Vitamin D is a well-known steroid hormone that plays an important role in controlling bone levels of calcium, phosphorus, and overall mineralization. Several animal and human studies indicate that vitamin D hypovitaminosis may be linked to an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and dementia. The objective of the present review is to summarize current knowledge of the effects of vitamin D deficiency and vitamin D intake on cognitive function. The possible underline mechanisms of these effects were also discussed. We reviewed the literature starting from 1986 to 2019 by searching PubMed, Cochrane, Semantic Scholar, Medline, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases for all observational studies, randomized clinical trials, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews using the keywords “vitamin D and Alzheimer disease”, “neuroprotective effect of vitamin D”, “vitamin D deficiency and Alzheimer ”, “role of vitamin D in neurodegenerative diseases ”, ” vitamin D and amyloidogenesis”, “acetylcholine and vitamin D”, and “memory and vitamin D ”.We also referred to animal and in vitro studies that dealt with the possible mechanisms of actions of the neuroprotective effect of vitamin D. Our findings showed that Vitamin D supplementation improves cognitive performance via reducing amyloidogenesis, restoration of neurotransmission, maintaining calcium balance, regulating neurotrophic factors, anti-inflammatory action, apoptosis regulation, antioxidant, and vascular processes. This review might be open new horizons in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of the disease and neurodegeneration and enable the development of new approaches in treatment and prevention of the disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pierson syndrome is a rare genetic disease defined by congenital nephrotic syndrome in association with microcoria. The authors aim to describe the posterior segment and retinal features in Pierson syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review of nine patients diagnosed with Pierson syndrome was ascertained. Details of ophthalmic history, ocular examination, retinal imaging, and surgical interventions were obtained during a median duration of 17 months of follow-up (range: 6 to 60 months). Retinal interventions included scatter laser photocoagulation and surgical retinal repair. RESULTS: Sixteen eyes of nine patients were included. The axial length of five eyes with flat retina was 26.59 mm ± 0.99 mm. Highly myopic features including tessellated fundus with accompanying optic disc pallor, unidentifiable cup, and abnormal retinal vascular emanation from the disc were observed in all eyes (100%), whereas 12 eyes (75%) had parapapillary chorioretinal atrophy. Features of abnormal retinal vascularization included avascular peripheral retina on fluorescein angiography, aberrant course of the temporal arcades in 13 eyes (81.3%), and straightened nasal retinal blood vessels in 12 eyes (75%). Tortuous retinal blood vessels were observed in three eyes (18.75%). Surgical repair was performed in five out of seven eyes with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). Recurrence was observed in all eyes, which required two to three procedures to achieve final reattachment. CONCLUSIONS: Combined features of high axial myopia with incomplete peripheral vascular maturation characterize the posterior segment in Pierson syndrome. Objective History of the utilization of various parts of Camellia sinensis such as seed oil in different folklore medicaments and plants leaves for preparing green tea is very old. Pharmacokinetics (PK) plays a key role in the drug discovery stage by channelizing the medicinal chemist in the optimization process of chemical sequences and lends a hand to pharmacologists to invent in vivo studies. The objectives of the present study were to elaborate quantitative determination of phytochemicals and nutritional assessment of C. sinensis especially on the composition of seed oil of the local C. sinensis plant and to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of leaves extract in healthy volunteers. Method Determination of secondary metabolites and nutritional assessment of C. sinensis were carried out. The composition of seed oil was elaborated with the help of GC–MS analysis for its potential significance and evidence-based household uses as folklore but also for industrial applications. Pharmacokinetics of water extract of C. sinensis leaves was compared in 9 healthy human volunteers and divided into three groups (n = 3, in each) fasting, fed and fed with coke. Plasma concentrations were noted in each group and were quantified using a validated HPLC method. Results Phytochemical analysis and proximate analysis of C. sinensis suggests the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins sterols; and protein, lipids fiber and carbohydrate respectively. GC–MS of the C. sinensis seed oil shows the presence of linoleic acid 100%, palmitic acid 33.55%, stearic acid 21.96, caffeine 21.72 and vitamin E 14.49%. Pharmacokinetic studies suggest that in the fasting group, higher plasma concentration was found among all the volunteers. Conclusion The phytochemical analysis of green tea suggests that it is a good source of secondary metabolites full of important nutrients. GC–MS of seed oil reveals that seed of C. sinensis is a rich source of fatty acid, and can be used to fulfill the pharmaceutical need. Pharmacokinetic studies may help to develop the biomarkers for the green tea utilization and also would help to design the dose and dose frequency for achieving the significant absorption level. PK and PD also help to determine its plasma concentration and therapeutic efficacy.

In this study, the activity concentration of 235U, 40K, 238U, 226Ra, and 232Th in phosphate rock found in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been measured by gamma-ray spectrometry. Phosphate is extracted from the northern region in Saudi Arabia and widely used in agriculture as fertilizers as well as in the chemical industry. The average activity concentration of 235U, 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K has been measured as (10.34 ± 1.49 Bq kg−1, 260.99 ± 19.68 Bq kg−1, 242.33 ± 2.74 Bq kg−1, 3.42 ± 0.94 Bq kg−1, and 47.50 ± 3.03 Bq kg−1) for Al-Jalamid phosphate rock ores, respectively; (46.10 ± 2.61 Bq kg−1, 1028.31 ± 36.88 Bq kg−1, 989.98 ± 6.41 Bq kg−1, 13.75 ± 1.68 Bq kg−1, and 51.93 ± 3.82 Bq kg−1) for Turaif phosphate rock ores, respectively; (63.60 ± 3.33 Bq kg−1, 1353.25 ± 41.58 Bq kg−1, 1304.29 ± 7.70 Bq kg−1, 13.45 ± 1.64 Bq kg−1, and 40.26 ± 3.67 Bq kg−1) for Umm Wu’al phosphate rock ores, respectively; and (13.83 ± 1.59 Bq kg−1, 318.72 ± 21.78 Bq kg−1, 350.50 ± 3.14 Bq kg−1, 5.01 ± 1.13 Bq kg−1, and 42.15 ± 3.02 Bq kg−1) for As-Sanam phosphate mines, respectively. The radiological parameters (gamma index, absorbed dose, outdoor and indoor annual effective dose, and total excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR)) have also been calculated to assess the health hazards. The radiation indices, effective dose, and ELCR have been found high in all samples corresponding to International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) safety limits, which reflects a radiological health risk for workers and population. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirms the concentration of dominant elements like fluorapatite (Ca5(PO4)3F), dolomite (CaMg (CO3)2), and minor traces of quartz (SiO2) and calcite (CaCO3). The elemental concentration of CaO, Al2O3, P2O5, SiO2, MgO Al2O3, and Fe2O3 has been measured by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique.

The present study investigated the influence of inorganic amendments viz., SDS (sodium dodecyl sulphate) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in enhancing metal tolerance in plants. Seedlings of an important ornamental plant, Dahlia variabilis Cav. were grown under cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) stress. 30-days old seedlings were transferred to pots containing sterilized sand and supplemented with Hoagland’s medium. After 15 days of transplanting, four treatments (0, 10, 25, and 100 mg kg-1) of Cd and four treatments of Pb (0, 100, 500 and 5000 mg kg-1) were used with or without application of 2.0 mM SDS and 2.5 mM EDTA, separately and in combination. Seedlings were further grown for 60 days in culture media. Results revealed that both Cd and Pb significantly reduced plant growth, pigment content, and relative water content. Antioxidant enzymes viz., superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and catalase (CAT) along with protein and total soluble sugar contents showed a declining trend with an increase in Cd and Pb concentrations applied. The Cd and Pb treatment enhanced the production rate of reactive oxygen species (ROS) as depicted by the increased malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production in leaf. Inorganic amendments viz., EDTA+SDS applied either alone or in combination significantly alleviated Cd and Pb-induced toxic effects. However, a combination of EDTA+SDS showed significant results than used separately. These results revealed that the application of inorganic amendments in combination can enhance the phytoextraction capacity of the species studied. However, the effects of various amendments vary with the nature of the inorganic compound. The study suggests that the application of EDTA and SDS could be a useful strategy for enhancing the phytoextraction capability of Dahlia variabilis to remove Cd and Pb from contaminated soils.

Background: Several studies have proven a correlation of renin-angiotensin system with neurodegenerative diseases such Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's is associated with memory and cognitive dysfunction .The present study was conducted to investigate whether perindopril and azilsartan combination have neuroprotective effect against aluminum chloride-induced cognitive impairment in rats than either alone. Methodology: Fifty-four male albino Westar rats were used in this study. Alzheimer's was induced by daily administration of aluminum chloride (AlCl3) (100 mg/kg), groups of rats were categorized into nine groups. Normal control (saline), vehicle received carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), positive control (Alcl3, 100 mg/kg), perindopril groups (0.5 and 1mg /kg/day) plus (Alcl3, 100 mg/kg), azilsartan groups ( 3.5 and 7 mg/kg/day) plus (Alcl3, 100 mg/kg) and combined groups 1&2 [(perindopril 0.5 mg/kg + azilsartan 3.5 mg/kg ) and (perindopril 1 mg/kg + azilsartan 7 mg/kg)], respectively, plus (Alcl3, 100 mg/kg). The duration of treatment was 60 days. The behavioral test was used to assess cognitive function, followed by estimation levels of beta-amyloid-42 (Aβ-42), acetylcholine esterase (AChE), malondialdehyde (MDA), tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), nitric oxide (NO) in the hippocampus by ELISA kits and histological examination of different hippocampal regions. Results and discussion: Chronic treatment with perindopril and azilsartan either alone or in combination significantly alleviated cognitive decline evaluated by the Y-maze test with a significant decrease in the hippocampal levels of Aβ-42, AChE, MDA, and TNF-α versus non treated control (positive control). Furthermore, most hippocampus histopathological changes were improved. Conclusion and recommendations: based on behavioral, biochemical, and histopathological findings of the present study, it is concluded that this study showed neuroprotective effect of ACEIs and ARBs either combined or alone.

Background: Many studies revealed that diabetes is an independent risk factor for developing cognitive dysfunction, and Alzheimer. During diabetes, overexpression of nitric oxide, tumor necrosis factor, interleukin-6 and interleukin-1 beta could lead to Aβ accumulation and neuronal death. Aim: To examine the neuroprotective effect of different doses of vitamin D3 against diabetic-induced cognitive dysfunction in rats. Moreover, possible underlying mechanisms were also investigated. Methods: High-fat diet plus streptozotocin were used to induce diabetes in Westar rats. We sub-grouped the diabetic rats into six subgroups, positive control, vitamin D3 groups (100, 500 and 1000 IU/kg/day), vitamin D3 plus rivastigmine, and rivastigmine monotherapy. After the induction of diabetes, we started treatment for sixteen months. Morris water maze test was used to evaluate cognitive function, followed by estimation of beta-amyloid-42, inducible nitric oxide synthase, nitric oxide, tumor necrosis factor, interleukin-6, and interleukin-1β levels in the hippocampus by ELIZA kits. To examine the effect of pre emergence herbicides, plant extracts and mulches on yield and yield components of maize, a field experiment was carried out at New Developmental Farm, The University of Agriculture Peshawar-Pakistan during summer crop season 2016. Maize variety “Azam” was sown in Randomized Complete Block (RCB) design having four replications and ten treatments i.e. hand weeding, Dual Gold 960 EC (S-metolachlor 1 L ha-1), Stomp 330 EC (pendimethaline 2.5 L ha-1), atrazine 1.25 L ha-1, Eucalyptus camaldulensis L. extract (125 g L-1), Ammi visnaga L. extract (125 g L-1), black plastic mulch, wheat straw mulch, saw dust mulch and weedy check. The data revealed that hand weeding and herbicides significantly affected the weed density (m-2), weeds biomass (kg ha-1), plant height (cm), kernels weight (g), number of kernels ear-1, biological yield (kg ha-1) and grain yield (kg ha-1). All the significant parameters of crop were comparable among the hand weeding, atrazine, S-metolachlor and pendimethaline treated plots. However, atrazine and S-metolachlor proved to be the most economical herbicides giving maximum yield (4636.4 and 4562.8 kg ha-1), respectively. Among plant extracts, E. camaldulensis showed satisfactory results in suppressing weeds and enhancing yield of maize i.e. (3441.6 kg ha-1). Hence, the use of herbicides (atrazine and S-metolachlor) at the recommended rates and hand weeding is recommended for effective weed control and ultimately high yield of maize crop.

In this study, the effects of seed soaking in proline (12 mM) or Moringa oleifera leaf extract (MLE; 6%) on the biomass, yield, and the antioxidant systems were investigated using wheat plants grown under NaCl stress (120 mM). Shoot fresh and dry weights, yield, K+ ion accumulation, K+/Na+ ration, soluble protein, photosynthetic pigment (that is, carotenoids and chlorophylls) contents, and efficiency (that is, Fv/Fm and performance index; PI) of wheat were decreased at salt-stress treatment. Salinity increased the activity of superoxide dismutase, ascorbate and glutathione peroxidases, and the content of malondialdehyde, H2O2, and Na+ and Cl− contents in leaf compared to control. Additionally, increased magnitudes of proline, soluble sugar, soluble protein, ascorbate, glutathione contents were more pronounced under 120 mM NaCl than those under control. Proline or MLE ameliorated the inhibitory effects of NaCl stress to varying degrees, ensuring significant amelioration on biomass, yield, osmoprotectants and antioxidant systems. In comparison to proline, seed soaking with MLE was more effective in improving wheat growth and yield by mitigating the inhibitory effects of salinity stress. The presented results indicate that seed soaking with 6% MLE can contribute to protecting wheat seedlings/plants against NaCl stress by mitigating the oxidative stress.

In the crust of earth, silicon (Si) is one of the two major elements. For plant growth and development, importance of Si remains controversial due to the widely differences in ability of plants to take up this element. In this paper, pot experiments were done to study Si roles in improving salt, drought or cadmium (Cd) stress tolerance in wheat. Up to full emergence, all pots were watered at 100% field capacity (FC) every other day with nutrient solution without any treatments. Fifteen days after sowing, pots were divided into four plots, each with 40 pots for no stress (control) and three stress treatments; drought (50% FC), salinity (200 mM NaCl) and cadmium (2 mM Cd). For all plots, Si was applied at four levels (0, 2, 4 and 6 mM). Under no stress condition, Si applications increased Si content and improved growth as a result of reduced electrolyte leakage (EL), malondialdehyde (MDA) and Na+ contents. Under stress conditions, Si supplementation conferred higher growth, gas exchange, tissue water and membranes stabilities, and K+ content, and had limited MDA and Na+ contents and EL compared to those obtained without Si. Compared to those without Si, enzyme (e.g., superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidase) activity was improved by Si applications, which were linked with elevated antioxidants and osmoprotectants (e.g., free proline, soluble sugars, ascorbic acid and glutathione) contents, might providing antioxidant defense against abiotic stress in wheat. The level of 4 mM Si was most effective for mitigating the salt and drought stress conditions, while 6 mM Si level was most influentially for alleviating the Cd stress condition. These results suggest that Si is beneficial in remarkably affecting physiological phenomena and improving wheat growth under abiotic stress.

The existing commercial nuclear power plants (PWR and BWR) utilize the oxide fuels, i.e., UO2. This fuel selection is not questionable, where the safety and economy are the top priority in the nuclear industry. In this work, the potential advantages of microencapsulated fuels to System Integrated Modular Advanced Reactor “SMART” has been explored. The UN and UCO have been considered as the candidate fuel material for the SMART reactor. The detailed design and fuel assembly configurations with different fuel types of the SMART reactor have been investigated for criticality with depletion (burn up), fuel and moderator temperature coefficients, and power peaking factor using OpenMC. The fissile and fertile fuel elements with coated particles are embedded in graphite matrices. The results are presented with a review of attributes and potential benefits. The nitride fuel has an advantage of mechanical stability, enhanced thermal conductivity, and high fuel density compared to dioxide fuel (UO2). The melting point of standard fuel, UN, and UCO are similar. Thus, they have higher safety margins under NPP's operating conditions. Therefore, nitride (UN) and carbide (UCO) fuel types are more attractive than standard uranium oxides because they are safer and beneficial. The dioxide fuel (UO2) is considered as the reference and compared with candidate material. The neutronic assessment within SMART core specification examined the effective multiplication factor, thermal flux distribution, axial and radial power distribution, and power peaking factor at the beginning, and end of the fuel cycle.

Nanocomposites of highly reduced graphene oxide (HRG) and ZnOx nanoparticles doped manganese carbonate containing different percentages of HRG were prepared via a facile co-precipitation method. The prepared sample calcined at 300 °C yielded i.e., ZnOx(1%)–MnCO3/(X%)HRG (where X = 0–7), calcination at 400 °C and 500 °C, yielded different manganese oxides i.e., ZnOx(1%)–MnO2/(X%)HRG and ZnOx(1%)–Mn2O3/(X%)HRG respectively. The prepared catalyst were subjected to catalytic evaluation and a comparative catalytic study between carbonates and oxides for the liquid-phase aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols to corresponding aldehydes using molecular oxygen as an eco-friendly oxidant without adding additives or bases. The influence of various parameters such as percentage of HRG, reaction time, catalyst amount, calcination and reaction temperature was systematically examined to optimize reaction conditions using oxidation of benzyl alcohol as a substrate model. It was found that the catalytic performance is remarkably enhanced after using HRG as catalyst co-dopant for the aerobic oxidation of alcohols, possibly owing to the presence of carbon defects and oxygenated functional groups on HRG surface. The as-synthesized catalysts were characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, Raman, TGA, BET, and FT-IR. Under optimal conditions, the catalyst with composition ZnOx(1%)–MnCO3/(1%)HRG calcined at 300 °C exhibited remarkable specific activity (57.1 mmol·g−1·h−1) with 100% conversion of benzyl alcohol and more than 99% product selectivity within extremely short time (7 min). The as-prepared catalyst was re-used up to five consecutive times without significant decrease in its activity and selectivity. To the best of our knowledge, the achieved specific activity is the highest so far compared to the earlier reported catalysts used for the benzyl alcohol oxidation. A wide range of substituted benzylic and aliphatic alcohols were selectively oxidized into their corresponding aldehydes with complete convertibility and selectivity in short reaction times without over-oxidation to the acids. Due to their significant low cost, superior reproducibility, excellent catalytic efficiency, the ZnOx(1%)–MnCO3/(X%)HRG nanocomposites possess several application prospect in other organic chemistry reactions.

Magnesium (Mg) often leaches down in sandy soils due to high mobility and its foliar application proves to be beneficial. Organic biostimulants also prove to be helpful to affect plant physio-biochemistry and antioxidative defense system. The present study evaluated the beneficial effects of seed soaking in maize grain extract (MGE; 3%) in integration with or without foliar Mg (1 mM) in comparison to control (no treatment) on growth, yield performance, seed oil and fatty acid profile including physiological and biochemical basis of Hysun-336 sunflower hybrid grown on a sandy soil under greenhouse conditions. The integrative treatment (seed soaking in MGE + foliar spray with Mg) elevated growth traits, plant water status and membrane stability index, and reduced electrolyte leakage. Improved leaf contents of chlorophylls, carotenoids, total soluble sugars and proline, activities of non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidants were also observed. In addition, enhanced uptake of N, P, K including Mg and endogenous levels of plant hormones IAA, GA3 and zeatin were recorded with the integrative treatment. Seed yield and oil contents including oleic (mono-unsaturated) and linoleic (poly-unsaturated) fatty acids also increased; however, a decrease in other saturated, mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fatty acids was noticed. Improved seed and seedling vigor traits were also observed in progeny of sunflower that harvested from the integrative treatment. In summary, improved plant performance by the integrative treatment may be attributed to improved activities of antioxidants contributing to improved plant water content, nutrient uptake and endogenous hormonal levels in sunflower plants grown under sandy soil conditions.

von Hippel–Lindau (VHL) is a multisystemic inherited disease which most commonly affects the retina and central nervous system. The hallmark retinal manifestation of VHL in the eye is retinal capillary hemangioblastoma (RCH). Significant visual morbidity can result from exudative retinal detachments (ERDs) or tractional retinal detachments. Here, we present a 21-year-old male with long-standing poor vision in the right eye. On examination, he was found to have a massive ERD in the right eye with multiple RCH in both eyes. Genetic testing revealed a heterozygous (c.390dupT) mutation in the VHL gene. Intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide injection resulted in subretinal fluid absorption and near total resolution of ERD. Retinal flattening made RCH accessible for laser photocoagulation. Following multiple focal lasers to the RCH, the lesions were regressed with the flat retina and stable vision.

Recently, the strategy of seed soaking has been successfully applied using extracts from different plant parts for healthy growth of plant under different environmental stresses. Compared to antioxidants like ascorbic acid (AsA) and glutathione (GSH) or polyamines (PAs) like spermine (SPM), spermidine (SPD), and putrescine (PUT), the effects of seed soaking using maize grain extract (MGE) on the biomass, productivity, phytohormones, and antioxidant defense system and its different components were examined with Cd2+-stressed wheat plants. In a preliminary study, seed soaking using AsA + GSH or PUT + SPD + SPM was more effective in increasing shoot fresh and dry weights, SPAD chlorophyll, and grain yield, and reducing malondialdehyde (MDA) content than individuals. In addition, MGE at 2% was more efficient than other concentrations. Therefore, they were selected for the main study. In the main study, compared to the control, seed soaking in AsA + GSH, PUT + SPD + SPM or MGE had positive effects on plant growth, yield, photosynthetic efficiency, contents and redox states of AsA and GSH, contents of PAs and plant hormones to varying degrees. Proline content and its metabolism enzymes activity, contents of soluble protein, N-compounds, soluble sugars, and α-tocopherol (α-TOC), and activities of antioxidant enzymes were not affected. However, contents of MDA and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were significantly reduced under normal conditions. Under Cd2+ stress (1.2 mM), along with the detrimental increases in the contents of MDA, H2O2 and Cd2+, contents of N-compounds, soluble sugars, proline content and its metabolism enzymes activities, AsA and GSH and their redox states, and polyamines, and activities of antioxidant enzymes were increased. In contrast, plant growth and yield, photosynthetic efficiency, soluble protein, and plant hormones were significantly reduced compared to the control. However, all of these attributes were significantly improved to varying degrees along with reduced contents of Cd2+, MDA, and H2O2 by seed soaking in AsA + GSH, PUT + SPD + SPM or MGE compared to the Cd2+-stressed control. Compared to AsA + GSH or PUT + SPD + SPM, seed soaking in MGE at 2% conferred the best results. Therefore, it is recommended to soak wheat seeds using MGE to improve plant growth and productivity by restricting the inhibitory influences of oxidative stress induced by Cd2+ stress.

The anti-anginal effects of allopurinol were assessed in experimental model rats of angina and their effects were evaluated with amlodipine. In the vasopressin-induced angina model, oral administration of allopurinol in dose of 10mg/kg revealed remarkably analogous effects in comparison with amlodipine such as dose-dependent suppression of vasopressin-triggered time, duration and severity of ST depression. In addition, allopurinol produced dose dependent suppression of plasma Malondialdehyde (MDA) level, systolic blood pressure, cardiac contractility and cardiac oxygen consumption; while in contrast, amlodipine minimally suppressed the elevation of plasma MDA level. Endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) expression, serum nitrate were strikingly increased, however lipid profile was significantly reduced. Seemingly, allopurinol was found to be more potent than amlodipine – a calcium channel antagonist. To conclude, it was explicitly observed and verified that on the ischemic electrocardiography (ECG) changes in angina pectoris model in rats, allopurinol exerts a significant protective effects, reminiscent of enhancement of vascular oxidative stress, function of endothelial cells, improved coronary blood flow in addition to the potential enhancement in myocardial stress. Moreover, our findings were in conformity with several human studies.
