The voice plays a paradoxical role – it is inclusive because everyone has one, and it is exclusive as it is used to falsely separate 'singers' and 'non-singers'. A new choral movement has emerged, with a low threshold for participation and inclusive practices, where one of the early offerings was Everyone Can Sing (ECS) in Norway. As a low-threshold choir, it focused on solid vocal training as well as the advanced features of the music. This study investigates to what extent this blended choral pedagogy is realised and differs from more traditional choirs. A quantitative analysis of ECS singers (N = 495) was done, comparing it with a more experienced choir (N = 81) and elite choirs (N = 106). The results show that a blended approach in low-threshold-choirs is possible and that attention to musical refinement grows with experience. Dialogue surrounding gender and identity in choral ensembles is multi-faceted and complex. Although many gendered ensembles can serve as a safe space for singers, they can essentialize the experience of gender and ignore the intersectional nature of identity, thus marginalizing trans, gender-expansive, and BIPOC singers. In this paper, we introduce an intersectional feminist framework and use it to define, address, and problematize ideas surrounding empowerment, shared experiences, and gender essentialism. Themes and discussion points from this study were explored in a project that documented the experience of one women’s choir as they examined their identity as an ensemble and the suitability of their gendered name in reflecting that perceived identity. Analysis of data from individual interviews, group discussions, and anonymous surveys revealed a desire to preserve women’s empowerment and women’s spaces while promoting gender inclusivity. Throughout, we consider implications for gendered ensembles and highlight the necessity for gender research to have an intersectional approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to examine what effect performer's bodily movement may have on listeners' (N = 103) perceptions of a choral ensemble performance. A 34-voice choir was audio/video recorded performing two different musical excerpts. Each excerpt was recorded twice, once with movement and once without movement, for a total of four audio/video recordings. Additionally, the audio from each of these recordings was isolated and used as a separate stimuli. Participants were presented each stimuli (movement/non-movement, audio only/audio + video), and asked to rate each for expressivity and style. The factor of audio/video was not found to have consistently significant differences in rating. However, there was a consistent interaction effect between these two stimuli, suggesting that both the visual and auditory differences when using movement conversely effected the listeners' perception. College major did not prove to be a consistent indicator, but membership in a choral ensemble significantly impacted ratings. Implications may include a greater effect of movement when viewed by the listener than simply what can be perceived in the aural stimuli alone. The purpose of the article is to reveal the peculiarities of communication between Mykola Lysenko-conductor and amateur singer Yakiv Hulak-Artemovskyi. Research methodology. The following methods have been used in the research: exploratory, analysis and generalisation method to reveal the communication of the eminent master with this specific member of the choir, based on the latter's memories and epistolary. Scientific novelty of the research. The article reveals for the first time certain aspects of Mykola Lysenko's work with the choir and the conductor's collaboration with the amateur singer Yakiv Hulak-Artemovskyi, his faithful assistant, who became the "right hand" of the conductor. Conclusions. Yakiv Hulak-Artemovskyi is a person from Mykola Lysenko's circle, extremely responsible and devoted. Understanding Mykola Lysenko's business, his impracticality in financial affairs, at the same time his great love for his native people and cheering for their future, he agreed to become a voluntary assistant of the artist. The relationship of Mykola Lysenko - an outstanding Ukrainian composer and conductor, with Yakiv Hulak-Artemovskyi - an amateur singer and choir manager must be a model of deep respect, tolerance, and an example of devoted service to the cause of Ukrainian choral art. The creative tandem of these caring personalities contributed to coordinated and successful work of the choir, preparation of concert programmes, organisation of tour trips, and the popularisation of the native song among the Ukrainian population. Mykola Lysenko and Yakiv Hulak-Artemovskyi were Ukrainian patriots, highly spiritual personalities, and hardworking people who defended the right of the people to be treated with dignity within or under the conditions of the colonialist policy of the Russian Empire: Mykola Lysenko as a defining cultural figure, whereas Yakiv Hulak-Artemovskyi was an average, but dedicated representative of Ukrainian citizenship. Both faithfully served their native people and the Ukrainian culture. Yakiv Hulak-Artemovskyi respected Mykola Lysenko as a talented artist, admired him as a personality, as well as, his ability to maintain independent views, even in the most difficult times. In turn, Mykola Lysenko valued Yakiv Hulak-Artemovskyi as a singer and head of the choir, and as a reliable assistant and adviser. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investigations of the English Cathedral Choral tradition have ranged from studies of the pedagogical practices and environmental affordances and constraints that support choral excellence to the introduction of female voices into a male-dominated musical practice. Studies of choral participation have investigated the health and wellbeing outcomes of choral participation across the lifespan, and the psychological benefits and life skills of teamwork and leadership that develop in choral settings. These studies have focused on perceptions of current participation. Less is known of the enduring impacts of early choral participation across the lifespan. This study investigates two former cathedral choristers' experience through extended interview and narrative case studies. Both choristers reported participation in the cathedral choir as significant and life-changing, continuing to impact them many years later. Chorister habits of thought and practice including attention to detail, care of others, assuming leadership, and self-discipline were reported to endure in life beyond the choir. Being thrust into the midst of a politically charged policy change introducing female cathedral choristers created life-forming experiences for girls, in what was retrospectively described as a first act of feminism. This research provides insights into the ways in which extra-curricular ensembles and vocal tuition shape possible musical selves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article is devoted to the research of new forms of organization of remote work in choirs. With the introduction of quarantine restrictions, the rhythm of life has changed significantly, which has led to the search for new forms and methods of work. Various methods of introduction of the newest technologies in music education of different levels are considered. The experience of using new teaching methods in professional and educational choirs in schools and universities is analyzed. The influence of new forms of choral creativity on Ukrainian culture in general is determined. Eric Whitaker’s experience in organizing the world’s first virtual choir as an international art project has been studied. Professional, amateur and educational choirs in the pandemic were forced to look for new forms of work organization. This was the impetus for the introduction of new forms of work. A characteristic feature of remote choral rehearsal is the shift of emphasis from collective to individual performance. Awareness of oneself as an integral part of the whole characterizes the positive consequences of remote work. Among the negative consequences of remote work, we can identify low efficiency, depression as a result of loneliness, deterioration of the quality of the material.
