The landscape analysis model establishes a quantitative relationship between landscape patterns and pollution processes. The spatial heterogeneity within and between landscapes affects the pollutant transmission process and originates from the superposition effect of terrestrial geographical and morphological characteristics. This study aimed to develop a new method to estimate the pollutant loss rate. From the perspective of the flow process of pollutants entering a water body, the interaction between each landscape unit and adjacent unit during pollutant migration was simulated along the pollutant migration flow path. The role of pollutants affected by external forces in the process of migration could be divided into “promoting” and “hindering.” Four indices were proposed to simulate the pollutant loads entering the lake. The linear coefficients between the load of the pollutants chemical oxygen demand (CODCr), ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) entering the lake and the pollutant load emission weighted by the upstream and downstream confluence ratio index were 0.930, 0.835, 0.925, and 0.795, respectively, and the non-linear variance explanation coefficients were 87.70%, 87.50%, 87.60%, and 84.70%, respectively. When the surface resistance was integrated into the index as a parameter, the linear and nonlinear correlation coefficients were significantly improved. The linear coefficients were 0.952, 0.897, 0.919, and 0.939, respectively, and the non-linear variance explanations were 99.00%, 97.30%, 95.10%, and 97.30%, respectively. The spatial distribution of landscape surface resistance reflects the spatial movement trend of pollutants from different sources. The indices characterizing the promoting and hindering effects could be integrated to calculate the loss rate of pollutant load entering the lake from landscape units at different locations in the basin space.

The high distribution of water resources among provinces in China considerably impacts the development of society and economy in each region. Thus, it is of great practical significance to examine the water resources carrying capacity (WRCC) of each Chinese province. This paper constructs a comprehensive evaluation index system for the WRCC from two aspects: pressure and support. First, it analyzes dynamic changes in the WRCC of 31 Chinese provinces in China by using the decoupling model (DM). Second, it analyzes the key factors that hinder the improvement of WRCC by using the obstacle degree model (ODM). The study found that there are significant inter-provincial differences in China's WRCC. Provinces with greater natural water resources have a higher WRCC. Under the condition of similar natural water resources, WRCC in economically developed provinces is higher. From 2008 to 2015, China's overall WRCC has been increasing. Moreover, three-fifth of China's provinces can be classified as Upward-type (Upward I, Upward II, and Upward III) provinces and their WRCC is in a good state by considering the decoupling type and trend of WRCC in two periods together. The main obstacle factors hindering the improvement of the WRCC are total water resources ([Formula: see text]), water supply per capita ([Formula: see text]), total water supply ([Formula: see text]), forest cover rate ([Formula: see text]), soil erosion control area ([Formula: see text]), water consumption saving ([Formula: see text]), and water usage penetration rate ([Formula: see text]). This study can provide a scientific basis for understanding change trend of WRCC in Chinese provinces and improve their WRCC.

The diversity of Asian horned toads is considered highly underestimated and to contain a large number of undescribed cryptic species. In this work, we describe three new species of Boulenophrys from south China, namely, Boulenophrys yaoshanensis sp. nov. from central Guangxi, Boulenophrys yingdeensis sp. nov. from northern Guangdong, and Boulenophrys yunkaiensis sp. nov. from western Guangdong. These three new species can be distinguished from all recognized congeners by a combination of morphological characteristics and significant genetic divergences. These descriptions increase the number of recognized species of Boulenophrys to 61. In addition, an updated checklist of the Asian horned toads of the subfamily Megophryinae is provided in this study.

Protecting and restoring the degraded arid lakes are globally urgent issues. We document a potential recovery of the dried salt-lake, Lop Nur called "the Sea of Death" which is located at the terminus of the largest inland basin in China, the Tarim River Basin. The changes and relationship of surface water with climate parameters and groundwater in the basin over the last 30 years are analyzed, by using satellite remote sensing and land data assimilation products. We find that with increased surface water in the basin, the groundwater level in Lop Nur began to show an obvious positive response in 2015; and the rate of decline of the groundwater level is slowing down. We argue that after a balance is achieved between regional groundwater recharge and evapotranspiration, the Lop Nur ecosystem will gradually recover. This study shows an encouraging case for the protection and restoration of degraded lakes in dryland regions around the world.

Understanding long-term vegetation diversity patterns and their potential responses to climate and/or human driven processes are important for ecosystem modeling and conservation. Late-Holocene fossil pollen assemblage and associated vegetation diversity estimates provide an opportunity to explore the interactions among vegetation, climate, and human activities. A continuous 2000-year palynological record was obtained from the Beihai Wetland, southwestern China, to represent regional vegetation history, particularly the vegetation diversity changes. The results indicate that regional vegetation was dominated by deciduous broadleaved forest components (e.g. Alnus, deciduous Quercus), which showed a gradual decrease accompanied by expansion of herbaceous taxa (mainly Poaceae) after AD 800. Such progressive decline of forest was attributed to regional deforestation driven by intensified human activities, which was further confirmed by the increasing non-pollen polymorph abundance, particularly an abrupt rise after AD 1350. Vegetation diversity based on the Hill numbers ( N0, N1, and N2) showed a dramatic decline between ca. AD 200–400, which was triggered by regional fire events as shown by increased charcoal abundance from a nearby lake. The vegetation diversity reduced gradually after AD 800, especially the vegetation richness reflected by N0, revealing the transitional process from climate-driven to human-dominated vegetation changes. Minor increases of vegetation diversity occurred during Chinese dynastical transitions, probably due to reduced human activities following war-induced population crises. On the multidecadal scale, variations in vegetation diversity correlated significantly with climate fluctuations (revealed by synthesized temperature of China and stable oxygen isotope record from Dongge Cave) before AD 800, indicating a climate dominant condition. Then, the correlation between vegetation diversity and climate declined after AD 800, representing a progressive transition to human-dominant condition. In addition, the compositional turnover based on DCCA of the fossil pollen assemblage revealed a stepwise decrease, indicating reduced vegetation turnovers under anthropogenic influences.

Nidirana guangxiensissp. nov., a new music frog species, is proposed, based on a series of specimens collected from Mt Daming, Guangxi, southern China. The new species is close to N. yeae, N. daunchina, N. yaoica, and N. chapaensis from southwestern and south-central China and northern Indochina, while the relationships among these species remain unresolved. Nidirana guangxiensis sp. nov. can be distinguished from all known congeners by the genetic divergences in the mitochondrial 16S and COI genes, the behavior of nest construction, the advertisement call containing 6–11 rapidly repeated regular notes, and a combination of morphological characteristics. Furthermore, the Nidirana populations recorded in Guangxi are clarified in this work, providing valuable new information on the knowledge of the genus Nidirana.

It is important to quantitatively analyze the effects of protection of important ecological spaces in China to ensure national ecological security. By considering changes in the ecological land, this study examines the effects of protecting three types of important natural ecological spaces in China from 1980 to 2018. Moreover, considering important ecological spaces and their surroundings yields differences in the effects of protection between internal and external spaces, where this can provide a scientific basis for the categorization and zoning of China’s land. The results show the following: (1) In 2018, the ratio of ecological land to important natural ecological spaces accounted for 92.64%. This land had a good ecological background that reflects the developmental orientation of important ecological spaces. (2) From 1980 to 2018, the area of ecological land in important ecological spaces shrank but the rate of reduction was lower than the national average, which shows the positive effect of regulating construction in natural ecological spaces. The restorative effects of ecological projects to convert farmland into forests and grasslands have been prominent. The expanded ecological land is mainly distributed in areas where such projects have been implemented, and the reduced area is concentrated in grain-producing areas of the Northeast China Plain and agricultural oases of Xinjiang. In the future, the government should focus on strengthening the management and control of these areas. (3) The area ratio of ecological land was the highest in national nature reserves. The rate of reduction in its area was the lowest and the trend of reduction was the smallest in national nature reserves, which reflects differences in the status of ecological protection among different spaces. (4) The ratio of ecological land to important ecological spaces was higher than that in the surrounding external space, and the rate of reduction in it was lower. Thus, the effects of internal and external protection had clear differences in terms of gradient.

Fe as an important redox-active transition metal plays a key role in the carbon cycle of ecosystems. To date, the mechanisms by which Fe affects organic carbon (soil respiration rate [Rs] and dissolved organic carbon [DOC] structure) remain unclear, because most studies only focused on the effect of Fe on soil organic carbon content. To understand these effects, a 30-day laboratory incubation experiment was conducted using forest swamp soils from northeastern China amended with different concentrations of exogenous Fe (no exogenous Fe added [L0], add exogenous Fe at 1 time the soil background value [L1], add exogenous Fe at 2 times the soil background value [L2]). Our results showed that exogenous Fe addition reduced the soil respiration rate by 54.8% during the incubation time. The DOC concentration decreased by 40.5% with exogenous Fe addition during the incubation time. The dissolved organic matter (DOM) characteristic parameters showed apparent variations (p 0.05), including significant increases in the fluorescence and biological index and significant decreases in the humification index, which indicate that exogenous Fe addition reduced humification, which may lead to the increased fixation of dissolved organic carbon. In addition significant increases in tryptophan-like DOM was observed when exogenous Fe addition resulted in a soil Fe concentration of twice the background value (p 0.05). These findings indicate that exogenous Fe addition promotes the production of endogenous soil DOC by microorganisms. Overall, Our study uses three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy techniques combined with the parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) to characterize the dissolved organic matter components in soil samples under exogenous Fe addition conditions, with a view to exploring the differences in the effects of Fe on the DOC concentration and structure of wetland soils, providing a theoretical basis for the mechanisms of soil carbon fixation and soil organic matter transformation in wetland soils.

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is tightly related with extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling of human trabecular meshwork cells (HTMCs). Transforming growth factor-β2 (TGF-β2) can induce ECM remodeling. The aim of the study was to investigate the microRNAs (miRNAs) expression changes of extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from HTMCs treated with TGF-β2. EVs were isolated from HTMCs supernatant cultured for 24 h with TGF-β2. The morphology of EVs pellets was examined by transmission electron microscopy. Nanoparticle tracking analysis used to demonstrate the particle size distribution. Total EVs RNAs were extracted for subsequent miRNA gene chip analysis to investigate differentially expressed miRNAs between the controls and treatment cells. Gene Ontology (GO) annotation, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were used to predict potential target and validate possible functions of the miRNAs. There were 23 miRNAs upregulated and 3 miRNAs downregulated and 469,102, and 94 GO terms involved in biological processes, cellular components, and molecular function for the possible functions of the 26 miRNAs. These findings indicate that TGF-β2 may alter EVs miRNAs expression to participate in the pathogenesis of POAG. They may provide significant information for potential biomarkers for POAG diagnosis and treatment.

Recently, a novel duck-origin goose parvovirus (N-GPV) was reported to cause short beak and dwarfism syndrome in ducks. In this study, we performed complete genome sequencing and analyzed three different duck-derived parvoviruses that infected different breeds of ducks. Phylogenetic trees based on gene sequences indicated that they were classical goose parvovirus (C-GPV), Muscovy duck parvovirus (MDPV), and N-GPV. Furthermore, potential recombination events were found. These results improve our understanding of the diversity of duck-derived parvoviruses in Anhui province, eastern China, and provide a reference for the prevention of associated diseases.

BackgroundDiabetes mellitus (DM) or cognitive impairment (CI) is known to be strongly associated with mortality. DM commonly coexists with CI and proportionally increases with age. However, little is known about the combined effect of cognitive function and diabetes on mortality. This study aimed to evaluate the combined effects of DM and CI on all-cause and cause-specific mortality in Chinese older adults.MethodsThis prospective population-based cohort study was based on the Beijing Elderly Comprehensive Health Cohort Study. A total of 4,499 older adults were included. Cox’s proportional hazard models were utilized to calculate the effect of DM and CI on all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and cancer mortality, and a multiplicative term was introduced to study a potential interaction between DM and CI on outcomes.ResultsDuring a median follow-up of 6.8 years (ranging from 6.6 to 11.7 years), 667 (14.8%) participants died from all causes, 292 from CVD, and 215 from cancer. In the fully adjusted model, participants with coexisting DM and CI had the highest risk of all-cause mortality [hazard ratios (HRs), 3.08; 95% confidence intervals (CIs), 2.30,4.11] and CVD mortality (HRs, 3.85; 95% CIs, 2.60,5.71) compared with individuals with normal cognition and non-DM. We also found a multiplicative interaction between DM and CI in respect to all-cause (HRs, 2.46; 95% CI, 1.87,3.22) and CVD mortality (HRs, 3.15 95% CI, 2.19,4.55). In the diabetic population, CI was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality (HRs, 2.09; 95% CIs, 1.51,2.89) and CVD mortality (HRs, 3.16; 95% CIs, 2.02,5.05) compared with the normal cognition group. Restricted cubic spline revealed a linear inverse association between Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score and all-cause, CVD mortality in the total sample and participants without diabetes. However, a nearly reverse J association was observed between MMSE and mortality from all causes and CVD in the diabetes group.ConclusionThe findings highlighted that cognitive impairment concomitant with diabetes further increases the risk of mortality. In addition to strengthening routine screening of cognitive functioning in older adults with early-stage diabetes, more extensive assessment of prognostic risks has high clinical value for developing comprehensive treatment plans.

Osteoporotic fractures, also known as fragility fractures, are prevalent in the elderly and bring tremendous social burdens. Poor bone quality, weak repair capacity, instability, and high failure rate of internal fixation are main characteristics of osteoporotic fractures. Osteoporotic bone defects are common and need to be repaired by appropriate materials. Proximal humerus, distal radius, tibia plateau, calcaneus, and spine are common osteoporotic fractures with bone defect. Here, the consensus from the Osteoporosis Group of Chinese Orthopaedic Association concentrates on the epidemiology, characters, and management strategies of common osteoporotic fractures with bone defect to standardize clinical practice in bone repair of osteoporotic fractures.

BackgroundThe disease pathology for diabetes mellitus patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) may be diabetic nephropathy (DN), non-diabetic renal disease (NDRD), or DN combined with NDRD. Considering that the prognosis and treatment of DN and NDRD differ, their differential diagnosis is of significance. Renal pathological biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosing DN and NDRD. However, it is invasive and cannot be implemented in many patients due to contraindications. This article constructed a new noninvasive evaluation model for differentiating DN and NDRD.MethodsWe retrospectively screened 1,030 patients with type 2 diabetes who has undergone kidney biopsy from January 2005 to March 2017 in a single center. Variables were ranked according to importance, and the machine learning methods (random forest, RF, and support vector machine, SVM) were then used to construct the model. The final model was validated with an external group (338 patients, April 2017–April 2019).ResultsIn total, 929 patients were assigned. Ten variables were selected for model development. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCROCs) for the RF and SVM methods were 0.953 and 0.947, respectively. Additionally, 329 patients were analyzed for external validation. The AUCROCs for the external validation of the RF and SVM methods were 0.920 and 0.911, respectively.ConclusionWe successfully constructed a predictive model for DN and NDRD using machine learning methods, which were better than our regression methods.Clinical Trial RegistrationClinicalTrial.gov, NCT03865914.

In this study, we first found that the few and sparse meteorological stations used in earlier comprehensive studies of building climate zoning in a complicated terrain area like Chongqing, China, may lead to the inapplicability of building energy efficiency standards in some areas. To address this issue, the study used daily data from 1908 extremely dense surface meteorological stations from 2011 to 2020 in Chongqing, China. In order to conduct fine zoning of building climate in Chongqing, China, GB50176-2016 and ASHRAE standard 169-2021 were employed, respectively. The findings indicated that by using the ASHRAE standard, the entire Chongqing region was classified into five climate zones. The Chongqing region was categorized into three different climate zones using China GB50176-2016: cold zone (CZ), hot summer and cold winter zone (HSCWZ), and mild zone (MZ). Not to be overlooked is the MZ (China’s GB50176-2016)/mixed-humid zone (ASHRAE standard), which is primarily situated at higher elevations in the southeast and northeast of Chongqing. In comparison to the HSCWZ/warm-humid zone, these zones have drastically different building energy efficiency regulations and approaches. According to preliminary projections, improved building climate zoning will to some extent increase building energy efficiency and reduce emissions in Chongqing. Finally, this study case can be replicated in different regions with complicated terrain.

It is challenging to reveal the real-time spatio-temporal change of diversity and abundance of animals in natural systems by using traditional methods. The rapid advancement of new technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and big-data processing, provide opportunities for developing novel technologies for monitoring biodiversity and population abundance of animals with high efficacy and accuracy. In this study, by using a recently developed Intelligent Animal Monitoring System, named "Vector Intelligent Monitoring System (VIMS)", we investigated the real-time diversity and abundance of small mammals in the Banruosi forest, Dujiangyan region, southwest China. To make a comparison of the VIMS with traditional methods, we also surveyed the diversity and abundance of small mammals using wired live traps. Compared to live traps, the VIMS has several advantages such as automatic data collection, intelligent identification of species, data visualization, whole-day and all-weather operation, little disturbance to animals, real-time monitoring, and is capable of revealing more small mammal species. However, the VIMS also has several disadvantages over live traps such as lower trapping efficiency and being more expensive than live traps. Our results suggest that the VIMS can be a complementary method to traditional ones in monitoring the real-time spatio-temporal change of diversity and abundance of small mammals (especially rare species). In addition, the VIMS is useful in monitoring other small animals like small carnivores, birds, amphibians, and reptiles.

The West Liaohe Plain (WLP) is a typical crop-pastoral ecotone of the semiarid area in Northwestern, China. Land use/cover change (LUCC) of the WLP might endanger this ecosystem, triggering long-lasting environmental concerns. LUCC data for China (1980-2020) and hydrometeorological data were analyzed to reveal factors contributing to change and explore sustainable development opportunities. The results show that characteristics of the main land-use types in the WLP have changed significantly, especially cultivated land area, which increased by 15.2% and 6.79% during the periods 1980-1995 and 2000-2020, respectively. Response relationships were observed due to natural (precipitation, temperature, and runoff) and anthropogenic (economy) factors and LUCC. Between 2000 and 2020, the impact of anthropogenic factors on cultivated land was stronger than on grassland at the class and landscape level, using the landscape indices which were selected, including percent of landscape (PLAND), number of patches (NP), largest patch index (LPI), and Shannon's evenness index (SHEI). Expansion of cultivated land from 1990 to 1995 was not only related to anthropogenic factors but also to hydrologicalclimatic factors. The results of this study have the potential to influence sustainable land resource development.

Prehospital delay (time from symptom onset of stroke to the door of a hospital) in patients with stroke is long in China. With the goal of improving public awareness and knowledge of stroke recognition, Stroke 1-2-0 was developed in China as an education program to prompt rapid response to the onset of stroke based on clinical practice in China, and examination of its outcomes is needed.To investigate the association of the Stroke 1-2-0 educational campaign with prehospital delay for patients with ischemic stroke.In a population-based cross-sectional study, all patients with ischemic stroke events were admitted to the Minhang Hospital, which is the only tertiary care hospital with a stroke center that provides acute stroke care in Xinzhuang county, Shanghai, China. The study period was from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2019, and data analysis was performed from January 1 to July 31, 2021.A multifaceted Stroke 1-2-0 educational campaign comprising slides, videos, brochures, and posters distributed in the community.Proportion of patients with hospital arrival within 3 hours and use of an ambulance to seek medical care, as well as the odds of seeking medical attention within 3 hours after the stroke before vs after initiation of the multifaceted educational campaign.A total of 2857 patients (1774 men [62.1%]; mean [SD] age, 69.83 [12.66] years) with stroke were identified, including 503 in the precampaign period and 2354 in the postcampaign period. Following the multifaceted campaign, the median (IQR) prehospital delay time decreased from 18.72 (7.44-27.84) hours to 6.00 (2.00-16.35) hours (P .001). After the implementation of the Stroke 1-2-0 campaign, the proportion of patients with hospital arrival time within 3 hours increased from 5.8% to 33.4% (P .001) and use of an ambulance increased from 3.2% to 30.6% (P .001). In an interrupted time series analysis, the initiation of the Stroke 1-2-0 campaign was associated with significantly increased odds of arriving at the hospital within 3 hours (odds ratio, 8.01; 95% CI, 7.17-8.95; P .001) and use of an ambulance (odds ratio, 9.41; 95% CI, 8.24-10.74; P .001).The persistent multifaceted campaign using the Stroke 1-2-0 program was associated with reduced prehospital delay and improved timely arrival rate and ambulance arrival rate for patients with stroke. These findings suggest that Stroke 1-2-0 can be adopted in other regions of China to possibly improve health outcomes and reduce clinical burdens for all patients with stroke.

Objective The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a major public health crisis, harms individuals’ mental health. This 3-wave repeated survey aimed to examine the prevalence and correlates of suicidal ideation at different stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in a large sample of college students in China. Methods Using a repeated cross-sectional survey design, we conducted 3 online surveys of college students during the COVID-19 pandemic at 22 universities in Guandong, China. The 3 surveys were conducted during the outbreak period (T1: 3 February to 10 February 2020, N = 164,101), remission period (T2: 24 March to 3 April 2020, N = 148,384), and normalized prevention and control period (T3: 1 June to 15 June 2020, N = 159,187). Suicidal ideation was measured by the ninth item of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. A range of suicide-related factors was assessed, including sociodemographic characteristics, depression, anxiety, insomnia, pre-existing mental health problems, and COVID-19-related factors. Results The prevalence of suicidal ideation was 8.5%, 11.0% and 12.6% at T1, T2, and T3, respectively. Male sex (aOR: 1.35–1.44, Ps Ps P Ps Ps Ps Ps Conclusion Suicidal ideation appeared to increase during the COVID-19 pandemic remission period among college students in China. Multiple factors, especially mental health problems, are associated with suicidal ideation. Psychosocial interventions should be implemented during and after the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce suicide risk among college students.

In recent years, due to the intensification of human activities, water ecological problems are gradually increasing. As the third largest freshwater lake in China, Lake Taihu is an important drinking water source for several densely populated cities in China. The prominent water ecological problem in this area is mainly Cyanobacteria Bloom. Cyanobacterial blooms have been erupting which have affected local residents' drinking water and caused losses to the national economy. Based on the interpretation results of MODIS data in the Lake Taihu region from 2004 to 2014, this paper analyzes the main driving factors of cyanobacterial bloom are phosphorus and potassium through the correlation analysis of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and cyanobacteria area, normalizes nutrient, and identifies that the water level of Lake Taihu is the influencing factor of cyanobacterial bloom. A Lake Taihu cyanobacteria bloom hazard function is constructed to quantitatively assess the losses (economic losses) caused by cyanobacterial blooms from 2001 to 2012, supporting for cyanobacteria control management in Lake Taihu.

The social cost of carbon is a tool for assessing the appropriateness of emission reduction measures and climate policy, and is affected by socioeconomic and climatic factors. This study aimed to explore the impact of socioeconomic factors and climate on the social cost of carbon; to this end, this study considered Chinese provinces as the focus of research. This study constructed an integrated framework for carbon emissions considering socioeconomic and climatic factors, which consisted of shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs) and representative concentration pathways (RCPs). Subsequently, social cost of the carbon estimation model was used to calculate the social cost of carbon for China's provinces from 2022 to 2100 under different carbon emission scenarios. The results show that: under most carbon emission scenarios, provinces with a high social cost of carbon are located in the eastern developed region. For instance, Jiangsu and Guangdong had the highest values of 6.31 $/tC. Second, SSPs that are highly dependent on fossil fuels have a high social cost of carbon, which is higher than 60 $/tC in 2022 in China. The social cost of carbon under other SSPs is at a fluctuating value of 40 $/tC. Third, in terms of RCPs, the social cost of carbon for the middle baseline emission scenario (RCP6.0) is considerably lower than that for the high baseline emission scenario (RCP8.0), and the difference between them is 3.7 times that of two medium emission scenarios (RCP6.0 and RCP4.5). Fourth, there is a substantial difference between the dynamic and fixed discount rates in the social cost of carbon in the same scenario. Studying the impact of socioeconomic and climatic factors on the social cost of carbon will help in its regulation and provide a scientific basis for Chinese provinces to optimize climate policies and emission reduction measures.

Encephalitozoon cuniculi (E. cuniculi) is a microsporidian parasite commonly detected in rabbits and can infect humans and cause encephalitozoonosis. And Toxoplasma gondii is a prevalent parasite distributed worldwide and can infect almost all warm-blooded animals, including humans. The aim of the current study was to investigate the seroprevalence of E. cuniculi and Toxoplasma gondii, and risk factors of infection in pet rabbits reared in eastern coastal areas of China (Tianjin, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Fujian). Total 222 blood samples of pet rabbits were collected from local veterinary hospitals. The seropositivity rates of E. cuniculi were 16.22% (36/222) according to an Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Female pet rabbits was significantly higher than that in males (P=0.002), Zhejiang were markedly higher than those in Jiangsu and Shanghai (P=0.017, P=0.022), and cross-breed rabbits were dramatically higher than those in Chinchilla, New Zealand white, Rex (P=0.02, P=0.006, P=0.008). The seroprevalence of T. gondii was 13.06% (29/222) by the method of ELISA. The seroprevalence in Zhejiang was significantly higher than that in Shanghai (P=0.017). No difference in seroprevalence was detected with respect to the gender, age, species, health status, or season. These findings show that E. cuniculi and T. gondii are present and spread in pet rabbits. Therefore, pet rabbits should be considered as an important reservoir of encephalitozoonosis for humans and maybe important implication for public health in eastern coastal areas of China.

Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations were measured in oysters (C. gigas), plankton, and seawater during spring, summer, and autumn in Liaodong Bay (Bohai Sea, China) to elucidate the effects of season, region, and oyster size on metal bioaccumulation in oysters. Metal concentrations were quantified via atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Our study determined that metal concentrations in oysters, plankton, and seawater were the highest in summer, whereas the lowest levels occurred in autumn. Regarding oyster sizes, the highest Pb levels occurred in C3-sized oysters (> 5-cm length), whereas the highest Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn levels occurred in C2 (3–5-cm length) oysters. Sediment resuspension is critical to the internal nutrient loading in aquatic systems. Turbidity is commonly used as an indicator for sediment resuspension and is proved to be highly correlated to wind speed in large shallow lakes. A field observation of wind speed and turbidity was conducted using a portable weather station and a YSI 6600V2-2, and an observation lasting for 39 days was evaluated in this study (the data points with wind speed > 4 m/s account for 75%). The daily average values (DA dataset) as well as daily maximum (MX dataset) and minimum values (MI dataset) were calculated from the instantaneous observations (IN dataset). Correlations in IN dataset were deduced based on machine learning methods and were compared to those obtained from DA, MI, and MX datasets. Furthermore, the correlation in IN dataset was analyzed by using two statistical methods, and from the view of statistical the turbidity is regarded as a variable. Results indicate that the correlations in IN datasets follow the exponential function or power function pattern with a critical wind speed of 6 m/s, Regression on IN dataset revealed that linear regression model had the best performance on predicting the turbidity in test dataset and no significant differences are observed between exponential function and power function pattern. Correlations in DA and MX datasets exhibit higher maximal information coefficient (MIC) than IN dataset and error of turbidity prediction introduced by using these correlations in IN dataset is within the tolerance level. Statistical analysis on the IN dataset shows that a strong relationship exists among the wind speed and expectation of turbidity with a MIC over 0.99, and follows the exponential function or the power function as well with a different critical wind speed of 4 m/s. Over 95% data points fall in the predicted intervals of turbidity for both methods, suggesting a high predicting accuracy.

Anopheles sinensis is widely distributed in Wanning County, it is necessary to understand the spatial distribution characteristics of Anopheles sinensis in order to maintain the elimination of malaria in Wanning. During May and October 2009, we sampled adult mosquitoes at 36 villages within Wanning County on Hainan island, and collected meteorological and geographical data at each sampling site. We used these data to analyze the spatial distribution of adult Anopheles sinensis mosquitoes, and logistic regression analysis was applied to explore the association of the spatial distribution of Anopheles sinensis with the geographical and meteorological factors. We found that the density of Anopheles sinensis showed a significant positive spatial correlation. From May to October, on the whole, the high-density area was located in the central part of Wanning County. But each month there was a relatively high-density cluster, and their location and range were not exactly the same. From east to west, the density of Anopheles sinensis increased initially and then decreased, but from south to north, there were different trends in the periods of May to August and September to October. Logistic regression analysis showed that the main environmental factors related with the distribution of Anopheles sinensis were land use type, soil type, distance to road, air pressure and relative humidity. These analysis results showed that the distribution of Anopheles sinensis had obvious spatial heterogeneity in Wanning County, which was related with geographical and meteorological factors. The mechanism of these environmental factors on the distribution of Anopheles sinensis needs to be further studied.

Given the constraints of energy, environment, and climate change in the process of economic development, transitioning to a low-carbon economy by such means as the construction of low-carbon cities is a feasible approach to a sustainable development pattern that balances energy conservation, environmental protection, and economic growth. Utilizing the data of listed companies in China A-shares market over the period 2007–2016, we treat China’s low-carbon city pilot policy (LCCPP) as a quasi-natural experiment and adopt a difference-in-differences approach to explore the effect of LCCPP on the total factor productivity (TFP) of firms. Firm TFP is found to be negatively associated with the implementation of LCCPP. Our mechanism analysis reveals that the LCCPP stimulates innovation by firms in China, consistent with the weak Porter hypothesis. Moreover, the negative relationship between the LCCPP and TFP holds more strongly in larger firms or those located in the eastern region.

Sex differences in the long-term prognosis of symptomatic hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) patients undergoing alcohol septal ablation (ASA) remain unclear, especially in the Chinese Han population.This cohort study included 320 HOCM Chinese Han patients who underwent ASA because of symptomatic left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction. Patients were grouped according to sex: females (mean±standard deviation age [SD] 50.7±6.8 years) and males (mean±SD age 52.6±7.3 years). Individuals were followed over the long term.Pre-procedure, women had more symptoms (New York Heart Association [NYHA] class III-IV 67.3% vs 56.3%, p=0.03), more atrial fibrillation (23.5% vs 14.6%, p=0.047) than men. Transient complete atrioventricular block after ASA was more common in woman than in men (34.0 vs 23.4%; p=0.048). Residual LVOT gradient, post-procedural residual left ventricular wall thickness, NYHA functional class, and adverse arrhythmic events were comparable between the two groups. The 10-year survival rate (77% vs 89%, p=0.037) and the annual adverse arrhythmic event rate (1.3% vs 0.4%, p0.01) following ASA were significantly worse in women compared with men. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a significantly lower survival in women compared with men (p=0.023). In multivariable modelling, female sex remained independently associated with higher all-cause mortality (hazard ratio, 1.12; 95% confidence interval, 1.08-1.27; p=0.03) when adjusted for age, NYHA class III-IV symptoms, and other cardiovascular comorbidities.Female patients with HOCM undergoing ASA tended to have more severe symptoms and adverse arrhythmic events. The 10-year survival rate after ASA was significantly worse in women compared with men with HOCM. Sex may need to be considered as an important factor in the clinical management of patients with symptomatic HOCM.

Background Currently, several commercial molecular tests have been developed for reclassifying thyroid nodules with indeterminate fine needle aspiration cytology. These tests are quite expensive and not available in China. Previous studies demonstrated a very high prevalence of the BRAF V600E mutation in Asian people. A high incidence may result in a robust sensitivity. We conducted this study to determine the prevalence of BRAF V600E mutation and its ability to reclassify cytologically indeterminate thyroid nodules in the Chinese population. Methods Between January 2016 and October 2018, consecutive patients who underwent a fine needle aspiration procedure and agreed to provide materials for molecular analysis in our hospital were recruited in this study. All were followed up until they had a thyroidectomy and a final pathological diagnosis or until January 2019 (those did not have surgery). Results A total of 1960 patients were included in this study. Until January 2019, 1240 patients underwent surgery. Using histopathological diagnosis as a gold standard, the overall sensitivity and specificity of the BRAF V600E mutational analysis for the discrimination of benign nodules from cancer in thyroid fine needle aspiration samples were 83.3% (81.0–85.3%) and 96.0% (77.7–99.8%), respectively, with an area under the ROC curve of 0.90 (95% CI 0.85–0.95, P Conclusion The BRAF V600E mutation is highly prevalent in the Chinese population and can accurately complement cytopathology in the guidance of thyroid surgery. A definition of the Goniurosaurus yingdeensis group is presented in this study, on the basis of morphological and phylogenetic analyses based on a series of additional specimens. Moreover, a new species of this group, Goniurosaurus variussp. nov., is proposed for northern Guangdong Province, China. The new species can be distinguished from the other two congeners of this group by the following unique characters: one or two internasals; enlarged supraorbital tubercles absent; paravertebral tubercles between limb insertions 27–29; dorsal tubercle rows at midbody 21–24; ten precloacal pores in males and absent in females; body bands with black spots; iris orange-red.

It is increasingly believed that soil nematodes play an important role in the soil community and have a pronounced influence on the evaluation of soil health and the monitoring of soil food web changes. Soil aggregates provide habitable pore space and resource availability for soil organisms. The distribution of soil nematodes, which are relatively small soil fauna, may be related to the degree of soil aggregates. Soil nematode communities were studied with different soil components: large macro-aggregates ( 2 mm), medium macro-aggregates (2-1 mm), small macro-aggregates (1-0.25 mm), and micro-aggregates ( 0.25 mm) extracted from the same crop variety plantings (Sichuan tea) of different ages (19 years, 26 years, 34 years, and 56 years) in Sichuan province, southwestern China, in 2018. The results showed that the tea plantation with 26 years of cultivation was more suitable for the propagation of nematode communities, and the numbers of total nematodes were highest in the 2 mm fractions. Compared with other tea plantations, the Margalef index (SR) of 26-year-old tea plantation was significantly higher than that within the large and medium macro-aggregates, and the maturity index (MI) was higher in the large and small macro-aggregates in the 26-year-old tea plantation. In the large macro-aggregates, the value of functional metabolic footprints decreased with the tea plantation age. In addition, the functional metabolic footprints increased with the increase in soil aggregate size. Our finding suggests that nematode communities are limited by resource availability and resource quality played an important role in determining nematode communities. Moreover, the soil food web was degenerated with the age of tea cultivation. Therefore, in the study area, it is necessary to pay attention to the rational allocation and application of organic fertilizer in the late stage of tea planting, so as to maintain the soil fertility and soil food web structure of the tea garden.

When medical diagnostic difficulties occur at local hospitals, seeking high-quality services across regions becomes a priority for many patients. Traditional statistical methods in health care are unable to account for spatial characteristics such as outflow place or distributions of disease type and patient ages in the context of an increasing number of cross-regional groups; thus, these methods are incapable of studying service utilization differences among hospitals. From a geographic perspective, we analyzed the spatial characteristics of cross-regional patient groups who travelled from other places to Beijing and the spatial decay patterns in the actual service utilization of different hospitals in Beijing by using geographic calculations, geographic visualizations, and distance decay functions. We found the following results: (1) It is feasible to study patients’ cross-regional mobility from a geographical perspective. Through interdisciplinary integration, we can explore laws and conclusions that cannot be examined by traditional statistical methods in health care. (2) The characteristics of cross-regional patients who travelled from other places to Beijing were as follows: (a) Most patients came from northern China, and neoplasm treatment was the main demand of cross-regional patients; (b) patients 40–65 years old were the main cross-regional treatment group, and the average age of patients from northern regions and certain eastern coastal cities was relatively high. (3) The exponential distance decay function was the best of all five distance decay functions in fitting the distribution of cross-regional patient mobility to hospitals of different levels, types, and functional areas. The results of applying this function and the centrality calculation method showed that hospital service utilization was least affected by distance and that average radial distances (AR) were greatest in tertiary hospitals (distance decay coefficient β = 0.0786, AR = 664.70 km), traditional Chinese medicine hospitals (β = 0.0752, AR = 743.52 km), and hospitals in urban extension areas (β = 0.0782, AR = 693.29 km). Our results can serve as a reference for research concerning the allocation of medical resources and patients’ choices regarding medical treatment.

The safety of lake ecosystems on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) has attracted increasing attention, owing to its unique location and ecological vulnerability. Previous studies have shown that the aquatic systems on the QTP have been polluted to varying degrees by trace elements. However, little is known of the distribution and sources of trace elements in lakes in the northeast QTP. Here, 57 sediment samples were collected from six lakes (Dasugan Lake, Xiaoqaidam Lake, Kreuk Lake, Toson Lake, Gahai Lake and Xiligou Lake) in the Qaidam Basin, northeast QTP, and the trace elements (V, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Ba, Tl, Cd, Pb, and U) were analyzed. The results indicated that Ba, Zn, V, and Cr had a higher content and a wider distribution relative to the other tested elements. Correlation coefficient matrix results showed that the trace elements in the study area were strongly correlated, revealing their source of similarity. Self-organizing maps (SOM, an artificial neural network algorithm) results indicated that the degree of pollution in Xiaoqaidam Lake was the highest, and that of Dasugan Lake was the lowest. Furthermore, all sampling points were clustered into four categories through K-means clustering. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) results indicated that atmospheric deposition and anthropogenic inputs were the main trace elements sources in these lakes, followed by traffic emission and geological sources. Collectively, trace elements of six lakes in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau presented high-content and pollution characteristics. This research provides a scientific basis for better water environment management and ecological protection on the QTP.

Industry is the largest sector for energy consumption and pollution emissions in China. Thus, improving industrial eco-efficiency is necessary for China to achieve sustainable development. Based on panel data from 31 industrial sectors from 2001 to 2015, a three-stage data envelopment analysis model was used to empirically explore industrial eco-efficiency and its influencing factors from the perspective of industrial heterogeneity. The results show that the overall level of industrial eco-efficiency in China is not high, first declining and then rising during the study period. Low eco-efficiency was mainly due to low scale efficiency. After removing the influences of external environmental factors and noise, industry profit rates, ownership structures, and foreign direct investments were all significantly and positively correlated with eco-efficiency. Environmental regulations were significantly and negatively correlated, while the intensity of research and development exhibited no linear relationship. Industrial heterogeneity significantly affects eco-efficiency. Capital-intensive industries had the highest eco-efficiencies, followed by resource-intensive industries and labor-intensive industries, respectively.
