What differences are there, according to teachers' opinions, in school leadership practices between male principals (MPs) and female principals (FPs) in urban primary schools in Chile? A national survey has been done to address this topic, which was answered by the principal and five teachers in 381 urban primary schools. Following Leithwood's school leadership four-category model, 14 practices were considered and measured. Data were analysed by statistical procedures, including the decision tree technique, chi-squared automatic interaction detection (CHAID). Findings showed that in 9 out of 14 practices, FPs have a significantly more favourable evaluation from teachers. Data confirmed that, when compared to other personal traits of principals or school features, gender is the strongest independent variable related with leadership practices. Nonetheless, this advantage occurs in an overall scenario in which both FPs and MPs engage unevenly with the leadership practices across the dimensions of the model. This study does not aim to explain the female advantage, but to show the shape of leadership differences by gender regarding theoretically relevant practices. Nevertheless, its data allow ruling out some possible hypotheses for interpreting those differences. The article suggests that further research is needed to theoretically explain the reasons behind differences in leadership practice by FPs and MPs.

Purpose: This paper aims to describe the levels and type of contingency faced by school principals in Chile and the way certain aspects of the Chilean school system result in a greater or lesser presence of these contingencies. Design/methodology/approach: The results reported here are based on the application of a structured questionnaire to 381 elementary school principals in Chile. A "Leadership Contingency Index" was created to analyze the extent and characteristics of this phenomenon, which was complemented with a multiple regression analysis to observe the variables that influence the levels of contingency. Findings: This study has shown that the main contingencies faced by school leaders in Chile revolve around the relationship between actors: assist families, relationship with and among students and resolution of school staff problems. Also shows that the level of contingency faced by principals is strongly conditioned by the socio-educational context of the school and is not related to the individual characteristics of the leaders. This level of contingencies is significantly higher in the public system, although the most recurrent contingencies are the same in each type of school administration (public, private subsidized and privately funded schools). Originality/value: This paper addresses an important but relatively unexplored dimension in specialized research on leadership: variable contingencies under which the leadership role is performed daily, including significant gaps between schools. Understanding and analyzing school leadership from the perspective of the complexity of tasks currently faced by principals, many of them highly unpredictable, ensures a realistic view of the possibilities and limitations of leadership in action and, consequently, provides better tools to strengthen the school leadership role and its contribution to improving student learning.

The article analyzes the recent evolution of school leadership in Chile between 2009 and 2019, a decade of significant intensification in the country's school leadership policies, comparing principals' characteristics, working conditions and leadership practices, as reported by school principals and teachers. Data comes from a survey applied in both years to principals and teachers in nationally representative samples of urban primary schools. While reports of some characteristics and working conditions of principals have changed, no significant variation occurred in teachers' perceptions of principals' leadership practices. The article discusses policy´s capacity to motivate principals' practice change at the local level.

The COVID crisis has caused that the way of teaching classes in schools must be reinvented, but it has also transformed other dimensions of relationship between teachers and students. This article collects qualitative information regarding how high school teachers have developed actions to interact with their students, as well as the vision that the latter have regarding whether said actions increased their trust in them. The information was collected through semi-structured interviews conducted online with 36 teachers and 36 students in 6 selected public high schools in Santiago Chile. The analysis distinguished the actions developed by teachers to support students regarding material deprivation of their families or their emotional affectation, and others that promote remote academic activities. The results show that, along with restricting interactions destined for classes, teachers opened or intensified virtual opportunities for individualized relationships around dimensions of the students' lives that were usually left out of face-to-face interaction. The actions that most managed to advance student trust in their teachers were linked to benevolence, and their concern for their personal situation or that of their classmates. It is more doubtful, however, that greater trust has developed in terms of the competence of teachers to promote academic learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
