The Faculty of Industrial Science and Technology at Tokyo University of Science developed a two-campus system to produce well-trained engineers possessing both technical and humanistic traits. In their first year of study, students reside in dormitories in the natural setting of the Oshamambe campus located in Hokkaido, Japan. The education program at Oshamambe instills a rich appreciation/awareness of humanity which especially enables them to empathize with nature. The faculty has been developing a novel e-Learning system called SPES NOVA (Scalable Personality-Adapted Education System with Networking of Views and Activities). SPES NOVA, which is intended to increase competency in communication skills, based on a remote meeting system that is accessible simultaneously to multiple users via a Flash plug-in on the Internet. To link users in separate locations, each user must have a headset and web cam attached to a personal computer with an Internet connection. At Oshamambe, the SPES NOVA e-Learning system links the students to each other and to the professors. In one of the first applications of SPES NOVA, a student puts on a headset and sits in front of a computer equipped with a camera, and then accesses small-group instruction of a humanity course based mainly on discussion. An electronic whiteboard is displayed at the centre of the monitor, and live-action shots of the users are arranged around the computer screen. The voice and picture data of the lecture are stored as educational materials on the server. Consequently, students can review an entire lecture as well as their own speech and behaviour. The teacher can easily cut segments from the motion pictures of the lecture and combine them into teaching materials. SPES NOVA includes an e-Learning system that distributes educational materials via a wireless LAN during instruction. The system has also been used effectively in an example of ubiquitous computing in laboratory training courses, which included small group instruction. The students are able to browse the systematic exposition of experimental techniques as well as learn the correct usage of experimental apparatus by using a portable video game player during experiments. The teaching materials contain not only the answers to possible questions, but also the lectures for the day. The e-Learning system can record the laboratory training course lectures and then stream them back in video format. Furthermore, the portable video game player can save images as well as data from the experiments. This e-Learning system is connected to the computer network on campus. Therefore, students can review the learning materials by using a personal computer before and after the laboratory training courses. When used during the small group instruction of the laboratory training course, this unique system effectively helps participants develop lecture note-taking skills, hone communication skills, and learn the correct usage of the experimental apparatus used in liberal arts. Furthermore, with SPES NOVA, we can classify individual students not only according to their academic achievements, but also in relation to their behaviour, temperaments and lifestyles. Subsequently, we can establish a recursive evaluation system for each student. (Contains 1 table and 4 figures.)

Organophosphates are well-known as the canonical additives for lubricants. Thus, understanding of the additive behaviour is a key aspect in the design of films on metal surfaces. Different types of phosphates are added to improve their antiwear properties, but the contributions of individual esters to these properties has not been studied using a combination of practical and theoretical approaches. In this study, organophosphates were isolated with high purity and their tribological characteristics were evaluated by using a Bowden-type reciprocating friction tester and a four-ball wear tester. Mono-oleylphosphate had a lower friction than di-oleylphosphate and exhibited excellent antiwear characteristics. Analysis of the sliding surfaces using desorption electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (DESI-MS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that the film structure could predict the occurrence factor of the tribological characteristics of the oleylphosphates. Then the adsorption energies of the monoester on iron and iron oxide surfaces were higher than those of the diester, as assessed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, owing to the difference in their chemisorption processes, as confirmed by further DFT analysis. Studies on the reactivity of additives and their interactions with surfaces are important for understanding the tribochemistry of additives.

In this study, we investigated the effects of H2O2 addition on OH radical formation on the surfaces of visible-light-irradiated BiVO4–TiO2 nanocomposite photocatalysts. Additionally, we examined the possible roles of OH radicals formed by the reduction reaction of H2O2 on the visible-light-irradiated surfaces of photocatalytic BiVO4–TiO2 nanocomposites. The BiVO4–TiO2 nanocomposite photocatalysts were prepared by mixing a BiVO4 photocatalytic film with commercially available semiconductor particulate TiO2 photocatalysts. By removing oxygen gas from the photocatalytic reactor, the effects of oxygen molecules on OH radical formation during the visible-light irradiation of BiVO4–TiO2 nanocomposite photocatalysts were examined. During visible-light irradiation, BiVO4 and BiVO4–TiO2 photocatalysts play different roles in OH radical formation because of two characteristic reduction reaction channels: (a) the direct reduction of H2O2 on photocatalytic surfaces and (b) the indirect reduction reaction of H2O2 by superoxide radical anions (O2−).

(1) Background: To date, little research has epidemiologically examined whether the concentration of particulate matter (PM) 2.5 and its ionic components is related to the prevalence of skin symptom exacerbations. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify this association in patients with allergic diseases. (2) Methods: From 1 February to 31 May 2020, we evaluated the daily prevalence of skin symptoms in outpatients with allergic diseases being treated at Fukuoka National Hospital, Fukuoka, Japan, and measured the concentration of PM2.5 and its ionic components. (3) Results: Univariate analysis showed a statistically significant association between skin symptoms and the concentration of PM2.5 and the ionic components SO42−, NH4+, K+, and Mg2+; multivariate analysis showed a statistically significant association between the daily prevalence of skin symptom and the concentration of the ionic components SO42− or Mg2+. (4) Conclusions: Our findings indicate that the concentration of some PM2.5 ionic components may affect skin symptom in patients with allergic diseases.

Risk factors for hepatocarcinogenesis include chronic inflammation due to viral infection, liver fibrosis, and aging. In this study, we separated carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic cases due to hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, aiming to comprehensively analyze miRNA expression in liver tissues by age, and identify factors that contribute to carcinogenesis. Total RNA was extracted from 360 chronic hepatitis C (CH), 43 HCV infected hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and surrounding non-tumor (SNT) tissues. MicroRNA (miRNA) expression patterns were analyzed using microarray. Using machine learning, we extracted characteristic miRNA expression patterns for each disease and age. There were no age-dependent changes in miRNA expression in the disease-specific comparisons; however, miRNA expression differed among the age groups of 50, 60, and 70 years of age between CH and SNT. The expression of miRNA was different between SNT and HCC only in patients in their 70s. Of the 55 miRNAs with significant differences in expression between CH and SNT, 34 miRNAs showed significant differences in expression even in the degree of liver fibrosis. The observation that miRNAs involved in hepatocarcinogenesis differ at different ages suggests that the mechanisms of carcinogenesis differ by age group as well. We also found that many miRNAs whose expression did not affect liver fibrosis were involved in carcinogenesis. These findings are expected to define biomarkers for detection of HCC at early stage, and develop novel therapeutic targets for HCC.

Among the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD), apathy comprises a set of behavioral, affective, and cognitive features that can be classified into several subtypes. However, the pathophysiology and brain regions that are involved in these different apathy subtypes are still poorly characterized. We examined which subtype of apathy is elicited in a mouse model of PD with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesions and the behavioral symptoms that are exhibited. Male C57/BL6J mice were allocated to sham (n = 8) and 6-OHDA (n = 13) groups and locally injected with saline or 4 µg 6-OHDA bilaterally in the dorsal striatum. We then conducted motor performance tests and apathy-related behavioral experiments. We then pathologically evaluated tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunostaining. The 6-OHDA group exhibited significant impairments in motor function. In the behavioral tests of apathy, significant differences were observed between the sham and 6-OHDA groups in the hole-board test and novelty-suppressed feeding test. The 6-OHDA group exhibited impairments in inanimate novel object preference, whereas social preference was maintained in the three-chamber test. The number of TH+ pixels in the caudate putamen and substantia nigra compacta was significantly reduced in the 6-OHDA group. The present mouse model of PD predominantly showed dorsal striatum dopaminergic neuronal loss and a decrease in novelty seeking as a symptom that is related to the cognitive apathy component.

We examined whether the administration of growth hormone (GH) improves insulin resistance in females of a non-obese hyperglycemic mouse model after birth with low birth weight (LBW), given that GH is known to increase muscle mass. The intrauterine Ischemia group underwent uterine artery occlusion for 15 min on day 16.5 of gestation. At 4 weeks of age, female mice in the Ischemia group were divided into the GH-treated (Ischemia-GH) and non-GH-treated (Ischemia) groups. At 8 weeks of age, the glucose metabolism, muscle pathology, and metabolome of liver were assessed. The insulin resistance index improved in the Ischemia-GH group compared with the Ischemia group (p = 0.034). The percentage of type 1 muscle fibers was higher in the Ischemia-GH group than the Ischemia group (p < 0.001); the muscle fiber type was altered by GH. In the liver, oxidative stress factors were reduced, and ATP production was increased in the Ischemia-GH group compared to the Ischemia group (p = 0.014), indicating the improved mitochondrial function of liver. GH administration is effective in improving insulin resistance by increasing the content of type 1 muscle fibers and improving mitochondrial function of liver in our non-obese hyperglycemic mouse model after birth with LBW.

MTX-211 is a first-in-class dual inhibitor of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and phosphoinositide-3 kinase (PI3K) signaling pathways with a compelling pharmaceutical profile and could enhance the effectiveness of mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK) inhibitor therapy in colorectal tumors with KRAS mutations. However, the specific mechanisms contributing to the acquired resistance to MTX-211 in human cancers remain elusive. Here, we discovered that the overexpression of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) drug transporter ABCG2, a prevalent mechanism associated with multidrug resistance (MDR), could diminish the effectiveness of MTX-211 in human cancer cells. We showed that the drug efflux activity of ABCG2 substantially decreased the intracellular accumulation of MTX-211 in cancer cells. As a result, the cytotoxicity and effectiveness of MTX-211 in suppressing the activation of the EGFR and PI3K pathways were significantly attenuated in cancer cells overexpressing ABCG2. Moreover, the enhancement of the MTX-211-stimulated ATPase activity of ABCG2 and the computational molecular docking analysis illustrating the binding of MTX-211 to the substrate-binding sites of ABCG2 offered a further indication for the interaction between MTX-211 and ABCG2. In summary, our findings indicate that MTX-211 acts as a substrate for ABCG2, underscoring the involvement of ABCG2 in the emergence of resistance to MTX-211. This finding carries clinical implications and merits further exploration.

The Escherichia coli (E. coli)-based protein synthesis using recombinant elements (PURE) system is a cell-free protein synthesis system reconstituted from purified factors essential for E. coli translation. The PURE system is widely used for basic and synthetic biology applications. One of the major challenges associated with the PURE system is that the protein yield of the system varies depending on the protein. Studies have reported that the efficiency of translation is significantly affected by nucleotide and amino acid sequences, especially in the N-terminal region. Here, we investigated the inherent effect of various N-terminal sequences on protein synthesis using the PURE system. We found that a single amino acid substitution in the N-terminal region significantly altered translation efficiency in the PURE system, especially at low temperatures. This result gives us useful suggestions for the expression of the protein of interest in vitro and in vivo.

Poly­(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) has been widely used in industrial and consumer products. In this study, we aimed to address this challenge by synthesizing well-defined multiarm poly­(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) through the use of nonhydrolyzable vinyl ether-type multifunctional RAFT agents. The control over molecular weights was achieved by the RAFT process to afford polymers with dominant head-to-head linkages at the terminal. Especially, quantitative end-functionalization of the synthesized PVAc was performed using Michael thiol–ene or disulfide exchange reactions. Consequently, saponification of the PVAc enabled the synthesis of end-functionalized multiarm PVA in an efficient manner. This straightforward approach afforded well-defined functional PVAs, which enable further chemical modification, thus widening the utility of PVA in a range of applications, such as precisely controlled network synthesis and bioconjugation.

5-azacytidine (AZA), a representative DNA-demethylating drug, has been widely used to treat myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). However, it remains unclear whether AZA’s DNA demethylation of any specific gene is correlated with clinical responses to AZA. In this study, we investigated genes that could contribute to the development of evidence-based epigenetic therapeutics with AZA. A DNA microarray identified that AZA specifically upregulated the expression of 438 genes in AZA-sensitive MDS-L cells but not in AZA-resistant counterpart MDS-L/CDA cells. Of these 438 genes, the ALOX12 gene was hypermethylated in MDS-L cells but not in MDS-L/CDA cells. In addition, we further found that (1) the ALOX12 gene was hypermethylated in patients with MDS compared to healthy controls; (2) MDS classes with excess blasts showed a relatively lower expression of ALOX12 than other classes; (3) a lower expression of ALOX12 correlated with higher bone marrow blasts and a shorter survival in patients with MDS; and (4) an increased ALOX12 expression after AZA treatment was associated with a favorable response to AZA treatment. Taking these factors together, an enhanced expression of the ALOX12 gene may predict favorable therapeutic responses to AZA therapy in MDS.

Keloids (KD) and hypertrophic scars (HTS), which are quite raised and pigmented and have increased vascularization and cellularity, are formed due to the impaired healing process of cutaneous injuries in some individuals having family history and genetic factors. These scars decrease the quality of life (QOL) of patients greatly, due to the pain, itching, contracture, cosmetic problems, and so on, depending on the location of the scars. Treatment/prevention that will satisfy patients’ QOL is still under development. In this article, we review pharmacotherapy for treating KD and HTS, including the prevention of postsurgical recurrence (especially KD). Pharmacotherapy involves monotherapy using a single drug and combination pharmacotherapy using multiple drugs, where drugs are administered orally, topically and/or through intralesional injection. In addition, pharmacotherapy for KD/HTS is sometimes combined with surgical excision and/or with physical therapy such as cryotherapy, laser therapy, radiotherapy including brachytherapy, and silicone gel/sheeting. The results regarding the clinical effectiveness of each mono-pharmacotherapy for KD/HTS are not always consistent but rather scattered among researchers. Multimodal combination pharmacotherapy that targets multiple sites simultaneously is more effective than mono-pharmacotherapy. The literature was searched using PubMed, Google Scholar, and Online search engines.

N-myc downstream-regulated gene 2 (NDRG2), which is a tumour suppressor, is frequently lost in many types of tumours, including adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATL). The downregulation of NDRG2 expression is involved in tumour progression through the aberrant phosphorylation of several important signalling molecules. We observed that the downregulation of NDRG2 induced the translocation of protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5) from the nucleus to the cytoplasm via the increased phosphorylation of PRMT5 at Serine 335. In NDRG2low ATL, cytoplasmic PRMT5 enhanced HSP90A chaperone activity via arginine methylation, leading to tumour progression and the maintenance of oncogenic client proteins. Therefore, we examined whether the inhibition of PRMT5 activity is a drug target in NDRG2low tumours. The knockdown of PRMT5 and binding partner methylsome protein 50 (MEP50) expression significantly demonstrated the suppression of cell proliferation via the degradation of AKT and NEMO in NDRG2low ATL cells, whereas NDRG2-expressing cells did not impair the stability of client proteins. We suggest that the relationship between PRMT5/MEP50 and the downregulation of NDRG2 may exhibit a novel vulnerability and a therapeutic target. Treatment with the PRMT5-specific inhibitors CMP5 and HLCL61 was more sensitive in NDRG2low cancer cells than in NDRG2-expressing cells via the inhibition of HSP90 arginine methylation, along with the degradation of client proteins. Thus, interference with PRMT5 activity has become a feasible and effective strategy for promoting cancer vulnerability in NDRG2low ATL.

Herein we report a copper-catalyzed synthesis of imidazolidine by employing the reaction of aziridine with imine. The reaction smoothly provided a diverse range of 2-substituted imidazolidines with high compatibility with various functional groups. Moreover, during our investigation, we discovered that isocyanate also reacted with aziridine to yield substituted imidazolidinones efficiently. The versatility of these reactions was further demonstrated by their application in the synthesis of hybrid molecules derived from two pharmaceutical compounds. This approach opens new possibilities for the discovery of novel classes of bioactive molecules.

Photon upconversion (UC) is a technology that converts lower-energy photons (longer wavelength light) into higher-energy photons (shorter wavelength light), the opposite of fluorescence. Thus, UC is expected to open a vast domain of photonic applications that are not otherwise possible. Recently, UC by triplet−triplet annihilation (TTA) between organic molecules has been studied because of its applicability to low-intensity light, although the majority of such studies have focused on liquid samples in the form of organic solvent solutions. To broaden the range of applications, solid-state UC materials have been an active area of research. We recently developed air-stable, high-performance molecular UC crystals that utilize a stable solid-solution phase of bicomponent organic crystals. This article begins with a brief overview of previous challenges in developing and improving solid-state TTA–UC materials. Then, we briefly review and explain the concept as well as advantages of our molecular solid-solution UC crystals. We applied these organic crystals for the first time to a water environment. We observed blue UC emission upon photoexcitation at 542 nm (green–yellow light) and then measured the excitation intensity dependence as well as the temporal stability of the UC emission in air-saturated water. In nondegassed water, these organic crystals were stable, functioned with a low excitation threshold intensity of a few milliwatts per square centimeter, and exhibited high photo-irradiation durability at least over 40 h; indicating that the developed organic crystals are also viable for aqueous conditions. Therefore, the organic crystals presented in this report are expected to extend the domain of UC-based photonic applications in practical water systems including in vivo diagnostic, clinical, and therapeutic applications.

Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models retain the characteristics of tumors and are useful tools for personalized therapy and translational research. In this study, we aimed to establish PDX models for uterine corpus malignancies (UC-PDX) and analyze their similarities. Tissue fragments obtained from 92 patients with uterine corpus malignancies were transplanted subcutaneously into immunodeficient mice. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses were performed to compare tumors of patients with PDX tumors. DNA and RNA sequencing were performed to validate the genetic profile. Furthermore, the RNA in extracellular vesicles (EVs) extracted from primary and PDX tumors was analyzed. Among the 92 cases, 52 UC-PDX models were established, with a success rate of 56.5%. The success rate depended on tumor histology and staging. The pathological and immunohistochemical features of primary and PDX tumors were similar. DNA sequencing revealed similarities in gene mutations between the primary and PDX tumors. RNA sequencing showed similarities in gene expressions between primary and PDX tumors. Furthermore, the RNA profiles of the EVs obtained from primary and PDX tumors were similar. As UC-PDX retained the pathological and immunohistochemical features and gene profiles of primary tumors, they may provide a platform for developing personalized medicine and translational research.

Accurate staging of bladder cancer assists in identifying optimal treatment (e.g., transurethral resection vs. radical cystectomy vs. bladder preservation). However, currently, about one-third of patients are over-staged and one-third are under-staged. There is a pressing need for a more accurate staging modality to evaluate patients with bladder cancer to assist clinical decision-making. We hypothesize that MRI/RNA-seq-based radiogenomics and artificial intelligence can more accurately stage bladder cancer. A total of 40 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and matched formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues were available for analysis. Twenty-eight (28) MRI and their matched FFPE tissues were available for training analysis, and 12 matched MRI and FFPE tissues were used for validation. FFPE samples were subjected to bulk RNA-seq, followed by bioinformatics analysis. In the radiomics, several hundred image-based features from bladder tumors in MRI were extracted and analyzed. Overall, the model obtained mean sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 94%, 88%, and 92%, respectively, in differentiating intra- vs. extra-bladder cancer. The proposed model demonstrated improvement in the three matrices by 17%, 33%, and 25% and 17%, 16%, and 17% as compared to the genetic- and radiomic-based models alone, respectively. The radiogenomics of bladder cancer provides insight into discriminative features capable of more accurately staging bladder cancer. Additional studies are underway.

Periodontal ligament-associated protein 1 (PLAP-1), also known as Asporin, is an extracellular matrix protein expressed in the periodontal ligament and plays a crucial role in periodontal tissue homeostasis. Our previous research demonstrated that PLAP-1 may inhibit TLR2/4-mediated inflammatory responses, thereby exerting a protective function against periodontitis. However, the precise roles of PLAP-1 in the periodontal ligament (PDL) and its relationship to periodontitis have not been fully explored. In this study, we employed PLAP-1 knockout mice to investigate its roles and contributions to PDL tissue and function in a ligature-induced periodontitis model. Mandibular bone samples were collected from 10-week-old male C57BL/6 (WT) and PLAP-1 knockout (KO) mice. These samples were analyzed through micro-computed tomography (μCT) scanning, hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, picrosirius red staining, and fluorescence immunostaining using antibodies targeting extracellular matrix proteins. Additionally, the structure of the PDL collagen fibrils was examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We also conducted tooth extraction and ligature-induced periodontitis models using both wild-type and PLAP-1 KO mice. PLAP-1 KO mice did not exhibit any changes in alveolar bone resorption up to the age of 10 weeks, but they did display an enlarged PDL space, as confirmed by μCT and histological analyses. Fluorescence immunostaining revealed increased expression of extracellular matrix proteins, including Col3, BGN, and DCN, in the PDL tissues of PLAP-1 KO mice. TEM analysis demonstrated an increase in collagen diameter within the PDL of PLAP-1 KO mice. In line with these findings, the maximum stress required for tooth extraction was significantly lower in PLAP-1 KO mice in the tooth extraction model compared to WT mice (13.89 N ± 1.34 and 16.51 N ± 1.31, respectively). In the ligature-induced periodontitis model, PLAP-1 knockout resulted in highly severe alveolar bone resorption, with a higher number of collagen fiber bundle tears and significantly more osteoclasts in the periodontium. Our results demonstrate that mice lacking PLAP-1/Asporin show alteration of periodontal ligament structures and acceleration of bone loss in periodontitis. This underscores the significant role of PLAP-1 in maintaining collagen fibrils in the PDL and suggests the potential of PLAP-1 as a therapeutic target for periodontal diseases.

ATP-binding cassette transporters, including ABCB1 (P-glycoprotein) and ABCG2 (BCRP/MXR/ABCP), are pivotal in multidrug resistance (MDR) development in cancer patients undergoing conventional chemotherapy. The absence of approved therapeutic agents for multidrug-resistant cancers presents a significant challenge in effectively treating cancer. Researchers propose repurposing existing drugs to sensitize multidrug-resistant cancer cells, which overexpress ABCB1 or ABCG2, to conventional anticancer drugs. The goal of this study is to assess whether furmonertinib, a third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor overcomes drug resistance mediated by ABCB1 and ABCG2 transporters. Furmonertinib stands out due to its ability to inhibit drug transport without affecting protein expression. The discovery of this characteristic was validated through ATPase assays, which revealed interactions between furmonertinib and ABCB1/ABCG2. Additionally, in silico docking of furmonertinib offered insights into potential interaction sites within the drug-binding pockets of ABCB1 and ABCG2, providing a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms responsible for the reversal of MDR by this repurposed drug. Given the encouraging results, we propose that furmonertinib should be explored as a potential candidate for combination therapy in patients with tumors that have high levels of ABCB1 and/or ABCG2. This combination therapy holds the potential to enhance the effectiveness of conventional anticancer drugs and presents a promising strategy for overcoming MDR in cancer treatment.

In this study, nano-scratch tests were conducted using atomic force microscope (AFM) to clarify the hardness of a tribofilm derived from an additive (Fluid A or Fluid B in automatic-transmission fluid) formed on an SKS3 cold work tool steel substrate surface. Comparisons between nano-indentation hardness tests and AFM nano-scratch tests were performed for each specimen. Prior to these tests, the tribofilms on the SKS3 substrate were examined with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). In order to calculate the hardness of the tribofilm from the nano-scratch results, we assumed that the AFM diamond tip acted as an abrasive to plough the tribofilm. The phosphorous-derived tribofilm formed from Fluid A was harder than the sulfur-derived tribofilm from Fluid B, and it was calculated that the phosphorous-derived tribofilm was approximately 2.64 GPa and the sulfur-derived tribofilm was 1.89 GPa. After 10 nano-indentation hardness tests on each tribofilm, the maximum indentation depth into the tribofilm formed from Fluid A was approximately 31 nm, while it was approximately 36 nm for Fluid B. These results are qualitatively consistent with the hardness results obtained by the AFM nano-scratch test method.

Light, an inevitable factor for human life, can have negative effects such as cellular inflammation and thus be toxic to cells. Lipids are important biomolecules that are involved in cellular inflammatory responses. Our research revealed the impact of light on cellular lipids. We discovered that blue light irradiation altered cellular lipidome based on non-targeted lipidomic analysis. Inflammation-related lysophospholipids, arachidonic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and eicosapentaenoic acid, in particular, were significantly increased. We created opto-PiC, an optolipidomic tool based on the optogenetically engineered cPLA2 enzyme. Light-induced lipidomic changes were reversed by opto-PiC. Furthermore, the results showed that opto-PiC reduced cell death rate under blue light. Overall, our research provided lipidomic insights and optolipidomics approach into light toxicity. This could help the therapy development in the future for inflammation-related disease.

Abstract Hydrogenolysis of the furan rings of furfural and furfuryl alcohol, which can be obtained from biomass, has attracted attention as a method for obtaining valuable chemicals such as 1,2‐pentanediol. In this study, we examined the hydrogenolysis of furfuryl alcohol to 1,2‐pentanediol over Pd/C, Pt/C, Rh/C, and various supported Ru catalysts in several solvents. In particular, we investigated the effects of combinations of solvents and supports on the reaction outcome. Of all the tested combinations, Ru/MgO in water gave the best selectivity for 1,2‐pentanediol: with this catalyst, 42 % selectivity for 1,2‐pentanediol was achieved upon hydrogenolysis of furfuryl alcohol for 1 h at 463 K. In contrast, reaction in water in the presence of Ru/Al2O3 afforded cyclopentanone and cyclopentanol by means of hydrogenation and rearrangement reactions.

Indonesia has a variety of ethnic languages, most of which belong to the same language family: the Austronesian languages. Due to the shared language family, words in Indonesian ethnic languages are very similar. However, previous research suggests that these Indonesian ethnic languages are endangered. Thus, to prevent that, we propose the creation of a bilingual dictionary between ethnic languages, using a neural network approach to extract transformation rules, employing character-level embedding and the Bi-LSTM method in a sequence-to-sequence model. The model has an encoder and decoder. The encoder reads the input sequence character by character, generates context, and then extracts a summary of the input. The decoder produces an output sequence wherein each character at each timestep, as well as the subsequent character output, are influenced by the previous character. The first experiment focuses on Indonesian and Minangkabau languages with 10,277 word pairs. To evaluate the model’s performance, five-fold cross-validation was used. The character-level seq2seq method (Bi-LSTM as an encoder and LSTM as a decoder) with an average precision of 83.92% outperformed the SentencePiece byte pair encoding (vocab size of 33) with an average precision of 79.56%. Furthermore, to evaluate the performance of the neural network model in finding the pattern, a rule-based approach was conducted as the baseline. The neural network approach obtained 542 more correct translations compared to the baseline. We implemented the best setting (character-level embedding with Bi-LSTM as the encoder and LSTM as the decoder) for four other Indonesian ethnic languages: Malay, Palembang, Javanese, and Sundanese. These have half the size of input dictionaries. The average precision scores for these languages are 65.08%, 62.52%, 59.69%, and 58.46%, respectively. This shows that the neural network approach can identify transformation patterns of the Indonesian language to closely related languages (such as Malay and Palembang) better than distantly related languages (such as Javanese and Sundanese).

Although liver regeneration has been extensively studied, the effects of bile-derived extracellular vesicles (bile EVs) on hepatocytes has not been elucidated. We examined the influence of bile EVs, collected from a rat model of 70% partial hepatectomy (PH), on hepatocytes. We produced bile-duct-cannulated rats. Bile was collected over time through an extracorporeal bile duct cannulation tube. Bile EVs were extracted via size exclusion chromatography. The number of EVs released into the bile per liver weight 12 h after PH significantly increased. Bile EVs collected 12 and 24 h post-PH, and after sham surgery (PH12-EVs, PH24-EVs, sham-EVs) were added to the rat hepatocyte cell line, and 24 h later, RNA was extracted and transcriptome analysis performed. The analysis revealed that more upregulated/downregulated genes were observed in the group with PH24-EVs. Moreover, the gene ontology (GO) analysis focusing on the cell cycle revealed an upregulation of 28 types of genes in the PH-24 group, including genes that promote cell cycle progression, compared to the sham group. PH24-EVs induced hepatocyte proliferation in a dose-dependent manner in vitro, whereas sham-Evs showed no significant difference compared to the controls. This study revealed that post-PH bile Evs promote the proliferation of the hepatocytes, and genes promoting cell cycles are upregulated in hepatocytes.

Tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) are endogenous matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors. TIMP1 is produced by cancer cells and has pleiotropic activities. However, its role and source in multiple myeloma (MM) are unclear. Here, we evaluated TIMP1 protein and mRNA levels in bone marrow (BM) plasma cells and assessed the effects of TIMP1 expression on fibroblast invasive capacity using three-dimensional spheroid cell invasion assays. TIMP1 mRNA and protein levels were elevated when patients progressed from monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance or smouldering myeloma to MM. Furthermore, TIMP1 levels decreased at complete response and TIMP1 protein levels increased with higher international staging. TIMP1 mRNA levels were markedly higher in extramedullary plasmacytoma and MM with t(4;14). Overall survival and post-progression survival were significantly lower in MM patients with high TIMP1 protein. Recombinant TIMP1 did not directly affect MM cells but enhanced the invasive capacity of fibroblasts; this effect was suppressed by treatment with anti-TIMP1 antibodies. Fibroblasts supported myeloma cell invasion and expansion in extracellular matrix. Overall, these results suggested that MM-derived TIMP1 induces the invasive phenotype in fibroblasts and is involved in disease progression. Further studies are required to elucidate the specific roles of TIMP1 in MM and facilitate the development of novel therapies targeting the TIMP1 pathway.

Abstract Intermediate water (IW), which is formed not only by biocompatible polymers such as poly(2-methoxyethyl acrylate) (PMEA), but also by biomacromolecules, plays a key role in determining the biocompatibility of synthetic polymers. In this study, we compare the well-defined linear and cyclic PMEA using differential scanning calorimetry and atomic force microscopy. This study aims to clarify the role of the chain-end effect in IW formation to establish design guidelines for biomaterials.

We developed a new aerosol satellite retrieval algorithm combining a numerical aerosol forecast. In the retrieval algorithm, the short-term forecast from an aerosol data assimilation system was used as an a priori estimate instead of spatially and temporally constant values. This method was demonstrated using observation of the Advanced Himawari Imager onboard the Japan Meteorological Agency's geostationary satellite Himawari-8. Overall, the retrieval results incorporated strengths of the observation and the model and complemented their respective weaknesses, showing spatially finer distributions than the model forecast and less noisy distributions than the original algorithm. We validated the new algorithm using ground observation data and found that the aerosol parameters detectable by satellite sensors were retrieved more accurately than an a priori model forecast by adding satellite information. Further, the satellite retrieval accuracy was improved by introducing the model forecast instead of the constant a priori estimates. By using the assimilated forecast for an a priori estimate, information from previous observations can be propagated to future retrievals, leading to better retrieval accuracy. Observational information from the satellite and aerosol transport by the model are incorporated cyclically to effectively estimate the optimum field of aerosol.

The Hansen solubility parameter (HSP) is a useful index for reasoning the gelation behavior of low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs). However, the conventional HSP-based methods only “classify” solvents that can and cannot form gels and require many trials to achieve this. For engineering purposes, quantitative estimation of gel properties using the HSP is highly desired. In this study, we measured critical gelation concentrations based on three distinct definitions, mechanical strength, and light transmittance of organogels prepared with 12-hydroxystearic acid (12HSA) and correlated them with the HSP of solvents. The results demonstrated that the mechanical strength, in particular, strongly correlated with the distance of 12HSA and solvent in the HSP space. Additionally, the results indicated that the constant volume-based concentration should be used when comparing the properties of organogels to a different solvent. These findings are helpful in efficiently determining the gelation sphere of new LMWGs in HSP space and contribute to designing organogels with tunable physical properties.

Purpose: Bladder cancer (BCa) is one of the most common cancer types worldwide and is characterized by a high rate of recurrence. In previous studies, we and others have described the functional influence of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI1) in bladder cancer development. While polymorphisms in PAI1 have been associated with increased risk and worsened prognosis in some cancers, the mutational status of PAI1 in human bladder tumors has not been well defined. Methods: In this study, we evaluated the mutational status of PAI1 in a series of independent cohorts, comprised of a total of 660 subjects. Results: Sequencing analyses identified two clinically relevant 3′ untranslated region (UTR) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in PAI1 (rs7242; rs1050813). Somatic SNP rs7242 was present in human BCa cohorts (overall incidence of 72%; 62% in Caucasians and 72% in Asians). In contrast, the overall incidence of germline SNP rs1050813 was 18% (39% in Caucasians and 6% in Asians). Furthermore, Caucasian patients with at least one of the described SNPs had worse recurrence-free survival and overall survival (p = 0.03 and p = 0.03, respectively). In vitro functional studies demonstrated that SNP rs7242 increased the anti-apoptotic effect of PAI1, and SNP rs1050813 was related to a loss of contact inhibition associated with cellular proliferation when compared to wild type. Conclusion: Further investigation of the prevalence and potential downstream influence of these SNPs in bladder cancer is warranted.

Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a polyphenol that is present in coffee beans, many vegetables, and fruits. Since CGA has been reported to exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, it is expected to protect against periodontitis. In the present study, we used a ligature-induced experimental periodontitis model and investigated the beneficial effects of CGA against alveolar bone resorption caused by experimental periodontitis. To examine the inhibitory effects of CGA on bone loss, a ligature was wrapped around the maxillary right second molar, and CGA was intraperitoneally injected once a day for 2 weeks. In another experiment to investigate the restorative effects of CGA on bone loss, a ligature was wrapped around the maxillary right second molar for 2 weeks, it was then removed, and CGA was intraperitoneally injected once a day for 2 weeks. At the end of the experiments, the maxillae were removed, and CT images were taken. Alveolar bone loss was measured as the distance from the cement–enamel junction to the alveolar crest. The statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism6 (Dunn’s multiple comparison test). The results revealed that the ratio of the buccal alveolar bone loss (vs. the bone loss on the nonligated side) induced by ligation was significantly decreased by the administration of CGA (5 mg/kg) for 2 weeks. Moreover, the bone loss ratio on the buccal and palatal sides after 2 weeks of ligation was significantly decreased by the 2-week administration of CGA (5 mg/kg). The present results revealed that CGA exerted preventive effects against alveolar bone loss caused by experimental periodontitis.

Human genomic analysis and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified genes that are risk factors for early and late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD genes). Although the genetics of aging and longevity have been extensively studied, previous studies have focused on a specific set of genes that have been shown to contribute to or are a risk factor for AD. Thus, the connections among the genes involved in AD, aging, and longevity are not well understood. Here, we identified the genetic interaction networks (referred to as pathways) of aging and longevity within the context of AD by using a gene set enrichment analysis by Reactome that cross-references more than 100 bioinformatic databases to allow interpretation of the biological functions of gene sets through a wide variety of gene networks. We validated the pathways with a threshold of p-value < 1.00 × 10−5 using the databases to extract lists of 356 AD genes, 307 aging-related (AR) genes, and 357 longevity genes. There was a broad range of biological pathways involved in AR and longevity genes shared with AD genes. AR genes identified 261 pathways within the threshold of p < 1.00 × 10−5, of which 26 pathways (10% of AR gene pathways) were further identified by overlapping genes among AD and AR genes. The overlapped pathways included gene expression (p = 4.05 × 10−11) including ApoE, SOD2, TP53, and TGFB1 (p = 2.84 × 10−10); protein metabolism and SUMOylation, including E3 ligases and target proteins (p = 1.08 × 10−7); ERBB4 signal transduction (p = 2.69 × 10−6); the immune system, including IL-3 and IL-13 (p = 3.83 × 10−6); programmed cell death (p = 4.36 × 10−6); and platelet degranulation (p = 8.16 × 10−6), among others. Longevity genes identified 49 pathways within the threshold, of which 12 pathways (24% of longevity gene pathways) were further identified by overlapping genes among AD and longevity genes. They include the immune system, including IL-3 and IL-13 (p = 7.64 × 10−8), plasma lipoprotein assembly, remodeling and clearance (p < 4.02 × 10−6), and the metabolism of fat-soluble vitamins (p = 1.96 × 10−5). Thus, this study provides shared genetic hallmarks of aging, longevity, and AD backed up by statistical significance. We discuss the significant genes involved in these pathways, including TP53, FOXO, SUMOylation, IL4, IL6, APOE, and CEPT, and suggest that mapping the gene network pathways provide a useful basis for further medical research on AD and healthy aging.

Candida albicans (Ca) is frequently detected in the peri-implant sulcus with peri-implantitis, a major postoperative complication after oral implant therapy. However, the involvement of Ca in the pathogenesis of peri-implantitis remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to clarify Ca prevalence in the peri-implant sulcus and investigated the effects of candidalysin (Clys), a toxin produced by Ca, on human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs). Peri-implant crevicular fluid (PICF) was cultured using CHROMagar and Ca colonization rate and colony numbers were calculated. The levels of interleukin (IL)-1β and soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R) in PICF were quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Pro-inflammatory mediator production and intracellular signaling pathway (MAPK) activation in HGFs were measured by ELISA and Western blotting, respectively. The Ca colonization rate and the average number of colonies in the peri-implantitis group tended to be higher than those in the healthy group. IL-1β and sIL-6R levels in the PICF were significantly higher in the peri-implantitis group than in the healthy group. Clys significantly induced IL-6 and pro-matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 productions in HGFs, and co-stimulation with Clys and sIL-6R increased IL-6, pro-MMP-1, and IL-8 production levels in HGFs compared with Clys stimulation alone. These findings suggest that Clys from Ca plays a role in the pathogenesis of peri-implantitis by inducing pro-inflammatory mediators.

Current research on the angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) gene has yielded controversial results on whether different ACE polymorphisms are linked with human longevity. ACE polymorphisms are a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease and age-onset diseases that may contribute to the mortality of older people. Our goal is to consolidate existing studies, using artificial intelligence-assisted software to come to a more precise understanding of the role of the ACE gene in human longevity. The I (insertion) and D (deletion) polymorphisms in the intron are correlated with the levels of circulating ACE; homozygous D (DD) is high, and homozygous I (II) is low. Here, we performed a detailed meta-analysis of the I and D polymorphisms using centenarians (100+ years old), long-lived subjects (85+ years old), and control groups. ACE genotype distribution was analyzed across a total of 2054 centenarians and 12,074 controls, as well as 1367 long-lived subjects between the ages of 85–99, using the inverse variance and random effects methods. The ACE DD genotype was found to be favored in centenarians (OR: 1.41 (95% CI: 1.19–1.67), p < 0.0001) with a heterogeneity of 32%, and the II genotype slightly favored the control groups (OR: 0.81 (95% CI: 0.66–0.98), p = 0.03) with a heterogeneity of 28%, corroborating results from previous meta-analyses. Novel to our meta-analysis, the ID genotype was found to be favored in control groups (OR: 0.86 (95% CI: 0.76–0.97), p = 0.01) with a heterogeneity of 0%. The long-lived group showed a similar positive association between the DD genotype and longevity (OR: 1.34 (95% CI: 1.21–1.48), p < 0.0001) and a negative association between the II genotype and longevity (OR: 0.79 (95% CI: 0.70–0.88), p < 0.0001). The long-lived ID genotype did not show significant findings (OR: 0.93 (95% CI: 0.84–1.02), p = 0.79). In conclusion, the results suggest a significant positive association of the DD genotype with human longevity. However, despite the previous study, the results do not confirm a positive association of the ID genotype with human longevity. We suggest a few important paradoxical implications: (1) inhibition of ACE can increase longevity in model systems from nematodes to mammals, seemingly opposite to the finding in humans; (2) exceptional longevity associated with homozygous DD is also associated with age-related diseases with higher mortality risks in homozygous DD. We discuss ACE, longevity, and age-related diseases.

In this work, three protic ionic liquids (PILs) were newly synthesized to prepare thermally stable lubricants. The thermal stability of PILs increases with increasing ΔpKa, defined as the difference in the logarithm of the acid dissociation constant (pKa) between a Brønsted acid and a Brønsted base. Long alkyl chains in oiliness additives are effective for reducing friction, and thus PILs with a high ΔpKa and an octadecyl group were expected to reduce friction at high temperatures. To verify this design concept experimentally, the friction and wear properties of PILs that have high ΔpKa values with and without an octadecyl group were evaluated using pin-on-disk tribotester with high-frequency induction heating in comparison to the conventional lubricant metallocene polyalphaolefin (mPAO; molecular weight: 5,400). During tribotests at 200°C, the PIL without an octadecyl group afforded a high friction coefficient, whereas both the PILs containing octadecyl groups and mPAO exhibited relatively low friction coefficients. At 300°C, the friction coefficient for mPAO abruptly increased and stick–slip noise was observed because the lubricant evaporated from the disk. In contrast, the friction coefficients of the PILs with an octadecyl groups remained low during the friction tests, even at 300°C.

Lipoquinones, such as ubiquinones (UQ) and menaquinones (MK), function as essential lipid components of the electron transport system (ETS) by shuttling electrons and protons to facilitate the production of ATP in eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Lipoquinone function in membrane systems has been widely studied, but the exact location and conformation within membranes remains controversial. Lipoquinones, such as Coenzyme Q (UQ-10), are generally depicted simply as “Q” in life science diagrams or in extended conformations in primary literature even though specific conformations are important for function in the ETS. In this study, our goal was to determine the location, orientation, and conformation of UQ-2, a truncated analog of UQ-10, in model membrane systems and to compare our results to previously studied MK-2. Herein, we first carried out a six-step synthesis to yield UQ-2 and then demonstrated that UQ-2 adopts a folded conformation in organic solvents using 1H-1H 2D NOESY and ROESY NMR spectroscopic studies. Similarly, using 1H-1H 2D NOESY NMR spectroscopic studies, UQ-2 was found to adopt a folded, U-shaped conformation within the interface of an AOT reverse micelle model membrane system. UQ-2 was located slightly closer to the surfactant-water interface compared to the more hydrophobic MK-2. In addition, Langmuir monolayer studies determined UQ-2 resided within the monolayer water-phospholipid interface causing expansion, whereas MK-2 was more likely to be compressed out and reside within the phospholipid tails. All together these results support the model that lipoquinones fold regardless of the headgroup structure but that the polarity of the headgroup influences lipoquinone location within the membrane interface. These results have implications regarding the redox activity near the interface as quinone vs. quinol forms may facilitate locomotion of lipoquinones within the membrane. The location, orientation, and conformation of lipoquinones are critical for their function in generating cellular energy within membrane ETS, and the studies described herein shed light on the behavior of lipoquinones within membrane-like environments.

Cinnamomum stenophyllum (Meisn.) Vattimo-Gil (Lauraceae) is a native and vulnerable Brazilian species restricted to the Atlantic Forest. The leaf essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation was characterized for the first time by two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOFMS). This analysis resulted in the tentatively identification of 80 compounds, showing the superior performance of this method in comparison to the seven compounds identified by GC–MS. The identified compounds included 8 ketones, 7 monoterpene hydrocarbons, 30 oxygenated monoterpenes, 4 sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and 23 oxygenated sesquiterpenes, showing that the C. stenophyllum oil contained mostly oxygenated mono and sesquiterpenes. The oil cytotoxicity was tested against two human cancer cell lines, colon adenocarcinoma (HCT-116) and breast cancer carcinoma (MCF-7), and the non-tumor retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE) using the colorimetric MTT assay. Both cancer cell lines were sensible to leaf essential oil, with IC50 50 μg/mL), suggesting selectivity to cancer cells. The results showed that the C. stenophyllum leaf essential oil has a cytotoxic potential, presenting several compounds already known as biologically active against tumor cells. The precise measurement of microstructures and other micron-sized materials has garnered considerable interest in recent years. We have developed a measurement system that uses an etched small diameter optical fiber as a stylus to measure microstructures with low contact force. However, when the diameter of the stylus tip is less than a few tens of micrometers, the surface forces between the measured surface and the stylus tip become larger than the gravity of the stylus tip, causing the stylus tip to stick to the measured surface. This adhesion leads to an increase in measurement time and a decrease in measurement accuracy. In this study, we fabricated a high-function stylus with water-repellent and antistatic coatings applied to the stylus tip to reduce the adhesion between the stylus tip and measured surface due to surface forces, and conducted performance evaluation tests. As a result, the average separation distance was 13.8 µm when a fluorinated resin coating with a contact angle of 105° was used, confirming that the influence of liquid bridge forces could be reduced by approximately 78%. Additionally, when static elimination experiments were conducted by scanning the charged surface at a pitch of 0.5 µm using an antistatic coating stylus with a gold on the stylus surface, the average adsorption distance was 3.6 µm, confirming that the effect of electrostatic force could be reduced by 71%.

Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in women. The development of new therapies with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) is being investigated for cervical cancer; however, their efficacy is not currently sufficient. Oncolytic virus therapy can increase tumor immunogenicity and enhance the antitumor effect of ICIs. In this report, the therapeutic potential of a triple-mutated oncolytic herpes virus (T-01) with an ICI for human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cervical cancer was evaluated using a bilateral syngeneic murine model. The efficacy of intratumoral (i.t.) administration with T-01 and subcutaneous (s.c.) administration of anti-programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) antibody (Ab) was equivalent to that of anti-PD-L1 Ab alone on the T-01-injected side. Moreover, combination therapy had no significant antitumor effect compared to monotherapy on the T-01-non-injected side. Combination therapy significantly increased the number of tumor specific T cells in the tumor. While T-01 could not be isolated from tumors receiving combination therapy, it could be isolated following T-01 monotherapy. Furthermore, T-01 had a cytotoxic effect on stimulated T cells. These results suggest that T-01 and anti-PD-L1 Ab partially counteract and therefore concomitant administration should be considered with caution.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of oxygen tension on mouse induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells by assessing differentiation in terms of embryoid body (EB) size and mRNA and protein expression levels of collagen type 1 and Runx2. EBs and outgrowth cells (OGCs) were cultured in conditions of hypoxia (2%), normoxia (21%) and hyperoxia (35%). Significantly larger EBs were observed in the hyperoxia and normoxia groups compared to the hypoxia group on Days 8 and 10. The hyperoxia group had significantly higher mRNA and protein expression levels of collagen type 1 and Runx2 compared to the hypoxia and normoxia groups on Days 10 and 26, and these expression levels in the hypoxia group were significantly lower than the normoxia group on Days 10 and 26. These results suggest that hyperoxia accelerates the enlargement in EBs and the differentiation of iPS cells.

The fac-[Re(CO)3(dcbH2)(trans-stpy)]+ complex, dcbH2 = 2,2’-bipyridine-4,4’-dicarboxylic acid and trans-stpy = trans-4-styrylpyridine, has been strategically designed to absorb visible light up to 436 nm. For device purpose, the complex is also engineered to adsorb to the mesoporous TiO2 thin film through carboxylic acid groups. In this work, an efficient visible trans-to-cis photoisomerization is described for the first time for an anchored-rhenium(I) complex on the TiO2 surface.

Ovarian clear cell carcinomas (OCCs) arise from endometriotic cysts that many women develop. Biomarkers for early OCC detection need to be identified. Extracellular vesicles have attracted attention as biomarker carriers. This study aims to identify cancer-specific miRNAs as novel OCC biomarkers using tissue-exudative extracellular vesicles (Te-EVs). Te-EVs were collected from four patients with OCC on one side and a normal ovary on the other side. Microarray analysis was performed to identify cancer-specific miRNAs in Te-EVs. Serum samples obtained before and after surgery from patients with OCC and atypical endometrial hyperplasia (AEH) (controls) were compared using real-time PCR to examine changes in the detected EV miRNA levels. Thirty-seven miRNAs were >2-fold upregulated on the OCC side compared with the normal ovarian side. We selected 17 miRNAs and created specific primers for 12 of these miRNAs. The levels of six EV miRNAs were significantly decreased in postoperative OCC serum compared to those in preoperative OCC serum. In contrast, no significant change was observed between the pre and postoperative values in the control group. We identified OCC tissue-specific miRNAs in the EVs secreted by OCC tissues. These EV miRNAs have potential for use as biomarkers for the early diagnosis and detection of OCC.
