We have determined Δ′26MgDSM-3, the mass-independent variations in 26Mg/24Mg, of primitive, bulk meteorites to precisions better than ±3 ppm (2se). Our measurements of samples from 10 different chondrite groups show Δ′26MgDSM-3 that vary from −5 to 22 ppm. Our data define an array with a positive slope in a plot of Δ′26MgDSM-3 against 27Al/24Mg, which can be used to determine (26Al/27Al)0, i.e. initial 26Al/27Al, and (Δ′26MgDSM-3)0, i.e. initial Δ′26MgDSM-3. On such an isochron plot, the best fit of our new measurements combined with literature data implies (26Al/27Al)0 of (4.67±0.78)×10−5 and (Δ′26MgDSM-3)0 of −31.6 ± 5.7 ppm (2se) for ordinary and carbonaceous chondrites, other than CR chondrites, which have anomalously low Δ′26MgDSM-3. These parameters are within uncertainty of those defined by previous measurements of bulk calcium-, aluminium-rich inclusions (CAIs) that set canonical (26Al/27Al)∼05×10−5. The most straightforward interpretation of all these observations is that differences in the Al/Mg of bulk ordinary and carbonaceous chondrites are dominantly controlled by variable contributions of early-formed refractory and major silicate components derived from a common, canonical reservoir. The Δ′26MgDSM-3 of enstatite chondrites are slightly more radiogenic (∼3 ppm) at similar Al/Mg to the ordinary chondrites. We speculate that this is related to the timing of removal of a refractory component from the source reservoirs of these different meteorite groups; the higher Δ′26MgDSM-3 of the enstatite chondrites suggests later (∼0.5 Ma post CAIs) condensation and loss of this refractory component. Despite inferred consistency of (26Al/27Al)0 and (Δ′26MgDSM-3)0 across most chondrite groups, some nebular heterogeneity is required to account for the compositions of CR chondrites. Our preferred interpretation is that the CR source region has lower (Δ′26MgDSM-3)0. As the most appropriate isotopic reference for the Earth, our new mean enstatite chondrite composition allows us to assess possible ingrowth of 26Mg from live 26Al during accretion of the Earth. The Earth has Δ′26MgDSM-3 within uncertainty of enstatite chondrites, despite its higher Al/Mg. This requires that the terrestrial increase in Al/Mg, which we attribute to vapour loss during accretion, must have happened >1.5 Ma post CAI formation, in an instantaneous fractionation model.

This study presents lithium and magnesium isotope ratios of soils and their drainage waters from a well-characterised weathering experiment with two soil cores, one with olivine added to the surface layer, and the other a control core. The experimental design mimics olivine addition to soils for CO2 sequestration and/or crop fertilisation, as well as natural surface addition of reactive minerals such as during volcanic deposition. More generally, this study presents an opportunity to better understand how isotopic fractionation records weathering processes. At the start of the experiment, waters draining both cores have similar Mg isotope composition to the soil exchangeable pool. The composition in the two cores evolve in different directions as olivine dissolution progresses. Mass balance calculations show that the water δ26Mg value is controlled by congruent dissolution of carbonate and silicates (the latter in the olivine core only), plus an isotopically fractionated exchangeable pool. For Li, waters exiting the base of the cores initially have the same isotope composition, but then diverge as olivine dissolution progresses. For both Mg and Li, the transport down-core is significantly retarded and fractionated by exchange with the exchangeable pool. This observation has implications for the monitoring of enhanced weathering using trace elements or isotopes, because dissolution rates and fluxes will be underestimated during the time when the exchangeable pool evolves towards a new equilibrium.

A new iridoid glycoside, named physaloside A (1), together with one known iridoid glycoside (swertiamarin, 2), was isolated from the EtOAc extract of Physochlaina physaloides (L.) G. Don. The structure elucidation of 1 was carried out by 1D NMR (1H and 13C NMR) and 2D NMR (COSY, HSQC, HMBC, and NOESY) spectral analysis. Antibacterial activities of the compounds were evaluated against various bacteria.

A new compound, named cymbadahoside A (1), was isolated from the EtOAc extract of Cymbaria dahurica. The structure of cymbadahoside A was identified by UV, IR, ESI-MS, and 1D and 2D NMR.

Although mechanical ventilation (MV) is indispensable to life-support therapy in critically ill patients, it may promote or aggravatelunginjury known asventilator-inducedlunginjury(VILI). 6-Gingerol is the principal ingredient of ginger with potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in various diseases. Nevertheless, the role and mechanism of 6-gingerol in the process of VILI has not been explicitly investigated. In the study, we found that pre-treatment with 6-gingerol significantly improved the histological changes and pulmonary oedema, inhibited neutrophil accumulation and the release of early pro-inflammatory cytokines and MPO, and reduced oxidative stress reactions after high MV. Moreover, 6-gingerol treatment also increased PPARγ expression and decreased NF-κB activation in rats subjected to high MV. Furthermore, GW9662, a specific PPARγ inhibitor, was demonstrated to activatethe NF-κB pathway and cancele the protective role of 6-gingerol in VILI. This indicates that 6-gingerol exerted anti-inflammatory and antioxidative stress effects in VILI by activating PPARγ and inhibiting the NF-κBsignalling pathway.

An electrochemical sensor based on β-cyclodextrin-cobalt ferrite nanocomposite was developed for the sensitive detection of catechol (CT). To construct the base of the sensor, a novel composite was initially fabricated and used as the substrate material by combining cobalt ferrite nanocomposite and β-cyclodextrin via a simple sonication-induced assembly. Due to the high catechol-loading capacity on the electrode surface and the upstanding electric conductivity of cobalt ferrite nanocomposite, the electrochemical response of the fabricated sensor was greatly enhanced and displayed excellent analytical performance for catechol detection from 1 to 200 μM with a low detection limit of 0.12 μM (S/N = 3). Moreover, the developed electrochemical sensor exhibited good selectivity and acceptable reproducibility and could be used for the detection of catechol in water samples.

International audience; he time of the metal–silicate differentiation of the Eagle Station pallasite (ESP) parent body was investigated using the 26Al–26Mg short-lived chronometer (half-life of 0.72 Myr). The Mg isotope ratios were measured in ESP olivines by both MC–SIMS and HR-MC–ICPMS, allowing us to check the consistency between the results given by two different analytical protocols and data reduction processes. Results show that the two datasets are consistent, with a (δ26Mg*)av. value of –0.003 (± 0.005)‰ (2 s.e., n = 89). Such a value, associated with data from the 182Hf–182W short-lived systematics (half-life of 8.9 Myr), indicates an ESP parent body metal–silicate differentiation occurring most likely at least at ∼ 2 Ma, but possibly 4 Ma, after CAI formation. From the 27Al/24Mg ratios measured in ESP olivines using MC–SIMS, the duration of the olivine crystallization process was inferred to have lasted over ∼ 275 kyr if the core has differentiated as early as 2 Ma after CAIs, while in the case of a core differentiation occurring 4 Ma after CAIs, the silicate–silicate differentiation should have lasted for another 4 Myr.

As shown in previous studies, the stepwise dissolution with increasing acid strengths of bulk rock carbonaceous chondrites liberates Cr with both excesses and deficits in 53 Cr and 54 Cr relative to the terrestrial standard. The magnitude of the 54 Cr variations within a meteorite decreases in the sequence CI1 > CR2 > CM2 > CV3 > CO3 > CK4 and correlates with the degree of metamorphism of each carbonaceous chondrite class. This study shows that the Tagish Lake meteorite presents the highest excesses in 54 Cr ever measured in a bulk silicate phase. According to this study, the Tagish Lake meteorite is composed of the least re-equilibrated material known at this time. The magnitude of 54 Cr variation decreases now in the following sequence: Tagish Lake (ungrouped CI2) > Orgueil (CI1) > Murchison (CM2) > Allende (CV2). Moreover, this study shows that excesses in 53 Cr relative to Earth can be interpreted as representing the extent of aqueous alteration on meteorite parent bodies. Finally, the high 54 Cr anomalies measured in this meteorite make Tagish Lake one of the major targets to decipher the host of these anomalies.
