Purpose Methods Results Conclusion To explore the longitudinal changes in retinal and choroidal thickness and their relation with the onset of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in children.Thirty‐eight children with T1DM and 71 healthy controls were included in this 3‐year longitudinal study. Ophthalmic and systemic examinations were conducted on each participant. Retinal and choroidal thickness were measured by optical coherence tomography. Baseline values and changes in retinal and choroidal thickness were compared with DR onset, diabetics without DR and healthy controls. Logistic regression was used to explore the association with DR development.Six children developed DR during the follow‐up period (15.79%) and five of them developed microaneurysms in the parapapillary temporal quadrant. During follow‐up, greater retinal thickening occurred in subjects with DR compared with diabetic participants without DR (p = 0.03) and healthy controls (p = 0.02) in the parapapillary outer temporal section. Compared with the control group, greater retinal thickening was observed in DR subjects in the averaged parapapillary outer ring (p = 0.01), the macular inner temporal section (p = 0.03) and several macular sections (all p < 0.05). Additionally, greater retinal thickening was observed in several parapapillary regions in non‐DR T1DM participants compared with healthy controls (all p < 0.05). The thickness change in the outer temporal parapapillary section was independently associated with DR onset (OR = 1.33, 95% CI 1.01–1.73, p = 0.04).Children with T1DM showed a significant or a trend of increasing retinal and choroidal thickness compared with normal controls over a 3‐year period. The change of retinal thickness in the parapapillary outer temporal section was associated with the development of DR in children with T1DM, suggesting that it could serve as a biomarker for predicting and screening DR in these individuals. To observe the structural changes of retina and choroid in patients with different degrees of myopia. We recruited 219 subjects with different degrees of myopia for best corrected visual acuity, computer refraction, intraocular pressure, axial length (AL), optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging, and other examinations. Central macular retinal thickness (CRT), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), nasal retinal thickness (NRT), temporal retinal thickness (TRT), nasal choroidal thickness (NCT) and temporal choroidal thickness (TCT) were measured by optical coherence tomography. ImageJ software was used to measure the retinal area and choroidal area (CA), and Niblack was used to binarize all OCT images to measure the choroidal vessel area (CVA) and choroidal matrix area (CMA). We found that CRT, SFCT, NRT, TRT, NCT, TCT, CA, CVA, and CMA were significantly reduced in the pathological myopia (PM) group. AL was negatively correlated with NRT, SFCT, CMA, CVA and choroidal stromal index. There was a significant positive correlation between AL and choroidal vascular index. The choroidal vascular index in the PM group was significantly increased compared with the other groups. We established a univariate receiver operating curve to analyze the diagnostic value of all parameters for PM. Spherical equivalent, AL, SFCT, TCT, NCT, CA, CVA, and CMA had high diagnostic value for PM, among which CMA had the highest accuracy. There are changes in choroidal structure in adults with different degrees of myopia. Choroidal thickness, CVA and CMA decrease significantly with the increase of myopia, and are correlated with AL. Background: Ultra-wide-field optical coherence tomography (UWF-OCT) devices have recently been introduced to clinical practice. The goal of this study was to compare choroidal and retinal thickness (CT and RT) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with a healthy control group using UWF-OCT Xephilio S1. Additionally, we sought to determine the relationship between the RT and CT of patients with AMD, measured in different sectors, and their visual acuity. Methods: The study included 104 eyes from 74 participants with dry AMD, 119 eyes from 86 participants with wet AMD, and 85 eyes from 53 healthy controls. Of the participants with wet AMD, 87 eyes received anti-VEGF treatment, 13 were treatment naïve, and 19 had incomplete data. The analyzed measurements were taken in the central area of 3 mm in diameter and two peripheral rings located between 3–9 mm and 9–18 mm diameters. Results. There was no significant variation in the RT in any sector between the three study groups. CT in dry and wet AMD cohorts was significantly lower compared to controls in every sector. Patients with treatment-naïve wet AMD did not demonstrate significant CT loss but had a tendency for lower CT values. Visual impairment in patients with AMD correlated with older age in both subgroups and with smaller RT in the dry AMD subgroup. Conclusions: Values of RT and CT obtained at the mid- and far-periphery with UWF-OCT generally reflect the alterations observed in AMD in the central part of the posterior pole. Background: The goal of the study was to analyze variations in central, perifoveal, and peripheral retinal thickness (RT) and choroidal thickness (CT) in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) measured with ultra-wide-field optical coherence tomography (UWF-OCT). Additionally, correlations between RT and CT in the central, perifoveal, and peripheral sectors and the presence of selected systemic factors were evaluated. Methods: A total of 74 consecutive adult diabetic patients with DME and 75 healthy controls were included. Study participants were divided into three groups: DME patients without panretinal photocoagulation (PRP; 84 eyes), DME patients after PRP (56 eyes), and healthy controls (125 eyes). RT and CT were analyzed in three zones: a central circle of 3 mm diameter (central), a ring contained between a centered 9 mm circle and the central 3 mm circle (perifoveal), and a second, more peripheral ring between centered 18 mm and 9 mm circles (peripheral). Additionally, DME subgroups were analyzed according to the correlation of RT and CT with age, axial length, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), diabetes duration, insulin therapy duration, body mass index (BMI), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) values, intravitreal injection (IVI) count, and the advancement of retinopathy assessed by the simplified diabetic retinopathy severity scale (DRSS). Results: The increase in RT in the far peripheral sectors in DME patients was not significant. The increases in central and perifoveal RT and lower values of CT in PRP-naive DME patients were strongly associated with poorer BCVA. Patients with DME after PRP presented with BCVA improvements significantly related to the number of IVIs. The amount of DME and RT in peripheral sectors were both independent of systemic factors such as BMI, duration of diabetes, duration of insulin intake, retinopathy severity, and HbA1c levels. Conclusions: Peripheral retinal sectors in DME patients are less affected in terms of increase in their thickness compared to central ones. Ultra-wide-field optical coherence tomography (UWF-OCT) has been recently introduced into clinical ophthalmological practice. To date, there are few data on the reference values of the retinal thickness (RT) and choroidal thickness (CT) measured with this technique. This study aimed to analyze the variance in RT and CT in the healthy eyes of white Caucasian patients with UWF-OCT tests performed with the largest available scan size of 23 × 20 mm. The data were analyzed with reference to the patients' age and gender and the axial length of the eyeball. The results of UWF-OCT scanning enabled us to visualize the shape of the retina and choroid in a large portion of the eyeball. Both anatomical entities became significantly thinner at the periphery. The peripheral CT was greater in the upper and temporal sectors; the RT was higher in the nasal compared to the temporal sectors. Both the choroid and retina showed a reduced thickness with age; however, the CT and RT did not show a statistically significant correlation with the axial length after adjusting for age and gender. Age-related variations in thickness were especially prominent in the choroid. The CT in UWF-OCT testing was significantly greater in females, while the RT was greater in males. Objectives: To explore the correlation between the vessel density (VD) of the retina and choroid vascular plexuses and the thicknesses of their respective retinal layers and choroid membranes in participants with severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 42 eyes of 42 participants with diabetes mellitus (DM) and severe NPDR. In addition, 41 eyes of 41 healthy controls were evaluated. Measurements were taken for both groups using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), including the area and perimeter of the foveal vascular zone (FAZ) and the vascular density (VD) in the superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), and choroid capillary (CC). These measurements were compared with the retinal thickness (RT) of the inner/ intermediate retinal layers and choroidal thickness (CT). The study evaluated the correlation between RT or CT and VD in the respective vascular networks, namely superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), or CC. Results: The inner RT and VD in all plexuses were significantly lower in the severe NPDR group than in the healthy controls. Furthermore, the FAZ area and perimeter were larger in the severe NPDR group. Inner RT was correlated with VD in the SCP group (r=0.67 and r=0.71 in the healthy control and severe NPDR groups, respectively; p<0.05). CT negatively correlated with VD in the CC (r=- 0.697 and r=-0.759 in the healthy control and severe NPDR groups, respectively; p<0.05). Intermediate RT significantly correlated with VD in the DCP of the severe NPDR group (r=-0.55, p<0.05), but not in the healthy control group. Conclusions: Retinal or choroidal thickness strongly correlated with VD. Methods: Two schools, one in Shanghai (at sea level) and one in Shigatse, Tibet (more than 4000 m above sea level), were selected. Refractive error was measured by an autorefractor instrument and subjective refraction, and mCT and mRT were measured at three concentric circles by optical coherence tomography. Student's t-test, Chi-square test, and multiple linear regression analyses were used to analyze the data. Results: A total of 1114 participants (657 and 457 in Shanghai and Tibet, respectively) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The average age of the participants was 18.81 ± 1.10 years, and 44.34% were males. The spherical equivalent (SE) of adolescents in Shanghai was significantly lower than that of adolescents in Tibet (-4.14 ± 2.37 D and -2.12 ± 1.87 D, P < 0.01). The prevalence of myopia and high myopia among adolescents in Shanghai (94.52%, 19.48%) was significantly higher than those among adolescents in Tibet (44.74%, 2.41%) (P < 0.01). The mCT of Tibetan adolescents was significantly thicker than that of Shanghai adolescents (295.80 ± 62.46 μm and 218.71 ± 61.42 μm, P < 0.01), especially the central mCT. The mRT of Tibetan adolescents was also thicker than that of Shanghai adolescents (301.42 ± 23.26 μm and 281.04 ± 12.24 μm, P < 0.01). Conclusions: Compared with Shanghai adolescents, the choroid of Tibet adolescents is thicker, and the myopia prevalence is lower. It is speculated that increased altitude is associated with the thickening of mCT and a low myopia prevalence.

Objective: The aim was to investigate the changes in retinal and choroidal thickness and vascular density in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Methods: Twenty-nine patients with SLE (29 eyes) and 25 control subjects (25 eyes) were enrolled. SLE activity was assessed using the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI). Retinal thickness (RT), inner retinal thickness (IRT), outer retinal thickness (ORT), choroidal thickness (ChT), retinal superficial vascular density (SVD), retinal deep vascular density (DVD), choriocapillary vascular density (CCVD), foveal avascular zone (FAZ), superficial FAZ (sFAZ), and deep FAZ (dFAZ) were measured using OCTA. The retinal and choroidal thickness and vascular density between the control group and SLE group were compared. The relationships between SLEDAI scores and the retinal and choroidal thickness and vascular density in SLE group were analyzed. Results: The SVD was significantly increased, and the DVD and CCVD were significantly decreased in the SLE group compared to the control group (p <.05). The results of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) showed that the area under the curve (AUC) values of SVD, DVD, and CCVD were 0.873, 0.729, and 0.727, indicating a high accuracy in discriminating patients with SLE from controls. Correlation analysis showed that the SLEDAI scores were positively correlated with dFAZ (r = 0.589, p =.001) and FAZ (r = 0.451, p =.018), and negatively correlated with DVD (r = −0.491, p =.009) and CCVD (r = −0.521, p =.005). Conclusions: DVD and CCVD were decreased in the SLE and might be related to the disease activity. SVD, DVD, and CCVD may hold promise in the discovery of biomarkers for diagnosing SLE. This prospective study aimed to evaluate the impact of Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) V4c implantation on retinal and choroidal morphology in patients with high myopia. A total of 97 eyes from 52 high myopic patients who underwent ICL V4c implantation were followed up for 12 months. Preoperative and postoperative evaluations included comprehensive ophthalmic assessments and enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) to analyze changes in central retinal thickness (CRT), retinal volume (CRV), choroidal thickness (ChT), total choroidal area (TCA), luminal area (LA), and choroidal vascular index (CVI). Repeated measures mixed-effects models were used for comparing pre- and postoperative measurement variables and exploring relationships among age, axial length (AL), spherical equivalent refraction (SER), and postoperative retinal and choroidal changes, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Follow-up assessments were conducted at various time points, with participation rates ranging from 21% to 98%. Baseline characteristics showed a median age of 26.7 years, −10.14 diopters of SER, and an AL of 27.44 mm. Throughout the 12-month follow-up, CRT and 3.0 mm CRV consistently increased compared to the baseline, with statistically significant rises observed at postoperative day 1, week 1, and month 12. Most ChT measurements, including subfoveal ChT, declined over the 12 months, except at postoperative 6 months. Horizontal and vertical TCA and LA values significantly increased throughout the follow-up, except for month 6. After surgery, both horizontal and vertical CVI parameters exhibited an increase compared to the baseline, with some changes reaching statistical significance. Correlation analysis performed by repeated measures mixed-effects models showed that no relationship was found between age, AL, and SER and changes in postoperative retinal parameters and CVI parameters. However, postoperative changes in ChT and choroidal area parameters showed a negative correlation with AL and a positive correlation with SER. Our research demonstrated that ICL V4c implantation resulted in noteworthy alterations in retinal and choroidal morphology over a 1-year follow-up period. Moreover, in patients with high myopia, individuals with longer AL and higher degrees of myopia exhibited more pronounced postoperative changes in the choroid and retina. Further studies with extended follow-up durations are necessary to comprehensively understand the long-term effects of ICL implantation on retinal and choroidal morphology and function. To evaluate retinal thickness (RT), retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), and choroidal thickness (CT) changes in synthetic cannabinoid (SC) users. This prospective study evaluated the RT, RNFLT, and CT values of 56 SC users and 58 healthy controls. The individuals using SCs were referred to us by our hospital's forensic medicine department. Retinal and choroidal images were obtained using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). Measurements (one subfoveal, three temporals, three nasal) were taken at 500 μm intervals up to 1500 μm using the caliper system. Only the right eye was used for subsequent analysis. Mean ages were 27.7 ± 5.7 years in the SC-user group and 25.4 ± 6.7 in the control group. Subfoveal Global RNFLT was in the SCs group 102.3 ± 10.5 μm and 105.6 ± 20.2 μm in the control group (p = 0.271). Subfoveal CT was in the SC group mean of 316.1 ± 100.2 μm and in the control group mean 346.4 ± 81.8 μm (p = 0.065). RT, T500 (283.3 ± 36.7 μm, 296.6 ± 20.5 μm, p = 0.011) and N1500 (355.1 ± 14.3 μm, 349.3 ± 18.1 μm, p = 0.049) were significantly higher in the SC group than in the control group, respectively. Analysis of OCT findings of individuals who had been using SC for more than one year revealed no statistically significant difference between RNFLT and CT, although N1500 was significantly higher in RT. Introduction: The two most common types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Although these diseases mainly affect the intestinal system, they can also affect other systems, especially the vascular system. The objective of this study is to evaluate ocular microvascular and structural changes in IBD. Methods: A total of 42 patients with IBD (22 UC and 20 CD) followed in the gastroenterology clinic and 42 healthy controls matched for gender and age were enrolled in the study. All participants underwent optical coherence tomography angiography. Macular vessel density, central retinal, and choroidal thicknesses were measured. Results: No significant differences were observed between IBD patients and control subjects as regards superficial vascular plexus density, deep vascular plexus density, and choriocapillaris vascular density, retinal and choroidal thickness in the macular area (p >.05). Although not statistically significant, vascular density generally increased. On the other hand, retinal and choroidal thickness were decreased. Conclusion: It could be said that there is a reactive increase in retinal vascular density and a decrease in retinal and choroidal thickness as a result of atherosclerotic changes in IBD. Abstract Background Werner syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterised by premature aging. It is a typical hereditary progeroid syndrome that can be difficult to diagnose owing to its rarity and the similarity of some of its symptoms, such as juvenile cataracts, to other common ophthalmologic conditions. Early onset of bilateral cataracts is currently used as the ophthalmological feature for Werner syndrome; however, ophthalmologists often find performing a detailed examination of the medical history and genetic testing for Werner syndrome at the time of an ophthalmologic consultation challenging. If a unique ocular finding was observed on ocular examinations in cases of juvenile bilateral cataracts, we could consider Werner syndrome as a differential diagnosis. Case presentation We documented the cases of three patients with Werner syndrome in whom thinning of the retina in the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) were observed using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Visual field tests revealed the loss of visual field mainly owing to glaucoma. The thinnig of the choroidal thickness (CT) in three patients was also observed using enhanced depth imaging (EDI)-OCT. Conclusions Three patients have thinning of the RNFL, GCC, and choroidal thickness and the loss of visual field. These findings suggest the need for including Werner syndrome in the differential diagnosis when patients presenting with juvenile cataracts of unknown cause also show abnormal retinal and choroidal thinning in the OCT images.

This review provides an overview of conventional and novel retinal imaging modalities for hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) retinopathy. HCQ retinopathy is a form of toxic retinopathy resulting from HCQ use for a variety of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Each imaging modality detects a different aspect of HCQ retinopathy and shows a unique complement of structural changes. Conventionally, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), which shows loss or attenuation of the outer retina and/or retinal pigment epithelium–Bruch's membrane complex, and fundus autofluorescence (FAF), which shows parafoveal or pericentral abnormalities, are used to assess HCQ retinopathy. Additionally, several variations of OCT (retinal and choroidal thickness measurements, choroidal vascularity index, widefield OCT, en face imaging, minimum intensity analysis, and artificial intelligence techniques) and FAF techniques (quantitative FAF, near-infrared FAF, fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy, and widefield FAF) have been applied to assess HCQ retinopathy. Other novel retinal imaging techniques that are being studied for early detection of HCQ retinopathy include OCT angiography, multicolour imaging, adaptive optics, and retromode imaging, although further testing is required for validation. Abstract Background To investigate the effects of vitamin C on central retinal thickness and choroidal thickness. Methods A total of 69 patients diagnosed with vitamin C deficiency and 1:1 age- and gender-matched 69 healthy individuals with normal serum vitamin C were included in this study. Demographic characteristics of the individuals were collected. All patients underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination. Subfoveal choroidal thickness and retinal thickness were measured using a swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Results The average retinal thickness was 269.07 ± 13.51 μm in the vitamin C deficiency group and 276.92 ± 13.51 μm in the control group. Aim: Myopia is a common chronic eye disease, this study is to investigate the effects of exogenous retinoic acid (RA) on intraocular parameters, especially choroidal thickness (CT) and retinal thickness (RT), in guinea pigs with form deprivation myopia (FDM).Methods: A total of 80 male guinea pigs were divided randomly into 4 groups: Control, FDM, FDM + RA, and FDM + Citral groups. The FDM + RA group was given 24 mg/kg RA dissolved in 0.4 mL peanut oil; the FDM + Citral group was given citral 445 mg/kg dissolved in 0.4 mL peanut oil; The other two groups were given 0.4 mL peanut oil. After 4 weeks, the refractive error (RE), axial length (AL), and intraocular pressure (IOP) of all guinea pigs were measured, and the parameters of RT and CT were obtained using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT).Results: After 4 weeks, both the RE and AL in the FDM and FDM + RA groups were increased, and the RT and CT in both groups were smaller than those in the Control group (p < 0.05). Only the IOP of the right eye in the FDM + RA group increased significantly (p < 0.05). The RT of the right eye of the 4 groups was compared: Control group > FDM + Citral group > FDM group > FDM + RA group. Compared with the RT of the left eye and the right eye among the 4 groups, the RT of the right eye in the FDM and FDM + RA groups was significantly less than that in the left eye (p < 0.05). Moreover, the CT of the right eye in the Control group was greater than that in the other three groups (p < 0.0001). There was no significant difference in the CT among the FDM, FDM + RA, and FDM + Citral groups (p > 0.05). In contrast to the RT results, the CT results of the left and right eyes in the FDM + Citral group showed statistically significant differences (p < 0.05).Conclusion: RA participates in the progression of FDM as a regulatory factor. Exogenous RA can increase the RE, AL, and IOP of FDM guinea pigs, and might aggravate the retinal thinning of FDM guinea pigs. Citral can inhibit these changes, but RA might not affect the thickness of the choroid.

Purpose: To study the retinal and choroidal thickness variations on enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography scans in ocular albinism (OA) and compare with age-matched healthy subjects. Methods: This retrospective observational study had 48 eyes of 24 patients diagnosed clinically as OA and age, sex, and axial length-matched control healthy subjects. All patients underwent detailed ophthalmic examination and a single-line horizontal-raster enhanced depth imaging – optical coherence tomography scan (Spectralis, Heidelberg Engineering). Retinal and choroidal thickness was measured, compared, and analyzed between the two groups. Mann–Whitney U test was used for analysis between the two groups. P < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The mean age was 28.3 ± 11.6 and 29.9 ± 10.6 years in the OA group and control group, respectively. Spherical equivalents ranged from −8.5D to +10.5D in the OA group and from −8.0D to +10.0D in the control group. The mean axial length between the two groups (P = 0.652) were comparable. The average retinal thickness (272 ± 34.3 vs. 213 ± 13.8 μm; P < 0.001) was greater in the OA group as compared to controls. The mean choroidal thickness (184 ± 78.4 vs. 287 ± 46.4 μm; P < 0.001) was significantly thinner in the OA group. Conclusion: Acquisition of OCT scans in OA can be challenging. This study showed that the subfoveal retinal thickness and choroidal thickness measured across the scans were significantly different in the OA group compared to controls. In the future, more studies are required to evaluate the role of the choroid and its relationship to emmetropization in albinism.

Background: Werner syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterised by premature aging. It is a typical hereditary progeroid syndrome that can be difficult to diagnose owing to its rarity and the similarity of some of its symptoms, such as juvenile cataracts, to other common ophthalmologic conditions. Early onset of bilateral cataracts is currently used as the ophthalmological feature for Werner syndrome; however, ophthalmologists often find performing a detailed examination of the medical history and genetic testing for Werner syndrome at the time of an ophthalmologic consultation challenging. If a unique ocular finding was observed on ocular examinations in cases of juvenile bilateral cataracts, we could consider Werner syndrome as a differential diagnosis.  CASE PRESENTATION: We documented the cases of three patients with Werner syndrome in whom thinning of the retina in the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) were observed using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Visual field tests revealed the loss of visual field mainly owing to glaucoma. The thinnig of the choroidal thickness (CT) in three patients was also observed using enhanced depth imaging (EDI)-OCT.Conclusions: Three patients have thinning of the RNFL, GCC, and choroidal thickness and the loss of visual field. These findings suggest the need for including Werner syndrome in the differential diagnosis when patients presenting with juvenile cataracts of unknown cause also show abnormal retinal and choroidal thinning in the OCT images. Introduction: Cataract surgery is the most common ophthalmic surgical procedure worldwide. In addition, the retina and choroid are the tissues most susceptible to damage during cataract surgery. However, conflicting results have been found about the relationship between choroidal thickness (CT), retinal thickness (RT), and cataract surgery.Aim: To evaluate the changes in CT and foveal retinal thickness (FT) following cataract surgery in standardized conditions.Methods: Twenty eyes from 20 patients who experienced uneventful cataract surgery and twenty eyes from 20 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers were recruited in the study. Optical coherence tomography measurements were obtained for 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month postoperatively and compared with the preoperative and control values. The main outcome measure was through the mean change in CT and FT.Results: The FT values did not change throughout the follow-up. A statistically significant increase in CT at the macular (P = 0.003) and temporal 1 mm region (P = 0.04) was observed at 1 week following the surgery. However, it decreased to nearly preoperative values at 1 month postoperatively.Conclusion: Although the FT remains stable following uneventful phacoemulsification, the CT changes minimally in the early postoperative period. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate ocular blood flow and, retinal, choroidal and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in children with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) with patients who had at least five attacks. Methods: Fifty-six patients with FMF and 56 healthy subjects were enrolled in the study. Each participant's choroidal thickness (CT) and retinal thickness (RT) measurements were performed in the foveola and at horizontal nasal and temporal quadrants within 500-μm intervals up to 1.500 μm from the foveola using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography as well as the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT). Disc boundaries were determined manually by identifying seven points on the inner edge of the scleral ring. Following complete ophthalmological evaluation, peak systolic velocity (PSV), end-diastolic velocity (EDV), and resistivity index (RI) values in the central retinal artery (CRA), ophthalmic artery (OA), and nasal posterior ciliary artery (NPCA) were measured using color Doppler ultrasonography (CDU) in the left eyes of the patients diagnosed with FMF and the controls. The results were subsequently compared. Results: No statistically significant differences were observed between the groups in terms of all RNFLT quadrant and RT measurements. All CT measurements were thinner in patients with FMF than in the controls (For Central and Temporal_1500 p = 0.01; For Temporal_500, Nasal 500 and Nasal_1000 p < 0.001; Temporal_1000 p = 0.002) except than the Nasal_1500 point. For nasal_1500 p = 0.121). The PSV and EDV values in the OA, CRA, and NPCA were significantly lower in patients with FMF compared to healthy controls (p < 0.001 for all). In contrast, the RI values of all arteries were significantly higher than in the control group (Regarding OA, CRA and NPCA RI, p = 0.003, p = 0.039, and p = 0.039, respectively). Conclusions: The results of this study support the idea that chronic inflammation and frequent attacks in FMF may have an effect on decreased ocular blood flow and choroidal thinning. Background: To study choroidal thickness (CT) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) patients with moderate diabetic retinopathy (DR) and to correlate with changes in retinal thickness (RT) with swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) compared to healthy subjects. Methods: Fifty-four DM2 patients with moderate DR without diabetic macular edema (DME) and 73 age-matched healthy subjects were evaluated using SS-OCT to measure changes in total RT and CT in the nine areas of the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) macular grid. Results: The mean age was 64.06 ± 11.98 years and 60.79 ± 8.62 years in the diabetic and control groups, respectively. Total RT showed statistically significant differences in the temporal inner area, with higher values in the DM2 group (p = 0.010). CT did not show differences between the groups. There was a significant negative correlation between RT and age in all of the outer ETDRS areas and a positive significant correlation in the central area for the DM2 group. There was also a negative significant correlation between CT and age in all of the ETDRS areas except for the inferior inner area. In the DM2 group, a negative correlation was observed between RT and CT in the central area (p = 0.039) and in both horizontal parafoveal areas (temporal inner, p = 0.028; nasal inner, p= 0.003). Conclusion: DM2 patients with moderate DR have no changes with regard to CT. Aim: To evaluate retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, macular thickness and retinal vessel diameter by optical coherence tomography in patients with peripheral artery disease. Materials and Methods: 35 patients with a diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and 32 healthy individuals (control group) were included in the study. Retinal thickness (RT), choroidal thickness (CT) in enhanced depth imaging (EDI) mode, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, retinal artery and vein diameters were measured with optical coherence tomography (OCT) device. Results: The mean age of the PAH group included in the study was 59.4±11.9 and the mean age of the control group was 55.5±5.3 years. A statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups in the values obtained from the CT in the subfoveal region of the EDI measured from three different regions and the nasal quadrant of the RNFL measured from 7 quadrants (p=0.03 and p=0.03, respectively). On the contrary, no statistically significant difference was observed in EDI and other measurements of RNFL, RT values, artery and vein diameters (p values were between 0.08-1.00). Conclusion: In patients with PAD, it is important to determine the RNFL and CT to be thinner. It can be a guide in more comprehensive studies in the future.

Anemia is the most common hematological disorder noted in the people of the Indian subcontinent. Hemodynamic changes following anemia on the retina and choroid are not frequently studied. The aim of the study was to analyse the subfoveal retinal (CRT) and choroidal (SFCT) thickness changes in patients with anemia. In this retrospective, comparative study, patients who were diagnosed with primary anemia and had a fundus examination by a retinal specialist were included. Patients were divided into 3 groups: Group 1: Patients with anemic retinopathy; Group 2: Patients with anemia without retinopathy; Group 3: Normal healthy controls. One hundred and ninety-seven eyes of 197 subjects (group 1 – 38 eyes, group 2 – 90 eyes; group 3 – 69 eyes) met the inclusion criteria. Mean CRT was 269 ± 117µm, 258 ± 99.7µm and 201 ± 19.2µm and SFCT was 303 ± 68.4µm, 303 ± 50.1µm and 275 ± 38.9µm in groups 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Low haemoglobin corelated negatively with retinal (r = -0.362; p = <0.001) and choroidal (r = -0.294; p = <0.001) thickening and reduced visual acuity (r = -0.157; p = 0.03). Background: To investigate the effects of vitamin C on central retinal thickness and choroidal thickness.Methods: A total of 69 patients diagnosed with vitamin C deficiency and 1:1 age- and gender-matched 69 healthy individuals with normal serum vitamin C were included in this study. Demographic characteristics of the individuals were collected. All patients underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination. Subfoveal choroidal thickness and retinal thickness were measured using a swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT).Results: The average retinal thickness was 269.07 ± 13.51 μm in the vitamin C deficiency group and 276.92 ± 13.51 μm in the control group. The average choroidal thickness was 195.62 ± 66.40 μm in the in the vitamin C deficiency group and 238.86 ± 55.08 μm in the control group. There was a significant decrease in both average choroidal thickness and retinal thickness in vitamin C deficiency group compared with normal individuals (p < 0.001, and = 0.001 respectively).Conclusion: The central retinal and choroidal thickness were thinner in vitamin C deficiency group compared with normal individuals. Abstract Background Idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) is a common retinal disease in the elderly population. The exact pathogenesis of iERM is unknown. The present study aimed to evaluate the relationship between aqueous flare and morphology of iERM using swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods A consecutive series of 36 eyes of 33 patients with iERM and 109 control eyes of 109 patients were retrospectively examined. Aqueous flare measurements and OCT images were obtained on the same day. The average total retinal, inner retinal, outer retinal, and choroidal thicknesses were calculated using the thickness map mode with an Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study nine-zone grid that was divided into three zones. The maximum depth of the retinal folds in iERMs was manually measured. The correlation among flare value, maximum depth of folds, and retinal and choroidal thicknesses was evaluated. The morphological changes between the control eyes and the eyes with iERM in different stages were examined. Results The result demonstrated a significant positive correlation between the aqueous flare value and total and inner retinal thicknesses in the early stage of iERM. There was a significant positive correlation between the maximum depth of folds and total and inner retinal thicknesses in the early stage of iERM, and the maximum depth of folds significantly increased in the advanced stage. The total and inner retinal thicknesses and proportion of inner retinal thickness significantly increased as the stage of iERM progressed. Conclusions The aqueous flare value was associated with retinal thickness in the early stage of iERM, which supports the idea that inflammation or breakdown of blood–ocular barrier is involved in the process of iERM formation. The maximum retinal folds increased as the stage of iERM progressed and retinal thickness increased, which indicates that the tangential force increases as the iERM stage progresses.

BACKGROUND: Weightlessness can affect intraocular pressure and ocular structure changes. Methazolamide can reduce intraocular pressure, but its effect on intraocular pressure, retinal and choroid thickness in weightlessness is rarely reported. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the methazolamide on intraocular pressure and retinal and choroidal thickness in rats with simulated microgravity for 2 weeks. METHODS: Sixteen healthy Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups: control group (n=8) and drug group (n=8). A model of simulated microgravity environment was established in each rat by -30° tail suspension method. All the rats were not treated before tail suspension, and intragastrically given normal saline and methazolamide saline solution in the two groups respectively after tail suspension, once a day, for 14 continuous days. iCare tonometer was used to measure the changes of intraocular pressure in tail-suspended rats before tail suspension and 1, 3, 7, and 14 days after tail suspension. EDI SD-OCT was used to measure the changes of retinal and choroidal thickness in tail-suspended rats before tail suspension and 1, 3, 7, and 14 days after tail suspension. The study protocol was approved by the Animal Experiment Ethics Committee of the PLA Strategic Support Force Characteristic Medical Center. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Intraocular pressure in the control group increased after tail suspension, which was significantly higher at 14 days after tail suspension than the baseline (P < 0.05) as well as significantly higher at 7 days than 23 days after tail suspension (P < 0.05). In the drug group, there was no significant difference in the intraocular pressure before and after tail suspension (P > 0.05). Compared with the control group, the intraocular pressure was significantly reduced in the drug group (P < 0.05). Retinal thickness showed no significant changes in each group before and after tail suspension (P > 0.05), and there was also no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). In the control group, choroidal thickness was increased after tail suspension, and became thicker at 3 days than 1 day after tail suspension (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference at 7 and 14 days after tail suspension (P > 0.05). In the drug group, choroidal thickness was increased after tail suspension, which was significantly increased at 3, 7, 14 days compared with 1 day after tail suspension (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference at 3 days and 7, 14 days after tail suspension (P > 0.05). Compared with the control group, the choroidal thickness was significantly reduced in the drug group (P < 0.05). To conclude, 2-week simulated microgravity has a significant effect on the rat’s intraocular pressure. With the extension of tail suspension time, the intraocular pressure is increased and become significantly elevated at 14 days after tail suspension. The use of methazolamide can effectively inhibit the elevation of intraocular pressure. Moreover, 2-week simulated microgravity has no obvious effect on the retinal thickness, but has a significant effect on the choroidal thickness of rats. Background: To measure the retinal/choroidal thicknesses in the macular area of asymptomatic pediatric patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). Methods: This cross-sectional cohort study included 40 children (79 eyes) with SCD and 19 control patients (36 eyes). All subjects underwent spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) with enhanced-depth imaging OCT. Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) were applied to compare the outcomes between groups. P ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The choroidal thickness in the macular area in the study subfields was significantly thinner in the SCD eyes compared with control eyes (subfoveal subfield and temporal parafoveal subfield, p < 0.0001; nasal parafoveal subfield, p < 0.0001 temporal perifoveal subfield, p < 0.0001; and nasal perifoveal subfield, p < 0.0001). The variations in the retinal thickness were not significant. Conclusion: EDI-OCT showed that the macular choroidal thickness is thinner in asymptomatic pediatric patients with SCD. Background/Aim: Muscle trauma, vascular injury, and compensatory vasoconstriction during strabismus surgery may cause changes in the choroidal circulation in the early postoperative period. This study aims to evaluate the effect of extraocular muscle surgery on posterior ocular parameters, including central subfield thickness (CST), average retinal thickness (ART), choroidal thickness (CT), and macular volume (MV). Methods: This prospective cohort study included 26 eyes of 26 strabismic patients who underwent single medial or lateral rectus recession surgery using a fornix-based conjunctival incision. All participants underwent detailed ophthalmologic evaluation, including axial length (AL) and spherical equivalent (SE), uncorrected (UCVA), and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). Retinal and choroidal images were obtained using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). All measurements were performed preoperatively and repeated 1 week and 1 month after surgery. Results: All patients received satisfactory results in terms of deviation. None of the patients showed changes in AL, SE, UCVA, and BCVA. No significant differences were noted in CST and MV values (P=0.472 and P=0.182, respectively). Although subfoveal CT and ART showed statistically significant decreases 1 week after surgery (P=0.012 and P=0.046, respectively), no significant differences in these values were observed 1 month after surgery (P>0.05). No significant differences exist in the measurements between the preoperative, postoperative first week, and first month in nasal and temporal CT (P>0.05). Conclusion: Extraocular muscle surgery performed with the fornix-based conjunctival incision is a safe procedure for posterior ocular parameters, including CST, ART, CT, and MV. Abstract Background In diabetic eyes, various choroidal abnormalities are noted in addition to changes in the retinal circulation, and the risk of increased aqueous flare and retinal thickening after cataract surgery is higher in diabetic eyes. Inflammation caused by surgery induces breakdown of the blood-retinal barrier and affects the retina, although the influence on the choroid is unknown. Several researchers have evaluated the choroidal thickness (CT) after cataract surgery in patients with diabetes; however, the results are inconsistent. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of uneventful small-incision phacoemulsification cataract surgery on the subfoveal choroidal thickness (SCT), the central macular thickness (CMT), and aqueous flare in patients with diabetes. Methods This study included 59 randomly selected eyes (33 eyes of patients with diabetes and 26 eyes of control patients without diabetes) undergoing small-incision cataract surgery. Among the diabetic eyes, 26 were without diabetic retinopathy, and the remaining eyes had non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Aqueous flare, CMT, and SCT measurements were performed before and at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after surgery. Results The postoperative CMT continued to increase significantly until 3 months in both groups. Although the CMT was more in patients with diabetes than in patients without diabetes during the follow-up period, there was no significant difference between the two groups. The aqueous flare value increased until 3 months after surgery in both groups. Although the increase was significant at 3 months after surgery in patients with diabetes, the increase in controls was not significant. The aqueous flare values differed significantly between the two groups before and at 3 months after surgery. There was no significant within-group or between-group difference in pre- and postoperative SCT values. Conclusion In diabetic eyes with early stage of retinopathy, even small-incision cataract surgery can induce increased aqueous flare and macular thickening until 3 months, although there is no significant change in the choroidal thickness. Further studies are essential to evaluate choroidal changes after the cataract surgery in diabetic eyes.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation between choroidal thickness (CT), central retinal thickness (CRT) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) after surgery for idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM). Methods: Patients with 4 severity stages of iERM, who underwent vitrectomy with membrane- and internal limiting membrane peeling, were included in this prospective study. CRT, CT, and BCVA were assessed at baseline (BSL), 1 week, 1 and 3 months postoperatively. Results: Twenty-one eyes were phakic, 11 eyes pseudophakic at BSL, in 14 cases combined cataract surgery was performed. BCVA was highest in stage 1 and 2, lowest in stage 4 iERM (p < 0.001) and correlated with CRT. After surgery, CRT decreased and BCVA increased significantly (p < 0.05). CT did not show significant differences among stages (p = 0.23). BSL CRT did not differ between phakic and pseudophakic eyes, the least reduction after surgery was detected in patients who underwent combined cataract surgery and vitrectomy. BSL CT was greater in phakic than in pseudophakic eyes (p = 0.033). Postoperative CT decreased in pseudophakic and phakic eyes, but remained higher after combined surgery (p = 0.0048). Conclusion: CT is not related to the severity of iERM. Choroidal changes did not influence the BCVA. Additional cataract surgery seems to cause longer recovery in CT and CRT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AIM:To analyze the differences of retinal thickness, retinal volume and choroidal thickness in the macular area in healthy people and patients with liver cirrhosis, and to explore the morphologic changes of retina and choroid in liver cirrhosis.METHODS: A cross-sectional study. From January 2015 to March 2018, 168 eyes of 84 patients with liver cirrhosis and 100 eyes of 50 healthy people were included. Healthy people were the normal control group. The patients were divided into two groups, including compensated cirrhosis group(68 eyes of 34 patients)and decompensated cirrhosis group(100 eyes of 50 patients). All eyes underwent OCT examination to measure the retinal thickness and retinal volume in the macular area. EDI-OCT was used for choroidal thickness scanning, and the vertical distance between the strong reflection of Bruch film and the strong reflection of the choroidal sclera interface was defined as the choroidal thickness. The retinal thickness, retinal volume and choroidal thickness in the macular area in the three groups were compared and analyzed.RESULTS: The differences in retinal thickness and retinal volume between three groups were not significant(P>0.05). The subfoveal choridal thickness(SFCT)of three groups were 338.50±70.44, 357.00±89.16, 319.53±74.37μm(P>0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in nasal choroid thickness between the three groups(PPCONCLUSION: The choridal thickness in nasal area to fovea in the patients with decompensated cirrhosis is thicker than that in healthy people. There are no significant differences in retinal thickness or retinal volume in macular area between healthy people and patients with liver cirrhosis.

There was also a negative significant correlation between CT and age in all of the ETDRS areas except for the inferior inner area. In the DM2 group, a negative correlation was observed between RT and CT in the central area (p = 0.039) and in both horizontal parafoveal areas (temporal inner, p = 0.028; nasal inner, p= 0.003). Conclusion: DM2 patients with moderate DR have no changes with regard to CT. Both CT and RT decreased with age in DM2, showing a negative correlation between these factors in the central and horizontal parafoveal areas of the ETDRS grid.

Background: Idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) is a common retinal disease in the elderly population. The exact pathogenesis of iERM is unknown. The present study aimed to evaluate the relationship between aqueous flare and morphology of iERM using swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods: A consecutive series of 36 eyes of 33 patients with iERM and 109 control eyes of 109 patients were retrospectively examined. Aqueous flare measurements and OCT images were obtained on the same day. The average total retinal, inner retinal, outer retinal, and choroidal thicknesses were calculated using the thickness map mode with an Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study nine-zone grid that was divided into three zones. The maximum depth of the retinal folds in iERMs was manually measured. The correlation among flare value, maximum depth of folds, and retinal and choroidal thicknesses was evaluated. The morphological changes between the control eyes and the eyes with iERM in different stages were examined. Results: The result demonstrated a significant positive correlation between the aqueous flare value and total and inner retinal thicknesses in the early stage of iERM. There was a significant positive correlation between the maximum depth of folds and total and inner retinal thicknesses in the early stage of iERM, and the maximum depth of folds significantly increased in the advanced stage. The total and inner retinal thicknesses and proportion of inner retinal thickness significantly increased as the stage of iERM progressed. Conclusions: The aqueous flare value was associated with retinal thickness in the early stage of iERM, which supports the idea that inflammation or breakdown of blood–ocular barrier is involved in the process of iERM formation. The maximum retinal folds increased as the stage of iERM progressed and retinal thickness increased, which indicates that the tangential force increases as the iERM stage progresses. Background: Patients with chronic renal failure are commonly cared using a blood filtration mechanism like hemodialysis. Little information is available regarding ocular changes following hemodialysis for people with chronic renal failure. Accordingly, this study intended to estimate the pre- and post-hemodialysis thickness of retina and choroid and other ocular findings in patients with chronic renal failure. Methods: This research is a "before and after" clinical experiment, without control. This prospective study was conducted on patients with chronic renal failure who were in Imam Khomeini Hospital for hemodialysis in 2017. The sample size of this study was estimated to be 67 (134 eyes). In this study, after acquiring consent (by the associated assistant) from all patients, thorough ocular examinations including IOP control, VA and fundus examination, reflection, and macula and choroid OCT were performed 30 min before and after hemodialysis and entered in SPSS V. 16 software by the project manager. Finally, these data were analyzed practicing T-pair tests or their nonparametric equivalent, the Wilcoxon test. Results: Based on the results of this examination, studying 67 participating patients, 134 eyes were examined, of which 80 eyes (59.8%) belonged to men, and 54 eyes (40.2%) belonged to women. The mean and standard deviation of participants' age in the study was reported to be 57.3 ± 15 years, and the dialysis duration was 3.0 ± 2.11 h. According to the Wilcoxon test, the average rank in terms of weight, patient temperature, pulse, blood sugar, urea, potassium, ocular pressure, 500-micron nasal choroidal thickness, and myopia in diopter vary significantly before and after dialysis (p < 0.05). However, according to the Wilcoxon test, choroidal thickness in the subfoveal area of the eye (p = 0.600), the retinal thickness in the subfoveal area (p = 0.839), the amount of astigmatism in diopter (p = 0.757) and the amount of hypermetropia in diopter (p = 0.068) before and after dialysis do not have a significant difference. Based on the t test, it was reported that the average creatinine score, the best corrected vision, and the 500 and 1000-micron temporal and nasal choroidal thickness had a significant difference (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Based on the results of the current study, it was settled that the corrected vision, ocular pressure, as well as the 500-micron nasal choroidal thickness, and myopia in diopter and the 1000-micron temporal and nasal choroidal thickness of patients before and after hemodialysis vary. Purpose: To compare the retinal thickness at the fovea center, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and choroidal thickness (CT) in former preterm and full-term infants. Methods: A total of 121 healthy children aged 4–8 years were divided 4 groups: group 1; children born on time, group 2; preterm children without a history of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), group 3; preterm children with a history of spontaneously regressed ROP and group 4; preterm children who underwent diode laser photocoagulation for ROP. The retinal thickness at the fovea, peripapillary RNFL thickness at global, superior, inferior, nasal and temporal quadrants and submacular CT at 7 different points were measured by using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Results: The mean retinal thickness at the fovea center was statistically higher, whereas the mean RNFL thickness values in global, nasal, superior and inferior quadrants were statistically lower in group 4. No difference was found in the mean submacular CT value of any point between the groups. Abstract Background A study was conducted to evaluate the choroidal thickness (CT) and retinal thickness (RT) in paediatric patients with hypoalbuminaemia caused by nephrotic syndrome (NS). We also studied the correlation between the subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and serum protein concentration. Methods This was a cross-sectional study. Fifty-one paediatric patients with hypoalbuminaemia caused by NS and 41 normal subjects were included in the study. Enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) was performed to measure the RT and CT. The RT and CT were measured manually at intervals of 0.5 mm along a horizontal line through the macular fovea between 2.5 mm nasal and 2.5 mm temporal to the fovea. Clinical data including measurements of serum proteins were obtained. Results The mean RTs at the T2.5, T2, N1.5, N2, and N2.5 locations and the average macular horizontal RT were slightly greater in the NS group than those in the control group. Objectives:This study aimed to compare the thickness of the macula, choroid, and peripapillary retina nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in smokers with those of healthy, nonsmoking individuals using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).Materials and Methods:Sixty-eight healthy smokers with an average of 19.75 pack-years and 71 nonsmoker subjects (control group) were included in the study. Macular thickness, RNFL thickness, and choroidal thickness (CT) were measured by SD-OCT.Results:The mean age of the smokers was 42.76±6.97 years and that of the control group was 41.15±11.61 years (p=0.32). Inferonasal and temporal RNFL thicknesses were 121.60±27.40 μm and 69.75±9.82 μm in the smokers group and 109.05±21.71 μm and 75.95±15.01 μm in the nonsmoker group, respectively. The differences were statistically significant (p=0.003, p=0.005, respectively). Central macular thickness (CMT) was 222.97±18.95 μm and subfoveal CT was 369.52±105.36 μm in the smoker group, while these values were 222.98±17.72 μm and 347.42±104.63 μm in the nonsmoker group, respectively. There were no significant differences in these comparisons (p=0.99, p=0.49, respectively). A significant negative correlation was found between smoking exposure and nasal and temporal CT.Conclusion:The results of our study revealed that RNFL thickness was decreased but CMT and CT were not affected in healthy chronic smokers.

AIM: To observe and compare the changes of foveal retinal and choroidal thickness in patients with pregnancy-induced hypertension(PIH)by enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography(EDI-OCT). METHODS: Totally 150 patients(289 eyes)diagnosed with pregnancy-induced hypertension were identified by fundus examination and EDI-OCT after mydriasis. The patients were divided into four groups for the Duke-Elder class: P1(vasospasm), P2(angiosclerosis), P3(retinopathy), and control group P0(normal fundus). The average retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in each quadrant, foveal retinal and choroidal thickness were measured by EDI-OCT respectively. RESULTS: There were 36(72 eyes, 24.9%)of 150 women with pregnancy-induced hypertension had no retinal changes, and 114(217 eyes, 75.1%)of 150 cases identified by clinical examinations as having retinal findings. The retinal and choroidal thickness varied with different stages of fundus changes. The RNFL thickness of central subfield(CSF), the foveal retina and choroid were significantly higher in angiosclerosis stage than that in normal fundus group(PPCONCLUSION: EDI-OCT is one important tool for the study of fundus changes in PIH. Findings in the morphology changes of retina and choroid with the help of EDI-OCT may indicate more about retinal microcirculation changes caused by pregnancy-induced hypertension in depth.

To investigate the effect of oral isotretinoin use on refractive error, axial length, and anteroposterior segment parameters. In this prospective study, 50 eyes of 50 patients using isotretinoin with a diagnosis of acne vulgaris and 50 eyes of 50 healthy control subjects were included. After detailed biomicroscopy, measurements were taken of axial length, lens thickness, central corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth, central retinal thickness, and subfoveal choroidal thickness. The pupils of both eyes were dilated with one drop of cycloplegic drops after refraction measurement. Visual acuity examination was performed with a Snellen chart the next day. The same procedure was repeated at the end of the third and sixth month of drug treatment. Forty-seven patients with acne vulgaris and 45 healthy controls met the inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. The mean ages of the patients and the controls were 21.7 ± 2.5 years (range, 18–28 years) and 22.6 ± 2.7 years (range, 19–27 years), respectively. No significant changes were observed in any parameters in the third and sixth month in the control group (p > 0.05). The most important result was significant increases in myopia and axial length in the sixth month of isotretinoin use (p = 0.01, p = 0.04, respectively). There were no significant relationships between increases in myopia and axial length and patients' age, sex, drug dose, and initial refraction (p > 0.05). The changes in spherical equivalent and axial length differed significantly between the drug group and the control group (p = 0.001, p = 0.001, respectively). Isotretinoin is one of the important molecules in the aetiology of myopia. Oral isotretinoin treatment may increase myopia and axial length, although not to a clinically significant degree. There is paucity of data on ocular changes in acute Pancreatitis (AP). Moreover, subclinical alterations in retina & choroid have not been studied in AP. To prospectively study retino-choroidal changes in AP. Sixty patients (mean age 39.07 years; 41 males) with AP were followed up till recovery/death. Baseline slit-lamp examination, choroidal thickness (CT), retinal thickness (RT), choroidal vascularity index (CVI), retinal capillary density index (CDI) and arteriovenous ratio (AVR) were recorded. The patients were divided into two groups – mild (Group A; 5 patients) and moderately severe/severe (Group B; 55 patients) as per revised Atlanta classification. Fundus examination showed mild optic disc edema with retinal hemorrhages in 6 (10%) patients in group B as compared to none in group A (p = 1.00). None of the patients had Purtscher retinopathy. Mean CT (317 ± 56.29 μm) was increased as compared to normal subjects (278.90 ± 57.84 μm, p = 0.003). The mean CVI (0.62 ± 0.04) was decreased as compared to normal (0.66 ± 0.01, p < 0.0001) as was the mean AVR (0.67 ± 0.03 vs. 0.7 ± 0.02, p < 0.0001). However, the mean RT of subjects with AP (239.68 ± 33.76 μm) was not significantly different compared to the normal subjects 253.17 ± 33.67 µm (p=NS). The mean CDI of superficial and deep plexus were comparable between normal and patients with AP. CT, RT, CVI, AVR and CDI were comparable between group A and group B as well as survivors and non-survivors. Clinically significant ocular changes are seen infrequently in AP. Purpose: To investigate the effect of a single dose of topical timolol maleate 0.5% on anterior segment structure, pupil dynamics, and retinal and choroidal thickness in healthy subjects. Materials and Methods: Thirty subjects were included in this prospective and observational study. One eye of the participants received a single dose of topical benzalkonium chloride (BAC) preserved Timolol maleate 0.5% (Timosol 0.5%, Bilim Ilac, Istanbul, Turkey) (treated eye). Contralateral eye received a single dose of sodium hyaluronate ophthalmic solution without preservative (control eye). Main outcome measures were central corneal thickness (CCT), aqueous depth, anterior chamber volume, iridocorneal angle, horizontal anterior chamber diameter, static and dynamic pupil functions, central macular thickness, and choroidal thickness. Results: Mean CCT was significantly higher after timolol instillation in treated eyes (p=0.001). Timolol did not affect aqueous depth, anterior chamber volume, iridocorneal angle and horizontal anterior chamber diameter in treated eyes (p>0.05 for each). Mean pupil diameters were similar under scotopic, mesopic and photopic conditions before and after timolol instillation (p>0.05 for each); however, pupil dilation speed was significantly lower after timolol instillation in the treated eyes (p<0.05). Mean central macular thickness was significantly higher after timolol instillation in treated eyes (p=0.005); however, no significant difference was observed in choroidal thickness (p>0.05). Pre- and postinstillation outcomes were similar in control eyes for all parameters (p>0.05 for each). Conclusion: Topical BAC-preserved timolol maleate reduces pupil dilation speed without any effect on static pupil functions and increases the CCT and central macular thickness. Objective: To describe the neural-ophthalmological alterations associated with carotid stenosis. Acquisition of evidence: A bibliographic search was carried out in PubMed, Medline, Cumed, Lilacs, Academic Google and SciELO databases. Sixty-one articles published in English and Spanish were consulted, from 2015 to 2020, which dealt with the different neural-ophthalmological manifestations of carotid stenosis. The main search descriptors were neural-ophthalmological manifestations AND carotid stenosis, carotid stenosis AND epidemiology, ocular ischemic syndrome, amaurosis fugax AND carotid stenosis, optic nerve AND carotid stenosis, choroid AND carotid stenosis, retina AND carotid stenosis. Results: The manifestations of carotid insufficiency cover a spectrum that includes transient episodes of monocular blindness (amaurosis fugax), venous stasis retinopathy and ocular ischemic syndrome. The presence of asymmetric hypertensive retinopathy can be detected in the fundus, including small cholesterol emboli or vascular changes. Optical coherence tomography is useful in these cases to detect changes in microvascular density, retinal thickness, choroidal thickness, and nerve fiber layers. The electroretinogram can be a valuable tool for the detection of retinal ischemia in asymptomatic cases. Conclusions: In carotid stenosis, amaurosis fugax or ocular ischemic syndrome are frequent manifestations, but alterations of the retina, choroid or the optic nerve may be present in asymptomatic patients. Purpose: To compare optic disc, retinal and choroidal measurements in patients with Graves' disease with or without orbitopathy, and healthy controls. Methods: Optical coherence tomography and Heidelberg retinal tomography were performed in 40 patients with Graves' orbitopathy (GO), 40 subjects with Graves's disease (GD) with no sign of orbitopathy and 40 healthy controls. Degree of exophthalmos, ocular alignment, clinical activity score (CAS), choroidal thickness, retinal thickness, ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness, disc area, cup area, rim area, cup/disc area ratio, linear cup/disc ratio and mean peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer thickness were analysed. Results: GO patients and healthy controls significantly differ regarding mean central retinal thickness (275 ± 19 µm and 285 ± 20 µm, P = 0.017); mean central GCL thickness (14.87 ± 3.0 µm and 17.92 ± 5.02 µm, P = 0.001); mean disc area (2.00 ± 0.44 mm2 and 1.72 ± 0.37 mm2, P = 0.003); mean cup area (0.53 ± 0.52 mm2 and 0.31 ± 0.20 mm2, P = 0.003); cup/disc area ratio (0.22 ± 0.10 and 0.17 ± 0.08, P = 0.010); and linear cup/disc ratio (0.47 ± 0.15 and 0.40 ± 0.13, respectively, P = 0.011). No difference was found between patients without orbitopathy and healthy controls. No significant difference was found regarding the choroidal thickness between the three groups. There was no statistically significant relationship between retinal thickness, ganglion cell layer thickness, mean disc area, mean cup area, cup/disc area ratio, linear cup/disc ratio, CAS, exophthalmometric value and ocular alignment. Conclusion: GO patients showed significant changes in foveal and GCL thickness, and optic nerve head morphology suggesting a possible influence of the orbital inflammatory process. Purpose: To evaluate the clinical characteristics, including spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) findings, of pediatric-onset Behçet's disease (PBD) patients.Methods: Medical records of 23 PBD (15 males and 8 females) and 24 (15 males and 9 females) healthy subjects were evaluated retrospectively. The main outcomes were compared between PBD patients, with and without ocular involvement, and healthy subjects.Results: The mean age at onset was 12.00 ± 2.10 years. Mean follow-up period was 25.17 ± 15.36 months (range 6-48). Retinal vasculitis was the most common ocular finding (7 patients). Most of the complications of systemic treatment were associated with long term corticosteroid therapy. There was no significant difference between the mean retinal thickness of the PBD patients and healthy controls (p > 0.05). The mean choroidal thickness was significantly increased in all measured segments of PBD patients with ocular involvement (p < 0.01).Conclusion: Choroidal thickness of PBD patients with ocular involvement was significantly thicker compared to the PBD patients without ocular involvement and to healthy control subjects. Background: In diabetic eyes, various choroidal abnormalities are noted in addition to changes in the retinal circulation, and the risk of increased aqueous flare and retinal thickening after cataract surgery is higher in diabetic eyes. Inflammation caused by surgery induces breakdown of the blood-retinal barrier and affects the retina, although the influence on the choroid is unknown. Several researchers have evaluated the choroidal thickness (CT) after cataract surgery in patients with diabetes; however, the results are inconsistent. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of uneventful small-incision phacoemulsification cataract surgery on the subfoveal choroidal thickness (SCT), the central macular thickness (CMT), and aqueous flare in patients with diabetes.Methods: This study included 59 randomly selected eyes (33 eyes of patients with diabetes and 26 eyes of control patients without diabetes) undergoing small-incision cataract surgery. Among the diabetic eyes, 26 were without diabetic retinopathy, and the remaining eyes had non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Aqueous flare, CMT, and SCT measurements were performed before and at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after surgery.Results: The postoperative CMT continued to increase significantly until 3 months in both groups. Although the CMT was more in patients with diabetes than in patients without diabetes during the follow-up period, there was no significant difference between the two groups. The aqueous flare value increased until 3 months after surgery in both groups. Although the increase was significant at 3 months after surgery in patients with diabetes, the increase in controls was not significant. The aqueous flare values differed significantly between the two groups before and at 3 months after surgery. There was no significant within-group or between-group difference in pre- and postoperative SCT values.Conclusion: In diabetic eyes with early stage of retinopathy, even small-incision cataract surgery can induce increased aqueous flare and macular thickening until 3 months, although there is no significant change in the choroidal thickness. Increased survival rate of extremely preterm children is associated with a higher risk of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and long-term sequelae, which implicate retinal changes. To assess an influence of perinatal characteristics on morphology and retinal vascularity of the macula in preterm children. A cohort of 123 preterm children at the age of 10.5 years (IQR: 8.12-12.77) was prospectively assessed. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) was performed using RTVueXR Avanti. Foveal thickness, parafoveal thickness, size of foveal avascular zone (FAZ), superficial and deep vessel density, central choroidal thickness (CCT) were analyzed. The associations between OCTA results and perinatal factors, including the presence of ROP and therapy requirements were assessed in preterm children. Significantly smaller FAZ, higher foveal thickness and vessel density were noted in children with ROP, Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, required erythropoietin, transfusion or steroids. Foveal thickness was increased in children with ROP (p < 0.001) and following laser treatment (p < 0.05). Thinner CCT was noted in children with a history of sepsis (p < 0.05) and ROP required treatment (p < 0.05). Pregnancy bleeding was associated with higher superficial foveal vessel density (p < 0.05) and smaller FAZ (p < 0.05).
