Abstract Proteinous drugs are highly promising therapeutics to treat various diseases. However, they suffer from limited circulation times and severe off-target side effects. Inspired by active membraneless organelles capable of dynamic recruitment and releasing of specific proteins, here, we present the design of coacervates as therapeutic protocells, made from small metabolites (anionic molecules) and simple arginine-rich peptides (cationic motif) through liquid-liquid phase separation. These complex coacervates demonstrate that their assembly and disassembly can be regulated by redox chemistry, which helps to control the release of the therapeutic protein. A model proteinous drugs, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), can rapidly compartmentalize inside the complex coacervates, and the coacervates formed from peptides conjugated with arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) motif (a fibrinogen-derived peptide sequence), show selective binding to the thrombus site and thus enhance on-target efficacy of tPA. Furthermore, the burst release of tPA can be controlled by the redox-induced dissolution of the coacervates. Our proof-of-principle complex coacervate system provides insights into the sequestration and release of proteinous drugs from advanced drug delivery systems and represents a step toward the construction of synthetic therapeutic protocells for biomedical applications.

Semen Cuscutae (S) is an effective traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in clinical practice for tonifying the kidney and calming the fetus. The effects of S on benefiting the kidney, fixing essence and calming the fetus were enhanced after salt processed. However, its bioactive substance and relevant mechanism have not been clearly yet. This study aims to explore the effective components of Semen Cuscutae processed with salt solution (Y) and its potential mechanism on the treatment of kidney deficiency miscarriage (KDM) with multi-components and multi-targets. In this study, serum pharmacochemistry and network pharmacology were used to investigate the active ingredients and molecular mechanism of Y in improving kidney deficiency abortion. A rat model of kidney deficiency miscarriage was established using hydroxyurea combine with mifepristone to assess the effect of S on tonifying the kidney and calming the fetus. The results show that 13 active ingredients derived from Y were identified by serum pharmacochemistry analysis. 92 common targets of active ingredients of Y and diseases were screened by network pharmacology, including 18 key targets (TP53, AKT1, TNF, IL6, VEGFA, CASP3, JUN, EGFR, etc). The KEGG pathway enrichment analysis showed that it was mainly concentrated in PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, and it was speculated that Y may protect pregnancy through PI3K/AKT and other signaling pathways with multi-component, multi-target and multi-pathway action characteristics. Animal pharmacodynamic analysis suggested that Y showed the better effect on the hydroxyurea combine with mifepristone induced abortion compared to the raw products of S. This study laid the foundation to identify the active components and potential mechanisms of Y in improving KDM by combining the in-tegrated methods of serum pharmacochemistry and network pharmacology.

Wuzi Yanzong Wan (WZYZW) is a classic formula for tonifying the kidneys in Traditional chinese medicine (TCM) and is widely used clinically in diseases of the reproductive system, immune system and nervous system. Therefore, the quality control and prediction quality markers (Q-markers) of WZYZW is of positive significance.In this study, We first established the fingerprints, calibrated 28 common peaks, identified 12 common peaks of gallic acid, geniposidic acid, chlorogenic acid, ellagic acid, rutin, hyperoside, verbascoside, astragalin, kaempferol, schisandrol A, schisandrol B and schisandrin B, and the similarity was greater than 0.9 of 10 batches.Then, withing network pharmacology, we screened 41 core targets such as PIK3CA, AKT1, PIK3CB, potential pathways such as pathways in cancer and PI3K-Akt signalling pathway of 12 components. The results showed that they were tightly connected to predicated targets and pathways. Finally, by using the hyperoside as internal reference standard, a Quantitative analysis of multi-components (QAMS) for WZYZW was established to determine the contents of WZYZW. The percent difference(%) showed that there was no significant difference between the quantitative results of external standard method (ESM) and QAMS method. Contents of the 11 components above were 0.0091 ∼ 0.0185 %, 0.1019 ∼ 0.1361 %, 0.0518 ∼ 0.0718 %, 0.0130 ∼ 0.0320 %, 0.0084 ∼ 0.0190 %, 0.0621 ∼ 0.1192 %, 0.0127 ∼ 0.0419 %, 0.0006 ∼ 0.0089 %, 0.0212 ∼ 0.0261 %, 0.0061 ∼ 0.0400 %, 0.0084 ∼ 0.0103 %, respectively. Overall, the method developed was applied to the quality evaluation and Q-markers research of WZYZW as well as provided guiding significance for the Q-marker research of TCM.

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) has been widely used to realize daily human–machine interactions. Face masks have become everyday wear in our post-pandemic life, and speech through masks may have impaired the ASR. This study explored the effects of different kinds of face masks (e.g., surgical mask, KN95 mask, and cloth mask) on the Mandarin word accuracy of two ASR systems with or without noises. A mouth simulator was used to play speech audio with or without wearing a mask. Acoustic signals were recorded at distances of 0.2 m and 0.6 m. Recordings were mixed with two noises at a signal-to-noise ratio of +3 dB: restaurant noise and speech-shaped noise. Results showed that masks did not affect ASR accuracy without noise. Under noises, masks did not significantly influence ASR accuracy at 0.2 m but had significant effects at 0.6 m. The activated-carbon mask had the most significant impact on ASR accuracy at 0.6 m, reducing the accuracy by 18.5 percentage points compared to that without a mask, whereas the cloth mask had the least effect on ASR accuracy at 0.6 m, reducing the accuracy by 0.9 percentage points. The acoustic attenuation of masks on the high-frequency band at around 3.15 kHz of the speech signal attributed to the effects of masks on ASR accuracy. When training ASR models, it may be important to consider mask robustness.

Aromatic oxazolines are versatile in organic synthesis as directing groups, ligands, and protected carboxylic acids. Developing efficient approaches to oxazoline from an aromatic C–H bond is more desirable compared to the established protocols from carboxylic acid and its equivalents. Herein, a simple and efficient aromatic C–H oxazolination with broad substrate scope is described. By employing this transformation as an enabling step, diversity-oriented synthesis of functionalized arenes and target-oriented synthesis of four drugs were accomplished. Mechanistic experiments suggest that this aromatic oxazolination is an electrophilic aromatic substitution. It is anticipated that this transformation will find applications in aromatic C–H functionalization with oxazoline either as a removable directing group or as a masked carboxylic acid.

Electrocatalytic upgrading of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) provides a promising way to obtain both high-value-added biomass-derived chemicals and clean energy. However, development of efficient electrocatalysts for oxidizing HMF with depressed side reactions remains a challenge. Herein, we report a nickel-phytic acid hybrid (Ni-PA) using natural phytic acid as building block for highly efficient electrocatalytic oxidation of HMF to 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Due to the coordination of nickel ion and phosphate groups of phytic acid molecule, high selectivity and yield of FDCA were achieved at 1.6 V vs. RHE. Besides, Ni-PA has a higher electrochemical surface area and lower charge-transfer resistance than Cu/Fe-PA, which significantly promotes the oxidation of HMF to FDCA. This work demonstrates the potential of metal-phytic acid hybrids as effective electrocatalysts for biomass valorization.

Photocatalytic NO removal is usually accompanied by the generation of NO2, an intermediate with a higher toxicity than NO. Therefore, it is critically important to develop new photocatalysts capable of NO selective conversion. Herein, we report on the synergistic roles of cyano and hydroxyl functional groups in photocatalytic NO removal. According to the results, the NO2 production efficiencies on cyano/hydroxyl-group-modified g-C3N4 (DCN-O-R) was limited to 4.8%, which was lower than that of cyano-group-modified g-C3N4 (DCN, 38.6%) and pure g-C3N4 (CN, 50.0%). Meanwhile, the photocatalytic NO conversion efficiency over DCN-O-R was higher than that of DCN and g-C3N4. It was found that the insertion of cyano groups favorably changes the energy band of g-C3N4 towards the generation of •O2−. NO can only be oxidized to NO2 by the photogenerated holes. When NO2 is adsorbed on the surface of hydroxyl groups, it can be further oxidized to the product NO3− by •O2−. The synergistic effect of bifunctional groups regulates the conversion pathway from NO→NO2 to NO→NO2→NO3−. This work provides a strategy to abate toxic intermediates during the NO removal process, underlining the importance of surface/interface molecular engineering in regulating catalytic reaction pathways.

Ovarian cancer is the deadliest gynecological malignancy of the reproductive organs in the United States. Cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) is an important cell cycle regulatory protein that specifically controls the G2/M phase transition of the cell cycle. RO-3306 is a selective, ATP-competitive, and cell-permeable CDK1 inhibitor that shows potent anti-tumor activity in multiple pre-clinical models. In this study, we investigated the effect of CDK1 expression on the prognosis of patients with ovarian cancer and the anti-tumorigenic effect of RO-3306 in both ovarian cancer cell lines and a genetically engineered mouse model of high-grade serous ovarian cancer (KpB model). In 147 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer, the overexpression of CDK1 was significantly associated with poor prognosis compared with a low expression group. RO-3306 significantly inhibited cellular proliferation, induced apoptosis, caused cellular stress, and reduced cell migration. The treatment of KpB mice with RO-3306 for four weeks showed a significant decrease in tumor weight under obese and lean conditions without obvious side effects. Overall, our results demonstrate that the inhibition of CDK1 activity by RO-3306 effectively reduces cell proliferation and tumor growth, providing biological evidence for future clinical trials of CDK1 inhibitors in ovarian cancer.

Endogenous single-stranded DNA (essDNA) can form in a mammalian genome as the result of a variety of molecular processes and can both play important roles inside the cell as well as have detrimental consequences to genome integrity, much of which remains to be fully understood. Here, we established the SSiNGLe-P1 approach based on limited digestion by P1 endonuclease for high-throughput genome-wide identification of essDNA regions. We applied this method to profile essDNA in both human mitochondrial and nuclear genomes. In the mitochondrial genome, the profiles of essDNA provide new evidence to support the strand-displacement model of mitochondrial DNA replication. In the nuclear genome, essDNA regions were found to be enriched in certain types of functional genomic elements, particularly, the origins of DNA replication, R-loops, and to a lesser degree, in promoters. Furthermore, interestingly, many of the essDNA regions identified by SSiNGLe-P1 have not been annotated and thus could represent yet unknown functional elements.

The proper replication of mitochondrial DNA is key to the maintenance of this crucial organelle. Multiple studies aimed at understanding the mechanisms of replication of the mitochondrial genome have been conducted in the past several decades; however, while highly informative, they were conducted using relatively low-sensitivity techniques. Here, we established a high-throughput approach based on next-generation sequencing to identify replication start sites with nucleotide-level resolution and applied it to the genome of mitochondria from different human and mouse cell types. We found complex and highly reproducible patterns of mitochondrial initiation sites, both previously annotated and newly discovered in this work, that showed differences among different cell types and species. These results suggest that the patterns of the replication initiation sites are dynamic and might reflect, in some yet unknown ways, the complexities of mitochondrial and cellular physiology. Overall, this work suggests that much remains unknown about the details of mitochondrial DNA replication in different biological states, and the method established here opens up a new avenue in the study of the replication of mitochondrial and potentially other genomes.

High temperature stress (HTS), with growth and development impairment, is one of the most important abiotic stresses frequently encountered by plants, in particular solanacaes such as pepper, that mainly distribute in tropical and subtropical regions. Plants activate thermotolerance to cope with this stress; however, the underlying mechanism is currently not fully understood. SWC4, a shared component of SWR1- and NuA4 complexes implicated in chromatin remodeling, was previously found to be involved in the regulation of pepper thermotolerance, but the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Herein, PMT6, a putative methyltranferase was originally found to interact with SWC4 by co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP)-combined LC/MS assay. This interaction was further confirmed by bimolecular fluorescent complimentary (BiFC) and Co-IP assay, and PMT6 was further found to confer SWC4 methylation. By virus-induced gene silencing, it was found that PMT6 silencing significantly reduced pepper basal thermotolerance and transcription of CaHSP24 and significantly reduced the enrichment of chromatin-activation-related H3K9ac, H4K5ac, and H3K4me3 in TSS of CaHSP24, which was previously found to be positively regulated by CaSWC4. By contrast, the overexpression of PMT6 significantly enhanced basal thermotolerance of pepper plants. All these data indicate that PMT6 acts as a positive regulator in pepper thermotolerance, likely by methylating SWC4.

Kaolinite clay mineral with a layered silicate structure is an abundant resource in China. Due to its advantages of excellent stability, high specific surface area and environmental friendliness, kaolinite is widely used in environment decontamination. By using kaolinite as a carrier, the photocatalytic technology in pure photocatalysts of poor activities, narrow spectral responses, and limited electron transport can be overcome, and the nano-Ag disinfectant’s limitation of the growth and aggregation of nanoparticles is released. Moreover, pure kaolinite used as an adsorbent shows poor surface hydroxyl activity and low cation exchange, leading to the poor adsorption selectivity and easy desorption of heavy metals. Current modification methods including heat treatment, acid modification, metal modification, inorganic salt modification, and organic modification are carried out to obtain better adsorption performance. This review systematically summarizes the application of kaolinite-based nanomaterials in environmental decontamination, such as photocatalytic pollutant degradation and disinfection, nano silver (Ag) disinfection, and heavy metal adsorption. In addition, applications on gas phase pollutant, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), capture and the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are also discussed. This study is the first comprehensive summary of the application of kaolinite in the environmental field. The review also illustrates the efficiency and mechanisms of coupling naturally/modified kaolinite with nanomaterials, and the limitation of the current use of kaolinite.

Pumpkin seed oil (PSO), which is a valuable compound with high nutritional value used for the prevention of various chronic diseases, is prone to oxidation. In this work, small and uniform (su) ovalbumin (OVA) and pectin (PEC) were used to stabilize PSO in the form of an emulsion. The results showed that suOVA-PEC-PSO emulsion with a droplet size of 9.82 ± 0.05 μm was successfully self-assembled from PSO, PEC, and suOVA solution (with a droplet size of 230.13 ± 14.10 nm) treated with 300 W ultrasound, owing to the formation of a more stable interfacial film on the surface of droplets. The interfacial, rheological, emulsifying, and antioxidant properties of the suOVA-PES-PSO emulsions were excellent, owing to the synergistic effects between PEC and suOVA solution. Moreover, the physical stability of the suOVA-PEC-PSO emulsions to salt stress, a freeze-thaw cycle, and heat treatment was also increased and the oxidation of linolenic acid was notably delayed. These results have extended the food-related applications of OVA and PSO, and provide a promising foundation for further exploration of the self-assembly of composite emulsions by small and uniform proteins.

Urban spatial expansion affects almost every dimension of sustainable urban development. A good grasp of the relationship between urban spatial evolution and carbon emissions can be the key to urban spatial governance. As a central city in the central region and a national low-carbon pilot city, Changsha has experienced a rapid expansion of construction land and growing carbon emissions. In this paper, four variable factors and five variable factors of carbon emission were used for the case city Changsha in 1979, 1996, 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2016. Based on the “double carbon” constraint target, the total carbon emissions, carbon-emission intensity and per capita carbon emission constraint indices were forecasted until 2030. They are 87.29 million t-CO2, 0.45 t-CO2/CNY104 and 8.73 t-CO2/person, respectively. The scale of urban land is controlled at 889.61; the constraint indices of residential, commercial service land, industrial land and road square land scales are 231.3 km2, 143.88 km2, 150.17 km2 and 135.83 km2, respectively. The land expansion intensity, urban compactness and shortest travel distance constraint indices are 6.19, 0.236 and 96,086.76 km, respectively. The results of this analysis can provide scientific guidance for the next step in territorial spatial master planning and low-carbon governance.

Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), a member of secretin/glucagon family, is involved in a variety of biological activities such as gut motility, immune responses, and carcinogenesis. In this study, the VIP precursor gene (On-VIP) and its receptor gene VIPR1 (On-VIPR1) were identified from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), and the functions of On-VIP in the immunomodulation of Nile tilapia against bacterial infection were investigated and characterized. On-VIP and On-VIPR1 contain a 450 bp and a 1326 bp open reading frame encoding deduced protein of 149 and 441 amino acids, respectively. Simultaneously, the transcript of both On-VIP and On-VIPR1 were highly expressed in the intestine and sharply induced by Streptococcus agalatiae. Moreover, the positive signals of On-VIP and On-VIPR1 were detected in the longitudinal muscle layer and mucosal epithelium of intestine, respectively. Furthermore, both in vitro and in vivo experiments indicated several immune functions of On-VIP, including reduction of P65, P38, MyD88, STAT3, and AP1, upregulation of CREB and CBP, and suppression of inflammation. Additionally, in vivo experiments proved that On-VIP could protect Nile tilapia from bacterial infection and promote apoptosis and pyroptosis. These data lay a theoretical basis for further understanding of the mechanism of VIP guarding bony fish against bacterial infection.

Physicochemical, texture indexes, microstructure and volatiles were used to characterize the changes in quality, structure and flavor of cooked salted egg yolks (SEYs) with or without ultrasonic treatment. Experimental results indicated that ultrasonic significantly increased cooking (water) loss, oil exudation, lipids oxidation (TBARS), accelerated the doneness of cooked SEYs and then promoted the generation of volatiles. These results were further confirmed by the improvement of thermal stability, the changes in color, secondary structure of proteins, water distribution and mobility. Meanwhile, more “fragments” and “cracks” were observed in scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the decrease in gumminess and chewiness were detected using texture profile analysis (TPA), inducing that the migration of lipids and collapse of gel network were intensified. Moreover, ultrasonic treatment decreased the content of sodium chloride in SEYs. Therefore, it was concluded that the doneness, quality and flavor of cooked SEYs were improved by ultrasonic treatment, which could be used as an effective and alternative method for the production of SEYs with good flavor, sandy and oily texture.

Various reaction mechanisms for the catalytic degradation of formaldehyde (HCHO) remain to be debated. Density functional theory (DFT) was applied to investigate whether the catalytic oxidation of HCHO on pristine Co3O4 (110) surface follows the Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism or the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism. Firstly, HCHO and O2 co-adsorb on the surface and two H atoms from HCHO are peculiarly prone to transfer to O2, forming CO and HOOH. For the MvK mechanism, CO2 is generated through CO grabbing a lattice oxygen. Meanwhile, the O–O bond of HOOH is broken into two OH groups. One OH fills the oxygen vacancy and its H atom moves to another OH group for H2O formation. For the L-H mechanism, CO directly obtains one OH group to generate COOH. Subsequently, the H atom of COOH transfers to another OH group along with CO2 and H2O generation. Both two mechanisms exhibit a similar maximum activation barrier. The lattice oxygen in the MvK mechanism and the surface-absorbed OH group in the L-H mechanism are the key reactive oxygen species. The small difference in energetic span further suggests that the catalytic cycle through the two mechanisms is feasible. This theoretical study provides new insight into the catalytic reaction path of HCHO oxidation on pristine Co3O4 surface.

Estuarine zones are regarded as the ecotones connecting the rivers and lakes. Sediment dredging is a conventional treatment technology that is widely used to remove the internal loading in estuarine zones worldwide. However, what is the characteristic of nutrient release in the gate-controlled estuary and how long this practice is effective are still unclear. Hence, sediment and water samples were collected from dredged and undredged regions around the gate-controlled estuary of northern Taihu Lake for laboratory experiments, in which they were subjected to different temperatures, depths, and disturbance levels. The total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations of the dredged region were lower than those from the undredged region under stable hydrodynamic conditions. A high dynamic release rate (R) of nutrients in the dredged sediments (RTN = 164.75 mg/m2·d and RTP = 5.83 mg/m2·d) existed under dynamic release conditions (stirring speeds: 90 and 120 r/min). The effect of disturbance and temperature on release rate and nutrient form was completely different for the static and dynamic release cases. The nutrient loads from dynamic release were 4–17 times greater than those from static release. For unstable hydrodynamic conditions, the release rate from the bottom sediment exceeded that from the surface sediment in the undredged region. These results indicated that, under stable hydrodynamic conditions, dredging improves long-term water quality. However, dredging alone in unstable hydrodynamic conditions may not remove the potential risk of internal release in the long term. Specific ecological and engineering measures should be combined with dredging practice to restore estuary habitats and minimize the release of internal pollutants.

CabZIP63 and CaWRKY40 were previously found to be shared in the pepper defense response to high temperature stress (HTS) and to Ralstonia solanacearum inoculation (RSI), forming a transcriptional cascade. However, how they activate the two distinct defense responses is not fully understood. Herein, using a revised genetic approach, we functionally characterized CabZIP23 in the CabZIP63–CaWRKY40 cascade and its context specific pepper immunity activation against RSI by interaction with CabZIP63. CabZIP23 was originally found by immunoprecipitation-mass spectrometry to be an interacting protein of CabZIP63-GFP; it was upregulated by RSI and acted positively in pepper immunity against RSI by virus induced gene silencing in pepper plants, and transient overexpression in Nicotiana benthamiana plants. By chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)-qPCR and electrophoresis mobility shift assay (EMSA), CabZIP23 was found to be directly regulated by CaWRKY40, and CabZIP63 was directly regulated by CabZIP23, forming a positive feedback loop. CabZIP23–CabZIP63 interaction was confirmed by co-immunoprecipitation (CoIP) and bimolecular fluorescent complimentary (BiFC) assays, which promoted CabZIP63 binding immunity related target genes, including CaPR1, CaNPR1 and CaWRKY40, thereby enhancing pepper immunity against RSI, but not affecting the expression of thermotolerance related CaHSP24. All these data appear to show that CabZIP23 integrates in the CabZIP63–CaWRKY40 cascade and the context specifically turns it on mounting pepper immunity against RSI.

The high usage for new energy has been promoting the next-generation energy storage systems (ESS). As promising alternatives to lithium ion batteries (LIBs), sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have caused extensive research interest owing to the high natural Na abundance of 2.4 wt.% (vs. 0.0017 wt.% for Li) in the earth's crust and the low cost of it. The development of high-performance electrode materials has been challenging due to the increase in the feasibility of SIBs technology. In the past years, bimetallic sulfides (BMSs) with high theoretical capacity and outstanding redox reversibility have shown great promise as high performance anode materials for SIBs. Herein, the recent advancements of BMSs as anode for SIBs are reported, and the electrochemical mechanism of these electrodes are systematically investigated. In addition, the current issues, challenges, and perspectives are highlighted to address the extensive understanding of the associated electrochemical process, aiming to provide an insightful outlook for possible directions of anode materials for SIBs.

Responsive slippery lubricant-infused surfaces (SLIS) have attracted substantial attention because of the high demand of fundamental research and practical applications, such as controllable liquid-repellency, intelligent, and easy-to-implement wettability switching. In this review, advanced development of responsive slippery surfaces is briefly summarized upon various external stimuli, including stress, electrical field, magnetic field, and temperature. In addition, remaining challenge and prospect are also discussed.

Air pollution has been a recurring problem in northern Chinese cities, and high concentrations of PM2.5 in winter have been a particular cause for concern. Secondary aerosols converted from precursor gases (i.e., nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds) evidently account for a large fraction of the PM2.5. Conventional control methods, such as dust removal, desulfurization, and denitrification, help reduce emissions from stationary combustion sources, but these measures have not led to decreases in haze events. Recent advances in nanomaterials and nanotechnology provide new opportunities for removing fine particles and gaseous pollutants from ambient air and reducing the impacts on human health. This review begins with overviews of air pollution and traditional abatement technologies, and then advances in ambient air purification by nanotechnologies, including filtration, adsorption, photocatalysis, and ambient-temperature catalysis are presented—from fundamental principles to applications. Current state-of-the-art developments in the use of nanomaterials for particle removal, gas adsorption, and catalysis are summarized, and practical applications of catalysis-based techniques for air purification by nanomaterials in indoor, semi-enclosed, and open spaces are highlighted. Finally, we propose future directions for the development of novel disinfectant nanomaterials and the construction of advanced air purification devices.

Tilt vibrations inevitably have negative effects on some precise engineering even after applying horizontal and vertical vibration isolations. It is difficult to adopt a traditional passive vibration isolation (PVI) scheme to realize tilt vibration isolation. In this paper, we present and develop a tilt active vibration isolation (AVI) device using a vertical pendulum (VP) tiltmeter and a piezoelectric transducer (PZT). The potential resolution of the VP is dependent on the mechanical thermal noise in the frequency bandwidth of about 0.0265 nrad, which need not be considered because it is far below the ground tilt of the laboratory. The tilt sensitivity of the device in an open-loop mode, investigated experimentally using a voltage controller, is found to be (1.63±0.11)×105 V/rad. To compensate for the hysteresis nonlinearity of the PZT, we experimentally established the multi-loop mathematical model of hysteresis, and designed a parallel controller consisting of both a hysteresis inverse model predictor and a digital proportional–integral–differential (PID) adjuster. Finally, the response of the device working in close-loop mode to the tilt vibration was tested experimentally, and the tilt AVI device showed a good vibration isolation performance, which can remarkably reduce the tilt vibration, for example, from 6.0131 μrad to below 0.0103 μrad.

Power seats (i.e., electrically adjustable seats that can be designed to move in several ways) have become increasingly common in airplanes, vehicles, and offices. Many studies have investigated the effects of seat attitude parameters, for example, the inclined angles of a backrest, on discomfort during the adjustment process. However, few studies have considered discomfort under different speeds during the adjustment process. In this study, we investigated discomfort with three speeds (i.e., “fast”, “median”, and “slow” corresponding to three durations of 15, 20, and 25 s, respectively) and two adjustments of a power seat, i.e., incline angle adjustment of the backrest and fore-and-aft position adjustment of the seat pan. We also investigated the effects of different physiological parameters on subjects’ discomfort. Twenty-four subjects (12 males and 12 females) completed a questionnaire to indicate their adjustment condition preferences, to rate their overall discomfort during the adjustment processes on a category-ratio scale, and to rate their local body discomfort. The majority of subjects preferred the fast speed adjustment condition and the trend was that a lower backrest adjustment speed increased discomfort during the process. The dominant local discomfort was in the upper and lower back regions during the backrest adjustment, whereas there was no obvious dominant local discomfort during the seat pan adjustment. The physiological parameters also had significant correlations with discomfort in some adjustment movements, for example, the discomfort was negatively correlated with height during the backrest adjustment.

Water hammer wave is widely applied to test hydraulic components in various areas. A new hydraulic high-pressure impulse generator is presented in this paper in order to provide the standard water hammer wave for long-term usage. A combination of a sleeve and a rotary spool was used to build the impulse generator, and a booster piston was applied to amplify the output pressure. Mathematical models were established using commercial software, and a prototype and a test rig were built based on the simulation results. The experimental results for both single wave and repeated periods show the feasibility of the new design and indicate that the new hydraulic high-pressure impulse generator can be used for long-time impulse tests.

casper has been a widely used transparent mutant of zebrafish. It possesses a combined loss of reflective iridophores and light-absorbing melanophores, which gives rise to its almost transparent trunk throughout larval and adult stages. Nevertheless, genomic causal mutations of this transparent phenotype are poorly defined. To identify the potential genetic basis of this fascinating morphological phenotype, we constructed genome maps by performing genome sequencing of 28 zebrafish individuals including wild-type AB strain, roy orbison (roy), and casper mutants. A total of 4.3 million high-quality and high-confidence homozygous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected in the present study. We also identified a 6.0-Mb linkage disequilibrium block specifically in both roy and casper that was composed of 39 functional genes, of which the mpv17 gene was potentially involved in the regulation of iridophore formation and maintenance. This is the first report of high-confidence genomic mutations in the mpv17 gene of roy and casper that potentially leads to defective splicing as one major molecular clue for the iridophore loss. Additionally, comparative transcriptomic analyses of skin tissues from the AB, roy and casper groups revealed detailed transcriptional changes of several core genes that may be involved in melanophore and iridophore degeneration. In summary, our updated genome and transcriptome sequencing of the casper and roy mutants provides novel genetic clues for the iridophore loss. These new genomic variation maps will offer a solid genetic basis for expanding the zebrafish mutant database and in-depth investigation into pigmentation of animals.

Recycling Zn and Fe from jarosite residue to produce high value-added products is of great importance to the healthy and sustainable development of zinc industry. In this work, we reported the preparation of ZnFe2O4/α-Fe2O3 nanocomposites from the leaching liquor of jarosite residue by a facile chemical coprecipitation method followed by heat treatment at 800°C in air. The microstructure of the as-prepared ZnFe2O4/α-Fe2O3 nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS). The results demonstrated that the ZnFe2O4/α-Fe2O3 composites are composed of interconnected ZnFe2O4 and α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals with sizes in the range of 20–40 nm. When evaluated as anode material for Li-ion batteries, the ZnFe2O4/α-Fe2O3 nanocomposites exhibits high lithium storage activity, superior cyclic stability, and good high rate capability. Cyclic voltammetry analysis reveals that surface pseudocapacitive lithium storage has a significant contribution to the total stored charge of the ZnFe2O4/α-Fe2O3, which accounts for the enhanced lithium storage performance during cycling. The synthesis of ZnFe2O4/α-Fe2O3 nanocomposites from the leaching liquor of jarosite residue and its successful application in lithium-ion batteries open up new avenues in the fields of healthy and sustainable development of industries.

The primary objective of this study was to realize the large-scale discovery of conotoxin sequences from different organs (including the venom duct, venom bulb and salivary gland) of the vermivorous Oak cone snail, Conus quercinus. Using high-throughput transcriptome sequencing, we identified 133 putative conotoxins that belong to 34 known superfamilies, of which nine were previously reported while the remaining 124 were novel conotoxins, with 17 in new and unassigned conotoxin groups. A-, O1-, M-, and I2- superfamilies were the most abundant, and the cysteine frameworks XIII and VIII were observed for the first time in the A- and I2-superfamilies. The transcriptome data from the venom duct, venom bulb and salivary gland showed considerable inter-organizational variations. Each organ had many exclusive conotoxins, and only seven of all the inferred mature peptides were common in the three organs. As expected, most of the identified conotoxins were synthesized in the venom duct at relatively high levels; however, a number of conotoxins were also identified in the venom bulb and the salivary gland with very low transcription levels. Therefore, various organs have different conotoxins with high diversity, suggesting greater contributions from several organs to the high-throughput discovery of new conotoxins for future drug development.

In this work, a series of Ce-W-Ti catalysts were synthesized using a solution combustion method for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 at low temperatures. The reaction performance of NH3-SCR of NO was significantly improved over the Ce-W-Ti catalysts compared to Ce0.4Ti and W0.4Ti catalysts, while Ce0.2W0.2Ti showed the best activity among all the samples. The Ce0.2W0.2Ti catalyst exhibited over 90% removal of NO and 100% N2 selectivity in the temperature range of 250⁻400 °C at a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 120,000 mL·g−1·h−1. The Ce-W-Ti catalysts were characterized using N2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry and temperature programmed desorption of NH3 to establish the structure-activity relationships of the Ce-W-Ti catalysts. The excellent catalytic performance of the Ce0.2W0.2Ti catalyst could be associated with the larger specific surface area, highly dispersed Ce and W species, increased amount of surface adsorbed oxygen (Oads) and enhanced total acidity on the catalyst surfaces.

The great proliferation of wind power generation has brought about great challenges to power system operations. To mitigate the ramifications of wind power uncertainty on operational reliability, predictive scheduling of generation and transmission resources is required in the day-ahead and real-time markets. In this regard, this paper presents a risk-averse stochastic unit commitment model that incorporates transmission reserves to flexibly manage uncertainty-induced congestion. In this two-settlement market framework, the key statistical features of line flows are extracted using a high-dimensional probabilistic collocation method in the real-time dispatch, for which the spatial correlation between wind farms is also considered. These features are then used to quantify transmission reserve requirements in the transmission constraints at the day-ahead stage. Comparative studies on the IEEE 57-bus system demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the conventional unit commitment (UC) to enhance the system reliability with wind power integration while leading to more cost-effective operations.

The family of secretory calcium-binding phosphoproteins (SCPPs) have been considered vital to skeletal tissue mineralization. However, most previous SCPP studies focused on phylogenetically distant animals but not on those closely related species. Here we provide novel insights into the coevolution of SCPP genes and fish scales in 10 species from Otophysi. According to their scale phenotypes, these fishes can be divided into three groups, i.e., scaled, sparsely scaled, and scaleless. We identified homologous SCPP genes in the genomes of these species and revealed an absence of some SCPP members in some genomes, suggesting an uneven evolutionary history of SCPP genes in fishes. In addition, most of these SCPP genes, with the exception of SPP1, individually form one or two gene cluster(s) on each corresponding genome. Furthermore, we constructed phylogenetic trees using maximum likelihood method to estimate their evolution. The phylogenetic topology mostly supports two subclasses in some species, such as Cyprinus carpio, Sinocyclocheilus anshuiensis, S. grahamin, and S. rhinocerous, but not in the other examined fishes. By comparing the gene structures of recently reported candidate genes, SCPP1 and SCPP5, for determining scale phenotypes, we found that the hypothesis is suitable for Astyanax mexicanus, but denied by S. anshuiensis, even though they are both sparsely scaled for cave adaptation. Thus, we conclude that, although different fish species display similar scale phenotypes, the underlying genetic changes however might be diverse. In summary, this paper accelerates the recognition of the SCPP family in teleosts for potential scale evolution.

Polyphenol compositions and concentrations in skins and seeds of five muscadine grapes (cv. “Noble”, “Alachua”, “Carlos”, “Fry”, and “Granny Val”) cultivated in the United States (Tallahassee-Florida, TA-FL) and South China (Nanning-Guangxi, NN-GX and Pu’er-Yunnan, PE-YN) were investigated, using ultra performance liquid chromatography tandem triple quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC Triple TOF MS/MS). Fourteen ellagitannins were newly identified in these muscadine grapes. The grapes grown in NN-GX accumulated higher levels of ellagic acid, methyl brevifolin carboxylate, and ellagic acid glucoside in skins, and penta-O-galloyl-glucose in seeds. In PE-YN, more flavonols were detected in skins, and higher contents of flavan-3-ols, ellagic acid, and methyl gallate were identified in seeds. Abundant seed gallic acid and flavonols were found among the grapes grown in TA-FL. Based on principal component analysis (PCA) of 54 evaluation parameters, various cultivars grown in different locations could be grouped together and vice versa for the same cultivar cultivated in different regions. This is the result of the interaction between genotype and environmental conditions, which apparently influences the polyphenol synthesis and accumulation.

One-dimensional (1D) semiconductor nanomaterials are of particular importance owing to their unique properties and potential applications. This review attempts to provide a comprehensive introduction of 1D La(OH)3 nanostructures including nanowires, nanoneedles, nanobelts, and nanorods. Firstly, various strategies developed to fabricate the 1D La(OH)3 nanostructures are discussed, such as precipitation and composite-hydroxide-mediated, hydrothermal, and solvothermal methods, accompanying the description of the corresponding growth mechanisms. Then, the unique properties such as novel physical properties of 1D La(OH)3 nanostructures resulting from their unique electronic structures and numerous transition modes involving the 4f shells of these ions are represented in detail. Also, the wide applications in photocatalyst, capacitors, and photoluminescence based on the unique properties are discussed. Finally, the paper ends with a summary and some perspectives on the challenges and new directions in this emerging area.

Fish venom remains a virtually untapped resource. There are so few fish toxin sequences for reference, which increases the difficulty to study toxins from venomous fish and to develop efficient and fast methods to dig out toxin genes or proteins. Here, we utilized Chinese yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) as our research object, since it is a representative species in Siluriformes with its venom glands embedded in the pectoral and dorsal fins. In this study, we set up an in-house toxin database and a novel toxin-discovering protocol to dig out precise toxin genes by combination of transcriptomic and proteomic sequencing. Finally, we obtained 15 putative toxin proteins distributed in five groups, namely Veficolin, Ink toxin, Adamalysin, Za2G and CRISP toxin. It seems that we have developed a novel bioinformatics method, through which we could identify toxin proteins with high confidence. Meanwhile, these toxins can also be useful for comparative studies in other fish and development of potential drugs.
