Background: Triglyceride glucose index (TyG index) was related with both type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and hypertension (HTN). Prospective studies linking the TyG index to the incidence of T2DM and HTN comorbidity remain unclear. This study aimed to to explore the longitudinal association between TyG and new-onset T2DM with HTN. Methods: 4,434 subjects (1249 males and 3185 females) without initial T2DM and HTN were followed up for 7 years. This study was conducted from November 2011 to August 2018 in the Gucheng, Laoshan and Jinding communities of Beijing. The incidence of T2DM with HTN during the 7-year follow-up was identified as the endpoint. The TyG index was divided into four quartiles: the < 25% level, the 25–50% level, the 50–75% level and the ≥ 75% level. The relationships between the TyG index and T2DM with HTN were evaluated by Cox proportional hazards regression models. Results: During 7 years, the augmented trend of T2DM with HTN was observed in the participants. After adjusting for all confounding factors, compared with those in the lowest quartile of TyG index, the population in the highest quartile of TyG index had a higher risk of T2DM with HTN (hazard ratio (HR), 2.878; 95% confidence intervals (95% CI), 1.230–6.731, P = 0.015), however, the association remained significant only in the female population (HR 2.753, 95% CI, 1.061–7.139, p = 0.037). The TyG had superior predictive ability of increased risk of T2DM with HTN for the populations of older age (≥ 65 years) (HR 2.694, 95% CI 1.212–5.989, p = 0.015), higher eGFR (≥ 90 mL/(min·1.73 m2)) (HR 2.603, 95% CI 1.164–5.818, p = 0.020) or obesity (BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2) (HR 2.547, 95% CI 1.001–6.478, p = 0.020). Conclusion: A population with a higher TyG index level was more likely to have an enhanced incidence of T2DM and HTN comorbidity. Introduction: Obesity in patients undergoing hemodialysis is common. However, there is limited information on the relationship between obesity types defined by the combined body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) classification criteria and all-cause mortality in Chinese hemodialysis patients. Our objective was to determine the association between obesity types and all-cause mortality in hemodialysis patients. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study including patients from 11 hemodialysis centers in Beijing. According to the World Health Organization's standards, patients were classified into 2 categories with WC and 4 categories with BMI and then followed up for 1 year. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to compare the difference in the cumulative survival rate in different BMI and WC groups. A multivariate Cox regression analysis was used to determine the association between different types of obesity and all-cause mortality. Results: A total of 613 patients were enrolled, the mean age was 63.8 ± 7.1 years old, and 42.1% were women. Based on the baseline BMI, there were 303 (49.4%) patients with normal weight, 227 (37.0%) with overweight, 37(6.0%) with obesity, and 46 (7.5%) with underweight. Based on the baseline WC, 346 (56.4%) patients had abdominal obesity. During a median follow-up of 52 weeks, 69 deaths occurred. Kaplan-Meier plots demonstrated a significant association of BMI categories (log-rank χ2 = 18.574, p<0.001) and WC categories (log-rank χ2 = 5.698, p=0.017) with all-cause death. With normal BMI and non-abdominal obesity as a reference, multivariate Cox regression analysis results showed that obesity (HR 5.36, 95% CI, 2.09-13.76, p<0.001), underweight (HR, 5.29, 95% CI, 2.32-12.07, p<0.001), normal weight combined with abdominal obesity (HR 2.61, 95% CI, 1.20-5.66, p=0.016), and overweight combined with abdominal obesity (HR 1.79, 95% CI, 1.03-3.73, p=0.031, respectively) were significantly associated with higher risks of all-cause mortality. To investigate the prevalence and clinical significance of the dense fine speckled (DFS) pattern in a large‐scale cohort of Chinese patients. Data on the antinuclear antibody (ANA) and extractable nuclear antigen (ENA) autoantibody obtained from 165 498 patients who attended Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2019 to December 2021 were retrospectively analysed. The prevalence of the DFS pattern was 1.14%, and it mainly appeared in young patients (≤24 years old). A higher positive rate of the DFS pattern was observed in patients with dermatosis (18.12%) and systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARDs) (13.53%). The DFS pattern titre was mostly low or medium (≤1:160). A higher titre was associated with an increased risk of SARDs (p <.001), dermatosis (p =.015) and pulmonary disease (p =.016). In 37 patients with ENA autoantibody positivity, anti‐SSA antibody was the most common (2.55%). If the low titre (<1:160) or the DFS pattern with negative ENA autoantibody were to be used as exclusion criteria for SARDs, the diagnosis would have been missed in 42 or 77 patients, respectively. The prevalence of the DFS pattern was low in ANA test samples and was more common in patients with dermatosis and SARDs, but the titre was usually higher in patients with SARDs. There was no evidence that the DFS pattern could be used as an exclusion criterion for SARDs diagnosis. Objective: Our study aims to clarify the role of estradiol and leptin in breast cancer risk and prognostic assessment in postmenopausal Chinese women. Design: The serum circulating estradiol and leptin level was detected by ELISA. Then the correlation between estradiol, leptin level, and clinical characteristics was analyzed using Fisher's exact test. Next, the Kaplan-Meier model was used to analyze the association between estradiol, leptin, and prognosis of postmenopausal breast cancer patients in our cohort and the TCGA dataset. Setting: The study was conducted at the National Cancer Center, Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and Peking Union Medical College. Patients: A total of 182 postmenopausal breast cancer patients and 111 healthy subjects from January 2010 to August 2010 were included in the analysis. Another 702 cases with breast cancer were retrieved from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database for subsequent analysis. Main Outcome Measure: Serum circulating estradiol and leptin level. Results: The level of estradiol was significantly higher (P <0.001) but the level of leptin had no significant difference (P = 0.764) in postmenopausal breast cancer patients compared with healthy subjects. The level of estradiol and leptin was not significantly different between estrogen receptor (ER) positive and ER-negative groups (P >0.05). Estradiol was significantly correlated with tumor T stage (P = 0.002) and leptin was significantly associated with perineural invasion (P = 0.014). In addition, the disease-free survival of patients with a high level of estradiol was significantly shorter (P = 0.025) but leptin tended to be a protective factor for overall survival in TCGA analysis (P = 0.038). Conclusion: Circulating estradiol and leptin played important roles in the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer even in low-estrogen nations with an independent expression of ER status. High circulating estradiol was a poor prognostic factor and leptin may be a protection signal in Chinese postmenopausal patients with breast cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Background: In the modified ATP III definition for metabolic syndrome (MS), the cut-off values for central obesity were set to ≥90cm for male and ≥80cm for women. Recently, a new Chinese definition for central obesity was set to ≥90cm for male and ≥85cm for women according to the corresponding BMI value of 25kg/m2. Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the optimal WC cut-off points to reflect the cluster of multiple risk factors for adults in Beijing. Method: The data collected during the surveillance of risk factors for non-communicable diseases in Beijing 2005 were used, with a total of 16,711 adults studied. Subjects with two or more components from the modified ATP III definition other than central obesity were considered to have multiple risk factors. Results: The optimal WC cut-off points were 87cm in men and 80cm for women. When applied the WC advised definition for MS, the age-standardized prevalence was 38.0% for male and 32.3% for women, which is significantly higher than using the original one for men (34.7% vs 32.3%, P <0.001). Conclusion: The present study indicated that optimal waist circumference cut-off points were lower than that proposed in the modified ATP III definition, especially for men. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Summary: To determine the relative frequency of odontogenic tumors (OTs) in a Chinese population, files from the department of oral pathology, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, were systematically reviewed for all OTs during the period 1985–2006. Diagnosis of each case was confirmed according to the WHO histological classification for OTs published in 2005. The relevant clinicopathological data of these OTs were analyzed and compared with those of previous series. The present series represents approximately 3.92% of all pathologic specimens accessioned in our department over the same period of time. Of the 1309 OTs, 94.04% were benign and 5.06% were malignant. The most frequent benign tumor was keratocystic odontogenic tumor (38.73%), followed by ameloblastoma (36.52%) and odontomas (6.11%). The prevalence of the remaining tumors appears to be rare. In conclusion, odontogenic tumors are in general uncommon lesions in this Chinese population. The present study identifies some similarities between our data and the previous studies from Africa and Asia and some differences in comparison to the reports from American and European countries. Background/Aim. High-altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE), which normally occurs at altitudes higher than 3,000 m, is a potentially fatal disease due to hypoxia. The role of mitochondrial genomes in determining an individual's susceptibility to HAPE has not been determined yet. However, a number of genetic polymorphisms have recently been found to be overrepresented in HAPE patients. The majority of published genome-wide association studies have investigated only a small number of top-ranking single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)/genes by the overview of nuclear DNA and considered each of the identified SNPs/genes independently. Little research has been conducted on mitochondrial genomes in relapsing HAPE patients by genomewide association studies. Methods. To identify biological pathways important to HAPE occurrence, we examined approximately 500,000 SNPs genome-wide from 10 unrelated cases of relapsing HAPE and we compared the SNPs in these cases with those in the Chinese in Beijing, China population (45 controls) to discover the association between genotypes and HAPE susceptibility among the mitochondrial function-related genes. We used the FUMA platform to expand those SNPs to selected candidate SNPs. Results. A total of 369 candidate SNPs, 4 lead SNPs, 4 genomic risk loci and 5 mapped genes were obtained. The 7 mapped genes were ADAMTS9-AS2, NEK1, CLCN3, C4orf27(HPF1), RP11-219J21.2, ANKRD26 and YME1L1. Conclusion. This study confirms the association of ADAMTS9-AS2, NEK1, CLCN3, C4orf27(HPF1), RP11-219J21.2, ANKRD26 and YME1L1 with HAPE, which may provide future targets for the treatment of this disease. Abstract: Objective: To identify risk factors associated with the presence of diabetes. Methods: A diabetes survey was conducted in 2801 citizens aged 35–79 years living in 10 communities in Beijing, China. Participants were recruited by residents committees. 75g oral glucose tolerance test was performed to define diabetes according to the WHO 1999 criteria. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) for diabetes. Results: The prevalence of diabetes and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and/or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) was 24.2% and 20.4% in men, respectively and 19.4% and 19.0% in women, respectively. The multivariate adjusted OR (95% CI) corresponding to a one standard deviation increase in age (year) was 1.52 (1.25,1.86), waist circumference (cm) 1.35 (1.12,1.63), serum triglycerides (mmol/L) 1.29 (1.09,1.54) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (mmol/L) 0.74 (0.61,0.91) in men and 2.03 (1.77,2.33), 1.21 (1.06,1.38), 1.34 (1.21,1.49), 0.74 (0.66,0.84) in women, respectively. For diabetes family history they were 2.46 (1.66,3.65) in men and 2.39 (1.84,3.10) in women, and for hypertension 1.14 (0.77,1.68) in men and 1.54 (1.18,2.01) in women. There were no significant associations between the presence of diabetes and occupation, education level, household income, leisure time physical activities, current smoking and drinking status. Conclusions: Age, diabetes family history, obesity, dyslipidemia and hypertension were all associated with the presence of diabetes in this study population. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
