In this paper, a distributed catchment-hydrology model and a physically based lake hydrodynamic model were used to simulate the large-scale and highly dynamic lake catchment system of Poyang Lake, in the middle reach of the Yangtze River basin, China. The simulation of the hydrodynamics of the lake is a significant extension to previous efforts to simulate Poyang Lake's considerable variability in lake extent and flow rates. Further, the combination of the distributed catchment-hydrology model and the lake-hydrodynamic model, applied to a highly dynamic and large-scale system, is a rare attempt to develop a physically based management model of this complexity and scale. Model calibration and validation were undertaken to evaluate the model's performance and to enhance its effectiveness in simulating catchment discharges, lake water levels, lake water surface areas, and lake flow patterns. The results showed a satisfactory agreement with field observations, with Nash-Sutcliffe efficiencies of 0.71-0.84 for catchment discharges, 0.88-0.98 for lake water levels, and 0.80 for lake outflows during the calibration period. The Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency values for the validation period, ranging from 0.62 to 0.97, were largely consistent with the calibration values. Further investigation of the results showed that the modeling approach simulated adequately the lake hydrodynamics in terms of the flow fields within the lake and the seasonal changes in the lake water surface area. The outcomes of this paper will benefit future modeling efforts by providing a tool for predicting the hydrology of Poyang Lake and its catchment under climate variability and land-use changes. The paper analyses the range of lake management organizations (LMOs) established in China and proposes management recommendations for different lake types and contexts. Based on functions, regional coverage and sectoral focus, nine LMO patterns are identified, ranging from existing agency approaches in which there is no specific lake focus or institutional responsibility to comprehensive and powerful lake basin authorities. LMO development in China faces many challenges, including a preoccupation with organizational form rather than function and objectives, duplication with existing agency functions, and insufficient lake basin management and trans-jurisdictional coordination. We therefore propose that LMOs should be tailored to specific situations and problems, drawing distinctions between plateau, urban, plain, inland and wetland lakes as well as other contexts. For close to a decade China has been implementing ‘eco-compensation’ mechanisms to address water-related ecosystem issues. This paper examines China’s approach to eco-compensation through experience in the Lake Tai watershed. Four typologies of eco-compensation schemes are identified and analysed, primarily through a legal lens. Bosten Lake is an important region of Northwest China that has transformed from a freshwater lake to a saltwater lake since the 1970s. The water quality in the Bosten Lake basin is important for social and economic development, and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are the key indicators of water quality. The land use data, precipitation data and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data with the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) model were used to simulate the N and P exports of the Bosten Lake basin. The spatial and temporal dynamics of nitrogen and phosphorus exports, and the response of nitrogen and phosphorus exports to land use change and precipitation change were analyzed between 2000 and 2015. The results show that the amount of N and P exports increased during 2000–2015, and the N and P exports are mainly distributed around Bosten Lake. The N and P exports are greatly affected by cultivated land, built-up areas and grassland, while they are less affected by other land use types. The high precipitation areas with small exports of N and P are mainly distributed in mountain areas, while small precipitation areas with large exports of N and P are distributed in plains where the cultivated land and built-up areas are concentrated. The InVEST model can be used in Northwest China, and the statistical downscaling of reanalysis precipitation data can be used in the InVEST model to improve the simulation accuracy in the data scarce regions of Northwest China. It has been suggested that population growth dynamics may be revealed by the geographic distribution and the physical structure of ancient bridges. Yet, this relationship has not been empirically verified. In this study, we applied the archaeological records for ancient bridges to reveal the population growth dynamics in the lower Yangtze River Basin in late imperial China. We investigated 89 ancient bridges in Yixing that were built during the Ming and Qing dynasties (AD1368–1911). Global Position System information and structure (length, width, and span) of those bridges was measured during our field investigations. Their distribution density was calculated by ArcGIS. The historical socio-economic dynamics of Yixing was inferred from the distribution and structure of ancient bridges. Based on the above information, the population growth dynamics in Yixing was projected. Our results show that 77 bridges were built in Yixing during the Qing dynasty, which is 6.41 times more than the number built during the Ming dynasty. In the Ming dynasty, bridges were built on pivotal routes; in the Qing dynasty, bridges were scattered across various places. Over the period, the density distribution of bridges shifted northwestward, while the average length and width of bridges decreased. The increasing number of bridges corresponded to population growth, largely attributable to massive clan migration from northern China during the Little Ice Age. The shift in the density distribution of bridges corresponded to the formation of settlements of large clans and the blossoming of Yixing Teapot handicrafts. The scattering and the reduction in average length and width of bridges was due to the dispersal of population and the associated formation of small settlements in the latter period. To simulate daily runoff in the middle and lower regions of the Changjiang (Yangtze River) basin, we used an integrated, spatially distributed model consisting of the Hydrological Simulation Program—FORTRAN (HSPF) and two newly developed submodels, the paddy runoff model (PRM), simulating the runoff from paddy fields, and the lake discharge model (LDM), simulating the hydraulic effect of the Changjiang mainstream on the discharge from neighboring lakes. In the PRM, the ratios of the simulated monthly evapotranspiration relative to the observed potential evaporation were close to or exceeded 1.0 in both of the test subcatchments in the full ponding period with plentiful irrigation water, corresponding to many previous observations of evapotranspiraion rates from paddy fields. Whereas the original HSPF could not consider the backwater effect of the water level in the mainstream, the daily discharge from the lakes simulated by the LDM was dependent on the water level in the mainstream and corresponded to the observed data at the hydrologic stations on the channels connecting each lake with the mainstream, as shown by the daily R2 (Nash–Sutcliffe coefficient) values for Dongting Lake (0.89 in the calibration period, 0.90 in the verification period) and for Poyang Lake (0.84 in the calibration period). For the runoff response from the whole basin simulated by the integrated model, the deviations of runoff volume and values of R2 were -4.2% and 0.95 in the calibration and verification periods and 1.6% and 0.93, respectively, at Datong hydrologic station, which shows the good applicability of this model as a tool for management of water resources in the Changjiang basin.
