Des de principis dels anys seixanta, els materials coneguts com a vidres metàl·lics han estat objecte d’un gran número d’investigacions centrades principalment en la comprensió de la seva estructura i de les propietats tèrmiques, magnètiques i mecàniques. Tal com el seu nom indica, sent vidres no presenten ordenament atòmic a llarg abast donant lloc a la seva estructura amorfa. Aquesta falta d’ordre els confereix propietats i comportaments considerablement diferents respecte als aliatges cristal·lins. En el camp de les propietats mecàniques, els vidres metàl·lics es caracteritzen per posseir un alt límit elàstic que, juntament amb la possibilitat d’obtenir-los en forma màssica, ha obert un nou camp d’interès en la utilització d’aquests com a materials estructurals. No obstant, la deformació plàstica a temperatura ambient succeeix de forma molt localitzada mitjançant la formació de bandes de cisalla. Com a conseqüència, els vidres metàl·lics, enlloc d’experimentar enduriment per deformació típica dels materials cristal·lins, s’ablaneixen impedint una deformació plàstica estable. Com a resultat, malgrat el seu alt límit de fluència, els vidres metàl·lics tendeixen a fracturar-se després d’una deformació macroscòpica limitada, restringint d’aquesta manera la seva utilització en molts camps d’aplicació. Així doncs, en els darrers temps, la millora de la plasticitat d’aquest tipus de materials s’ha convertit en l’objecte de molts treballs d’investigació. Apart d’alguns casos puntuals on s’han trobat vidres metàl·lics amb plasticitat intrínseca, el concepte més explorat per tal d’evitar tal ruptura catastròfica ha estat la precipitació d’una segona fase. Vàries rutes han estat provades per obtenir aliatges amb matriu amorfa amb més ductilitat: afegir directament una fase reforçant al material fos, dissenyar una composició adequada que resulti en un material compost al solidificar-lo o precipitar la segona fase durant un tractament tèrmic o de deformació. Seguint una d’aquestes rutes, un aliatge heterogeni format, ja sigui per una fase cristal·lina micro- o nano-mètrica, una fase quasicristal·lina o fins i tot una segona fase amorfa integrada dins una matriu amorfa ha estat fabricat. L’estudi desenvolupat al llarg d’aquesta Tesi es centra bàsicament en la millora de les propietats mecàniques dels vidres metàl·lics, donant especial èmfasi a la millora de la plasticitat, mitjançant algunes de les tècniques esmentades anteriorment. Principalment, s’han estudiat els canvis estructurals induïts per deformació, tractament tèrmic i afegint un nou element en diferents famílies de vidres metàl·lics i l’efecte de tals en les propietats mecàniques resultants. Els canvis estructurals han estat caracteritzats per tècniques de calorimetria, difracció de raig-X i per microscòpia electrònica. Tot seguit, la influència d’aquests en el comportament mecànic dels vidres s’ha portat a terme mitjançant principalment tests de compressió i nanoindentació. Els canvis mecànics i estructurals ocasionats per tractaments tèrmics en dues famílies de vidres metàl·lics (basats en Ti i en Fe) han estat estudiats. D’aquesta secció podríem concloure que bé si s’ha observat una bona millora en les propietats mecàniques (mòdul de Young, duresa, resistència al desgast,etc) quan el tractament tèrmic s’ha dut a terme al voltant de la temperatura de transició vítria (microstructura formada per nanocristalls dispersos en una matriu amorfa) la plasticitat continua sent limitada. Tot seguit, hem estudiat els canvis ocasionats per l’addició d’un element, Nb, en una composició inicialment amorfa. Hem pogut observar, com a mesura que introduïm Nb a l’aliatge format per Ti, Zr, Cu i Pd la capacitat de formació vítria va disminuint fins que per un percentatge de Nb del 4 % atòmic ens trobem amb un aliatge pràcticament cristal·lí. No obstant, en les composicions amb el 2% i el 3% de Nb, on s’observa una microstructura formada per petits cristalls integrats en una matriu amorfa, s’ha observat un increment notable (al voltant del 10%) en la plasticitat de l’aliatge. Aquesta Tesi també engloba un estudi detallat de la resposta de materials inicialment amorfs al ser sotmesos a diferents nivells de deformació plàstica. Tot i ser sotmesos a les mateixes condicions de deformació, en l’aliatge basat en titani es detecta ablaniment, mentre que en l’aliatge format principalment per zirconi s’observa enduriment. Els possibles efectes d’aquest comportament dissimilar són explicats en termes de volum lliure, cristal·lització i canvis en l’ordre a curt abast., Metallic glasses have been the subject of widespread research since the 1960's with significant progress in the understanding of their behaviour. They are amorphous metallic alloys; as the name suggests, being glasses, they do not possess long range order because of their amorphous nature; formed by metals, they are not transparent to light. As a result, they exhibit unique chemical, physical, mechanical and magnetic properties compared to conventional crystalline metallic alloys. In particular, their high yield strength together with the possibility of casting them into bulk form has triggered the interest in using them as structural materials. However, plastic deformation at room temperature occurs in a highly localized manner by the formation of a few shear bands. Instead of work hardening, metallic glasses soften upon deformation, which prevents stable plastic elongation. Once yielding has set in, most metallic glasses tend to fracture in a brittle manner, with almost total lack of plasticity, restricting their use in many applications. As expected, in the last decade, many works were focused on the circumvention of this limited plasticity. Apart from some specific cases where intrinsic plasticity was observed, precipitation of a second phase was found to be the most effective way to promote multiple shear band formation and obtain both, high strength and enhanced plasticity. Many methods were developed to achieve such heterogeneous microstructure. For instance, the second phase can be physically added to the alloy prior to casting, precipitated directly from the melt or by thermal or mechanical treatments of the as-cast alloy. Following one of those procedures a microstructure composed of either a micro- or nano- sized crystalline, quasi-crystalline or non-crystalline phases embedded in an amorphous matrix can be synthesized. The structural and mechanical changes induced in metallic glasses by annealing, element addition and deformation form the main topic of the work presented in this Thesis. The microstructural changes have been characterized by calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The influence of these changes on the mechanical behaviour of these glasses has been mainly investigated through compression tests and nanoindentation tests. Structural and mechanical changes upon annealing have been studied in two families of metallic glasses: a Ti40Zr10Cu38Pd12 alloy and a Fe36Co36B19.2Si4.8Nb4 alloy. Annealing treatments of these alloys around Tg, when disperse nanacrystallites are embedded in an amorphous matrix, results in enhanced mechanical properties. However, the former is believed to deteriorate plasticity due to structural relaxation of the amorphous structure. On the other hand, the appearance of tiny nanocrystals embedded in an amorphous matrix is found to be the responsible of the increase above 10% of plastic strain when 3 % of Nb is added to the amorphous Ti40Zr10Cu38Pd12 alloy. However, a brittle behaviour is observed if the Nb content is exceedingly high (4%). The structural and mechanical changes experienced by metallic glasses upon deformation treatments have also been subject of study in this thesis. While strain softening in the Ti40Zr25Ni8Cu9Be18 metallic glass alloy takes place as deformation proceeds (by means of compression test as well as during nanoindentation), in the Zr62Cu18Ni10Al10 BMG the opposite effect, strain hardening, is observed. The possible reasons of the observed dissimilar behaviour have been explained in terms of free volume, crystallization and changes in the short range order.

Aquesta Tesi engloba la fabricació i caracterització de materials sostenibles com poden ser partícules de bismut (Bi), capes de ferrita de bismut (BiFeO3) i aliatges de base Cu amb memòria de forma. S’ha emprat l’electrodeposició per obtenir partícules de Bi micromètriques i submicromètriques a partir d’un electròlit aquós així com també per sintetitzar capes de BiFeO3 a partir d’un bany de dimetilformamida seguit d’un tractament tèrmic en aire. Els aliatges amb memòria de forma de coure-alumini-níquel (Cu–Al–Ni) s’han fabricat mitjançant polvorització catòdica. Per obtenir les capes primes de Cu–Al–Ni s’han utilitzat dues metodologies diferents: d’una banda, s’han dipositat capes de Cu-Ni i Al alternativament per tal d’obtenir una estructura tipus sandvitx; seguidament les capes s’han tractat tèrmicament i s’han trempat en aigua gelada. D’altra banda, s’han crescut capes de Cu–Al–Ni en substrats de MgO aplicant temperatura. Les capes s’han caracteritzat morfològicament mitjançant microscòpia electrònica de rastreig (SEM). Per a la caracterització estructural s’ha utilitzat difracció de raigs X (XRD) i microscòpia electrònica de transmissió (TEM). Les capes de ferrita de bismut s’han mesurat per magnetometria de mostra vibrant (VSM). Per tal de conèixer les temperatures de transició de fase de les capes de Cu–Al–Ni s’han dut a terme mesures de resistivitat en funció de la temperatura. S’ha estudiat la morfologia de les partícules de bismut en funció de la composició del bany, de l’activitat del substrat i del potencial aplicat. A mesura que s’augmenta el valor absolut del potencial aplicat es va observar un canvi en la morfologia de les partícules (d’hexàgons a dendrites) independentment del substrat utilitzat. Cal remarcar que les partícules de bismut recobreixen el substrat de forma més homogènia (sense aglomeracions) quan s’afegeix gluconat de sodi al bany. La caracterització estructural de les capes de BiFeO3 preparades per electrodeposició i posterior tractament tèrmic revelà que l’estructura romboèdrica de BiFeO3 (interessant pel seu caràcter multiferroic) es forma al voltant dels 600 °C. El lleuger senyal ferromagnètic observat a la capa tractada tèrmicament a 600 °C s'atribueix principalment al seu caràcter nanostructurat, la qual cosa afavoreix l'aparició de fenòmens d’inclinació aleatòria dels espins a la superfície (efecte conegut com a spin canting) en la fase BiFeO3. En les capes de Cu–Al–Ni preparades per polvorització catòdica i posterior tractament tèrmic, s’observà que un canvi gradual en la seva composició (és a dir, disminució del contingut d'Al i un augment del contingut de Ni) comporta un canvi en la fase formada a temperatura ambient (de martensita a austenita). Les capes obtingudes presenten una estructura policristal·lina orientada aleatòriament. D'altra banda, en les capes de Cu–Al–Ni fabricades a alta temperatura en substrats de MgO, es va detectar un creixement texturat en (200) a causa de la relació epitaxial entre la capa i el substrat. Les mesures de resistivitat versus temperatura van posar de manifest l’existència de transformació martensítica en la capa austenítica texturada mentre que no es va observar transformació en la capa austenítica orientada aleatòriament. Finalment, s'ha fet una contextualització general del potencial que presenten els materials desenvolupats en aquesta Tesi com a candidats sostenibles en sistemes micro i nano. This thesis dissertation includes the synthesis and characterization of sustainable materials including bismuth (Bi), bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) and copper-based shape memory alloys. Electrodeposition and sputter deposition were employed as the synthesis techniques. Electrodeposition was used in order to obtain micron and submicron sized Bi particles from an aqueous electrolyte and BiFeO3 films when electrodeposition from dimethylformamide bath was followed by heat treatment of the resulting coatings in open air. Sputter deposition was applied to produce copper-aluminium-nickel (Cu–Al–Ni) shape memory alloys. Two approaches were followed to obtain the Cu–Al–Ni thin films. In one of the methods applied, multilayers of Cu-Ni and Al were first sputtered, followed by heat treatment and quenching in iced water while, in the other method, epitaxial growth of austenitic Cu–Al–Ni on MgO substrate was obtained by sputter deposition along with in-situ heat treatment. Morphological characterization of the samples was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used for structural characterization. For the investigation of magnetic properties of the bismuth ferrite films, vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) was implemented. In order to observe the martensitic transformation behaviour in the sputter deposited Cu–Al–Ni films, electrical resistivity measurements with respect to temperature were carried out. The morphology of the Bi particles was investigated as a function of the bath composition, substrate activity and the applied potential. In all cases, it was seen that as the absolute value of the applied potential increased, an evolution in the particle morphology from hexagons to dendrites was observed. Moreover, Bi particles were more uniformly distributed over the substrate when sodium gluconate was added to the electrolyte. The characterization studies for the BiFeO3 films prepared by electrodeposition and subsequent heat treatment revealed that rhombohedral BiFeO3 (interesting for its multiferroic character) formed around 600 °C. At lower and higher temperatures, secondary binary and ternary oxide phases were encountered. The observed weak ferromagnetic-like behaviour in the film annealed at 600 °C is mainly ascribed to nanostructuration which, in turn, favours the occurrence of spin canting in the BiFeO3 phase. In the free-standing Cu–Al–Ni films prepared by sputter deposition and subsequent heat treatment, it was observed that a gradual change in the film composition (i.e. decrease in the Al content and an increase in the Ni content) resulted in a shift in the room temperature phase formation from martensite to austenite. The obtained films exhibited a randomly oriented polycrystalline structure. On the other hand, for the austenitic Cu–Al–Ni film grown at high temperature on MgO substrates, a (200) textured growth of the film was observed due to the epitaxial relationship between the film and the substrate. The electrical resistance change vs. temperature measurements revealed that martensitic transformation was observed in the textured austenite film whereas it was not observed in the randomly oriented austenite film. The potential of the materials investigated throughout this Thesis as sustainable candidates in micro- and nanosystems is outlined.

Aquesta tesi doctoral comprèn la síntesi d’aliatges basats en ferro mitjançant diversos mètodes de fabricació. Aquests aliatges s’han dissenyat amb la intenció de ser utilitzats en biomedicina o en aplicacions mediambientals. S’ha donat especial èmfasi a dissenyar una composició adequada i a estudiar la morfologia i les propietats estructurals per tal d’optimitzar tant les propietats mecàniques com les propietats magnètiques dels materials resultants. En primer lloc es va utilitzar la tècnica de fusió per arc i colada per succió amb motlle de coure per fabricar dos aliatges densos: un aliatge ferromagnètic amb composició en pes Fe-10Mn6Si1Pd i un aliatge paramagnètic amb memòria de forma amb composició en pes Fe-30Mn6Si1Pd. L’evolució de la microestructura, les propietats mecàniques i magnètiques, així com també la degradació, la citotoxicitat i la proliferació de cèl·lules en solució Hanks es van estudiar de forma sistemática en funció del temps d’immersió. Per tal de millorar la biocompatibilitat de l’aliatge Fe-10Mn6Si1Pd, aquest aliatge es va recobrir amb fosfat de calci (brushita o hidroxilapatita) mitjançant la tècnica d’electrodeposició per corrent polsant. A conseqüència de la morfologia porosa d’aquests recobriments (per exemple: en forma d’agulles, cilindres o plaques), el mòdul de Young i la duresa mesurades foren inferiors als valors obtinguts en recobriments anàlegs no porosos. Seguidament, amb l’objectiu d’incrementar la velocitat de degradació i reduir el mòdul de Young d’aquests aliatges compactes, es van fabricar aliatges porosos de Fe-30Mn6Si1Pd mitjançant un procés de premsa i sinterització de Fe, Si, Mn i Pd en pols prèviament mòlta i barrejada amb un 10, un 20 o un 40% en pes de NaCl en un molí de boles. Cal destacar, que després de submergir els aliatges porosos durant un període llarg de temps, el mòdul de Young reduït que es va mesurar en tots ells va ser d’uns 20 GPa (essent aquest valor similar al mòdul de Young de l’os humà, entre 3-27 GPa). Aquest fet afavoriria una bona compatibilitat biomecànica entre l’implant i el teixit ossi veí. Per altra banda, es van fabricar escumes de Fe i Fe-Mn de cèl·la oberta utilitzant matrius de poliuretà poroses pel mètode de rèplica. Es va observar que la resposta magnètica d’aquestes escumes, des de pràcticament no magnètica a ferrimagnètica, es podia controlar ajustant el contingut de Mn i el flux de N2. També, en el marc de propietats magnètiques, es va utilitzar la tècnica d’irradiació amb làser polsat de femtosegon per crear patrons magnètics periòdics a la superfície d'un aliatge amorf no ferromagnètic basat en Fe. Finalment, es va preparar un aliatge nanoporós ric en Fe per dissolució selectiva de cintes de Fe43.5Cu56.5 fabricades per tornejat en estat de fusió. Es va observar que els materials nanoporosos eren un excel·lent catalitzador heterogeni de la reacció de Fenton per la degradació del taronja de metil en solució aquosa., This Thesis dissertation covers different synthetic approaches to obtain Fe-based alloys to be used for biomedical and environmental applications. Special emphasis has been placed to design a proper composition and to study the morphology and structural properties to tailor both the mechanical and magnetic properties of the resulting materials. Firstly, ferromagnetic Fe-10Mn6Si1Pd (wt.%) and shape memory, paramagnetic Fe-30Mn6Si1Pd (wt.%) compact alloys were prepared by arc-melting followed by copper mold suction casting. The evolution of microstructure, mechanical and magnetic properties, as well as the assessment of degradation, cytotoxicity and cell proliferation in Hank’s solution as a function of the immersion time were systermatically studied. With the aim to improve the biocompatibility of the Fe-10Mn6Si1Pd alloy, calcium phosphate coatings (CaP) (i.e., brushite and hydroxyapatite) were electrodeposited on the alloy by pulsed current electrodeposition. Due to porous structures resulting from needle-, rod- or plate-like morphologies, the measured Young’s modulus and hardness of these coatings were lower than those of fully-dense CaP layers with analogous compositions. Then, to increase the degradation rate and to reduce the Young’s modulus of the fully bulk alloys, porous Fe-30Mn6Si1Pd (wt.%) alloys were prepared by a simple press and sinter process from ball-milled Fe, Mn, Si and Pd powders blended with 10 wt.%, 20 wt.% and 40 wt.% NaCl. Remarkably, the reduced Young’s modulus of all the porous alloys reached values close to 20 GPa after long-term immersion, a value which is close to the Young’s modulus of human bones (3–27 GPa), hence favoring good biomechanical compatibility between an eventual implant and the neighboring bone tissue. Meanwhile, open cell Fe and Fe-Mn oxides foams were prepared by the replication method using porous polyurethane templates. The magnetic response of the foams, from virtually non-magnetic to ferrimagnetic, could be tailored by controllably adjusting the Mn content as well as the N2 flow rate. Still dealing with magnetic properties, femtosecond pulsed laser irradiation was used to create periodic magnetic patterns at the surface of a non-ferromagnetic amorphous Fe-based alloy. Finally, a nanoporous Fe-rich alloy was prepared by selective dissolution of melt-spun Fe43.5Cu56.5 ribbons. The nanoporous ribbons were found to be an excellent heterogeneous Fenton catalyst towards the degradation of methyl orange in aqueous solution.
