CHILDREN with autism spectrum disorders , *AUTISM spectrum disorders , *SCHOOL children , *EDUCATIONAL attainment , *TEENAGERS , *HOMOGENEITY - Abstract
Adaptive behavior (AB) concerns skills that enable individuals to be independent. It may be affected by different diagnoses, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This study's objective was to investigate AB differences between children and adolescents aged 4 to 21 with ASD only, ASD with other health conditions, and those with typical development and to verify the effects of sociodemographic variables on AB outcomes among individuals with ASD. The sample comprised the caregivers of 309 children and adolescents aged 4 to 21 assigned to a non-clinical group (n = 181) and two clinical subgroups: one for ASD only (n = 47) a nd t he o ther f or A SD w ith c omorbidities (n = 81). ANOVA and T-tests were performed, followed by a bootstrap process to ensure the normality and homogeneity of results. Significant deficits were found in the individuals diagnosed with ASD in all three domains of AB. A significant difference was found in the practical domain between the clinical subgroups. The respondents' educational level and the type of school children and adolescents attended affected the conceptual domain. Sex, on the other hand, only showed an effect in the practical domain. The conclusion is that individuals with ASD present differences in the three domains of adaptive behavior, and sociodemographic characteristics also play a role. However, further studies considering other variables that may influence the findings are needed, to ensure greater reliability of the results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Mental health is one of the current pillars of global health; therefore, it is considered an essential factor in the wellbeing and quality of human life. The dramatic growth in the incidence and prevalence of mental disorders has brought about a burden of silent and unsustainable disease for healthcare systems, especially in younger age groups such as children and adolescents. Although major depressive disorder, anxious syndrome, and conduct and eating disorders are some of the most frequent in this age group, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is also an entity of interest affecting between 5% and 10% of children. There exists a pharmacological treatment for this condition, and it is based on stimulant and nonstimulant medications. Evidence of the highest quality has recently demonstrated that children and adolescents who were administered ADHD medications had a higher risk of some cardiovascular event compared to those who were not. Considering the impact and relevance of ADHD in the child and adolescent populations at present, as well as the use of drugs for its control, it is imperative to have evidence of the highest quality for decision-making in clinical practice. To date, there is no evidence in Spanish that has synthesized and analyzed this phenomenon. Based on the foregoing, the objective of this review is to analyze the most recent evidence of the association between cardiovascular risk and pharmacotherapy in pediatric patients with ADHD. A literature search was conducted using the search terms "Cardiovascular Risk," "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder," and "Pediatrics," in addition to synonyms, which were combined with the operators "AND" and "OR," in the PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and MEDLINE databases. After reviewing the most recent literature, it was identified that the quality of the current evidence regarding the association between increased cardiovascular risk secondary to pharmacotherapy in children and adolescents with ADHD is very low, heterogeneous, and fragmented. Nevertheless, the trend suggests that there may be a potential risk of the alteration of hemodynamic parameters, essentially heart rate and blood pressure, without involving the frequent or significant occurrence of serious cardiovascular adverse events. However, the evidence suggests continuous monitoring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CHILD labor , *LABOR policy , *GOVERNMENT policy , *JUSTICE , *RESEARCH methodology - Abstract
The main objective of this research is to analyze how public policies in Brazil are interconnected to prevent and eradicate child labor. It seeks to understand the legal protection against the exploitation of child labor, explore the Program for the Eradication of Child Labor and the National Policy related to it, and examine the responsibilities of the entities of the Rights Guarantee System in combating this issue. The central question of the research is: how does intersectoral coordination of public policies for this purpose occur in Brazil? The initial hypothesis suggests that there is a shared responsibility between the bodies of the Rights Guarantee System, organized through care, protection and justice policies, enabling joint and networked action through the National Plan and the Child Labour Eradication Programme, aimed at combating the causes and effects of child labour exploitation. The method used was deductive and monographic, using documentary and bibliographic research techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Aiming to present the actions related to the Health on School Program (HSP) in the city of Chapecó (Brazil) between 2019 and 2021, this text highlights the integrated effort of the intersectoral working group, composed of representatives of the secretariats of primary education, health, and a university, to create a permanent agenda based on the promotion of belonging, dialogue and actions related to the HSP, respecting the main demands of the territories. Even with the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, different strategies were implemented in the remote format, particularly mentioning the insertion of teachers and students from a medical course to prepare and offer actions in the city's schools. Based on these actions, the understanding of how fundamental the longitudinal and integrated work between representatives of different institutions in the education and health sectors, with support from the university, is for the HSP to be a priority in schools, with belonging and adequacy to the most specific demands of the collectivities. This article craves to investigate the presence of children and teenagers in contexts of intimate or domestic feminicide on the Paraná state, as well as to understand the treatment of court sentences for these groups. Therefore, based on empirical data, the collected information is divided into two groups: (1) what is the profile of the victim’s descendants – and if they are or aren’t common with the feminicide defendant –, especially regarding the age group and the existence or not of aggravation resulting from interventions at the crime scene; and (2) whether or not the court decision in the case considers, in any way, the presence of descendants. The results point to a differential treatment offered by the criminal justice system that has different consequences for perpetrators of femicide, but also produces a diverse decision-making repertoire for situations involving the presence, intervention and aggravation involving children and teenagers in femicide contexts.

- Abstract
Foundation: bronchial asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in childhood. The guidelines for diagnosis and treatment are governed by severity, level of control and quality of life, however, there is no evidence that demonstrates its statistical association. Objective: to measure the association degree between the severity of bronchial asthma, control level and quality of life in children. Methods: cross-sectional study, carried out from January to December 2022, in a sample of 189 patients with a bronchial asthma confirmed diagnosis. The analyzed variables were: age, sex, severity, level of control and quality of life. Statisticians, absolute frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean and standard deviation were calculated. The Chi-square test (p<0.01) was used to measure association and the V-Cramer coefficient was used to evaluate the strength of the association. Results: the mean age was 9.17 years (SD ± 0.67). Males predominated, representing 53.54%. Intermittent asthma (39.15%), partial control level (59.79%) and high quality of life (50.26%) prevailed. When relating severity with level of control, the association statistician indicated X2=190.461 (VC= 0.662); in the case of severity and quality of life, X2=252.673 (VC=0.762); and between level of control and quality of life, X2=66.733 (VC=0.401). Conclusions: there was a strong association between severity of bronchial asthma-level of control and between severity of asthma-quality of life; as well as a moderate association between level of control-quality of life. Introduction: The suicide attempt in children and young populations is a serious health problem in Cuba and the world. Objective: To characterize sociodemographic and epidemiologically the patients aged 6 and 18 with suicide attempt. Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study of 145 children and adolescents was carried out, who were admitted to Dr. Antonio María Beguez César Southern Children Teaching Hospital in Santiago de Cuba due to suicide attempt, during 2018. Each patient's individual medical records constituted the source of information and demographic and epidemiologic variables were selected. Results: The females showed the highest risk of suicide attempt (27.9 for each 10 000); likewise, the 15 to 18 age group (64.8%) and the psychoactive drug ingestion (84.1%) as a method to try to kill oneself, because it was easily accessible, prevailed. Family conflicts (60.6%) and the lack of family support (46.2%) were notable among the main factors associated with suicidal behavior. Conclusions: Children and adolescents in this series came from families with conflicts and domestic violence, which, along with the lack of the family support, identified in their environment, could have influenced the suicide attempt. CHILD mental health services , *ELECTRONIC health records , *MENTAL health services , *MUNICIPAL services , *INTELLECTUAL disabilities - Abstract
Introduction: Since May 2019, access to child and adolescent mental health services in the city of Porto Alegre has been managed through a regulatory system called sistema de regulação assistencial (GERCON). The aim of this study is to describe the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of users referred to a Child and Adolescent Psychosocial Care Center (Centro de Atenção Psicossocial Infantojuvenil [CAPSi]) in the first two years of GERCON. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Data were retrieved from electronic medical records of children and adolescents referred for their first consultation at a CAPSi in Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, from May 2019 to April 2021. Results: Most of the 134 users were male (59.8%), self declared white (69.7%), from Porto Alegre (87,9%) and with an initial diagnostic hypothesis of Mental retardation (28,9%), Behavioral and emotional disorders with onset usually occurring in childhood and adolescence (24,2%) e Mood disorders (20,3%). The mean age was 13.4 years and the median was 15 years. The rate of absenteeism in the first appointment was 24.7%. Conclusion: Most users referred to the CAPSi HCPA were male, teenagers, born in Porto Alegre and with the initial diagnostic hypothesis of neurodevelopmental disorders. There is a high rate of absenteeism. When planning interventions for children and adolescents who need CAPSi care, it is important to consider the nosological profile and sociodemographic characteristics, as well as thinking about strategies to reduce absenteeism. Background: Technology-dependent children and adolescents are recurrently admitted to intensive care units. These admissions prompt the need for follow-up care to maintain these children's and adolescents' health. Objective: To identify the demographic and clinical profile of technology-dependent children and adolescents at the time of hospital discharge from a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Methodology: This is a quantitative, documentary, and retrospective study based on medical records of technology-dependent children/adolescents admitted to the PICU of a teaching hospital in southern Brazil. Results: The study observed a predominance of white male children up to one year of age coming from the pediatric emergency room, with a history of conditions originating from the perinatal period, the use of long-term medication, and the prevalence of diseases of the respiratory system and congenital malformations. Conclusion: This group represents a challenge for healthcare services. In addition to the current diagnosis, past complications can affect the prognosis. Implementing care action plans that consider the needs of children/adolescents and their families is recommended to ensure comprehensive care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To analyze the scientific literature on the impact of oral health education programs for children and adolescents. Methods: In terms of the research question, we used the model Population - children and adolescents; Concept - education; and Context - oral health. This review verified studies on oral health education of children and adolescents from 2019 to 2022, in the Pubmed and Web of Science databases. Inclusion criteria were in vivo experimental and epidemiological studies. Exclusion criteria were studies in children with special needs and in vitro, qualitative studies, case reports, case series, review studies, study protocols, and conference abstracts. Studies were checked for duplication in Rayyan software. Results: The search in the databases returned 1350 references (Pubmed=275; Web of Science=1075), including 40 articles. All studies reported an improvement after the application of oral health education programs, regardless of the methodology (face-to-face or technology-guided mode). Based on this result, motivating activities were created online through explanatory videos, on the topics: dental caries, tooth brushing, and the importance of fluoride for oral health, aiming at future research. Conclusion: Both face-to-face and technology-guided oral health education programs had a positive impact on the oral health knowledge of children and adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: to map mental health care for children and adolescents, its flows, lines and connections based on the articulation of the Psychosocial Care Centers for Children and Adolescents (Centros de Atenção Psicossocial Infantojuvenil, CAPSi) and Primary Health Care (PHC). Method: a qualitative and cartographic research study conducted between August and December 2017 in a municipality from Rio Grande do Sul. The study participants were CAPSi and PHC professionals. Results: the cartographic experience with the rhizomatic network made it possible to monitor CAPSi's articulation with PHC services; planning and sharing care according to workers' collective action, and also the "knots" and challenges of the child and youth mental health network. Insecurity to deal with the demand, lack of knowledge and the need for training as a support modality are challenges mentioned by PHC professionals for networked assistance. Conclusion: care-related arrangements can articulate/share the assistance provided, evoking a "rhizomatic network" of connections, flows and varied lines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To analyze leprosy cases in children under fifteen years old. Methods: Field study, quantitative, cross-sectional, historical and descriptive series, with 48 leprosy cases from 2009 to 2018 from Rondonópolis (MT). Data collection used medical records of the Specialized Assistance Service and home visits. Descriptive statistics and chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used; significance level of 5%; odds ratio and confidence intervals were calculated. Research approved by the Research Ethics Committee (CAAE: 97441618.2.0000.8088). Results: The cases predominated in 2013 (18.8%), male (52%), age group 10 to 14 years (54.2%), multibacillary (64.6%) and tuberculoid (64.6%). It was possible to verify a significant statistical association between operating class and family income (p <0.0434) and year of diagnosis and multibacillary classification (p <0.0189). Conclusions: The case profile and associated factors indicate high transmissibility of the disease and the difficulty in early diagnosis in the city under study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 vaccines , *VACCINATION complications , *VACCINATION of children , *TYPE 2 diabetes , *HEALTH facilities - Abstract
Objective. This study aimed to describe and critically evaluate the COVID-19 vaccination program for high-risk children in Curacao and provide information about important factors such as parents' vaccination hesitancy and effective strategies for communicating and delivering information about vaccination. Methods. This was a cross-sectional study. It was important to identify children aged 12--17 years who were at high risk of severe COVID-19 infection because of the limited medical facilities on the island; children considered to be at high risk were those with diseases such as obesity, hypertension or diabetes mellitus type 2. These children or their caregivers were invited by their pediatricians to be vaccinated as part of a program run by the Public Health Department of Curacao. These high-risk patients were vaccinated between 30 May 2021 and 25 February 2022 in designated child-friendly spaces, with a pediatrician present for guidance and reassurance. Children received the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine at the recommended dose for their age. The primary outcome was a description and evaluation of the attendance for vaccination. The secondary outcomes were side effects after vaccination for the age groups 12--15 years and 16--17 years. Reasons for refusal or nonadherence were also registered. Results. Altogether 51% (24/47) of those aged 16--17 years who were invited were vaccinated compared with 42% (26/69) of those aged 12--15 years who were invited. Altogether, 46% of these high-risk children were vaccinated compared with 48% of children aged 12--17 years without risk factors. In our population, most patients did not experience any side effects and if they did, the side effects were mild. No cases of myocarditis or pericarditis were observed. A lack of trust in the vaccine and a lack of prioritization of vaccination when scheduling daily activities were important factors in refusal and nonadherence. Conclusions. To organize a successful vaccination program in a small community with limited resources for treating high-risk children it is crucial for medical professionals to provide reliable information. Public health initiatives should focus on assuaging parents' fears about vaccines. In addition, ensuring there is good cooperation between doctors and the Public Health Department can help to make implementation successful. Finally, involving pediatricians and using dedicated areas for vaccinating children can help build trust with parents and caregivers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: to describe the therapeutic itinerary of children/adolescents with cancer and their families. Method: qualitative descriptive study carried out with 11 mothers and one grandmother of children/adolescents undergoing cancer treatment, guided by the theoretical framework of the Health Care Systems Model. Data were collected from March to September 2019, through semi-structured and audio-recorded interviews, submitted to Morse and Field content analysis. Results: for the family, the path taken throughout the process of searching for diagnosis and cure was characterized by suffering and ambiguous feelings. Throughout the therapeutic itinerary, each family established their way of acting, perceiving, communicating, relating and making decisions. Final considerations: knowing the therapeutic itinerary of families of children/adolescents with cancer can guide assertive nursing interventions and support the development of strategies that improve the early diagnosis of the disease, favoring a better prognosis. Objective: To identify and summarize the possible associations between screen time and low back pain in children and adolescents. Data source: Systematic searches were performed in five electronic databases (Lilacs, Scielo, Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science) on 01/25/2021, complemented by manual searches in reference lists and on Google Scholar, looking for original scientific articles that included Brazilian observational studies; whose samples had children and/or adolescents aged between 6 and 19 years, without specific clinical conditions, and that presented analyses of associations between indicators of screen time and nonspecific low back pain, based on regression models. Data synthesis: Nine cross-sectional studies whose samples had adolescents were included. Of the 18 analyses identified, nine reported risk relationships between the variables of interest. More specifically, risk associations were found in two studies that evaluated adolescents exposed to at least three hours using cell phone or tablet, and watching television per day. Also, instruments, cut-off points adopted, and screen equipment evaluated were diverse. Conclusions: Even though most of the risk associations were borderline from the statistical point of view, we found a higher frequency of risk associations between screen time and nonspecific low back pain in adolescents exposed to screen time for at least three hours a day. In addition, further longitudinal studies with samples composed of children should be conducted across the country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aim of this current report was to present a critical review of the use of cannabidiol (CBD) in the treatment of refractory epilepsies in the pediatric population. Data source: Literature review was carried out in the Medline (PubMed), Cochrane, and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) databases with the descriptors “Cannabidiol” and “Epilepsy.” The search was not limited by the date of publication, language, or study design. A total of 69 articles were included in the review. Data synthesis: The efficacy of CBD in treating epileptic seizures has been confirmed by randomized controlled trials for Lennox– Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome, and tuberous sclerosis complex. The incidence of side effects reported in subjects of the studies is high. However, most studies indicate a good safety profile and tolerance to the drug, with most of the adverse effects being mild to moderate and transient. Conclusions: There is no consensus on the release of CBD as a therapeutic tool by the drug regulatory agencies worldwide. However, the use of CBD is promising since it has presented satisfactory results in crisis control in well-designed studies. In addition, this drug has a good safety and tolerance profile. However, further studies with a long follow-up period are needed to confirm its usefulness and the long-term safety in pediatric patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
