Two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) layers are suitable for visible-to-near infrared photodetection owing to their tunable optical bandgaps. Also, their superior mechanical deformability enabled by an extremely small thickness and van der Waals (vdW) assembly allows them to be structured into unconventional physical forms, unattainable with any other materials. Herein, we demonstrate a new type of 2D MoS2 layer-based rollable photodetector that can be mechanically reconfigured while maintaining excellent geometry-invariant photo-responsiveness. Large-area (>a few cm2) 2D MoS2 layers grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) were integrated on transparent and flexible substrates composed of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNs) by a direct solution casting method. These composite materials in three-dimensionally rollable forms exhibited a large set of intriguing photo-responsiveness, well preserving intrinsic opto-electrical characteristics of the integrated 2D MoS2 layers; i.e., light intensity-dependent photocurrents insensitive to illumination angles as well as highly tunable photocurrents varying with the rolling number of 2D MoS2 layers, which were impossible to achieve with conventional photodetectors. This study provides a new design principle for converting 2D materials to three-dimensional (3D) objects of tailored functionalities and structures, significantly broadening their potential and versatility in futuristic devices.

Two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with vertically aligned (VA) layers exhibits significantly enriched surface-exposed edge sites with an abundance of dangling bonds owing to its intrinsic crystallographic anisotropy. Such structural variation renders the material with exceptionally high chemical reactivity and chemisorption ability, making it particularly attractive for high-performance electrochemical sensing. This superior property can be further promoted as far as it is integrated on mechanically stretchable substrates well retaining its surface-exposed defective edges, projecting opportunities for a wide range of applications utilizing its structural uniqueness and mechanical flexibility. In this work, we explored VA-2D MoS2 layers configured in laterally stretchable forms for multifunctional nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensors. Large-area (>cm2) VA-2D MoS2 layers grown by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method were directly integrated onto a variety of flexible substrates with serpentine patterns judiciously designed to accommodate a large degree of tensile strain. These uniquely structured VA-2D MoS2 layers were demonstrated to be highly sensitive to NO2 gas of controlled concentration preserving their intrinsic structural and chemical integrity, e.g., significant current response ratios of ∼160-380% upon the introduction of NO2 at a level of 5-30 ppm. Remarkably, they exhibited such a high sensitivity even under lateral stretching up to 40% strain, significantly outperforming previously reported 2D MoS2 layer-based NO2 gas sensors of any structural forms. Underlying principles for the experimentally observed superiority were theoretically unveiled by density functional theory (DFT) calculation and finite element method (FEM) analysis. The intrinsic high sensitivity and large stretchability of VA-2D MoS2 layers confirmed in this study are believed to be applicable in sensing diverse gas species, greatly broadening their versatility in stretchable and wearable technologies.

Oil spills are a major threat to the marine ecosystem, requiring immediate solutions to remove spilled oil from oceanic environments. In this study, we report a superhydrophobic molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) coated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponge and demonstrate its high proficiency in spilled oil recovery and oil spill detection based on oil-water separation ability. This novel oil sorbent is fabricated by a simple dip-coating to incorporate MoS2 flakes into PDMS sponge. The optimized MoS2-sponge displays a water contact angle of >152°, demonstrating excellent superhydrophobicity and high oil absorption (>97 wt%) for a variety of oils, including vegetable oil and fuel waste. Moreover, the material retains excellent oil absorption capability upon repetitive compression cycles. The versatility of this novel sorbent has been extended for the real-time spontaneous detection of oils by taking advantage of electrically conductive MoS2 layers.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) in the form of MX2 (M: transition metal, X: chalcogen) exhibit intrinsically anisotropic layered crystallinity wherein their material properties are determined by constituting M and X elements. 2D platinum diselenide (2D PtSe2) is a relatively unexplored class of 2D TMDs with noble-metal Pt as M, offering distinct advantages over conventional 2D TMDs such as higher carrier mobility and lower growth temperatures. Despite the projected promise, much of its fundamental structural and electrical properties and their interrelation have not been clarified, and so its full technological potential remains mostly unexplored. In this work, we investigate the structural evolution of large-area chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown 2D PtSe2 layers of tailored morphology and clarify its influence on resulting electrical properties. Specifically, we unveil the coupled transition of structural-electrical properties in 2D PtSe2 layers grown at a low temperature (i.e., 400 °C). The layer orientation of 2D PtSe2 grown by the CVD selenization of seed Pt films exhibits horizontal-to-vertical transition with increasing Pt thickness. While vertically aligned 2D PtSe2 layers present metallic transports, field-effect-transistor gate responses were observed with thin horizontally aligned 2D PtSe2 layers prepared with Pt of small thickness. Density functional theory calculation identifies the electronic structures of 2D PtSe2 layers undergoing the transition of horizontal-to-vertical layer orientation, further confirming the presence of this uniquely coupled structural-electrical transition. The advantage of low-temperature growth was further demonstrated by directly growing 2D PtSe2 layers of controlled orientation on polyimide polymeric substrates and fabricating their Kirigami structures, further strengthening the application potential of this material. Discussions on the growth mechanism behind the horizontal-to-vertical 2D layer transition are also presented.

This study demonstrates the application of Si/C composite fibers as anode materials for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. Using polyacrylonitrile as the carbon precursor, Si/C fibers were prepared through electrospinning and subsequent heat-treating processes. To investigate the correlation between fiber diameter and electrochemical performance, we prepared three electrodes (A, B, C), containing Si/C fibers with ~2 μm, ~1 μm and ~0.1 μm diameters, respectively. Our results revealed that although the composition of all three electrodes was nearly the same, the Si/C fiber based electrodes exhibited better capacity retention when their fiber diameters were smaller. Normalized to the total mass of electrode composite, the solid-state half-cell prepared with the smallest diameter (~0.1 μm) Si/C fibers achieved a reversible specific capacity of ~700 mAh g−1 (normalized to electrode mass) over 70 cycles. We believe that this report can serve as an informative approach toward the utilization of electrospun Si/C fibers as anode materials for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Pseudocapacitive materials offer an opportunity to bridge the energy storage gap between supercapacitor and battery technologies. Herein is chronicled the first report of pseudocapacitance in a system devoid of liquid electrolytes, using the cathode material LiTiS2. It is demonstrated that due to extreme crystallite reduction to less than 3 nm, additional charge storage is derived by reducing surface Ti3+ to Ti2+ at higher voltages and more reversibly than traditionally shown. Due to facile diffusion pathways in 3-fold coordinated lithium along the TiS2 surfaces, disordered LiTiS2 can be used as a singular cathode without conductive additives. The result is a system exhibiting nearly 300 mA h g−1 at a rate of C/2 for 1000 cycles. Whereas active materials in liquid cells typically have size limitations before irreversibilities appear, the high pseudocapacitance demonstrated in this report indicates that active materials used in the solid-state could benefit from size reduction. Hopefully, a new avenue of research stems from this work to investigate mixed conductor nano-domains for solid-state battery/capacitor hybrids. The prospect of a solid-state pseudocapacitor unlocks a series of new applications that offer long shelf life, high temperature capabilities, and enhanced safety.

Microbe-assisted phytoremediation has been considered a promising measure for the remediation of heavy metal-polluted soil. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of diazotrophic plant growth-promoting Herbaspirillum sp. GW103 on growth and lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) accumulation in Zea mays L. The strain GW103 exhibited plant growth-promoting traits such as indole-3-acetic acid, siderophores, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic deaminase. Treatment of Z. mays L. plants with GW103 significantly increased 19, 31, and 52% of plant biomass and 10, 50, and 126% of chlorophyll a contents in Pb, Zn, and Pb + Zn-amended soils, respectively. Similarly, the strain GW103 significantly increased Pb and Zn accumulation in shoots and roots of Z. mays L., which were 77 and 25% in Pb-amended soil, 42 and 73% in Zn-amended soil, and 27 and 84% in Pb + Zn-amended soil. Furthermore, addition of GW103 increased 8, 12, and 7% of total protein content, catalase, and superoxide dismutase levels, respectively, in Z. mays L. plants. The results pointed out that isolate GW103 could potentially reduce the phytotoxicity of metals and increase Pb and Zn accumulation in Z. mays L. plant.

Protein-based hydrogels have received attention for biomedical applications and tissue engineering because they are biocompatible and abundant. However, the poor mechanical properties of these hydrogels remain a hurdle for practical use. We have developed a highly stretchable and notch-insensitive hydrogel by integrating casein micelles into polyacrylamide (PAAm) networks. In the casein-PAAm hybrid gels, casein micelles and polyacrylamide chains synergistically enhance the mechanical properties. Casein-PAAm hybrid gels are highly stretchable, stretching to more than 35 times their initial length under uniaxial tension. The hybrid gels are notch-insensitive and tough with a fracture energy of approximately 3000 J/m2. A new mechanism of energy dissipation that includes friction between casein micelles and plastic deformation of casein micelles was suggested.

We conducted this study to obtain the basic information for forest biomass estimation in a national unit by predicting the carbon dioxide absorption of the early growth of Liriodendron tulipifera based on several fertilization methods. The study site, located in Gimje-si, Jeollabuk-do, consisted of 11 fertilizer treatment plots, repeated three times by species. Five sample trees were planted in each plot, and a total of 165 sample trees of each species were planted. Of these sample trees, every two samples of the L. tulipifera were cut down in order to estimate the biomass. The results were similar to the analysis results for the mean volume. In comparison to the control group with a biomass of 310.35 g, the biomass of the LLF and HLF groups was relatively high, whereas the biomass of the CF and CP groups was relatively low. As a result, the LLF-150 group had the highest biomass at 96.36 g, and all of the treatment groups had higher biomasses than the control group (16.14 g) in the case of branches. In the case of leaves, the HLF-150 group had the highest biomass at 239.48 g and the CP group had the lowest biomass at 115.60 g. In the case of roots, the LLF-150 group had the highest biomass at 495.45 g, and only the CP group (186.82 g) had a lower biomass than the control group (194.90 g).

In this current study, we report on the reduction of noble metal silver into silver nanoparticles using defatted cashew nut shell (CNS) starch as both the reducing and capping agents. Furthermore, it was compared with commercially available silver nanopowder for the first time. Color changes, ultraviolet-visible spectra (433.76nm), X-ray diffraction peaks (2θ=37.8, 46.3, 66.2, and 77.92) revealed the face-centered cubic (fcc) geometry of silver nanoparticles, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy confirmed the presence of elemental silver nanoparticles and the defatted CNS starch silver nanoparticle structures was in accordance to commercial silver nanopowder. The size of both the nanoparticles was found to be similar in the range of 10-50nm as analyzed using high resolution-transmission electron micrographs. The FT-IR spectroscopy revealed the shifting of NH and OH of defatted CNS starch, starch based silver nanoparticle and commercial silver nanopowder has parallel functional groups. The use of environmentally benign and renewable materials like defatted CNS starch offers an alternative to large scale synthesis of silver nanoparticle and includes numerous benefits like eco-friendly and compatibility for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is one of the most serious pathogens of persimmon in Korea. In 2013, 67 isolates of C. gloeosporioides were isolated from infected fruits, leaf and twigs of persimmon (Diosprosi kaki) at Sangju, Gyeongsangbukdo and fungal responses against five fungicides (prochloraz manganese complex, tebuconazole, mancozeb+myclobutanil, fluquinconazole+prochloraz, and tebuconazole+tolyfluanid) were evaluated by their growth on the fungicide-medium. All isolates were inhibited mycelium growth on the medium with each recommended application concentration of flied. () of tebuconazole was from 0.02 to 1.04 and average was 0.31. () of prochloraz manganese complex was 0.02~0.23 average was 0.078. Average values () of Fluquinconazole+Prochloraz (FP) was 0.029. On the basis (), the correlation coefficient (r) between tebuconazole and prochloraz manganese complex, prochloraz manganese complex and FP, tebuconazole and FP were 0.42, 0.44 and 0.27, respectively.

In the present study, we investigated a novel green route for synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using the extract of young cones of Pinus densiflora as a reducing agent. Standard characterization studies were carried out to confirm the obtained product using UV-Vis spectra, SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XRD. TEM images showed that various shapes of ZnO NPs were synthesized, including hexagonal (wurtzite), triangular, spherical, and oval-shaped particles, with average sizes between 10 and 100 nm. The synthesized ZnO NPs blended with the young pine cone extract have very good activity against bacterial and fungal pathogens, similar to that of commercial ZnO NPs.

This study describes an eco-friendly, rapid method for green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) from an aqueous solution of silver nitrate using Pinus densiflora for. multicaulis Uyeki young cone extract in a single-pot process. Color changes, ultraviolet–visible spectra (444.5 nm), X-ray diffraction peaks (2θ = 39.68, 46.92, 68.12, and 79.10), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed the presence of Ag NPs and phytochemicals. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the nanoparticles were mostly oval in shape, with a few triangular-shaped particles. Average particle size was 30–80 nm. Phytochemicals present in the young pine cone extract were likely responsible for the reduction of Ag+ ions. The synthesized Ag NPs (40 μg) had a 7 mm larger zone of inhibition against the skin pathogen Brevibacterium linens than commercial Ag NPs, Propionibacterium acnes (14 mm), Bacillus cereus (9 mm) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (10 mm).

High-energy-density FeS2 cathodes en-abled by a bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI-) anion-based room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) electrolyte are demonstrated. A TFSI-based ionic liquid (IL) significantly mitigates polysulfide dissolution, and therefore the parasitic redox shuttle mechanism, that plagues sulfur-based electrode chemistries. FeS2 stabilization with a TFSI(-) -based IL results in one of the highest energy density cathodes, 542 W h kg(-1) (normalized to cathode composite mass), reported to date.

The first-ever demonstration of stabilized Si/lithium-manganese-rich full cells, capable of retaining >90% energy over early cycling and >90% capacity over more than 750 cycles at the 1C rate (100% depth-of-discharge), is made through the utilization of a modified ionic-liquid electrolyte capable of forming a favorable cathode-electrolyte interface.

Estimating the level of forest biomass accumulation in Korea is a challenging task because of historical reasons and the later reforestation implemented at the national level. Nevertheless, systematic national forest inventories and direct field measurements make it possible to estimate the carbon (C) sinks as well as their distribution. Simple linear relationships between the stand biomass and stand volume were developed for each forest type (coniferous, deciduous and mixed forests) in Korea based on direct field measurements. These relationships were used to estimate the changes in C accumulation of the above-ground and total biomass from 1954 to 2007 based on the national forest inventories. The mean C density and C stock of the above-ground biomass for all forest types increased from 3.49 Mg C ha−1 and 16.71 Tg C in 1954 to 31.46 Mg C ha−1 and 196.45 Tg C in 2007, respectively, and the total biomass for all forest types increased from 4.29 Mg C ha−1 and 20.57 Tg C in 1954 to 38.58 Mg C ha−1 a...

Optimized performance of silicon-ionic- liquid lithium-ion batteries through the implementation of a new electrode-microgeometry. The incorporation of 1D silicon nanowires into the cyclized-polyacrylonitrile-based electrode-architecture allows for greatly improved active material utilization, higher rate capabilities, and reduced interfacial reactions.

A novel nano-scale manipulator capable of handling low-dimensional materials with three-dimensional linear motion, gripping action, and push–pull action of the gripper was developed for an in situ experiment in transmission electron microscopy. X-Y-Z positioning and push–pull action were accomplished by a piezotubing system, combined with a specially designed assembly stage that consisted of a lever-action gripping tip backed by a push–pull piezostack. The gripper tip consisted of tungsten wire fabricated by electrochemical etching followed by a focused ion beam process. Performance of the nano-scale manipulator was demonstrated in a grab-and-pick test of a single silver nanowire and in an in situ tensile test of a pearlitic steel sample with a specific orientation.

A series of novel cyclopenta[d][1,2]-oxazine derivatives was prepared and evaluated for their inhibitory activity toward protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP-1B). Compound 6s was found to be an inhibitor of PTP-1B with nanomolar IC50 value and high level of selectivity over other recombinant phosphatases.

Several series of compounds (benzoic acids, pyrazolecarboxylic acids, phenoxyacetic acids, and quinolinoxyacetic acids) were prepared and evaluated for their inhibitory activity against PTP-1B. Several compounds showed submicromolar inhibitory activity.

The ever-growing demand for high capacity cathode materials is on the rise since the futuristic applications are knocking on the door. Conventional approach to developing such cathode relies on the lithium-excess materials to operate the cathode at high voltage and extract more lithium-ion. Yet, they fail to satiate the needs because of their unresolved issues upon cycling such as, for lithium manganese-rich layered oxides—their voltage fading, and for as nickel-based layered oxides—the structural transition. Here, in contrast, lithium-deficient ratio is demonstrated as a new approach to attain high capacity at high voltage for layered oxide cathodes. Rapid and cost effective lithiation of a porous hydroxide precursor with lithium deficient ratio is acted as a driving force to partially convert the layered material to spinel phase yielding in a multiphase structure (MPS) cathode material. Upon cycling, MPS reveals structural stability at high voltage and high temperature and results in fast lithium-ion diffusion by providing a distinctive solid electrolyte interface (SEI) chemistry—MPS displays minimum lithium loss in SEI and forms a thinner SEI. MPS thus offers high energy and high power applications and provides a new perspective compared to the conventional layered cathode materials denying the focus for lithium excess material.

We are currently in the midst of a race to discover and develop new battery materials capable of providing high energy-density at low cost. By combining a high-performance Si electrode architecture with a room temperature ionic liquid electrolyte, here we demonstrate a highly energy-dense lithium-ion cell with an impressively long cycling life, maintaining over 75% capacity after 500 cycles. Such high performance is enabled by a stable half-cell coulombic efficiency of 99.97%, averaged over the first 200 cycles. Equally as significant, our detailed characterization elucidates the previously convoluted mechanisms of the solid-electrolyte interphase on Si electrodes. We provide a theoretical simulation to model the interface and microstructural-compositional analyses that confirm our theoretical predictions and allow us to visualize the precise location and constitution of various interfacial components. This work provides new science related to the interfacial stability of Si-based materials while granting positive exposure to ionic liquid electrochemistry.

A new concept of pairing an active material and a mixed conductor is explored as a solid-state battery electrode. By imbedding nano-FeS2 domains into an amorphous LiTiS2 matrix, a hybrid power-energy system is achieved while additionally improving upon many common solid electrode design flaws. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy is used to probe the active material/mixed conductor interface over the course of cycling. Arguably the most beneficial development is enhancement of charge transfer, manifesting in a significantly increased exchange current as captured in a Tafel analysis. By developing a solution to active material isolation and creating a more homogenous electrode design, cycling at a high rate of C/2 for 500 cycles is obtained. Additionally, the electrode can recover full capacity simply by reducing system rate. Capacity recovery implicates a lack of active material isolation, a common problem in solid-state batteries.

The observed line shapes are rationalized in terms of the local symmetry of the various metal atom sites. An indication of the sensitivity of chemical shifts of the various metal cations to local chemical structure is given. In addition, 1 H CRAMPS NMR spectra of some zirconium and titanium salts that are used as precursors in the production of electrical materials are discussed

The antifungal activity of bacterial strains Bacillus subtilis EF 617317 and B. licheniformis EF 617325 was demonstrated against sapstaining fungal cultures Ophiostoma flexuosum, O. tetropii, O. polonicum, and O. ips in both in vitro and in vivo conditions. The crude active supernatant fractions of 7 days old B. subtilis and B. licheniformis cultures inhibited the growth of sapstaining fungi in laboratory experiments. Thermostability and pH stability of crude supernatants were determined by series of experiments. FT-IR analysis was performed to confirm the surface structural groups of lipoproteins present in the crude active supernatant. Partial purification of lipopeptides present in the crude supernatant was done by using Cellulose anion exchange chromatography and followed by Sephadex gel filtration chromatography. Partially purified compounds significantly inhibited the sapstaining fungal growth by in vitro analysis. The lipopeptides responsible for antifungal activity were identified by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry after partial purification by ion exchange and gel filtration chromatography. Four major ion peaks were identified as m/z 1023, 1038, 1060, and 1081 in B. licheniformis and 3 major ion peaks were identified as m/z 1036, 1058, and 1090 in B. subtilis. In conclusion, the partially purified lipopeptides may belong to surfactin and iturin family. In vivo analysis for antifungal activity of lipopeptides on wood was conducted in laboratory. In addition, the potential of extracts for fungal inhibition on surface and internal part of wood samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy.
