This contribution provides an overview of platinum group elements (PGE) distribution and mineralogy in ophiolitic chromitites, which are unusually enriched in the low melting-point Rh, Pt and Pd (PPGE) compared with most chromite deposits associated with ophiolites, which are dominated by the refractory Os, Ir and Ru (IPGE). The PPGE-rich chromitites examined in this paper have a PPGE/IPGE ratio equal to or higher than 1 and represent about 7% of the ophiolitic chromitite population. These chromitites occur in the mantle unit, in the mantle-transition zone (MTZ), as well as in the supra-Moho cumulate sequence of ophiolite complexes. The age of their host ophiolites varies from Proterozoic to Eocene and, based on their composition, the chromitites can be classified into Cr-rich and Al-rich categories. Mineralogical assemblages observed in this investigation suggest that the PPGE enrichment was achieved in the magmatic stage thanks to the formation of an immiscible sulfide liquid segregating during or immediately after chromite precipitation. The sulfide liquid collected the available chalcophile PPGE that precipitated as specific phases together with Ni-Cu-Fe sulfides in the host chromitite and the silicate matrix. After their magmatic precipitation, the PPGM and associated sulfides were altered during low-temperature serpentinization and hydrothermal processes. Therefore, the original high-temperature assemblage underwent desulfurization, generating awaruite and alloys characterized by variable Pt-Pd-Rh-Cu-Ni-Fe assemblages. The occurrence of secondary PPGM containing Sb, As, Bi, Te, Sn, Hg, Pb and Au suggests that these elements might have been originally present in the differentiating magmatic sulfide liquid or, alternatively, they were introduced by an external source transported by hydrothermal and hydrous fluids during the low-temperature evolution of the host ophiolite. Although the PGE content may be as high as 81,867 ppb, as was found in one sample from Shetland chromite deposits, the ophiolitic chromitites are not presently considered as a potential resource because of the following circumstances: (1) enrichment of PPGE in podiform chromitites is a local event that occurs randomly in ophiolite sequences, (2) ore deposits are small and characterized by uneven distribution and high discontinuity, (3) physical characters of the mineralization only allow poor recovery of the precious metals mainly due to the minute grain size, and (4) for these reasons, the PPGE reserves in ophiolitic chromitites cannot compete, at the moment, with those in chromite deposits of the Bushveld type that will supply world demands for centuries using current mining techniques. The presence of PGM associated with the podiform chromitites in the Jurassic–Cretaceous ophiolite of Sebuku Island (South Kalimantan, Indonesia) is reported for the first time. Two types of chromitite have been recognized; one with high-Cr composition (Cr/(Cr + Al) > 0.7) occurs in the deep mantle, the other, high-Al (Cr/(Cr + Al) < 0.6), is located close to the Moho transition zone. The TiO2-Al2O3 relations indicate affinity to IAT and MORB, for the high-Cr and high-Al chromitites, respectively. However, both are believed to have formed by mantle/melt reaction and differentiation of a magma characterized by an initial IAT composition related to an SSZ. Primary magmatic inclusions (<10 μm) of laurite characterized by Ru/Os chondritic ratio are the only PGM found in the high-Cr chromitites, indicating crystallization from undifferentiated magma, at low fS2 in the mantle. In contrast, the high-Al to chondrite, suggesting the increase of fS2 in the evolved melt. Besides laurite, the high-Al chromitite contains a complex assemblage of secondary PGM (Pt-Fe, garutiite, iridium, ruthenium–magnetite aggregates, zaccariniite and unnamed Ru and Mn oxides). These secondary PGM have an irregular shape and occur exclusively in the chlorite matrix sometimes associated with Mn-Ni-Fe-Cr hydroxides. They are interpreted to have formed by desulfuration of primary interstitial PGM sulfides or to have precipitated from secondary fluids during low T alteration. This contribution presents the first systematic mineralogical study of chromite composition, silicates and PGM (platinum group minerals) by electron microprobes in the podiform chromitite of Kabaena Island (Indonesia) mined in the past. The main target of this study is to understand the petrogenetic nature of the parental melt from which the chromitites of Kabaena Island precipitated and, indirectly, define the geodynamic tectonic setting of their emplacement. The evolution of PGM, from the magmatic stage to low-temperature processes, is also discussed. The variation of the Cr# = Cr/(Cr + Al), being comprised between 0.65 and 0.75, is similar to the podiform-type chromitite and indicates the absence of Al-rich chromitite. The calculated composition of the parental melt varies from arc to MORB (mid-ocean ridge basalts). Several grains of olivine and clinopyroxene have been found in the silicate matrix or included in fresh chromite. Olivine shows a composition typical of a hosted mantle, and clinopyroxene is similar to those analyzed in the forearc of an SSZ (supra-subduction zone). Small PGM, varying in size from 1 to 10 μm, occur in the chromitites. The most abundant PGM is laurite, which has been found included in fresh chromite or in contact with ferrian chromite along the cracks in the chromite. Laurite forms polygonal crystals, and it occurs as a single phase or in association with clinopyroxene and amphibole. Tiny blebs of Ir-Os alloy (less than 2 μm across) have been found associated with grains of awaruite in the serpentine gangue of the chromitites. The composition of the investigated chromitites suggests that they formed in the mantle of a forearc ophiolite. All the discovered grains of laurite are considered to be magmatic in origin, i.e., entrapped as solid phases during the crystallization of chromite at temperatures above 1000 °C and a sulfur fugacity below sulfur saturation. Arsenotučekite, Ni18Sb3AsS16, is a new mineral discovered in the abandoned chromium mine of Tsangli, located in the eastern portion of the Othrys ophiolite complex, central Greece. Tsangli is one of the largest chromite deposit at which chromite was mined since 1870. The Tsangli chromitite occurs as lenticular and irregular bodies. The studied chromitites are hosted in a strongly serpentinized mantle peridotite. Arsenotučekite forms anhedral to subhedral grains that vary in size between 5 μm up to 100 μm, and occurs as single phase grains or is associated with pentlandite, breithauptite, gersdorffite and chlorite. It is brittle and has a metallic luster. In plane-polarized light, it is creamy-yellow, the bireflectance is barely perceptible and the pleochroism is weak. In crossed polarized reflected light, the anisotropic rotation tints vary from pale blue to brown. Internal reflections were not observed. Reflectance values of arsenotučekite in air (Ro, Re′ in %) are: 41.8–46.4 at 470 nm, 47.2–50.6 at 546 nm, 49.4–52.3 at 589 nm, and 51.3–53.2 at 650 nm. The empirical formula of arsenotučekite, based on 38 atoms per formula unit, and according to the structural results, is (Ni16.19Co1.01Fe0.83)Σ18.03Sb3(As0.67Sb0.32)Σ0.99S15.98. The mass density is 6.477 g·cm−3. The simplified chemical formula is (Ni,Co,Fe)18Sb3(As,Sb)S16. The mineral is tetragonal and belongs to space group I4/mmm, with a = 9.7856(3) Å, c = 10.7582(6) Å, V = 1030.2(6) Å3 and Z = 2. The structure is layered (stacking along the c-axis) and is dominated by three different Ni-coordination polyhedral, one octahedral and two cubic. The arsenotučekite structure can be considered as a superstructure of tučekite resulting from the ordering of Sb and As. The name of the new mineral species indicates the As-dominant of tučekite. Arsenotučekite occurs as rims partly replacing pentlandite and irregularly developed grains. Furthermore, it is locally associated with chlorite. These observations suggest that it was likely precipitated at relatively low temperatures during: 1) the late hydrothermal stages of the ore-forming process by reaction of Sb- and As-bearing solutions with magmatic sulfides such as pentlandite, or 2) during the serpentinization of the host peridotite. This paper reviews a database of about 1500 published and 1000 unpublished microprobe analyses of platinum-group minerals (PGM) from chromite deposits associated with ophiolites and Alaskan-type complexes of the Urals. Composition, texture, and paragenesis of unaltered PGM enclosed in fresh chromitite of the ophiolites indicate that the PGM formed by a sequence of crystallization events before, during, and probably after primary chromite precipitation. The most important controlling factors are sulfur fugacity and temperature. Laurite and Os-Ir-Ru alloys are pristine liquidus phases crystallized at high temperature and low sulfur fugacity: they were trapped in the chromite as solid particles. Oxygen thermobarometry supports that several chromitites underwent compositional equilibration down to 700 °C involving increase of the Fe3/Fe2 ratio. These chromitites contain a great number of PGM including--besides laurite and alloys--erlichmanite, Ir-Ni-sulfides, and Ir-Ru sulfarsenides formed by increasing sulfur fugacity. Correlation with chromite composition suggests that the latest stage of PGM crystallization might have occurred in the subsolidus. If platinum-group elements (PGE) were still present in solid chromite as dispersed atomic clusters, they could easily convert into discrete PGM inclusions splitting off the chromite during its re-crystallization under slow cooling-rate. The presence of primary PGM inclusions in fresh chromitite of the Alaskan-type complexes is restricted to ore bodies crystallized in equilibrium with the host dunite. The predominance of Pt-Fe alloys over sulfides is a strong indication for low sulfur fugacity, thereby early crystallization of laurite is observed only in one deposit. In most cases, Pt-Fe alloys crystallized and were trapped in chromite between 1300 and 1050 °C. On-cooling equilibration to ~900 °C may produce lamellar unmixing of different Pt-Fe phases and osmium. Precipitation of the Pt-Fe alloys locally is followed by an increase of sulfur fugacity leading to crystallize erlichmanite and Ir-Rh-Ni-Cu sulfides, occurring as epitaxic overgrowth on the alloy. There is evidence that the system moved quickly into the stabilization field of Pt-Fe alloys by an increase of the oxygen fugacity marked by an increase of the magnetite component in the chromite. In summary, the data support that most of the primary PGM inclusions in the chromitites of the Urals formed in situ, as part of the chromite precipitation event. However, in certain ophiolitic chromitites undergoing annealing conditions, there is evidence for subsolidus crystallization of discrete PGM from PGE atomic-clusters occurring in the chromite. An electron microprobe study has been carried out on platinum-group minerals, accessory phases, and chromite in several chromite deposits of the Alapaevsk ophiolite (Central Urals, Russia) namely the Bakanov Kluch, Kurmanovskoe, Lesnoe, 3-d Podyony Rudnik, Bol'shaya Kruglyshka, and Krest deposits. These deposits occur in partially to totally serpentinized peridotites. The microprobe data shows that the chromite composition varies from Cr-rich to Al-rich. Tiny platinum-group minerals (PGM), 1-10 μm in size, have been found in the chromitites. The most abundant PGM is laurite, accompanied by minor cuproiridsite and alloys in the system Os-Ir-Ru. A small grain (about 20 μm) was found in the interstitial serpentine of the Bakanov Kluch chromitite, and its calculated stoichiometry corresponds to (Ni,Fe)5P. Olivine, occurring in the silicate matrix or included in fresh chromite, has a mantle-compatible composition in terms of major and minor elements. Several inclusions of amphibole, Na-rich phlogopite, and clinopyroxene have been identified. The bimodal Cr-Al composition of chromite probably corresponds to a vertical distribution in the ophiolite sequence, implying formation of Cr-rich chromitites in the deep mantle, and Al-rich chromitites close to the Moho-transition zone, in a supra-subduction setting. The presence of abundant hydrous silicate inclusions, such as amphibole and phlogopite, suggests that the Alapaevsk chromitites crystallized as a result of the interaction between a melt enriched in fluids and peridotites. Laurite and cuproiridsite are considered to be magmatic in origin, i.e., entrapped as solid phases during the crystallization of chromite at high temperatures. The sulfur fugacity was relatively high to allow the precipitation of Ir-bearing sulfides, but below the Os-OsS2 buffer. The alloys in the system Os-Ir-Ru are classified as secondary PGM, i.e., formed at low temperature during the serpentinization process. The (Ni,Fe)5P phase is the first occurrence of a Ni-phosphide in terrestrial samples. Its composition indicates that it may be a new mineral. Abstract The Cedrolina chromitite body (Goiás-Brazil) is concordantly emplaced within talc-chlorite schists that correspond to the poly-metamorphic product of ultramafic rocks inserted in the Pilar de Goiás Greenstone Belt (Central Brazil). The chromite ore displays a nodular structure consisting of rounded and ellipsoidal orbs (up to 1.5 cm in size), often strongly deformed and fractured, immersed in a matrix of silicates (mainly chlorite and talc). Chromite is characterized by high Cr# (0.80–0.86), high Fe2+# (0.70–0.94), and low TiO2 (av. = 0.18 wt %) consistent with variation trends of spinels from metamorphic rocks. The chromitite contains a large suite of accessory phases, but only irarsite and laurite are believed to be relicts of the original igneous assemblage, whereas most accessory minerals are thought to be related to hydrothermal fluids that emanated from a nearby felsic intrusion, metamorphism and weathering. Rutile is one of the most abundant accessory minerals described, showing an unusually high Cr2O3 content (up to 39,200 ppm of Cr) and commonly forming large anhedral grains (>100 µm) that fill fractures (within chromite nodules and in the matrix) or contain micro-inclusions of chromite. Using a trace element geothermometer, the rutile crystallization temperature is estimated at 550–600 °C (at 0.4–0.6 GPa), which is in agreement with P and T conditions proposed for the regional greenschist to low amphibolite facies metamorphic peak of the area. Textural, morphological, and compositional evidence confirm that rutile did not crystallize at high temperatures simultaneously with the host chromitite, but as a secondary metamorphic mineral. Rutile may have been formed as a metamorphic overgrowth product following deformation and regional metamorphic events, filling fractures and incorporating chromite fragments. High Cr contents in rutile very likely are due to Cr remobilization from Cr-spinel during metamorphism and suggest that Ti was remobilized to form rutile. This would imply that the magmatic composition of chromite had originally higher Ti content, pointing to a stratiform origin. Another possible interpretation is that the Ti-enrichment was caused by external metasomatic fluids which lead to crystallization of rutile. If this was the case, the Cedrolina chromitites could be classified as podiform, possibly representing a sliver of tectonically dismembered Paleoproterozoic upper mantle. However, the strong metamorphic overprint that affected the studied chromitites makes it extremely difficult to establish which of the above processes were active, if not both (and to what extent), and, therefore, the chromitite’s original geodynamic setting. Several chromite deposits located in the in the South and Southeast Arms of Sulawesi, Indonesia, have been investigated by electron microprobe. According to the variation of the Cr# = Cr/(Cr + Fe3+), the chromite composition varies from Cr-rich to Al-rich. Small platinum-group minerals (PGM), 1-10 µm in size, occur in the chromitites. The most abundant PGM is laurite, which has been found included in fresh chromite or in contact with chlorite along cracks in the chromite. Laurite forms polygonal crystals, and it occurs as a single phase or in association with amphibole, chlorite, Co-pentlandite and apatite. Small blebs of irarsite (less than 2 %#181;m across) have been found associated with grains of awaruite and Co-pentlandite in the chlorite gangue of the chromitites. Grains of olivine, occurring in the silicate matrix or included in fresh chromite, have been analyzed. They show a composition typical of mantle-hosted olivine. The bimodal composition and the slight enrichment in TiO2 observed in some chromitites suggest a vertical zonation due to the fractionation of a single batch magma with an initial boninitic composition during its ascent, in a supra-subduction zone. This observation implies the accumulation of Cr-rich chromitites at deep mantle levels and the formation of the Al-rich chromitites close or above the Moho-transition zone. All of the laurites are considered to be magmatic in origin, i.e., entrapped as solid phases during the crystallization of chromite at temperature of around 1200 °C and a sulfur fugacity below the sulfur saturation. A variety of platinum-group-minerals (PGM) have been found to occur associated with the chromitite and dunite layers in the Niquelândia igneous complex. Two genetically distinct populations of PGM have been identified corresponding to phases crystallized at high temperatures (primary), and others formed or modified during post-magmatic serpentinization and lateritic weathering (secondary). Primary PGM have been found in moderately serpentinized chromitite and dunite, usually included in fresh chromite grains or partially oxidized interstitial sulfides. Due to topographically controlled lateritic weathering, the silicate rocks are totally transformed to a smectite-kaolinite-garnierite-amorphous silica assemblage, while the chromite is changed into a massive aggregate of a spinel phase having low-Mg and a low Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio, intimately associated with Ti-minerals, amorphous Fe-hydroxides, goethite, hematite and magnetite. The PGM in part survive alteration, and in part are corroded as a result of deep chemical weathering. Laurite is altered to Ru-oxides or re-crystallizes together with secondary Mg-ilmenite. Other PGM, especially the Pt-Fe alloys, re-precipitate within the altered chromite together with kaolinite and Fe-hydroxides. The Pindos ophiolite complex, located in the northwestern part of continental Greece, hosts various chromite deposits of both metallurgical (high-Cr) and refractory (high-Al) type. The Pefki chromitites are banded and sub-concordant to the surrounding serpentinized dunites. The Cr# [Cr/(Cr + Al)] of magnesiochromite varies between 0.75 and 0.79. The total PGE grade ranges from 105.9 up to 300.0 ppb. IPGE are higher than PPGE, typical of mantle hosted ophiolitic chromitites. The PGM assemblage in chromitites comprises anduoite, ruarsite, laurite, irarsite, sperrylite, hollingworthite, Os-Ru-Ir alloys including osmium and rutheniridosmine, Ru-bearing oxides, braggite, paolovite, platarsite, cooperite, vysotskite, and palladodymite. Iridarsenite and omeiite were also observed as exsolutions in other PGM. Rare electrum and native Ag are recovered in concentrates. This PGM assemblage is of great petrogenetic importance because it is significantly different from that commonly observed in podiform mantle-hosted and banded crustal-hosted ophiolitic chromitites. PGE chalcogenides of As and S are primary, and possibly crystallized directly from a progressively enriched in As boninitic melt before or during magnesiochromite precipitation. The presence of Ru-bearing oxides implies simultaneous desulfurization and dearsenication processes. Chemically zoned laurite and composite paolovite-electrum intergrowths are indicative of the relatively high mobility of certain PGE at low temperatures under locally oxidizing conditions. The PGM assemblage and chemistry, in conjunction with geological and petrologic data of the studied chromitites, indicate that it is characteristic of chromitites found within or close to the petrologic Moho. Ultramafic rocks around the city of Muğla in SW Turkey are represented by mantle peridotites depleted to various degrees, ranging from cpx-rich harzburgites to depleted harzburgite and dunite. Cpx-rich harzburgites are thought to be the residua left after extraction of MORB-type basalt, from which high-Al chromitite [49.2 < Cr# = 100 × Cr/(Cr + Al) < 53.5] crystallised with a higher proportion of 187Os/188Os (average of 0.1361). However, depleted harzburgites are assumed to be the residua left after extraction of hydrous boninitic melt produced by second stage partial melting of already depleted mantle due to a subducting slab, from which high-Cr chromitites (64.2 < Cr# < 85.9) with lower and heterogeneous 187Os/188Os ratio (average of 0.1324) were crystallised as a result of melt–rock interaction in a supra-subduction environment. Dunites around the chromite deposits are considered to be the product of melt–peridotite interaction. Most of the chromitites contain high-Cr chromite and display enrichment in IPGE (Os, Ir, Ru) over PPGE (Rh, Pt, Pd), with PGE concentrations between 61 and 1,305 ppb. Consistently, laurite-erlichmanite series minerals with various Os concentrations are found to be the most abundant PGM inclusions in chromite. Os–Ir–Ru alloy, irarsite, and kashinite, as well as Pt–Fe alloy and Pt-oxide, which are not common in ophiolitic chromitites, were also detected as magmatic PGM inclusions. Pentlandite, millerite, and, rarely heazlewoodite form the magmatic inclusions of base-metal sulphide. The presence of olivine and clinopyroxene, as well as hydrous silicate inclusions such as amphibole and phlogopite, in high-Cr chromitite supports the idea that high-Cr chromitites were formed in a supra-subduction environment. The mantle tectonite of the Kraka ophiolite contains several chromite deposits. Two of them consisting of high-Cr podiform chromitite—the Bolshoi Bashart located within harzburgite of the upper mantle transition zone and Prospect 33 located in the deep lherzolitic mantle—have been investigated. Both deposits are enveloped in dunite, and were formed by reaction between the mantle protolith and high-Mg, anhydrous magma, enriched in Al2O3, TiO2, and Na2O compared with boninite. The PGE mineralization is very poor (<100 ppb) in both deposits. Laurite (RuS2) is the most common PGM inclusion in chromite, although it is accompanied by erlichmanite (OsS2) and (Ir,Ni) sulfides in Prospect 33. Precipitation of PGM occurred at sulfur fugacity and temperatures of logƒS2 = (−3.0), 1300–1100 °C in Bolshoi Bashart, and logƒS2 = (−3.0/+1.0), 1100–800 °C in Prospect 33, respectively. The paucity of chromite-PGM mineralization compared with giant chromite deposits in the mantle tectonite in supra-subduction zones (SSZ) of the Urals (Ray-Iz, Kempirsai) is ascribed to the peculiar petrologic nature (low depleted lherzolite) and geodynamic setting (rifted continental margin?) of the Kraka ophiolite, which did not enable drainage of the upper mantle with a large volume of mafic magma. Trace element distribution and Zr-in-rutile temperature have been investigated in accessory rutile from stratiform (UG2, Merensky Reef, Jacurici), podiform (Loma Peguera), and metamorphic chromitites in cratonic shields (Cedrolina, Nuasahi). Rutile from chromitite has typical finger-print of Cr-V-Nb-W-Zr, whose relative abundance distinguishes magmatic from metamorphic chromitite. In magmatic deposits, rutile precipitates as an intercumulus phase, or forms by exsolution from chromite, between 870 °C and 540 °C. The Cr-V in rutile reflects the composition of chromite, both Nb and Zr are moderately enriched, and W is depleted, except for in Jacurici, where moderate W excess was a result of crustal contamination of the mafic magma. In metamorphic deposits, rutile forms by removal of Ti-Cr-V from chromite during metamorphism between 650 °C and 400 °C, consistent with greenschist-amphibolite facies, and displays variable Cr-Nb, low V-Zr, and anomalous enrichment in W caused by reaction with felsic fluids emanating from granitoid intrusions. All deposits, except Cedrolina, contain Rutile+PGM composite grains (<10 µm) locked in chromite, possibly representing relics of orthomagmatic assemblages. The high Cr-V content and the distinctive W-Nb-Zr signature that typifies accessory rutile in chromitite provide a new pathfinder to trace the provenance of detrital rutile in placer deposits. No genetic link between the two main types of chromitite, stratiform and podiform chromitites, has ever been discussed. These two types of chromitite have very different geological contexts; the stratiform one is a member of layered intrusions, representing fossil magma chambers, in the crust, and the podiform one forms pod-like bodies, representing fossil magma conduits, in the upper mantle. Chromite grains contain peculiar polymineralic inclusions derived from Na-bearing hydrous melts, whose features are so similar between the two types that they may form in a similar fashion. The origin of the chromite-hosted inclusions in chromitites has been controversial but left unclear. The chromite-hosted inclusions also characterize the products of the peridotite–melt reaction or melt-assisted partial melting, such as dunites, troctolites and even mantle harzburgites. I propose a common origin for the inclusion-bearing chromites, i.e., a reaction between the mantle peridotite and magma. Some of the chromite grains in the stratiform chromitite originally formed in the mantle through the peridotite–magma reaction, possibly as loose-packed young podiform chromitites, and were subsequently disintegrated and transported to a crustal magma chamber as suspended grains. It is noted, however, that the podiform chromitites left in the mantle beneath the layered intrusions are different from most of the podiform chromitites now exposed in the ophiolites. Podiform chromitites of the Vavdos ophiolite are associated with dunite bodies hosted within residual mantle harzburgite. The mantle source is highly depleted and apparently developed at fore-arc settings as inferred from the presence of boninitic melts. The ascendance of these melts through dunite pathways and their subsequent interaction with the depleted harzburgite instigated chromitite mineralization within dunite. Spinel occurs in a) massive accumulations (Mg# = 0.56–0.68 and Cr# = 0.69–0.77), b) in non-massive disseminated textures (Mg# = 0.52–0.61 and Cr# = 0.80–0.81) and c) in schlieren chromitite deposits within dunite bodies (Mg# = 0.43–0.48 and Cr# = 0.79–0.82). Olivine is the main silicate inclusion in chromitites, whereas the absence of hydrous mineral phases is linked with crystallization at relatively deeper parts of the mantle. Olivine inclusions in spinel are enriched in Fo, Ni and Ca compared to the interstitial olivine grains. No compositional gaps were noted between the mineral analyses of chromitites and dunites; the calculated parental melts are also homogeneous, reinforcing the view for production of melt batches by similar processes. Platinum-group elements (PGE) concentrations and platinum-group minerals (PGM) demonstrate high (Os + Ir + Ru)/ (Rh + Pt + Pd) ratios, typical of many Tethyan ophiolitic chromitites. The main PGM phase is laurite that forms an extended solid solution series with substitution of Ru for Os + Ir, linked to the cooling of the system. Massive chromitites contain Ru-rich laurite and Os-Ir alloys whereas non-massive ores contain Ru-poor laurite. The PGM were included in fresh magnesiochromite favoring their magmatic origin and initial entrapment at ~ 1200 °C and low sulfur fugacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
