Essential oils are complex mixtures of volatile compounds, primarily composed of terpenes and abundant aromatic plants. For example, Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) is an aromatic plant that produces a monoterpene-rich essential oil, and studies show that this essential oil has excellent antioxidant activity. Erythrocytes incubated under high sugar levels are constantly exposed to reactive oxygen species, which results in the oxidation of their membranes. Objective: The aim of this article is to investigate the antioxidant activity of lemongrass essential oil and its protective effect on erythrocytes exposed to high levels of glucose. Materials and Methods: The essential oil was obtained by steam dragging distillation; blood cell suspensions were incubated with glucose 5, 20, 50, and 100 mmol/L. The amount of TBARS produced was measured at 532 nm. In addition, the percentage of antioxidant activity was assessed by DPPH free radical assay. Results: Lemongrass essential oil showed an increase in the antioxidant activity up to 240 mg/ml, while ascorbic acid used as positive control showed a dose-dependent increase in antioxidant activity starting at 1 mmol/L up to 18 mmol/L. However, such a lemongrass dose prevented peroxidation in erythrocytes incubated under a high glucose media, whereas ascorbic acid showed a protective effect only at a concentration of 1 mmol/L. Conclusion: Lemongrass essential oil has high antioxidant activity compared to standard antioxidant as ascorbic acid, and also acts as a protective agent against erythrocyte lipoperoxidation due to hyperglycemia in vitro.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial toxicant that can potentially damage the liver. Tangeretin (TGN) is a natural flavonoid that displays various pharmacological activities. This experiment was carried out to evaluate the protective effects of TGN against BPA-induced hepatic impairment in the male albino rat. Twenty-four male albino rats were equally divided into four different groups: control, BPA (100mg/kg), BPA+ TGN (100mg/kg+50mg/kg) and TGN (50mg/kg). BPA exposure significantly decreased the activities of catalase (CAT), superoxidase dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), glutathione reductase (GSR), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and glutathione (GSH) content while substantially increasing the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels. A substantial increase in the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was also observed in BPA treated rats. Moreover, BPA significantly increased the inflammatory markers, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-1β (IL-1β)levels, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity, and histopathological damages. However, co-treatment with TGN efficiently minimized the BPA-induced biochemical, inflammatory, and histopathological impairments in rat liver. The present study shows that TNG has significant potential to avert BPA-induced liver damage to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Objectives The present study aimed to investigate the effects of acute hypoxia exposure following prenatal stress on the novelty-seeking behavior and hippocampus of adolescent rats. Methods The offspring were divided into prenatal stress (PS) and non-stress (NS) groups. Both groups were exposed to hypoxia on postnatal day 10 (P10) while control groups were undisturbed. Novel object recognition task was performed in each group. Next, brains were collected to examine hippocampus via immunohistochemical and biochemical studies on postnatal day 35 (P35). Results PS decreased novelty discrimination and synaptophysin (SYN) expressions in both CA1 and CA3 of the hypoxia group prominently (p < 0.05). Nestin-expressing cells were reduced while vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression was enhanced in the subgranular zone (SGZ) of PS-hypoxia group (p < 0.05). VEGF enhancement triggered angiogenesis in the CA1 and CA3 significantly (p < 0.05). PS also increased thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels in the hypoxia group as a result of oxidative stress (p < 0.05). Relevance. Dislipidemia is one of the major manifestation of thyroid disease process due to alteration of metabolic parameters which are also seen in metabolic syndrome. Though oxidative stress has been implicated in both processes, controversial results have been obtained. Objective. To determine the status of lipid peroxidation product (Lpx) in the study group and identify the association of different components of metabolic syndrome. Material and Methods: 102 patients comprising of 60 healthy euthyroid controls and 42 hypothyroid patients served as the study group. Blood samples were collected for fasting blood sugar, renal parameters, lipid profile, tri-iodothyronin (T3), thyroxine (T4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Level of lipid peroxidation in the samples was determined by monitoring the level of thiobarbituric acid like substances (TBARS) like substances. Results. The demographic parameters were significantly altered in hypothyroid patients. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure amongst both the groups was observed to have higher mean value in hypothyroid patients. The fasting blood sugar (FBS), total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) in the hypothyroid was significantly higher than euthyroid control groups. The most frequent alteration in the hypothyroid patients was rise in SBP (95 %), Hypertriglyceridemia (50 %) and raised waist circumference (48 %) and DBP (42 %). A fourfold rise in Lpx was observed in hypothyroid subjects (p0.001). Robust positive association was observed between TSH and Lpx. Multiple linear regressions revealed strongest and statistically significant association between serum serum thyroid stimulating hormone and waist circumference. Conclusion. The hypothyroid patients have significant higher degree of oxidative stress and the components of metabolic syndrome. They are the candidates for preventive health intervention.

SummaryThe aim of this study was to evaluate the follicular development, morphological integrity, and oxidative stress of preantral ovarian follicles from Bos taurus indicus females grown in vitro with ascorbic acid. Ovaries (n = 20) from Bos taurus indicus females were collected, fragmented, and were cultured in vitro for 6 or 12 days in minimum essential medium (MEM), or MEM supplemented with 50 or 100 ng/ml ascorbic acid, with an extracellular matrix of agarose gel, in an incubator at 38.5°C; every 2 days, 100% of the culture medium was replaced. The data were analyzed using the chi-squared test and/or Fisher’s exact test. In the event of a significant effect, the proportions were compared using a 2 × 2 proportion test. The oxidative stress analysis data were submitted to analysis of variance followed by the Bonferroni test. Values were considered significant when P ≤ 0.05. The addition of 100 ng/ml of ascorbic acid to the in vitro culture medium of preantral ovarian follicles from bovine females promoted follicular development, was efficient in maintaining morphological integrity, as well as the stability of reactive oxygen species, after 6 days of in vitro culture.

The fatty acid composition of top-selling fish oil dietary supplements in the markets was compared with the content stated on product label, and their oxidative qualities and heavy metal contents were evaluated in this study. While all the capsule groups (C) confirmed the label information, it was observed that one-third of the syrup groups (S) had less than the specified content. Capsule groups generally had richer EPA and DHA contents than syrup groups in the samples examined. The peroxide values (PV) of all fish oil capsules and syrups were found in the range of 1.97–2.89 mEq/kg and 2.22–18.30 mEq/kg, respectively. As for free fatty acids (FFA) values, the C4, S6, S9, and S10 groups were above the 3% oleic acid limit recommended for high-quality oils. However, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) values were found below 1 mg MA/kg in all groups. All fish oil supplements were within the limits specified in terms of As (0.50–4.19 µg/g), Cd (0.14 µg/g detected for one group, C5), Cu (not detected), Fe (0.32–15.7 µg/g), and Hg (≤ 0.1 µg/g). On the other hand, two fish oil supplements from the capsule group (0.17 for C6 and 1.01 µg/g for C8) and one group from the syrup group (0.29 µg/g for S10) exceeded the recommended limit in terms of Pb (0.1 mg/kg). As a result of the research, it can be concluded that the chemical quality of fish oils in syrup form needs to be improved and their reliability in terms of fatty acid content should be increased. Considering the heavy metals, it seems significant to follow up the fish oil products more strictly.

Healthy mice were submitted or not to daily chronic swimming and/or daily yerba mate (YM) infusion intake and had their bloods analyzed after four weeks. We hypothesized that daily intake of YM may act differently on lipid mobilization and, on the creatine, lactate and irisin levels in sedentary mice and those submitted to chronic exercise. The groups were (n=48): YM-non-treated control (NTC), YM-non-treated swimming control (NSC), non-roasted YM (NRY), roasted YM (RY), swimming plus non-roasted YM (SNRY), swimming plus roasted YM (SRY). O estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a contribuição do treinamento resistido em marcadores de estresse oxidativo e força de pessoas vivendo com HIV. Trata-se de um ensaio clínico não randomizado, com delineamento de série temporal descontinua, e amostragem por voluntários pertencentes ao Programa de Atenção Municipal às DST/HIV/AIDS (PAMDHA) com tratamento de Terapia Antirretroviral de Alta Atividade. Foram realizadas avaliações de composição corporal, aptidão física, dano oxidativo e enzimas antioxidantes. Nas variáveis antropométricas entre homens foi encontrada diferenças entre os grupos nos valores de circunferência abdominal (pré = 93,95 ± 8,21; pós = 92,25 ± 7,46) e percentual de gordura (pré = 88,5 ± 6,35; pós = 18,57 ± 7,74). Os níveis de força indicaram melhora em ambos os grupos (p < 0,05). As análises de grupamentos Carbonila, da atividade da enzima antioxidante Catalase, Superóxido Dismutase (SOD), substâncias reativas ao ácido tiobarbitúrico - Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) e os níveis de TNF-α no soro de indivíduos HIV+, não apresentaram diferenças significativas (p < 0,05). Os resultados demonstraram que o treinamento resistido de intensidade moderada pode ser utilizado como agente terapêutico adjunto ao uso da TARV para a manutenção e melhora da saúde de pessoas com HIV.

This study investigated the effects of lemon extract powder and vinegar powder on the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of pork sausages naturally cured using white kimchi powder during storage for 30 days. Six batches were included: control (0.01% sodium nitrite and 0.05% sodium ascorbate); treatment 1 (0.3% white kimchi powder and 0.5% lemon extract powder); treatment 2 (0.3% white kimchi powder and 1.0% lemon extract powder); treatment 3 (0.3% white kimchi powder and 0.5% vinegar powder); treatment 4 (0.3% white kimchi powder and 1.0% vinegar powder); and treatment 5 (0.3% white kimchi powder, 0.5% lemon extract powder, and 0.5% vinegar powder). Food additives are required to maintain the freshness and quality of foods, particularly meats. However, chemical additives may not be preferred by consumers, and natural materials with antimicrobial and antioxidant effects may be used as replacements for common chemical additives. Accordingly, in this study, we compared the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of natural compounds extracted with ethanol and hot water, and emulsion sausage prepared with natural ethanol extracts was analyzed for pH, color, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and Clostridium perfringens growth during storage. The antimicrobial activities of 49 natural extract candidates against Listeria monocytogenes, C. perfringens, Salmonella spp., and Escherichia coli were analyzed, and six natural materials with excellent antibacterial activities, i.e., Elaeagnus umbellata Thunb. f. nakaiana (Araki) H. Ohba, Punica granatum L., Ecklonia cava, Nelumbo nucifera Gaertner, and Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill., and Rubus coreanus Miq. were evaluated to determine their total polyphenol contents and DPPH radical scavenging activities. The total polyphenol contents of ethanol extracts were higher than those of hot water extracts, whereas DPPH radical scavenging activity was found to be higher in hot water extracts. The TBARS values of emulsion sausages were significantly increased as storage time increased, and the TBARS values of emulsion sausages prepared with natural extracts were lower than those of control sausages. Natural extract-treated emulsion sausages showed a 99% reduction in bacterial contents compared with untreated sausages on day 2, with greater than 99.9% reduction after day 3. Thus, these results demonstrated that natural extracts could have applications as natural preservatives in meat products.

Background: Frying is one of the popular cooking methods for the preparation of food especially meat products. However, this process has some adverse effects, such as lipid oxidation that results in deterioration and rancidity of food during preparation and storage. Malondialdehyde (MDA) as a secondary product of oxidation is commonly used as an index of rancidity in food products. However, the level of MDA produced during the frying process varies depending on the type of food. Methods: This study was performed to evaluate the levels of MDA before and after the frying process in different products, including chicken, fish, pan kebab, beef, sausage, and hamburger. Also, the effect of meat content in hamburger was evaluated on the MDA level. The spectrophotometric thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) test was used to determine MDA in the food products. Results: The concentration of MDA in the products increased significantly (P < 0.01) after frying in oil. The highest amount of MDA between the products was detected in fried fish (1.24 µM/g). By increasing the percentage of meat in hamburgers, the content of MDA increased in this product. In the hamburger containing 90% of meat, the MDA level was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than others (0.98 µM/g). Conclusion: The results of the present study can provide proper knowledge about the levels of lipid peroxidation and the safety of different fried meat products.

Cannabis is an annual herbaceous plant sometimes grown for decoration and used as bird food that looks like flax. The study wanted to determine if a Cannabis extract may have an effect on how anxious and depressed the female mice behaved. forty healthy female mice were divided into four groups. Tap water was administered to the first group (control). Ethanol was administered to second group (positive control). The third and four groups were given 1 and 2 mg/kg cannabis extract respectively. Treatment continued for 14 days. After therapy, the light–dark chamber, forced swimming, tail suspension, plus lamb and open field tests were done to assess anxiety and depressive behavior. The results indicated that the anxiety and depression were increased in treated females significantly compared to control. Biochemical results showed that DA,5-HT, AChE, GSH, GST, CAT and SOD were decreased while TBARS, corticosterone and cortisol were increased. In conclusion, cannabis effects this kind of females’ behavior but the mechanisms are not clear yet. We need more researches on this trend.

The study investigated the effect of 10% aqueous extracts of ginger, garlic and onion on the quality and shelf life of frozen chevon and pork as reflected by changes in values of 2-thiobartituric acid reactive substances (2-TBARS) and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) over a 14 day storage under frozen conditions. The pH, 2-TBARS and TVB-N of chevon and pork were measured from frozen storage at -20°C after 14 days. The 10% aqueous extracts resulted in low pH values of 5.63, 5.79 and 5.67 at 14 day for chevon mixed with ginger, garlic and onion, respectively. After 14 days of frozen storage, results on 2-TBARS expressed as mg MDA/kg meat, for chevon mixed with aqueous extracts of ginger, garlic and onion were 2.62±0.01, 1.45±0.01 and 4.71±0.03 which were lower compared to 5.93±0.01 for raw chevon. On the other hand, on day 14 of frozen storage, pork mixed with garlic aqueous extracts had lower TBARS value of 2.13±0.01 compared to the values obtained in pork mixed with onion, ginger and control pork sample, respectively. TVB-N, in mg/100 g, was highest in control raw chevon and pork registering values of 95.70±0.32 and 84.00±0.40, respectively after 14 days. Low values of TVB-N of 7.24±0.23, 12.37±0.23 and 16.61±0.50 were observed in chevon mixed with ginger, garlic and onion compared to the values for pork mixed with ginger, garlic and onion. Therefore, findings from this study have revealed that natural aqueous antioxidant extracts of ginger, garlic and onion has antioxidative effect on lipid peroxidation in frozen stored fresh chevon and pork. The potential interactions among food additives/contaminants and the consequences to biological systems is a topic that is rarely addressed in scientific literature. Thus, the current study investigated if the combined administration of ASP and AFB1 would impair hepatic and renal oxidative status. Male Wistar rats received during 14 days once a day ASP (75 mg/Kg) and/or AFB1 (250 µg/Kg) through intragastric route. At the end of experimental protocol, samples of liver and kidneys were collected for assessing biochemical markers of oxidative status. In the hepatic tissue, the treatment with a single substance (ASP or AFB1) caused an increase in TBARS levels, and a reduction in non-enzymatic antioxidant defenses (Vit C and NPSH levels and FRAP test). In the kidneys, TBARS levels were increased only in the group that received ASP + AFB1. The association reduced NPSH content, while the treatment with AFB1 reduced the FRAP levels. GST and CAT activities were increased in all treatments. Overall, ASP and AFB1 association presented higher toxic effects to the tissues. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study demonstrating that the associated use of both ASP and AFB1 induces more extensive injuries in comparison to the effects caused by each one alone. Therefore, these data demonstrated that concomitant exposure to ASP and AFB1 potentiated their oxidative damage in hepatic tissue, suggesting that this organ is particularly sensitive to the toxic action induced by these substances.

Two levels of copper sulphate and copper-methionine were evaluated on lipid oxidative stability in liver and Longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle, measured by thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in liver. 40 Merino x Texel lambs were randomly distributed into 5 treatments with 8 animals each. Treatments were: control, without copper addition; 10 or 30 mg of Cu/Kg DM complete diet in the form of Cu-sulphate or Cu-methionine. After 120 days period, animals were slaughtered and samples collected, for analyses on activities of SOD, GPx and TBARS in livers. LT muscle was collected for TBARS analysis at carcass dressing, 3 and 6 days after chilling at 4°C and 12 months after vacuum freezing. SOD and GPx activities were higher in animals receiving copper. TBARS values in muscle were higher in the control group at the time of boning but did not differ after 12 months of vacuum freezing. TBARS values in muscle during shelf life, with a linear increase over the days, did not vary. It was found that copper supplementation, even at considered toxic levels of 30mg/kg DM, plus 9mg/kg basal diet, resulted in increased hepatic concentration of liver antioxidant enzymes and showed no detrimental effects on muscle oxidative stability.

Introduction and Aim:Diabetes mellitus, especially type II DM is one among the most prevalent metabolic diseases in the global scale. One of the commonest complications of diabetes mellitus is vestibulopathy affecting the inner ear. Malondialdehyde (MDA) obtained from lipid peroxidation of poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) is an important compound that generally serves as one of the key markers for oxidative stress. The aim of the study is to prove the significance of MDA in Vestibulopathy in Type-2 i.e.,non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Methodology: A cross-sectional study of 100 diabetic patients of age group between 35 years and 50 years were tested for vestibular function by electronystagmography(Commonly used test to determine and evaluate vestibular system). Based on the biothermal caloric stimulation the Clausen butterfly chart was generated and thus the code is ascertained. Serum levels of Malon-di-aldehyde were assayed by TBARS method (Thiobarbituric acid Reactive substances). Results: The study proved, that there was a 4 times increased risk of developing vestibulopathy with increasing duration of diabetes. It also proved that there was an increased risk of developing vestibulopathy in diabetic patients, having MDA > 2?mol/L. Conclusion: Thereby the study confirmed the clinical significance of periodic screening of MDA levels, in diabetic patients, particularly those with uncontrolled/poor glycemic control & with longer duration of diabetes. Estimation of their serum MDAlevels and vestibular function by the electronystagmography test, is advised in order to prevent the occurrence of diabetic vestibulopathy at the earliest and also to prevent the worsening of any such, other complications associated with the disease.

Introdução: O tabagismo é considerado uma epidemia mundial e, segundo a Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS), cerca de cinco milhões de pessoas morre a cada ano em consequência das doenças relacionadas ao tabaco. O tabaco, além de vários efeitos nocivos, está relacionado com aumento das células de defesa. Objetivo: Avaliar a viabilidade de células polimorfonucleares (PMNs) e o dano oxidativo no sangue de indivíduos fumantes e não fumantes através da formação de espécies reativas ao ácido tiobarbitúrico (TBARS). Metodologia: Foram avaliados 22 voluntários (ambos os sexos): 11 fumantes e 11 não fumantes. Após responderem um questionário sobre dependência do tabaco, amostras de sangue foram obtidas por punção venosa, sendo parte das mesmas destinadas para análise no microscópio de luz para avaliar a viabilidade dos PMNs e parte para análise da formação de TBARS. Resultados: Os dados demonstraram que 18% possuem grau de dependência à nicotina baixo, 27% dos tabagistas possuem grau de dependência médio e 18% considerados com nível de dependência à nicotina elevada. Com relação à viabilidade dos PMNs e a formação de TBARS, nenhuma diferença significativa foi observada entre os grupos tabagistas e não tabagistas, embora o grupo tabagistas apresentou uma diminuição na porcentagem da viabilidade dos PMNs. Conclusão: Os dados demonstraram que a maior percentagem dos participantes possui um grau médio de dependência à nicotina, A viabilidade dos PMNs e a formação de TBARS não foi alterada entre os grupos tabagistas e não tabagistas, embora o grupo tabagistas apresentou uma diminuição na porcentagem da viabilidade dos PMNs. The carbon nanotube is one of the most encouraging tools in nanotechnology. However, the extent and interaction with different plant systems of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) are not fully understood under stress conditions. The present study aimed to evaluate the potential of MWCNT to improve tolerance to copper toxicity in maize (Zea mays). For this purpose, Zea mays was grown under exposure to exogenously applied MWCNT concentrations (50-100-250 mg L−1), individually or combined, with 50 μM copper (Cu stress) for 7 days. MWCNTs eliminated the adverse effects caused by stress on water status, gas parameters and osmotic potential state. Although stress activated the antioxidant system, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation (hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content) and lipid peroxidation (TBARS) increased because stress-applied maize was unable to perform an effective scavenging action. MWCNT applications had a strong ROS scavenging effect on maize seedlings. Under Cu stress, there were different responses on antioxidant capacity depending on MWCNT concentrations called the hormesis effect. Under stress, M50-M100 (50 and 100 mg L−1) reversed the radical accumulation by providing increased superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and the regeneration of ascorbate (AsA) and glutathione (GSH). The MWCNT-activated enzyme system maintained the low levels of H2O2 and TBARS contents against stress. However, after the highest MWCNT concentration (250 mg L−1) plus stress exposure, this trend could not be continued, as by represented the disrupted antioxidant capacity and the reduced AsA/DHA and GSH redox state in maize seedlings. Therefore, the levels of H2O2 and TBARS were similar to the stress ones. Our findings indicated that MWCNT provided a new potential tool against Cu stress to improve the stress tolerance mechanism in maize.

The aim of this study was the evaluation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) as an indicator of lipid peroxidation, total protein, and pH of saliva in children with various degrees of early childhood caries in comparison with caries-free children. METHODS This case-control study was carried out on 90 children 3-5 years old in three equal groups, including caries-free children (CF), early childhood caries (ECC), and severe early childhood caries (S-ECC) who were age- and sex matched. The current study reveals the pharmacological and phytochemical potential of different solvent fractions of Ifloga spicata. Antimicrobial and free radical scavenging activities, DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay, and cytotoxic effects of plant samples on lymphocytes stressed with hydrogen were performed. Ifloga spicata ethyl acetate fraction markedly showed higher antibacterial potential against P. aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) and E. Coli (ATCC 25922) bacteria. The current study aimed to investigate the role of fucoidan in the oxidative and apoptotic effects of sulfoxaflor, a neonicotinoid sulfoximine insecticide, in the brain of Swiss albino mice (Mus musculus). Sulfoxaflor and fucoidan were administered to mice at doses of 15 mg/kg/day (1/50 oral LD50) and 50 mg/kg/day, respectively, by oral gavage for 24 h or 7 days. The tGSH, TBARS and protein levels, and GPx, GR, and GST enzyme activities were determined by spectrophotometric methods. Caspase-3 gene expression level was determined by RT-PCR. Data analysis showed that brains of sulfoxaflor-treated mice exhibited higher TBARS levels; GPx, GR, and GST enzyme activities; and caspase-3 expression levels, as well as lower levels of tGSH. Co-administration of fucoidan and sulfoxaflor reduced the TBARS levels, increased tGSH levels, and increased GPx, GR, and GST enzyme activities. Fucoidan also decreased the sulfoxaflor-induced up-regulation of caspase-3 mRNA expression. Results of the present study showed that sulfoxaflor caused oxidative stress by inducing lipid peroxidation and altering GSH-dependent antioxidants in the brain of mice. In addition, sulfoxaflor may trigger apoptotic cell death shown by the up-regulation of caspase-3. Fucoidan treatment modulated all the aforementioned alterations in the brain of mice. It was concluded that fucoidan might have antioxidant effects that support the GSH-dependent antioxidant system and can play a modulator role in oxidative stress and caspase-3 expression in the brain of sulfoxaflor treated-mice.

Shrimp lipid (SL) from Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) cephalothorax was subjected to ethanol separation with subsequent cholesterol removal. Around 98.4% of cholesterol was removed from cholesterol rich polar lipid fraction (PLF), in which PLF/β cyclodextrin (β-CD)/mixed solvents (ethyl acetate/water,1:1) at the ratio of 1:10:20 (w/w/v) were used. Thereafter, PLF with lowered cholesterol was combined with non-polar fraction rich in triglycerides to obtain lowered cholesterol shrimp lipid (LC-SL). Astaxanthin content in LC-SL was augmented by three-fold, compared to that found in SL. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) contents of LC-SL were also significantly increased, contrasted with SL. Peroxide value and phospholipids were decreased in LC-SL (4.56 ± 0.15 meq/kg and 9.94 ± 1.9%) compared to those of SL (4.80 ± 0.25 meq/kg and 49.11 ± 2.1%), while TBARS and p-Anisidine values remained unchanged. However, conjugated dienes and free fatty acids were augmented, plausibly due to hydrolysis. FTIR spectra confirmed the increased degree of unsaturation of lipids. Context Water scarcity often accompanied by limited water intake (WI) in livestock may result in pre-slaughter stress, thereby affecting meat quality parameters. Aims This study was conducted to determine the effect of vitamin C (VC) supplementations on fatty acid (FA), lipids oxidation and sensory attributes of Longissimus lumborum muscles of Xhosa goats subjected to different watering regimen. Methods In total, 42 goats were randomly assigned into seven treatments: without water restriction, WR (W0, control); WR of 70% of ad libitum WI (W70); WR of 50% ad libitum WI (W50); WR of 70% of ad libitum WI + 3 g VC daily (W70+); WR of 50% of ad libitum WI intake + 3 g VC daily (W50+); WR of 70% of ad libitum WI + 3 g VC and extra 5 g VC given every 8 days (W70++); WR of 50% of ad libitum WI + 3 g VC and extra 5 g VC given every 8 days (W50++). The goats were fed for 75 days and killed following standard procedures. Bodyweight changes, thaw loss, ultimate pH (pHu), thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS), moisture and fat content, sensory attributes and FA profile of the meat were evaluated. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a metabolic condition that comprises a spectrum of liver diseases. Non-pharmacological treatments such as functional food consumption and aerobic exercise training (AET) have been recommended. To evaluate the combined effects of acai pulp consumption and AET on the development of NAFLD induced by a high-fat diet. Male Fischer rats received either standard or high-fat diet. Animals (21.8% lard and 1% cholesterol) were treated with lyophilized acai pulp (1%), AET or acai plus AET for 8 weeks. Exercise capacity, body fat, serum metabolites (triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein) and enzymes (lipase, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase), liver macrovesicular steatosis and liver lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances—TBARS) were evaluated. Objectives: The ethyl acetate fraction of bark and leaf part of Homalium zelanicum showed potential antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities. So, this study is aimed to evaluate antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities of hydroalcohol extract of Homalium zelanicum in carbon tetrachloride induced hepatotoxicity. Methods: To evaluate antioxidant potential, in vitro antioxidant assays e.g. DPPH, superoxide, hydroxyl and nitric oxide and ex vivo antioxidant assay e.g. cell based antioxidant protection in erythrocytes (CAP-e) were performed. Hepatoprotective activities were evaluated by estimating biochemical parameters such as serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin (TB) and total protein (TP). Background: Oxidative stress that leads to an imbalanced prooxidant/antioxidant status can be a critical factor affecting lung cancer etiopathology. The antioxidant system provides primary protection under oxidative stress. Objective: The purpose of the study was to investigate the serum antioxidant system status in brain metastatic and non-metastatic lung cancer patients with different cell types. Methods: In this prospective study, 33 patients with lung cancer metastasis (metastatic patient group), 36 lung cancer patients (non-metastatic patient group), and 25 healthy control groups were included. Enzymatic (Superoxide Dismutase, SOD; Glutathione Peroxidase, GPX; and Glutathione Reductase, GR) and non-enzymatic (Glutathione, GSH) antioxidant system biomarkers with Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS) levels were studied in the serum samples of the control and patient groups. The oxidative stress biomarkers were measured spectrophotometrically. Results: SOD activity increased though TBARS levels and GR activity decreased in both patient groups compared to the control. GPX activity increased only in the non-metastatic group. Antioxidant biomarkers varied between small cell and non-small cell group patients. GR activity and GSH levels were significantly higher in the non-metastatic group compared to the metastatic group. Correlations were also found between antioxidant parameters in the non-metastatic group. Conclusions: It was emphasized the imbalanced antioxidant system in the duration of the disease is related to not only cell type but also the metastatic structure. This is the preliminary study exhibiting the contribution of antioxidant imbalance in different subtypes with varied prognosis and behavior of lung cancer in the presence of brain metastasis. Therefore, oxidative stress biomarkers can serve as a useful tool to get information about the progression of lung cancer. Thus, it may provide fundamental data for further cancer research when considering the diagnosis of the disease.

The proline-rich oligopeptide from Bothrops jararaca snake venom, Bj-PRO-7a, promotes acute effects in blood pressure in hypertensive animals. However, the cardiac effects of this heptapeptide are completely unknown. Thus, we sought to evaluate whether the Bj-PRO-7a could protect against cardiac remodelling in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). SHR were treated with Bj-PRO-7a (71 nmol/kg/day, s.c.) or saline for 28 days. Wistar rats were used as control. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and heart rate (HR) were measured by tail-cuff plethysmography. Cardiomyocyte diameter and interstitial and perivascular fibrosis of the left ventricle (LV) were evaluated using Picrosirius staining. Immunofluorescence was used to detect collagen I and III. Fibroblast proliferation was assessed by immunohistochemistry to detect proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). Protein expression was assessed by western blot. The superoxide dismutase and catalase activities and the concentration of lipid peroxidation products were evaluated in the LV. The SBP and HR were not different between treated and non-treated SHR at the end of the treatment. However, Bj-PRO-7a attenuated the cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, deposition of interstitial and perivascular fibrosis and collagen I, and positive PCNA-labelled fibroblasts. This peptide also reduced the increased levels of TBARS, expression and activity of catalase, and activity of SOD in LV from SHR. Also, the Bj-PRO-7a increased the expression of metalloproteinases-2 in SHR hearts. These findings demonstrate that the Bj-PRO-7a reduced the pathological cardiac remodelling in a pressure-independent manner in hypertensive rats through mechanisms mediated by oxidative stress regulation.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of using 1%, 3% and 5% pomegranate seed powder (PSP) on model system chicken meat emulsion (CME) quality parameters. For this purpose, the properties of the emulsion samples prepared using different amounts of PSP were compared with the control group prepared with 70% chicken breast meat, 18% chicken skin, 10% water, 1.5% salt and 0.5% sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP). Chemical composition, pH, emulsion stability, water holding capacity, cooking yield, and color were analyzed in emulsion samples. TBARs and peroxide values of the samples were determined on days 0, 3, 5 and 7 during storage. Use of pomegranate seed powder in emulsion formulation resulted a decrease in b* and a* values. At the same time, with the addition of pomegranate seed powder, there was no difference in the protein values of the raw samples and the moisture, ash and pH values of the cooked samples. It was also observed that pH values, water holding capacity and cooking efficiency of emulsions increased with the increasing levels of PSP. Both peroxide and TBARs values were lower in emulsion samples formulated with PSP on 7 d compared to the control group.

We investigated the comparative physicochemical attributes, oxidative stability, and microbial characteristics of 28 days dry-aged meat in between boneless sirloin (gluteus medius) and bone-in T-bone steaks (infraspinatus) muscles from Korean Native Hanwoo Steer (KNHS). Results reveal that regardless of the muscles, dry-aging increased protein content and water-holding capacity (WHC) (p < 0.05). Meat from infraspinatus-aged muscle led to darker meat with higher pH values than un-aged meat (p < 0.05). However, fat content, CIE a*, and CIE b* remained unchanged in both muscles at aging. At aged meat, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) values from bone-in infraspinatus muscle was 2.5-fold higher than boneless gluteus medius muscle (p < 0.05). Dry-aging led to an increase in the contents of total unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and UFA/saturated fatty acids (SFA) in both muscles (p < 0.05). Furthermore, gluteus medius aged muscle concentrated with olic acid (C18:1) compared to infraspinatus aged muscle. Irrespective of the muscles, dry-aging enhanced the total free amino acids (FAAs) as well as tasty, and bitter amino acid contents whereas decreased the tasty/bitter amino acids (p < 0.05). Aromatic amino acid, tryptophan that converted to serotonin was 2-fold higher in boneless gluteus medius muscle than bone-in infraspinatus muscle at pre and post aging processes (p < 0.05). Aged Infraspinatus muscle increased total bacteria (p < 0.05) while no salmonella spp. was detected in both muscles. Taken together, our study confirms that 28 days dry-aging profiling the quality characteristics of boneless sirloin (gluteus medius) and bone-in T-bone steaks (infraspinatus) distinctly while gluteus medius aged steak performs better owing to oxidative stability and functional compounds than infraspinatus aged steak.

Background There has been an increasing interest in researching on the effects of extremely low-frequency magnetic fields on living systems. The mechanism of action of extremely low-frequency magnetic fields on organisms has not been established. One of the hypotheses is related to induce changes in oxidative balance. In this study, we measured the effects of chronic unpredictable mild stress induced-oxidative balance of rat’s brain exposed to extremely low-frequency magnetic fields. Methods A first experiment was conducted to find out if 14 days of chronic unpredictable mild stress caused oxidative unbalance in male Wistar rat’s brain. Catalase activity, reduced glutathione concentration, and lipoperoxidation were measured in cerebrum and cerebellum. In the second experiment, we investigate the effects of 7 days extremely low-frequency magnetic fields exposure on animals stressed and unstressed. Results The main results obtained were a significant increase in the catalase activity and reduced glutathione concentration on the cerebrum of animals where the chronic unpredictable mild stress were suspended at day 14 and then exposed 7 days to extremely low-frequency magnetic fields. Interestingly, the same treatment decreases the lipoperoxidation in the cerebrum. The stressed animals that received concomitant extremely low frequency magnetic fields exposure showed an oxidative status like stressed animals by 21 days. Thus, no changes were observed on the chronic unpredictable mild stress induced-oxidative damage in the rat’s cerebrum by the extremely low-frequency magnetic field exposure together with chronic unpredictable mild stress. Conclusions The extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field exposure can partially restore the cerebrum antioxidant system of previously stressed animals.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of galactomannan from Caesalpinia pulcherrima as a binding agent for the restructuring of fishes. The effect of a frozen (-18 °C) storage of 120 days on the physical-chemical and mechanical properties of fishes was evaluated, restructured fish products with transglutaminase were used as a control. Two fish restructuring formulations were developed: Galactomannan, with 0.2% galactomannan and 1.8% refined salt; and Control, with 0.5% transglutaminase. The analyses were carried out after 24 hours of refrigerated storage (4 °C), corresponding to time zero, and after 30, 60, 90, and 120 days of frozen (-18 °C) storage. The use of galactomannan resulted in a higher pH, and lower total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), with no differences from zero to 120-day storage times for the L*, a*, and b* coordinates. Galactomannan easily bounds to hydrogen, enabling the obtaining restructured fish products with lower expressible water content and less weight losses by cooking, important characteristics for the acceptance of products that denote softness and succulence. Contrastingly, this easy bound to water molecules resulted in a lower hardness, cohesiveness, and elasticity, and higher adhesivity when compared to the control. The results showed the viability of using galactomannan to restructure fishes during frozen storage. RESUMO Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a utilização da galactomanana de Caesalpinia pulcherrima como agente ligante na reestruturação de pescado, examinando as propriedades físico-químicas e mecânicas para determinar o efeito do armazenamento congelamento−18 °C durante 120 dias, utilizando como controle o reestruturado de pescado feito com transglutaminase. Foram desenvolvidas duas formulações de reestruturados sendo a Gal com 0.2% de galactomanana e 1.8% de sal refinado e o Controle com 0.5% de transglutaminase. As análises foram realizadas após 24 horas de armazenamento refrigerado (4 °C) correspondente ao tempo zero e depois aos 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias de armazenamento congelado a−18 °C. Foi observado ao longo do período estudado que a incorporação de galactomanana registrou um aumento no pH, menores valores para as bases voláteis totais (N-BVT) e substâncias reativas ao ácido tiobarbitúrico (TBARS), além de não manifestarem mudanças significativas, entre os tempos zero e 120 dias, nas coordenadas L*, a* e b*. A facilidade da galactomanana em realizar ligações hidrogênio permitiram obter reestruturados com menor teor de água expressível e reduzida perda de peso por cocção, sendo estas características importantes para aceitação dos produtos por proporcionarem maciez e suculência. Por outro lado, está maior facilidade de ligação com a água contribuiu para os menores valores de dureza e coesividade, além de baixa elasticidade e maior adesividade em relação ao controle. Os resultados foram importantes e demonstraram a viabilidade da galactomanana na reestruturação de pescado durante o armazenamento congelado.

This investigation was done to assess the role of abscisic acid (ABA, 25 µM) and/or nitrogen (N, 10 mM) in the alleviation of salinity (NaCl, 100 mM)-induced reduction in photosynthetic activity and growth, N and sulfur (S) assimilation of mustard (Brassica juncea L.) cv. RH0-749. Salinity treatment caused oxidative stress and significantly elevated the content of both H2O2 and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and impaired photosynthetic activity and growth, but increased the content of nitrogenous osmolyte proline and the activity of antioxidant enzymes involved in the metabolism of reactive oxygen species. The application of 25 µM ABA under a controlled condition negatively affected photosynthesis and growth. However, ABA, when combined with N, minimized oxidative stress and mitigated the salinity-inhibited effects by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, SOD, glutathione reductase, GR, ascorbate peroxidase, APX) and proline content. Overall, the supplementation of 10 mM N combined with 25 µM ABA provides an important strategy for enhancing the photosynthetic potential of B. juncea under saline conditions.

This study characterized the changes in the microbiological, physicochemical properties of Suan rou during fermentation via three different techniques (Technique A is a traditional production process. Based on technique A, technique B adds a total of 200 g of sucrose to the thinly sliced meat, and technique C changes the amount of salt in the thinly sliced meat to 200 grams.). Compared to batch A, the samples from batches B and C featured more rapid reduction in pH and generated more TA. Myofibrillar proteins in batches B and C showed higher degradation rate, and several low‐molecular‐weight metabolites were determined on the basis of sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS‐PAGE) gel lanes. The contents of thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) and total volatile base nitrogen (TVB‐N) and the growth of spoilage bacteria and pathogens were suppressed in the three batches. A relatively compatible acid–salinity proportion was presented in the Suan rou of batches A and B compared with that of batch C. The results show that the Suan rou made by B technology was more palatable acid flavor and abundant nutrition., Suan rou is a uniquely tasty and highly safe meat product made by traditional natural fermentation and deeply favored by local consumers. This study characterized the changes in the microbiological and physicochemical properties of Suan rou during fermentation via three different techniques (i.e., A, B, and C). These results show that the Suan rou made by B technology had the most palatable acid flavor and abundant nutrition among the three different batches of Suan rou.

Background. Various modes of transport are among the main sources of environmental pollution with heavy metals and other pollutants. Bryophytes are known to accumulate heavy metals; however, metabolic changes in mosses under conditions of metal accumulation have not been extensively studied. The aim of this article was to analyze the accumulation of heavy metals, the process of lipid peroxidation (LPO) and the activity of enzymes of the antioxidant system in Didymodon rigidulus Hedw. moss collected in urban areas with an intense load created by road and railway transport. Materials and Methods. Gametophyte shoots were collected at three sampling sites in the city of Lviv (Ukraine). Site 1 was selected in a park zone, which was considered a control one; sites 2 and 3 were selected in areas with heavy road and rail traffic, respectively. Concentrations of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in the moss material were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The levels of LPO products, namely lipid hydroperoxides and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), as well as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities, were determined by standard methods. The results were processed using the methods of variation statistics. Results. Moss D. rigidulus growing in the park area (site 1) accumulated metals in the following order of decreasing concentration: Zn> Cr> Ni> Pb. Gametophyte shoots of D. rigidulus collected at site 2 accumulated higher levels of Pb, Zn and Ni (by 2.27, 1.78 and 1.45 times, respectively), and at site 3, higher levels of Pb and Zn (by 1.8 and 1.67 times, respectively) compared to gametophytes collected in the park zone. In the moss samples from these sites, no significant differences in the Cr content were found as compared to the control. Concentration of lipid hydroperoxides in the moss sampled at sites 2 and 3 was 4.26 and 3.75 times higher, respectively, compared to the control, and TBARS production was more intense in plant material from site 2 than from the control site. SOD and catalase activities were considerably increased in D. rigidulus moss from site 2 compared with those from the control area; however, the activity of both enzymes in the moss samples from site 3 did not significantly exceed the control levels. Conclusions. Both road and rail traffic loads contribute to the accumulation of heavy metals, especially Zn and Pb, in D. rigidulus moss growing in the surrounding areas. Under such conditions, LPO process is stimulated, which is more pronounced in moss growing in area with heavy road traffic. The increased activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD and catalase) in moss growing in this area can play an important role in protecting bryophyte cells against metal-induced oxidative stress under conditions of intense metal accumulation. Although bacterial contamination of ejaculates may cause difficulties in cattle reproduction, standard protocols for a routine microbiological analysis of bovine semen are still missing. Understanding of the mechanisms of bacterial damage to spermatozoa may contribute to the prevention and management of bacteriospermia in the future. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate bacterial profiles of fresh bovine ejaculates (n = 30), while at the same time we focused on assessing the relationships between bacteriospermia and selected sperm quality parameters as well as an array of oxidative stress and inflammatory markers. The samples were divided into three quality groups according to the sperm motility: Excellent (EX) - over 90% > Good (GO) - between 89% and 80% > Moderate (MO) - under 80%. The results showed a significant increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in the GO group when compared to the EX group. In the MO group, a deterioration of almost all quality parameters was observed when compared to the EX group. In particular, sperm motility, mitochondrial membrane potential, ROS production and IL-6 concentration exhibited a significant decline. Pearson correlation analysis revealed positive associations among bacterial load and the presence of leukocytes in semen (r = 0.965), malondialdehyde concentration (r = 0.816) and DNA fragmentation (r = 0.784). MALDI-TOF MS Biotyper analysis showed a prevalence of the Staphylococcus genus. The quantification of bacterial colonies revealed a significantly increased (P < 0.01) bacterial load in the MO group when compared with the EX as well as the GO group. Overall, our results suggest that sperm quality may be affected by both, bacterial composition, and bacterial load. SummaryThe aim of this study was to evaluate follicular development, morphological integrity, and antioxidant potential of preantral ovarian follicles from Bos taurus indicus females grown in vitro with alpha-lipoic acid. Ovaries (n = 24) of Bos taurus indicus (n = 12) females were collected during slaughter and fragmented. A randomly obtained fragment from each pair of ovaries was fixed in Bouin (non-cultivated control; D0). These fragments were intended for classical histology (morphology and evaluation of follicular growth), and a fragment from each pair of ovaries was frozen at −80°C (non-cultivated control; D0), and assigned for analysis of oxidative stress [thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP)]. The remaining fragments were cultured in vitro for 6 (D6) or 12 (D12) days, containing only minimum essential medium (MEM) or MEM supplemented with alpha-lipoic acid (50, 100, or 250 ng/ml), on an extracellular matrix of agarose gel, in an oven at 38.5ºC. Every 2 days, 100% of the culture medium was replaced. Supplementation with 100 ng/ml was effective for maintaining follicular integrity after 6 days of culture (primordial: 51.28%; development: 36.88%; P < 0.0001). There was no difference (P > 0.05) between treatments compared with the non-cultivated control treatment (D0), using the NBT and TBARS assays. Therefore, supplementation of the in vitro culture medium of bovine preantral ovarian follicles with a concentration of 100 ng/ml of alpha-lipoic acid at 6 days of culture was effective for maintaining follicular integrity and, after 6 days, maintaining stable levels of reactive oxygen species.

Effect of active pretreatment of tomato pectin and paste on physicochemical, textural, microstructure and organoleptic attributes of chicken sausage during deep-fat frying was investigated in this study. Compared with the control sample, pectin and tomato paste (TP) treatments decreased the oil uptake and moisture loss of deep-fried chicken sausage by 13.28% and 10.16, respectively. Adding pectin along with tomato paste to chicken sausage formulation decreased chewiness and springiness forces to 21.36 N and 0.70, respectively. Using tomato paste and pectin increased the cohesiveness (9.1%) and softness (19.11%) of the tissue. The deep-fried sausage samples were analyzed for PV (peroxide value), TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) and sensory attributes. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of conditioned mediumderived from human adipose mesenchymal stem cells (CM-hADSCs) on C28I2 chondrocytesagainst oxidative stress and mitochondrial apoptosis induced by high glucose (HG).Methods: C28I2 cells were pre-treated with CM-hADSCs for 24 hours followed by HG exposure(75 mM) for 48 hours. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of zein coating (Z) impregnated with ginger extract (GE) and Pimpinella anisum essential oil (AEO) on microbial, chemical and sensory characteristics of beef samples packaged in modified atmosphere (MAP). The treatments were assessed during refrigerated storage for 20 days. GC-MS analysis exhibited that anethole (78.39%) was the dominant component of GE. Results indicated that meat treatment with zein coating containing GE 3% and AEO, resulted in the highest reduction rate of mesophilic bacteria (4.13 log CFU/g), lactic acid bacteria (2.68 log CFU/g), Enterobacteriaceae (3.84 log CFU/g), Pseudomonas spp. (2.74 log CFU/g), and yeasts–molds (1.99 log CFU/g) as compared to the untreated (control) samples. Moreover, the antimicrobial activity of GE enhanced with increasing the concentration and a synergistic effect was observed when combined with AEO. Chemical properties including total volatile nitrogen, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), peroxide value (PV) and pH were notably lower in all treated meats compared to control samples. However, PV and TBARS were higher in MAP only treated meats. Regarding organoleptic properties, Z-GE 3%-A was mostly acceptable the panelists until the last day of experiment. Our findings indicate the potential of zein edible coating incorporated with GE and AEO in reducing the deterioration of fresh beef and improving its shelf life under MAP conditions.

Tungsten (W) and its compounds have emerged as a relatively new area of environmental health concern in the last decade. Tungsten is environmentally benign due to its increasing use in armour-piercing munitions and as a replacement for lead in other ammunition. It has also been identified in various hazardous waste sites and therefore been proposed for inclusion in the Environmental Protection Agency National Priorities List. The major objective of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of orally administered monoisoamyl 2, 3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (MiADMSA) against tungstate induced oxidative injury in blood, liver and kidneys of male Wistar rats. MiADMSA, a thiol chelator has gained wide recognition recently as a future chelating drug of choice specifically for arsenic and was chosen for this study as tungstate ions too have an affinity toward the -SH group thus, being less bioavailable in the body. We determined the effects of MiADMSA (50 mg/kg, p.o.) against sodium tungstate (500 ppm in drinking water, daily for 28 days) induced biochemical changes indicative of oxidative stress in blood, and other soft tissues of of male Wistar rats. Tungsten exposure led to an increased levels of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in liver, kidney, spleen and blood accompanied also by an increase in TBARS levels. The GSH: GSSG ratio also showed a decrease on sodium tungstate intoxication. Treatment with MiADMSA restored most of the sodium tungstate-induced alterations in the biomarkers suggestive of oxidative stress. These preliminary results led us to conclude that sub-acute exposure to tungstate-induced oxidative stress could be effectively reduced by the administration of MiADMSA and thus might be a promising antidote for studying in detail its efficacy in reducing body tungstate burden and its excretion post tungstate exposure.

Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is an abundant environmental pollutant that can generate free radicals and induce oxidative stress in different human and animal organs like the kidney, lung, brain, and spleen, causing toxicity. The present study evaluated the alleviative mechanism of the isolated polyphenolic fraction from seedless (pulp and skin) black Vitis vinifera (VVPF) on systemic oxidative and necroinflammatory stress in CCl4-intoxicated rats. Here, we found that the administration of VVPF to CCl4-intoxicated rats for ten days was obviously ameliorated the CCl4-induced systemic elevation in ROS, NO and TBARS levels, as well as MPO activity. Also, it upregulated the cellular activities of the enzymatic (SOD, and GPx) and non-enzymatic (TAC and GSH) antioxidants. Furthermore, the gene expression of the ROS-related necroinflammatory mediators (NF-κB, iNOS, COX-2, and TNF-α) in the kidney, brain, and spleen, as well as IL-1β, and IL-8 in the lung were greatly restored. The histopathological studies confirmed these biochemical results and showed a noticeable enhancing effect in the architecture of the studied organs after VVPF intake. Thus, this study indicated that VVPF had an alleviative effect on CCl4-induced necroinflammation and oxidative stress in rat kidney, lung, brain, and spleen via controlling the ROS/NF-κB pathway.

Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of adding oregano (Origanum syriacum L.) and germander (Teucrium polium L.) to poultry diets individually and/or in combination: i) on cooked chicken meat quality and storage stability, ii) to compare this effect with those of the synthetic antioxidant butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and with the normal basic diet (Control: without supplements).Methods: Broilers (140 birds) were raised for 21 days and then equally divided into five different treatment groups of 28 birds each. The dietary treatments were as follows: i) control; ii) germander (GER, 1.5%); iii) oregano (ORE, 2.5%); iv) combination of GER and ORE (CM, 1.5%, and 2.5%); v) BHA (0.02%). Meat patties from the five treatments were prepared, cooked, and stored at 4°C prior to analysis. During storage, samples were measured for thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and total carbonyl levels at 0, 4, and 7 days. In addition, cooked thigh meat was prepared separately to evaluate cooking loss and sensory attributes.Results: The CM dietary treatment showed the highest antioxidant effect, with decreasing TBARS values (breast and thigh meat) throughout the storage time (4 to 7 days). Furthermore, ORE showed a higher antioxidant effect, decreasing the rancidity development (TBARS values), compared to the GER during the storage period (days 0 to 7). The anticarbonyl effect of the CM supplement was the highest among all treatments from day 0 to 7. Generally, the antioxidant effect of GER was lower compared to that of ORE and BHA alone. The CM treatment most significantly decreased off-odor and rancidity development, with the lowest oxidation odor scores.Conclusion: The results indicate that the combination of oregano and germander in the diet of boilers improves meat quality and prolongs shelf life.

Chicken meat is highly susceptible to microbial and chemical spoilage due to its high moisture and protein content. The use of edible coatings contains herbal extracts with antioxidant and antibacterial properties that help to extend the shelf life of meat products. In this study, the effect of chitosan coating (2%) and Nepeta pogonosperma extract (NPe) (0.2% and 0.6%) and their combination on chemical properties (pH, peroxide value (PV), thiobarbituric acid index (TBARS), total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB‐N)) and microbial (aerobic mesophilic and psychrotrophic microorganisms, lactic acid bacteria, Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas sp.) of chicken fillets were studied over a 12‐day refrigerated storage period compared to the control sample. The results of NPe DPPH radical scavenging activity (DRSA) showed that IC50 and total phenolic contents values were 94.65 μg/ml and 113.53 mg GAE/g extract, respectively. The present study was conducted to determine the antimicrobial and antioxidant attributes of chitosan (CH) incorporated with Berberis vulgaris extract (BE) and Mentha pulegium essential oil (MEO) on the shelf life of turkey breast meat packaged with modified atmosphere packaging (MAP: 80% CO2 and 20% N2) at refrigerated temperature. The alterations in thiobarbituric acid value (TBARS), total volatile base nitrogen (TVBN), pH, color, odor, texture, and taste, as physico-chemical and sensorial factors, were investigated. In addition, lactic acid bacteria (LAB), Enterobacteriaceae, yeasts–molds, Pseudomonas spp., and total viable counts (TVC) for microbial situation were monitored during 25 days of storage. The outcomes of microbial counts and lipid oxidation revealed a significantly lower count and oxidation level in CH-BE 2%-M and CH-BE 4%-M treatments on the 25th day of storage. The present study aimed to investigate the protective role of capsaicin in a rat model of 2,3,7,8-tetracholorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD)-induced toxicity. Exposure to TCDD which is an environmental toxicant causes severe toxic effects in the animal and human tissues. Therefore, the potential protective effect of capsaicin in TCDD-induced organ damage was investigated in rats by measuring thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) level, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and glutathione (GSH) level in the heart, liver, and kidney tissues for oxidant/antioxidant balance. Thirty-two healthy adults (250-300 g weight and 3-4 months old) male Wistar albino rats were randomly distributed into four equal groups (n = 8): Control, CAP, TCDD, TCDD + CAP. A dose of 2 mu g/kg TCDD or a dose of 25 mg/kg capsaicin were dissolved in corn oil and orally administered to the rats for 30 days. The results indicated that TCDD-induced oxidative stress by increasing the level of TBARS and by decreasing the levels of GSH, and SOD activity in the tissues of rats. However, capsaicin treatment was significantly decreased TBARS levels and was significantly increased GSH level and SOD activity (p < 0.05). In addition, capsaicin (25 mg/kg) significantly attenuated TCDD-induced histopathological alteration associated with oxidative stress in the heart, liver, and kidney tissues (p < 0.05). Cantharis is a homeopathic remedy used for treating burn injuries in humans. The objective is to see whether potentized Cantharis could ameliorate heat stress in germinating seeds of cowpea. Methodology Seeds, imbibed in water overnight, were divided into four groups (n=50/group): Control I (Water 200c), Control II (Ethanol 200c), treated with Cantharis 200c and untreated and unstressed. Water soaked seeds were dipped in control/drug solution for 5 min and then washed. Control II and Cantharis 200c were diluted with water 1:1000 to minimize the ethanol effect. Except the fourth group, all other groups were subjected to heat stress (450C for 8 hours). All the groups were allowed to germinate for 5 days in germination chamber at 25 ± 20C. Groups 1 and 2 (Control I and II) served as systematic negative controls throughout the experiment. Ten independent replications were performed for each group in parallel. BACKGROUND: Chronic hypercholesterolemia is an important predisposing factor of cardiovascular diseases. The underlying process is commonly associated with oxidative stress. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the the effects of tablet preparation which contains both purple sweet potato extract (PSPE) and red fruit extract (RFE) against oxidative stress and cholesterol level in vivo. METHODS: This study used a pre and post-test control group design. Wistar male rats were randomized into 4 groups consisting 7 rats each. The groups were control group, red fruit extract 0.4 cc/head/day (RFE group), purple sweet potato extract 200mg/head/day (PSPE group), and RFE 0,2 cc + PSPE 200 mg/head/day (RFE+PSPE group). All groups were given high cholesterol diet for 4 weeks. Assay for MDA, SOD, and cholesterol were using TBARS assay and colorimetric test. The result then analyzed with T-test and One Way Anova. RESULTS: PSPE or RFE alone may prevent the increase of blood cholesterol level and oxidative stress in rats with high-cholesterol diet.
