The transition from fossil-based to bio-based materials requires in-depth environmental durability analysis for material engineering and construction applications. We report the hydrothermal aging and biodegradation effect on 6 types of compatibilized microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) composites. The prepared highly loaded systems with 70 wt% of MCC showed a strong positive impact on the composites’ mechanical and thermomechanical properties concerning applied modifications. MCC was modified with different coupling agents, namely polyhydroxy amides (PHA), alkyl ester (EST), (3-Aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS), maleic acid anhydride, and polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (PMDI). In addition, cross-linking agent carbodiimide (CDI) was used as an alternative to MCC modification. Modification of MCC compared to unmodified composite induced the enhanced rigidity, creep properties, and thermal stability of the materials due to the cross-linking in the interface by proposed chemical treatment. PMDI and CDI chemical modification resulted in the highest elastic modulus while keeping high strength values. A significant 2.5-fold reduction of the coefficient of linear thermal expansion and decreased thermal strains for modified biocomposites were obtained. Due to the hydrophilic nature of MCC, the hydrothermal aging of the composites revealed a dramatic decrease in the elastic modulus and strength characteristics compared to neat PBS. The hydrophilicity depends on the applied surface modification as indicated by contact angle measurements and water absorption and swelling tests. EST facilitated water wetting and enhanced water penetration, and reduced material biodegradation to 30 days, a 2.5-fold improvement compared to the neat PBS polymer. In contrast, PHA, APTMS, PMDI, and CDI improved biocomposites durability while suppressing biodegradation. The obtained results could be useful for selecting an optimal MCC surface modification route to design novel and perspective biocomposites with tailored durability and biodegradation and to replace polyolefin composites for wood polymer composite applications.

Solar illumination is a promising source of primary energy to reduce global warming and to clean polluted waters, thus fostering research of the design of efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen production by water splitting and for contaminant degradation. In particular, photocatalysis by indium sulfide (In2S3) is drawing attention due to its suitable narrow bandgap of 2.0–2.3 eV for visible light harnessing, yet large-scale application of unmodified In2S3 is limited. Here we review the photocatalyst criteria for water splitting, the synthesis and morphological manipulations of In2S3, the synthesis of heterojunctions by coupling semiconductors to increase performance, and doping In2S3. In2S3-based heterojunctions, i.e., traditional type II, all-solid-state, and direct Z-scheme photocatalytic systems show benefits such as larger charge separation, broad solar spectrum absorption, and amended conduction band and valence band edge potentials for maximum pollutant removal and H2 production. The effect of dopant incorporation on electronic modulations of In2S3 is explained by the density functional theory.

In the current work, we have prepared sodium alginate (SAlg), dextrin, and acrylic acid (AA) based cross-linked hydrogels, composed of bentonite incorporated in the biocompatible hydrogel matrix. This hydrogel composite can remove highly toxic herbicide paraquat (PQ). As-synthesised hydrogel (SAlg/dextrin-cl-PAA) and hydrogel composite (SAlg/dextrin-cl-PAA/bentonite) were further analysed by infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DSC). For the first time, PQ adsorption onto sodium and dextrin-based hydrogel was also evaluated. The measured highest removal capacities were 76.923 and 90.909 mg g−1 for the SAlg/dextrin-cl-PAA and SAlg/dextrin-cl-PAA/bentonite, respectively. Pseudo-second-order (PSO) and Langmuir isotherm models have shown to be best suited for accurately describing the adsorption mechanism. A thermodynamics study verified that the adsorption of PQ on adsorbents is spontaneous, favourable and exothermic. Moreover, reusability analysis shows that the adsorbents possess good reproducibility even after six successive cycles. The adsorption results demonstrate that the synthesised adsorbents are very efficient for removing herbicides (PQ) from wastewater.

Over various scientific fields in biochemistry, amino acids have been highlighted in research works. Protein, peptide- and amino acid-based drug delivery systems have proficiently transformed nanotechnology via immense flexibility in their features for attaching various drug molecules and biodegradable polymers. In this regard, novel nanostructures including carbon nanotubes, electrospun carbon nanofibers, gold nanoislands, and metal-based nanoparticles have been introduced as nanosensors for accurate detection of these organic compounds. These nanostructures can bind the biological receptor to the sensor surface and increase the surface area of the working electrode, significantly enhancing the biosensor performance. Interestingly, protein-based nanocarriers have also emerged as useful drug and gene delivery platforms. This is important since, despite recent advancements, there are still biological barriers and other obstacles limiting gene and drug delivery efficacy. Currently available strategies for gene therapy are not cost-effective, and they do not deliver the genetic cargo effectively to target sites. With rapid advancements in nanotechnology, novel gene delivery systems are introduced as nonviral vectors such as protein, peptide, and amino acid-based nanostructures. These nano-based delivery platforms can be tailored into functional transformation using proteins and peptides ligands based nanocarriers, usually overexpressed in the specified diseases. The purpose of this review is to shed light on traditional and nanotechnology-based methods to detect amino acids, peptides, and proteins. This study presents a new, revolutionary, and easy method of separating Gd (III). For this purpose, a cellulose acetate membrane surface was modified in three steps, as follows: firstly, with aminopropyl triethoxysylene, then with glutaraldehyde, and at the end, by immobilization of crown ethers. The obtained membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), through which the synthesis of membranes with Gd (III) separation properties is demonstrated. In addition, for the Gd (III) separating process, a gadolinium nitrate solution, with applications of moderator poison in nuclear reactors, was used. The membranes retention performance has been demonstrated by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), showing a separation efficiency of up to 91%, compared with the initial feed solution.

Currently, macroporous hydrogels have been receiving attention in wastewater treatment due to their unique structures. As a natural polymer, alginate is used to remove cationic dyes due to its sustainable features such as abundance, low cost, processability, and being environmentally friendly. Herein, alginate/montmorillonite composite macroporous hydrogels (cryogels) with high porosity, mechanical elasticity, and high adsorption yield for methylene blue (MB) were generated by the one-step cryogelation technique. These cryogels were synthesized by adding montmorillonite into gel precursor, followed by chemical cross-linking employing carbodiimide chemistry in a frozen state. The as-prepared adsorbents were analyzed by FT-IR, SEM, gel fraction, swelling, uniaxial compression, and MB adsorption tests. The results indicated that alginate/montmorillonite cryogels exhibited high gelation yield (up to 80%), colossal water uptake capacity, elasticity, and effective dye adsorption capacity (93.7%). Maximum adsorption capacity against MB was 559.94 mg g−1 by linear regression of Langmuir model onto experimental data. The Pseudo-Second-Order model was fitted better onto kinetic data compared to the Pseudo-First-Order model. Improved porosity and mechanical elasticity yielding enhanced dye removal capacity make them highly potential alternative adsorbents compared to available alginate/montmorillonite materials for MB removal.

Metallic substrates and polymer adhesive in composite-metal joints have a relatively large coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch, which is a barrier in the growing market of electric vehicles and their battery structures. It is reported that adding carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to the adhesive reduces the CTE of the CNT-enhanced polymer adhesive multi-material system, and therefore when used in adhesively bonded joints it would, theoretically, result in low CTE mismatch in the joint system. The current article presents the influence of two specific mass ratios of CNTs on the CTE of the enhanced polymer. It was observed that the addition of 1.0 wt% and 2.68 wt% of multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) decreased the CTE of the polymer adhesive from 7.5&times, 10&minus, 5 &deg, C&minus, 1 (pristine level) to 5.87&times, 1 and 4.43&times, 1, respectively, by 22% and 41% reductions.

Vegetable fiber- bolstered polymer composites are locating their role extensively in structural engineering ranging from civil structures to automobile fabricating because of the properties, like easy availability, low density, biocompatibility, bio decomposability and ease to handle. Over past few decades these products had been evaluated for their mechanical and chemical resistance strength and were contrasted with those of artificial fibers bolstered composite materials. In addition to above properties, evaluation of thermal characteristics of vegetable fibers and their composites have been also a topic of count because they decide the overall performance of the resulted products. Impact of temperature on adhesion of fiber with matrix, on matrix curing, on matrix cross linking and fire damage during fabrication have been also a part of thermal study. No doubt, there are numerous works have been mentioned in literature on thermal stability of natural fibers and these fibers reinforced thermoplastic/thermosetting matrix based composites. However, in present chapter we will very well take a look at thermal behaviour of different raw vegetable fibers, phenolic matrix and vegetable fibers reinforced phenolic matrix composites. In addition, impacts of fiber’s surface functionalization on thermal behaviour of fibers and fibers reinforced phenolic composites will be also a part of our study in this chapter.

Recently, biocomposites have emerged as materials of great interest to the scientists and industry around the globe. Among various polymers, polylactic acid (PLA) is a popular matrix material with high potential for advanced applications. Various particulate materials and nanoparticles have been used as the filler in PLA based matrix. One of the extensively studied filler is cellulose. However, cellulose fibres, due to their hydrophilic nature, are difficult to blend with a hydrophobic polymer matrix. This leads to agglomeration and creates voids, reducing the mechanical strength of the resulting composite. Moreover, the role of the various forms of pure cellulose and its particle shape factors has not been analyzed in most of the current literature. Therefore, in this work, materials of various shapes and shape factors were selected as fillers for the production of polymer composites using Polylactic acid as a matrix to fill this knowledge gap. In particular, pure cellulose fibres (three types with different elongation coefficient) and two mineral nanocomponents: precipitated calcium carbonate and montmorillonite were used. The composites were prepared by a melt blending process using two different levels of fillers: 5% and 30%. Then, the analysis of their thermomechanical and physico-chemical properties was carried out. The obtained results were presented graphically and discussed in terms of their shape and degree of filling.

Background Integrated management of hemicellulosic fraction and its economical transformation to value-added products is the key driver towards sustainable lignocellulosic biorefineries. In this aspect, microbial cell factories are harnessed for the sustainable production of commercially viable biochemicals by valorising C5 and C6 sugars generated from agro-industrial waste. However, in the terrestrial ecosystem, microbial systems can efficiently consume glucose. On the contrary, pentose sugars are less preferred carbon source as most of the microbes lack metabolic pathway for their utilization. The effective utilization of both pentose and hexose sugars is key for economical biorefinery. Results Bioprospecting the food waste and selective enrichment on xylose-rich medium led to screening and isolation of yeast which was phylogenetically identified as Pichia fermentans. The newly isolated xylose assimilating yeast was explored for xylitol production. The wild type strain robustly grew on xylose and produced xylitol with > 40% conversion yield. Chemical mutagenesis of isolated yeast with ethyl methanesulphonate (EMS) yielded seven mutants. The mutant obtained after 15 min EMS exposure, exhibited best xylose bioconversion efficiency. This mutant under shake flask conditions produced maximum xylitol titer and yield of 34.0 g/L and 0.68 g/g, respectively. However, under the same conditions, the control wild type strain accumulated 27.0 g/L xylitol with a conversion yield of 0.45 g/g. Improved performance of the mutant was attributed to 34.6% activity enhancement in xylose reductase with simultaneous reduction of xylitol dehydrogenase activity by 22.9%. Later, the culture medium was optimized using statistical design and validated at shake flask and bioreactor level. Bioreactor studies affirmed the competence of the mutant for xylitol accumulation. The xylitol titer and yield obtained with pure xylose were 98.9 g/L and 0.67 g/g, respectively. In comparison, xylitol produced using non-detoxified xylose rich pre-hydrolysate from sugarcane bagasse was 79.0 g/L with an overall yield of 0.54 g/g. Conclusion This study demonstrates the potential of newly isolated P. fermentans in successfully valorising the hemicellulosic fraction for the sustainable xylitol production.

Background Xylose is the most prevalent sugar available in hemicellulose fraction of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) and of great interest for the green economy. Unfortunately, most of the cell factories cannot inherently metabolize xylose as sole carbon source. Yarrowia lipolytica is a non-conventional yeast that produces industrially important metabolites. The yeast is able to metabolize a large variety of substrates including both hydrophilic and hydrophobic carbon sources. However, Y. lipolytica lacks effective metabolic pathway for xylose uptake and only scarce information is available on utilization of xylose. For the economica feasibility of LCB-based biorefineries, effective utilization of both pentose and hexose sugars is obligatory. Results In the present study, succinic acid (SA) production from xylose by Y. lipolytica was examined. To this end, Y. lipolytica PSA02004 strain was engineered by overexpressing pentose pathway cassette comprising xylose reductase (XR), xylitol dehydrogenase (XDH) and xylulose kinase (XK) gene. The recombinant strain exhibited a robust growth on xylose as sole carbon source and produced substantial amount of SA. The inhibition of cell growth and SA formation was observed above 60 g/L xylose concentration. The batch cultivation of the recombinant strain in a bioreactor resulted in a maximum biomass concentration of 7.3 g/L and SA titer of 11.2 g/L with the yield of 0.19 g/g. Similar results in terms of cell growth and SA production were obtained with xylose-rich hydrolysate derived from sugarcane bagasse. The fed-batch fermentation yielded biomass concentration of 11.8 g/L (OD600: 56.1) and SA titer of 22.3 g/L with a gradual decrease in pH below 4.0. Acetic acid was obtained as a main by-product in all the fermentations. Conclusion The recombinant strain displayed potential for bioconversion of xylose to SA. Further, this study provided a new insight on conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into value-added products. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on SA production by Y. lipolytica using xylose as a sole carbon source.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) embedded polymers are of increasing interest to scientific and industrial communities for multi‑functional applications. in this article, cnts have been introduced to high‑ strength epoxy adhesive for enabling in‑situ strain sensing in adhesively bonded aluminium‑to‑ aluminium single‑lap joints to accurately indicate the onset and propagation of adhesion failure to the evolution of piezo-resistivity in varying mechanical loads. The CNT modified adhesive in bonded joints and the CNT modified adhesive alone have been tested under monothonic and cyclic tensile loads up to ultimate failure. the changes in the piezo‑resistivity induced by the cnts have been monitored in situ with respect to loading. A novel interpretation method has been developed for progressive, instantaneous adhesion failure estimation under cyclic tensile stresses from a resistivity baseline. the method indicates that the in‑situ resistivity changes and the rate of the changes with strain, i.e. sensitivity, strongly correlate with the adhesion failure progression, irrespective of the cnt dispersion quality. Moreover, the effect of bond thickness on the evolution of piezo-resistivity and adhesion failure have been studied. It was observed that relatively thin adhesive bonds (0.18 mm thickness), possessing higher CNT contact points than thick bonds (0.43 mm thickness), provide 100 times higher sensitivity to varying cyclic loads.

Many bacteria have the potential to use specific pesticides as a source of carbon, phosphorous, nitrogen and sulphur. Acephate degradation by microbes is considered to be a safe and effective method. The overall aim of the present study was to identify acephate biodegrading microorganisms and to investigate the degradation rates of acephate under the stress of humic acid and most common metal ions Fe(III) and copper Cu(II). Pseudomonas azotoformanss strain ACP1, Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain ACP2, and Pseudomonas putida ACP3 were isolated from acephate contaminated soils. Acephate of concentration 100 ppm was incubated with separate strain inoculums and periodic samples were drawn for UV&mdash, visible, FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy) and MS (Mass Spectrometry) analysis. Methamidophos, S-methyl O-hydrogen phosphorothioamidate, phosphenothioic S-acid, and phosphenamide were the major metabolites formed during the degradation of acephate. The rate of degradation was applied using pseudo-first-order kinetics to calculate the half-life (t1/2) values, which were 14.33&ndash, 16.72 d&minus, 1 (strain(s) + acephate), 18.81&ndash, 21.50 d&minus, 1 (strain(s) + acephate + Cu(II)), 20.06 &ndash, 23.15 d&minus, 1 (strain(s) + acephate + Fe(II)), and 15.05&ndash, 17.70 d&minus, 1 (strains + acephate + HA). The biodegradation efficiency of the three bacterial strains can be ordered as P. aeruginosa &gt, P. putida &gt, P. azotoformans. The present study illustrated the decomposition mechanism of acephate under different conditions, and the same may be applied to the removal of other xenobiotic compounds.

Glucose detection by sensing materials has acquired attention recently due to the growing requirement for susceptible and specific glucose sensors in pharmaceutical, clinical and industrial areas. Graphene and its derivative-based polymer nanocomposites can be used extensively as a specific class of effective electrode substances in electrochemical sensing due to its large surface area and interesting physical and electrochemical characteristics. This study covers the various production techniques for polymer-based graphene derivative nanocomposites in electrochemical glucose detection.

In this paper, we report a novel three-layer polymer reactor capable of simple/tandem self-controlled catalysis. The top and bottom layers were composed of two different molecularly imprinted polymers respectively containing two catalytic sites (an acidic site catalyzing hydrolysis and metal nanoparticles catalyzing reduction), performing two selective tandem reactions without interference between each other. The middle layer was composed of a copolymer of poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) and polyacrylamide (PAm) in different ratios, acting as a temperature-responsive switch for the tandem catalysis process. In an aqueous environment, when the temperature is lower than the Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) of the copolymer, the reactor exhibited an open middle access (hydrophilic condition) of intermediate, allowing the tandem processes from hydrolysis to reduction. When the temperature is higher than the LCST, the channels of the middle layer were closed (hydrophobic condition), which obstructed the access of reactants. As a result, the reactor could only conduct simple hydrolysis processes. Therefore, with the three-layer structure, the polymer reactor has led to a self-controlled catalysis. This new multi-layer polymeric reaction concept can expand the practical use of functional catalysts by permitting the control of processes in large temperature ranges.

The present study highlights the beneficial effects of premixing of highly loaded poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) / nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) nanocomposites under solution conditions and its use as a masterbatch for melt blending. The proposed masterbatch process strategy is a very promising manufacturing technique for nanocomposites. Herein, we show the preparation of masterbatch with NFC with a very high loading of 50 wt.%. Research is aimed towards understanding the solution and melt processing effects on the structure and exploitation properties. The composites with NFC loadings from 5 up to 15 wt.% have been prepared by diluting the masterbatch and compared to conventional solvent casting. The masterbatch process significantly reduced overall solvent usage and improved the NFC dispersion within the polymer matrix. The samples prepared by solution casting showed excellent mechanical performance with an increase in elastic modulus up to 1.6-fold and storage modulus up to 2-fold at room temperature (20 °C) compared to the neat PBS, while masterbatch processed samples showed even higher overall mechanical properties – 1.8-fold and 2.5-fold increase in elastic modulus and storage modulus, correspondingly. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging indicated a homogeneous NFC dispersion for masterbatch samples and revealed agglomeration of NFC for the solvent cast ones. Biodegradation studies in the composting conditions were performed to underpin the weight, visual changes, calorimetric properties, while chemical changes were studied using spectroscopy. The NFC significantly accelerated the nanocomposites' biodegradation process from 80 days for the neat PBS to 60 days for the nanocomposites. The calorimetric studies indicate that NFC promoted crystalline phase formation and reduced crystallinity, but thermal stability was not significantly affected. In addition, the reinforcement factor analysis shows that the suitable masterbatch NFC nanocomposite preparation method's choice has a high potential to obtain high-performance materials for PBS films and packaging applications.

Cellulose and cellulose derivatives represent one of the most abundant, in terms of quantity class of sustainable polymers that nature provides. The use of these polymers in a wide range of applications is well known for being used as such or by processing composite or functionalized materials. When it comes to functionalized cellulose, a small problem arises due to the limitation given by the limited reactivity of the hydroxyl groups present on the polymer chain. The present review aims to show a versatile method of functionalizing cellulose with aminopropyltriethoxysilane, the remaining amino group having a much higher reactivity and being much more versatile. Examples of the use of aminopropyltriethoxysilane as a linker for subsequent binding will be presented, as well as its direct applicability in various reactive separation processes.

Nanomaterials based on zirconium tungstate (ZrW2O8) exhibit numerous outstanding properties that make them ideal candidates for the development of high-performance composites. Low coefficient of thermal expansion for advanced materials is a promising direction in the field of insulating nanocomposites. However, the agglomeration of zirconium tungstate (ZrW2O8)-based nanomaterials in the polymer matrix is a limiting factor in their successful applications, and studies on surface functionalization ZrW2O8 for advanced nanocomposites are very limited. In this work, ZrW2O8 nano-rods were synthesized using a hydrothermal method and subsequently functionalized in a solvent-free aqueous medium using dopamine. Both pristine and functionalized nano-rods were thoroughly characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy techniques, which confirmed the successful functionalization of the nanomaterials. Polymer nanocomposites were also prepared using epoxy resin as a model matrix. Polymer nanocomposites with functionalized ZrW2O8 nano-rods exhibited low coefficient of thermal expansion and enhanced tensile properties. We report the manufacturing and characterization of poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) and micro cellulose (MCC) woody-like composites. These composites can be applied as a sustainable woody-like composite alternative to conventional fossil polymer-based wood-plastic composites (WPC). The PBS/MCC composites were prepared by using a melt blending of 70 wt% of MCC processed from bleached softwood. MCC was modified to enhance dispersion and compatibility by way of carbodiimide (CDI), polyhydroxy amides (PHA), alkyl ester (EST), (3-Aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane (APTMS), maleic acid anhydride (MAH), and polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (PMDI). The addition of filler into PBS led to a 4.5-fold improvement of Young&rsquo, s modulus E for the MCC composite, in comparison to neat PBS. The 1.6-fold increase of E was obtained for CDI modified composition in comparison to the unmodified MCC composite. At room temperature, the storage modulus E&prime, was found to improve by almost 4-fold for the APTMS composite. The EST composite showed a pronounced enhancement in viscoelasticity properties due to the introduction of flexible long alkyl chains in comparison to other compositions. The glass transition temperature was directly affected by the composition and its value was &minus, 15 &deg, C for PBS, &minus, 30 &deg, C for EST, and &minus, 10 &deg, C for MAH composites. FTIR indicated the generation of strong bonding between the polymer and cellulose components in the composite. Scanning electron microscopy analysis evidenced the agglomeration of the MCC in the PBS/MCC composites. PMDI, APTMS, and CDI composites were characterized by the uniform dispersion of MCC particles and a decrease of polymer crystallinity. MCC chemical modification induced the enhancement of the thermal stability of MCC composites.

Pectin is one of the finest natural polymer which has drawn great attention because of its applications in different fields. Due to the quintessential structure of pectin, it can be transformed into variety of useful products. It can be utilized as a blend in many polymers to make a mixture or a composite material. Owing to considerable collection in chemical conformation and cross-linking mechanism, different pectin based hydrogels have been prepared for different characteristics in pharmaceutical and bio-medical sites. Inventive properties of hydrogels like volubility, swellability, solvability and hydrophilicity make them better alternative for wastewater treatment. Recently, pectin based hydrogels have demonstrated excellent performance to eliminate various metal ions and dyes from the polluted water. The adsorption characteristics of pectin based hydrogels can be upgraded by using nanoparticles, which prompts to the development of hydrogel nano-composites. In this review article, we have summarized a comprehensive assessment in the direction of using pectin based hydrogels to remove toxic pollutants from aqueous solution. Sodium acrylate-co-N-isopropylacrylamide based pectin hydrogel has demonstrated the maximum adsorption capacities of 265.49, 137.43, 54.86, 53.86, 51.72 and 50.01 mg g−1 for the adsorption of methyl violet, methylene blue, Pb(II), Cu(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) respectively. We have also discussed the pectin structure, properties and applications in this article.

Cancer, a fatal disease, is also one of the main causes of death worldwide. Despite various developments to prevent and treat cancer, the side effects of anticancer drugs remain a major concern. Ascorbic acid is an essential vitamin required by our bodies for normal physiological function and also has antioxidant and anticancer activity. Although the body cannot synthesize ascorbic acid, it is abundant in nature through foods and other natural sources and also exists as a nutritional food supplement. In anticancer drug development, ascorbic acid has played an important role by inhibiting the development of cancer through various mechanisms, including scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), selectively producing ROS and encouraging their cytotoxicity against tumour cells, preventing glucose metabolism, serving as an epigenetic regulator, and regulating the expression of HIF in tumour cells. Several ascorbic acid analogues have been produced to date for their anticancer and antioxidant activity. The current review summarizes the mechanisms behind ascorbic acid’s antitumor activity, presents a compilation of its derivatives and their biological activity as anticancer agents, and discusses delivery systems such as liposomes, nanoparticles against cancer, and patents on ascorbic acid as anticancer agents.

Despite the adverse effects of microbial hazards on public health, major pharmaceutical firms have left the field of anti-infective development and a dramatic reduction in the number of researcher's intricated in the quest for new specific anti-infective leads. In the non-existence of an efficient forum for antibiotics development and over usage in human beings and animals, bacteria have demoralized this potential by gradually establishing the resistance toward most of the antibiotics used. Thus, the production of novel and successful anti-infective drugs is urgently required to combat this resistance. Hydrazones and hydrazides have mounted as a key-skeleton for the development of active drugs, due to their important biological and pharmacological profiles. Hydrazones are being manufactured as medicines by various investigators to fight against the ailments with maximal effects and minimal toxicity. This paper focuses on the outline of the literature results of recent years, incorporating the work on the anti-infective profile of hydrazone analogues. This review may also act as an excellent basis for the development of new derivatives of hydrazone as potential anti-infective mediators.

In this work, P-doped g-C3N4 (PCN) was coupled with another conducting material, fullerene (C60). P doping led to an expansion in solar-light-responsive range, prolongation in charge carrier lifetime, facilitation in charge separation, and transportation, while on the other hand, C60 captured electrons from PCN and reduced the recombination of charge carrier. C60/PCN nanocomposites (with different C60 ratios) were successfully synthesized via a simple ultrasonic method for imidacloprid (IMI) pesticide degradation. Raman and N2-adsorption-desorption measurement techniques were implemented to scrutinize structural properties and the successful formation of the nanocomposite. The photocatalytic degradation of IMI signified a loading of 0.04 wt.% amount of C60 as its optimal concentration. Through Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) isotherm, two times larger specific surface area was observed in 0.04 wt.% C60/PCN than PCN. 60 mg/mL and 1 × 10−4 M were witnessed as an optimal catalyst dose and pesticide concentration at pH 4. Addition of H2O2 enhanced photodegradation processes since it also served as a good electron acceptor, which boosted charge carrier separation. Photodegradation results confirmed that 0.04 wt.% C60/PCN/H2O2 and 0.04 wt.% C60/PCN nanocomposites exhibited 95 % and 91 % removal efficiency, respectively, which were higher than the percentages exhibited by other tested photocatalysts. A promising mechanism of C60/PCN nanocomposite against IMI degradation was also proposed, validating the role of h+, O2− and OH radicals in the photocatalytic process.

Sustainable functional polymer nanocomposites from renewable resources are extremely promising materials that can provide the next-generation of lightweight, multifunctional materials for several applications including energy storage, automotive, construction, defense, aerospace, consumer products, biomedical and functional coatings to name few. There is limited information on the use of sustainable polymers and graphene nanoplatelets (GNs), as well as the combinations of these two can provide reduced water permeability or enhanced electrical conductivity and improved thermal properties, and so on. Building upon this hypothesis, biobased poly(butylene succinate)/few-layer GN nanocomposites were prepared via a solventless melt-blending technique. Different characterization techniques such as differential scanning calorimetery, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, dielectric spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and hot stage optical microscopy were used to study the thermal and structural characteristics. The melt blending was characterized by torque and temperature curves which showed that torque was reduced by up to 15 Nm, and melt temperature was improved by up to 5 °C. The improved crystallization of the composites in low concentrations of GN was observed. Graphene has been found to increase the crystallization temperature up to 10 °C and yielded pronounced spherulite structure, whereas peak shift was observed in XRD. High filler loading from 0.5 to 6.0 wt% was used to obtain more insights for few-layer graphene applications for thermoplastic polymer processing applications.

Long term sustainability requires the elimination of waste products and their integration in the circular economy according to goals set by the European Union. Such is the case with Tetra pak one of the most extensively used food packaging materials in the world. More than half of the Tetra pak packaging ends up in the landfills due to the complicated disposal that requires special processing plants. The objective of this study is to investigate recycled cellulose (rCell) that has been separated from polypropylene and aluminum in the industrial processing plant as a structural filler for functional biocomposites. Cellulose-based waste products are widely used as filler materials for the composites classified as wood-plastic composites (WPC) and are one of the leading materials for sustainable building materials, furniture and packaging industry. We have selected one of the most promising bio-based and biodegradable polymers poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) that has comparable mechanical properties to polyethylene and polypropylene as a matrix for the composites. Thus, we propose a novel application route for rCell obtained during Tetra pak recycling process and evaluate its performance. High filler loading from 10 to 50 wt% has been used in the melt blending process to prepare 5 compositions that contain 55–75% bio-based carbon content. Life cycle inventory has been combined with excessive thermal and mechanical analysis to access the suitability of the composite for various application including submerging in water. The addition of 50 wt % of rCell into PBS leads to improvement of the hardness of the composites. Further, the rCell composites were found to have much higher Young’s modulus compared to pristine PBS. The dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the storage modulus and the loss modulus were significantly enhanced in measured temperature range between −70 and 70 °C. The PBS/rCell composites were biodegradable in soil under composting conditions. Scanning electron microscopy analysis of fractured composites’ surfaces testifies the filler agglomeration process in the PBS/rCell composites and generation of voids, but the FTIR measurements indicate the generation of hydrogen bonding between the polymer and cellulose components. TGA evidence the increase in thermal stability of the rCell after incorporation in the PBS/rCell composites.

Sustainable materials have slowly overtaken the nanofiber research field while the tailoring of their properties and the upscaling for industrial production are some of the major challenges. We report preparation of nanofibers that are bio-based and biodegradable prepared from poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) with the incorporation of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and graphene nanoplatelets (GN). NFC and GN were combined as hybrid filler, which led to the improved morphological structure for electrospun nanofibers. A needleless approach was used for solution electrospinning fabrication of nanofiber mesh structures to promote application scalability. The polymer crystallization process was examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the thermal stability was evaluated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), while the extensive investigation of the nanofibers structure was carried out with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). NFC and GN loadings were 0.5 and 1.0 wt %; while poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) was employed as a compatibilizer to enhance fillers’ interaction within the polymer matrix. The interactions in the interface of the fillers and matrix components were studied by FTIR and Raman spectroscopies. The hybrid filler approach proved to be most suitable for consistent and high-quality nanofiber production. The obtained dense mesh-based structures could have foreseeable potential application in biomedical field like scaffolds for the tissue and bone recovery, while other applications could focus on filtration technologies and smart sensors.

One of the most important polymers for membranes manufacturing is Polysulfone because of its remarkable properties, like chemical stability, mechanical and thermal properties, and also due to the possibility to obtain a wide range of polymeric membranes for different applications. Membrane functionalization is a key process to obtain high-value membrane materials. The present review paper is a guide related to the latest researches performed in the field of functionalization reactions of polysulfone membranes. It is based on both approaches – reactions performed at the surface of the membranes and also on applications. In this article, ion exchange membranes, biomedical or catalyst applications are presented and commented. Furthermore, key factors or analysis related to the main properties of functionalized membranes are also considered.

In this work, a new method is proposed to meet the challenge of preparing new catalysts with cascade/non-cascade switching catalytic property. Inspired from “soft” characteristics and divisional isolation function in natural biological systems, this objective was accomplished by developing a new class of hydrogels made of two unique functional layers with different temperature responses where each may self-govern coupled processes at a specific temperature. This hydrogel polymer reactor exhibited almost no catalytic activity at low-temperature range (50 °C), the hydrogel catalytic polymer reactor further exhibited significant efficiency towards the hydrolysis reaction of NPA as well as the reduction of the intermediate product p-nitrophenol (NP). This mainly resulted from the opening of both the weak polymer complexes and the stronger polymer complexes hydrogel layers, allowing entrance to both the acidic catalytic active center and the metal nanoparticles active center. As a result, the novel hydrogel polymer reactor could be used to control cascade/non-cascade catalysis reactions. Innovative solutions using biopolymer-based materials made of several constituents seems to be particularly attractive for packaging in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. In this direction, some progress has been made in extending use of the electrospinning process towards fiber formation based on biopolymers and organic compounds for the preparation of novel packaging materials. Electrospinning can be used to create nanofiber mats characterized by high purity of the material, which can be used to create active and modern biomedical and pharmaceutical packaging. Intelligent medical and biomedical packaging with the use of polymers is a broadly and rapidly growing field of interest for industries and academia. Among various polymers, alginate has found many applications in the food sector, biomedicine, and packaging. For example, in drug delivery systems, a mesh made of nanofibres produced by the electrospinning method is highly desired. Electrospinning for biomedicine is based on the use of biopolymers and natural substances, along with the combination of drugs (such as naproxen, sulfikoxazol) and essential oils with antibacterial properties (such as tocopherol, eugenol). This is a striking method due to the ability of producing nanoscale materials and structures of exceptional quality, allowing the substances to be encapsulated and the drugs/ biologically active substances placed on polymer nanofibers. So, in this article we briefly summarize the recent advances on electrospinning of biopolymers with particular emphasis on usage of Alginate for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.

India is one of the biggest marble producing country in the world (∼10%). State of Rajasthan has nearly 85% of marble production capacity. Recently, the massive quantity of marble waste fine particulates generated in marble industry has become a major environmental hazard issue. Major minerals present in marble waste are calcite (CaCO3) and dolomite (CaMg (CO3)2). The particle sizes of marble waste particulates has been found to be 200 μm (D90). The chemical composition of marble wastes reveals oxides of calcium (CaO), silica (SiO2), alumina (Al2O3) and alkaline oxides (Na2O, K2O). Apart from that, iron oxide, mica, fluorine, chlorite and organic matter have also been noticed. Marble waste has been explored for possible utilization in industries, thereby it helps in preventing the environmental problems such as dumping and pollution. This article addresses the efficiency of marble wastes for materials development, leading to create some sustainable green composite materials for construction applications.

Biological nanocomposites are a valuable addition to the existing nanocomposite materials and eventually can substitute petroleum-based composite materials in numerous applications due to their inherent advantages such as biodegradability, eco-friendliness, low cost, and easy availability to name a few. Recently, polymer–clay nanocomposites have achieved much more attention due to their enhanced properties such as size dispersion and significant enhancement in physicochemical and mechanical properties in comparison to the pure polymer systems. Among various biopolymers, starch is one of the most abundant natural polymers on the earth and is highly valuable due to its chemical and physical properties. Starch polymer has highly increased potential as an alternative to petroleum-based materials. However, starch cannot be used alone and starch–clay nanocomposite has emerged as a new potential green sustainable material. This article focuses on recent progress in starch-based nanocomposites with particular emphasis on starch–clay nanocomposite preparation, properties, and applications.

Ever since the discovery of graphene, its potential has been predicted for a number of applications in various fields such as electronics, sensors, environmental decontamination techniques, separations and biomedicine to name a few. Among various such fields, the research in graphene-based nanocomposites membranes is still in its infancy as there is not a significant research published in this field so far. However, interestingly this field is registering an exponentially upward trend recently. This review article provides a brief description of polymer nanocomposite membranes with graphene as one of the most indispensable components in the membranes. In this article, we describe in a systematic and comprehensive manner the most recent research published so far in the nanocomposite membranes with graphene and the most commonly used polymers namely the polysulfone and the cellulose derivatives. This article also describes the main applications of these polymeric membranes in the fuel cells and in water purification processes containing the current literature data as well as the authors' own research. A continuous demanding in raw chemicals cost reduction and processing simplification facilitates the exploration and development of new materials in current plastics industries. In this study, a novel carbonaceous filler material “asphaltene” extracted from inexpensive and abundant asphalt is blended into a thermoplastic elastomer poly(styrene–butadiene–styrene) copolymer (SBS) for the fabrication of hybrid composites at different loadings via melt-compounding. Due to its intrinsic molecular rigidness and desirable compatibility with SBS, the prepared asphaltene/SBS composites displays excellent thermo-mechanical properties by improving the storage modulus in the glassy region by 19 % and in the rubbery region by 305 %, as well as increasing the thermal stability by up to 20 °C. The overall mechanical properties are also enhanced substantially by incorporation of asphaltene into the SBS matrix according to the filler loading in SBS: the tensile strength increased by 2.2 MPa, the maximum elongation by 268 %, Young’s modulus by 214 %, and toughness by 100.4 %. Although the introduced asphaltene inevitably led to a gradual increment in the viscosity of polymer melts from the filler–filler and filler–polymer interactions, homogeneous dispersion of the reinforcing fillers at optimum loading (20–30 wt%) in SBS matrix is still sustained.

The disposal of large amounts of waste from daily use polymers is among one of the foremost concerns in the current era. Effective utilization of bio-renewable materials procured from natural sources has been proposed as a potential solution to this problem. Among such different polymers, Poly lactic acid (PLA) which is a bio-degradable polymer, resembles quite promotable features, which can be polymerized from sustainable sources as chips sugarcane, starch and corn. Ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of Lactide (LA) monomer considering catalysts such as Al, Sn or Zn is one of the efficient methods for the PLA synthesis. However, the PLA polymerized through this type of catalysts may contain trace elements of the catalyst. Due to their carcinogenic nature, the traces of such catalysts should be (ideally) removed from the synthesis process. The use of alternative energy (AE- UV, Microwave) sources could be a potential route. Alternative development of non-metal catalysts is best alternatives for the processing of PLA through ROP. PLA layer based composite materials are gaining huge interest due to their multiple application (food, medical etc.) as eco-friendly material. In this article, we review on the implementation of AE sources for PLA processing and to populate the current state-of-the-art associated with the PLA research, especially application in nanocomposite materials field.

Hydroxyapatite is a calcium phosphate intensively proposed as a bone substitution material because of its resemblance to the constituents of minerals present in natural bone. Since hydroxyapatite’s properties are mainly adequate for nonload bearing applications, different solutions are being tested for improving these properties and upgrading them near the target values of natural bone. On the other hand, starch (a natural and biodegradable polymer) and its blends with other polymers have been proposed as constituents in hydroxyapatite mixtures due to the adhesive, gelling, and swelling abilities of starch particles, useful in preparing well dispersed suspensions and consolidated ceramic bodies. This article presents the perspectives of incorporating starch and starch blends in hydroxyapatite materials. Based on the role of starch within the materials, the review covers its use as (i) a polymeric matrix in hydroxyapatite composites used as adhesives, bone cements, bone waxes, drug delivery devices or scaffolds and (ii) a sacrificial binder for fabrication of porous hydroxyapatite scaffolds. The suitability of these materials for bone reconstruction has becomes a reachable aim considering the recent advancements in ceramic fabrication and the current possibilities of controlling the processing parameters.

Lignin is one of the most abundant natural polymers after cellulose and has attracted great attention in academia as well as in industry for miscellaneous applications. Lignin also exhibits very high potential as a renewable sustainable resource for a galaxy of high value biochemicals. Due to the typical structure of lignin, it can be converted into different types of useful products. From a ligno-cellulose bio-refinery prospective point of view, it can be regarded as an economic bio product and can also be used as filler in several polymers to form blends or composites. Recently lignin-based hydrogels have shown excellent performance for removal of various pollutants from water. The adsorption properties of lignin based hydrogels can further be improved by using a combination of nanomaterials and lignin that results in promising hydrogel nanocomposites. In nature, the most abundant structures are formed by the combination of lignin, cellulose and hemicelluloses. In this article, we have attempted to comprehensively review the research work carried out in the direction of usage of lignin-based hydrogel for removal of toxic pollutants including metal ions and dyes.

In this work, we report facile synthesis and characterization of new cellulose acetate-hydroxyapatite membranes for water purification and biomedical applications. The membranes were synthesized from a polymer solution in N, N’-dimethylformamide (12% wt.) where different concentrations of hydroxyapatite (1, 2, 4% wt. based on the amount of polymer) were dispersed using sonication. The synthesis of membranes was carried out by precipitation employing phase inversion using deionized water. The morphological and structural characterization of the synthesized membranes was carried out using SEM, EDS and FT-IR. Thermal characterization (TGA & DTG) and water flows analysis of the synthesized membranes was also carried out. The SEM analysis confirmed the presence of hydroxyapatite micro/nanostructured particles in the membrane as well as significant changes in the morphology of the membranes surface. The presence of inorganic compounds was also found to influence the thermal or hydrodynamic properties of the composite membranes, leading to a more stable hydrodynamic behavior, flow variation in time being much lower compared to the control membrane of cellulose acetate.

However, it also suffers from a few disadvantages and requires further development to achieve the targeted results and desired range of efficiency. Natural polysaccharide based hydrogels display unique properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, stimuli-responsive characteristics and biological functions making them a materials of choice for diverse applications. Indeed during the last few years, a number of biorenewable polymers based hydrogels have attracted great interest for miscellaneous applications including biomedical, toxic ion removal and water purification. Keeping in mind the advantages of biorenewable polymers, this article summarizes for the first time, the recent development in psyllium polysaccharide based hydrogels. Different methods for preparation of polysaccharide hydrogels along with characterization, their swelling behavior and different mechanisms of solvent diffusion are critically reviewed. This article also comprehensively discusses the structure-property relationships of polysaccharide hydrogels and highlights the application potential for prime performance of the resulting hydrogels. Effect of different reaction conditions and monomers on different properties of the resulting hydrogels have been explored. The most important properties of polysaccharide hydrogels relevant to their biomedical/environmental applications are also identified, especially for the use of polysaccharide hydrogels as drug delivery/flocculant and superabsorbent systems. It is anticipated that the interest in natural polysaccharide based hydrogel will continue to grow as value – added green materials for multifunctional applications.

Recently there has been a growing interest in substituting traditional synthetic polymers with natural polymers for different applications. However, natural polymers such as cellulose suffer from few drawbacks. To become viable potential alternatives of synthetic polymers, cellulosic polymers must have comparable physico-chemical properties to that of synthetic polymers. So in the present work, cellulose polymer has been modified by a series of mercerization and silane functionalization to optimize the reaction conditions. Structural, thermal and morphological characterization of the cellulose has been done using FTIR, TGA and SEM, techniques. Surface modified cellulose polymers were further subjected to evaluation of their properties like swelling and chemical resistance behavior.

Biobased materials are rapidly emerging as alternatives to petroleum-based materials because of rising environmental awareness and augmented consumption of nondegradable polymers. In the present work, the surface characteristics of biorenewable soy flour (SOY) were tailored via free radical-induced graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) to develop novel materials for multifunctional applications. A number of reaction parameters were optimized to maximize the level of grafting. The synthesized acrylonitrile-grafted soy (AN-g-SOY) copolymers were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Polymer composites were prepared using SOY/AN-g-SOY as reinforcement and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as the matrix. Dynamic mechanical analysis results showed that acrylonitrile-grafted SOY exhibited significantly enhanced storage modulus compared to polymer composites reinforced with pristine soy flour.

Recently natural cellulose fibers from different biorenewable resources have attracted the considerable attraction of research community all around the globe owing to their unique intrinsic properties such as biodegradability, easy availability, environmental friendliness, flexibility, easy processing and impressive physico-mechanical properties. Natural cellulose fibers based materials are finding their applications in a number of fields ranging from automotive to biomedical. Natural cellulose fibers have been frequently used as the reinforcement component in polymers to add the specific properties in the final product. A variety of cellulose fibers based polymer composite materials have been developed using various synthetic strategies. Seeing the immense advantages of cellulose fibers, in this article we discuss the processing of biorenewable natural cellulose fibers; chemical functionalization of cellulose fibers; synthesis of polymer resins; different strategies to prepare cellulose based green polymer composites, and diverse applications of natural cellulose fibers/polymer composite materials. The article provides an in depth analysis and comprehensive knowledge to the beginners in the field of natural cellulose fibers/polymer composites. The prime aim of this review article is to demonstrate the recent development and emerging applications of natural cellulose fibers and their polymer materials.

Rising environmental concerns and depletion of petro-chemical resources has resulted in an increased interest in biorenewable polymer-based environmentally friendly materials. Among biorenewable polymers, lignin is the second most abundant and fascinating natural polymer next to cellulose. Lignin is one of the three major components found in the cell walls of natural lignocellulosic materials. Lignin is widely available as a major byproduct of a number of industries involved in retrieving the polysaccharide components of plants for industrial applications, such as in paper making, ethanol production from biomass, etc. The impressive properties of lignin, such as its high abundance, low weight, environmentally friendliness and its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and biodegradable nature, along with its CO2 neutrality and reinforcing capability, make it an ideal candidate for the development of novel polymer composite materials. The effective utilization of raw natural fibers as indispensable component in polymers for developing novel low-cost eco-friendly composites with properties such as acceptable specific strength, low density, high toughness, good thermal properties, and biodegradability is one of the most rapidly emerging fields of research in polymer engineering and science. In fact, raw natural fiber–reinforced composites are the subject of numerous scientific and research projects, as well as many commercial programs. Keeping in mind the immense advantages of raw natural fibers, in the present article we concisely review raw natural fiber/polymer matrix composites with particular focus on their mechanical properties.

Natural lignocellulosic polymers are one of the most promising biodegradable, non-toxic and eco-friendly polymeric materials which have been used to develop various products for number of applications especially in green composites. However, these cellulosic materials have certain drawbacks, like sensitivity to water and moisture, and need to be modified. So in this article, a treatment of lignocellulose biopolymers with suitable acrylate monomer was investigated. The influence of different reaction parameters on efficiency (grafting) was investigated. SEM, TGA and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used to study the graft copolymerization between the monomer and hydroxyl groups of lignocellulosic biopolymers. This article also discusses swelling, and chemical resistance properties of the both the grafted/ungrafted cellulosic biopolymer and their potential candidature for green composite applications.

The present research work deals with the surface modification of natural cellulosic polymers to develop novel materials for different applications. Natural cellulose-graft-poly (methyl acrylate) copolymers were prepared using the free radical induced graft copolymerization technique. Different reaction parameters were optimized to achieve the highest percentage of grafting of natural cellulose-graft-poly (methyl acrylate) copolymers. The natural cellulose graft copolymers were characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TGA, and physicochemical studies. For the evaluation of swelling and the physicochemical mechanism, swelling and chemical resistance studies were carried out in different solvents as well as chemicals.

Rising environmental awareness has resulted in a renewed interest in biological macromolecules obtained from renewable resources. So in view of technological significance of natural lignocellulosic polymers in numerous applications, the present study is an attempt to synthesize lignocellulosic polymers based graft copolymers using free radical polymerization. Different reaction conditions have been studied to synthesize the lignocellulosic graft copolymers. The graft copolymers have been characterized with scanning electron micrography (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The grafted samples have also been screened against different physico-chemical conditions to assess their applicability in different applications.

In view of recent technological significance of green cellulosic polymers in environmentally friendly materials, the present study is an attempt to synthesize Saccaharum cilliare-graft-poly (ethyl acrylate) (Saccaharum cilliare-g-PEA) copolymers via pressure-induced free-radical polymerization. The effect of pressure, time, ratio of monomer, solvent, and initiator concentrations were determined to get the premier percentage of grafting. It has been observed from this study that the physicochemical and thermal properties of the grafted cellulosic polymers have increased to a considerable extent and can be a potential material for a number of applications.

Surface modification of a natural cellulosic polymer system is required to improve the physicochemical properties of the fibers to be used as reinforcement for green composite applications. Surface modification through graft copolymerization improves the existing properties of the cellulosic fibers for a number of applications. Therefore, in the present study, an attempt was made to synthesize butyl acrylate (BA)-g-Saccaharum cilliare fibers using a redox initiator. Graft copolymers were characterized through FT-IR/SEM/TGA/DTA/DTG techniques, and the effect of grafting percentage on the water absorption properties of raw as well as grafted fibers was also investigated.
