OBJECTIVE Alcohol cue salience is considered core to the broader understanding of drinking behaviors. In the present research, we sought to build the knowledge of alcohol cue salience by exploring P3 responses to alcohol images among social drinkers within a large-scale alcohol-administration study. METHOD Participants (N = 246) were randomly assigned to receive either a moderate dose of alcohol (target BAC = .08%) or a nonalcoholic control beverage. Following beverage administration, participants engaged in image-viewing tasks while EEG was recorded. We examined the impact of alcohol on the amplitude of P3 responses to pictures of alcoholic versus nonalcoholic beverages, exploring both beverage-manipulation and individual-difference moderators of these effects. RESULTS Results revealed a significant effect of acute alcohol intoxication on P3 responses across stimulus types, with the overall amplitude of P3 being significantly smaller among participants consuming alcohol versus a nonalcoholic beverage. In addition, results revealed a significant main effect of image type, such that P3 amplitude was larger for alcohol images compared to nonalcohol images. No interactions emerged between stimulus type and beverage condition or stimulus type and AUD risk level. CONCLUSIONS With the aim of better understanding the potential influence of the broader context on responses to individual cues, the present study examined the perceived salience of alcohol cues within a drinking setting. Findings provide evidence for alcohol cue salience that is both robust and also widespread across drinkers. More generally, the present study's findings may offer new directions for understanding neurocognitive processes of alcohol cue salience across contexts. Introduction: The consumption of large amounts of ethanol can directly lead to acute gastric mucosal bleeding, edema, and erosion, while long-term drinking has been associated with gastric ulcers. Previous research has demonstrated that Har Gabur, a traditional Mongolian medicine, alleviates gastric ulcers through the physical adsorption of its carbon components. It is well known that the immune response has an important role in gastric ulceration. Methods: In the present study, we used an ethanol-induced injury cell and mice model to investigate whether Har Gabur can inhibit the immune response stimulated by ethanol and identify the active constituents of Har Gabur involved in this process. Results: We found that Har Gabur significantly repressed the activated Fas/FasL signal pathway and endogenous Bax/Bcl-2 apoptosis pathway. The molecular mechanism of the protective effect most likely involved the transcription or mRNA stability, as Har Gabur remarkably reversed the change in mRNA level of apoptosis-related genes induced by ethanol. Conclusion: Har Gabur operated in a cell-state-specific manner in vivo without inducing adverse effects in normal mice. Importantly, GO was identified as the main active ingredient of Har Gabur for gastric ulcers.

Background: Acne is a serious skin problem that affects mostly adolescents. The topical and systematic therapies are effective but could lead to several side effects and the emergence of antibacterial resistance of the acne-causing bacteria. Plant resources have been used as traditional medicine for centuries and can be the alternative therapies for acne treatment. Antioxidants are compounds that can prevent or delay the oxidation of substrates when present in low concentrations. Antioxidants are usually involved in several mechanisms of action, including the inhibition of free radical generation, enhancement of the scavenging capacity against free radicals, and reducing power. Methods: In this study, three antioxidant assays, DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP were used to evaluate the antioxidant properties of the ethanolic extracts of five plant extracts (A. bilimbi, M. nigra, O. stamineus, P. granatum, and E. longifolia). Furthermore, the study aimed to identify the most potent plant extracts and their combination which could provide better antibacterial activities against acnecausing bacteria. Ethanolic extracts of A. bilimbi, O. stamineus, M. nigra, P. granatum, and E. longifolia were prepared by the Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) technique. Their phytochemical contents were screened using several biochemical tests and GC-MS analysis. Results: The study found that only the extracts of P. granatum and O. stamineus exhibited good antioxidant activity using DPPH assay (82.37% and 81.72% μg/mL respectively) and in ABTS assay (87.25% and 88.85% μg/mL respectively); their observed FRAP values were 115.1667 ± 5.6182 and 41.3860 ± 2.4583 μg/mL, respectively. The preliminary antibacterial screening using the disc diffusion method showed that P. granatum and O. stamineus were the most potent extracts; hence, both extracts were combined at the ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1 to a total concentration of 400 mg/mL. Discussion: The antibacterial efficacy of the mixture was studied using the disc diffusion method and the MIC value was determined. Both S. aureus and S. epidermidis were sensitive to all the individual and combined extracts but C. acnes was resistant to all of them. Conclusion: The antibacterial activity of the combined extracts against S. aureus showed a synergistic effect at the ratio of 2:1 with the inhibitory zone diameter of 18.00 ± 1.00 mm and MIC value of 12.5 mg/mL; however, antagonistic effects were observed against S. epidermidis while no effect was noted against C. acnes. Therefore, all the selected plant extracts exhibited antibacterial activities against certain bacteria and their effects may be enhanced by combining the plant extracts.

Pt-nanoparticles supported on halloysite-nanotubes (HNTs) were selectively deposited onto the inner (Pt(IN)/HNT) or outer (Pt(OUT)/HNT) surface of the support to evaluate their operational stability on the cleaner and efficient hydrogenation of nitro compounds to produce their corresponding anilines. The formation of Pt0-aggregates on the inner or outer surfaces was observed, with mean particles sizes of 2.4–2.9 nm. The catalysts were evaluated using ethanol as solvent and nitrobenzene as a model substrate at a temperature of 298 K, under 1 bar of H2 pressure. The Pt(IN)/HNT catalyst showed better catalytic performance than Pt(OUT)/HNT, which was mainly attributed to the confinement effect of the Pt-nanoparticles inside the HNTs. However, the operational stability showed that Pt(OUT)/HNT retained its catalytic performance after 15 cycles, while the Pt(IN)/HNT catalyst suffered deactivation after the 5th cycle. The best catalytic system showed a moderate-to-high efficiency in the efficient hydrogenation of 7 nitro compounds used to produce their corresponding anilines, which are important pharmaceutical building blocks.

Swift cooling crystallization of vanillin was investigated in water, ethanol, isopropanol and ethyl acetate. Morphology and polymorph evolution of vanillin were discussed in terms of solvent, supersaturation ratio and silica template. PXRD, DSC, FTIR and microscope were used to identify polymorphs of vanillin. Results showed that the nucleated polymorphs of vanillin depended largely on the solvent, supersaturation ratio and silica template. Low supersaturation ratios favor the nucleation of stable form I in water, and high supersaturation ratio exceeds 7 generating 100% metastable form II. However, if the supersaturation ratio is too high (S>8), liquid–liquid phase separation will occur, and no crystals could be obtained. In other solvents such as ethanol, isopropanol and ethyl acetate, only form I was obtained. However, it should be noted that the morphology of form I prepared in ethanol, isopropanol and ethyl acetate is distinct from that obtained in water, the former is flake-like and the latter is rod-like. The nucleation of vanillin from different solution was also studied with the presence of SiO2, SiO2–NH2 and SiO2−COOH templates, which did not change the nucleated polymorph of vanillin, but changed the nucleation and growth rate of stable form I.

Although alcohol expectancies and subjective response are independent predictors of drinking, social-cognitive theory suggests that expectancies may distort one's subjective response, creating discrepancies between expected and actual alcohol effects. A recent cross-sectional study found that unmet expectancies (using difference scores) were associated with heavier drinking. However, cross-sectional data cannot establish temporal precedence, and using difference scores ignores important conditional main effects. As such, the current study sought to evaluate how expectancy-subjective response discrepancies predict future drinking using prospective data and an interaction approach. Participants (N = 258) were randomly assigned to consume alcohol (target BAC = .08%) within a placebo-controlled alcohol administration session. Alcohol expectancies and subjective response were assessed across the full valence by arousal affective space using parallel measures. Results indicated a significant high arousal positive (HIGH+) interaction, such that, as HIGH+ expectancies increased, individuals at low and mean levels of HIGH+ subjective response drank more heavily 12 months later. There was also a significant high arousal negative (HIGH-) interaction with a similar pattern of moderated effects. No interactions were found for low arousal effects. These results indicate that individuals with unmet HIGH+ and HIGH- expectancies drink more heavily 12 months later, controlling for prior drinking. This suggests that clinicians may consider recommending specific interventions (e.g., expectancy challenges vs. pharmacotherapy) based upon an individual's levels of expectancies and subjective response to optimize intervention efficacy. A series of bifunctional ZnCe@SBA-15 catalysts with different Zn/Ce ratios were prepared by a solid-state grinding strategy and used in the conversion of ethanol to 1,3-butadiene (ETB). For the supported metal oxides, ZnO serves as the active sites for the dehydrogenation of ethanol, and CeO2 promotes the aldol-condensation reaction. Based on the results of Py-FTIR and NH3-TPD, it suggests that the yield of 1,3-butadiene is positively correlated with the number of weak Lewis acid sites on the catalyst surface, given their benefit for aldol-condensation reactions. The catalyst with an optimal Zn/Ce ratio of about 1:5 has the highest concentration of weak Lewis acid. Coupling with the ZnO sites, it contributes to a 98.4% conversion of ethanol and a 45.2% selective of 1,3-butadiene under relatively mild reaction conditions (375 °C, 101.325 kPa, and 0.54 h−1).

Alcohol fuels oxidation plays a significant role in carbon sustainable cycling and high-performance catalyst with a strong anti-poisoning effect is desired. Herein, Pt-Ni alloy supported on the N-doped graphene aerogel synthesized by simple freeze-drying and annealing was demonstrated to have such catalytic ability for alcohol fuel oxidation. Pt-Ni alloy particles were found uniformly dispersed over the surface of 3D N-doped graphene aerogel. High anti-poisoning ability for CO-like intermediates oxidation was demonstrated by the CO-stripping experiment. The as-prepared catalyst was found to have outstanding catalytic performance for methanol and ethanol oxidation with high catalytic activity, stability and catalytic kinetics. Compared to the control samples, the improved catalytic ability could be due to the presence of oxophilic Ni species and the support effect of 3D N-doped graphene aerogel that combined multi-advantages of large surface area, facile mass transfer, and abundant defects.

Chronic stress can have an adverse effect on behavior changes and damage to the pyramidal neurons of the brain. Pyramidal neurons of the brain play an important role in awareness, decision making, cognitive function, spatial memory formation and working memory. The effects of chlorogenic acid (CGA) found in arabica coffee can affect the improvement of cognitive function, working memory, and histology of brain pyramidal neurons. The content of chlorogenic acid (CGA) in coffee has active compounds that can maintain the number of brain pyramidal neurons due to stress. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of arabica coffee extract on the average number of brain pyramidal neurons exposed to UCS stress. The research method used was a post-test experimental study with controlled group design. A total of 24 adult zebrafish (3 months old) were divided into 4 groups. Four groups (KN, KP, K25, K50) were acclimatized (1 week) first, for groups K25 and K50 were given arabica coffee extract as much as 25mg / dl and 50 mg / dl for 4 days before inducing unpredictable chronic stress (UCS). Green and economical CO2 utilization is significant for CO2 emission reduction and energy development. Here, the 1D Mo2C nanowires with dominant (101) crystal surfaces were modified by the deposition of atomic functional components Rh and K. While unmodified β­Mo2C could only convert CO2 to methanol, the designed catalyst of K0.2Rh0.2/β-Mo2C exhibited up to 72.1% of ethanol selectivity at 150 °C. It was observed that the atomically dispersed Rh could form the bifunctional active centres with the active carrier β­Mo2C with the synergistic effects to achieve highly specific controlled C–C coupling. By promoting the CO2 adsorption and activation, the introduction of an alkali metal (K) mainly regulated the balanced performance of the two active centres, which in turn improved the hydrogenation selectivity. Overall, the controlled modification of β­Mo2C provides a new design strategy for the highly efficient, low-temperature hydrogenation of CO2 to ethanol with single-atom catalysts, which provides an excellent example for the rational design of the complex catalysts.

Alcohol consumption is a critical risk factor contributing to a verity of human diseases. The incidence of alcohol use disorder increases across adolescence in recent years. Accumulating line of evidence suggests that alcohol-induced changes of DNA cytosine methylation (5-methyl-2′-deoxycytidine, 5mC) in genomes play an important role in the development of diseases. However, systemic investigation of the effects of adolescent alcohol exposure on DNA and RNA modifications is still lacked. Especially, there hasn't been any report to study the effects of alcohol exposure on RNA modifications. Similar to DNA modifications, RNA modifications recently have been identified to function as new regulators in modulating numbers of biological processes. In the current study, we systematically investigated the effects of alcohol exposure on both DNA and RNA modifications in peripheral blood of adolescent rats by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) analysis. The developed LC-ESI-MS/MS method enabled the sensitive and accurate determination of 2 DNA modifications and 12 RNA modifications. As for the alcohol exposure experiments, the adolescent rats were intraperitoneally injected with ethanol with an interval of one day for a total 14 days. The quantification results by LC-ESI-MS/MS analysis showed that adolescent alcohol exposure could alter both DNA and RNA modifications in peripheral blood. Specifically, we observed an overall decreased trend of RNA modifications. The discovery of the significant alteration of the levels of DNA and RNA modifications under alcohol exposure indicates that alcohol consumption may increase the risk of the incidence and development of diseases through dysregulating DNA and RNA modifications.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabidiol (CBD) is a major cannabinoid extracted from Cannabis sativa with no abuse potential. Data from recent rodent studies suggest that amelioration of alcohol-motivated behaviors may be one of the numerous pharmacological effects of CBD. This study was designed to contribute to this research, assessing the effect of CBD on operant oral alcohol self-administration in selectively bred Sardinian alcohol-preferring (sP) rats, a validated animal model of excessive alcohol consumption. In addition, this study investigated the effect of CBD on operant self-administration of a highly palatable chocolate solution in Wistar rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male sP rats were trained to lever respond for alcohol (15% v/v) under the fixed ratio 4 (FR4) schedule of reinforcement. Once lever responding had stabilized, rats were exposed to test sessions under the FR4 and progressive ratio (PR) schedules of reinforcement. Test sessions were preceded by acute treatment with CBD (0, 6.25, 12.5, and 25 mg/kg or 0, 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg, i.p.; each dose range was tested in an independent experiment). Male Wistar rats were trained to lever respond for a chocolate solution (5% w/v chocolate powder) under the FR10 schedule of reinforcement. Once lever responding had stabilized, rats were exposed to test sessions under the same schedule. Test sessions were preceded by acute treatment with CBD (0, 6.25, 12.5, and 25 mg/kg or 0, 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg, i.p., in two independent experiments). RESULTS: Under the FR schedule, treatment with doses of CBD ≥12.5 mg/kg markedly reduced lever responding for alcohol and amount of self-administered alcohol. Under the PR schedule, treatment with CBD produced a slight tendency toward a decrease in lever responding and breakpoint for alcohol. Finally, no dose of CBD affected lever responding for the chocolate solution and amount of self-administered chocolate solution. DISCUSSION: These results extend previous data on CBD ability to affect alcohol-motivated behaviors to an animal model of genetically-determined proclivity to high alcohol consumption. Because of the predictive validity of sP rats, these results may be of relevance in view of possible future studies testing CBD in patients affected by alcohol use disorder.

Blighia sapida (B. sapida) K.D. Koenig (Family Sapindaceae) is a branchless straight bole approximately 15 m long. The study evaluated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of ethanol extract and fractions of B. sapida stem-bark using in vitro methods. Ethanol extract and its fractions were investigated for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and quantitative phenolic and flavonoid contents. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using albumin denaturation and membrane stabilization assays. The extract and its fractions exhibited radical scavenging and anti-inflammatory properties. The ethyl acetate fraction possessed maximum phenolic and flavonoid contents (136.67 ± 1.55 gallic acid mg/g and 75.76 ± 4.03 quercetin equivalent mg/g, respectively). Antioxidant studies revealed that the ethyl acetate fraction displayed superior activity with an IC50 = 0.09 ± 0.03 mg/mL DPPH, and values of 146.96 ± 3.81 and 359.20 ± 4.98 for FRAP and TAC respectively. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory activity was revealed by inhibition of heat-induced albumin denaturation and red blood cell membrane stabilization at concentrations of 200-1000 μg/mL and 50-250 μg/mL, respectively. The ethanol extract and fractions exhibited antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, with ethyl acetate fraction showing superior activity, which could be attributed to secondary metabolites, mainly phenolic compounds. Overall, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of B. sapida can be exploited by ethnomedicinal users.

Biodiesel can serve as an alternative to petroleum-based fuels. It has been shown that standard biodiesel cannot be mixed to improve efficiency and emissions characteristics. It has a major effect on emissions but has a limited capacity to mix with co-feed at varying temperatures and different ratios. In this study, 63 tertiary blends and three binary blends were mixed to create a stable fuel. Biodiesel was stable after having blended with amphipathioic liquor of a broad range of compatibility for a period of 168 h is recorded. Four samples were chosen for reproducibility, and 2 were selected for higher than average ethanol content in ethanol. These can be defined as one-observed, inferred, and derived in the three-layer, double-blurred, double-layer, two-blurred, one-blurred ring formation, and a single-blurred double-layer format. Even at 27.2 °C, biodiesel micelles could not shape micelles were used. The fuel blend, which has a wider range of miscibility, suitable for transportation and stability, causes more aromatic emissions when used in a ternary formulation than a micro formulation. The blend properties were found to be within tolerable limits.

Methanol adsorption and dehydration reactions within zeolites represent important steps in the catalytic conversion process to form long-chain hydrocarbons. Herein, first-principles density functional theory (DFT) is employed in the determination of methanol adsorption and conversion in ferrierite (FER), where we predict the fundamental adsorption geometries and energetics of methanol adsorption. The methanol molecule is shown to physisorb at all explored binding sites, stabilized through hydrogen-bonded interactions with the acid site atOmeth-Hframbond distances ranging from 1.33-1.51 A. We demonstrate that the zeolites' adsorption capability is affected by the silicon/aluminium ratio, with stronger adsorptions predicted in the material with silicon to aluminium fractions of 5 than 8. The adsorption strength is also found to vary depending on the tetrahedral binding site, with the T1O2 site yielding the most stable methanol adsorption structure in the Si/Al ratio = 5(Eads = -22.5 kcal mol-1), whereas the T1O1 site yields the most stable adsorption geometry (Eads = -19.2 kcal mol-1) in the Si/Al ratio = 8. Upon translational and rotational motion, methanol is protonated resulting in the breaking of its C-O bond to form a methoxy species bound to the framework oxygen (O-CH3 distance of 1.37 A), whereas the water molecule is stabilized at the acid site through H-bonding (Owat-H = 2.0 A). Further reaction between the methoxy species and a second methanol molecule results in the formation of ethanol and protonated dimethyl ether, with adsorption energies of -42 and -25 kcal mol-1, respectively. The results in this study provide atomistic insight into the effect of acidity of the FER zeolite on the adsorption and conversion of methanol. Droplets made of a water/ethanol mixture spontaneously self-propel in an oil/surfactant solution and, depending on the initial ethanol concentration at the time of production, may evolve in up to three stages. Upon self-propulsion the droplets absorb surfactant molecules during their continuous motion in the oily phase. In combination with the continuous loss of ethanol this mass exchange with the ambient phase may lead to a spontaneous phase separation of the water/ethanol mixture, and eventually to the formation of characteristic Janus droplets. Supported by experimental evidence, we propose a simple model that is able to explain the propulsion velocity and its scaling with the droplet radius in the last stage of the droplet evolution.

The species Eugenia involucrata DC. is a plant native to Brazil and is traditionally used for intestinal problems, however, little research has documented about its biological potential and phytochemical profile. Thus, the objective of this study was to carry out preliminary phytochemical prospecting, antimicrobial and antioxidant potential of E. involucrata extracts. Using the E. involucrata leaves, aqueous and organic extracts were obtained using the following solvents (ethanol, methanol, hexane, acetone, dichloromethane and ethyl acetate). The phytochemical prospecting detected the presence of saponins, steroids, flavonoids and tannins in the extracts. Ethanolic and methanolic extracts presented antimicrobial activity for most of the bacterial strains tested, as well as for yeast Candida albicans, with concentrations between 3.12 and 50 mg/mL. Rosa rugosa Thunb. is recognized as both medicine and edible in China. The article investigated the antitumor activity of rose flavonoids. Water-extracted rose flavonoids (RFW) and ethanol-extracted rose flavonoids (RFE) were achieved by extracting with distilled water and 70% ethanol, respectively. The effects of the two extracts on proliferation inhibition, apoptosis inducement and metastasis prevention of human HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines were tested, via optical/fluorescence microscopy, MTT detection, Transwell assay, flow cytometry and Western blot, etc. The results indicated that rose flavonoids at low concentration (10–40 μg/mL) had a better inhibitory effect on migration and invasion of HepG2 cells in a dose-dependent manner, while rose flavonoids at high concentration (80–160 μg/mL) could induce apoptosis of HepG2 cells by up-regulating the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins p53 and Bax, and down-regulating the expression of anti-apoptotic proteins Bcl-2, leading to the functioning of caspase-3 and caspase-9. The effect of RFE at the same concentration was significantly better than that of RFW. Conclusion, this study found that rose flavonoids had a certain inhibitory effect on proliferation and metastasis of human liver cancer cells HepG2, indicating the application of rose flavonoids in preventing and treating of liver cancer.

Aim This study aims to use fermentation waste of ethanol production (solid and liquid) for riboflavin and recycling of bacterial biomass as biofertilizers to enhance the growth of some oily crop plants. Methods and Results Out of 10 yeast isolates from fresh milk, Clavispora lusitaniae ASU 33 (MN583181) was able to ferment different concentrations of glucose (2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) into ethanol with high efficiency at 10%. Among seven non-Lactobacillus bacterial isolates recovered from cheese samples, two bacterial isolates Bacillus subtlis-SR2 (MT002768) and Novosphingobium panipatense-SR3 (MT002778) were selected for their high riboflavin production. Different media (control medium, fermentation waste medium and a mixture of the fermentation waste medium and control medium [1:1]) were used for riboflavin production. These media were inoculated by a single or mixture of B. subtlis-SR2, N. panipatense-SR3. The addition of the waste medium of ethanol production to the control medium (1:1) had a stimulatory effect on riboflavin production whether inoculated with either a single strain or a mixture of B. subtlis-SR2 and N. panipatense-SR3. A mixture of fermentation waste and control media inoculated with N. panipatense produced a high riboflavin yield in comparison with other media. Inoculation of Zea mays and Ocimum basilicum plants with either the bacterial biomass waste of riboflavin production (B. subtlis or N. panipatense) or a mixture of B. subtlis and N. panipatense) shows a stimulatory effect on the plant growth in comparison with control (uninoculated plants). Conclusions These results demonstrate the possibility of minimizing the cost of riboflavin and biofertilizer manufacturing via interlinking ethanol and riboflavin with the biofertilizer production technology. Significance and Impact of Study This study outlines the methods of evaluating the strength of spent media by applying procedures developed in the vitamin production industries. Furthermore, bacterial biomass waste can act as an environmentally friendly alternative for agrochemicals.

In male rats, physical contexts that are associated with alcohol can amplify the response to a discrete, alcohol-predictive conditioned stimulus (CS), and amplify prime-induced reinstatement. Here, we examined these effects as a function of biological sex. Male and female Long-Evans rats were acclimated to drinking ethanol (15% v/v) in their home cages. Next, they were trained to associate an auditory conditioned stimulus (CS) (10 s; white noise or clicker; 15 trials per session) with ethanol delivery (0.2 mL per CS; 3.0 mL per session) into a fluid port for oral intake. Training occurred in a distinctive context containing specific visual, olfactory, and tactile stimuli. During alternating sessions, rats were exposed to a second context wherein they did not receive ethanol. At test, CS trials occurred in both contexts without ethanol delivery. Rats then underwent extinction using repeated unreinforced presentations of the CS in both contexts. An alcohol-primed reinstatement test was then conducted, in which 0.2 mL of ethanol was presented at the start of the session and during the first CS trial, after which no ethanol was delivered for the remainder of the session. At both test and reinstatement, male rats made significantly more CS port-entries in the context associated with alcohol delivery than in the context in which alcohol was never experienced. Unlike males, female rats made a similar number of CS port-entries at the test in both the alcohol context and the neutral context. The reinstatement observed in female rats was also not affected by context. These findings suggest that the capacity of an alcohol-associated context to modulate responding to a discrete, alcohol-predictive cue is less pronounced in female than male rats.

Ethanol-type sludge fermentation has recently attracted much attention because it can enhance direct interspecies electron transfer and thus improve the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS). In this paper, the enhancement of short-term ethanol-type fermentation of WAS via adding Saccharomyces was investigated. The experimental results show that the maximum ethanol production of 1030.8 ± 20.6 mg/L was achieved, with the optimum fermentation conditions of a pH of 5.1, temperature of 26.0 ℃ and time of 8.0 hr. Although the content of volatile fatty acid (VFA) increased within 10 hr, it is one order of magnitude lower than the content of ethanol, indicating that the VFA generation did not affect the efficient production of ethanol. The analyses of changes in the microbial community during the fermentation process demonstrate that the greatest Saccharomyces activity occurred in the first 8 hr and it can play an important role in ethanol production even at a very low relative abundance. Meanwhile, most typical acid-producing bacteria were inhibited, but the hydrogenotrophic methanogens (i.e., Methanobacterium) were enriched to a certain extent. Further statistical analyses reveal that the Rhodobacter, Thermomonas, Terrimonas and Saccharomyces are responsible for ethanol production during the fermentation. However, these findings not only provide a reference for the development of enhancing ethanol-type fermentation of sludge, but also are expected to provide a new way of thinking for the efficient bioenergy and resource recovery from sludge.

Development of good support materials is widely adopted as a valid strategy to fabricate high performance electrocatalysts for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). In this study, the small diameter Ti3C2Tx MXene thin nanosheets inserted into three-dimensional nitrogen-doped grapheme (NG) was constructed via a facile hydrothermal method and employed as support materials for anchoring Pd nanocrystals (Pd/Ti3C2Tx@NG). The obtained-Pd/Ti3C2Tx@NG as EOR electrocatalyst in alkaline media outperforms the commercial Pd/C with better electrocatalytic activity, enhanced long-term stability and high CO tolerance. The Ti3C2Tx inserted into NG probably plays a key role for enhancing the properties of the synthesized-catalyst. Inserting Ti3C2Tx into NG allows the electrocatalysts to have high porosity, surface hydrophilicity, sufficient number of anchor sites for Pd nanocrystals and modifies its electronic properties, which can promote the electrocatalytic activity and durability. The enhanced EOR performance endows Pd/Ti3C2Tx@NG with great application potential in fuel cells as an anode catalyst. Furthermore, the prepared Ti3C2Tx@NG is also suitable in various desired applications, especially other oxidation reactions.

The experimental densities and viscosities are reported in this paper for the binary mixtures: water + methanol, water + ethanol and methanol + ethanol over the entire composition range at 293.15 K and atmospheric pressure. From these experimental data, the excess molar volumes, V E, and deviations in viscosity, Δη, were derived and fitted to the Redlich–Kister polynomial to determine the adjustable fitting parameters and standard deviations. The variation of excess and deviation properties with composition has been interpreted in terms of the molecular interactions between the components of the mixtures and structural effects. Additionally, various correlation models were applied to estimate the viscosities of the mixtures to test their validity for the mixtures being studied.

BACKGROUND: Research shows that surgery patients who have undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) are at increased risk for an alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, the mechanisms through which this increased risk is incurred are poorly understood. A host of variables have been proposed as potentially causal in developing AUDs, but empirical examination of many of these variables in human samples is lacking. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to examine the extent to which alcohol pharmacokinetics (PK), the rewarding effects of alcohol, and the relationship between these variables change from before to after weight loss surgery. SETTING: Large healthcare facility in the Midwest United States METHODS: Thirty-four participants completed assessments prior to, and one year after, RYGB. Ethanol has been demonstrated to exert profound effects upon cells and tissues via multiple mechanisms. One recently appreciated means by which cells can communicate with other cells is via the production and release of extracellular vesicles. Though smaller exosomes have been demonstrated to be released in response to ethanol exposure, the ability of ethanol to modulate the generation and release of larger microvesicle particles (MVP) is lesser studied. The present studies examined the ability of exogenous ethanol to generate MVP with a focus on skin cells. Acute ethanol exposure resulted in augmented MVP release in keratinocytes and in the skin and blood of mice. Unlike other stimuli such as ultraviolet B radiation or thermal burn injury, ethanol-mediated MVP release was independent of the Platelet-activating Factor receptor (PAFR). However, ethanol pretreatment was found to augment thermal burn injury-induced MVP in a PAFR-dependent manner. These studies provide a novel mechanism for ethanol-mediated effects, that could be relevant in the significant toxicity associated with thermal burn injury in the setting of alcohol intoxication.

Supersized alcopops are sugar-sweetened beverages with extraordinarily high alcohol content; consumption is highly prevalent among college students and is associated with a variety of negative alcohol-related consequences. However, few studies have examined risk factors for consumption of these products. The objective of this study was to examine, among a college student sample, whether the behavioral economic principle of alcohol demand was associated with self-reported lifetime consumption of Four Loko-the most popular brand of supersized alcopop among underage drinkers. Participants were 170 undergraduate students who were at least 18 years of age and reported at least 1 day of alcohol consumption within the past month. Study participants completed a self-administered questionnaire assessing demographics, Four Loko consumption and associated problems, and alcohol demand (using the Brief Assessment of Alcohol Demand). Hierarchical logistic regression analyses revealed that intensity (drinks they would consume if free) significantly predicted Four Loko consumption but not breakpoint (maximum expenditure per drink) or Omax (maximum expenditure for all drinks). Findings support that students who prefer consuming large quantities of alcohol when it is free are more likely to have consumed Four Loko. Interventions increasing price or reducing the availability of Four Loko may be especially protective for this at-risk population. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved).

Bronsted acid site (S/Cl)-functional carbon materials were prepared by ball-milling (bm) L-cysteine and ammonium chloride to form chemical complex solids, by post-heat treatment (Q) of the solids at 500 °C under a nitrogen gas atmosphere to stabilize and fortify amino and functional group solid structures and by post-oxidative treatment with H2O2 to add Bronsted acidity. The as-prepared carbon materials (S/Cl@bmxQy; x, y in hours) contained Bronsted acid sites (sulfonates, chlorides), oxygen-containing groups (-COOH, -OH) and amino functional groups. The S/Cl@bmxQy materials were applied as catalysts to promote conversion of fructose in ethanol solvent to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) and 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (5-EMF). Among the carbon materials, S/Cl@bm3Q1 gave 5-EMF and 5-HMF yields of 67.0% and 22.8%, respectively, in pure ethanol at 140 °C for 24 h reaction time, while a reaction time of 18 h gave total 5-EMF and 5-HMF yields of 96.4%. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was applied as additive to the ethanol-fructose- S/Cl@bm3Q1 reaction system which showed that 5-HMF product selectivity could be controlled with DMSO concentration. The protocol developed allows simple preparation of functional carbon materials that have high catalytic activity and are effective for conversion of fructose to 5-HMF and 5-EMF in ethanol.

In this study, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was synthesized by the continuous reaction of metallurgical silicon (MSi) with ethanol. The results obtained herein suggest that among all the alkali metal base catalysts, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether sodium (DEGEE-Na) is the best catalyst; this is because it does not require any extra diethylene glycol monoethyl ether (DEGEE-H) as excess DEGEE-H results in its decomposition products. It is present in a solid phase at room temperature; however, it changes into a liquid phase under the reaction conditions. In contrast, DEGEE-Li was not suitable for this reaction, whereas DEGEE-K required extra DEGEE-H as a solvent because of the solidification of the reaction mixture in the reaction with MSi. When the continuous reaction was carried out by feeding ethanol into a mixture of MSi and DEGEE-Na salt catalyst (1: 1 wt.% ratio) at 175 ℃, TEOS was obtained with a yield of 70.6%. In addition to TEOS, small amounts of byproducts, such as (2-ethoxyethoxy)triethoxysilane and hexaethoxydisiloxane were obtained and unreacted ethanol was recovered and recycled. For the preparation of TEOS, activation of MSi is an important step in the reaction with ethanol. We believe that this continuous process for preparing TEOS is more economically competitive and eco-friendly method.

Nonhuman primate models of alcohol use disorder (AUD) frequently utilize schedule-induced polydipsia to initiate ethanol drinking. Previous research has demonstrated that specific characteristics of drinking during the final phase of induction, in which monkeys consume 1.5 g/kg of ethanol per day, can predict whether monkeys become heavy or light drinkers when they subsequently have free access to ethanol (22 hours per day; Baker, Farro, Gonzales, Helms, & Grant, 2017; Grant et al., 2008). A monkey's position in the social dominance hierarchy is another factor associated with ethanol drinking in nonhuman primates; lower social status is associated with higher ethanol intakes. In the present study, characteristics of drinking during induction were measured in 12 male cynomolgus monkeys living in three established social groups (4 monkeys per group). All monkeys were induced to consume water, then increasing doses of ethanol (0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 g/kg) for 30 sessions per dose using a 300-s fixed-time schedule of food pellet delivery. Drinking sessions occurred five days per week and monkeys were group-housed on the other two days. Contrary to our hypothesis that subordinate monkeys would show characteristics of drinking during the last phase of induction that were predictive of later heavy drinking, no significant differences were observed between dominant and subordinate monkeys in any phase of induction. When ethanol availability was subsequently increased to 22 hours per day for 5 weeks, the intakes of subordinate- and dominant-ranked monkeys diverged, with higher intakes on average in subordinates. Several factors unique to the conditions of induction may have obscured any influence of social rank, including the limited duration of sessions and limited maximal ethanol intake. The data support the conclusion that the effects of social rank on ethanol consumption require unrestricted access to ethanol.

The study to determine the inhibition capability of robusta coffee's (Coffea canephora var. robusta) leaf extract against S. mutans growth. Robusta coffee's (Coffea canephora var. robusta) leaf extract was made by maceration method using 96% ethanol. The antibacterial examination using well diffusion on Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA) media. The concentration of robusta coffee's (Coffea canephora var. robusta) leaf extract used in this study was 25%, 50%, and 75%. The study was analyzed using the One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test and continued with the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test. The results showed a value of p0.05, which proves that robusta coffee's (Coffea canephora var. robusta) leaf extract has an antibacterial effect on the growth of S. mutans with low inhibition potency

The electrocatalytic ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) is a critical component for direct ethanol fuel cells, while its reactivity, stability, and selectivity toward C1 products are severely hindered by the poisoning effect of CO species on the surface of noble-metal catalysts. In this work, we developed a hybrid material of palladium nanoparticles and nickel single-atom catalyst (Pd NPs@Ni SAC) for efficient EOR. The Pd nanoparticles catalyzed the breaking of carbon-carbon bonds of ethanol, while the adsorbed CO intermediates were removed by the Ni single-atom catalyst. The Pd NPs@Ni SAC structure exhibited outstanding EOR performances, including a high mass activity, good selectivities of C1 products, and a high electrocatalytic stability. Our work suggests an attractive perspective of utilizing single-atom electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation.

BACKGROUND Benzodiazepines are the gold standard for alcohol withdrawal treatment but choice and dosing vary widely. In 2015, our institution implemented a Minnesota detoxification scale (MINDS) and single standardized high-dose diazepam based protocol for treatment of alcohol withdrawal to replace multiple Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol (CIWA) based protocols using lower dose benzodiazepines. OBJECTIVE We compared use of MINDS versus CIWA assessment protocols with high front loading diazepam treatment in care of patient experiencing alcohol withdrawal during hospitalization. METHODS Retrospective cohort study of hospitalized patients experiencing alcohol withdrawal to statistically analyze difference in outcomes between CIWA based lower benzodiazepine dose protocols used in 2013-2015 versus the MINDS based high-dose front-loading diazepam protocol used in 2015-2017. RESULTS Patients treated with MINDS based high dose diazepam protocol were less likely to have physical restraints used (AOR = 0.8, CI: 0.70 - 0.92), had a shorter hospital length of stay, and fewer days on benzodiazepines (p < 0.001). Patients were more likely to be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days (AOR = 1.13, CI: 1.03 - 1.26) in MINDS based diazepam treatment group. Total diazepam equivalent dosing was similar in both groups. Mortality rates and ICU use rates were similar between the groups. CONCLUSIONS Higher dose front loading long acting benzodiazepine can be safely used with beneficial outcomes in hospitalized alcohol withdrawal patients.

Pinosylvin stilbenes are phenolic compounds mainly occurring in the Pinaceae family. We previously reported that the accumulation of two pinosylvin stilbene compounds, dihydropinosylvin methyl ether (DPME) and pinosylvin monomethyl ether (PME), in Pinus strobus trees was highly enhanced by infection with pine wood nematodes (PWNs: Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), and these two compounds showed strong nematicidal activity against PWNs. In this work, we established a system of pinosylvin stilbene (DPME and PME) production via the in vitro culture of P. strobus calli, and we examined the nematicidal activity of callus extracts. Calli were induced from the culture of mature zygotic embryos of P. strobus. Optimized growth of calli was obtained in 1/2 Litvay medium with 1.0 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.5 mg/L BA. DPME and PME accumulation did not occur in nonaged (one-month-old) calli but increased greatly with prolonged callus culture. The concentrations of DPME and PME in three-month-old dark-brown calli were 6.4 mg/g DW and 0.28 mg/g DW, respectively. The effect of methyl jasmonate treatment on the accumulation of DPME and PME was evaluated in cell suspension culture of P. strobus. However, the treatment appeared to show slight increase of DPME accumulation compared to callus browning. A test solution prepared from crude ethanol extracts from aged calli (three months old) containing 120 µg/ml DPME and 5.16 µg/ml PME treated with PWNs resulted in 100% immobilization of the adult PWNs and 66.7% immobilization of the juvenile PWNs within 24 h. However, nonaged callus extracts did not show any nematicidal activity against juvenile PWNs and showed less than 20% nematicidal activity against adult PWNs. These results indicate that pinosylvin stilbenes can be effectively produced by prolonged culture of P. strobus calli, can be isolated using simple ethanolic extraction, and are applicable as beneficial eco-friendly compounds with nematicidal activity against PWNs.

A series of quinoxaline 1,4-di-N-oxide derivatives, which have been proven to be active cytotoxic agents under hypoxic conditionswere synthesized. Ethyl-3-hydroxyquinoxaline-2-carboxylate (1) on reaction with hydrazine hydrate in ethanol yielded 3-hydroxyquinoxaline-2-carbohydrazide(2). This product on condensation with different aromatic aldehydes yielded N-4-bromobenzylidine)-3-hydroxyquinoxaline-2-carbohydrazide(3) which upon reaction with mCPBA in THF resulted in the abovementionedproducts. These derivatives were evaluated for theiranti-bacterial activity using four different strains. A few compounds among them were also evaluated for their anti-tumour activity towards breast cancer (MCF7) and cervical cancer (HeLa) cell lines. Compound 4a showed moderate activity towards breast cancer cell lines (MCF7) and 4b towards cervical cancer cell lines (HeLa). All the compounds were characterized by IR, 1H NMR and Mass spectroscopy.

Agave bagasse (AG) is used as potential bioenergy feedstock due to its high biomass productivity, even in semiarid lands. In particular, Ionic liquid (IL) pretreatment using aprotic ILs (AILs) has been greatly reduce AG recalcitrance towards downstream processing by lowering lignin content and achieving high sugar yields. However, AILs low biocompatibility towards enzymes and bacteria combined with the high initial cost has limited further development of this technology. We have evaluated the pretreatment of AG with a biocompatible low-cost protic IL (PIL), 2-hydroxyethylammonium acetate ([2-HEA][OAc]), in a wash-free one-pot (OP) ethanol conversion process. Where PIL pretreatment was followed by enzymatic saccharification, then ethanol fermentation in a single vessel. The pretreatment conditions were optimized using a central composite design to enable high sugar conversion at low PIL content. Under optimized pretreatment conditions (160 °C, 60% IL loading and 1.5 h), a yield of 132 kg of ethanol per Ton of untreated biomass was obtained using high solids loading (30 % solids loading) under a PIL-OP scheme. High lignin removal (>50 %), low cellulose crystallinity, and high glucan conversion (>85%) were achieved with PIL-pretreated AG comparable to yields obtained in an AIL-AG pretreated sample using 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium acetate ([C2C1Im][OAc]). These results using [2-HEA][OAc] demonstrate the potential of AG as a bioenergy feedstock with improved total ethanol yields paving the way towards a more feasible IL-based biorefinery.

Red jasmine rice is recognized as a healthy food with high phenolic compounds. These compounds present antibacterial and anti-free radical properties. Moreover, colored rice exhibits a biological activity against anticancer. Objectives of this study are 1) exploring a biological screening and cell viability of 70% ethanol and aqueous extracts of red jasmine rice, 2) investigating cytotoxicity to fibroblast NIH3T3 (IC80) that is one hundred cells were found cell viability 80 cells. Red jasmine rice extracts were dried and transformed into a powder using the freeze-drying method. The extracts were treated with fibroblast NIH3T3 for MTT. The highest of IC50 of red jasmine rice extract to scavenge the DPPH and ABTS radicals was found in ethanol extract (53.20±7.37 and 64.17±5.76, respectively). The experiment showed that the ethanol and aqueous extract of red rice did not show cytotoxicity to fibroblast NIH3T3 (IC80). The extracts of red rice show the biological screening of anti-oxidation with total phenolic compounds and flavonoid contents. Moreover, it does not modify the physical properties of the cream formula. It can be concluded that the red rice extract is highly promising for the value addition.

Meeting the demand for novel alcoholic beverages implies seeking innocuous yeasts that generate ethanol abundantly and give good taste and fragrance to the final product. For the yeasts isolated to date, there are few reports on the kinetics and thermodynamics of ethanol production, despite the key role this compound plays in accelerating fermentation. The aim of the current contribution was to isolate yeast strains from sugarcane and soil, select the innocuous ones that best produce and tolerate ethanol while growing on malted barley as substrate, and then determine their kinetic/thermodynamic parameters by evaluating cell growth, ethanol production, and substrate consumption over time and at different temperatures (10-40 °C). Saccharomyces cerevisiae 8A and Pichia kudriavzevii 4A exhibited 9.55% v/v and 20% v/v tolerance to ethanol, respectively. P. kudriavzevii 4A was chosen for the kinetic/thermodynamic study, conducted under an oxygen-limited condition (as exists in fermentation). Yeast growth and substrate consumption were best predicted by the Gompertz model, and ethanol production by the Luedeking-Piret model. P. kudriavzevii 4A showed a great tolerance to ethanol and a high level of ethanol production at all temperatures tested. These properties are invaluable economically and technically in industrial fermentation for the elaboration of alcoholic beverages.

Nonaqueous amine-based system is an attractive solution to overcome high-energy-intensive CO2 capture process using the conventional aqueous amines. Advanced nonaqueous absorbent of 2-(butylamino)ethanol (BAE) with 2-butoxyethanol (2-BE) has been recently proposed for low-energy-consumption CO2 capture. In this work, Henry’s law constants of CO2 in the BAE/2-BE blend were obtained by N2O/CO2 analogy, and correlated in the temperature range of (283−333) K. Vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data for the BAE+CO2+2-BE system at 65.4% (mass) BAE were also determined in a stirred equilibrium cell at temperatures of (313−393) K and CO2 partial pressures up to 275 kPa. A single apparent equilibrium constant KCO2,app was proposed for this system and correlated as a function of temperature, carbonated degree of amine and CO2 loading. Solubility data were well represented by the modified Kent-Eisenberg model with an average absolute relative deviation (AARD) of 13%.

Spirulina has been highlighted for potential health benefits based on its therapeutic functions. In the present study, the physicochemical characteristics and effects of Spirulina on ARPE-19 and HaCaT cells were monitored after mass-production, compared with conventional product. Gene ontology (GO) was analyzed using systems biology network that accounted for the function of Spirulina in human health. Spirulina powder had a smooth surface with adsorbing particles and contained sodium, magnesium, and potassium. Spirulina powder extracts in 0.1 × PBS, 0.1 M HEPES, 0.1 M NaCl, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, and acetonitrile showed broad absorbance peaks at 300–450 and 500–700 nm. In ARPE-19 and HaCaT cells, Spirulina powder in PBS displayed proliferation at 0.1–20 mg/mL and 2 mg/mL, respectively. Cell viability levels of HaCaT cells were higher than 90% at 0.1–20 mg/mL. Despite cell susceptibility, phycocyanin, which is a component of Spirulina, helped maintain consistency of cell responses with Spirulina. Spirulina functions were explained by GO-terms, mainly binding, cellular process, and cell in the network, in terms of anti-oxidant activity. Mass-produced Spirulina powder can be developed as a high-value nutraceutical for therapeutic applications in clinics. This protocol can be extended to other materials for biomedical applications.

Conversion of methane into liquid alcohol such as ethanol at low temperature in a straight, selective and low energy consumption process remains a topic of intense scientific research but a great challenge. In this work, CuFe2O4/CNT composite is successfully synthesized via a facile co-reduction method and used as catalysts to selectively oxidize methane. At a low temperature of 150 °C, methane is directly converted to ethanol in a single process on the as-prepared CuFe2O4/CNT composite with high selectivity. A mechanism is also proposed for the significant methane selective oxidation performance of the CuFe2O4/CNT composite catalysts.

This research evaluates the potential of a native marine isolate, Chlorella S4, for bioethanol production using the Thermo-Tolerant (TT) strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Initially, an acid-thermal pretreatment with different concentrations of microalgal biomass (2, 4, and 6% (w/v)) and H2SO4 (1.5, 3, and 4.5% (v/v)) was investigated to improve the release of glucose (an important substrate of fermentation). The glucose concentration was enhanced 3.7 fold from 0.048 to 0.179% (w/v) using the maximum concentrations of biomass (6% (w/v)) and 3% (v/v) of H2SO4 at 121 °C for 20 min. The I-optimal type of mixture design was applied to select the best combination of two carbon sources (pure glucose and microalga hydrolysate) in the fermentation medium. In the optimum condition, the highest specific growth rate (μmax) of 0.282 h−1 was calculated for the yeast. Subsequently, a maximum ethanol concentration of 8.31 ± 0.18 g/L with a yield of about 0.4 g ethanol/g consumed carbohydrate (about 78.2% of the theoretical yield) was achieved after 48 h of fermentation. These findings indicate that feasible bioethanol production from Chlorella S4 hydrolysate may be applied industrially.

In this study, major factors involved in regulating ethanol production from wood by the saprotrophic white-rot fungus Phanerochaete sordida YK-624 were investigated. P. sordida YK-624 produced ethanol from wood meal culture without the addition of any nutrients, and ethanol was produced from wood culture only when the oxygen concentration in headspace was reduced to ≤5%; thereafter, ethanol production ceased within a few days. Analyses of gene expression during aerobic incubation indicated that P. sordida simultaneously upregulates the glycolytic pathway from sugar uptake to pyruvate conversion during ethanol fermentation and suppresses pyruvate influx into the TCA cycle. Upon termination of ethanol fermentation, the expression of all tested genes was repressed, and the fungus ceased to grow. In contrast, the fungus could utilize ethanol for aerobic growth. These results suggest that ethanol fermentation by P. sordida functions as a short-term stress response system under anaerobic conditions during wood decay, enabling the fungus to rapidly resume growing when oxygen is supplied (e.g., following breakdown of plant cell walls or removal of the fungus from water immersion). This is the first report to describe the physiologic significance of ethanol fermentation in saprotrophic white-rot fungi.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of low concentration ethanol in increasing flap viability by perioperative perivascular application and compared it with that of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A).Twenty-seven Wistar albino rats weighing 300-350 g were used in this study. The subjects were randomly divided into three equal groups: group E (ethanol, n = 9), group B (BTX-A, n = 9), and group S (saline, n = 9). In rats, the dorsal multi-territory perforator flap was elevated, and the agents were injected. In postoperative 1 wk, flap viability and vascular endothelial growth factor levels were evaluated. Also, blood flow, microvascular density, and inflammation degree of both choke zones were assessed.The mean flap survival area and vascular endothelial growth factor level were significantly higher in group E than in group B and S (P0.001). Similarly, blood flow (first choke zone, P0.012, and second choke zone, P0.001) and microvascular density (first choke zone and second choke zone, P0.001) were found to be higher in Group E compared to Group B and S in the evaluation performed from both choke zones. Also, significant inflammation was detected in the ethanol group.The positive effects of BTX-A on flap viability were achieved with a low concentration of ethanol. The fact that a low concentration of ethanol increases blood flow, angiogenesis, and flap viability more than BTX-A in the first postoperative week indicates that it can be an alternative agent for perioperative use.

The authors sought to estimate the prevalence of past-12-month and lifetime cannabis use and cannabis use disorder among U.S. veterans; to describe demographic, substance use disorder, and psychiatric disorder correlates of nonmedical cannabis use and cannabis use disorder; and to explore differences in cannabis use and cannabis use disorder prevalence among veterans in states with and without medical marijuana laws.Participants were 3,119 respondents in the 2012-2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III) who identified as U.S. veterans. Weighted prevalences were calculated. Logistic regression analyses tested associations of nonmedical cannabis use and cannabis use disorder with demographic and clinical correlates and examined whether prevalence differed by state legalization status.The prevalences of any past-12-month cannabis use and cannabis use disorder were 7.3% and 1.8%, respectively. Lifetime prevalences were 32.5% and 5.7%, respectively. Past-12-month and lifetime cannabis use disorder prevalence estimates among nonmedical cannabis users were 24.4% and 17.4%, respectively. Sociodemographic correlates of nonmedical cannabis use and use disorder included younger age, male gender, being unmarried, lower income, and residing in a state with medical marijuana laws. Nonmedical cannabis use and use disorder were associated with most psychiatric and substance use disorders examined.Among veterans, the odds of nonmedical cannabis use and use disorder were elevated among vulnerable subgroups, including those with lower income or psychiatric disorders and among survey participants residing in states with medical marijuana laws. The study findings highlight the need for clinical attention (e.g., screening, assessment) and ongoing monitoring among veterans in the context of increasing legalization of cannabis.

Novel HPLC method was developed for enantioresolution of tyrosine kinase inhibitor drug Ibrutinib (IBT). Separation and identification of IBT enantiomers was investigated using cellulose tris (3,5-dichlorophenylcarbamate) immobilized on silica gel (Chiral-pack-IC). Good baseline enantioseparation was achieved on Chiral-pack-IC under normal-phase condition composed of n-Hexane, ethanol in a ratio of 55 and 45 (%v/v) with 0.1% Diethyl amine and 0.3% Trifluoro acetic acid. Resolution between IBT and its enantiomer was above 4. The flow rate and column oven temperature were 0.9 mL/min and 30 °C respectively. Detection was carried out at 260 nm. Injection volume optimized was 10 µL. Developed method was validated in accordance with ICH guide lines for specificity, limit of detection, limit of quantification, linearity, accuracy, precision, ruggedness and robustness.

We wished to prepare detoxified rapeseed protein isolate (RPI) by phytase/ethanol treatment based on alkaline extraction and acidic precipitation. Contents of protein, fat, ash, moisture, crude fiber, glucosinolates, phytic acid, phenolics and color were determined. To evaluate the safety of detoxified RPI, five groups of C57 mice (detoxified RPI [10 and 20 g/kg]; commercial soybean protein isolate (SPI) [10 g/kg]; non-detoxified RPI [10 g/kg]; control) were used in the acute-toxicity test. Bodyweight and pathology parameters were recorded at different time points, followed by macroscopic examination, organ-weight measurement and microstructure examination. After pretreatment of rapeseed meals with phytase (enzyme:substrate ratio, 1:5 mg/g) for 1.5 h and two-time ethanol extraction for precipitated protein, the chemical characteristics in RPI were protein (88.26%), fat (0.57%), ash (2.72%), moisture (1.90%), crude fiber (0.77%), glucosinolates (0 μmol/g), phytic acid (0.17%), phenolics (0.36%) and whiteness (73.38). Treatment resulted in significant removal of anti-nutritional factors (ANFs) and increased whiteness from detoxified RPI compared with that from non-detoxified RPI, and lower than that of cruciferin-rich canola protein isolate (Puratein®). Experimental-related effects on bodyweight, clinical observations, or clinicopathology, in mice treated with detoxified RPI were not observed except for a decreased Thyroid Gland/Parathyroid Gland Index in mice treated with non-detoxified RPI. Furthermore, the no-observed-effect level (NOEL) was 10g/kg of detoxicating RPI, whereas the no-observed-adverse-effect-level was (NOAEL) the highest fed level of 20g/kg of detoxicating RPI. Overall, the detoxified RPI prepared by combined treatment of phytase and ethanol was considered safe under the conditions tested, in which the contents of the main ANFs were reduced significantly.
