. They were characterized by IR, UV–VIS, elemental analysis, molar conductance, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that 1 and 2 crystallize in the triclinic system, Pī space group. Each asymmetric unit consists of one copper(II) ion, two corresponding deprotonated Schiff base ligands and one lattice dichloromethane molecule. 3 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, P21/n space group. Each asymmetric unit consists of one copper(II) ion and two deprotonated iodo- Schiff base ligands. The tetra-coordination of the central copper(II) ion in 1-3 is constructed by two nitrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms from the corresponding Schiff base ligands, forming a distorted tetrahedral geometry. Electrochemical properties of the complexes were determined by cyclic voltammetry.

Exogenous metabolites from microbial and dietary origins have profound effects on host metabolism. Here, we report that a sub-population of lipid droplets (LDs), which are conserved organelles for fat storage, is defined by metabolite-modulated targeting of the C. elegans seipin ortholog, SEIP-1. Loss of SEIP-1 function reduces the size of a subset of LDs while over-expression of SEIP-1 has the opposite effect. Ultrastructural analysis reveals SEIP-1 enrichment in an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) subdomain, which co-purifies with LDs. Analyses of C. elegans and bacterial genetic mutants indicate a requirement of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and microbial cyclopropane fatty acids (CFAs) for SEIP-1 enrichment, as confirmed by dietary supplementation experiments. In mammalian cells, heterologously expressed SEIP-1 engages nascent lipid droplets and promotes their subsequent expansion in a conserved manner. Our results suggest that microbial and polyunsaturated fatty acids serve unexpected roles in regulating cellular fat storage by promoting LD diversity., Lipid droplets (LDs) are fat storage organelles that are initiated and expanded by seipins at ER contact sites. Here the authors show that the C. elegans seipin ortholog SEIP-1 is recruited to these sites by certain dietary fatty acids to support the expansion of a subset of LDs.

The catalytic subunit p110δ of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) encoded by PIK3CD has been implicated in some human solid tumors. However, its roles in colorectal cancer (CRC) remain largely unknown. Here we found that PIK3CD was overexpressed in colon cancer tissues and CRC cell lines and was an independent predictor for overall survival (OS) of patients with colon cancer. The ectopic overexpression of PIK3CD significantly promoted CRC cell growth, migration and invasion in vitro and tumor growth in vivo. In contrast, inhibition of PIK3CD by specific small-interfering RNA or idelalisib dramatically suppressed CRC cell growth, migration and invasion in vitro and tumor growth in vivo. Moreover, PIK3CD overexpression increased AKT activity, nuclear translocation of β-catenin and T-cell factor/lymphoid enhancer factor (TCF/LEF) transcriptional activity and decreased glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β) activity, whereas PIK3CD inhibition exhibited the opposite effects. Furthermore, PIK3CD-mediated cell growth, migration and invasion were reversed by blockade of AKT signaling or depletion of β-catenin. In addition, PIK3CD expression in colon cancer tissues positively correlated with β-catenin abnormal expression, which was an independent predictor for OS of colon cancer patients. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that PIK3CD is an independent prognostic factor in CRC and that PIK3CD induces CRC cell growth, migration and invasion by activating AKT/GSK-3β/β-catenin signaling, suggesting that PIK3CD might be a novel prognostic biomarker and a potential therapeutic target for CRC.

The release of arsenic vapors (As3+) during high-arsenic coal combustion not only raises serious environmental concerns, but also causes catalyst deactivation in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems. To illuminate the mechanisms involved in the transformation of arsenic vapors towards less troublesome arsenates (As5+) during coal combustion, the accessory minerals in the high-arsenic coal were identified and the association relationship of these compounds with arsenic in fly ash was estimated. The results showed that Si/Al were the main inorganic elements in high-arsenic coal while the content of Ca was quite low. Ca was mostly transformed into sulfates during coal combustion and the effect of Ca on the arsenic transformation was limited. Al/Fe played a more significant role in arsenic speciation transformation and arsenic in the fly ash was predominantly bound with Al/Fe-oxides as arsenates. It was further confirmed that Al in kaolin/metakaolin showed good capacity on arsenic capture. In addition, few arsenic vapors were captured through the physical adsorption mechanism and the large fraction of As3+ in some fine particles was mostly attributed to the chemical reactions between arsenic vapors and Al-compounds. Meanwhile, a certain amount of arsenic vapors were converted into As2O5(s) under the influence of SCR catalyst and then carried by flue gas to participate in fly ash. Besides, part of arsenic distributed in the fly ash was through the stabilization of ash matrix in high temperature conditions. The transformation of arsenic from vapors towards particulate arsenic favored arsenic emission control by particulate matter control devices.

A dearomative remote activation strategy for the asymmetric functionalization of benzylic C-H bonds of heteroaryl aldehydes under bifunctional Brønsted base catalysis has been developed. The in situ generated o-QDMs-type dienolate intermediates were efficiently and stereoselectively trapped by nitroolefins through an asymmetric Michael/nitro-aldol cascade reaction. Using this strategy, a wide variety of synthetically significant tetrahydrodibenzothiophene and tetrahydrodibenzofuran derivatives were synthesized in good yields with high enantioselectivities.

FAS-associated protein with death domain (FADD) is the pivotal adaptor protein, which transmits apoptotic signals mediated by the death receptors. Here we report that high FADD protein level predicts poor prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients and its protein level is mainly regulated by the 26S proteasome. We also found that ubiquitin ligase SPOP (speckle-type POZ protein) binds to FADD and mediates its degradation, which can be blocked by MG132 treatment. Notably, SPOP inhibits NF-κB (nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells) activity and its target genes expression via FADD. These results reveal the function of SPOP-FADDNFκB axis in NSCLC cells, which is associated with prognosis of NSCLC patients.

Over the past decade, great progress in sequencing technologies and computational biology has revealed that the majority of the mammalian genome considered to be noncoding is rich in functional elements able to produce proteins. Many RNA molecules, mis-annotated as noncoding, actually harbor small open reading frames that are predicted to code for proteins. Some of those proteins have been verified to play critical roles in multiple biological processes. The lipid droplet (LD) is a unique cellular organelle, conserved from bacteria to humans, and is closely associated with cellular lipid metabolism and metabolic disorders. No noncoding RNA-coded proteins have been identified on LDs. Here, for the first time, we searched the organelle for their presence. After the enrichment of small proteins of LDs isolated from myoblasts, we used mass spectrometry coupled with our lab made protein database to identify LD-associated noncoding RNA-encoded proteins (LDANPs). A total of 15 new proteins were identified. One of them was studied further and termed LDANP1. LDANP1 was localized on LDs by imaging, cell fractionation, and immunogold labeling. Like LD resident proteins, LDANP1 was degraded by the proteasome. Using the CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing technique, the endogenous expression of LDANP1 was validated. The stable expression of LDANP1 suppressed the accumulation of triacylglycerol in oleic acid treated myoblasts and inhibited the rescue of palmitate-inhibited insulin sensitivity by oleic acid. In summary, we report for the first time that translatable, nominally noncoding RNA-derived proteins, which are new and cannot be identified using current research methods, were associated with LDs and that among these, LDANP1 modulated lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity. The discovery of noncoding RNA-encoded proteins on LDs paves a new way for the research of LDs and lipid metabolism.

Ectopic lipid accumulation in lipid droplets (LD) has been linked to many metabolic diseases. In this study, DHS-3::GFP was used as a LD marker in C. elegans and a forward genetic screen was carried out to find novel LD regulators. There were 140 mutant alleles identified which were divided into four phenotypic categories: enlarged, aggregated, aggregated and small, and decreased. After genetic mapping, mutations in three known LD regulatory genes (maoc-1, dhs-28, daf-22) and a peroxisome-related gene (acox-3) were found to enlarge LDs, demonstrating the reliability of using DHS-3 as a living marker. In the screen, the cytoskeleton protein C27H5.2 was found to be involved in LD aggregation, as was the LD resident/structure-like protein, MDT-28/PLIN-1. Using yeast two-hybrid screening and pull-down assays, MDT-28/PLIN-1 was found to bind to DLC-1 (dynein light chain). Fluorescence imaging confirmed that MDT-28/PLIN-1 mediated the interaction between DHS-3 labeled LDs and DLC-1 labeled microtubules. Furthermore, MDT-28/PLIN-1 was directly bound to DLC-1 through its amino acids 1–210 and 275–415. Taken together, our results suggest that MDT-28/PLIN-1 is involved in the regulation of LD distribution through its interaction with microtubule-related proteins.

Molten salt gasification is a promising way for collaborative use of solar energy and Zhundong coal, with in situ capture of Cl/S-pollutants as well as alkali metals. The present study provides a deep insight into carbon conversion during molten salt gasification of a typical Zhundong coal in ternary carbonate eutectics (Li2CO3-Na2CO3-K2CO3). The results demonstrated that the molten salt gasification of Zhundong coal underwent a rapid devolatilization of raw coal and then the gasification of char. The interactions between CO2 and volatiles promoted the cracking of macromolecular compounds, increasing the carbon conversion efficiency during the devolatilization process. The gasification of char was mainly determined by the direct reaction with molten salt, which was slightly affected by the CO2 concentration in the carrier gas. The results of char characterization evidenced that the condensation/graphitization of char was stimulated in the molten eutectics. Meanwhile, a large amount of O-containing groups, especially carbonyl groups, were formed in the molten salt treated char with carbonates as oxygen supplier. Under the influence of molten salts, some carbonyl groups would be formed inside the char. However, the decomposition of those carbonyl groups was suppressed by the mass transfer resistance of the released CO and/or CO2. Applying proper feeding mode, such as feeding coal in pulverized form, could enhance the contact of coal, molten salt and CO2, which remarkably promoted the interactions between molten salts and char containing functional groups.

In recent years, potassium ion batteries (PIBs) with capacitor-like rate performance and battery-like capacity are highly desirable. To this aim, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are studied in this work to evaluate the feasibility of employing LDHs as anode materials for PIBs. Our results show MgFe-LDH that contains trivalent iron cations with variable valence states can deliver K+-storage capacity of 371.6 mAh g–1 after running for 300 cycles at 0.1 A g–1 with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 88.4%. In contrast, MgAl-LDH that represents LDHs excluding multivalent metal elements merely delivers a capacity of 195.3 mAh g-1 under the same test condition but with a much higher initial Coulombic efficiency of 99.4%. Further study shows an electrical double layer effect is dominant to storing K+ for MgAl-LDH anode, while a faradaic process involving a conversion reaction between Fe3+ and Fe2+ is prevalent in MgFe-LDH anode. Rate performance of the MgFe-LDH/K cell shows its capacity retentions at 1, 2, 5, 10 A g–1 are 60.9%, 51.3%, 42.9%, 39.5%, respectively, which exhibit cause-effect relationships with its intrinsic poor conductivity and a non-efficient grinding event at high current densities. Besides, by measuring EIS spectra at different temperatures, the apparent activation energy is calculated to be 79.5 kJ mol–1. It is thus anticipated that this study will shed new light on developing LDHs as powerful anode materials for PIBs.

This study investigates the degradation of nifedipine (NIF) by using a novel and highly efficient ultraviolet light combined with hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2). The degradation rate and degradation kinetics of NIF first increased and then remained constant as the H2O2 dose increased, and the quasi-percolation threshold was an H2O2 dose of 0.378 mmol/L. An increase in the initial pH and divalent anions (SO42- and CO32-) resulted in a linear decrease of NIF (the R2 of the initial pH, SO42- and CO32- was 0.6884, 0.9939 and 0.8589, respectively). The effect of monovalent anions was complex; Cl- and NO3- had opposite effects: low Cl- or high NO3- promoted degradation, and high Cl- or low NO3- inhibited the degradation of NIF. The degradation rate and kinetics constant of NIF via UV/H2O2 were 99.94% and 1.45569 min-1, respectively, and the NIF concentration = 5 mg/L, pH = 7, the H2O2 dose = 0.52 mmol/L, T = 20 ℃ and the reaction time = 5 min. The ·OH was the primary key reactive oxygen species (ROS) and ·O2- was the secondary key ROS. There were 11 intermediate products (P345, P329, P329-2, P315, P301, P274, P271, P241, P200, P181 and P158) and 2 degradation pathways (dehydrogenation of NIF → P345 → P274 and dehydration of NIF → P329 → P315).

Assimilatory and dissimilatory sulfate reduction (ASR and DSR) are the core bacterial sulfate-reducing pathways involved in wastewater treatment. It has been reported that sulfate-reducing activities could happen within biofoulants of membrane bioreactors during wastewater treatment. Biofoulants are mainly microbial products contributing membrane fouling and subsequent rising energy consumption in driving membrane filtration. Biofoulants from a full-scale biofilm-membrane bioreactor (biofilm-MBR) treating textile wastewater were investigated in this study. During a 10-month operation, sulfate concentrations in the effluent of the biofilm-MBR gradually decreased alongside with the creeping up sulfite concentrations when biofoulants were also building up on membrane modules. Sulfide had no apparent increases in the effluent during this period. Metagenomic analysis revealed diverse microbial communities residing in the biofoulants. Further analysis on their genetic traits revealed abundant ASR's and DSR's functional genes. A plethora of sulfate-reduction bacteria (SRB), including the well-known Desulfovibrio, Desulfainum, Desulfobacca, Desulfobulbus, Desulfococcus, Desulfonema, Desulfosarcina, Desulfobacter, Desulfobacula, Desulfofaba, Desulfotigum, Desulfatibacillum, Desulfatitalea, Desulfobacterium, were detected in the biofoulants. They were believed to play some important carbon and sulfur-cycling roles in our study. Based on metagenomic analysis, we also deduced that ASR was a functionally more important sulfate-reducing route because of the high abundance of assimilatory sulfate reductases detected. Also, the "AMP (adenosine monophosphate)→sulfite" step was a key reaction shared by both ASR and DSR in the biofoulant. This step might be responsible for the sulfite accumulation in the biofilm-MBR effluent. Overall, ASR functional genes in the biofoulants were more abundant. But the bacteria possessing complete DSR pathways caused the sulfide production in the biofilm-MBR.

Tissue engineering scaffolds provide an encouraging alternative for nerve injuries due to their biological support for nerve cell growth, which can be used for neuronal repair. Nerve cells have been reported to be mostly cultured on 2D scaffolds that cannot mimic the native extracellular matrix. Herein, highly ordered 3D scaffolds are fabricated for nerve cell culture by melt electrospinning writing, the microstructures and geometries of the scaffolds could be well modulated. An effective strategy for scaffold surface modification to promote nerve cell growth is proposed. The effects of scaffolds with different surface modifications, viz., plasma treatment, single poly-D-lysine (PDL) coating after plasma treatment, single laminin (LM) coating after plasma treatment, double PDL and LM coatings after plasma treatment, on PC12 cell growth are evaluated. Experiments show the scaffold modified with double PDL and LM coatings after plasma treatment facilitated the growth of PC12 cells most effectively, indicating the synergistic effect of PDL and LM on the growth of nerve cells. This is the first systematic and quantitative study of the effects of different scaffold surface modifications on nerve cell growth. The above results provide a versatile culture platform for growing nerve cells, and for recovery from peripheral nerve injury.

Magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) crystallization could be utilized for the recovery of phosphorus from wastewater. However, the effectiveness of the recovery is largely determined by the crystallization process, which is very hard to be directly observed. As a result, a specific ultrasonic device was designed to investigate the crystallization characteristics of MAP under various ultrasonic conditions. The results demonstrated that the metastable zone width (MZW) narrowed along with the rising of the ultrasonic power. Similarly, for the 6mM MAP solution, with the ultrasonic power gradually enhanced from 0W to 400W, the induction time was shortened from 340s to 38s. Meanwhile, the crystallization rate was accelerated till the power reached 350W, and then remained a constant value. It can be observed from the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the MAP crystal became bigger in size as well as the crystal size distribution (CSD) became broad and uneven, with the increase of ultrasonic power. The results indicate that the crystallization process enhanced by power ultrasound could be used as an effective method to eliminate and recover the phosphorus from wastewater.

A highly regioselective DBU-catalyzed [3 + 2] annulation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman carbonates with isothiocyanates was developed. This method allows rapid and efficient synthesis of spirocyclic oxindole dihydrothiophene products in moderate to high yields with excellent regioselectivities under simple conditions. A plausible reaction mechanism is also proposed.

Thermal treatment could effectively realize the detoxification of heavy metals in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash through the approach of removal or stabilization process. To lower the operating temperature and suppress the evaporation of heavy metals, a molten salts (NaCl-CaCl2) thermal treatment method was proposed for the detoxification of heavy metals from MSWI fly ash at a relatively mild condition (600/800 °C). The fate of heavy metals during the heating process and their stabilization properties in the remained ash slag after molten salts thermal treatment were investigated. The results showed that, compared with the traditional thermal treatment, heavy metals were more easily chlorinated by the means of molten salts thermal treatment. The well distributed chloride in molten salts facilitated the direct chlorination of PbO/CdO. Furthermore, Al2O3 in ash enhanced the indirect chlorination of CuO/PbO/CdO, except for ZnO. In contrast, SiO2 showed better performance in promoting the indirect chlorination of heavy metal oxides. Meanwhile, some Zn2+ was precipitated from molten salts as Si/Al-Zn composite oxides through the interactions with ash containing Si/Al oxides. On the other hand, the dissolved heavy metals in molten salts showed a good thermal stability during the thermal treatment. The volatilization fractions of all detected heavy metals were less than 5%. After the molten salts thermal treatment, heavy metals in the ash slag were well stabilized and the amount of heavy metals leached was significantly lower than that from the raw fly ash.

A laboratory-scale biological aerated filter (BAF), using volcanic scoria particles (VSP), was used for treating micro-polluted source water. The system reached a steady-state stage and performed better at removing pollutants. In steady-state stage, the effluent ammonia ( NH4+-N ) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were consistently maintained below 0.3 and 3 mg/L, respectively. Both the NH4+-N and COD removal efficiencies decreased with shorter hydraulic retention time (HRT). The effluent NH4+-N and COD exceeded health standards at 15 min of HRT. Although performance was relatively poor for VSP-BAF at low temperature, the NH4+-N removal still achieved the drinking water quality standard. The influences of influent NH4+-N and COD concentration changes were similar to that of temperature. A better performance was observed in NH4+-N removal under higher influent NH4+-N concentrations. In contrast, the effluent COD was more than 3 mg/L when the influent COD concentrations increased to about 9 mg/L. The phylogenetic and cluster analyses indicated that the effect of HRT on bacteria community structure was higher than that of temperature, while the ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) are sensitive to temperature. The main phyla identified in total bacteria communities were Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Nitrospirae. The main AOB were Nitrosomonadales and an uncultured ammonia-oxidizing bacterium. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The BAF using VSP obtained a good performance for treating micro-polluted source water. The influence of HRT on the system was more significant than that of temperature. The system is resistant to NH4+-N concentration shocks while is unable to withstand the COD increasing. The effect of HRT on bacteria community structure was significantly higher than that of temperature.

N2O (Nitrous oxide) is a strong greenhouse gas, and wastewater treatment process is one of the important artificial sources of N2O. Controlling N2O production and discharge in wastewater treatment process is beneficial to alleviate the greenhouse effect. Based on the mechanism of N2O production in biological nitrogen removal process, emission characteristics and influencing factors of N2O in three traditional biological nitrogen removal processes, A/A/O, SBR and oxidation ditch, and two new biological nitrogen removal processes, SBBR and CANON, have been reviewed. Furthermore, a control strategy for slowing the generation and release of N2O is proposed, which provides a reference for researchers in related field.

Exogenous metabolites from microbial and dietary origins have profound effects on host metabolism. Here, we report that a sub-population of lipid droplets (LDs), which are conserved organelles for fat storage, is defined by metabolites-driven targeting of theC. elegansseipin ortholog, SEIP-1. Loss of SEIP-1 function reduced the size of a subset of LDs while over-expression of SEIP-1 had the opposite effect. Ultrastructural analysis revealed SEIP-1 enrichment in an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) subdomain, which co-purified with LDs. Analyses ofC. elegansand bacterial genetic mutants indicated a requirement of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and microbial cyclopropane fatty acids (CFAs) for SEIP-1 enrichment, as confirmed by dietary supplementation experiments. In mammalian cells, heterologous expression of SEIP-1 promoted lipid droplet expansion from ER subdomains in a conserved manner. Our results suggest that microbial and polyunsaturated fatty acids serve unexpected roles in regulating cellular fat storage by enforcing LD diversity.

The low-temperature alkali/urea aqueous system has received wide public attention since it is a better method to reduce pollution by preparing the regenerated cellulose fiber through the green dissolution system. Since molecular weight has a significant impact on the solubility and mechanical property of regenerated cellulose fiber; thus, we designed this experiment that cellulose materials with molecular weight ranging between 6.8 × 104 to 13.5 × 104 were employed for wet-spinning in alkali/urea aqueous system. It is found that as molecular weight of cellulose increases, cellulose solution decreases in solubility but cellulose molecular chain aggregates increase. However, bath the stability and viscosity of cellulose solutions almost remain unchanged with the change of molecular weight. As for the spun fibers, it is found that the orientation and crystallinity are relatively high when the molecular weight is low (6.8 × 104–9 × 104). These are excellent mechanical properties However, unlike conventional polymers, when molecular weight further increases to 9 × 104–13.5 × 104, the degree of orientation and crystallinity gradually decreases. This is due to a large number of entanglements between adjacent molecular chains, thereby hindering the molecular chain orientation along with reduced mechanical property. Our work demonstrates that the considerable molecular weight of cellulose is neither good for dissolution nor spun fibers' mechanical property. The choice of cellulose with relatively low molecular weight is essential not only for the excellent dissolution but also for fiber property.

This work systematically illustrated the effects of solvents on random lasing in active scatterer solution systems. The scatterer, N,N′-di[3-(isobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes)propyl]perylene diimide (DPP), was chemically synthesized from gain group perylene diimide (PDI) and scattering group polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) at a mole ratio of 1:2 through chemical bonding. Random lasing action was detected in such solutions with a series of solvents ordered by refractive index (RI), from which it was found that solution systems with larger RI solvent facilitate boosting of random laser (RL) for a suitable “Δl = ls − lg” (ls > lg). There are two potential situations for solvents with smaller RI: in one, a small RI difference between scatterers and surroundings results in extremely large ls, and the extremely large Δl in these samples means that there is no observation of random lasing; in the other, there is increased lg as characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, although the ls remains almost unchanged for the large RI fluctuations between scatterers and surroundings, resulting in smaller Δl with no detection of random lasing as the laser pumping energy cannot compensate for the gain loss. Results from this work will aid in quantitatively judging the necessary condition of “Δl = ls − lg” to RL in solutions, and aid in designing suitable solution systems to boost RL.

Nano-scale aggregates of hybrid molecules, such as N,N′-di-[3-(isobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes)propyl] perylene diimide (DPP) which is composed of perylene diimide (PDI) as gain group and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) as scattering group at a mole ratio of 1:2, are formed in carbon disulfide (CS2) solution within a concentration range from 3 × 10−5 M to 10−3 M. The aggregation of DPP in the solution was characterized using ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) and fluorescence spectroscopy. Under pumping of a 532 nm pulse laser, coherent random laser (RL) is produced from the aggregates in CS2 solution with a threshold of 17.4 μJ and a Q value of 2440 at a DPP concentration of 10−4 M. Enhanced near zone scattering by aggregation is thought to boost coherent RL. This research not only extends the RL system to the extremely weak scattering regime but also provides a new direction for research on nano-scale materials for lasers using molecular design.

Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is a kind of reputable and prospective technology for wastewater treatment and reformation applications. However, membrane fouling caused by the formation of biofilm on the membrane surface, especially biofouling, is a major obstacle that limits the energy-saving operation and maintenance of the membrane bioreactor (MBR). Microbial communication (known as Quorum Sensing (QS)) is the cause of this fouling phenomenon. A new strategy called Quorum Quenching (QQ) seems to have been successfully used for biological pollution control in wastewater treatment MBR. This review summarizes the latest findings regarding membrane fouling, QS mechanisms and QQ applications. We discussed the opportunities for further practical application of self-cleaning engineering QQ bacteria in MBR.

Arsenic is easily volatilized as vapors during coal combustion and predominantly transferred into particulate forms. The removal of particulate arsenic together with fine fly ash particles is essential to control arsenic emission during coal combustion. In this study, fly ashes and different size fraction samples (PM2.5, PM10, and PM20) were collected or prepared from four Chinese coal-fired power plants, with objectives of studying the arsenic distribution and speciation in fly ash, and understanding the retention relationship between the removal of ash particles and particulate arsenic. The results demonstrated that the concentration of arsenic of the first two ESP (electrostatic precipitator) hoppers was at similar level, then followed by a substantial increase in the rear hoppers. And the particle size distribution of fine fly ash particles from various ESP systems presented essentially similar trend. Furthermore, particulate arsenic was mainly present as arsenates probably through the interactions between arsenic vapors and accessory Ca/Fe/Al-minerals. Arsenic associated with calcium compounds tended to be enriched in coarse particles, while arsenic bound with Fe/Al-compounds was enriched in fine particles. Meanwhile, arsenic associated with calcium sulfate compounds was easier to be captured by ESP compared to calcium silicate-bound arsenic. The interactions between arsenic vapors and various accessory minerals not only affected the size distribution characteristics of particulate arsenic, but also had a great effect on its removal efficiency of ESP. Specifically, based on the ash resistivity calculation, arsenic-bearing fine particles with certain amount of Fe had suitable conductivity and favored the capture of particulate arsenic by ESP.

Under anaerobic low carbon source, the reactor was started-up by inoculating anaerobic sludge. The nitrogen removal efficiency and nitrogen conversion pathway during the start-up process were analyzed. At the same time, the structure succession of bacteria in the process of start-up was analyzed by PCR-DGGE technology from molecular biology level. The results showed that inoculated anaerobic sludge had a good effect on nitrogen removal under the condition of anaerobic low carbon source.

Studies on the following were reviewed: (1) the structure of spiropyrans and spirooxazines (two kinds of spiro compounds) under external stimuli and (2) the construction and applications of composite systems based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) with fluorescent materials. When treated with different stimuli (light, acids and bases, solvents, metal ions, temperature, redox potential, and so on), spiropyrans/spirooxazines undergo transformations between the ring-closed form (SP), the ring-opened merocyanine (MC) form, and the protonated ring-opened form (MCH). This is due to the breakage of the spiro C–O bond and the protonation of MC, along with a color change. Various novel, multifunctional materials based on photochromic spiropyrans and spirooxazines have been successfully developed because of the vastly differently physiochemical properties posssed by the SP, MC and MCH forms. Among the three different structural forms, the MC form has been studied most extensively. The MC form not only gives complexes with various inorganic particles, biological molecules, and organic chemicals but also acts as the energy acceptor (of energy from fluorescent molecules) during energy transfer processes that take place under proper conditions. Furthermore, spiropyran and spirooxazine compounds exhibit reversible physicochemical property changes under proper stimuli; this provides more advantages compared with other photochromic compounds. Additionally, the molecular structures of spiropyrans and spirooxazines can be easily modified and extended, so better compounds can be obtained to expand the scope of already known applications. Described in detail are: (1) the structural properties of spiropyrans and spirooxazines and related photochromic mechanisms; (2) composite systems based on spiropyrans and spirooxazines, and (3) fluorescent materials which have potential applications in sensing, probing, and a variety of optical elements.

In this study, the variation of Zeta potentials and distribution of molecular weight in Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP) were investigated. It is indicated that the salinity is effect on Zeta potentials significantly. When the salinity increased from 0 g/L to 35 g/L, the Zeta potentials decreased gradually. The average molecular weight is mainly over 30 KDa in EPS and SMP at 0 g/L salinity, and is mainly below 10 KDa at 10 g/L and 35 g/L salinity. This result is evident that the variation of molecular weight is contributed to high salinity.

In this study, high salinity wastewater was treated by an intermittently aerated membrane bioreactor (IAMBR) and the salinity loadings were set at 35g/L. The activated sludge was inoculated from the municipal wastewater treatment plant. The influent salinity level gradually increased from 0 to 35 g/L with every 5 g/L. With the salt concentration increased to 35 g/L, the performance of IAMBR was significantly affected by higher salinity. The removal efficiencies of the total organic carbon (TOC), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and total nitrogen (TN) were about 83%, 70% and 51%, respectively. It is indicated that the domestication of activated sludge from municipal wastewater treatment cannot obtain a better performance at high salinity.

The performance of biological aerated filter (BAF) with lava media for the treatment of micro-polluted source water was investigated with the operational temperature 18°C, the PH value 6.29-8.35, hydraulic retention time (HRT) 30 min as well as dissolved oxygen (DO) 2-3mg/L. The results show that the lava media is a pretty carrier that has promising surface characteristics for microorganism growth and biofilm formation. The biofilter could be operated successfully in 18d, that was shorter than the ceramic and zeolite media filter in the same start-up condition. During the steady operation period, the lava media BAF performed a promising treatment performance of permanganate index, ammonia nitrogen, and turbidity removal, where as the removal rate were 46%, 97% and 62%, respectively. Moreover, the index of UV254, which partly indicates the concentration of hardly degradable substance in the micro-polluted source water, could be removed 23% in the novel media filter.

HOMO-raising noncovalent activation of α-aryl α,β-unsaturated aldehydes using a bifunctional Bronsted base catalyst is achieved. The catalytically generated dienolate intermediate undergoes all-carbon [4+2] cyclizations with nitroolefins, leading to chiral cyclohexenes with four contiguous stereocenters in high yields and with excellent enantioseletivity. Furthermore, the diastereodivergent synthesis of the products is realized by introducing a second steric control to the bifunctional catalyst; 4 isomers out of 16 possible stereoisomers of the products were selectively produced by simple use of two catalysts and their (pseudo)enantiomers. The results presented here provide new insights into the remote activation of the carbonyl functionality as well as the stereodivergent synthesis of complex chiral molecules with multiple stereocenters.

Ruthenium/mesoporous carbon (Ru/MC) composites for supercapacitors were synthesized from RuCl 3 and peanut shell-derived MC by a microwave-assisted heating glycol reduction method. The specific capacitance of obtained Ru/MC composite increased with the increasing Ru mass loaded, maintaining 287 F g −1 even after 1000 cycles at 20% loading of Ru for Ru 20 /MC. The contribution of Ru nanoparticles reached 48.7% of the total capacitance. The energy density of Ru 20 /MC capacitor in 6 M KOH electrolyte only dropped from 10.5 Wh kg −1 to 9.8 Wh kg −1 with the energy density retention of 93.3% after 1000 cycles, showing excellent cycle stability. The results indicate that the one-step microwave-assisted glycol reduction of RuCl 3 is a simple technique to the preparation of high performance Ru/MC composites for supercapacitors.

The effect of salinity on the membrane fouling characteristics was investigated in the intermittently aerated membrane bioreactor (IAMBR). Five different salinity loadings were set from 0 to 35 g·L−1(referring to NaCl), respectively. The removal of total organic carbon (TOC) and ammonia-nitrogen (NH4+-N) was gradually decreased with increasing salinity. The variation of membrane filtration resistance, particle size distribution (PSD), extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), soluble microbial products (SMP), and relative hydrophobicity (RH) analysis revealed that salinity has a significant effect on sludge characteristics in IAMBR. The results also indicated that the membrane fouling is often caused by the integration of sludge characteristics in saline wastewater.

For the sake of the shortage of phosphorus resources and the present situation of municipal sludge treatment and disposal, the necessity of recovery of phosphorus from municipal sludge is analyzed, whereas the methods of phosphorus releasing from solid phase to liquid phase in sewage sludge, such as anaerobic digestion, ozone oxidation, heat treatment, ultrasonic dissolution and alkaline hydrolysis, were discussed in this paper. And then the theories and methods of phosphorus recovering from sewage sludge were summarized, including chemical precipitation, adsorption desorption, burning heat treatment and nanofiltration. Finally, the research development and application prospects of phosphorus release recovery technology from sewage sludge were also proposed. Introduction According to statistics, phosphate has been listed as China in 2010 after the national economy, cannot meet the needs of the development of one of the 20 minerals. By the end of 2014, the amount of sludge produced by China years (by 80% water content) of about 30 million tons, annual sludge production (at 80% moisture content) will increase to 246 thousand m.Currently in the process of sewage treatment, phosphorus in the form of residual sludge in the final discharge, the phosphorus content of about 4%~9%.But the sludge treatment and disposal technology in current hardly realize recovery of phosphorus resources. Therefore, it open up a new direction for the municipal wastewater treatment plant sludge treatment and disposal by using the appropriate technology to recover phosphorus from municipal sewage sludge. This paper summarizes the research status of phosphorus recovery and utilization in sludge, and prospects the research, development and application prospect of phosphorus release and recovery technology in sludge. Release of phosphorus in sludge Stable and efficient phosphorus release method is the most important prerequisite for the recovery of residual sludge. At present, the research on phosphorus release is mainly focused on the following aspects. Anaerobic digestion.Sludge anaerobic digestion to sludge in anaerobic conditions, by facultative and anaerobic bacteria will sludge can be biodegradable organic matter decomposition into carbon dioxide, methane, and water, which is one of the common means of sludge reduction, stabilization.Bi Dongsu studied on the anaerobic digestion process of phosphorus rich excess sludge found that the phosphorus content of residual sludge 4th International Conference on Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering (ICSEEE 2015) © 2016. The method of anaerobic digestion is used to release the phosphorus in the sludge, which has the advantages of simple operation, obvious effect of phosphorus release, stable operation and low cost. At the same time, it also has a long reaction time, large reactor volume, and the shortcomings of the initial investment. Ozone oxidation method.Ozone oxidation method is by ozone cytolysis, not easy to destroy biological degradation of the cell membrane, so that the intracellular substances can quickly dissolved in the liquid phase, so not only can realize the reduction of sludge and can promote the release of phosphorus in the bacterial cell. Ozone oxidation method has the advantages of ozone oxidation ability strong, good sludge disintegration effect, plant covers an area of less; the disadvantage is that sludge disintegration depends on ability to ozone input ratio, in the large-scale application of high investment ratio will lead to a high level of energy consumption. Heat treatment method.Heat treatment method is the use of external heat source in the disintegration of sludge floc structure, the sludge in a part of cell material never dissolved into dissolved phosphorus, so that the more rapid release [2] .Kuroda [3] et al. Akio showed that the concentration of 3500mg/L activated sludge, after heating 60min at 70 °C, the total phosphorus release concentration of sludge reached 110mg/L, and the higher the temperature, the higher the rate of phosphorus release. The heat treatment method has the advantages of good phosphorus releasing effect and short reaction time, and the disadvantage is that the energy consumption is large in the heating process. Ultrasonic method.Ultrasonic lysis method is by means of ultrasonic effect in the liquid produced a series of physical and chemical reaction, change the characteristics of the liquid in the dissolved and particulate substances, destruction of cell structure in sludge, the release of the organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus and other elements from the solid state method. The reaction condition is mild, the reaction time is short, the effect of sludge is good, but the energy consumption is large, and the strength and reaction time still need to be optimized in order to be applied in large scale. Alkali solution.The alkaline treatment of sludge by adding alkali to promote the dissolution of fiber content in the sludge, alkaline conditions can effectively inhibit the activity of activated sludge, intracellular material dissolution of the crack technology. Xiao Benyi and other [4] compared the effects of acid hydrolysis, alkali hydrolysis and pyrolysis of 3 kinds of sludge treatment methods on the nature of the sludge, found that the effect of alkali solution is best, the cracking rate of sludge reached 58.46%. Compared with other methods, the alkaline hydrolysis method has the advantages of simple equipment, easy operation and high efficiency. The PH of the sludge supernatant is alkaline, which provides a basic environment for phosphorus crystallization. But the reaction consumes a large amount of alkali, high investment . Method for recovering phosphorus from sludge At present, the main recovery methods of phosphorus rich supernatant are physical and chemical methods such as chemical precipitation method and other recovery methods.
