The performance of lignin depolymerization is basically determined by the interunit C–O and C–C bonds. Numerous C–O bond cleavage strategies have been developed, while the cleavage of C–C bond between the primary aromatic units remains a challenging task due to the high dissociation energy of C–C bond. Herein, a multifunctional RuRe alloy catalyst was designed, which exhibited exceptional catalytic activity for the cleavage of both C–O and C–C linkages in a broad range of lignin model compounds (β-1, α-5, 5-5, β-O-4, 4-O-5) and two stubborn lignins (kraft lignin and alkaline lignin), affording 97.5% overall yield of monocyclic compounds from model compounds and up to 129% of the maximum theoretical yield of monocyclic products based on C–O bonds cleavage from realistic lignin. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) characterization showed that RuRe (1:1) alloy particles with hexagonal close-packed structure were homogeneously dispersed on the support. Quasi-in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) indicate that Ru species were predominantly metallic state, whereas Re species were partially oxidized; meanwhile, there was a strong interaction between Ru and Re, where the electron transfer from Re to Ru was occurred, resulting in great improvement on the capability of C–O and C–C bonds cleavage in lignin conversion.

Multi-functional host materials possess high conductivity and strong chemical adsorption ability that could directionally catalyze electrochemical conversion of lithium polysulfides, therefore, their rational design is considered to be an effective strategy to solve the notorious “shuttle effect” for Li-S batteries. Herein, ultrafine zirconium boride (ZrB2) nanoparticles of high conductivity is conveniently fabiricated via a solid-state synthesis at relatively low temperature and applied as sulfur host material. The obtained ZrB2/Nitrogen-doped graphene/S (defined as “ZrB2/NG/S”) cathode stably works for 135 cycles at ultrahigh rate of 20 C with capacity of ∼400 mAh g−1. It is worth to note that a long-term cycling performance has been achieved with low decay rate of 0.02 % per cycle within 4000 cycles at 5 C. Moreover, the designed cathode delivers an areal capacity of 6.43 mAh cm−2 upon a high sulfur loading (7.77 mg cm−2) with a lean electrolyte at 1C. Investigations including kinetics analysis, deposition/dissolution of Li2S, in-situ XRD, and density functional theory have been further conducted, and the successfully assembled pouch cell shows a high capacity. The high conductivity, strong chemical adsorption, and bi-functional catalytic ability of ZrB2 based composite endow its high potential for practical application.

Lanthipeptides are one of the largest groups of ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs) and are characterized by the presence of lanthionine (Lan) or methyllanthionine residues (MeLan). Only very few lanthipeptides contain a C-terminal 2-aminovinyl-cysteine (AviCys) motif, but all of them show potent antibacterial activities. Recent advances of genome sequencing led to the rapid accumulation of new biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) for lanthipeptides. In this study, through our genome mining strategy, we found the AviCys containing lanthipeptides are widespread in the bacterial kingdom. A lanthipeptide-type biosynthetic gene cluster was identified from public bacterial genome database. Two new lanthipeptides, daspyromycins A and B (1 and 2) containing AviCys motif, along with two degraded products, daspyromycins C and D (3 and 4), were obtained after heterologous expression of the gene cluster in Streptomyces albus J1074. Daspyromycins A and B showed potent antimicrobial activity against a spectrum of Gram-positive and -negative bacteria including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE).

The members of the solute carrier (SLC) superfamily are vital membrane transporters in human cells. In the present study, we determine the expression and function of SLC5 family members in colorectal cancer (CRC). Expression analysis based on The Cancer Genome Atlas database and potential clinical relation analysis based on the Oncomine database indicate that SLC5A7 is downregulated and is predicted to correlate with the staging, and prognosis response of CRC. Additional results demonstrate that SLC5A7 is downregulated and correlates with good prognosis in patients with CRC. Ectopic expression of SLC5A7 either by overexpression, or uptake of choline efficiently inhibits CRC growth. Examination of the molecular mechanism reveals that SLC5A7 promotes p53 protein expression by directly interacting with and modifying p53 and disrupting the interaction between p53 and MDM2 in wild type p53 CRC cells. Our findings establish the clear correlation between SLC5A7 and tumour growth, providing a novel potential therapeutic target for CRC.

Fungi are important resources for the discovery of bioactive natural products or leading compounds. In our continuous searching for bioactive metabolites from fungi, three previously undescribed cytochalasans, perennisubacins A–C (1‒3), together with three known analogues 4‒6, were isolated from the fungus Perenniporia subacida. Their structures were established by means of spectroscopic methods. Compound 1 showed cytotoxicity against SMMC-7721 with an IC50 value of 23.3 μM, while compound 3 showed cytotoxicity against A-549 with an IC50 value of 37.6 μM. In addition, compound 3 inhibited nitric oxide (NO) production with an IC50 value of 18.4 μM. This is the first report of cytochalasins from the fungus P. subacida and their bioactivities.

The fracture strength of titanium nitride coatings prepared on Ti6Al4V by powder immersion reaction-assisted coating (PIRAC) at 700°C for different processing times has been studied. First, the fracture strength estimation expression was developed based on experimental bending phenomena and deformation analysis, as well as by considering the difference of the mechanical properties of the substrate and titanium nitride coating. The results showed that the fracture strength of the prepared PIRAC titanium nitride coatings increased with increasing processing times. The fracture strengths of the PIRAC titanium nitride coatings prepared at 700°C for 24 h, 48 h, 96 h, and 144 h were about 492.3 MPa, 546.6 MPa, 576.5 MPa, and 729.3 MPa, respectively. Further analysis indicated that such increments of the fracture strength of the coating resulted from the variation in composition, especially, the contents of TiN and Ti2N with higher mechanical properties increased with increasing processing time.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is one of the typical reactive sulfur species, which exhibits an important role in regulating both physiological and pathological processes. Recent studies indicate that H2S also serves as a key signaling molecule in a broad range of regulatory processes in plants. However, in situ imaging and detection of the levels of H2S in plant tissues remains a challenge. In this work, a NIR fluorescent probe (HBTP-H2S) was synthesized to achieve H2S imaging in living plant tissues. HBTP-H2S exhibited high sensitivity toward H2S with a large Stokes shift (250 nm). HBTP-H2S could be applied to HeLa cells to detect the fluctuation of endogenous H2S levels in response to physiological stimulations. Importantly, HBTP-H2S was utilized for direct H2S imaging of rice roots and revealed the upregulation of H2S signaling in response to aluminum ions and flooding stresses. Our work thus provides a new tool to investigate H2S-involved signal interaction and protective resistance of crops under environmental stresses.

A key objective for herbicide research is to develop new compounds with improved bioactivity. Protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPO) is an essential target for herbicide discovery. Here, we report using an in silico structure-guided optimization approach of our previous lead compound 1 and designed and synthesized a new series of compounds 2-6. Systematic bioassays led to the discovery of a highly potent compound 6g, 1-methyl-3-(2,2,7-trifluoro-3-oxo-4-(prop-2-yn-1-yl)-3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[b][1,4]oxazin-6-yl)thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione, which exhibited an excellent and wide spectrum of weed control at the rates of 30-75 g ai/ha by the postemergence application and is relatively safe on maize at 75 g ai/ha. Additionally, the Ki value of 6g to Nicotiana tabacum PPO (NtPPO) was found to be 2.5 nM, showing 3-, 12-, and 18-fold higher potency relative to compound 1 (Ki = 7.4 nM), trifludimoxazin (Ki = 31 nM), and flumioxazin (Ki = 46 nM), respectively. Furthermore, molecular simulations further suggested that the thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine-2,4-dione moiety of 6g could form a more favorable π-π stacking interaction with the Phe392 of NtPPO than the heterocyclic moiety of compound 1. This study provides an effective strategy to obtain enzyme inhibitors with improved performance through molecular simulation and structure-guided optimization.

In schematics and cartoons, the gas-liquid interface is often drawn as solid lines that aid in distinguishing the separation of the two phases. However, on the molecular level, the structure, shape, and size of the gas-liquid interface remain elusive. Furthermore, the interactions of molecules at gas-liquid interfaces must be considered in various contexts, including atmospheric chemical reactions, wettability of surfaces, and numerous other relevant phenomena. Hence, understanding the structure and interactions of molecules at the gas-liquid interface is critical for further improving technologies that operate between the two phases. Electrochemically generated surface nanobubbles provide a stable, reproducible, and high-throughput platform for the generation of a nanoscale gas-liquid boundary. We use total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy to image single-fluorophore labeling of surface nanobubbles in the presence of a surfactant. The accumulation of a surfactant on the nanobubble surface changes the interfacial properties of the gas-liquid interface. The single-molecule approach reveals that the fluorophore adsorption and residence lifetime at the interface is greatly impacted by the charge of the surfactant layer at the bubble surface. We demonstrate that the fluorescence readout is either short- or long-lived depending on the repulsive or attractive environment, respectively, between fluorophores and surfactants. Additionally, we investigated the effect of surfactant chain length and salt type and concentration on the fluorophore lifetime at the nanobubble surface.

Herein, we report the use of a polarity-sensitive, solvatochromic fluorophore Nile red to label and probe individual hydrogen nanobubbles on the surface of an indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode. Nanobubbles are generated from the reduction of water on ITO and fluorescently imaged from the transient adsorption and desorption process of single Nile red molecules at the nanobubble surface. The ability to label and fluorescently image individual nanobubbles with Nile red suggests that the gas/solution interface is hydrophobic in nature. Compared to the short labeling events using rhodamine fluorophores, Nile red-labeled events appear to be longer in duration, suggesting that Nile red has a higher affinity to the bubble surface. The stronger fluorophore-bubble interaction also leads to certain nanobubbles being co-labeled by multiple Nile red molecules, resulting in the observation of super-bright and long-lasting labeling events. Based on these interesting observations, we hypothesize that Nile red molecules may start clustering and form some kind of molecular aggregates when they are co-adsorbed on the same nanobubble surface. The ability to observe super-bright and long-lasting multifluorophore labeling events also allows us to verify the high stability and long lifetime of electrochemically generated surface nanobubbles.

Redox tailoring enzymes play key roles in generating structural complexity and diversity in type II polyketides. In chartreusin biosynthesis, the early 13 C-labeling experiments and bioinformatic analysis suggest the unusual aglycone is originated from a tetracyclic anthracyclic polyketide. Here, we demonstrated that the carbon skeleton rearrangement from a linear anthracyclic polyketide to an angular pentacyclic biosynthetic intermediate requires two redox enzymes. The flavin-dependent monooxygenase ChaZ catalyses a Baeyer-Villiger oxidation on resomycin C to form a seven-membered lactone. Subsequently, a ketoreductase ChaE rearranges the carbon skeleton and affords the α-pyrone containing pentacyclic intermediate in an NADPH-dependent manner via tandem reactions including the reduction of the lactone carbonyl group, Aldol-type reaction, followed by a spontaneous γ-lactone ring formation, oxidation and aromatization. Our work reveals an unprecedented function of a ketoreductase that contributes to generate structural complexity of aromatic polyketide.

A series of non-isocyanate linear high molecular weight poly(ester urethane)s (PETUs) were prepared through an environmentally-friendly route based on dimethyl carbonate, 1,6-hexanediol and 1,6-hexanediamine. In this route, the polyurethane diol was first prepared by the reaction between bis-1,6-hexamethylencarbamate (BHC) and 1,6-hexanediol. A series of polyester soft segments of polyurethane have been synthesized from the polycondensation of adipic acid and different diols, including butanediol, hexanediol, octanediol and decanediol. The subsequent polycondensation of polyurethane diol and polyester diol led to linear PETUs. The resultant polymers were characterized by GPC, FTIR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DSC, WAXD, TGA and tensile test. The results indicated that PETUs possess weight-average molecular weights higher than 1×105 and the tensile strength as high as 10 MPa. The thermal properties, crystallization behavior, microphase separation behavior and morphology were studied by DSC and AFM, and the results indicated that the degree of phase separation was affected by two factors, the crystallization and hydrogen bonding interaction between soft segment and hard segment.

Participants received 48 weeks of monotherapy with acarbose (100 mg three times a day) or metformin (1500 mg once a day). As the hypoglycemic effect of acarbose and metformin has been evaluated in previous reports. This analysis studied the effect of the two antidiabetic drugs on reducing urinary albumin. The percent change in the urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (uACR) from baseline to week 48 was analyzed, and ANCOVA was employed to establish whether the effect in decreasing uACR was mediated by metabolic improvement.Results: Acarbose reduced the adjusted mean percent uACR by − 31.5% (95% confidence interval [CI] − 48.4 to − 7.5) compared with metformin. When adjusting for changes in glycated hemoglobin, body weight, systolic blood pressure and triglycerides or changes in area under the curve of glucagon-like peptide 1 (AUCGLP-1) in the standard meal test, the uACR-lowering effect was not attenuated. If stratified by eGFR, blood glucose level, sex or uACR level, the effect of acarbose versus metformin was consistent across subgroups. The proportion of patients with a reduction in uACR of at least 70% was 48.6% in the acarbose group and 34.1% in the metformin group.Conclusion: Acarbose lowered the uACR compared to metformin in newly diagnosed T2DM patients independent of improvements in hyperglycemia, blood pressure, body weight and triglycerides.Keywords: diabetes mellitus, type 2, diabetic nephropathies, hypoglycemic agents

Aimed at detecting methane (CH4) gas at low operating temperature, porous ZnO/SnO2 nanocomposites were constructed through a simple two-step method. Pure SnO2 with a diameter of approximately 120 nm was first synthesized via a hydrothermal method, and then a smaller and looser ZnO/SnO2 composite structure was obtained by introducing the second component ZnO. The CH4 sensing test results showed that the ZnO/SnO2 composites exhibited lower optimum operating temperature (OOT) than that of pure SnO2. Besides, compared with pure SnO2, the ZnO/SnO2 composite based sensor present higher response to CH4, as well as good repeatability, stability and linearity in a certain range of gas concentration. The improved sensitivity can be mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of porous structure and heterojunction formed between ZnO and SnO2.

Background Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a harmful mycotoxin and secondary metabolite produced by several species of Aspergillus and Penicillium. It is of vital importance to establish a sensitive method to detect OTA in various grains. Objective A novel, highly sensitive chemiluminescence immunoassay was developed to determine OTA in wheat, corn, and poultry feed. Methods The immunomagnetic beads were used as solid phase carriers and separators in the competitive chemiluminescence method. Anti-OTA monoclonal antibodies coated on the magnetic beads were applied as the capturing antibodies, in which OTA would compete with OTA-alkaline phosphatase in binding with OTA antibodies. Results The proposed method exhibited good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.999), adequate OTA recovery rate (83.60–102.50%), and good repeatability. The sensitivity of the proposed method was 2.05 pg/mL. In addition, the method was highly selective and showed no cross-reactions with other mycotoxins (e.g., AFB1, DON, ZEN). The developed method was applied in the analysis of wheat, corn, and two animal feeds successfully. The results obtained by the chemiluminescence method showed a high correlation with those obtained by the HPLC method (correlation coefficient 0.9958). Conclusion This strategy shows great potential for other toxic and harmful mycotoxin detection. Highlights A novel highly rapid and sensitive chemiluminescence immunoassay was established for quantitation of OTA.

Objective Ischemic stroke is a major cause of death in the global population, with a high disability and mortality rate. Lack of regenerative ability is considered to be the fundamental cause. This study aims to determine the effect of Shh pathway, which mediates regenerative signaling in response to CNS injury, on myelin repair and Olig1 expression in focal ischemic lesions in the rat. Methods A model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was established using the intraluminal suture method where the middle cerebral artery (MCA) was restricted for 120 min. Cyclopamine, a specific inhibitor of Shh, or saline was administered 12 h after MCAO surgery and lasted for 7 days. After MCA occlusion, male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly allocated to cyclopamine- or saline-treated groups. A group of no-injection animals after MCAO were used as controls. The Shh signaling pathway, myelinogenesis-related factor MBP and Olig1 were testedby immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR assay. Results The levels of Shh and its component Gli1 were elevated from 1 d up to 14 d following ischemia, indicating that the Shh-Gli1 axis was broadly reactivated. Treatment with cyclopamine can partially block the Shh signaling pathway, prevent myelin repair, and decrease the Olig1 expression following ischemic stroke. Conclusion That blockade of Shh signaling concurrently with the creation of a lesion aggravated ischemic myelin damage, probably via its downstream effects on Olig1 transcription. Shh plays a contributory role during regeneration in the CNS, thereby providing promising new therapeutic strategies to assist in recovery from ischemic stroke.

In this study, a sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography method for zearalenone determination in feeds and grains was established based on the automatic immunomagnetic bead purifier analyzer (KY-AMI-I) for the one-step sample pre-treatment. Various parameters that may affect the analytical performance were investigated. Immunomagnetic bead separation system based on a monoclonal antibody (anti-ZEN antibody-immunomagnetic beads conjugation) was individually prepared for the ZEN purification. Besides, the average recoveries in spiked samples ranged from 75.23 to 102.62%, and the relative standard deviations were between 3.55 and 8.07% (

This study aims to investigate the effect of epigallocatechin gallate on experimental burn wound progression. A deep second-degree burn was produced on male Wistar rats. Epigallocatechin gallate was systemically administrated as treatment intervention. The mitochondrial DNA level in serum and the level of proinflammatory cytokines in burn wounds were detected. The malonaldehyde content, the myeloperoxidase activity, and the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family, pyrin domain-containing 3 inflammasome level in the burn wounds were measured. The histopathological examination of burn wounds was performed, and the time to wound reepithelialization was recorded. Burn resulted in remarkably higher level of mitochondrial DNA release in serum and proinflammatory cytokines in burn wounds. Moreover, the malonaldehyde content, myeloperoxidase activity, and nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family, pyrin domain-containing 3 inflammasome level in burn wounds were significantly higher than that of sham burn. Epigallocatechin gallate treatment significantly reduced mitochondrial DNA level in serum and inflammatory response in burn wounds. Furthermore, the burn wound depth of rats in epigallocatechin gallate group was markedly attenuated, and the wound reepithelialization time was accelerated. Epigallocatechin gallate ameliorated burn wound progression probably through inhibiting the mitochondrial DNA-induced inflammation and protecting wounds from inflammatory infiltration and oxidative damage.

Liquid chemical looping technology is an innovation of chemical looping conversion technology. Using liquid metal oxide as the oxygen carrier during gasification process could prolong the service life of oxygen carrier and improve the process efficiency. In this paper, based on Gibbs minimum free energy method, the thermodynamic characteristics of biomass liquid chemical looping gasification were studied. Cellulose and lignin, the main components of biomass, were taken as the research objects. Bismuth oxide and antimony oxide were selected as liquid oxygen carriers. The results showed that when the temperature increased from 600 °C to 900 °C, the output of H2 and CO in the products of cellulose gasification increased from 0.5 and 0.3 kmol to 1.3 and 2.6 kmol respectively. Different ratios of oxygen carriers to gasification raw materials had the best molar ratio. The addition of steam in the system was beneficial to the increase of H2 content and the increase of H2/CO molar ratio. Bi2O3 and Sb2O3 with different mass ratios were used as mixed oxygen carriers. The simulation results showed that the gasification temperature of biomass with different mixed oxygen carriers had the same equilibrium trend products. It could be seen from the results of product distribution that the influence of the mixing ratio of Bi2O3 and Sb2O3 on gas product distribution could be neglected. These results could provide simulation reference and data basis for subsequent research on liquid chemical looping gasification.

In this paper, a novel H2Ti2O5@MoS2@SiO2 ternary composite material was prepared by a combination of dual hydrothermal method and controlled hydrolysis method, in which H2Ti2O5 nanotubes are tightly combined with hierarchical molybdenum disulfide, and the unique structure of titanate nano whiskers, including the loosely bound alkali metal ions between the titanate layers with high dielectric constant and the large aspect ratio, which induce active response to the electric field. Flower-like molybdenum disulfide provides electrical conductivity, and silicon dioxide as a insulative coating layer can suppress excessive the electrical conductivity of the two-dimensional material. The morphological evolution was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results of showed that the sheet-shaped molybdenum disulfide coated with curved H2Ti2O5 nanotubes showed a honeycomb structure with uniform size. Silicon oxide acts as a cladding layer to increase the thickness of the flakes. The existence of H2Ti2O5, molybdenum disulfide and silicon dioxide is confirmed by X-ray powder diffractometer (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The prepared product was confirmed by XPS, BET test and electrorheological rheometer. Core/shell nanoparticles not only exert the active response characteristics of titanate nanoparticles and molybdenum disulfide to electric field, but also inherit the excellent characteristics of a core-shell structure produced by the interface polarization and the synergistic effect of the polar groups on the surface of the two-dimensional material further enhance the electrorheological effect.

In this paper, a photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) recovery of toxic H2S into H2 and S system was proposed using a novel bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI)/ tungsten trioxide (WO3) nano-flake arrays (NFA) photoanode. The BiOI/WO3 NFA with a vertically aligned nanostructure were uniformly prepared on the conductive substrate via transformation of tungstate following an impregnating hydroxylation of BiI3. Compared to pure WO3 NFA, the BiOI/WO3 NFA promotes a significant increase of photocurrent by 200%. Owing to the excellent stability and photoactivity of the BiOI/WO3 NFA photoanode and $${{\rm{I}}^ - }{\rm{/I}}_3^ - $$ catalytic system, the PEC system toward splitting of H2S totally converted S2− into S without any polysulfide ( $${\rm{S}}_x^{n - }$$ ) under solar-light irradiation. Moreover, H2 was simultaneously generated at a rate of about 0.867 mL/(h ·cm). The proposed PEC H2S splitting system provides an efficient and sustainable route to recover H2 and S.

In high-frequency gate drivers, especially for wide-bandgap applications, hundreds of voltages per nanosecond noise would be generated. Therefore, the sub-ns delay level shifter with high dV/dt immunity is necessary for signal conversion among different voltage domain areas. This article presents design techniques for the sub-ns delay level shifter with ultrahigh dV/dt immunity. The propagation delay of the proposed floating level shifter is dramatically reduced by utilizing the edge detection technique. In order to further improve the performance, auxiliary pull-up circuit, promoting delay matching, and self-calibration techniques are adopted, which make the proposed level shifters more suitable for high-frequency wide-bandgap applications. The level shifter is fabricated in a 0.5 μ m bipolar CMOS DMOS (BCD) process, whose results demonstrate the final level shifter achieves zero static power consumption, a 0.024 mm2 active area, and dV/dt immunity up to 250 V/ns. The measurement results show that the sub-ns delay level shifter can be realized, and the minimum delay is only 664 ps at VSSH 25 V. Its figure of merit is just 0.044 ns/( μ m × V), which is optimal among previous level shifters. The level shifters are also simulated at the 0.18 μ m BCD process, and the propagation delay can be decreased by more than 60%.

Tooth bleaching is becoming increasingly popular among patients with tooth staining, but the safety of bleaching agents on tooth structure has been questioned. Primarily thriving on the biofilm formation on enamel surface, Streptococcus mutans has been recognized as a major cariogenic bacterial species. The present study is aimed at investigating how cold-light bleaching would change enamel roughness and adhesion of Streptococcus mutans. Human premolars were divided into 72 enamel slices and allocated into 3 groups: (1) control, (2) cold-light bleaching with 35% hydrogen peroxide (Beyond™), and (3) 35% hydrogen peroxide (Beyond™) alone. Biofilms of Streptococcus mutans were cultivated on enamel slices in 5% CO2 ( v / v ) at 37°C for 1 day or 3 days. Enamel surfaces and biofilms were observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was applied to quantify the roughness of enamel surface, and the amounts of biofilms were measured by optical density of scattered biofilm and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Cold-light bleaching significantly increased ( p < 0.05 ) surface roughness of enamel compared to controls, but significantly inhibited ( p < 0.05 ) adhesion of Streptococcus mutans on enamel in the bacterial cultures of both 1 day and 3 days. In conclusion, cold-light bleaching could roughen enamel surface but inhibit Streptococcus mutans adhesion at the preliminary stage after the bleaching treatment.

Hyperoside has a variety of pharmacological activities, including anti-liver injury, anti-depression, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer activities. However, the effect of hyperoside on Parkinson's disease (PD) is still unclear. Therefore, we tried to study the therapeutic effect and mechanism of hyperoside on PD in vivo and in vitro models. Rotenone was used to induce PD rat model and SH-SY5Y cell injury model, and hyperoside was used for intervention. Immunohistochemistry, animal behavior assays, TUNEL and Western blot were constructed to observe the protective effect and related mechanisms of hyperoside in vivo. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), flow cytometry, Rh123 staining and Western blot were used for in vitro assays. Rapamycin (RAP) pretreatment was used in rescue experiments to verify the relationship between hyperoside and autophagy in rotenone-induced SH-SY5Y cells. Hyperoside promoted the number of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive cells, improved the behavioral defects of rats, and inhibited cell apoptosis in vivo. Different concentrations of hyperoside had no significant effect on SH-SY5Y cell viability, but dramatically reversed the rotenone-induced decrease in cell viability, increased apoptosis and loss of cell mitochondrial membrane potential in vitro. Additionally, hyperoside reversed the regulation of rotenone on the Beclin1, LC3II, Bax, cleaved caspase 3, Cyc and Bcl-2 expressions in rat SNpc tissues and SH-SY5Y cells, while promoted the regulation of rotenone on the P62 and α-synuclcin. Furthermore, RAP reversed the effect of hyperoside on rotenone-induced SH-SY5Y cells. Hyperoside may play a neuroprotective effect in rotenone-induced PD rat model and SH-SY5Y cell model by affecting autophagy.

Materials with high thermal conductivity are of great importance to the thermal management of modern electronic devices. Recently, it was found that cubic boron arsenide (c-BAs) is a high thermal conductivity (κ) material with a value of ∼1300 W/(m·K) at room temperature (RT), where four-phonon scattering plays a crucial role in limiting the κ. In this work, with four-phonon scattering included, we find that the κ of wurtzite BAs (w-BAs) reaches as high as 1036 W/(m·K) along the a-b plane at RT, decreasing by 43% compared to the calculation without considering four-phonon scattering. The similar phonon transport properties between c-BAs and w-BAs can be understood in terms of similar projected density of states and scattering rates, which have the origin in crystal structural resemblance. To accelerate the calculation, the moment tensor potential derived from machine learning is adopted and proven to be a reliable and efficient method to obtain high-order interatomic force constants.

Catalytic conversion of lignin into heteroatom functionalized chemicals is of great importance to bring the biorefinery concept into reality. Herein, a new strategy was designed for direct transformation of lignin β-O-4 model compounds into benzylamines and phenols in moderate to excellent yields in the presence of organic amines. The transformation involves dehydrogenation of C α -OH, hydrogenolysis of the C β -O bond and reductive amination in the presence of Pd/C catalyst. Experimental data suggest that the dehydrogenation reaction proceeds over the other two reactions and that secondary amines serve as both reducing agents and amine sources in the transformation. Moreover, the concept of "lignin to benzylamines" was demonstrated by a two-step process. This work represents a first example of synthesis of benzylamines from lignin, thus providing a new opportunity for the sustainable synthesis of benzylamines from renewable biomass, and expanding the products pool of biomass conversion to meet future biorefinery demands.

Synergistic effects from fast co-pyrolysis of low-rank coal with lignin via on-line mass spectrometry were explored. Iso-conversional method was used to obtain frequency factor and activation energy of main gaseous products. The morphology evolution of both individual and co-pyrolysis char was analyzed via fractal theory quantificationally. The results indicated that various synergistic effects were found from the distribution and composition of products. CO and CO2 were the main content of the gaseous products, and the content of CO from lignin increased with the temperature. Lignin promoted the generation of tar and inhibited the formation of gaseous products during fast co-pyrolysis, which reflected different synergistic effects, respectively. Positive synergistic effects were observed from the component proportion of CH4 as the temperature increasing higher than 600 °C. Kinetic analysis indicated that activation energy for H2 from lignin and low-rank coal was 32.21 and 59.90 kJ/mol, and higher temperature would be beneficial for H2 formation. Fractal analysis indicated that lignin promoted the surface morphology of co-pyrolysis char to become more complicated, with the fractal dimension of individual char less than those of co-pyrolysis char.

In this letter, the origin and related physical insights of gate reliability issues under various V gs and high temperatures (up to 300 °C) are revealed in-depth, through splitting MOS gate structure of silicon carbide (SiC) metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) into N-type JFET and P-type channel region under identical manufacturing processes and thermal budgets of SiC MOSFETs. From 25 to 300 °C, the safety limit of positive V gs of SiC MOSFETs is mainly dependent on the gate oxide on the JFET surface, whereas that of negative V gs is dependent on the gate oxide on the channel surface. The gate oxide on the channel surface is weaker than that on the JFET surface in terms of Fowler–Nordheim (F-N) tunneling, resulting in asymmetric safety V gs of current SiC MOSFET. Moreover, when temperature ranges from 25 to 150 °C, the degradation of gate oxide under −15 V V gs V gs Q BD) of gate oxide is severely degraded at 300 °C mainly due to the barrier height ( ${\it{ \Phi}}_{\rm B}$ ) degradation. These efforts can provide accurate weakness points of gate oxide under higher V gs bias (particular for negative bias) and higher temperature (300 °C) for SiC MOSFETs, further helping use and design rugged converters with the fast-speed operation of SiC MOSFETs.

Objective: To establish a new classification of biliary tumor thrombus (BTT). Methods: Overall survival of patients with BTT was first used to determine whether it correlated with current hepatocellular carcinoma staging systems. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine factors affecting the overall survival (OS) to form the basis of our new classification for BTT. Results: All 6 international staging systems showed overlapping survival curves. Univariate followed by multivariate analyses showed that total bilirubin and intrahepatic/extrahepatic BTT were significant risk factors of OS. Based on these data, a new BTT classification was defined as: Type I: intrahepatic BTT; and Type II: extrahepatic BTT involving a common bile duct or common hepatic duct. Type I was further subdivided into type Ia: BTT involving a second-order intrahepatic duct or above, and type Ib: BTT involving a first-order intrahepatic duct. Type II was further subdivided into type IIa and type IIb using a cut-off total bilirubin (TB) > 300 μmol/L. The numbers (percentages) of patients with types I and II BTT were 69 (34.2%) and 133 (65.8%), respectively. The median OS of type I patients was significantly higher than that of type II patients (37.5 months vs. 23.2 months; P = 0.002). Using subgroup analyses, OS outcomes were significantly different between the subgroups of type IIb and type IIa, although there was no significant difference between the type Ia and type Ib subgroups (P = 0.07). Conclusions: A new BTT classification was established to predict prognoses of HCC patients with BTT who underwent liver resection.

Seahorse embryos are brooded in the enclosed nutrient-rich environment of the male brood pouch, which may be prone to bacterial infection. The immune responses of interleukin (IL) genes in the brood pouch have not been well studied. We identified 13 interleukins in the lined seahorse Hippocampus erectus. Tissue-specific expression analysis revealed increased mRNA expression levels of il-1β, il-18, and il-8 in the brood pouch. When challenged with lipopolysaccharide or Vibrio parahaemolyticus, il-1β and il-18 were active as part of the acute and chronic inflammatory responses, respectively. Importantly, il-8 may be involved in powerful antibacterial immune responses and may be induced by il-1β and il-18 via a process involving the nuclear factor-κB signaling pathway. These results suggest that il-1β, il-18, and il-8 may play key roles in the antibacterial immune defense of the brood pouch in male seahorses.

Sensitive and rapid analysis of zearalenone (ZEN) in grains and feed is essential to guarantee the food security for human health. Herein a chemiluminescence method was demonstrated to measure the content of zearalenone in food samples. An immunomagnetic beads-anti-ZEN monoclonal antibody complex was prepared. Besides, the immunomagnetic beads were utilized as the solid support for rendering the immunoassay through the rapid formation of immune complexes in the solution, rapid separation and efficient heterogeneous detection. Under the optimal experimental parameters, the standard curve of ZEN detection is y = − 0.3839x + 0.1565 (R2 = 0.9978), the signal ratio has a well linear relationship with the logarithm of ZEN concentration in the range of 0.03–2.43 ng/mL. The limit detection of zearalenone in the developed assay was 0.01 ng/mL. The applicability of the reported approach for zearalenone detection in grains was demonstrated. In addition, the good recoveries of zearalenone were obtained, ranging from 85.15 to 102.60% at 5, 50, 150 ng/g spiked ZEN concentrations. The relative standard deviation was

Cordycepin is a major bioactive compound found in Cordyceps sinensis that exhibits a broad spectrum of biological activities. Here a Paecilomyces hepiali OR-1 strain was initially isolated from plateau soil for the bioproduction of cordycepin. Subsequently, strain modification including 60Co γ-ray and ultraviolet irradiation were employed to increase the cordycepin titer, resulted in a high-yield mutant strain P. hepiali ZJB18001 with the cordycepin content of 0.61 mg/gDCW, showing a 2.3-fold to that from the wild strain (0.26 mg/gDCW). Furthermore, medium screening based on Box-Behnken design and the response surface methodology facilitated the enhancement of cordycepin yield to the value of 0.96 mg/gDCW at 25 °C for 5 days in submerged cultivation with an optimized medium composition. The high cordycepin yield, rapid growth rate and stable genetic characteristics of P. hepiali ZJB18001 are beneficial in terms of costs and time for the industrialization of cordycepin production.

The apparent viscosity of binary particles has a crucial impact on the efficiency of gas-solid separation fluidized bed. Herein, apparent viscosity of the binary particles consisting of magnetite and coal particles was measured by the falling ball method. The test results indicate that the apparent viscosity of binary particles decreased with the increase in coal powder. When the mass fraction of coal increased by 2%, the apparent viscosity, on an average, decreased by 0.12 Pa·s, and dropped by half with increase in operating gas speed from 9.5 cm/s to 12.2 cm/s. The adjustment of gas velocity and magnetite powder content can effectively reduce the apparent viscosity and improve the separation efficiency, without changing the bed density. A modified model has been developed for predicting the apparent viscosity of binary particle. The model performed well in estimating the viscosity with an overall standard deviation of 13.00% from experimental results.

Background The carcinogenic effect of NUP37 has been reported recently in a variety of tumors, but its research in the field of glioma has not been paid attention. The main purpose of this study is to reveal the relationship between NUP37 and prognosis or clinical characteristics of glioma patients. Methods First, as a retrospective study, this study included thousands of tissue samples based on a variety of public databases and clinicopathological tissues. Second, a series of bioinformatics analysis methods were used to analyze the NUP37 and glioma samples from multiple databases such as the CGGA, TCGA, GEO, HPA, and GEPIA. Third, to analyze the relationship between the expression level of NUP37 in tumor tissues and cells and a variety of clinical prognostic molecular characteristics, whether it can be an independent risk factor leading to poor prognosis in glioma and whether it has clinical diagnostic value; GSEA was used to analyze the cancer‐related signaling pathways that may be activated by high expression of NUP37. Fifth, CMap was used to analyze small molecule drugs that may inhibit NUP37 expression. Finally, the meta‐analysis of thousands of tissue samples from seven datasets and cell proliferation and migration experiments confirmed that NUP37 has a malignant effect on glioma. Results NUP37 is highly expressed in glioma patient tissues and glioma cells, significantly correlates with reduced overall survival, and may serve as an independent prognostic factor with some diagnostic value. Silencing NUP37 suppresses malignant biological behaviors of glioma cells. 4 small molecule drugs that had potential targeting inhibitory effects on NUP37 overexpression. Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the association between the serum sclerostin, the coronary artery calcification (CAC), and patient outcomes in maintenance dialysis patients. Methods: We performed a prospective cohort study of 65 maintenance dialysis patients in 2014, including 39 patients on peritoneal dialysis and 26 on hemodialysis, and followed up for 5 years. Parameters of mineral metabolism including bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, fibroblast growth factor 23, sclerostin, and other biochemical factors were determined at the baseline. Meanwhile, the CAC score was analyzed by cardiac computed tomography. Results: Serum sclerostin in hemodialysis patients was significantly higher than that in peritoneal dialysis patients (632.35 ± 369.18 vs. 228.85 ± 188.92, p < 0.001). The patients with CAC were older, receiving hemodialysis, lower Kt/V, and had longer dialysis vintage, as well as higher levels of serum 25-(OH)-vit D and sclerostin. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, older age and lower Kt/V were risk factors for CAC. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves for prediction of CAC by sclerostin was 0.74 (95% confidence interval 0.605–0.878, p = 0.03), and the cutoff value of sclerostin is 217.55 pg/mL with the sensitivity 0.829 and specificity 0.619. After 5 years of follow-up, 51 patients survived. The patients in the survival group had significantly lower age, sclerostin levels, and low CAC scores than the nonsurvival group. Old age (≥60 years, p < 0.001) and high CAC score (≥50 Agatston unit, p = 0.031) were significant risk factors for the patient survival. Conclusions: Sclerostin is significantly elevated in dialysis patients with CAC. But sclerostin is not a risk factor for CAC. After 5 years of follow-up, patients in the survival group are younger and have lower sclerostin levels and CAC scores. But sclerostin levels are not independent risk factors for high mortality in dialysis patients.

In this paper, the contact interface between FGH96 superalloy melts and refractory slurry with corundum powder and silica sol at 1600°C with different soaking time in 10-240 min range was investigated. The morphology and composition of the contact interface were studied by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results show that the reaction layer formed on the contact interface between the melting superalloy and the refractory slurry, and is mainly consist of Alumina and contains a small amount of other metal elements such as Ti and Cr. The reaction layer was not smooth on the micro level, and there was a peninsula-like structure protruding into the internal part of the melting superalloy on the reaction zone, and even started to fall off at some places to form islands. With the increase of soaking time, the reaction between melt of superalloy and refractory slurry increased gradually and the reaction layer began to combine with the refractory slurry substrate and form obvious interaction layered structure, resulting in the corrosion of refractory slurry substrate. With the soaking time over 120 min, the stable contact interface was destroyed. Thermodynamic calculation shows that the substitution reaction between Al in superalloy and SiO2 in refractory slurry meets the thermodynamic conditions, and the reaction can proceed forward.

Summary Linalool is one of the common flavour‐related volatiles across the plant kingdom and plays an essential role in determining consumer liking of plant foods. Although great process has been made in identifying terpene synthase (TPS) genes associated with linalool synthesis, much less is known about regulation of this pathway. We initiated study by identifying PpTPS3 encoding protein catalysing enantiomer (S)‐(+)‐linalool synthesis, which is a major linalool component (˜70%) observed in ripe peach fruit. Overexpression of PpTPS3 led to linalool accumulation, while virus‐induced gene silencing of PpTPS3 led to a 66.5% reduction in linalool content in peach fruit. We next identified transcription factor (TF) PpbHLH1 directly binds to E‐box (CACATG) in the PpTPS3 promoter and activates its expression based on yeast one‐hybrid assay and EMSA analysis. Significantly positive correlation was also observed between PpbHLH1 expression and linalool production across peach cultivars. Peach fruit accumulated more linalool after overexpressing PpbHLH1 in peach fruit and reduced approximately 54.4% linalool production after silencing this TF. DNA methylation analysis showed increased PpTPS3 expression was associated with decreased 5 mC level in its promoter during peach fruit ripening, but no reverse pattern was observed for PpbHLH1. Arabidopsis and tomato fruits transgenic for peach PpbHLH1 synthesize and accumulate higher levels of linalool compared with wild‐type controls. Taken together, these results would greatly facilitate efforts to enhance linalool production and thus improve flavour of fruits.

Total-ionizing-dose (TID) radiation response on unclosed edge termination is investigated for high voltage silicon-on-insulator (SOI) laterally diffused metal–oxide–semiconductor (LDMOS) in this article. Radiation-induced dual-channel leakage current model is proposed to reveal the mechanism of leakage current generation at OFF-state. Radiation causes a mass of positive oxide trapped charges generated in field oxide (FOX) layer and buried oxide layer. Owing to the P-SOI layer with significantly low doping concentration, two inversion channels are formed at the surface and bottom in the edge termination region, which provides parallel conduction paths. Electrons from the source N+ are pulled down and flow along the bottom channel while punchthrough occurring. The radiation-induced leakage current could be suppressed by thinning FOX layer, increasing the doping concentration of the P-SOI layer, and thickening the SOI layer.

The electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to carbon monoxide (CO) is a favorable approach to reduce CO2 emission while converting excess sustainable energy to important chemical feedstocks. At high current density (>100 mA cm−2), low energy efficiency (EE) and unaffordable cell cost limit the industrial application of conventional CO2 electrolyzers. Thus, a crucial and urgent task is to design a new type of CO2 electrolyzer that can work efficiently at high current density. Here we report a polymer‐supported liquid layer (PSL) electrolyzer using polypropylene non‐woven fabric as a separator between anode and cathode. Ag based cathode was fed with humid CO2 and potassium hydroxide was fed to earth‐abundant NiFe‐based anode. In this configuration, the PSL provided high‐pH condition for the cathode reaction and reduced the cell resistance, achieving a high full cell EE over 66 % at 100 mA cm−2.

Encapsulation and controlled release of volatile molecules such as fragrances in a designed manner is important but challenging for the flavor and fragrance industry. Here, we report the tuning release of volatile molecules by postsynthetic modification of an amine-terminated metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-101-NH2. By amidation, we obtained three MIL-101 MOFs, the trimethylacetamide-terminated TC-MIL-101, the benzamide-terminated BC-MIL-101, and the oxalic acid monoamide-terminated OC-MIL-101. All the MOFs can efficiently encapsulate volatile molecules. Moreover, we demonstrate that the release profile of volatiles can be widely tuned to sustain the release in several days to months and even over a year using different modified MIL-101 MOFs. We show that the release profiles are correlated with the binding energies between the guest volatiles and pores in MOFs. The pore diffusion and the synergistic transport are the rate-limiting step of the guest molecules from the modified MOFs.
