Three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based aerogels have promising applications in oil adsorption and environmental restoration. However, current research of graphene-based aerogels is often hindered by high preparation cost, poor mechanical properties and low recycling efficiency. Here, super-elastic graphene aerogel (SGA) was prepared through one-step freezing and twice hydrothermal reduction followed by drying under ambient pressure. The simple atmospheric drying provides a possibility for large-scale preparation of high performance graphene-based aerogels. The prepared SGA not only has the ability of highly repeatable compression rebound, but also exhibits excellent oil adsorption performance. And the overall performance of SGA is better than most of graphene-based aerogels prepared by freeze drying. After the SGA was cyclically compressed with 70% strain for 300 times, it can return to the original shape and height substantially. SGA retained about 90% of the initial adsorption capacity after 50 cycles of adsorption and compression regeneration for cyclohexane.

Perovskite-type oxides are considered as promising alternatives to the scarce and expensive precious metal-based electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here, we report a Bi0.15Sr0.85Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (BiSCF) perovskite prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method as a novel bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst in alkaline media. BiSCF shows excellent electrocatalytic activities towards both OER and ORR with a low OER overpotential ( η OER @ 10 mA c m − 2 = 354 mV), good chemical reaction kinetics (Tafel slope = 94.21 mV dec−1 and 72.8 mV dec−1 for OER and ORR, respectively), and excellent durability (i.e., η OER @ 10 mA c m − 2 increases from 354 mV to 404 mV within 24 h; better durability than the commercial 30 wt.% Pt/C at 0.4 V vs RHE regarding ORR). It also presents the best bifunctional property among the reported perovskites. The excellent electrocatalytic properties of BiSCF can be attributed to its abundant oxygen vacancies and rich oxidation states of Co and Fe. With high activities, excellent stability and easy fabrication, BiSCF is expected to be a promising bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst for renewable energy conversion and storage devices.

The preparation of intelligent-responsive materials with controllable topology structure has long been a significant objective for chemists in the field of materials science. In this paper, we designed and prepared a linear-cyclic reversible topological structure polymer based on the bistable [1]rotaxane molecular shuttle. A ferrocene-functionalized [1]rotaxane and naphthalimide fluorophore group are introduced into the both ends of the polymer, which exhibit distance-induced photo-electron transfer effect. The structural transformation between linear and cyclic state of polymer is demonstrated by simple acid-base stimuli, accompanying visual fluorescence changes. The transformation process was characterized by 1H NMR spectra and fluorescence spectra. This work provides a novel strategy to construct functionalized polymers with topological structure.

We demonstrate here a novel method for the design of liquid crystals (LCs) via the cyclization of mesogens by flexible chains. For two azobenzene-4,4’-dicarboxylate derivatives, the cyclic dimer, cyclic bis(tetraethylene glycol azobenzene-4,4′-dicarboxylate) (CBTAD), shows LC properties with smectic A phase, while its linear counterpart, bis(2-(2’-hydroxyethyloxy)ethyl azobenzene-4,4′-dicarboxylate (BHAD), has no LC phase. The difference is ascribed to the shackling effect from the cyclic topology, which leads to the much smaller entropy change during phase transitions and increases the isotropic temperature greatly for cyclics. In addition, the trans-to-cis isomerization of azobenzene groups under UV-light is also limited in CBTAD. With the reversible isomerization of azobenzene groups, CBTAD showed interesting isothermal phase transition behaviors, where the LC phase disappeared upon photoirradiation of 365 nm UV-light, and recovered when the UV-light was off. Combined with the smectic LC nature, a novel UV-light tuned visible light regulator was designed, by simply placing CBTAD in two glass plates. The scattered phase of smectic LC was utilized as the “OFF” state for light passage, while the UV-light induced isotropic phase was utilized as the “ON” state. The shackling effect outlined here should be applicable for the design of cyclic LC oligomers/polymers with special properties.

More stringent environmental legislation imposes severe requirements to reduce the sulfur content in diesel to ultra-low levels with high efficient catalysts. In this paper, a series of CoMo/NDC@alumina catalysts were synthesized by combination of the chemical vapor deposition of nitrogen-doped carbon (NDC) using 1,10-phenanthroline and co-impregnation of Mo and Co active components. The optimal catalyst with additive of 25% 1,10-phenanthroline was screened by a series of property characterization and the hydrodesulfrization (HDS) active test. The amount of “CoMoS” active phase of the optimal CoMo/C3 catalyst increased 5.3% as compared with the CoMo/γ-Al2O3. The introduction of NDC improved the sulfidation degree of Mo by 21.8% as compared to the CoMo/γ-Al2O3 catalyst, which was beneficial to form more active sites. The HDS conversion of the NDC supported catalysts are higher than CoMo/γ-Al2O3 whether for the dibenzothiophene (DBT) or 4,6-dimethyl dibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT). Further hydroprocessing evaluation with Dagang diesel revealed that the CoMo/C3 catalyst possessed higher HDS property and the removal rate of DBTs in the diesel increased by 4-11% as compared to the CoMo/γ-Al2O3 catalyst.

This article presents a thermal control design method for a surface acoustic wave (SAW) device. We designed a heat-dissipation structure and packaging scheme to solve three key issues observed in SAW devices using anisotropic crystals as piezoelectric substrates in acoustofluidics (e.g., lithium niobate): SAW chip cracking caused by thermal stress, SAW chip cracking caused by mismatched thermal expansion coefficients of the packaging materials, and enhancement of the structural strength and stability of the SAW chip. This study establishes the physical model of the designed structure and the relationship between the steady-state working temperature and the physical properties of the material. By comparing these physical properties and numerical calculations, we identified nanosilver adhesive as the most effective bonding material between the SAW chip and the heat sink. In addition to designing and fabricating, we also evaluated our SAW devices experimentally. The results not only confirmed that the abovementioned three key problems were solved but also demonstrated the significant enhancement of the stability of the SAW device.

Surface oxygen vacancy defects of mesoporous CeO2 nanosheets assembled microspheres (D-CeO2) are engineered by polymer precipitation, hydrothermal and surface hydrogenation strategies. The resultant D-CeO2 with a main pore diameter of 9.3 nm has a large specific surface area (~102.3 m2/g) and high thermal stability. The mesoporous nanosheets assembled microsphere structure prevents the nanosheets from aggregation, which is beneficial to effective mass transfer and shortens the migration distance of charge carriers. After surface hydrogenation, the photoresponse extends to long wavelength region, combing with the band gap from 2.63 eV reduced to 2.39 eV. Under AM 1.5 G radiation, the photocatalytic degradation rate of tetracycline (TC) can be up to 99.99%, which is three times as high as that of pristine CeO2 microspheres. The excellent solar-driven photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the efficient surface oxygen vacancy engineering and the mesoporous nanosheets assembled microsphere structure, which narrows the band gap, shortens the migration distance of carriers, promotes the spatial separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and favors mass transfer. The strategy provides new insights for fabricating other high-efficient oxide photocatalysts .

Although 1,10-phenanthroline-based ligands have recently shown vast opportunities for the separation of trivalent actinides (Ans(III)) from lanthanides (Lns(III)), the optimization and design of the extractant structure based on the phenanthroline framework remain hotspots for further improving the separation. Following the strategy of hard and soft donor atom combination, for the first time, the quinoline group was attached to the 1,10-phenanthroline skeleton, giving a lipophilic ligand, 2,9-diacyl-bis((3,4-dihydroquinoline-1((2H)-yl)-1),10-phenanthroline (QL-DAPhen)), for Am(III)/Eu(III) separation. In the presence of sodium nitrate, the ligand can effectively extract Am(III) over Eu(III) in HNO3 solution, with the separation factor (SFAm/Eu) ranging from 29 to 44. The coordination chemistry of Eu(III) with QL-DAPhen was investigated by slope analysis, NMR titration, UV-vis titration, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, and theoretical calculations. The experimental results unanimously confirm that the ligand forms both 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with Eu(III), and the stability constants (log β) of each of the two complexes were obtained. Density functional theory calculations show that the Am-N bonds have more covalent characteristics than the Eu-N bonds in the complexes, which reveals the reason why the ligand preferentially bonds with Am(III). Meanwhile, the thermodynamic analysis reveals that the 1:1 complex is more thermodynamically stable than the 1:2 complex. The findings of this work have laid a solid theoretical foundation for the application of phenanthroline-based ligands in the separation of An(III) from practical systems.

Complement receptor 3 (CD11b/CD18) is an important receptor that mediates adhesion, phagocytosis and chemotaxis in various immunocytes. The conidia of the medically-important pathogenic fungus, Aspergillus fumigatus can be internalized into alveolar epithelial cells to disseminate its infection in immunocompromised host; however, the role of CR3 in this process is poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated the potential role of CR3 on A. fumigatus internalization into type II alveolar epithelial cells and its effect on host intracellular PA content induced by A. fumigatus. We found that CR3 is expressed in alveolar epithelial cells and that human serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) could improve A. fumigatus conidial internalization into A549 type II alveolar epithelial cell line and mouse primary alveolar epithelial cells, which were significantly inhibited by the complement C3 quencher and CD11b-blocking antibody. Serum-opsonization of swollen conidia, but not resting conidia led to the increase of cellular phosphatidic acid (PA) in A549 cells during infection. Moreover, both conidial internalization and induced PA production were interfered by CD11b-blocking antibody and dependent on FAK activity, but not Syk in alveolar epithelial cells. Overall, our results revealed that CR3 is a critical modulator of Aspergillus fumigatus internalization into alveolar epithelial cells.

Ginsenoside compound K (CK) is the major intestinal bacterial metabolite of ginsenosides that exhibits anticancer potential in various cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. The anticancer types, mechanisms, and effects of CK in the past decade have been summarized in this review. Briefly, CK exerts anticancer effects via multiple molecular mechanisms, including the inhibition of proliferation, invasion, and migration, the induction of apoptosis and autophagy, and anti-angiogenesis. Some signaling pathways play a significant role in related processes, such as PI3K/Akt/mTOR, JNK/MAPK pathway, and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, the effects of CK combined with nanocarriers for anticancer efficiency are discussed in this review. Furthermore, we aimed to review the research progress of CK against cancer in the past decade, which might provide theoretical support and effective reference for further research on the medicinal value of small molecules, such as CK.

Poly(aryl sulfone) as a typical membrane material has been widely used due to excellent mechanical, chemical and thermal stability. However, the inherent hydrophobicity of poly(aryl sulfone) based membranes bears with the fouling issue during applications, which makes the membrane tending to adsorb contaminants on the surface so as to result in decreased separation performance and lifetime. In this critical review, we give a comprehensive overview on characterizations of hydrophilic membrane and diverse hydrophilic modification approaches of poly(aryl sulfone) membranes, predominantly including bulky, blending and surface modification technology. The discussions on the different modification methods have been provided in-depth. Besides, focusing on modification methods and performance of modified membranes, the related mechanisms for the performance enhancement are discussed too. At last, the perspectives are provided to guide the future directions to develop novel technology to manipulate the hydrophilicity of poly(aryl sulfone) membranes toward diverse practical and multifunctional applications.

[Image: see text] Influenza is a major threat to millions of people worldwide. Entry inhibitors are of particular interest for the development of novel therapeutic strategies for influenza. We have previously discovered oleanolic acid (OA) to be a mild influenza hemagglutinin (HA) inhibitor. In this work, inspired by the 3D structure of HA as a homotrimeric receptor, we designed and synthesized 15 OA trimers with different linkers and central region via the copper-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition reaction. All of the OA trimers were evaluated for their antiviral activities in vitro, and 12c, 12e, 13c, and 13d were observed to exhibit robust potency (IC(50) in the submicromolar range) against influenza A/WSN/33 (H1N1) virus that was stronger than that observed with oseltamivir. In addition, these compounds also displayed strong biological activity against A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 and B/Sichuan/531/2018 (BV). The results of hemagglutination inhibition assays and surface plasmon resonance binding assays suggest that these OA trimers may interrupt the interaction between the HA protein of influenza virus and the host cell sialic acid receptor, thus blocking viral entry. These findings highlight the utility of multivalent OA conjugates to enhance the ligand–target interactions in anti-influenza virus drug design and are also helpful for studying antiviral drugs derived from natural products.

Previous research has investigated whether hyperuricemia serves as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular and renal diseases. Hyperuricemia is defined as an abnormally high level of uric acid (UA; i.e., serum urate level > 6.8 mg/dL). Hyperuricemia has been considered a complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, it seems to play a pathogenic role in the progression of renal diseases. There has been increasing focus on the link between hyperuricemia and CKD. The results of randomized controlled trials have implied independent associations between hyperuricemia and the progression of cardiovascular and renal morbidities. These associations may be mediated by renin-angiotensin system activation, nitric oxide synthase inhibition, and macrovascular/microvascular disease development. There remains controversy regarding the use of serum UA level as an indirect index of renal vascular disease. This literature review focuses on the role of asymptomatic hyperuricemia in the progression of CKD, as well as the association between hyperuricemia and cardiovascular disease. It also provides a general overview of the physiological metabolism of UA.

A cost-effective totem-pole power factor correction converter with high-frequency gallium nitride high electron-mobility transistors and low-frequency Si diodes is investigated in this article. The reverse recovery characteristics of low-frequency diodes are evaluated experimentally. With the slow recovery characteristics, a negative current can flow through the low frequency diode, so that soft-switching and critical mode operation is achieved easily. However, if the duration of the negative current exceeds the reverse recovery time of the low-frequency diode, the diode will switch at high frequency, leading to severe losses and losing control of the inductor current. In order to avoid this issue, an adaptive off-time soft-switching strategy is adopted, and discontinuous conduction mode operation is suggested near the zero crossing of the grid voltage. Furthermore, since only the low-frequency grid current is sampled, this control strategy has the merits of low requirements on control resources and low cost. Experimental results of a 400W prototype are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Silicon nitride (SiN) waveguides with ultra-low optical loss enable integrated photonic applications including low noise, narrow linewidth lasers, chip-scale nonlinear photonics, and microwave photonics. Lasers are key components to SiN photonic integrated circuits (PICs), but are difficult to fully integrate with low-index SiN waveguides due to their large mismatch with the high-index III-V gain materials. The recent demonstration of multilayer heterogeneous integration provides a practical solution and enabled the first-generation of lasers fully integrated with SiN waveguides. However, a laser with high device yield and high output power at telecommunication wavelengths, where photonics applications are clustered, is still missing, hindered by large mode transition loss, non-optimized cavity design, and a complicated fabrication process. Here, we report high-performance lasers on SiN with tens of milliwatts output power through the SiN waveguide and sub-kHz fundamental linewidth, addressing all the aforementioned issues. We also show Hertz-level fundamental linewidth lasers are achievable with the developed integration techniques. These lasers, together with high-Q SiN resonators, mark a milestone towards a fully integrated low-noise silicon nitride photonics platform. This laser should find potential applications in LIDAR, microwave photonics and coherent optical communications., Achieving high output power and low noise integrated lasers is a major challenge. Here the authors experimentally demonstrate integrated lasers from a Si/SiN heterogeneous platform that shows Hertz-level linewidth, paving the way toward fully integrating low-noise silicon nitride photonics in volume using real devices for lasing.

We have previously shown that exposure to TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) reduces the resistance of HeLa cells to bacterial infection. Here we demonstrate that the increased infectivity is associated with enhanced asymmetry in the cholesterol distribution. We applied a live cell imaging method which uses tunable orthogonal cholesterol sensors to visualize and quantify in-situ cholesterol distribution between the two leaflets of the plasma membrane (PM). In the control culture, we found marked transbilayer asymmetry of cholesterol, with the concentration in the outer plasma membrane (OPM) being 13 ± 2-fold higher than that in the inner plasma membrane (IPM). Exposure of the culture to 0.1 mg/mL of rutile TiO2 NPs increased the asymmetry such that the concentration in the OPM was 51 ± 10 times higher, while the total cholesterol content increased only 21 ± 2%. This change in cholesterol gradient may explain the increase in bacterial infectivity in HeLa cells exposed to TiO2 NPs since many pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus used in the present study, require cholesterol for proper membrane attachment and virulence. RT-PCR indicated that exposure to TiO2 was responsible for upregulation of the ABCA1 and ABCG1 mRNAs, which are responsible for the production of the cholesterol transporter proteins that facilitate cholesterol transport across cellular membranes. This was confirmed by the observation of an overall decrease in bacterial infection in ABCA1 knockout or methyl-β-cyclodextrin-treated HeLa cells, as regardless of TiO2 NP exposure. Hence rather than preventing bacterial infection, TiO2 nanoparticles upregulate genes associated with membrane cholesterol production and distribution, hence increasing infectivity. Statement of significance A great deal of work has been done regarding the toxicology of the particles, especially focusing on detrimental outcomes associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. In this paper we show unambiguously a very surprising result, namely the ability of these particles to enhance bacterial infection even at very small exposure levels, where none of the deleterious effects of ROS products can yet be detected. Using a new imaging technique, we are able to demonstrate, in operando, the effect of the particles on cholesterol generation and distribution in live HeLa cells. This paper also represents the first in a series where we explore other consequences of increased membrane cholesterol, due to particle exposure, which are known to have multiple other consequences on human tissue function and development.

Auxin/indoleacetic acid (Aux/IAA) family genes respond to the hormone auxin, which have been implicated in the regulation of multiple biological processes. In this study, all 25 Aux/IAA family genes were identified in Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum) by a reiterative database search and manual annotation. Our study provided comprehensive information of Aux/IAA family genes in buckwheat, including gene structures, chromosome locations, phylogenetic relationships, and expression patterns. Aux/IAA family genes were nonuniformly distributed in the buckwheat chromosomes and divided into seven groups by phylogenetic analysis. Aux/IAA family genes maintained a certain correlation and a certain species-specificity through evolutionary analysis with Arabidopsis and other grain crops. In addition, all Aux/IAA genes showed a complex response pattern under treatment of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). These results provide valuable reference information for dissecting function and molecular mechanism of Aux/IAA family genes in buckwheat.

In the field of heterogeneous catalysis, limitations of the surface reaction process inevitably make improving the catalytic efficiency to remove pollutants in water a major challenge. Here, we report a unique structure of Fe surface-gradient-doped CuO that improves the overall catalytic processes of adsorption, electron transfer, and desorption. Interestingly, gradient doping leads to an imbalanced charge distribution in the crystal structure, thereby promoting the adsorption and electron transport efficiency of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The orbital hybridization of Fe also improves the electronic activity. More importantly, the occupied d-orbital distribution is closer to the lower energy level, which improves the desorption of the reaction intermediate (1O2). As a result, the production and desorption of 1O2 have been improved, resulting in excellent BPA degradation ability (kinetic rate increased by 67.3 times). Two-dimensional infrared correlation spectroscopy is used to better understand the doping process and catalytic mechanism of Fe-CuO. Fe-O changes before Cu-O and is more active. The Fe-required active sites, active species intensity, and kinetic reaction rates show a good correlation. This research provides a scientific basis for expanding the purification of toxic organic pollutants in complex water environments by heterogeneous catalytic oxidation.

The hydrosilylation reaction is one of the largest‐scale applications of homogeneous catalysis, and Pt homogeneous catalysts have been widely used in this reaction for the commercial manufacture of silicon products. However, homogeneous Pt catalysts result in considerable problems, such as undesired side reactions, unacceptable catalyst residues and disposable platinum consumption. Here, we synthesized electron‐deficient Pt single atoms supported on humic matter (Pt1@AHA_U_400), and the catalyst was used in hydrosilylation reactions, which showed super activity (turnover frequency as high as 3.0×107 h−1) and selectivity (>99 %). Density functional theory calculations reveal that the high performance of the catalyst results from the atomic dispersion of Pt and the electron deficiency of the Pt1 atoms, which is different from conventional Pt nanoscale catalysts. Excellent performance is maintained during recycle experiments, indicating the high stability of the catalyst., A humic‐acid‐based carbonaceous support material AHA_U_400 was prepared through mild thermal condensation and cross‐linking between artificial humic acid and urea, and the material proved to enable the preparation of the stable Pt single‐atom catalyst (Pt1@AHA_U_400). Pt was coordinated to two unsaturated O atoms, as well as one Cl− and one HCl moiety.

Anthracite, a high-rank coal, is an important fossil energy and resource, widely used in combustion and gasification. To improve the utilization efficiency of anthracite, it is important to study its structures. In our previous work, we found that the alkali-oxygen oxidation of anthracite could yield benzene carboxylic acids (BCAs). However, none of the existing structural models of anthracite captures the yield distribution of BCAs. In this work, we studied the structures of Hebi anthracite based on its BCAs combined with multi analysis techniques and proposed a structural model of the coal. We first oxidized the coal to yield BCAs, whose parent structure distributions we then investigated. Then, based the results of ultimate analysis and 13C NMR, we obtained the structural parameters. We then proposed corresponding aromatic clusters based on the parent structures of BCAs. Lastly, we constructed a structural model of the coal based on the analyses of ultimate analysis, 13C NMR, XPS and the contents of carboxyl and phenolic hydroxyl groups. The model has a molecular formula of C1966H882N22O76S3 and a molecular weight of 26094 amu. The model not only reflects the characteristics of anthracite intuitively, but also agrees with the results of BCAs, elemental analysis, carboxyl and phenolic hydroxyl group analyses, XPS analysis, and 13C NMR analysis. The work provides new insights in the structural characteristics of anthracite.

We report an amphiphilic block copolymer via poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether-Dlabile-poly(caprolactone)-ferrocene (mPEG-Dlabile-PCL-Fc) to deliver anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX). Lipase Novozyme-435 was used as a catalyst for ring-opening polymerization with e-caprolactone, and an acid-sensitive Schiff base was used to connect the hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts; the ferrocene provided ferrous ions and was introduced at the end of the amphiphilic copolymer. The resulting copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR/13C NMR and could be self-assembled in an aqueous solution to form nanomicelles with PCL-Fc as a hydrophobic core and mPEG as a hydrophilic shell. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the micelles were spherical and nanosized before and after DOX loading. The blank micelles also showed good biocompatibility. The drug-loaded polymeric nanomicelles exhibited a positive anticancer effect relative to the copolymers without ferrocene; the therapeutic effect of drug-loaded micelles containing ferrocene was more obvious. In vitro drug release results also showed that the polymer had a good pH response. Confocal microscopy also showed that polymeric micelles can effectively deliver and release the drug; the polymer containing ferrocene also leads to significantly improved ROS levels in tumor cells. Ferrocene can effectively and synergistically inhibit tumor cells with DOX.

Background Pancreatic cancer is a highly malignant tumor of the gastrointestinal system whose emerging resistance to chemotherapy has necessitated the development of novel antitumor treatments. Scoparone, a traditional Chinese medicine monomer with a wide range of pharmacological properties, has attracted considerable attention for its antitumor activity. Aim To explore the potential antitumor effect of scoparone on pancreatic cancer and the possible molecular mechanism of action. Methods The target genes of scoparone were determined using both the bioinformatics and multiplatform analyses. The effect of scoparone on pancreatic cancer cell proliferation, migration, invasion, cell cycle, and apoptosis was detected in vitro. The expression of hub genes was tested using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and the molecular mechanism was analyzed using Western blot. The in vivo effect of scoparone on pancreatic cancer cell proliferation was detected using a xenograft tumor model in nude mice as well as immunohistochemistry. Results The hub genes involved in the suppression of pancreatic cancer by scoparone were obtained by network bioinformatics analyses using publicly available databases and platforms, including SwissTargetPrediction, STITCH, GeneCards, CTD, STRING, WebGestalt, Cytoscape, and Gepia; AKT1 was confirmed using qRT-PCR to be the hub gene. Cell Counting Kit-8 assay revealed that the viability of Capan-2 and SW1990 cells was significantly reduced by scoparone treatment exhibiting IC50 values of 225.2 μmol/L and 209.1 μmol/L, respectively. Wound healing and transwell assays showed that scoparone inhibited the migration and invasion of pancreatic cancer cells. Additionally, flow cytometry confirmed that scoparone caused cell cycle arrest and induced apoptosis. Scoparone also increased the expression levels of Bax and cleaved caspase-3, decreased the levels of MMP9 and Bcl-2, and suppressed the phosphorylation of Akt without affecting total PI3K and Akt. Moreover, compared with the control group, xenograft tumors, in the 200 μmol/L scoparone treatment group, were smaller in volume and lighter in weight, and the percentages of Ki65- and PCNA-positive cells were decreased. Conclusion Our findings indicate that scoparone inhibits pancreatic cancer cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo, inhibits migration and invasion, and induces cycle arrest and apoptosis in vitro through the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.

A novel expansin-like protein (CxEXL22) has been identified and characterized from newly isolated Arthrobotrys sp. CX1 that can cause cellulose decrystallization. Unlike previously reported expansin-like proteins from microbes, CxEXL22 has a parallel β-sheet domain at the N terminal, containing many hydrophobic residues to form the hydrophobic surface as part of the groove. The direct phylogenetic relationship implied the genetic transfers occurred from nematode to nematicidal fungal Arthrobotrys sp. CX1. CxEXL22 showed strong activity for the hydrolysis of hydrogen bonds between cellulose molecules, especially when highly crystalline cellulose was used as substrate. The hydrolysis efficiency of Avicel was increased 7.9-fold after pretreating with CxEXL22. The rupture characterization of crystalline region indicated that CxEXL22 strongly binds cellulose and breaks up hydrogen bonds in the crystalline regions of cellulose to split cellulose chains, causing significant depolymerization to expose much more microfibrils and enhances cellulose accessibility.

Postnatal overfeeding can lead to persistent increases in hepatic lipid synthesis and the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in adulthood. The ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3PUFAs) exhibit beneficial effects on NAFLD. Here, we employed a rat model and an in vitro HepG2 cell model to investigate whether fish oil (FO) affects hepatic lipid synthesis due to postnatal overfeeding. Male Sprague‐Dawley were divided into litter sizes of three (small litters, SLs) or 10 (normal litters, NLs) on postnatal day 3 and were fed standard chow or FO diet beginning on postnatal week 3 to generate NL, SL, NL‐FO, and SL‐FO groups. The results indicated that the FO diet reduced the postnatal overfeeding‐induced body weight gain and NAFLD characteristics (such as serum and liver triglyceride (TG) and hepatic steatosis). In addition, FO restored the expression of hepatic lipid metabolism‐related genes (including SCD1, FASN, CPT1, LPL, ACC, and SREBP‐1c) in SL‐FO rats. Specifically, the activity and expression pattern of ACC were consistent with SREBP‐1c. Furthermore, HepG2 cells were treated with oleic acid (OA), followed by eicosapentenoic acid (EPA), with or without SREBP‐1c siRNA. The cellular lipid droplets, TG content, and the expression of ACC (by 75%) and SREBP‐1c (by 45%) were increased by OA stimulation (p, Post‐weaning fish oil diet could improve hepatic steatosis and decrease the risk of developing NAFLD in later life, which emphasizing that the ω3PUFAs supplementation should be encouraged in obese children, especially those who have experienced postnatal overfed.

We examined the blood biochemical indicators, cytokines, lung computed tomography scans, including 39 HCs, 18 recovered asymptomatic (RAs), 34 recovered moderate (RMs), and 44 recovered severe/ critical patients (RCs). A liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolomics approach was employed to profile the global metabolites of fasting plasma of these participants.Results: Clinical data and metabolomic profiles suggested that RAs recovered well, but some clinical indicators and plasma metabolites in RMs and RCs were still abnormal as compared with HCs, such as decreased taurine, succinic acid, hippuric acid, some indoles, and lipid species. The disturbed metabolic pathway mainly involved the tricarboxylic cycle, purine, and glycerophospholipid metabolism. Moreover, metabolite alterations differ between RMs and RCs when compared with HCs. Correlation analysis revealed that many differential metabolites were closely associated with inflammation and the renal, pulmonary, heart, hepatic, and coagulation system functions.Conclusion: We uncovered metabolite clusters pathologically relevant to the recovery state in discharged COVID-19 patients which may provide new insights into the pathogenesis of potential organ damage in recovered patients.Keywords: COVID-19, recovery, metabolomics

Some microbial-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs), like glucan oligosaccharides, can be recognized by pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) of plant to elicit further immunity response. In this study, a novel glycoside hydrolase family 55 β-1,3-glucanase (AcGluA) from Archangium sp. strain AC19 was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. Among the reported β-1, 3-glucanases from the glycoside hydrolase 55 family, the purified AcGluA exhibited the highest activity on laminarin at pH 6.0 and 60 °C with 112.3 U/mg. Activity of AcGluA was stable in the range of pH 4.0–9.0 and at temperatures below 60 °C. The Km and Vmax of AcGluA for laminarin were 3.5 mg/ml and 263.5 μmol/(ml·min). AcGluA hydrolyzed laminarin into a series of oligosaccharides, suggesting it was an endo-β-1,3-glucanase. The high dose of oligosaccharides (1600 mg/l) had conspicuous biocontrol efficacy on the defense of rice seedlings to Magnaporthe oryzae, which provided a new idea for the development of green biopesticide. Key points • The AcGluA was determined bacteria-derived β-1,3-glucanases in the GH55 family. • The AcGluA showed the highest activity towards laminarin among reported GH55 family. • The hydrolysates of laminarin showed conspicuous biocontrol efficacy to M. oryzae.

To study the effects of the hard segment content of Polyurethane (PU) on the performances of polyurethane porous mixture (PPM), three PUs with different hard segment contents are selected in this paper. Firstly, the properties including hardness, elongation, e-modulus of PU were tested. Secondly, the cantabro test was used for analyzing the effect of hard segment content on the cantabro losses of the open-graded friction course 16 (OGFC16), OGFC13 and OGFC10 at the different immersed times and temperatures. Thirdly, the freeze–thaw splitting test, rutting test, friction coefficient test and three-point bending test were used for studying the road performances of OGFC13. The results of tests show that the elongation decreases with the increasing of hard segment content. The water and temperature have significant effects on the cantabro losses of PPM. The cantabro loss of PPM increases with the increasing of the immersed time and temperature. And the cantabro losses of PPM are higher than that of asphalt mixture (AM) overall. In terms of the road performance, the hard segment content of PU has a significant effect on the cantabro losses of PPM, has no effect on the tensile strength ratio (TSR). Therefore, the hard segment content of PU has a significant effect on the water stability of PPM in some cases. Besides, the hard segment content has a significant effect the dynamic stability, flexural strength and flexural tensile strain of PPM, has an effect on anti-skid ability in some cases. In the whole, the PU with smaller hard segment content is beneficial to has better road performances. Finally, the PU with the hard segment content from 41% to 51% is recommended.

Double-cable conjugated polymers have been successfully applied into single-component organic solar cells (SCOSCs) in recent years. The chemical structures of conjugated backbones and aromatic cable units, and the rational tuning of nanophase separation between them, are clue factors for double-cable polymers to further enhance the photovoltaic performance. In this work, we introduced a benzothiadiazole (BT) unit into the backbone of double-cable polymers, where BT was conjugated with two linkers, thiophene and thienothiophene, which were used to control the aggregation behavior. The studies reveal that, although thiophene-containing polymer backbones show less aggregation tendency, the corresponding perylene bisimide (PBI) side units form better stacking. Therefore, thiophene-based double-cable polymers had high hole/electron mobilities and hence a high efficiency of 4.35%, while thienothiophene-containing polymer exhibited a low efficiency of 2.35%. These results demonstrate that BT-polymers display a promising application for high performance double-cable conjugated polymers for SCOSCs.

A non-noble-metal hybrid catalyst (Ni2P/NPC-P), composed of N,P-doped porous carbon decorated with surface P-enriched Ni2P nanoparticles, is developed to address the urgent challenges associated with mass production of clean hydrogen fuel. The synthesis features one-pot pyrolysis of inexpensive fluid catalytic cracking slurry, graphitic carbon nitride, and inorganic salts, followed by a feasible surface phosphidation process. As a non-noble metal catalyst, Ni2P/NPC-P demonstrates excellent performance in hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline electrolytes with a low overpotential of 73 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 (η10) and a small Tafel slope of 56 mV dec-1, meanwhile exhibits durability with no significant η10 change after 2000 catalytic cycles. Theoretical calculation reveals that the negatively charged P-enriched surface accelerated the rate-determining transformation and desorption of OH*. In overall water splitting, the electrocatalyst achieves a low η10 of 1.633 V, promising its potential in the cost-effective mass production of hydrogen fuel.

Adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based gene therapy vectors are replication-incompetent and thus pose minimal risk for horizontal transmission or release into the environment. In studies with AAV5-FVIII-SQ (valoctocogene roxaparvovec), an investigational gene therapy for hemophilia A, residual vector DNA was detectable in blood, secreta, and excreta, but it remained unclear how long structurally intact AAV5 vector capsids were present. Since a comprehensive assessment of vector shedding is required by regulatory agencies, we developed a new method (termed iqPCR) that utilizes capsid-directed immunocapture followed by qPCR amplification of encapsidated DNA. The limit of detection for AAV5 vector capsids was 1.17E+04 and 2.33E+04 vg/mL in plasma and semen, respectively. Acceptable precision, accuracy, selectivity, and specificity were verified; up to 1.00E+09 vg/mL non-encapsidated vector DNA showed no interference. Anti-AAV5 antibody plasma concentrations above 141 ng/mL decreased AAV5 capsid quantification, suggesting that iqPCR mainly detects free capsids and not those complexed with antibodies. In a clinical study, AAV5-FVIII-SQ capsids were found in plasma and semen but became undetectable within nine weeks after dose administration. Hence, iqPCR monitors the presence and shedding kinetics of intact vector capsids following AAV gene therapy and informs the potential risk for horizontal transmission.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Ca2+ -activated Cl- channels (Ano1 channels) contribute to the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer. Honokiol is known to inhibit cell proliferation and tumour growth in colorectal cancer. However, the molecular target of honokiol remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether honokiol inhibited cell proliferation of colorectal cancer by targeting Ano1 channels. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Patch-clamp techniques were performed to study the effect of honokiol on Ca2+ -activated Cl- currents in HEK293 cells overexpressing Ano1- or Ano2-containing plasmids or in human colorectal carcinoma SW620 cells. Site-directed mutagenesis was used to identify the critical residues for honokiol-induced Ano1 inhibition. Proliferation of SW620 cells or human intestinal epithelial NCM460 cells by CCK-8 assays. KEY RESULTS Honokiol blocked Ano1 currents in Ano1-overexpressing HEK293 cells and SW620 cells. Honokiol more potently inhibited Ano1 currents than Ano2 currents. Three amino acids (R429, K430 and N435) were critical for honokiol-induced Ano1 inhibition. The R429A/K430L/N435G mutation reduced the sensitivity of Ano1 to honokiol. Honokiol inhibited SW620 cell proliferation, and this effect was reduced by Ano1-shRNAs. Furthermore, Ano1 overexpression promoted proliferation in NCM460 cells with low Ano1 endogenous expression and resulted in an increased sensitivity to honokiol. Overexpression of the R429A/K430L/N435G mutation reduced WT Ano1-induced increase in the sensitivity of NCM460 cells to honokiol. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS We identified a new anticancer mechanism of honokiol, through the inhibition of cell proliferation, by targeting Ano1 Ca2+ -activated Cl- channels.

A mild and efficient protocol for the copper(I)-catalyzed C4-H sulfamidation of 1-naphthylamine derivatives with diphenylsulfonimide (NHSI) was explored at room temperature, affording the desire produces in moderate to good yields. The control experiments indicated that this visible-light-promoted reaction might proceed via a single-electron-transfer process. In addition, preliminary DFT studies for the intermediates in the catalytic cycle were also explored, indicating that the C4 site in the naphthyl ring is the most likely electrophilic reactive site and providing some exact basis for the plausible mechanism.

A simple and efficient protocol for silver-promoted direct C-H phosphonation of 1-naphthylamine derivatives with H-phosphonates was described. This reaction proceeded smoothly for 1-naphthylamine derivatives at the C4 site, providing a facile and efficient route to 4-phosphonated 1-naphthylamine derivatives. This phosphonation could tolerate a diverse type of functional groups at the pyridinyl and naphthyl moieties. Further functionalization of the phosphonated product was also explored at the C2 and C8 sites, such as fluoridation, methylation, methoxylation, and amination. In addition, DFT studies of the reaction intermediate showed that the most electrophilic reactive site is at the C4 site in the naphthyl ring.

The mammalian focal adhesion proteins Pinch1/2 activate integrins and promote cell–extracellular matrix adhesion and migration; however, their roles in adipose tissue and metabolism are unclear. Here we find that high-fat diet (HFD) feeding dramatically increases expression of Pinch1/2 proteins in white adipose tissue (WAT) in mice. Furthermore, expression of Pinch1 is largely upregulated in WAT in leptin-deficient ob/ob type 2 diabetic mice and obese humans. While mice with loss of Pinch1 in adipocytes or global Pinch2 do not display any notable phenotypes, deleting Pinch1 in adipocytes and Pinch2 globally significantly decreases body weight and WAT mass, but not brown adipose tissue mass, in HFD-fed, but not normal chow diet–fed, mice. Pinch loss ameliorates HFD-induced glucose intolerance and fatty liver. After HFD challenge, Pinch loss slightly but significantly accelerates energy expenditure. While Pinch loss decreases adipocyte size and alters adipocyte size distribution, it greatly accelerates cell apoptosis primarily in epididymal WAT and to a lesser extent in subcutaneous WAT. In vitro studies demonstrate that Pinch loss accelerates adipocyte apoptosis by activating the Bim/Caspase-8 pathway. In vivo, genetic ablation of Caspase-8 expression in adipocytes essentially abolishes the ameliorating effects of Pinch deficiency on obesity, glucose intolerance, and fatty liver in mice. Thus, we demonstrate a previously unknown function of Pinch in control of adipose mass, glucose, and fat metabolism via modulation of adipocyte apoptosis. We may define a novel target for the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes.

Nowadays, iron ions as a ubiquitous heavy metal pollutant are gradually concerned and the convenient and quick removal of excessive iron ions in groundwater has become a major challenge for the safety of drinking water. In this study, boron-doped biochar (B-BC) was successfully prepared at various preparation conditions with the addition of boric acid. The as-prepared material has a more developed pore structure and a larger specific surface area (up to 897.97 m²/g). A series of characterization results shows that boric acid effectively activates biochar, and boron atoms are successfully doped on biochar. Compared with the ratio of raw materials, the pyrolysis temperature has a greater influence on the amount of boron doping. Based on Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacity of 800B-BC1:2 at 25 °C, 40 °C, 55 °C are 50.02 mg/g, 95.09 mg/g, 132.78 mg/g, respectively. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model can better describe the adsorption process, the adsorption process is mainly chemical adsorption. Chemical complexation, ions exchange, and co-precipitation may be the main mechanisms for Fe2+ removal.

Outcomes were postoperative clinical outcomes, early and follow-up survival.Results: A total of 517 complicated TBAD patients were enrolled. POD was observed in 13.3% (69/517) patients and was associated with increased hospital length of stay (LOS) and hospital costs (P< 0.001 for both). Besides, POD was found to be an independent risk factor for prolonged ICU stay (odds ratio [OR] 4.39, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.40– 8.01, P< 0.001) and early death (OR 4.42, 95% CI 1.26– 15.54, P= 0.020). Predictors of POD were hybrid procedure (OR 2.17, 95% CI 1.20– 3.92, P= 0.010), the use of benzodiazepine (OR 1.86, 95% CI 1.07– 3.23, P= 0.027) or quinolone (OR 2.35, 95% CI 1.26– 4.38, P= 0.007), creatinine > 2 mg/dL (OR 3.25, 95% CI 1.57– 6.72, P= 0.001) and preoperative blood transfusion (OR 3.31, 95% CI 1.76– 6.21, P< 0.001). After a median follow-up of 73.6 months, POD remained as an independent indicator for follow-up mortality (hazard ratio [HR] 2.40, 95% CI 1.31– 4.38, P= 0.005) after adjusting potential confounders.Conclusion: POD after TEVAR has an incidence of around 13% and could profoundly increase the in-hospital LOS, hospital costs, as well as the early and follow-up mortality. A series of risk factors, including hybrid procedure, the use of benzodiazepine or quinolone, creatinine > 2 mg/dL and preoperative blood transfusion, were identified as independent risk factors for POD. Background Patients are susceptible to immunosuppression in late-stage of sepsis, in which myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) is an important contributor. This study aims to investigate whether all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA), which has been proved to inhibit MDSCs generation in cancer, will ameliorate sepsis-induced immuno-suppression through modulating MDSCs. Methods A clinically relevant “two-hit’’ model of sepsis, the cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) model and secondary pneumonia model, were established in mice. The effects of ATRA on the mortality, the bacterial burden, the expansion and activity of CLP-induced MDSCs, as well as the function of CD4+ T cells were evaluated. Results In CLP model, ATRA was found to reduce frequency of MDSCs in spleen of mice and inhibit activity of MDSCs by regulating the generation and activity of arginase-1 and iNOS, and the secretion of immune-supressive cytokines. ATRA administration eventually reduced mortality of secondary infection by Legionella pneumophila in CLP-surviving mice, which might be associated with the restoration of CD4+ T cells proliferating and secreting activity. Conclusion ATRA can restore CD4+ T cells dysfunction in sepsis by modulating the expansion and function of MDSCs and therefore provides a potential therapy that targets the immunosuppressive state of sepsis.

Plant growth and development are regulated by phytohormones, such as abscisic acid, auxins, or gibberellins. Under drought stress, melatonin and the signaling calcium (Ca2+) are involved in plant defense and stress responses by controlling phytohormone and antioxidant machineries. Exogenous melatonin (MT) promotes drought stress tolerance in plants. As an essential second messenger, the signaling molecule Ca2+ is necessary in the stress tolerance of plants and might increase stress tolerance induced by exogenous melatonin. The present study elucidated the effects of Ca2+-MT on Dalbergia odorifera seedlings under drought stress. Results showed increases in growth traits and photosynthesis indexes (pigments, net photosynthetic rate, water use efficiency, stomatal conductance, and transpiration) by MT and Ca2+ under non stress and stress conditions. Under drought stress, the water status in leaves was slightly ameliorated by MT and Ca2+ treatments, whereas the Ca2+-MT combination strongly improved water status. Comparison between combined Ca2+-MT and single Ca2+/MT treatments showed that superoxide anion was significantly lower in Ca2+-MT-treated seedlings. Lipid peroxidation was lower in Ca2+-MT-treated seedlings under drought stress. Further, relative conductivity was significantly decreased by Ca2+ and MT treatments under stress compared with seedlings untreated with Ca2+ or MT under drought. The accumulation of proline decreased by Ca2+ and MT under stress, but the carbohydrates and protein contents were increased by exogenous MT and Ca2+. Under drought, antioxidant systems (peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities, and glutathione [GSH] and ascorbic acid [ASA] levels) were significantly increased by the Ca2+ and MT treatments. The combined treatment showed better performance in increasing GSH and ASA levels than single MT or Ca2+ treatment. The gibberellin GA3 and cytokine ZR increased significantly under non stress and stress conditions, but exogenous Ca2+ or MT did not increase their activities compared with those in the control groups. Exogenous Ca2+ and Ca2+-MT enhanced indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) content in D. odorifera leaves under stress compared with the control. Moreover, abscisic acid (ABA) level is downregulated by MT and Ca2+-MT treatments compared with the control. The seedlings treated with Ca2+ only showed increase in ABA concentration under drought stress. This study provides an insight into a possible coordination between Ca2+ and melatonin and into drought tolerance in woody plants.

A novel and efficient synthetic method for the preparation of various pyrroloindolines from 2-alkynyl arylazides and thioacetamides was developed. The reaction was carried out in a one-pot process under mild reaction conditions to afford the products in moderate to good yields, which has the potential to be used in organic synthesis.

Neuroexcitotoxicity is a common feature in neuronal damage and neurodegenerative diseases. Our previous studies have confirmed that neuronal and astrocytic G‑protein-coupled receptor 30 (GPR30) play a key role in neuroprotection in vivo and in vitro. Microglia are considered as immune cells in the central nervous system. However, the role of microglial GPR30 in neuroprotection against neuroexcitotoxicity remained unclear. In this study, MTT, Western blot, immunocytochemical staining, phagocytosis assay and wound healing assay were employed to detect the effect of GPR30 in N9 microglial cells after exposure to glutamate. We found that the treatment of GPR30 specific agonist G1 inhibited glutamate-induced proliferation and activation in N9 microglial cells. G1 inhibited M1 polarization, facilitated M2 polarization, and decreased over-phagocytosis but had no effect on migration ability in microglia. The result of neurons and microglia co-culture showed that the activation of microglial GPR30 protected neurons from excitotoxicity through the NF-κB/MAPK signaling pathways. Our findings suggested a key role of microglial GPR30 in excitatory neuronal damage and neurodegenerative diseases.

Low-cost and efficient bifunctional catalysts are urgently needed for overall water splitting used in large-scale energy storage. In this study, we develop a nickel and iron (di)sulfide (Ni-Fe-S) composite catalyst that is in situ synthesized and fixed within the intergranular nanopores inside high pure polycrystalline graphite. Two precursor solutions (reactants) may permeate the graphite intergranular pores to a depth of more than 3.5 mm. The nanoscale pores serve as an array of nanoreactors for the synthesis of the Ni-Fe-S nanoparticles under conditions much milder than usual. The prepared catalyst efficiently catalyzes both the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) in 1.0 M KOH. It delivers a current density of 400 mA cm-2 at a full cell voltage of around 2.3 V without considerable activity decay over 24 h electrolysis. The active species of the catalyst are different for the HER and OER and discussed accordingly. The synthesis strategy based on the nanopores in a monolithic conductive substrate proves to be a simple, efficient, and promising way to prepare electrocatalysts that are cheap, abundant, and industrially attractive.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) thin films with high β-phase content exhibit excellent piezoelectric and dielectric properties. In this work, PVDF–NaCl composite film with high β-phase content was prepared by near-electric-field three-dimensional (3D) printing. The mechanism of the influence of NaCl on the nucleation and phase transition of the PVDF thin films was revealed based on the synergistic effect of the electric field and salt addition. The composite films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction analysis, and measurements of electrical properties. The results showed that NaCl can increase the density of the membrane, while the β-phase content and dielectric properties of the PVDF composite membrane are positively correlated with the amount of NaCl added. The β-phase content reached a maximum value of 52.68% when the amount of NaCl added was 0.05% by weight. The dielectric constant of the PVDF composite film increased with increasing NaCl content. The electrical properties also indicated that PVDF composite film with higher NaCl content showed higher electrical output voltage, while the response voltage of the composite film with 0.05 wt.% NaCl was higher than that of pure PVDF film.

The Gaoshiti-Moxi Gas Field has been discovered recently in the central part of Sichuan Basin, which might be the biggest gas field in China. In this gas field, a large amount of gas is from Neoproterozoic Sinian (Ediacaran) karstic carbonate rocks. The gas was originated from cracking of oil, and the oil source rocks are the Sinian and Cambrian strata. In this study, the characteristics of these carbonate reservoir rocks have been studied based on subsurface data and outcrop observation. The carbonate rocks are at the Sinian Dengying Formation, and the reservoir properties are controlled by sedimentary facies and diagenesis. The Dengying Formation is composed of algal mounds and grainstone build-ups, which were developed in a restricted platform setting from glacial period to interglacial period. Due to tectonic movement and eustatic cycle in Sichuan Basin during Neoproterozoic Era, five sedimentary cycles of transgression and regression have been developed in the Dengying Formation. According to the sedimentary facies and carbon-oxygen isotope variation, five sedimentary cycles have been recognized. Due to the penecontemporaneous dolomitization, together with hypergene karstification and late burial dissolution, the reservoir properties of the carbonates rocks have been improved greatly.

Early seedling development is one of the most crucial period of the plant's life cycle, which is highly susceptible to adverse environmental conditions, especially those impose by salt stress. Castor plant (Ricinus communis) is a famous non-edible oilseed and salt-resistant crop worldwide. However, the specific metabolic responses in the cotyledons and roots of this species during seedling establishment under salt stress are still not clearly understood. In the present study, 16 d castor seedlings were treated with 150 mM NaCl for 6 d, and the metabolite profiling of cotyledons and roots was conducted using liquid chromatography (LC) combined with electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF-MS). The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) results showed that the metabolites were great differed in cotyledons and roots under salt stress. There were 38 differential metabolites, mainly including fatty acid, nucleic acid and organic acids in the cotyledons, but only 19 differential metabolites, mainly including fatty acid and organic acids in the roots under such condition. Furthermore, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis revealed that flavone and flavonol biosynthesis, pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, citrate cycle and carotenoid biosynthesis were the common metabolic pathways in response to salt stress in the two organs. Salt stress caused metabolite process alteration mainly on carbon and nitrogen metabolisms, and the carbon allocation from root to cotyledon was increased. Additionally, changes of amino acids and nucleic acids profiles were only found in the cotyledons, and the roots could enhance the activity of antioxidant enzyme systems to scavenge ROS under salinity. In conclusion, the present research provides an improved understanding on specific physiological changes in the cotyledons in castor early seedlings, and explores their interaction under salt stress.

An environment-friendly, water-soluble, and cellulose based binder (lithium carboxymethyl cellulose, CMC-Li) was successfully synthesized by using Li+ to replace Na+ in the commercial sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na). Li-O2 batteries based on the CMC-Li binder present enhanced discharge specific capacities (11151 mAh/g at 100 mA/g) and a superior cycling stability (100 cycles at 200 mA/g) compared with those based on the CMC-Na binder. The enhanced performance may originate from the electrochemical stability of the CMC-Li binder and the ion-conductive nature of CMC-Li, which promotes the diffusion of Li+ in the cathode and consequently retards the increase of charge transfer resistance of the cathode during cycling. The results show that the water-soluble CMC-Li binder can be a green substitute for poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) binder based on organic solvent in the lithium oxygen batteries (LOBs).

The shuttling of polysulfides is the most detrimental contribution to degrading the capacity and cycle stability of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Adding a carbon interlayer to prevent the polysulfides from migrating is feasible, and a rational design of the structures and surface properties of the carbon layer is essential to increasing its effectiveness. Herein, we report a hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) created by carbonization of bis(phenoxy)phosphazene and in-situ doping of triple heteroatoms into the carbon lattice to fabricate an effective polysulfide-trapping interlayer. The generated carbon integrates the advantages of a hierarchical porous structure, a high specific area and rich dopants (N, O and P), to yield chemisorption and physical confinement for polysulfides and fast ion-transport synergistically. The HPC interlayer significantly improves the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries, including an exceptional discharge capacity of 1509 mA h/g at 0.06 C and a high capacity retention of 83.7 % after 250 cycles at 0.3 C. This work thus proposes a facile in-situ synthesis of heteroatom-doped carbon with rational porous structures for suppressing the shuttle effect.
