The degradation time is a crucial factor in evaluating the performance of poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) stents. Bulk degradation mode was commonly used to analyze the stent degradation behavior by finite element approach. However, the PLGA stents may present surface degradation more than bulk degradation under certain conditions, which will greatly affect the degradation time after implantation. In this study, the degradation processes of the poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) stent were reproduced utilizing finite element analysis. Both bulk degradation and surface degradation modes were considered. The correlation between tensile stress and degradation rate was investigated. The degradation time was analyzed selectively. The stress distribution, fracture, and mass loss were also compared between bulk degradation mode and surface degradation mode. The simulation results showed that, in both evolution modes, the degradation began at the 'peak-valley' region and fracture occurred at the cross of links and rings. Additionally, high levels of Von-Mises stress were observed in these two regions. Compared with bulk degradation, the fracture time of the stent was delayed by 63% in the surface degradation mode. In conclusion, the mass loss rate and scaffolding period showed great differences between surface degradation and bulk degradation. Based on this study, it is suggested that bulk degradation mode is not applicable to the case of inadequate water uptake mode, such as the tracheal stent degradation process. More experimental research should be carried out to accurately predict the scaffolding period after implantation. The mechanical properties of the fracture zone should be strengthened.

Summary As the country with the world's largest coal power capacity, China is launching a national carbon market. How the carbon pricing may contribute to phasing out China's coal power is a great concern. We collect full-sample data set of China's 4540 operating coal plant units and develop a stochastic Monte-Carlo financial model to assess the financial sustainability of the plant operation. Although China's coal plants have long residual technical lifetime, their operations are close to the break-even state. Even with low carbon price of 50 CNY/tCO2 growing at 4%/y and the permits being fully auctioned, the average residual lifetime of all the plants will be reduced by 5.43 years, and the cumulative CO2 emission from 2020 to 2050 will be reduced by 22.73 billion ton. This study measured the particle concentrations with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 2.5 μm (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and relative humidity (RH) at five metro subway stations in Suzhou's subway system (Lines 1 and 2). The real-time monitoring campaign was conducted from March 30th to April 10th and August 4th to August 21st, 2015. The monitoring practice was carried out during rush (7:00-9:00 AM and 17:00-19:00 PM) and regular hours (other times) at the ground and underground levels under different weather conditions with a purpose of obtaining representative data. The monitored results show that the concentrations of PM2.5 in the train carriages were lower than the concentrations at the underground platforms during both spring and summer. The mean PM2.5 concentrations at all the underground platforms in all the sub-stations monitored were significantly higher than those at the ground level. The human health impact was calculated to be 6300 annual DALYs (or 375 deaths) due to exposure to the subway system in Suzhou according to the UNEP-SETAC toxicity (USEtox) model. Linear regression models were applied to evaluate the relationships between the PM2.5, NO2 concentrations, and RH. We found that a 10% increment in RH from the current average level of 50-60% can lead to a 9.8 μg m-3 concentration decrease in PM2.5. This further results in the total human health impact being reduced to 2451 DALYs (150-4753 DALYs), representing a 20% decrease (1.2-38%).

Strontium ferrite with Nd3+, Al3+ and Ca2+ substitution of Fe3+ and Sr2+ ions were prepared by the conventional solid phase reaction process. The Nd3+ substitution shows 10 %–20 % improvement in coercivity for the substitution content less than 10 %. The Ca2+ substitution is favorable to the enhancement of saturation magnetization due to the accelerated reaction of Fe2O3 and SrCO3. The samples with Al3+ substitution of Fe3+ show the lowest saturation magnetization, although the highest coercivity was achieved for a homogeneous grain size less than 1 μm. The combinatory substitution Nd3+, Ca2+ and Al3+ leads to the optimum magnetic properties with σ s=52 A m2/kg and H cj=412 kA/m.

CoFe2O4 ferrites were synthesized sol–gel with cobalt chloride, ferric chloride and citric acid as the main raw material. X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer and simultaneous thermal analysis were applied to character the structure and magnetic properties of traditional and microwave calcined samples. The samples with pH 5 and molar ratio of citric acid to metal nitrate 1–1.2 showed the optimal structure and magnetic properties. Microwave calcination reduces the synthesis time from 2 h for conventional calcination to 15–30 min. The saturation magnetization (σs) for sample microwave-calcined at 550 °C for 30 min reaches to 75.89 emu/g, much higher than that of conventional-calcined samples.

The selective γ-aminobutyric acid B-subtype receptor agonist baclofen activates both presynaptic and postsynaptic receptors in the brain. Microinjection of baclofen into the nucleus of the solitary tract increases arterial pressure, heart rate, and sympathetic nerve discharge consistent with inhibition of the arterial baroreflex. The magnitude of these responses is enhanced in hypertension and is associated with increased postsynaptic GABA B receptor function. We tested whether a presynaptic mechanism contributes to the enhanced baclofen inhibition in hypertension. Whole-cell recordings of second-order baroreceptor neurons, identified by 4-(4-(dihexadecylamino)styryl)- N -methylpyridinium iodide labeling of aortic nerve, were obtained in brainstem slices from normotensive control and renal-wrap hypertensive rats. The dorsal periaqueductal gray (dPAG) is an essential neural component for central integration of defense behavior and associated autonomic regulation. Electrical and chemical stimulation of this region results in a significant decrease of inspiratory (Ti) and expiratory (Te) breathing durations. In the present study it was hypothesized that breath timing changes elicited by dPAG activation would modulate respiratory load compensation volume-timing reflexes. The effect of dPAG activation of breathing pattern was investigated using chemical stimulation with microinjection of the excitatory amino acid D,L-homocysteic acid (DLH) or disinhibition with GABA(A) (gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptor antagonist bicuculline (BIC) in urethane-anesthetized, spontaneously breathing rats. Volume-timing reflexes were studied using inspiratory and expiratory occlusion before and after DLH or BIC dPAG activation. Both BIC and DLH activation of the dPAG significantly increased breathing frequency. Inspiratory occlusion significantly increased Ti before dPAG activation and DLH and BIC potentiated the relative increase in Ti during occlusion. BIC elicited a greater increase in inspiratory occlusion Ti than DLH. Inspiratory occlusion alone also significantly increased diaphragm EMG activity and this response was potentiated with dPAG activation. Expiratory occlusion significantly increased Te and DLH and BIC potentiated the relative increase in Te during expiratory occlusion. These results suggest that dPAG activation modulates the respiratory neural network, resulting in an increased respiratory drive and a decrease in volume-timing reflex sensitivity.

Microinjection of the inhibitory neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid B-subtype receptor agonist baclofen into the nucleus tractus solitarius increases arterial blood pressure and sympathetic nerve discharge. The baclofen-induced pressor response is enhanced in chronic hypertension. We hypothesized that a postsynaptic mechanism contributes to the enhanced responses to baclofen in hypertension. We investigated the postsynaptic effect of baclofen on second-order baroreceptor neurons, identified by 1,1′-dilinoleyl-3,3,3′,3′-tetra-methylindocarbocyanine, 4-chlorobenzenesulphonate labeling of the aortic nerve, in nucleus tractus solitarius slices from sham-operated normotensive and unilateral nephrectomized, renal-wrap hypertensive rats. Norepinephrine (NE) is an important neurotransmitter in central autonomic regulation. Peripheral chemoreceptor stimulation activates central noradrenergic structures. These structures innervate and therefore could modulate neurons in caudal nucleus tractus solitarius (cNTS), which receives the first central projections from peripheral chemoreceptors. However, the role of alpha(1)-adrenoreceptors in synaptic transmission of peripheral chemoreceptor inputs in cNTS is unknown. We investigated the responses to activation of alpha(1)-adrenoreceptors on glutamatergic and GABAergic inputs in NTS slices using whole-cell recording. Second-order neurons were identified by 1,1'-dilinoleyl-3,3,3',3'-tetra-methylindocarbocyanine, 4-chlorobenzenesulphonate (DiA) labeling of carotid bodies. Electrical stimulation of ipsilateral tractus solitarius was used to evoke excitatory postsynaptic currents (eEPSCs), whereas inhibitory postsynaptic currents were evoked (eIPSCs) by electrically stimulating NTS near the recorded neuron. Application of alpha(1)-adrenoreceptor agonist phenylephrine (PE) at 20 microM significantly decreased amplitudes of eEPSCs (78 +/- 1% of control; n = 16; p < 0.01), and it increased amplitudes of eIPSCs (120 +/- 13% of control; n = 7; p < 0.01). Both effects were blocked by the alpha(1)-adrenoreceptor antagonist prazosin at 10 microM. PE did not change holding current, input resistance, and current-voltage relationship in cNTS neurons. PE significantly changed paired pulse ratios of eEPSC/eIPSCs, increased the frequency of miniature IPSCs (329 +/- 10% of control; n = 6; p < 0.05), but it decreased that of miniature EPSCs (69 +/- 6% of control; n = 5; p < 0.01). PE-induced inhibition of eEPSCs was independent of N-methyl-D-aspartate or GABA(B) receptors. These results suggest that activation of alpha(1)-adrenoreceptors reduces excitatory and enhances inhibitory inputs to second-order peripheral chemoreceptor neurons in cNTS via a presynaptic mechanism. These actions result in the inhibition of synaptic transmission and could play a role in the autonomic responses to hypoxia.
