Abstract: The article presents a study which aims to assess the dramatic increase in the diagnosis and pharmaceutical management of common chronic illnesses using qualitative data collected in Michigan primary care clinics. The study focuses on management of type 2 diabetes and hypertension in the said clinics where it was found out that medication selection is the focus of the consultations. The authors provide recommendations on the limit of the pharmaceutical industry's influence on clinical practice.
