Abstract

The functionalization of elastomers by phosphonate groups remains relatively unexplored considering the great potential these polymers would represent for applications. In this paper, thiol-functional oligophosphonates were designed and coupled by a thiol-ene reaction to a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). We adopted a RAFT methodology with dimethyl vinylphosphonate (DMVP) and a high-temperature thermolysable xanthate, to afford the monophosphonate DMVP-SH and P(DMVP)5-SH, a mercapto(oligophosphonate) of DPn = 5. We conducted a comparative study of the thiol-ene coupling reaction of DMVP-SH and P(DMVP)5-SH with a SBR for different degrees of functionalization. We observed that P(DMVP)5-SH was as reactive as DMVP-SH. Although only limited grafting could be achieved without alteration of the SBR structure by radical intercoupling reactions, P(DMVP)5-SH was found superior to DMVP-SH for increasing the phosphonate content of the SBR thanks to its oligophosphonate character.

Abstract

Dibenzyltrithiocarbonate-mediated RAFT polymer- ization of dimethyl-p-vinylbenzylphosphonate and its copoly- merization with styrene are studied in order to access well- defined statistical and block copolymers containing controlled amounts of dimethylphosphonate groups. NMR and SEC anal- ysis of the (co)polymers confirm the controlled character of the polymerizations. ABA triblock copolymers are treated with TMSiBr/MeOH in order to transform the dimethylphosphonate groups into phosphonic acids while keeping the midchain tri- thiocarbonate group and triblock nature unaffected. Alterna- tively, the combination of trithiocarbonate aminolysis with TMSiBr/MeOH treatment of the same triblock copolymers leads to phosphonic acid-functional diblock copolymer counterparts. Abstract

RAFT/MADIX polymerisation of vinylphosphonic acid (VPA) was controlled in water with an O-ethyl xanthate transfer agent. This represents the first example of reversible deactivation radical polymerisation of a monomer bearing an unprotected phosphonic acid function. Hence, macromolecular engineering of polyphosphonates can now be envisioned by directly polymerising VPA in water.
