The viability of lithium-sulfur batteries as an energy storage technology depends on unlocking long-term cycle stability. Most instability stems from the release and transport of polysulfides from the cathode, which causes mossy growth on the lithium anode, leading to continuous consumption of electrolyte. Therefore, development of a durable cathode with minimal polysulfide escape is critical. Here, we present a saccharide-based binder system that has a capacity for the regulation of polysulfides due to its reducing properties. Furthermore, the binder promotes the formation of viscoelastic filaments during casting which endows the sulfur cathode with a desirable web-like microstructure. Taken together this leads to 97% sulfur utilisation with a cycle life of 1000 cycles (9 months) and capacity retention (around 700 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles). A pouch cell prototype with a specific energy of up to 206 Wh kg−1 is produced, demonstrating the promising potential for practical applications. The long-term cycling of Li-S batteries depends on the polysulfides shuttling regulation. Here, the authors present a saccharide-based binder system to control the polysulfides migration and improve the cycle life of a Li-S pouch cell.

Lithium metal has been intensively investigated as a promising anode for next generation rechargeable Li metal batteries (LMBs). However, the safety concern on Li anodes caused by uncontrolled Li dendrite growth in liquid electrolytes hinders their application. Herein, a novel poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) based gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) with an asymmetric structure has been designed and developed to effectively retard the growth of lithium dendrites. Atomistic simulations confirm the strong interactions between PF6− and dipoles in the polymer matrix, which can anchor PF6− in the GPE and slow down its mobility to prevent space charge formation. In addition, this unique asymmetric membrane with a channel upper layer greatly enhances the mobility of Li+ in the GPE due to its low tortuosity and high porosity. The synergistic effect of the ion-dipole interaction and asymmetric structure increases the Li+ transference number to 0.66 and ionic conductivity to 3.36 mS cm−1 (20 °C). Using this superior asymmetric GPE, Li|Li symmetric cells show more stable cycle performance than those using a liquid electrolyte. Li|LiFePO4 batteries with the asymmetric GPE also deliver an impressive electrochemical performance, i.e., coulombic efficiency of 99.5% at 2C after 600 cycles. In consequence, this novel asymmetric GPE possesses potential application in high energy LMBs.

Caesium silver bismuth halide double perovskites, in the first instance Cs2AgBiBr6, were recently introduced to the field of emerging photovoltaics as environmentally friendly, non-toxic and thermodynamically stable photoabsorber materials. However, the wide indirect bandgaps of these materials indicate the need for bandgap engineering and enhancing the light absorption to improve the photovoltaic performance. The present work demonstrates that this can be achieved via modification of the double perovskite with sulphide to obtain caesium silver bismuth sulphobromide materials, Cs2AgBiBr6−2xSx, which have been synthesised as pin-hole-free uniform films and systematically investigated herein. Notable enhancements in the intrinsic light absorption for 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2 are demonstrated, as are the improvements by up to 50% in the photocurrent density of the corresponding thin-film solar cells. The devices based on the films with the nominal composition Cs2AgBiBr5.8S0.1 delivered a short-circuit current density of 3.0 ± 0.3 mA cm−2 and a power conversion efficiency of 1.9 ± 0.1% (cf. 2.1 ± 0.2 mA cm−2 and 1.3 ± 0.1%, respectively, for the control cells based on the sulphide-free Cs2AgBiBr6). Equally important, caesium silver bismuth sulphobromides demonstrate excellent stability against all common environmental stimuli, viz. heat, light, and humidity.

The γ ' ( Ag 2 Al ) phase in the Al–Ag alloy system has served as a textbook example for understanding phase transformations, precipitating hexagonal close-packed (HCP) crystals in the face-centred cubic (FCC) aluminium matrix. The γ ' precipitates display fully coherent interfaces at their broad facets and semicoherent interfaces at their edges. Shockley partial dislocations are expected to decorate the semicoherent interface due to the FCC-HCP structural transformation. Determining the exact locations and core structures of interfacial dislocations, however, remains challenging. In this study, we used aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and atomistic simulations to re-visit this classical system. We characterised and explained the Ag segregation at coherent interfaces in the early stage of precipitation. For semicoherent interfaces, interfacial dislocations and reconstructions were revealed by bridging advanced microstructure characterisation and atomistic simulations. In particular, we discovered a new FCC/HCP interfacial structure that displays a unique combination of Shockley partial, Lomer-Cottrell and Hirth dislocations that evolve from the known interfacial structure purely composed by Shockley partial dislocations. Our findings show that the FCC-HCP transformation is more complex than hitherto considered, due to the interplay between structure and composition confined at interfaces.

With its monoelemental composition, various crystalline forms and an inherently strong spin-orbit coupling, bismuth has been regarded as an ideal prototype material to expand our understanding of topological electronic structures. In particular, two-dimensional bismuth thin films have attracted a growing interest due to potential applications in topological transistors and spintronics. This calls for an effective physical model to give an accurate interpretation of the novel topological phenomena shown by two-dimensional bismuth. However, the conventional semi-empirical approach of adapting bulk bismuth hoppings fails to capture the topological features of two-dimensional bismuth allotropes because the electronic band topology is heavily influenced by crystalline symmetries as well as atom spacings. Here we provide a new parameterization using localized Wannier functions derived from the Bloch states in first-principles calculations. We construct new tight-binding models for three types of two-dimensional bismuth allotropes: a Bi (111) bilayer, bismuthene and a Bi(110) bilayer. We demonstrate that our tight-binding models can successfully reproduce the band structures, symmetries and topological features of these two-dimensional allotropes. We anticipate that these models can be extended to other similar two-dimensional topological structures such as antimonene and arsenene. Moreover, these models can serve as a starting point for investigating the electron/spin transport and electromagnetic response in low-dimensional topological devices., 20 pages, 6 figures

In this study, first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to investigate the contribution of each individual reaction at the magnesium/water interface. Thermodynamic and kinetic models derived from the DFT-calculated parameters are used to describe interdependent reactions at the interface and the resultant magnesium electrochemical activity at different pH and potentials. These models are able to rationalise experimental findings, such as those obtained from polarisation and immersion tests, and provide new insights for defining a complete and viable mechanism of aqueous magnesium electrochemistry.

Molybdenum based compounds are an emerging class of non-metallic catalytic materials for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media. However, most of them lose considerable catalytic performance and exhibit poor long-term stability in alkaline media. Here, planar molybdenum oxide, with high alkaline stability and ordered intracrystalline pores, is developed as the HER candidate. The pores with diameters in the order of ∼5–7 A are HER-active, and appear after an NH4+ doping-driven phase transition from the orthorhombic to hexagonal phase. Such a unique structure facilitates the diffusion of ionic entities and water molecules to the HER sites and helps in the removal of gaseous products, therefore improving the surface active area and reaction kinetics. These intracrystalline pores also reduce the long term stress on electrodes. The corresponding HER activity is extremely stable for >40 h in an alkaline medium at an overpotential of 138 mV with a Tafel slope of 50 mV dec−1. Such properties offer a superior combination compared to those of other reported molybdenum based nanostructures, hence providing a great opportunity for developing high-performance alkaline non-metal HER catalysts.

Many phase transformations associated with solid-state precipitation look structurally simple, yet, inexplicably, take place with great difficulty. A classic case of difficult phase transformations is the nucleation of strengthening precipitates in high-strength lightweight aluminium alloys. Here, using a combination of atomic-scale imaging, simulations and classical nucleation theory calculations, we investigate the nucleation of the strengthening phase θ′ onto a template structure in the aluminium-copper alloy system. We show that this transformation can be promoted in samples exhibiting at least one nanoscale dimension, with extremely high nucleation rates for the strengthening phase as well as for an unexpected phase. This template-directed solid-state nucleation pathway is enabled by the large influx of surface vacancies that results from heating a nanoscale solid. Template-directed nucleation is replicated in a bulk alloy as well as under electron irradiation, implying that this difficult transformation can be facilitated under the general condition of sustained excess vacancy concentrations., Exactly how seemingly simple solid-state precipitation occurs in alloys remains elusive. Here, the authors show that excess vacancies introduced into a nanoscale, irradiated or deformed aluminium-copper alloy enable template-directed nucleation of the known strengthening phase θʹ.

Microalloying is a routine method to optimize precipitation and mechanical properties in light metals. Here we study how In and Sb (0.025 at.%) additions in an Al-1.7 at.% Cu alloy benefit precipitation during ageing and investigate the underlying mechanism using scanning transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The combined additions accelerate precipitation kinetics and increase peak hardness through two different ways. In samples aged directly at low temperatures (≤200 °C) after solid solution treatment, cubic close-packed InSb nanocrystals form first. The truncated {002} surfaces of InSb particles induce the preferential nucleation of Guinier-Preston (GP) zones, θ″ and θ′ successively. However, in samples aged at 250 °C, precipitation of θ′ precedes that of InSb particles. Supersaturated vacancies trapped by In and Sb solute atoms/clusters play a critical role in switching the precipitation sequence. By tuning how strong the binding between a vacancy and solute atoms is, we successfully invert the temperature dependence of the precipitation sequence. These findings will contribute to understanding precipitation mechanisms and optimizing precipitate distribution in aluminium precipitation hardenable alloys.

The intercalation of epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) with Ca has been studied extensively, yet precisely where the Ca resides remains elusive. Furthermore, the intercalation of Mg underneath epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) has not been reported. Here, we use low energy electron diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, secondary electron cut-off photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy to elucidate the physical and electronic structure of both Ca- and Mg-intercalated epitaxial graphene on 6H-SiC(0001). We find that Ca intercalates underneath the buffer layer and bonds to the Si-terminated SiC surface, breaking the C-Si bonds of the buffer layer i.e. 'freestanding' the buffer layer to form Ca-intercalated quasi-freestanding bilayer graphene (Ca-QFSBLG). The situation is similar for the Mg-intercalation of epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001), where an ordered Mg-terminated reconstruction at the SiC surface and Mg bonds to the Si-terminated SiC surface are formed, resulting in Mg-intercalated quasi-freestanding bilayer graphene (Mg-QFSBLG). Ca-intercalation underneath the buffer layer has not been considered in previous studies of Ca-intercalated epitaxial graphene. Furthermore, we find no evidence that either Ca or Mg intercalates between graphene layers. However, we do find that both Ca-QFSBLG and Mg-QFSBLG exhibit very low workfunctions of 3.68 and 3.78 eV, respectively, indicating high n-type doping. Upon exposure to ambient conditions, we find Ca-QFSBLG degrades rapidly, whereas Mg-QFSBLG remains remarkably stable., 58 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. Revised text and figures

Precipitation is accompanied by the formation and migration of heterophase interfaces. Using the combined approach of advanced imaging and atomistic simulations, we studied the precipitate-matrix interfaces in various aluminium alloy systems, aiming to resolve their detailed atomic structures and illuminate their role in phase transformations.

Layered indium selenides ($In_{2}Se_{3}$) have recently been discovered to host robust out-of-plane and in-plane ferroelectricity in the $\alpha$ and $\beta$' phases, respectively. In this work, we utilise angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to directly measure the electronic bandstructure of $\beta '-In_{2}Se_{3}$, and compare to hybrid density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In agreement with DFT, we find the band structure is highly two-dimensional, with negligible dispersion along the c-axis. Due to n-type doping we are able to observe the conduction band minima, and directly measure the minimum indirect (0.97 eV) and direct (1.46 eV) bandgaps. We find the Fermi surface in the conduction band is characterized by anisotropic electron pockets with sharp in-plane dispersion about the $\overline{M}$ points, yielding effective masses of 0.21 $m_{0}$ along $\overline{KM}$ and 0.33 $m_{0}$ along $\overline{\Gamma M}$. The measured band structure is well supported by hybrid density functional theory calculations. The highly two-dimensional (2D) bandstructure with moderate bandgap and small effective mass suggest that $\beta'-In_{2}Se_{3}$ is a potentially useful new van der Waals semiconductor. An insight into the electrochemical stability of Mg surfaces is of practical importance for improving the corrosion resistance of Mg as well as its performance as a battery electrode. The present paper employs first-principles density functional theory simulations to study the electrochemical stability of magnesium surfaces in aqueous environments. A number of electrochemical reactions that describe the interactions between the Mg(0001) surface and water were analyzed. It was verified that water dissociation is favored upon the Mg surface, in agreement with recent works; however, it is also shown that the previously unstudied Heyrovsky reaction may play an important role in controlling the surface stability. Furthermore, it was found that the surface stability also crucially depends on the concentration of adsorbed hydroxyl groups. Specifically, the surface work function was determined to vary as the function of hydroxyl coverage, which has ramifications for the catalytic behavior of the Mg surface. The i...

The environment generally increases the rate of fatigue crack growth in aluminium alloys by an order of magnitude due to environmental moisture that dissociates on the fracture surface to release atomic hydrogen causing some form of hydrogen assisted cracking or embrittlement. However, to date there is still uncertainty in the mechanism by which hydrogen increases the rate of crack growth. To further investigate this, classical molecular dynamic simulations were performed on a nanoscale crack in a block of pure aluminium with two hydrogen pre-charged configurations, namely, in-plane and adsorbed atomic hydrogen subjected to either cyclic unidirectional and hydrostatic strains. It was found that in-plane hydrogen combined with high stress produced a hydrogen filled amorphous zone at the crack tip resulting in quasi-cleavage like separation. Our results reveal that the production of the amorphous zone under cyclic loading significantly increased the rate of crack growth, indicative of hydrogen embrittlement, while adsorbed hydrogen had little effect on the extension of these nanocracks.

Magnesium (Mg) metal has been widely explored as an anode material for Mg-ion batteries (MIBs) owing to its large specific capacity and dendrite-free operation. However critical challenges, such as the formation of passivation layers during battery operation and anode-electrolyte-cathode incompatibilities, limit the practical application of Mg-metal anodes for MIBs. Motivated by the promise of group XIV elements (namely Si, Ge and Sn) as anodes for lithium- and sodium-ion batteries, here we conduct systematic first principles calculations to explore the thermodynamics and kinetics of group XIV anodes for Mg-ion batteries, and to identify the atomistic mechanisms of the electrochemical insertion reactions of Mg ions. We confirm the formation of amorphous MgxX phases (where X = Si, Ge, Sn) in anodes via the breaking of the stronger X-X bonding network replaced by weaker Mg-X bonding. Mg ions have higher diffusivities in Ge and Sn anodes than in Si, resulting from weaker Ge-Ge and Sn-Sn bonding networks. In addition, we identify thermodynamic instabilities of MgxX that require a small overpotential to avoid aggregation (plating) of Mg at anode/electrolyte interfaces. Such comprehensive first principles calculations demonstrate that amorphous Ge and crystalline Sn can be potentially effective anodes for practical applications in Mg-ion batteries., Comment: 29 pages, 6 figures

We employ first-principles calculations based density-functional-theory (DFT) approach to study electronic properties of partially and fully edge-hydrogenated armchair boron-nitrogen-carbon (BNC) nanoribbons (ABNCNRs), with widths between 0.85 nm to 2.3 nm. Due to the partial passivation of edges, electrons which do not participate in the bonding, form new energy states located near the Fermi-level. Because of these additional bands, some ABNCNRs exhibit metallic behavior, which is quite uncommon in armchair nanoribbons. Our calculations reveal that the metallic behavior is observed for the following passivation patterns: (i) when B atom from one edge, and N atom from another edge, are unpassivated. (ii) when N atoms from both the edges are unpassivated. (iii) when C atom from one edge, and N atom from another edge, are unpassivated. Furthermore, spin-polarization is also observed for certain passivation schemes, which is also quite uncommon for armchair nanoribbons. Thus, our results suggest that ABNCNRs exhibit a wide range of electronic and {magnetic }properties in that the fully edge-hydrogenated ABNCNRs are direct band gap semiconductors, while partially edge-hydrogenated ones are either semiconducting, or metallic, while simultaneously exhibiting spin polarization, based on the nature of passivation. The atomic structure of the Al2Au η precipitate phase in an Al-0.2 at. %Au alloy is investigated using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy together with first principles and elasticity theory calculations. We find experimentally that precipitates above a certain thickness exhibit the cubic crystal structure of the equilibrium phase η. However below that thickness precipitates adopt a tetragonal distortion of the cubic structure of η, which can be regarded as an intermediate η′ phase and allows full two-dimensional coherence for very thin precipitates (up to two unit cells' thick). Despite the structural similarities of the bulk structures of η and θ′ (Al2Cu) precipitate phases, the former displays interfacial structures that differ markedly from those recently observed in θ′. This can be attributed to the much lower defect energy in aluminium of solute Au compared with solute Cu. Both first-principles and elasticity theory calculations are in good agreement with our experimental observations.

Group-15 elements phosphorus, arsenic, antimony and bismuth offer the prospect of serving as functional alloying elements for developing high-capacity alloy anodes for sodium-ion batteries (NIBs). Here we obtain concentration-dependent electrochemical properties of sodium (Na) alloys with group-15 elements using first principles calculations. Since Na intercalation in these alloys is accompanied by a substantial volume expansion that can lead to mechanical failure and loss of capacity, we have also obtained a full set of concentration-dependent elastic properties for a single crystal as well as a polycrystalline microstructure. We find that sodiation of these alloys results in their significant elastic softening by as large as 60%. In contrast to the group-14 alloys that are also being explored as anodes of NIBs, the elastic softening in group-15 alloys varies in a non-monotonic manner with Na concentration, and more importantly, the maximum degradation of elastic properties does not necessarily occur at full sodiation. Our results provide crucial insights into the electrochemical and mechanical response of these alloys to Na intercalation, thus contributing to the design of failure-resistant architectures of high capacity NIBs.

Magnesium (Mg) dissolution is distinct from other engineering metals, as Mg can support cathodic hydrogen evolution on its surface during anodic polarisation. The phenomenon of cathodic hydrogen evolution upon anodically polarised Mg is characterised by the rate of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) increasing with anodic polarisation, a phenomenon called the negative different effect (NDE). Mg has a tendency to aggressively corrode in aqueous solutions, impairing its application as a durable engineering material or a predictable electrode material, which is also influenced by the NDE. Over the last century a number of different theories have sought to explain the NDE. However, recent progress in research upon Mg utilising contemporary methods including advanced electrochemical techniques, on-line elemental analysis and cross-sectional electron microscopy, have not only refined the understanding of Mg dissolution, but discredited almost a century of alternate theories. During anodic polarisation, a bilayered MgO/Mg(OH)2 film forms on Mg, appearing as a dark region on visual inspection. This film gradually occupies the bulk of the previously pristine Mg surface, and importantly sustains (and enhances) the HER. This phenomenon of cathodic activation may also be catalysed by an enrichment of noble elements or impurities on the Mg surface, which could play an important role in promoting the HER. A phenomenological model for the dissolution of Mg encompassing the current opinion of many researchers is presented herein.

The Al-Ag system is thought to be a well-understood model system used to study diffusional phase transformations in alloys. Here we report the existence of a new precipitate phase, zeta, in this classical system using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The zeta phase has a modulated structure composed of alternating bilayers enriched in Al or Ag. Our in situ annealing experiments reveal that the zeta phase is an intermediate precipitate phase between GP zones epsilon and gamma prime. First-principles calculations show that z is a local energy minimum state formed during Ag clustering in Al. The layered structure of zeta is analogous to the well-known Ag segregation at the precipitate-matrix interfaces when Ag is micro- alloyed in various aluminium alloys., This is the preprint before paper submission. Accurate modeling of the mechanobiological response of a Traumatic Brain Injury is beneficial toward its effective clinical examination, treatment and prevention. Here, we present a stress history-dependent non-spatial kinetic model to predict the microscale phenomena of secondary insults due to accumulation of excess calcium ions (Ca[Formula: see text]) induced by the macroscale primary injuries. The model is able to capture the experimentally observed increase and subsequent partial recovery of intracellular Ca[Formula: see text] concentration in response to various types of mechanical impulses. We further establish the accuracy of the model by comparing our predictions with key experimental observations.

Motivated by recent experimental reports of zirconium porous coordination networks (PCNs) [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 14690–14693], which have demonstrated a good stability and CO2 adsorption capacity, we investigate the influence of flue gas impurities and functional groups on the performance of PCN frameworks in selective CO2 capture. Using a combination of grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations and first-principles calculations, we find that O2 and SO2 impurities in flue gas have a negligible influence on CO2 selectivity in all PCN frameworks. However, because of strong electrostatic interaction between H2O molecules and the framework, CO2 selectivity decreases in all PCN structures in the presence of water impurities in the flue gas. Our studies suggest that the PCN-59 framework can be a good candidate for selective CO2 separation from a predehydrated flue gas mixture.

Atomic hydrogen (H) was introduced into steel (AISI 1018 mild steel) by controlled cathodic pre-charging. The resultant steel sample, comprising about 1 ppmw diffusible H, and a reference uncharged sample, were studied using atomic emission spectroelectrochemistry (AESEC). AESEC involved potentiodynamic polarisation in a flowing non-passivating electrolyte (0.6 M NaCl, pH 1.95) with real time reconciliation of metal dissolution using on-line inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The presence of absorbed H was shown to significantly increase anodic Fe dissolution, as evidenced by the enhanced detection of Fe2+ ions by ICP-OES. We discuss this important finding in the context of previously proposed mechanisms for H-effects on the corrosion of steels.

The potential for graphene coatings to serve as a barrier to aqueous corrosion has not been widely studied. Herein we report the electrochemical response of graphene-coated nickel and copper, where by a graphene layer was shown to substantially reduce the corrosion rate.

A first principles many-body approach is employed to calculate the band structure and optical response of nanometer sized ribbons of SiC. Many-body effects are incorporated using the GW approximation, and excitonic effects are included using the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Both unpassivated and hydrogen passivated armchair SiC nanoribbons are studied. As a consequence of low dimensionality, large quasiparticle corrections are seen to the Kohn-Sham energy gaps. In both cases quasiparticle band gaps are increased by up to 2 eV, as compared to their Kohn-Sham energy values. Inclusion of electron-hole interactions modifies the absorption spectra significantly, giving rise to strongly bound excitonic peaks in these systems.The results suggest that hydrogen-passivated armchair SiC nanoribbons have the potential to be used in optoelectronic devices operating in the UV-Vis region of the spectrum. We also compute the formation energies of these nanoribbons as a function of their widths, and conclude that hydrogen-saturated ribbons will be much more stable as compared to the bare ones., 18 pages, 7 figures (included)

Nanoribbons are quasi one-dimensional structures which have interesting electronic properties on the basis of their edge geometries, and width. We studied the electronic properties of hydrogen and fluorine-terminated zigzag BNC nanoribbons (BNCNRs) using a first-principles based density functional theory approach. We considered BNCNRs that were composed of an equal number of C-C and B-N dimers; one of the edges ends with an N atom and opposite edge ends with a C atom. These two edge atoms are passivated by H or F atoms. Our results suggest that hydrogen-terminated BNCNRs (H-BNCNRs) and flourine-terminated BNCNRs (F-BNCNRs) have different electronic properties. H-BNCNRs exhibit intrinsic half-metallic behavior while F-BNCNRs are indirect band gap semiconductors. Chemical functionalization of BNCNRs with H and F atoms show that BNCNRs have a diverse range of electronic properties.

For developing lithium (Li)-ion batteries with large energy densities and high rate capabilities, it is crucial that electrode materials show good reactivity with charge carrying Li ions, and simultaneously allow for their fast transport. Using first principles density functional theory calculations, here we investigate the interaction of Li with the edges of monolayer as well as multilayer silicene and identify the low energy Li binding sites and the pathways for Li diffusion. Both Li binding and diffusion are found to be significantly controlled by the morphology of the silicene edges. We show that among known structural forms of silicon, monolayer silicene edges provide the strongest binding with Li. The energy barriers for Li diffusion on monolayer silicene nanoribbons are generally very low (0.14–0.26 eV), and in particular, zigzag edges can allow for up to 80 times faster diffusion than on a silicene monolayer. Our results indicate that monolayer silicene nanoribbons terminated with zigzag edges can provide promising candidate materials for the negative electrodes of Li-ion batteries.

A nonlinear model using the phase-field approach is developed to study microstructural evolution during the growth of strained heteroepitaxial multilayers. The strain from the buried layers is observed to influence the nucleation of islands in subsequently deposited strained layers. The patterns obtained during the evolution of multilayers are determined by the interplay of strain relaxation and deposition flux leading to formation of coordinated, stacked islands in the low flux regime and planar growth in the high flux regime, in agreement with the experimental observations.
