Although studies on snow algae and macroinvertebrates have been frequently conducted on snow patches, only few surveys have been focused on microinvertebrates which reach high biomass and play various trophic roles in other cold habitats. The aims of this study were (1) to search for microinvertebrates in seasonal surface snow patches located on the slope of Mt. Gassan, in northern Japan, and (2) to identify factors determining their distribution associated with snow algal blooms of various colorations (orange, green, and golden-brown) collected from the same sampling site over two seasons (2018, 2019). Microscopic observation revealed presence of two major groups of microinvertebrates: Tardigrada and Rotifera. They were concentrated in green snow colored by blooms of Chloromonas sp. in comparison to orange or golden-brown snow and only a few were found in white snow. Mean body length of tardigrades increased throughout the melt season, their intestine content was green and they laid eggs on colored snow. These results suggest that tardigrades preferentially grew and reproduced on green snow patches. Population densities of tardigrades, rotifers and concentration of chlorophyll a were significantly correlated. Our study indicates that green snow patches in temperate mountainous forests constitute important and unique low-temperature ecosystems for microinvertebrates. Snow covered by algae is an unrecognized novel habitats for tardigrades and rotifers.

Cryoconite is a mixture of mineral and organic material covering glacial ice, playing important roles in biogeochemical cycles and lowering the albedo of a glacier's surface. Understanding the differences in structure of cryoconite across the globe can be important in recognizing past and future changes in supraglacial environments and ice-organisms-dust interactions. Despite the worldwide distribution and over a century of studies, the basic characteristics of cryoconite, including its forms and geochemistry, remain poorly studied. The major purpose of our study is the presentation and description of morphological diversity, chemical and photoautotrophs composition, and organic matter content of cryoconite sampled from 33 polar and mountain glaciers around the globe. Observations revealed that cryoconite included various morphologies including loose and granular forms. Granular cryoconite includes smooth, rounded, or irregularly shaped forms; with some having their surfaces covered by cyanobacteria filaments. The occurrence of granules increased with the organic matter content in cryoconite. Moreover, a major driver of cryoconite colouring was the concentration of organic matter and its interplay with minerals. The structure of cyanobacteria and algae communities in cryoconite differs between glaciers, but representatives of cyanobacteria families Pseudanabaenaceae and Phormidiaceae, and algae families Mesotaeniaceae and Ulotrichaceae were the most common. The most of detected cyanobacterial taxa are known to produce polymeric substances (EPS) that may cementing matter and form granules. Organic matter content in cryoconite varied between glaciers, ranging from 1% to >40%. The geochemistry of all the investigated samples reflected local sediment sources, except of highly concentrated Pb and Hg in cryoconite collected from European glaciers near industrialized regions, corroborating cryoconite as element-specific collectors and potential environmental indicator of anthropogenic activity. Our work supports a notion that cryoconite may be more than just simple sediment and instead exhibits complex structure with relevance for biodiversity and the functioning of glacial ecosystems.

The results show the morphological analyses and spectroscopic studies of snow and glacier algae and their parasitic fungi in Svalbard (High Arctic). Fixed algal cells of two species, Sanguina nivaloides and Ancylonema nordenskioeldii, were imaged using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Fluorescence microscopy using Calcofluor white stain supported the observations of parasitic fungi on the algal cells. Images in brightfield microscopy showed chytrid-like fungi penetrating the cells of both algal species. Parasites were found to colonize the cells of A. nordenskioeldii and hypnozygotes of S. nivaloides, while no fungi infected the cyst stages of S. nivaloides. The autofluorescence analysis revealed the ability of S. nivaloides to glow when excited with different wavelengths, while A. nordenskioeldii did not fluoresce. The hypnozygotes of S. nivaloides emitted brighter fluorescence than the cysts, and the most intense luminosity was observed in the UV range. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) spectroscopic analysis showed differences in the chemical composition between samples collected from three different sites. Samples dominated by cyst cells were characterized by the presence of an abundant polysaccharide envelope.

Snow algae are photosynthetic microbes that inhabit the melting snow surface in alpine and polar regions. We analyzed the pigment and species composition of colored snow collected on Mt. Tateyama in Japan during the melting seasons of 2015 and 2016. High-performance liquid chromatographic analyses of the pigments extracted from the colored snow showed that their composition varied within the study area and were classified into four types: Type A (astaxanthin-monoester dominant), Type B (medium astaxanthin-monoester content), Type C (abundant primary carotenoids and free-astaxanthin), and Type D (abundant primary carotenoids and astaxanthin diesters). Types A and B were most commonly observed in the study area, whereas Types C and D appeared only at specific sites. Analysis of the 18S ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) gene revealed six major amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) of snow algae, belonging to the Sanguina, Chloromonas, and Chlainomonas groups. The relative abundance of the algal ASVs showed that Sanguina was dominant (>48%) in both Types A and B, suggesting that the difference in astaxanthin abundance between the two types was caused by the production of pigments in the algal cells. The algal community structures of Types C and D differed from those of Types A and B, indicating that the primary carotenoids and astaxanthin diesters were derived from certain algal species in these types. Therefore, astaxanthin-rich Sanguina algae mostly induced the red snow that appeared widely in this alpine area; however, they were partially dominated by Chloromonas or Chlainomonas algae, causing different pigment compositions.

To understand the geological origins of minerals in cryoconite and the nutrients sources for microbes on glaciers, we analyzed the Sr–Nd isotopic ratios of the four mineral fractions in cryoconites including saline, carbonate, phosphate, silicate and the organic fraction obtained from Gulkana Glacier in Alaska. The isotopes in the silicate mineral fraction exhibited spatial variation within the glacier (87Sr/86Sr: 0.704533–0.709563, εNd (0): −16.0 to 0.5), which can be explained by the different mixing ratios of the two distinct sources: one of the sources is lateral and terminal moraines or soil, and the other is the medial moraine of the glacier. The minerals in the cryoconite at the lower sites in the glacier are likely derived from the former source, whereas those at the upper sites are from latter sources. The mineralogical and elemental compositions also support mixing of the silicate minerals from the two local sources. The Sr isotopic ratios of the organic fraction also showed spatial variation on the glacier in the middle sites – a trend similar to those of the phosphate fraction. The results suggest that the organic matter is mostly the byproducts of microbes using the phosphate minerals as a nutrient source.

Snow algae are photosynthetic microbes growing in thawing snow. They usually show various morphological cell types. The aim of this study was to carry out microscopic and spectroscopic analysis of different forms of cells of snow algae collected on glaciers in Alaska. Four different shapes of algal cells were observed with the use of bright field LM (Light Microscopy), DIC (Differential Interference Contrast), EDF (Extended Depth Focus), fluorescence microscopy, and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). The cells exhibited the strongest autofluorescence after the exposure to 365-nm excitation light, and the intensity differed among the cell types. Zygotes (cysts) showed the most intense fluorescence. Acridine orange staining revealed the acid nature of the algal cells. The use of Congo red and Calcofluor white fluorochromes indicated differences in the structure of polysaccharides in the cell wall in the individual types of algal cells. FTIR (Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) analyses showed the presence of polysaccharides not only in the algal cells but also in the fixative solution. The presence of polysaccharides in the extracellular algal fraction was confirmed by X-ray dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy imaging (SEM). The differences observed in the structure of the cell wall of the different forms of red snow algae prompt further analysis of this structure.

Cryoconite granules are naturally occurring microbial structures on glacier surfaces worldwide. They play a key role in carbon and nitrogen cycling in glacier ecosystems and can accelerate the melting of snow and ice. However, detailed mechanism of nitrogen cycling in cryoconite granules remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that redox stratification affects the spatial distribution of N cycling processes in cryoconite granules. Based on microsensor measurements for O2, NH4+, NO2– and NO3–, we identified the presence of fine-scale redox stratification within cryoconite granules. Cyanobacteria at the surface layer of the granules created oxic conditions, whereas the inner core of the granules was anoxic. Metatranscriptomic analyses indicated the active occurrences of nitrification in the inner core, whereas denitrification actively occurred both in the inner core and the surface layer of the granules. Cyanobacteria in the inner core of the granules were inactive, and likely dead and being degraded, providing carbon and nitrogen to support nitrifiers and denitrifiers. Quantities of nitrification genes/transcripts were greater in large cryoconite granules than small ones, most likely because nitrogen substrates were more abundantly present in the inner core of large granules due to distinct redox stratification. Our results suggest that the development of a granular structure of cryoconite granules can largely affect carbon and nitrogen cycling on glaciers.

Therefore, we focused on bacterial community from four different granule sizes (30–249 μm, 250–750 μm, 750–1599 μm, more than 1600 μm diameter) in 10 glaciers in northwestern Greenland and their susceptibility to exogenous nutrients in cryoconite hole. A filamentous cyanobacterium Phormidesmis priestleyi, which has been frequently reported from glaciers in Arctic was abundant (10%–26%) across any size of granules on most of glaciers. Bacterial community across glaciers became similar with size increase, and whence smallest size fractions contain more unique genera in each glacier. Multivariate analysis revealed that effect of nutrients to beta diversity is larger in smaller granules (30–249 μm and 250–750 μm diameter), suggesting that bacterial susceptibility to nutrients changes with growth of granule (i.e. P. priestleyi was affected by nitrate in early growth stage).

Correlation coefficients between abundance of major genera and nutrients largely changed with granule size, suggesting that nutrients susceptibility to genera changes with growth process of granule (e.g. P. priestleyi was affected by nitrate in early growth stage).

Glacial meltwater samples were collected from 15 supraglacial ponds at elevations ranging between 3989 and 4292 m above sea level in the debris-covered area of Lirung glacier in central Nepal Himalayas, from November 2010 to October 2011 on a bimonthly basis. We examined elevation trends, and their control by seasonality, dominant geochemical processes, and seasonal dynamics in these supraglacial ponds. Concentration of some parameters showed a decreasing trend with elevation but with high variability and modulation by seasons, being more prevalent in the post-monsoon. Sulfate is the only parameter showing significant elevation trends regardless of the season, although the trend is also affected by the monsoon. The concentrations of major chemical solutes were highest during post-monsoon season and lower in the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons, indicating influence of seasonality on dissolution, dilution, and hydrological processes. Contribution to chemical loads from marine aerosols to these pond water appeared to be minor except for sodium and magnesium. Chemical weathering of carbonate and silicate minerals fueled by dissolution of pyrite appeared as the dominant geochemical processes.

The mineralogical composition of cryoconite on a glacial surface was investigated on six glaciers in northwest Greenland (Qaanaaq Qaqortaq Tugto Bowdoin Sun and Scarlet Heart. The X‑ray diffraction analysis showed that the cryoconites mainly contained seven silicate minerals: hornblende quartz potassium feldspar plagioclase illite kaolinite and chlorite. Semi‑quantitative mineralogical analysis of the silicate mineral composition on the Qaanaaq Glacier showed little variation among the samples collected from five different elevations. This indicates that the minerals on the glacier were probably dominated by dust from a unique source which is recently transported from local sediments including soil and moraine. On the other hand the mineral composition varied significantly among the glaciers. Based on the clay mineral content the glaciers could be classified into three groups. Type A: high clay mineral content composed of illite and kaolinite found on Qaanaaq Qaqortaq and Tugto; Type B: high clay mineral content composed of only kaolinite found on Sun; and Type C: lower clay mineral content composed of only kaolinite found on Bowdoin and Scarlet Heart. The geographical distribution of the types of glaciers did not correspond with the geology in this area indicating that the mineralogical composition is not determined just by the geologi‑ cal conditions around glaciers but also by other factors such as the redistribution of sediments by glacial fluvial or coastal processes.

Cryoconite granules are dark-colored spherical aggregates of organic and inorganic material on glacier ice, and are commonly observed on glaciers the world over. The structure of cryoconite granules on Ürümqi glacier No. 1, Tien Shan, China, was analyzed. Granules were distributed over the entire ice surface of the ablation area, and ranged in size from 0.26 to 3.5 mm (mean 1.1 mm). The granule surface was densely covered with filamentous cyanobacteria. Microscopy of a thin section revealed various inner structures. Most granules had concentric layers of dense organic matter, which are probably derived from annual growth of the granules by the activity of cyanobacteria. The number of layers averaged 3.5 and ranged up to 7, which is likely to indicate their mean and maximum growth ages, respectively. Some granules contained two or more subgranules, showing that small granules had combined and enlarged. Such structures suggest that granule formation was mainly due to the activity of filamentous cyanobacteria, and that the granules repeatedly grew and disintegrated over a cycle of several years on the glacier.

Stable-isotopic ratios of strontium (Sr), neodymium (Nd) and lead (Pb) provide a means of identifying a geological source of substances and are used as tracers of elements in biological and geochemical processes. We analyzed these isotopic ratios of surface dust (cryoconite) collected on Ürümqi glacier No. 1 , Tien Shan, China. The dust was separated chemically into five fractions (four minerals and organic matter), and the isotopic ratios of each fraction were measured. The Sr and Nd isotopic ratios in the fractions extracted with ultrapure water (saline minerals), hydrogen peroxide solution (organic matter) and acetic acid (carbonate minerals) were low and invariable, whereas those extracted by hydrochloric acid (phosphate minerals) and the residual fraction (silicate minerals) were higher. The difference was likely due to the original source of each fraction. The isotopic ratios of the surface dust collected from different sites showed no significant difference, suggesting that they were spatially uniform across the glacier. The isotopic ratios of the silicate fraction were closer to those of desert sand reported in China than those of the soil and bedrock around the glacier. This suggests that the silicate minerals on the glacier were derived from distant deserts. The isotopic ratios in saline, carbonate and phosphate fractions were also close to those of evaporites and apatite in that desert region, suggesting that these minerals were also derived from that source. The Sr isotopic ratios in the organic fraction were closer to ratios in the saline and carbonate fractions rather than the silicate or phosphate fractions and may therefore reflect the isotopic ratios of the elements when they are incorporated into living microbes on the glacier.

Monitoring studies show that many mountain glaciers worldwide are decreasing in mass. An important component of the process of ice mass loss is the effect of dust on albedo and its effect on glacier mass balance. The characteristics of surface dust were investigated in August 2006 on the Urumqi Glacier No. 1 in the Tien Shan Mountains, China. The bare ice surface of the glacier was mostly covered by brown dust. The amounts of surface dust on the ice surface (dry weight) ranged from 86 to 1113 g m−2 (mean: 335 g m−2, standard deviation: = 211), which is within the normal range for Asian glaciers, but significantly greater than those on glaciers in other regions such as Alaska, Patagonia, and the Canadian Arctic. An analysis of organic matter and microscopy of the surface dust revealed that the dust contained high levels of organic matter, including living cyanobacteria. Optical characteristics of the cryoconite collected from nine glaciers in the Himalaya, Tibet and the Arctic (Canada and Svalbard) were analyzed. The spectral light reflectance (visible region) of the cryoconite on the six glaciers in the Arctic and the Himalayawas generally low, indicating high light absorbency (dark coloration) of the cryoconite. In contrast, the spectral reflectances of the cryoconite on the three glaciers in Tibet were significantly higher than on the other glaciers. There was no significant difference in the spectral reflectance of mineral particles contained in the cryoconite between the Tibetan and the other glaciers, indicating that the difference in the albedo of the cryoconites is not due to the mineral particles, but due to organic matter contained in the cryoconite. Chemical analysis of the organic matter in the cryoconites revealed that the light absorbency of cryoconites is due to the amount of humic substances, which are dark-colored organic substances, the residue of bacterial decomposition of organic matter. The cryoconite of the three glaciers in Tibet contained significantly smaller amounts of humic substances than that of the other glaciers, probably due to different biological or chemical conditions. Results show that the formation of the humic substances in the cryoconite affects its optical characteristics, and possibly affects the surface albedo of the glaciers.

N -Acetyl-β- d -glucosaminidase (NAG) is a widely used urinary enzyme for the assessment of renal diseases. We studied the stabilities of NAG isoenzymes in urine at 37°C by enzyme assay and ELISA using a model simulating in vivo conditions. The stabilities were found to be affected by the pH. Under mild acidic condition (about pH 6), there was no significant loss of enzymatic activity of NAG isoenzyme A, enzymatic activity of NAG isoenzyme B and immunological activity of NAG isoenzyme B even after 8 h incubation. In contrast, under alkaline condition (about pH 8), the enzymatic activity of NAG isoenzyme A was rapidly lost, whereas both enzymatic and immunological activities of NAG isoenzyme B were maintained at more than 80% of their initial values. Also, we found that the ratios of endogenous NAG isoenzyme B to total NAG were elevated in alkaline urine samples. These results indicate that NAG isoenzyme A, which is a major isoenzyme in normal urine (pH 5–7), seems to be inactivated in alkaline urine. Our results suggest that for alkaline urine, NAG isoenzyme B should be measured to avoid misinterpretation of total NAG enzymatic activities.

We have developed a new ELISA for quantifying N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase (NAG) isoenzyme B in human urine after raising monoclonal antibodies against the isoenzyme from human placenta. Though the obtained antibodies reacted not only to isoenzyme B but also to A, we could detect isoenzyme B selectively by a two-step sandwich ELISA with a pair of selected antibodies at low pH in the first reaction. The detected limit was 0.5 μg/L for a sample volume of 25 μL. Within-run CVs ranged from 2.5% to 5.4% and between-run CVs ranged from 6.2% to 9.1%. Recoveries of NAG isoenzyme B added to each of three urine samples ranged from 91% to 114%. The dilution curves of urine samples showed good linearity. The cross-reactivity of NAG isoenzyme A was practically negligible (2–3%). The mean value for NAG isoenzyme B in spot urines from healthy adults was 2.9 μg/g creatinine. This ELISA method is rapid and precise enough for routine determination of NAG isoenzyme B in human urine.

Heparin administration to diabetic rats caused no change in VLDL, an increase in IDL and a decrease in LDL on electrophoretic analysis of plasma lipoproteins, while the administration to control rats markedly decreased VLDL and increased IDL and LDL. Both hepatic triglyceride lipase (HTGL) and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activities in the postheparin plasma were lower in the diabetic rats than in the controls, and the reduction of HTGL activity was greater than that of LPL activity in the diabetic rats. The LPL activity in the adipose tissue was lower in the diabetic rats than in the controls, but the activities in the cardiac and skeletal muscles were similar in the two rats. The HTGL-catalyzed fatty acid (FA) releases from the diabetic VLDL and IDL were lower than those from the normal rat VLDL and IDL, while the LPL-catalyzed FA release in the diabetic rats was not different from those in the controls. The decreases in LPL and HTGL activities and the markedly impaired susceptibility of IDL to HTGL coincide well with the postheparin changes in plasma lipoproteins in diabetic rats, an increase in IDL and a decrease in LDL.

The strain-rate cycling test during the Blaha effect measurement at 77–254 K was carried out for four kinds of single crystals: KCl doped with Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+ or Ba2+ as a weak obstacle. It was found that the critical temperature, at which the effective stress is zero, increases when the divalent ionic size approaches increasingly that of the K+ ion. Furthermore, the activation energy for the interaction between a dislocation and the divalent ion-vacancy dipole was determined. The activation energy increases with the divalent ionic size. Fleischer's model attributes this to the difference of tetragonality around the dipole for each specimen.

Mouse complement component C7 was purified from serum by a sequential procedure of fractionation precipitation by ammonium sulfate, followed by DE-52 anion exchange chromatography, Protein G affinity column chromatography, Mono S cation exchange chromatography and Superdex 200 gel filtration. The final product contained a highly purified mouse C7 component showing a single band on SDS-PAGE at the apparent Mrs of 90 kDa and 100 kDa under non-reduced and reduced conditions respectively. The yield of C7, which was measured by the biological activity, was 7.0%.

Optical absorption spectra of electron-irradiated NaCl after consecutive heating steps are measured. Thermal annealing of the localized electron centers and growth of the band (peaking at 2.10 eV) due to sodium clusters are examined using computer analysis of the optical absorption spectrum. It has revealed that the sodium clusters may be nucleated from the N 1 centers, and that the 2.10 eV band is initially composed of two peaks appearing around 1.70 and 2.30 eV, respectively. The oscillation mode of metal aggregates on the basis of dipole-dipole interaction suggests that these two peaks are attributed to the surface plasma oscillation of planar aggregates being formed at the initial stage.

The photostimulated luminescence (PSL) phenomenon induced in copper-doped sodium chloride (NaCl:Cu) and europiumdoped potassium chloride (KCl:Eu) phosphor crystals by excitation with ionizing radiation such as X-rays is studied. The emission mechanism of the PSL in both phosphor crystals is discussed in terms of the recombination of electrons optically stimulated from the radiation-induced F centers with the luminescence centers such as Cu 2+ in NaCl and Eu 3+ ions in KCl. The potentiality of both phosphor crystals as a material for two-dimensional X-ray imaging sensors utilizing the PSL phenomenon is also discussed.

Rats with alloxan-induced diabetes developed severe atherosclerotic lesions when they were maintained on a 0.25% cholesterol diet for one year. The atheromatous changes developed at the aortic arch, appeared as early as 3 months after the start of the experiment, and increased thereafter. The diabetic rats also developed atherosclerosis when they were fed standard rat chow, but the area of the atheromatous lesion was about one tenth of that in rats fed the high-cholesterol diet. Normal rats did not develop atherosclerosis even when fed the high-cholesterol diet for one year. The alloxan diabetic rats showed no increase in body weight, but developed serum glucose levels as high as 600-800 mg/dl as well as high serum cholesterol levels and lower serum HDL-cholesterol levels. The development of atherosclerosis in these rats was significantly related to an increase in the serum cholesterol/phospholipid ratio, the atherogenic index (TC-HDLC/HDLC), and the serum total cholesterol level, but was not related to the serum glucose, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, or lipid peroxide levels. These relationships were found as early as B-16 weeks after the start of the experiment. These data suggest that the serum cholesterol/phospholipid ratio, the atherogenic index, and the total cholesterol level are important risk factors for the development of atherosclerosis in rats with alloxan diabetes.

In vitro glycation of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) reduced the susceptibility to lipoprotein lipase (LPL) as the level of glycation increased. Addition of reduced glutathione to an incubation medium of serum and glucose interfered with glycation of serum proteins when the concentration of reduced glutathione was higher than 10 mM. At concentrations higher than 25 mM, it also significantly prevented the glycation induced reduction of fatty acid releases from VLDL by LPL. There were no such effects on glycation of serum protein and the fatty acid release from the addition of aminoguanidine. By contrast, addition of D-lysine enhanced glycation of serum proteins by glucose and further decreased fatty acid release from VLDL by LPL. From these results, it is suggested that glycation of VLDL decreases the susceptibility of VLDL to LPL. Delayed catabolism of VLDL in diabetic patients is considered partly caused by glycation of apoproteins, which renders VLDL less sensitive to LPL, in addition to the decreased LPL activity in diabetes mellitus.

Alloxan-diabetic rats were kept on an ordinary or 0.25% cholesterol supplemented diet for up to 12 months, and changes in the serum lipid and lipoprotein levels were examined. The diabetic rats showed IRI levels of 3-5 IU/ml, which were 1/5-1/10 that of the normal rats, and about 10 times higher serum glucose levels than the normal rats. The diabetic rats consumed 1.5-2 fold amounts of diet but their body weights were almost constant. The diabetic rats showed marked hyperlipidemia, especially in the cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The phospholipid level also increased but for a lesser extent and the c/p ratio increased. The serum lipoprotein levels increased in the diabetic rats, 5-10 times in the ordinary diet fed groups and 10-20 times in the cholesterol diet fed groups. Chylomicron, VLDL, IDL and LDL increased but HDL decreased. These changes were more significant in the diabetic rats fed the cholesterol diet. The triglyceride levels in the lipoprotein fractions increased in the diabetic rats, but the increase in cholesterol was more significant and the relative composition ratios of triglyceride decreased. The composition ratios of phospholipids, however, remained almost constant in all the lipoprotein fractions. The increase in IDL, especially cholesterol in the IDL fraction, was remarkable in the diabetic rats. The responsiveness of the diabetic rat VLDL to lipoprotein lipase (release of free fatty acids) was less than a half of that of the normal rat VLDL. In conclusion, the diabetic rats showed an increase in triglyceride but more significant increase in cholesterol in the lipoprotein fractions. These changes in serum lipid and lipoprotein levels and compositions appeared as early as 3 months after the alloxan injection and lasted for 12 months without any progress in the disturbance.

An intense optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) has been observed, for the first time, in X-irradiated copper-doped sodium chloride (NaCl:Cu) single crystals. The intensity of the OSL peak at 353 nm is proportional to the optical density of the F centres that are created by X-ray irradiation. This suggests that NaCl:Cu is useful as a material for a two-dimensional X-ray imaging sensor in computed radiography utilizing the OSL phenomenon. A possible reaction responsible for the 353 nm OSL peak is also proposed, based on the recombination of Cu2+ ions with electrons released from the F centres.

The strain-rate cycling test during the Blaha effect at 77–220 K has been carried out for three kinds of single crystals, KCI, KCI doped with Sr2+, and KCI doped with various impurities. The temperature and impurity dependence of the relation between strain-rate sensitivity and stress decrement, as well as the effective stress, τp1, due to only one type of impurity lying on the dislocation with the largest separation, has been investigated. From the temperature dependence of τp1, the force-distance profile between a dislocation and impurities was obtained. The critical temperature,Tc, for KCI: Sr2+ was found to be about 227 K.

The temperature dependence of strain rate sensitivity is investigated superimposing an ultrasonic oscillatory stress during the plastic deformation of KCl single crystals doped with monovalent impurities, Br− and I−. The effective stress due to monovalent weak obstacles which lie on the mobile dislocation with largest separation, is obtained from the plots of the strain rate sensitivity and the stress decrement due to application of the oscillation. It is found from the temperature dependence of the effective stress that the force–distance profile of the interaction between a dislocation and monovalent impurities is a triangle. Die Temperaturabhangigkeit der Verformungsgeschwindigkeit wird fur den Fall untersucht, das eine oszillierende Ultraschallspannung wahrend der plastischen Deformation von KCl-Einkristallen, dotiert mit einwertigen Verunreinigungen, Br− und I−, uberlagert wird. Die effektive Spannung wird aufgrund der einwertigen, schwachen Hindernisse, die auf den beweglichen Versetzungen mit grostem Abstand liegen, aus der Sensibilitat der Verformungsgeschwindigkeit als Funktion des Spannungsdekrements infolge der Oszillation erhalten. Es wird aus der Temperaturabhangigkeit der effektiven Spannung gefunden, das das Spannungs–Abstandsprofil der Wechselwirkung zwischen einer Versetzung und einwertigen Verunreinigungen dreieckig ist.

Thermally stimulated charge emission (TSCE) and thermally stimulated light emission (TSLE) from poled and unirradiated single crystals of LiNbO3 ar recorded simulataneously, when the crystal temperature is varied continuously between 80 and 600 K in vacuum (≈ 10−5 Pa). The TSCE shows sudden changes in intensity coinciding with the TSLE which consists of a series of light pules, so that the TSCE glow curve has many discontinuous points. The peak temperature and intensity of the TSCE, and also the intensity and occurrence of the TSLE depend upon the orientation of the crystal face and the direction of the temperature gradient in the crystal. Most of the light pulses have very short durations and have line-like spectra, the wavelengths of which differ from each other irregularly pulse by pulse, independent of the above conditions and are distributed over the range measured, 200 to 800 nm. Field electron emission and charge carrier recombination may cause most of the TSCE and TSLE, respectively. Thermisch stimulierte Ladungsemission (TSCE) and thermisch stimulierte Lichtemission (TSLE) aus unbestrahlten LiNbO3-Einkristallen werden gleichzeitig registriert, wenn die Temperatur des Kristalls kontinuierlich zwischen 80 und 600 K im Vakuum (10−5 Pa) variiert wird. Die TSCE zeigt plotzliche Wechsel der Intensitat in Koinzidenz mit der TSLE, die aus einer Folge von Lichtpulsen besteht, weshalb die TSCE-Glowkurve aus vielen diskontinuierlichen Punkten besteht. Die Temperatur des Maximums und die Intensitat der TSCE, sowie die Intensititat und Entstehung der TSLE sind nicht nur von der Orientierung der Kristallflache, sondern auch von der Richtung des Temperaturgradienten im Kristall abhangig. Der groste Teil der Impulse hat sehr kurze Dauer und die Spektren bestehen aus linienahnlichen Konstituenten. Ihre Wellenlange ist verschieden von Impuls zu Impuls im Wellenlangenbereich von 200 bis 800 nm, unabhangig von den obengenannten Bedingungen. Feldemission und Ladungstragerrekombination konnen den grosten Teil der TSCE und TSLE verursachen.

The rat anti-mouse erythrocyte (MRBC) monoclonal antibody (mAb), R13, has been developed. The MRBC membrane protein recognized by R13 (R13-Ag) can be pirified by loading the butanol-extracted MRBC membrane solution on a R13-conjugated Cellulofine column in the presence of 0.1% CHAPS followed by elution with 1% CHAPS. The amino acid sequence of the affinity-purified R13-Ag corresponded to that predicted from the cDNA for the murine heat-stable antigen. It was revealed that the actual heat-stable antigen was composed of 27 amino acids.

Hyperphosphatasemia due to increased intestinal type serum alkaline phosphatase was noted in a 48-year-old male who had asymptomatic liver cirrhosis. The alkaline phosphatase activity in the serum was 828 U/l (our reference range in adults: 57–194 U/l), 94% of which was of the intestinal type as measured by an immunoprecipitation method. The intestinal component of alkaline phosphatase was separated into two major and some minor components using electrophoresis and isoelectrofocusing. One of the major components had similar mobility to that of a standard intestinal enzyme purified from adult intestine. The components were heat-labile and neuraminidase-resistant. Serial lectin affinity chromatography, however, indicated that sugar chain compositions of the alkaline phosphatase were different from those of the standard tissue intestinal enzyme. These results and further enzymological studies suggest that the patient's serum alkaline phophatase basically consisted of several intestine-like isoforms.

The optical properties of O2 − centres in KCl∶NaCl mixed crystals were investigated. The timeresolved spectra and the fluorescence decay time are shown. From the measurements of the radiative decay time, the oscillator strength of the absorption,f ab=0.045, the oscillator strength of the fluorescence,f fluo=0.019, and the activation energy ΔE=0.22 eV for the O2 − centre in KCl∶NaCl were determined.

In order to clarify the relationship between composition and lipolytic responses to lipoprotein lipase (LPL), very low density lipoproteine (VLDL) from rats or humans were incubated with a commercially available LPL or with a partially purified LPL from postheparin human plasma and fatty acids released from VLDL were determined in vitro. VLDL from rats fed a diet containing 0.25 cholesterol for 6 months were rich in cholesterol and poor in triglycerides, and released less fatty acids from incubation with LPL than those from control rats. VLDL from normo- and hypertriglyceridemic human subjects were incubated with LPL. The fatty acid release poorly correlated with the apoprotein ratios of VLDL, apo C-III/C-II, B/E, and C/E with the exception of apo B/C, but it correlated well with the ratio of triglyceride/either one of the surface components including total apoproteins, free cholesterol and phospholipids in VLDL or the ratio of the triglyceride/total sum of the surface components. The correlation coefficients between fatty acid release and a ratio of triglyceride/total surface components were 0.774 (using the commercially available LPL) and 0.786 (using the partially purified human LPL). The fatty acid release increased after pretreatment of VLDL with phospholipase A2. The phospholipid content of VLDL was reduced without significant changes in other VLDL components. Thus, the responses of VLDL to LPL treatment may depend mainly upon the surface: core relationship of VLDL rather than its apoprotein composition except in rare clinical cases such as apo C-II deficiency.

The effect of ascorbic acid deficiency on serum and liver cholesterol, phospholipid and triglyceride levels, serum lipoprotein levels and serum lipoprotein cholesterol levels were examined in male rats with a hereditary defect in ascorbic acid synthesis (ODS rats). Male homozygotes (od/od) and male rats of their parent strain (+/+) were each divided into four treatment groups and were fed vitamin C-deficient or vitamin C-replete diets containing either 0 or 0.5% cholesterol. During the 3-wk feeding-period the ODS (od/od) rats fed the vitamin C-deficient diet gradually decreased food intake, resulting in a lower body weight than that of od/od rats given ascorbic acid. The serum cholesterol level was significantly higher in the vitamin C-deficient od/od rats fed the cholesterol diet, and it tended to be higher in those fed the control (0% cholesterol) diet, whereas the liver lipid levels remained unchanged relative to those in od/od rats fed the vitamin C-replete diet. The serum very low density lipoprotein and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels were lower in od/od rats fed the vitamin C-deficient diet without cholesterol, but intermediate density lipoprotein and low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were markedly higher in the vitamin C-deficient od/od rats than in od/od rats given ascorbic acid, regardless of dietary cholesterol level. The ratio of HDL2 cholesterol to HDL3 cholesterol was also higher in the vitamin C-deficient od/od rats. The parent strain of the od/od rats (+/+) showed no change due to vitamin C deficiency. These results suggest that vitamin C deficiency delays low density lipoprotein metabolism and produces hypercholesterolemia in male od/od rats.

Cholesterol and bile acid leves were examined in young (8 weeks), middle-aged (12 months) and old (24 months) germ-free male rats, and young (8 weeks) and middle-aged (12 months) conventional male rats. The plasma cholesterol levels were higher in the aged rats, being more marked in the conventional rats. The liver cholesterol levels also increased with age and the increases were almost identical for both groups. No age-related changes were found in the biliary bile acid secretion, the pool size and distribution of bile acids in the bile, small intestine and large intestine, nor in the turnover frequency of bile acids, but the pool size in the young and middle-aged germ-free rats was much larger than that in the conventional rats. The turnover frequency was less in the germ-free rats. The bile acid synthesis presumed from the fecal bile acid excretion decreased in the aged germ-free rats but not in the conventional rats. A most remarkable age-related change was found in the bile acid composition; cholic acid increased and beta-muricholic acid derived from chenodeoxycholic acid in the rat decreased by aging, resulting in an increase of the CA/CDCA ratio (bile acids belonging to the cholic acid group/bile acids to the chenodeoxycholic acid group) in the bile, feces and pool. These results suggest that cholic acid synthesis increases while chenodeoxycholic acid synthesis is impaired by aging in rats.

The PSL characteristics of UV-irradiated KCl: Eu phosphor for optical memory application were studied. The excitation and emission mechanisms of the 420 nm PSL, which are consistent with the results obtained, are discussed.

Cryoconite is a dark-coloured surface dust deposited on glaciers that consists of wind-blown mineral particles, as well as organic matter derived from microbes living on glaciers. In this paper, we analyse the Sr and Nd isotopic ratios of four mineral fractions (i.e., the saline, carbonate, phosphate, and silicate mineral fractions), as well as the organic fraction, of cryoconite samples obtained from six Asian glaciers (the Altai, Pamir, Tien Shan, Qillian Shan, and Himalayan regions), and discuss their geographical variations in terms of the geological origins of the mineral particles and the biogeochemical processes on the glaciers. The silicate mineral fraction showed lower Sr and higher Nd ratios for the glaciers located to the north (Altai, 87Sr/86Sr: 0.713?490?0.715?284, ?Nd(0): ?6.4 to ?5.6), while higher Sr and lower Nd ratios for the glaciers located to the south (Himalayas, 87Sr/86Sr: 0.740?121?0.742?088, ?Nd(0): ?16.4 to ?15.7); the ratios were similar to those of desert sand, loess, and river sediments in the respective regions of the glaciers. This result suggests that the silicate minerals within the cryoconites were derived from different sources depending on the geographical locations of the glaciers. The isotopic ratios of the saline, carbonate, and phosphate mineral fractions were distinct from those of the silicate fraction, and were similar to those of evaporites and apatite deposits from the Asian deserts, but also varied geographically, indicating that they are likely to reflect their geological origin. The Sr isotopic ratios of the organic fraction were similar to those of the saline and carbonate fractions from glaciers in the central area (Tien Shan and Qillian Shan), but were higher than those of the saline and carbonate fractions, and lower than the phosphate mineral fraction, in the northern and southern areas. The ratios of organic fraction may be determined from the mixing ratio of calcium sources incorporated by microbes on the glaciers.
