Ammonium persulfate (APS), an oxidizing agent used in hair products, manufacturing, and pool/spa water, can cause skin reactions, including allergic contact dermatitis.To characterize positive patch test reactions to APS (2.5% petrolatum).Retrospective analysis of patients tested to the North American Contact Dermatitis Group screening series from 2015 to 2018.Of 10,526 patients, 193 (1.8%) had positive patch test reactions to APS. Compared with APS-negative patients, APS-positive patients were significantly more likely to be male (43.2% vs 28.0%; P .0001); have primary hand dermatitis (30.2% vs 22.0%; P = .0064), scattered generalized dermatitis (25.5% vs 17.9%; P = .0064), or trunk dermatitis (8.9% vs 4.9%; P = .0123); and have dermatitis that is occupationally related (22.2% vs 10.9%; P .0001). More than half of the APS-positive reactions were currently relevant (57.0%); 19 (9.8%) were related to occupation, especially hairdressers (68.4%). Swimming pools/spas (23.3%) and hair care products (19.2%) were the most common sources of APS.Immediate reactions and follow-up testing were not captured.The proportion of patients positive to APS was 1.8%. APS positivity was significantly associated with male sex and hand dermatitis. Swimming pool/spa chemicals were important sources of APS exposure.

Mother Nature is an indispensable source of bioactive natural products. Bioactive secondary metabolites have played a crucial role in the drug development and discovery process; mainly, anticancer and antibiotic molecules are extensively enriched with molecules of natural origin. Anthocyanins are water-soluble secondary metabolites found in most species in the plant domain, especially flowers, fruits, and tubers. These natural vacuolar pigments belong to the chemical class of phenolic moieties, which are responsible for the shiny orange, red, blue, pink, and violet colors in the fruits, flowers, and vegetables. Chemically, anthocyanins comprise a core structure in the form of flavylium cation or 2-phenylbenzopyrylium, and these natural colorants are polyhydroxy and polymethoxy analouges of this flavylium cation and can have sugar moieties or acylated groups linked at different positions. Currently, these molecules have raised a growing interest because of their wide range of colors, innocuous and beneficial health effects, and commercial application in functional foods, nutraceuticals, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. However, interest in anthocyanin derivatives has noticeably enhanced in recent years due to their higher stability, improved bioavailability in biological matrices, and better use in food matrices and cosmetic products. Due to the enormous potential of natural anthocyanins and their derivatives, this review tries to cover syntheses of anthocyanins and their analogues, chemical derivatization of anthocyanins, and anticancer activities, such as breast, colorectal, leukemia, lung, prostate, and skin cancer of anthocyanins efficiently.

BackgroundEnvironmental water samples are increasingly recognised as an important reservoir of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and next generation sequencing (NGS) offer a potentially inclusive surveillance platform for a wide range of AMR genes. However, molecular methods are dependent upon the extraction of DNA of high yield and quality. Current options for DNA extraction from complex environmental matrices for downstream molecular applications are either expensive or low yielding. We present here a novel magnetic bead-based DNA extraction method, for the detection of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) from river water in Malawi, named MagnaExtract. MethodsMagnaExtract involves initial filtration of 250ml freshwater, followed by an overnight incubation of the filter in 15ml buffered peptone water (BPW), common procedure in microbiology laboratories. 200{micro}l is then taken for a boil (95{degrees}C) and spin step and mixed with magnetic beads to bind DNA. Following washes with ethanol, the DNA is eluted in nuclease-free water. To determine the effectiveness of this method, 98 freshwater samples were collected from two rivers in Southern Malawi, and DNA was isolated using the MagnaExtract method, two commercial Qiagen (Germany) kits; PowerWater and DNeasy Blood and tissue, alongside a boil and spin of BPW, and a boil and spin from bacterial isolate grown on agar media. All samples were screened with a high-resolution melt (HRM) PCR panel previously validated for the detection of third generation cephalosporin and carbapenem ARGs. We compared the DNA yield obtained using all extraction methods, as well as the identification of each ARG. ResultsDNA yield using MagnaExtract was statistically greater than both boil and spin methods and DNeasy Blood & Tissue (Qiagen, Germany). DNA yield was slightly lower than using PowerWater (Qiagen) but the difference was not statistically significant. MagnaExtract was the only method to identify ARGs in all 98 water samples compared with PowerWater (n=82), DNeasy (n=95) boilate of BPW (n=75) and boilate of bacterial isolate (n=87). The most commonly detected ARG was OXA-48 (n=93). In addition, we found overnight incubation in non-selective enrichment broth (BPW) to promote the growth of bacteria harbouring extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) genes and reduction in the detection of carbapenemase genes. ConclusionThe MagnaExtract approach offers a simple, affordable, high yielding DNA extraction method for the detection of ARGs isolated from river water samples.

Aim and Objective: A high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for determining hypaphorine, a potential agent for treating osteoclast- based bone loss, was developed and validated in rat plasma. Materials and Methods: Plasma samples were pretreated by the protein precipitation. Chromatographic separation was performed using an Inertsil ODS-3 column (50 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 μm). The mobile phase consisted of water (containing 0.1% formic acid) and acetonitrile in a gradient mode at a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min. The transitions from protonated precursor ion [M + H]+ to the particular daughter ion were acquired using selected reaction monitoring (SRM). The mass transitions of hypaphorine and IS were found to be 247 → 188 and m/z 219 → 188, respectively. The method was validated in terms of selectivity, linearity, accuracy and precision, extraction recovery and matrix effect, stability, and carryover. Results: It showed good linearity over the range of 1-2000 ng/mL (R2 = 0.9978). The intra-batch accuracy was within 93.95-105.81%, and the precision was within 4.92-11.53%. The inter-batch accuracy was within 96.18-100.39% with a precision of 6.22-11.23%. The extraction recovery and matrix factors were acceptable. Conclusion: The simple and rapid method was successfully applied to the pharmacokinetic study in rats following oral administration of hypaphorine at the doses of 0.5, 1.5, and 4.5 mg/kg.

Statement of problem A vinegar-hydrogen peroxide mixture has been reported to be effective in eliminating Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus from acrylic resin, and its action has been reported to be comparable with that of sodium hypochlorite or peracetic acid. However, the effects of this mixture on cobalt-chromium alloys remain unknown. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the surface roughness, Knoop microhardness, surface free energy, and wettability of a cobalt-chromium alloy when exposed to a vinegar-hydrogen peroxide mixture. Material and methods Fifty specimens of cobalt-chromium alloy were fabricated and immersed for 900 minutes, simulating 3 months of a daily 10-minute immersion in the following chemical agents (n=10): distilled water (W); 0.5% sodium hypochlorite (H); 3% hydrogen peroxide and water dilution in 1:1 ratio (HP); white-wine vinegar and water dilution in 1:1 ratio (V); and vinegar and hydrogen peroxide mixture in 1:1 ratio (VHP). Surface roughness, Knoop microhardness, surface free energy, and wettability were measured with single blinding before and after immersions. Data were statistically analyzed by using 2-way repeated measures ANOVA (α=.05). Results The vinegar-hydrogen peroxide mixture did not affect the surface roughness or Knoop microhardness. However, 0.5% sodium hypochlorite significantly increased the roughness and decreased microhardness. Surface free energy and wettability increased after immersions, regardless of the types of solution. Conclusions Immersion in a vinegar-hydrogen peroxide mixture did not affect the surface characteristics of a cobalt-chromium alloy.

Plastic – derived Bisphenol A (BPA) contaminated sewages in Trivandrum, Kerala, India are mosquito breeding sites. After summer rain, BPA in the stagnant water samples ranged between 0.86 and 1.14ppm. 1.0 ppm BPA is considered as environmentally relevant concentration. Present study revealed that BPA is a developmental agonist of Culex quinquefasciatus. Embryonic and larval development are shortened by BPA but pupal development is unaffected. Under the atmospheric temperature of 26 to 310C lifecycle was completed within 312 hours but during summer it was completed within 278 hours, meanwhile atmospheric temperature ranged between 30 and 370C. Reduction in the duration of development due to BPA was 50 to 70 hours during summer and 60 to 80 hours in other seasons. Larval – pupal stadium of the mosquito has three surges of 20-hydroxy ecdysone(20-HE), at 24,32 and 48th hour of the 4th instar. BPA resulted dose-dependent advancement of 20-HE peaks, Phospholipase A2 induction and expression of Ecdysone receptor EcRA and Ecdysone inducible gene E75A, which culminated in early pupation. Adults emerging from 1.0 ppm BPA treatment did not show significant difference in sanguivory and fecundity compared to control but pupae developed in 2 and 4 ppm BPA were significantly small.

Background: The marine algae are considered a diverse source of bioactive compounds. Many active compounds have been isolated from algae and show good biological activities. Materials and Methods: The aim of this study is to detect the antiviral and anticancer activities in some extracts of marine algae. Extraction, purification and identification of some marine algae common in Egypt were conducted. Extraction of Ulva lactuca, Sargassum dentifolium, and Cystoseiara myrica was conducted. A sequence of extractions, including extraction by ethanol, boiling water, hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide were carried out. The obtained extracts were evaluated for their antitumour and antiviral activities against liver tumour cells, brain tumour cell lines, measles virus, mumps virus and hepatitis B virus (HBV). The extracts of the best activities were subjected for purification by size exclusion chromatography and anion exchange chromatography for ethanolic extracts or precipitation by cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) then by size exclusion chromatography and anion exchange chromatography for aqueous extracts. Separation by GLS/MS was performed. The structures of the active compounds have been identified through different chemical analyses, including sugar analysis, configurational analysis, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), infrared spectroscopy (IR), Gas-Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GLC-MS) and 1H,13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) at ZV. Results: The active compounds from the water extracts have been identified mainly as polysaccharides and sulphated polysaccharides. The antitumour and the antiviral activities of ethanolic extracts are attributable to compound identified as Ethyl Palmitate. These natural compounds did not show cytotoxic effect. Conclusion: These outputs could be preliminary for further biological studies aiming to therapeutic application.

Aims This study examined the effects of water activity (aw), ammonia and Corynebacterium urealyticum on the survival of Salmonella Typhimurium in sterile poultry litter. Methods and Results Sterile poultry litter inoculated with S. Typhimurium was adjusted to pH 9.0, various aw levels (0.84, 0.92 and 0.96), and total ammonia nitrogen levels were increased either by the addition of ammonium sulphate or C. urealyticum inoculation with 1% urea added. All litter treatments were incubated at 30°C and sampled daily for five days. Similar results were observed at each aw level in both experiments. At 0.84 and 0.92 aw, S. Typhimurium populations in litter fell below 1 log CFU g−1 within 5 days, with no significant differences between the controls and increased ammonia treatments. At 0.96 aw, Salmonella populations treated with increased ammonia levels were significantly lower than control treatments on days 1–5. Conclusions This study showed that C. urealyticum can produce ammonia in litter at higher aw levels with sufficient available urea and that the antimicrobial efficacy of ammonia is dependent on high aw (~0.96) in litter. Significance and Impact of the Study These results provide insights into the production of ammonia in litter, its antimicrobial efficacy in litter and the importance of aw in this interaction.

Hypothesis Complex fluids comprising polymers and surfactants exhibit interesting properties which depend on the overall composition and solvent quality. The ultimate determinants of the macroscopic properties are the nano-scale association domains. Hence it is important to ascertain the structure and composition of the domains, and how they respond to the overall composition. Experiments The structure and composition of mixed micelles formed in aqueous solution between poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) block copolymers (Pluronics or Poloxamers) and the ionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) are determined from an analysis of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) intensity data obtained at different contrasts. Different polymers and concentrations have been probed. Findings The SDS + Pluronic mixed micelles include polymer and some water in the micelle core that is formed primarily by alkyl chains. This is different than what was previously reported, but is consistent with a variety of experimental observations. This is the first report on the structure of SDS + Pluronic P123 (EO19PO69EO19) assemblies. The effects on the mixed micelle structure and composition of the surfactant concentration and the polymer hydrophobicity are discussed here in the context of interactions between the different components.

Aims Copper ion is widespread in wastewater and threatens the condition and human health. Micro-organisms have unique advantages to remove heavy-metal ions from water, but are rarely reported in the removal of copper ion. This aims to develop micro-organisms that can remove copper ion in water, characterize their properties and analyse their potential application in practice. Methods and Results Sewage sludge was used as the source to isolate wild bacteria that can remove copper ion in water. The most efficient strain was screened out from 23 obtained isolates, identified as Bacillus pseudomycoides and coded as C6. The properties of C6 in the removal of copper ion in water were investigated in the aspects of reaction conditions, reaction groups, reaction dynamic and the application in oat planting. The reaction at pH 7 within 10 min yielded the highest removal rate of copper ion, 83%. The presence of lead ion in the reaction system could promote the removal rate of copper ion. Carboxyl groups and amidogen of C6 biomass were mainly involved in the removal of copper ion. The removal of copper ion was in accord with single-layer adsorption and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. In application, C6 biomass reduced the copper content in the oat seedlings grown in copper ion containing water by more than seven times. Conclusions B. pseudomycoides C6 can efficiently remove copper ion in water and inhibit it from entering plants. Significance and Impact of Study This is the first time to report the capability of B. pseudomycoides to remove copper ion in water, which is also more efficient than the currently reported chemical and biological methods.

At present, the cyanide gold extraction process is still the main technology for gold production. Generated cyanide tailings containing highly toxic substances exhibit potential environmental risks. These tailings are in urgent need of purification treatment, especially after being classified as hazardous waste. In this study, the impacts of elution methods, operating time, tailings/water ratios, reagent types on the elution rates of cyanide were investigated. Furthermore, the composite elution method developed in this research was extended for engineering. Results showed that the optimum elution conditions were determined to be: stirring elution, tailings/water ratio (M/V; 1:1) and operating time (10-20 min). Besides, 4 reagents (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, cyclodextrin, sodium silicate and calcium hydroxide) were selected from four categories of 21 reagents for further composite elution. The cyanide elution rate was the highest (90.7%±0.1%) while the molar ratio of these 4 reagents was 5:2:2:1. Moreover, the combination of reagent elution and positive pressure filtration improved the elution efficiency of cyanide (92.6%±0.8%). And the cyanide content in the toxic leaching solution was lower than the standard value (5.0 mg/L). Furthermore, the composite elution method developed in this study was also extended for engineering. The concentration of cyanide in the leachate was5.0 mg/L, and was stable during 189 days of detection. Notably, the effluent can be reused directly, or reused after further treatment. The zero discharge of effluents and solid wastes was realized in the processes. The above results provided supports for the engineering treatment of cyanide tailings.

Atmospheric organic acids (OAs) are expected to enhance methanesulfonic acid (MSA)-driven new particle formation (NPF). However, the exact role of OAs in MSA-driven NPF remains unclear. Here, we employed a two-step strategy to probe the role of OAs in MSA–methylamine (MA) NPF. Initially, we evaluated the enhancing potential of 12 commonly detected OAs in ternary MA–MSA–OA cluster formation by considering the formation free energies of the (MSA)1(MA)1(OA)1 clusters and the atmospheric concentrations of the OAs. It was found that formic acid (ForA) has the highest potential to stabilize the MA–MSA clusters. The high enhancing potential of ForA results from its acidity, structural factors such as no intramolecular H bonds, and high atmospheric abundance. The second step is to extend the MSA–MA–ForA system to larger cluster sizes. The results indicate that ForA can indeed enhance MSA–MA NPF at atmospheric conditions (the upper limited temperature is 258.15 K), indicating that ForA might have an important role in MSA-driven NPF. The enhancing effect of ForA is mainly caused by an increased formation of the (MSA)2(MA)1 cluster, which is involved in the pathway of binary MSA–MA nucleation. Hence, our results indicate that OAs might be required to facilitate MSA-driven NPF in the atmosphere.

Excess fluoride in water poses a threat to ecology and human health, which has attracted global attention. In this study, a series of lanthanum-based metal–organic frameworks (La-MOFs) were synthesized by varying the organic ligands (i.e., terephthalic acid (BDC), trimesic acid (BTC), biphenyl-4,4-dicarboxylic acid (BPDC), 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (BHTA), and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (PMA)) to control the microscopic structure of the MOFs and subsequently apply them for the removal of fluoride in water. The maximum capture capacities of La-BTC, La-BPDC, La-BHTA, La-PMA, and La-BDC at 298 K are 105.2, 125.9, 145.5, 158.9, and 171.7 mg g−1, respectively. The adsorption capacity is greater than most reported adsorbents. The adsorption isotherms of La-MOFs for fluoride are well fit to the Langmuir isotherm model. In addition, the adsorption kinetics of La-BTC, La-BPDC, La-BHTA, La-PMA, and La-BDC follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the kinetic rate-limiting step of adsorption is chemical adsorption. Thermodynamics revealed that temperature is favorable for the adsorption of fluoride. Meanwhile, La-BTC, La-BPDC, La-BHTA, La-PMA, and La-BDC are suitable for the removal of fluoride in a relatively wide pH range (4.0–9.0). Simultaneously, from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange are identified as the main action mechanisms for the adsorption of fluoride of La-MOFs. The prepared La-MOFs are used as efficient adsorbents for removal of fluoride in actual water, indicating that they have great potential in removing fluoride in real and complex environmental water. This work provides a new strategy for designing adsorbents with adjustable microstructure and expected function to effectively recover fluorosis in water.

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been used in solvents for proteins in many applications, including biotechnology, pharmaceutics, and medicine due to their tunable physicochemical and biological properties. Protein aggregation is often undesirable, and predominantly occurs during bioprocesses, while the aggregation process can be reversible or irreversible and the aggregates formed can be native/non-native and soluble/insoluble. Recent studies have clearly identified key properties of ILs and IL-water mixtures related to protein performance, suggesting the use of the tailorable properties of ILs to inhibit protein aggregation, to promote protein crystallization, and to control protein aggregation pathways. This review discusses the critical properties of IL and IL-water mixtures and presents the latest understanding of the protein aggregation pathways and the development of IL systems that affect or control the protein aggregation process. Through this feature article, we hope to inspire further advances in understanding and new approaches to controlling protein behavior to optimize bioprocesses.

Hypothesis Dynamic imine surfactants (DIS) can be constructed by the formation of dynamic imine bonds (Dibs) between aromatic aldehydes and aliphatic amines in water. Because of the nature of Dibs in water, a thermodynamic equilibrium state was achieved between the DIS and aldehyde and amine precursors to form a dynamic combinatorial library (DCL). When the DIS served as sole emulsifier to form oil–H2O emulsions, the precursors migrated between the H2O phase and the oil phase, which altered the DCL equilibrium. The DIS concentration and emulsion stability also changed. Experiments By mixing 4-(2-sulfobetaine-ethoxy)-benzaldehyde (SBBA) and aliphatic amines of CnH2n+1NH2 (n = 4, BA; n = 6, HA; n = 8, OA; n = 10, DA) in water, four amphoteric DIS (SBBA–BA/HA/OA/DA) were prepared. Dib formation was characterized using 1H NMR. The DIS surface activity was studied by surface tension and fluorescence probe methods. The reversible switching of DIS and its wormlike micelles were explored. Findings SBBA–OA (or SBBA–DA) DIS was not a suitable emulsifier for stable hydrocarbon (HC)–H2O emulsions. OA and DA were more soluble in the HC phase than the H2O phase. The precursors of OA and DA migrated from the H2O to the HC phase, and the thermodynamic equilibrium state of DCL shifted towards Dib dissociation. The Dib could be regenerated by HC phase removal. A novel strategy where volatile HC (such as pentane) was used as a trigger was developed to switch the DIS reversibly and its self-assemblies (such as wormlike micelles) in water without inorganic salt accumulation. The SBBA–HA (or SBBA–BA) DIS was a suitable emulsifier for stable emulsions because HA and BA were more soluble in the H2O phase.

Polydopamine (PDA)-based self-adhesive hydrogel sensors are extensively explored but it is still a challenge to construct PDA-based hydrogels by free radical polymerization. Herein, a new approach to construct self-adhesive hydrogels by conducting free radical polymerization in both aqueous phase and micelle phase is developed. The following two-phase polymerization processes account for the formation of the self-adhesive hydrogels. The first one is the polymerization of acrylamide (AM) and dopamine (DA) in aqueous phase to form adhesive component PAM-PDA (PAM, polyacrylamide; PDA, polydopamine). The second one is the polymerization of hydrophobic monomer 2-methoxyethyl acrylate (MEA) in micelles of an amphiphilic block copolymer Pluronic F127 diacrylate (F127DA). The poly(2-methoxyethyl acrylate) (PMEA) networks help to maintain the high robustness of the hydrogel. Because PMEA and PDA form in relatively separated phases, the inhibition effect of PDA on the free radical polymerization process of PMEA is weakened. Based on this mechanism, mechanically strong and adhesive hydrogels are achieved. The introduced ions during preparation process, such as Na+, OH– and K+, endow the resulting hydrogels ionic conductivity. Resistive strain sensor of the hydrogel achieves a high gauge factor (GF) of 5.26, a response time of 0.25 s and high sensing stability. Because of the adhesiveness, such hydrogel sensor can be applied as wearable sensors in monitoring various human motions. To further address the freezing and drying problems of the hydrogels, organohydrogels are constructed in glycerol-water mixed solvent. The organohydrogels exhibit outstanding anti-freezing property and moisture retention ability, and their adhesiveness is well maintained in subzero conditions. Capacitive pressure sensors of the organohydrogels possessing a GF of 2.05 kPa−1, high sensing stability and reversibility, are demonstrated and explored in monitoring diverse human motions.

A facile soft-template solvent thermal strategy was developed to prepare mesoporous carbon-silica composite (MMCS) by using furfuryl alcohol(FA) as carbon precursor, Pluronic copolymer P123 as template, hydrated iron nitrate as iron source, and teraethylorthosilicate as silicon source and it was applied for the removal of methyl orange (MO). The as-synthesized MMCS with abound of hydrophilic groups processed a high specific surface area, large pore volume, and good magnetic response. With the increase amount of FA, the surface area and functional groups increased, promoting the adsorption effect. The adsorption isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamics were all studied in detail. Additional, it was shown that the adsorption process could not be interfered by the co-existence of PO43-, NO3-, CO32-, SO42- and real water matrix. Thus, the MMCS prepared in this study could be utilized as an alternative adsorbent for the removal of methyl orange from aqueous solution.

S-nitrosothiols (RSNOs) are an important group of nitric oxide (NO)-donating compounds with low toxicity and wide biomedical applications. In this paper, we, for the first time, demonstrate that the concentration of buffer remarkably affects the stability of RSNOs including naturally occurring S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) and synthetic S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP). For a solution with a high concentration of GSNO (e.g., 50 mM) and an initial near-neutral pH, the optimal buffer concentration is close to the GSNO concentration under our experimental conditions. A lower buffer concentration does not have adequate buffer capacity to resist the pH drop caused by GSNO decomposition. The decreased solution pH further accelerates GSNO decomposition because GSNO is most stable at near-neutral pH according to our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A higher-than-optimal buffer concentration also reduces the GSNO stability because buffer ingredients including phosphate, Tris base, and HEPES consume NO/N2O3. In contrast to GSNO, the highest SNAP stability is obtained when the starting solution at a neutral pH does not contain buffer species, and the stability decreases as the buffer concentration increases. This is because SNAP is more stable at mildly acidic pH and the SNAP decomposition-induced pH drop stabilizes the donor. When the RSNO concentration is low (e.g., 1 mM), the buffer concentration also matters because any excess buffer accelerates the donor decomposition. Since the effect of buffer concentration was previously overlooked and suboptimal buffer concentrations were often used, this paper will aid in the formulation of RSNO solutions to obtain the maximum stability for prolonged storage and sustained NO release.

The traditional sodium desulfurization process for waste lead-acid batteries is beneficial to the environment; however, it is limited by poor economic viability as the cost of desulfurizer is much higher than the value of desulfurization by-products. This study proposes a new closed-loop pre-desulfurization process for lead paste, which consumes only lime as the indirect desulfurizer, produces sodium sulfate as a by-product, and regenerates sodium hydroxide as the direct desulfurizer. The concentration of prepared sodium hydroxide reached 2.57 mol/L when the reaction was conducted at room temperature for 2.0 h, with a sodium oxalate: calcium oxide molar ratio of 1:1.3, a CaO: water mass ratio of 1:6, and magnetic stirring at 600 rpm. Cost estimation and economic analyses were also conducted. The cost of lead paste generated by this new pre-desulfurization process was 37.62 dollars/ton lower than traditional high-temperature smelting, and 44.42 dollars/ton lower than direct sodium pre-desulfurization. Thus, this process provides a practical and feasible clean recycling method for waste lead-acid batteries with significant environmental and economic benefits.

Alternative liposome surface coatings for PEGylation to evade the immune system, particularly the complement system, have garnered significant interest. We previously reported poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (MPC)-based lipids (PMPC-lipids) and investigated the surface modification of liposomes. In this study, we synthesize PMPC-lipids with polymerization degrees of 10 (MPC10-lipid), 20 (MPC20-lipid), 50 (MPC50-lipid), and 100 (MPC100-lipid), and coated liposomes with 1, 5, or 10 mol% PMPC-lipids (PMPC-liposomes). Non-modified and PEGylated liposomes are used as controls. We investigate the liposome size, surface charge, polydispersity index, and adsorption of plasma proteins to the liposomes post incubation in human plasma containing N,N,N',N'-ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) or lepirudin by some methods such as sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), western blotting, and automated capillary western blot, with emphasis on the binding of complement protein C3. It is shown that the coating of liposome PMPC-lipids can suppress protein adsorption more effectively with an increase in the molecular weight and molar ratio (1-10 mol%). Apolipoprotein A-I is detected on PMPC-liposomes with a higher molecular weight and higher molar ratio of PMPC-lipids, whereas α2-macroglobulin is detected on non-modified, PEGylated, and PMPC-liposomes with a shorter polymer chain. In addition, a correlation is shown among the PMPC molecular weight, molar ratio, and C3 binding. The MPC10-lipid cannot inhibit C3 binding efficiently, whereas surface modifications with 10 mol% MPC20-lipid and 5 mol% and 10 mol% MPC50-lipid suppress both total protein and C3 binding. Hence, liposome modification with PMPC-lipids can be a possible strategy for avoiding complement activation.

Hypothesis Interactions between droplets are of fundamental importance for understanding phenomena involving droplet collision and coalescence that determine multiphase flow behavior. The quantitative understanding of these interactions is essential for the manipulation and control of emulsions or complex fluids. The existing methods for interaction force determination are typically based on expensive mechanical probes and fine distance control. Therefore, further development of new techniques for interaction force determination is expected to be beneficial for research on surface force. Experiments In this study, droplet deformation during the interaction between two droplets was captured and analyzed to determine the interaction force. The approach speed of the two droplets was controlled by the injection rate of the fluid. The dynamic interaction force between two tetradecane droplets in various aqueous solutions was determined using the newly developed method, and the effects of two-phase physical properties and operating conditions on the measurement errors were investigated. Findings The droplet profile deformation was first applied as a probe to detect the interaction force. The measurement results were in good agreement with those obtained using the precise weighing sensor of a commercial interfacial tensiometer (K100, Kruss, Germany). The newly developed method was reliable, simple, and did not require the use of expensive devices. Furthermore, droplet deformability was found to be the key parameter in determining the total interaction force between the droplets.

International audience; The attachment and dissociation of a proton from a water molecule and the proton transfers at solidliquid interfaces play vital roles in numerous biological, chemical processes and for the development of sustainable functional materials for energy harvesting and conversion applications. Using first-principles computational methodologies, we investigated the protonated forms of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS-H+) interacting with water clusters (Wn, where n = 1-6) as a model to quantify the proton conducting and localization ability at solid-liquid interfaces. Successive addition of explicit water molecules to POSS-H+ shows that the assistance of at least three water molecules is required to dissociate the proton from POSS with the formation of an Eigen cation (H9O4+), whereas the presence of a fourth water molecule highly favors the formation of a Zundel ion (H5O2+). Reaction pathway and energy barrier analysis reveal that the formation of the Eigen cation requires significantly higher energy than the Zundel features. This confirms that the Zundel ion is destabilized and promptly converts in to Eigen ion at this interface. Moreover, we identified a Grotthuss-type mechanism for the proton transfer through a water chain close to the interface, where symmetrical and unsymmetrical arrangements of water molecules around H+ of protonated POSS-H+ are involved in the conduction of proton through water wires where successive Eigen-to-Zundel and Zundel-to-Eigen transformations are observed in quick succession.

Introduction Human norovirus (HuNoV) is a leading cause of infectious gastroenteritis. Since HuNoV shows resistance to alcohol, chlorine-based sanitizers are applied to decontaminate the virus on environmental surfaces. Chlorous acid water (CA) has been recently approved as a novel chlorine-based disinfectant categorized as a Type 2 OTC medicine in Japan. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the capability of CA to inactivate HuNoV. Methods HuNoV (genogroups GII.2 and GII.4) was exposed to the test disinfectants including CA and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), and the residual RNA copy was measured by reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) after pretreatment with RNase. In addition, the log10 reduction of HuNoV RNA copy number by CA and NaClO was compared in the presence of bovine serum albumin (BSA), sheep red blood cells (SRBC), polypeptone, meat extract or amino acids to evaluate the stability of these disinfectants under organic-matter-rich conditions. Results In the absence of organic substances, CA with 200 ppm free available chlorine provided >3.0 log10 reduction in the HuNoV RNA copy number within 5 min. Even under high organic matter load (0.3% each of BSA and SRBC or 0.5% polypeptone), 200 ppm CA achieved >3.0 log10 reduction in HuNoV RNA copy number while less than 1.0 log10 reduction was observed with 1,000 ppm sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) in the presence of 0.5% polypeptone. CA reacted with only cysteine, histidine and glutathione while NaClO reacted with all of the amino acids tested. Conclusions CA is an effective disinfectant to inactivate HuNoV under organic-matter-rich conditions.

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) is the major mineral phase in bone and teeth. The interaction of individual amino acids and citrate ions with different crystallographic HAP surfaces has remained uncertain for decades, creating a knowledge gap to rationally design interactions with peptides, proteins, and drugs. In this contribution, we quantify the binding mechanisms and binding free energies of the 20 end-capped natural amino acids and citrate ions on the basal (0 0 1) and prismatic (0 1 0)/(0 2 0) planes of hydroxyapatite at pH values of 7 and 5 for the first time at the molecular scale. We utilized over 1500 steered molecular dynamics simulations with highly accurate potentials that reproduce surface and hydration energies of (hkl) hydroxyapatite surfaces at different pH values. Charged residues demonstrate a much higher affinity to HAP than charge-neutral species due to the formation of superficial ion pairs and ease of penetration into layers of water molecules on the mineral surface. Binding free energies range from 0 to −60 kJ/mol and were determined with ∼ 10% uncertainty. The highest affinity was found for citrate, followed by Asp(-) and Glu(-), and followed after a gap by Arg(+), Lys(+), as well as by His(+) at pH 5. The (hkl)-specific area density of calcium ions, the protonation state of phosphate ions, and subsurface directional order of the ions in HAP lead to surface-specific binding patterns. Amino acids without ionic side groups exhibit weak binding, between −3 and 0 kJ/mol, due to difficulties to penetrate the first layer of water molecules on the apatite surfaces. We explain recognition processes that remained elusive in experiments, in prior simulations, discuss agreement with available data, and reconcile conflicting interpretations. The findings can serve as useful input for the design of peptides, proteins, and drug molecules for the modification of bone and teeth-related materials, as well as control of apatite mineralization.

A novel ionic liquid (IL) functionalized with thiodiglycol amic acid containing a soft S donor was synthesized for the effective and efficient extraction of platinum group metals (Ru, Rh, and Pd) from aqueous nitric acid solutions, such as high-level radioactive liquid waste (HLLW). The IL enabled rapid extraction of Pd(II) with an extraction ratio of approximately 100%. The extractions of Ru(III) and Rh(III) by the IL were slower than that of Pd(II), but the rates were accelerated by temperature elevation. The extractions of Ru(III) and Rh(III) at 50 °C reached equilibrium within 4 and 8 h, respectively, with the extraction ratios of over 90% without assisting agents or other methods for the extraction system. Furthermore, the IL could extract more than 90% of Ru(III), Rh(III), and Pd(II) from the simulated HLLW within 2 h at 50 °C.

Hypothesis Although protein adsorption at an interface is very common and important in biology and biotechnology, it is still not fully understood – mainly due to the intricate balance of forces that ultimately control it. In food processing (and medicine), controlling and manipulating protein adsorption, as well as avoiding protein adsorption (biofilm formation or membrane fouling) by the production of protein-resistant surfaces is of substantial interest. A major factor conferring resistance towards protein adsorption to a surface is the presence of tightly bound water molecules, as is the case in oligo ethylene glycol (OEG)-terminated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Due to strong attractive protein-protein and protein-surface interactions observed in systems containing trivalent salt ions, we hypothesize that these conditions may lead to a breakdown of protein resistance in OEG SAMs. Experiments We studied the adsorption behavior of BLG in the presence of a lanthanum(III) chloride (LaCl3) at concentrations of 0, 0.1, 0.8 and 5.0 mM on normally protein resistant triethylene glycol-termianted (EG3) SAMs on a gold surface. We used quartz-crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) and neutron reflectivity (NR) to characterize the morphology of the interfacial region of the SAM. Findings We demonstrate that the protein resistance of the EG3 SAM breaks down beyond a threshold salt concentration c ∗ and mirrors the bulk behaviour of this system, showing reduced adsorption beyond a second critical salt concentration c ∗ ∗ . These results demonstrate for the first time the controlled switching of the protein-resistant properties of this type of SAM by the addition of trivalent salt.

Bangladesh hosts extensive textile manufacturing, for some of which per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) have been used to impart water and dirt repellency, among others. Textile waste emissions to the atmosphere and discharge into rivers and other bodies of water could present a significant concern for human and ecosystem health, but there is little information on PFAS in Bangladesh. To assess the presence of ionic PFAS and their precursors in air and water from Dhaka, Bangladesh, polyethylene (PE) sheets were deployed for 28 days as passive samplers for neutral PFAS in outdoor air and water, while ionic PFAS were measured from discrete water grabs. The main objective was to develop a wipe sampling test to measure surface contamination of the most frequently used antineoplastic drugs (ADs) in Swedish healthcare and furthermore to develop an analysis method sensitive enough to assess low levels of contamination. Two wipe sampling tests with separate sample processing methods assessing i) cyclophosphamide (CP), ifosfamide (IF), 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), etoposide (ETO), gemcitabine (GEM) and cytarabine (CYT) (Wipe Test 1), and ii) GEM, CYT and methotrexate (MTX) (Wipe Test 2), respectively were developed by optimization of absorption and extraction efficiencies using different wipe tissue materials, tissue wetting solution and extraction solvents. A fast LC-MS/MS method was developed for simultaneous detection of the studied ADs. The limit of quantification for the method was between 0.04 to 2.4 ng/wipe sample (0.10 to 6.1 pg/cm2 for an area of 400 cm2) and at 50 ng/sample the within-day precision was between 1.3-15%, and the accuracy between 102-127%. Wipe Test 1 was applied in an assessment of cleaning efficiency of five different cleaning solutions (formic acid, water, sodium hydroxide, ethanol and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) for removal of ADs from surfaces made of stainless steel or plastic. For CP, IF, 5-FU, GEM and CYT 92% of the AD were removed regardless of surface and cleaning solution. In conclusion, a user-friendly assessment method to measure low levels of seven ADs in the work environment was developed and validated. Assessment of the decontamination efficiency of cleaning solutions concerning removal of ADs from stainless steel showed that efficiencies differed depending on the AD with water being the least effective cleaning agent. The results suggests that a combination of different cleaning agents including detergent and a solution with an organic component would be optimal to efficiently remove the measured ADs from surfaces in the workplace.

This study reports electrochemical treatment of different therapeutic classes of pharmaceuticals (caffeine, prazosin, enalapril, carbamazepine, nifedipine, levonorgestrel, and simvastatin) in a mixture. The electrochemical process was investigated using graphite-PVC anode at different applied voltages (3, 5, and 12 V), initial concentrations of studied pharmaceuticals in aqueous solution (5 and 10 mg/L), and concentrations of sodium chloride (1 and 2 g/L). The % removal of pharmaceuticals increased with the applied voltage, and was found higher than 98% after 50 min of electrolysis at 5 V. Energy consumption ranged between 0.760 and 3.300 Wh/mg using 12 V being the highest value compared to 3 and 5 V. The formation of chlorinated by-products from four selected pharmaceuticals, simvastatin (C 11 H 13 Cl 3 O 5 , and C 10 H 12 Cl 4 O 3 ), prazosin (C 13 H 12 Cl 3 N 5 O 3 and C 10 H 11 Cl 4 N 2 O 2 ), carbamazepine and caffeine (C 15 H 11 N 2 O 2 Cl and C 8 H 9 N 4 O 2 Cl) was identified and elucidated using liquid chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry (LC-TOF/MS).

BACKGROUND Water shortage is the main factor affecting agricultural production in the vast arid and semi-arid areas of northern China. Using proper irrigation methods can optimize the efficiency of water use and improve the quality of agricultural products. This study investigated the effect of different irrigation levels on the quality of 'Honeycrisp' apples grown in the Loess Plateau of northern China. RESULTS Different irrigation levels were applied to the 'Honeycrisp' apple trees via root irrigation using ceramic emitters that provide saturation levels of 75%θf -90%θf (S1, where θf is the field capacity), 60%θf -75%θf (S2), 45%θf -50%θf (S3), and no irrigation treatments (CK). Compared to the apples from the CK group, the water content, transverse diameter, individual fruit weight, and titratable acid content of S1 and S2 group apples increased significantly. However, their hardness, soluble solids, and total sugar content decreased significantly. The phenolic acid content of apples also changed with the irrigation levels. The chlorogenic acid content of apples increased with increased irrigation volume, while the hyperoside, protocatechuic acid, and caffeic acid content decreased. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents of fruits were the highest in S2 group apples. They also had the strongest ABTS and DPPH free radical scavenging capacities. CONCLUSION The volume of irrigation applied through ceramic emitters significantly impacted the quality of 'Honeycrisp' apples grown in loess areas. Considering water conservation and improving fruit quality, the most suitable ceramic root irrigation level was observed to be 60%θf -75%θf (S2). This article is protected by copyright. In this study, the biopolymers whey protein and chitosan were used to create a thermoresponsive emulsion. The impact of the inclusion of chitosan and inclusion of specific oils on the rheological properties and response to temperature were investigated by a stepwise build-up from simple solutions to oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. Whey protein (WP) concentration and chitosan concentration were varied. The results may help develop strategies for incorporating thermoresponsive materials in stable and high-performing formulations for use in cosmetics.Solutions of whey protein concentrate (WPC) by itself, chitosan by itself and the combination of the two at various concentrations were tested with flow sweeps, temperature sweeps and frequency sweeps. Then, three different oils of jojoba, avocado and silicone were included to form emulsions and the tests were repeated to determine flow behaviour, response to temperature and structure.By comparing 15 wt. % and 20 wt. % WP solutions, it was found that 15 wt. % WP could provide good viscosities and modulus at a lower amount of material used. The solution composed of 15 wt. % WP, and 0.5 wt. % chitosan was found to have the greatest structural response to temperature compared to solutions with 1.0 wt. % and 1.5 wt. % chitosan. Compared to the addition of 10 wt. % silicone and 10 wt. % avocado oil to form emulsions, the addition of 10 wt. % jojoba oil further strengthened the gel network the most. The final emulsion with pigment added had improved viscosity and thermoresponsive behaviour. The WP and chitosan emulsions were shear thinning, elastically dominated and behaved as classical gels. The behaviour of the emulsions was dependent upon the hydrophobic interactions between the protein and the oil and the electrostatic interactions between the protein and the chitosan.An emulsion composed of 15 wt. % WP, 10 wt. % jojoba oil and 0.5 wt. % chitosan solution was found to have the greatest structural response to temperature. This study of an O/W emulsion containing whey protein concentrate and chitosan demonstrated that different oils and conditions can be used to tune thermoresponsive and rheological behaviour.Dans cette étude, les biopolymères protéine de lactosérum et chitosan ont été utilisés pour créer une émulsion thermosensible. Les résultats peuvent aider à développer des stratégies pour incorporer des matériaux thermosensibles dans des formulations stables et très performantes pour une utilisation dans les cosmétiques. MÉTHODE: Des solutions de concentré de protéines de lactosérum (WPC), de chitosan par lui-même et la combinaison des deux à diverses concentrations ont été testées avec des balayages d’écoulement, des balayages de température et des balayages de fréquence. Ensuite, trois huiles différentes de jojoba, d’avocat et de silicone ont été ajoutées pour former des émulsions et les tests ont été répétés pour déterminer le comportement d’écoulement, la réponse à la température et la structure. RÉSULTATS: En comparant des solutions de 15 % en poids et de 20 % en poids de WP, il a été constaté que 15 % en poids de WP pouvaient fournir de bonnes viscosités et un bon module à une quantité inférieure de matériau utilisé. La solution composée de 15 % en poids de WP et de 0,5 % en poids de chitosan s’est avérée avoir la plus grande réponse structurelle à la température par rapport aux solutions avec 1,0 % en poids et 1,5 % en poids de chitosan. Par rapport à l’ajout de 10 % en poids de silicone et de 10 % en poids d’huile d’avocat pour former des émulsions, l’ajout de 10 % en poids d’huile de jojoba a encore renforcé le réseau de gel. L’émulsion finale avec pigment ajouté avait amélioré la viscosité et le comportement thermorsensible. Les émulsions WP et chitosan étaient minces par cisaillement, dominées élastiquement et se comportaient comme des gels classiques. Le comportement des émulsions dépendait des interactions hydrophobes entre la protéine et l’huile et des interactions électrostatiques entre la protéine et le chitosan.Une émulsion composée de 15 % en poids de WP, de 10 % en poids d’huile de jojoba et de solution de chitosan à 0,5 % en poids s’est avérée avoir la plus grande réponse structurelle à la température. Cette étude d’une émulsion O /W contenant du concentré de protéines de lactosérum et du chitosan a démontré que différentes huiles et conditions peuvent être utilisées pour ajuster le comportement thermorsensible et rhéologique. RÉSUMÉ GRAPHIQUE: Cette étude a réalisé la conception de la formulation de systèmes d’émulsion huile-dans- eau thermosensible durables avec les biopolymères protéine de lactosérum et chitosan. Différentes concentrations de matières premières et d’huiles ont été utilisées pour identifier l’accord du comportement thermoréactif et rhéologique afin de les rendre utiles dans diverses applications cosmétiques.

Natural protein channels have evolved with exquisite structures to transport ions selectively and rapidly. Learning from nature to construct biomimetic artificial channels is always challenging. Herein we present a unimolecular transmembrane proton channel by quinoline-derived helix, which exhibited highly selective and ultrafast proton transport behaviors. This helix-based channel possesses a small luminal cavity of 1 A in diameter, which could efficiently reject the permeation of cations, anions or water molecules but only permits the translocation of protons owing to the size effect. The proton flow rate exceeded 107 H+ s-1 channel-1 and reached the same magnitude with gramicidin A. Mechanism investigation revealed that the directionally arrayed NH-chain inside the synthetic channel played a pivotal role during the proton flux. This work not only presented a helix-based channel with the smallest observable nanopore, but also unveiled an unexplored pathway for realizing efficient transport of protons via the consecutive NH-chain.

This present work describes the possible advantages of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) blending with ball-milled glutinous starch (BMGS) on the modification of release and penetration of model water-soluble active ingredient, lidocaine hydrochloride, from the blended matrix. The 20–67% CMC mass containing CMC-BMGS matrices were fabricated by casting the aqueous dispersion of CMC-BMGS onto the tray and oven-dried. BMGS and CMC were compatible as revealed by SEM and ATR-FTIR. Irrespective of the CMC mass, all CMC-BMGS matrices showed comparable matrix mass, thickness, moisture content, moisture absorption as well as mechanical and mucoadhesive properties. The surface pH of CMC-BMGS tended to increase with the CMC mass. Depends on CMC mass, matrix properties, release, and penetration rates were modulated significantly. CMC had shown a substantial role in the swelling and erosion behaviors of BMGS films, and thus modulated the release and penetration significantly. The release and penetration mechanisms of active ingredient from the CMC-BMGS matrices were Fickian diffusion-controlled, with rates of release and penetration ranging from 2.05 ± 0.21 to 7.55 ± 1.08%/min½, and from 3.48 ± 0.28 to 8.04 ± 0.64 μg/cm2/min½, respectively. The capability of CMC-BMGS matrices as mucoadhesive delivery systems to provide sustained delivery of water-soluble active ingredients was disclosed.

The main objective of this paper is to analyse and attempt to understand the nature of rheological changes observed and the dynamics of Carbopol NF 980 hydroalcoholic gels neutralized specifically by triethanol amine (TEA), both as a function of time and alcohol type to probe time stabilities and ageing effects in such carbopol gel systems. The rheological changes and dynamics of 3 carbopol gel systems were observed; the gels included a water-based, ethanol-based, and isopropyl alcohol-based gel. It is hoped that this study shall shed light on the dynamical nature and the microstructural evolution of such networked gel systems, which were maintained under closed isothermal conditions and left completely unperturbed. The experimental results can provide the information necessary to understand and proposes plausible mechanisms guiding this dynamical behaviour in hydroalcoholic carbopol gels.A TA instrument mechanical rheometer was used to measure the viscosity and storage and loss modulus, and a pH meter was utilized to determine the changes in each sample over the period.Studying the differences in the gel structures upon initial preparation illustrated that the ethanol and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) gels differed from the water-based gel in terms of viscosity, G', and G″, with the IPA gel displaying the lowest viscosity and moduli values across all shear rates. All the three gel systems exhibited strong shear thinning characteristics and were reminiscent of yield stress type found in colloidal gels. The water-based gel compared to the hydroalcoholic gels was strongly G' dominated, with the magnitude of the difference between G' and G″ observed to be much higher. This reflects that initial formation of the water-based gel structure possesses a much more rigid structure with a high elastic modulus component dominating. This also suggests that the water-based gel structure displayed stronger interactions between the carbopol particles when compared to those of the hydroalcoholic gels. Over the 30-day period, it was observed that the ethanol and water-based gels did not reveal any appreciable viscosity changes, with only an approximate 12% and 7% change from day 1 to 30, respectively. It was observed that the IPA systems' viscosity drastically increased over the period, with an approximately 77% change from day 1 to 30. The water and ethanol-based gels also exhibited very similar rheological behaviour over the entire time period with G' dominating G″. The G″ values of the water and ethanol-based gels decreased slightly at the end of day 30 by 10% and 16%, respectively, while the G' values for each sample remained essentially unchanged, increasing only 0.06% for the water-based gel, and increasing 1.4% for the ethanol-based gel. This further confirms the relatively stable gel structures attained. For the isopropyl gel system, the storage modulus of the system exhibited an average percent increase of approximately 16% from day 1 to day 30, but interestingly the loss modulus varied the least amongst all the gel systems, with only a 3% increase. The increase in G' reflects upon the evolution of a more rigid structure by day 30 for the IPA gel. This observation is clearly consistent with the corresponding increase in viscosity observed in the IPA gel. None of the gels tested displayed a consistent pH over the period. The pH of the hydroalcoholic gels was higher than that of the water-based gel for a majority of the period. The greatest fluctuations in pH were observed for the water and IPA gels, even though the water-based gel had one of the most stable rheological profiles out of the samples tested. The water, ethanol, and IPA gels' pH increased approximately 25%, 6%, and 5%, respectively, from day 1 to day 30.The rheological and pH study of the 3 hand sanitizer systems over a 30-day period allowed for rational insights into the plausible reasons responsible for driving the observed rheological changes in these unperturbed systems. For the water-based gel, we hypothesize that the changes observed are due to physical ageing, where the gel structure has evolved over time to eventually progress towards a more stabilized framework structure. The pH of the gel upon formation was on the lower side. Such a lower pH influences the formation of a gel, which is comparatively less swollen and occupies a slightly lesser volume, and thereby points to a much less compacted gel network structure or alternatively, a more fluid structure. If the particles moved around more, the system was not initially in a state of low energy, causing increased particle movement, and in turn, physical ageing. This could be responsible for the development of a physically altered structure over time. The gel structure dynamically attempts to minimize its free energy by becoming more rigid, which has been observed as being manifested in the decrease of both the viscosity and the G″. For the hydroalcoholic gels, we conjecture that ageing observed was a result of chemical ageing, and the alcohol type employed in the preparation is primarily responsible for exhibiting this effect. The polarities of ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol are key to the stabilization of such resultant network structures which get formed because of neutralization. It has been observed in previous studies that with decreasing polarity, there was an increase in the neutralization needed to obtain the development of a structure half as well developed as the final resultant structure. Isopropyl alcohol is a much less polar solvent compared to ethanol and water, and therefore required higher levels of TEA as the base to neutralize the system. We conjecture that the charged TEA cationic species had a greater propensity to get exchanged with bulk solution in the vicinity of the polymer into the bulk solution, and that the pH fluctuation observed indicated a kinetic exchange process over time, causing the viscosity and moduli profiles to increase along with the pH. At this time though, further investigations need to be carried out to truly understand the underlying instability, and thus dynamics for gel systems of this type.L’objectif principal de cet article est d’analyser et de tenter de comprendre la nature des changements rhéologiques observés et la dynamique des gels hydroalcooliques Carbopol NF 980 neutralisés spécifiquement par l’amine triéthanol (TEA), à la fois en fonction du temps et du type d’alcool pour sonder les stabilités temporelles et les effets du vieillissement dans de tels systèmes de gel carbopol. Les changements rhéologiques et la dynamique de 3 systèmes de gel de carbopol ont été observés ; les gels comprenaient un gel à base d’eau, d’éthanol et d’alcool isopropylique. On espère que cette étude éclairera la nature dynamique et l’évolution microstructurale de ces systèmes de gel en réseau, qui ont été maintenus dans des conditions isothermes fermées et laissés complètement imperturbables. Les résultats expérimentaux peuvent fournir les informations nécessaires pour comprendre et proposer des mécanismes plausibles guidant ce comportement dynamique dans les gels hydroalcooliques de carbopol. MÉTHODE: Un rhéomètre TA mécanique a été utilisé pour mesurer la viscosité, le module de stockage et de perte, et un pH-mètre a été utilisé pour déterminer les changements dans chaque échantillon au cours de la période. RÉSULTATS: L’étude des différences dans les structures du gel lors de la préparation initiale a montré que les gels d’éthanol et d’alcool isopropylique (IPA) différaient du gel à base d’eau en termes de viscosité, G′ et G’’ le gel IPA affichant les valeurs de viscosité et de modules les plus faibles pour tous les taux de cisaillement. Les trois systèmes de gel présentaient de fortes caractéristiques d’amincissement par cisaillement et rappelaient le type de contrainte d’élasticité que l’on trouve dans les gels colloïdaux. Le gel à base d’eau par rapport aux gels hydroalcooliques était fortement dominé par G′, l’ampleur de la différence entre G′ et G’’ présentant une importance beaucoup plus élevée. Cela reflète le fait que la formation initiale de la structure de gel à base d’eau possède une structure beaucoup plus rigide avec un composant de module élastique élevé dominant. Cela suggère également que la structure du gel à base d’eau présentait des interactions plus fortes entre les particules de carbopol par rapport à celles des gels hydroalcooliques. Au cours de la période de 30 jours, il a été observé que l’éthanol et les gels à base d’eau n’ont révélé aucun changement de viscosité appréciable, avec seulement un changement approximatif de 12% et 7% du jour 1 au jour 30, respectivement. Il a été observé que la viscosité des systèmes IPA a considérablement augmenté au cours de la période, avec un changement d’environ 77% du jour 1 au jour 30. Les gels à base d’eau et d’éthanol ont également montré un comportement rhéologique très similaire sur toute la période, G′ dominant G’’. Les valeurs G’’ des gels à base d’eau et d’éthanol ont légèrement diminué à la fin de la journée 30 de 10% et 16%, respectivement, tandis que les valeurs G′ pour chaque échantillon sont restées essentiellement inchangées, n’augmentant que de 0,06% pour le gel à base d’eau et augmentant de 1,4% pour le gel à base d’éthanol. Cela confirme en outre les structures de gel relativement stables atteintes. Pour le système de gel isopropylique, le module de stockage du système a montré une augmentation moyenne d’environ 16% du jour 1 au jour 30, mais il est intéressant de noter que le module de perte variait le moins parmi tous les systèmes de gel, avec seulement une augmentation de 3%. L’augmentation de G′ reflète l’évolution d’une structure plus rigide au jour 30 pour le gel IPA. Cette observation est clairement cohérente avec l’augmentation correspondante de la viscosité observée dans le gel IPA. Aucun des gels testés n’a montré un pH constant sur la période. Le pH des gels hydroalcooliques était supérieur à celui du gel à base d’eau pendant la majeure partie de la période. Les plus grandes fluctuations de pH ont été observées pour les gels d’eau et d’IPA, même si le gel à base d’eau avait l’un des profils rhéologiques les plus stables parmi les échantillons testés. Le pH de l’eau, de l’éthanol et des gels IPA a augmenté d’environ 25%, 6% et 5%, respectivement, du jour 1 au jour 30.L’étude rhéologique et pH des 3 systèmes de désinfectant pour les mains sur une période de 30 jours a permis d’obtenir des informations rationnelles sur les raisons plausibles responsables des changements rhéologiques observés dans ces systèmes non perturbés. Pour le gel à base d’eau, nous émettons l’hypothèse que les changements observés sont dus au vieillissement physique, où la structure du gel a évolué au fil du temps pour éventuellement progresser vers une structure plus stabilisée. Le pH du gel lors de la formation était dans la partie inférieure. Un pH aussi bas influence la formation d’un gel, qui est comparativement moins gonflé et occupe un volume légèrement inférieur, et indique ainsi une structure de réseau de gel beaucoup moins compactée ou autrement dit, une structure plus fluide. Si les particules se déplaçaient davantage, le système n’était pas initialement dans un état de faible énergie, ce qui entraînait une augmentation du mouvement des particules et, à son tour, un vieillissement physique. Cela pourrait être responsable du développement d’une structure physiquement modifiée au fil du temps. La structure du gel tente dynamiquement de minimiser son énergie libre en devenant plus rigide, ce qui a été observé comme se manifestant par la diminution de la viscosité et du G’’ Pour les gels hydroalcooliques, nous pensons que le vieillissement observé était le résultat d’un vieillissement chimique, et le type d’alcool utilisé dans la préparation est principalement responsable de cet effet. Les polarités de l’alcool éthylique et de l’alcool isopropylique sont essentielles à la stabilisation de ces structures de réseau résultantes qui se forment en raison de la neutralisation. Il a été observé dans des études antérieures qu’avec la diminution de la polarité, il y avait une augmentation de la neutralisation nécessaire pour obtenir le développement d’une structure à moitié aussi bien développée que la structure résultante finale. L’alcool isopropylique est un solvant beaucoup moins polaire que l’éthanol et l’eau, et nécessitait donc des niveaux plus élevés de TEA comme base pour neutraliser le système. Nous pensons que les espèces cationiques TEA chargées avaient une plus grande propension à être échangées avec une solution en vrac à proximité du polymère, dans la solution en vrac, et que la fluctuation du pH observée indiquait un processus d’échange cinétique au fil du temps, entraînant une augmentation des profils de viscosité et de modules avec le pH. À l’heure actuelle, cependant, des recherches supplémentaires doivent être menées pour vraiment comprendre l’instabilité sous-jacente, et donc la dynamique des systèmes de gel de ce type.

Phytochemicals in the water extract of Eurycoma longofolia roots were identified using both solid-liquid and liquid-liquid extraction based fractionation techniques. A reversed phase C18 solid phase extraction (SPE) was used as solid-liquid extraction, whereas solvent partition was applied as liquid-liquid extraction. Total saponin was increased after fractionation. A few known quassinoids; eurycomanone, 13α(21)-epoxyeurycomanone, pasakbumin D, 13β,18-dihydroeurycomanol and 13β,21-dihydroxyeurycomanol were identified from the 40% and 60% methanol fractions of SPE. Solvent partition extract using ethyl acetate was found to have the highest saponin content compared to butanol and chloroform fractions. Subsequent acetone precipitation of the organic fractions recovered a formylated hexose trimer and other saccharide-containing compounds. Ethyl acetate effectively recovered saponins from E. longofolia water extract using liquid-liquid extraction followed by acetone precipitation.

A highly hydrophobic and self-recoverable sponge was prepared with cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), N-alkylated chitosan (NCS), and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), which was then endowed with hydrophobic properties via simple thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The three-dimensional (3D) interconnected microstructure of the prepared CNF/NCS/PVA sponge was found to have 96% porosity, ultra-low density (16.61–50.91 mg/cm3) and high hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 147°), which can absorb various organic solvents with an absorption capacity of 19.05–51.08 times of its original weight. Besides, the sponge could bear 80% strain and be cyclically compressed 50 times under the strain of 50%. The sponge can effectively separate oil/water mixtures and water-in-oil emulsions with high separation efficiency and fluxes. Moreover, the sponge could keep its good stability in various acidic, saline and mechanical abrasion conditions. The green preparation and good separation efficiency suggest a potential application of recyclable and versatile CNF/NCS/PVA sponges in oil/water separation.

Environmentally friendly and non-toxic polylactic acid (PLA) foam has shown great application prospects in heat preservation, adsorption and other fields. However, it is still challenging to prepare high-expansion PLA foam. Herein, a cooling batch foaming process under supercritical CO2 (sc-CO2), based on pre-melted non-crystalline state, was proposed to prepare PLA foams with high expansion ratio. The CO2 dissolved in the polymer melt will lower the crystallization temperature of PLA. Due to the lack of crystallization, the foaming temperature of PLA can be reduced, which increases the CO2 saturation and helps foam. When foaming is triggered before crystallization, ultrahigh expansion foam can be produced. Based on pre-melting treatment, the maximum expansion ratio of PLA has reached 59.7-fold. At the same time, an open-pore structure is produced by this method, which can selectively absorb oil from water. In addition, the adsorption capacity of CCl4 reaches 15 g/g, and there is no significant attenuation in 20 adsorption-desorption cycles. This work provides a green, solvent-free method to prepare biodegradable oil-adsorbing foam.

Curtains with light-to-heat conversion capacity can warm up a room under solar radiation and improve the thermal energy efficiency of buildings, thereby reducing energy consumption during winter. Herein, a photothermal silk fibroin aerogel is synthesized by freeze-drying and curing method, using silk fibroin (SF) as template and scaffold, copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs) as photothermal conversion material, polyethylene glycol (PEG) as plasticizer, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the package agent. The results reveal that SF as the template may guide the growth of CuS NPs, and the introduction of PEG improves the flexibility of the prepared CuS@SF aerogel. The composite CuS@SF-PEG/PDMS aerogel not only preserves the initial characteristics of SF aerogel but also integrates hydrophobic, rapid antibacterial ability, high-performance photothermal conversion efficiency, and stable switching effect. The lightweight, self-heating SF-based aerogel can be applied to the preparation of home textiles such as smart curtains. Additionally, it can be used as absorbent for cleaning up viscous oil from water, which could expand the applications of SF-based biomaterials toward meeting the requirements of sustainable developments.

Lyophilization can extend protein drugs stability and shelf life, but it also can lead to protein degradation in some cases. The development of safe freeze-drying approaches for sensitive proteins requires a better understanding of lyophilization on the molecular level. The evaluation of the freezing process and its impact on the protein environment in the nm scale is challenging because feasible experimental methods are scarce. In the present work we apply pulse EPR as a tool to study the local concentrations of the solute in the 20 nm range and of the solvent in the 1 nm range for a spin labeled 27 kDa green fluorescent protein, mEGFP, and the 172 Da TEMPOL spin probe, frozen in different water/glycerol-d5 mixtures. For average glycerol volume fractions, φgly-d5avg, ≥ 0.4 we observed transparent glassy media; the local concentration and the 1 nm solvent shell of TEMPOL and the protein correspond to those of a uniform vitrified glass. At φgly-d5avg≤ 0.3 we observed partial ice crystallization, which led to ice exclusion of glycerol and TEMPOL with freeze-concentration up to the glycerol maximal-freeze local volume fraction, φgly-d5loc, of 0.64. The protein concentration and its shell behavior was similar except for the lowest φgly-d5avg (0.1), which showed a 4.7-fold freeze-concentration factor compared to sevenfold for TEMPOL, and also a smaller φgly-d5loc. We explain this behavior with an increased possibility for proteins to get stuck in the ice phase during fast freezing at higher freeze-concentration and the related large-scale mass transfer.

Hypothesis: A detailed quantitative description of the effects of antioxidants in inhibiting lipid peroxidation in oil-in-water emulsions can be achieved by determining the relationships between the rates of initiation of the lipid peroxidation reaction, the length of the induction period preceding the propagation step of the radical oxidation process and the effective antioxidant interfacial concentrations. Experiments : We successfully prepared and characterized a series of olive oil-in-water nanoemulsions and allowed them to spontaneously oxidize. Their oxidative stability was evaluated by carrying out in the presence, and absence, of antioxidants derived from gallic acid, by monitoring the formation of primary oxidation products with time, by determining the corresponding induction periods, and by determining the effective interfacial concentrations of the antioxidants in the intact emulsions. Findings: Results show that both, the length of the induction periods and the antioxidant interfacial concentrations change concomitantly, increasing with the hydrophobicity of the antioxidant up to a maximum at the octyl derivative; longer aliphatic chains decrease their efficiency. The ratio between the interfacial antioxidant concentration and the induction period remains constant independently of the antioxidant, demonstrating that the effective concentrations of antioxidant at the interface control their efficiencies in emulsions. Chitosan crosslinked with metal-organic framework (MOF-199)@aminated graphene oxide aerogel (MOF-199@AFGO/CS) were prepared to adsorb formaldehyde and methyl orange. The prepared MOF-199@AFGO/CS aerogel was well characterized via SEM, EDX, FT-IR, XRD and XPS to reveal the microstructure and composition. Besides, the mechanical property and the stability of MOF-199@AFGO/CS aerogel were investigated. The results showed that MOF-199@AFGO/CS aerogel had good stability in water, compression resilience and thermostability. The study on the ability to adsorb formaldehyde gas and methyl orange showed that the adsorption capacity of MOF-199@AFGO/CS aerogel was related to the pore size and the surface functional groups of MOF-199@AFGO/CS aerogel. When the pore size is moderate, as the amino group and MOF-199 on the aerogel increased, the adsorption capacity of formaldehyde gas (197.89 mg/g) and methyl orange (412 mg/g) can reach the maximum. Furthermore, the adsorption process at equilibrium followed the Freundlich isotherm model. The kinetic behavior was well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model, indicating chemisorption as the rate-determining step. This work can provide a reliable basis for the adsorbent to remove pollutants in different forms at the same time, and has potential application in simultaneously adsorbing liquid pollutants and gas pollutants.

Curcumin has a wide range of pharmacological activities, but its poor water solubility, chemical instability, and low bioavailability extensively limit the further application in food and pharmaceutical systems. In this study, the potential of using soy protein (SP) to interact with, encapsulate and protect hydrophobic curcumin (Cur) by pH-shift method was evaluated. Results indicated that SP structure experienced a typical pathway from unfolding to refolding during the pH-shifting process (pH 7-12-7), which clearly expressed the encapsulation process of Cur by pH-shift method into SP. Then the physicochemical and morphological properties of soy protein-encapsulated curcumin nanoparticles (SP-Cur) were investigated. Fluorescence measurements and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry showed that the combination of Cur and SP was a spontaneous reaction with a decrease in Gibbs free energy, which was mainly driven by hydrophobic interaction. Fourier Transform Infra-Red and Ultraviolet Spectroscopy further showed that the Cur had successfully embedded into SP. SP-Cur had a spherical shape-like structure and relatively small size (d < 100 nm). The encapsulation efficiency of Cur showed a concentration-dependent manner, which could be as high as 97.43%. In addition, the SP-Cur exhibited enhanced thermal stability and photostability.

Background: Cellulose, having huge reserves of natural polymers, has been widely applied in pharmaceutical and biomedicine fields due to its good biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity and excellent mechanical properties. At present, water- resistant metal-based and petroleum-based materials applied in the medical field have obvious problems of poor biocompatibility and high cost. Therefore, water-resistant cellulose- based materials with good biocompatibility and low price have become an attractive alternative. This review aims to summarize the preparation of water-resistant cellulose- based materials and their potential application in pharmaceutical and biomedical in recent years. Methods: Common hydrophobic treatments of cellulose fibers or paper were overviewed. The preparation, properties and applications of water-resistant cellulose- based materials in the pharmaceutical and biomedical fields were summarized. Results: Common hydrophobic treatments of cellulose fibers or paper were divided into chemical modification (graft polymerization, crosslinking, solution casting or dip-coating), physico-chemical surface modifications (plasma treatments, surface patterning, electrostatic spraying and electrowetting) and physical processing (electrostatic spinning, SAS process and 3D EHD printing). These hydrophobically processed cellulose fibers or paper could be prepared into various water-resistant cellulose-based materials and applied in pharmaceutical excipients, drug-loaded amphiphilic micelles, drug-loaded composite fibers, hydrophobic biocomposite film/coatings and paper-based detectors. They presented excellent water resistance and biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity and high drug loading ability, and stable drug release rate, etc., which could be used for water-insoluble drugs carriers, wound dressings, and medical testing equipment. Conclusion: Currently, water-resistant cellulose-based materials were mainly applied in water-insoluble drugs delivery carriers, wound dressing and medical diagnosis and presented great application prospects. However, the contradiction between hydrophobicity and mechanical properties of these reported water-resistant cellulose-based materials limited their wider application in biomedicine such as tissue engineering. In the future, attention will be focused on the higher hydrophobicity of water-resistant cellulose-based materials with excellent mechanical properties. In addition, clinical medical research of water-resistant cellulose-based materials should be strengthened.

To ensure the safety of drinking water, ozone (O3) has been extensively applied in drinking water treatment plants to further remove natural organic matter (NOM). However, the surface water and groundwater near the coastal areas often contain high concentrations of bromide ion (Br−). Considering the risk of bromate (BrO3−) formation in ozonation of the sand-filtered water, the inhibitory efficiencies of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ammonia (NH3) on BrO3− formation during ozonation process were compared. The addition of H2O2 effectively inhibited BrO3− formation at an initial Br− concentration amended to 350 µg/L. The inhibition efficiencies reached 59.6 and 100% when the mass ratio of H2O2/O3 was 0.25 and > 0.5, respectively. The UV254 and total organic carbon (TOC) also decreased after adding H2O2, while the formation potential of trihalomethanes (THMsFP) increased especially in subsequent chlorination process at a low dose of H2O2. To control the formation of both BrO3− and THMs, a relatively large dose of O3 and a high ratio of H2O2/O3were generally needed. NH3 addition inhibited BrO3− formation when the background ammonia nitrogen (NH3 N) concentration was low. There was no significant correlation between BrO3− inhibition efficiency and NH3 dose, and a small amount of NH3 N (0.2 mg/L) could obviously inhibit BrO3− formation. The oxidation of NOM seemed unaffected by NH3 addition, and the structure of NOM reflected by synchronous fluorescence (SF) scanning remained almost unchanged before and after adding NH3. Considering the formation of BrO3− and THMs, the optimal dose of NH3 was suggested to be 0.5 mg/L.

The natural moisturizing factor (NMF) is a mixture of small water-soluble compounds present in the upper layer of the skin, stratum corneum (SC). Soaking of SC in water leads to extraction of the NMF molecules, which may influence the SC molecular properties and lead to brittle and dry skin. In this study, we investigate how the molecular dynamics in SC lipid and protein components are affected by the removal of the NMF compounds. We then explore whether the changes in SC components caused by NMF removal can be reversed by a subsequent addition of one single NMF component: urea, pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA) or potassium lactate. Samples of intact SC were investigated using NMR, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and sorption microbalance. It is shown that the removal of NMF leads to reduced molecular mobility in keratin filaments and SC lipids compared to untreated SC. When the complex NMF mixture is replaced by one single NMF component, the molecular mobility in both keratin filaments and lipids is regained. From this we propose a general relation between the molecular mobility in SC and the amount of polar solutes which does not appear specific to the precise chemical identify of the NMF compounds.

Mulching has been extensively sought after in modern agriculture. However, massive utilization of plastics for mulching has induced severe environmental concerns. Developing biodegradable mulch thus represents an emerging need for future agriculture. By using bamboo-derived carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), this study proposed a crosslinking strategy to prepare liquid film as quality mulch. CMC was synthesized by delignifying bamboo and etherifying resultant cellulose, which was then blended with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and crosslinked by glutaraldehyde to prepare a liquid film. By simply spraying on soil, mulch can quickly form on soil surface. Especially, bamboo-timber derived mulch had strong mechanical property (18.2 MPa), good transmittance (74.2%) and moisture absorption (141%), and excellent soil moisture retention. More importantly, about 64% of used mulches were biodegraded within 60-d after burring in soil, which will not need post-handling. These results highlighted that bamboo-derived mulch can be an alternative of current plastic mulch to tackle associated environmental pollution.

In this study, a novel strategy for modifying nanocellulose (NC) by borax cross-linking was developed, and the obtained borax modified nanocellulose (BNC) was incorporated into cationized high amylose maize starch (CS) films to evaluate the applicability. Cellulose molecules were successfully cross-linked by boron ester bonds, and the original crystal type and basic chemical structure were not changed. Compared with NC, the relative crystallinity of BNC was slightly increased, and the thermal stability was obviously enhanced. Addition of NC and BNC to CS films significantly improved their tensile strength and water resistance. The dispersion of nanocellulose in CS films was effectively improved by borax cross-linking modification. CS/BNC films showed higher mechanical and water resistance properties compared with CS/NC films. Compared with pure CS film, tensile strength of the composite film with 6 wt% BNC increased about 4.0 times, and its water-vapor permeability decreased about 37%. The novel strategy for preparing BNC by using boron ester bonds will provide a potential approach for the development of starch films with desirable properties.

This study aims to assess the water quality of the Mahananda River in Bangladesh and its suitability for drinking and agricultural uses. For water quality determination, 15 samples were collected from different sites of the Mahananda River to calculate Water Quality Index (WQI) and Entropy Water Quality Index (EWQI). Result shows that among different Hydrochemical parameters, carbonate and bicarbonate concentrations crossed the maximum limit in all the samples, while fluoride concentration exceeding in Sample-15 with the highest value found in Baroghoria area. From WQI result, water quality for the Baroghoria area was found unsuitable for drinking with WQI − 309.22, whereas another two samples of Mollikpur and Namo Neemgachi fall under ‘poor’ category with WQI of 184.49 and 198.99, respectively. EWQI reveals medium to excellent water quality. Result from different irrigation indices (Na%, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), magnesium hazard (MH), total hardness, Kelly ratio (KR), and permeability index (PI) values) showed their suitability for irrigation. Principal component analysis (PCA) explained a total of 89.71% of variances in the dataset. Significant positive association within EC–Na, EC–sulfate, Ca–TH, nitrate–sulfate, etc., were reported indicating prominence in terms of both geogenic as well as anthropogenic processes such as silicate weathering and the release of untreated sewerage, respectively, which governs the water quality evolution in the study area. Cluster analysis (CA) classifies all water samples in five different clusters based on five different characteristics. Mahananda River water is found safe for both drinking and agricultural purposes, except for few samples near the dense human settlement areas. Result from this study is useful for decision makers to design management plans for the river water quality, environmental pollution and human well-being.

Atmospheric CO2- source- and- sink is among the most debated issues that have puzzled climate change geochemist for decades. Here, we tested whether heavy metal pollutants in river sediments favor preservation of organic matter through shielding microbial degradation. We measured CO2 emission and extracellular enzyme activities at land-water interface (LWI) of 7 sites along a 285 km main stem of the Ganga River and 60 locations up- and downstream of two contrasting point sources discharging urban (Assi drain; Asdr) and industrial (Ramnagar drain; Rmdr) wastewaters to the river. We found the lowest CO2 flux at Rmdr mouth characterized by the highest concentrations of Cu, Cr, Zn, Pb, Ni, and Cd. The fluxes were relatively higher at locations up-and down-stream Rmdr. Substrate induced respiration (SIR), protease, FDAase and β-D-glucosidase all showed a similar trend but phenol oxidase and alkaline phosphatase showed opposite trend at the main river stem and Asdr. Sites rich in terrestrially derived organic matter have high phenol oxidase activity with low CO2 emission. The CO2 emission in the main river stem showed curvilinear relationships with total heavy metals (∑THM; R2 = 0.68; P 2 = 0.65; p − 1 were able to significantly decrease the activities of protease, FDAase and β-D-glucosidase. The study has implications for understanding C-cycling in human-impacted river sediments where metal pollution shields microbial degradation consequently carbon and nutrient release; and merits attention towards river management decisions.

Electrolyzed waters, containing mainly hypochlorous acid, are used in dental practice because of their high microbicidal effect. For wider use, three neutral electrolyzed water-based gels, namely, HOCl-containing aqueous gels were prepared with a thickening/gelling agent in this study. We evaluated their microbicidal effects against four strains and storage stabilities indicated by available chlorine concentration. Immediately after preparation, all gels (70 ppm) could completely remove microbes by a 3-min treatment. The gel prepared with xanthan gum remarkably reduced its available chlorine concentration even under shaded and refrigerated storage conditions, failing to maintain its microbicidal effect following 1-day storage, whereas other gels, prepared with carboxyvinyl polymer or agar, maintained effective concentration (>20 ppm), with high microbicidal effects following 9-day and 21-day storage, respectively. Neutral electrolyzed water-based gels might be useful to remove oral microbes. Based on our results, agar is the most suitable thickening/gelling agent from the viewpoint of storage stability.
