The self-compacting concrete (SCC) filling layer is a key structural component of the China railway track system type III ballastless track structure. The quality of the filling layer directly affects the durability, comfort and safety of the track system. Based on job site practice in the construction of the Zhengzhou–Fuyang high-speed railway, the distribution characteristics of the dynamic elastic modulus and homogenisation index of the SCC used as the filling layer with different workability parameters (slump flow, T500 and filling time) were obtained by sampling the SCC core from the filling layer. Image analysis software was employed to analyse the size and distribution characteristics of the surface defects statistically. The filling layer quality was evaluated according to the homogenisation index and the surface defect ratio. The results showed that the dynamic elastic modulus of the SCC in the filling layer tended to decrease from the intermediate filling hole to the four outlets. The order of influence of workability parameters on the filling layer quality was found to be T500, slump flow and filling time.

Supplementary cementitious materials have significant potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the production of construction materials. This work investigated the synergistic effect of partially replacing cement by sewage sludge ash and limestone for sustainable cementitious material production. The hydration phases and pore structure characteristics were determined by X-ray diffraction and the BET nitrogen sorption method, respectively. A central composite rotational design (CCRD) was used to study the effect of the water binder ratio (w/b), sludge ash and limestone content on the compressive strength. The results of microstructure tests showed that the addition of limestone enhanced the formation of carboaluminate hydrates. The additional hydration products filled in large pores of paste, resulting in a well-refined microstructure of the ternary mixture. Thus, the 90-day strength activity index (SAI) of mortar with 15% sludge ash and 7.5% limestone was 100.6% compared to the reference. Despite the adverse effect of limestone on the compressive strength, the synergistic effect of sludge ash and limestone contributed to the reduction of economic cost and greenhouse gas emission in the production of sustainable cementitious materials. For the same compressive strength level, the ternary mixture composed of 15% sludge ash and 7.5% ground limestone reduced Portland cement consumption by 23.13% and CO2-eq emission intensity by 13.52%.

Sewage sludge ash has potential to be used as supplementary cementitious material in the production of building materials. The chemical effect of sewage sludge ash on early-age hydration of cement was investigated in this study. Two types of sludge ash calcined at 600 °C (S600) and 800 °C (S800) were blended with cement for analysis of hydration heat evolution, solid phase assemblage and aqueous composition. The aluminate dissolution of S600 ash promoted the formation of ettringite and consumption of gypsum, resulting in a high initial hydration heat. However, high concentrations of Al and Si caused by continuous dissolution of aluminate and silicate in S600 ash inhibited significantly the C3S dissolution. Interestingly, S800 ash had slight effect on early cement hydration since higher calcination temperature decreased the activity of aluminate. As compared with the reference, cumulative hydration heat of blended paste with 30% S800 ash at 7 days was increased by 18.72% indicating the occurrence of reaction between sludge ash and cement. Further study is recommended to focus on the long-term performance of cement-based materials blended with sludge ash.

The application of aluminum-based flocculant in wastewater treatment results in a large amount of aluminum-rich sewage sludge. This work investigated the influence of calcination process on physicochemical characteristics and pozzolanic activity of aluminum (Al)-rich sludge ash and studied the effect of sludge ash on cement hydration. The results showed that higher calcination temperature from 600 ℃ to 900 ℃ increased the amorphous content in sludge ash. The pozzolanic activity of sludge ash calcined at 800 ℃ and 900 ℃ was confirmed by Frattini test. In view of strength activity index of blended mortar and energy conservation, the optimal calcination condition of sewage sludge ash was calcined at 800 ℃ with air-cooling. The addition of sludge ash promoted the transformation of ettringite to monosulfate phase in cement paste. However, the high Al concentration dissolved from S6 and S7 ash inhibited significantly the cement hydration and resulted in low compressive strength values of the blended mortars. The pozzolanic reaction of S8 and S9 ash produced more hydration heat and additional Al-bearing products such as katoite and monosulfate which contributed to the strength development of mortars. Furthermore, the heavy metals in sewage sludge can be immobilized in ash structure during calcination process and the structure of hydration products, which ensures the environmental security of sludge ash utilization in construction materials.

To clarify the volume deformation characteristics and residual expansion deformation formation mechanism of steam-cured concrete, the content of free water and air of fresh concrete before heating, and the hydration kinetics and mechanical characteristics evolution of concrete during the steam curing process were obtained by experiment and fitting. The residual expansion strain calculation model of steam-cured concrete was proposed and its accuracy was verified by a non-contact test. Results showed that: (i) the volume deformation characteristics of steam-cured concrete could be divided into two stages: rapid expansion in heating stage, then rapid shrinkage in constant temperature treating period and gentle shrinkage in cooling period; besides, an irrecoverable residual deformation was gained at the end of cooling period; (ii) the tested peak value of residual expansion strain of steam-cured concrete appeared at 0.5–1 h later than the fitting value, and the final tested residual expansion strain is lower than the fitting value; (iii) the higher the initial free water content and the lower the initial structural strength, the greater the final residual expansion deformation of steam-cured concrete. This paper aims to reveal the mechanism of residual expansion deformation and propose a method of restraining the deformation of high-speed railway steam-cured concrete. This paper could provide technical support for the production of steam-cured concrete prefabricated components and predict the residual expansion deformation.

In this study, the isothermal calorimetry was employed to measure the heat release rate and total heat release of cement composites incorporated with expanding agent, viscosity modifier and nano-SiO2 at low temperatures. The results indicate that expanding agent and viscosity modifier decrease the maximal heat release rate of cement composites and make the arrival time of the maximal heat release rate in advance. The addition of nano-SiO2 can shorten the induction period and increase the maximal heat release rate at different temperatures. The influencing regularity of expanding agent and viscosity modifier on hydration process remains unchanged with temperature, and the effect of nano-SiO2 is more significant under lower temperature. The use of expanding agent and viscosity modifier accelerates the nucleation process significantly and decreases the growth rate of hydration products to some degrees. In comparison to the admixtures, temperature is the dominant factor for growth rate of hydration products.

In order to understand the influencing mechanisms of curing temperature on the performances of steam cured concrete further, the microhardness characteristics of the interfacial transition zone between cement paste and coarse aggregate under different curing temperatures were studied through microhardness measurements, backscattered electronic microscopy (BSEM) and mathematical statistical analysis. The experimental results indicate that the microhardness of the hardened cement paste presents a significant statistical distribution characteristic. That is to say, there are two microhardness characteristic values which reflect the hydrated products and unhydrated cement particles, respectively. The curing temperature has a significant effect on the microhardness of interfacial transition zone. In other words, the microhardness decreases, and the thickness range of interfacial transition zone increases with increasing the curing temperature. The relationship of the microhardness value of the interfacial transition zone to the distance from the aggregate surface conforms to the Peal function.

The precast structures prepared by steam-cured concrete have been increasingly used in order to speed up the construction of China’s High-Speed Rail and passenger dedicated lines in recent years. In the high-cold regions, such as Harbin, the precast concrete structures are exposed to continuous subfreezing temperature for several months every year. However, the influence of continuous subfreezing condition on mechanical properties of concrete has not been systematically investigated yet. According to the Laplace Equation and Gibbs-Duhem Equation, the theoretical size of minimal frozen pores and ice content in water-saturation concrete at −20 °C can be calculated. It is discovered that the change ratios of mechanical properties are related to the theoretical ice content in concrete. Phenomenological models between change ratios and ice content are established based on hyperbolic equations. Finally, the mechanism of phase transition of free water on mechanical properties is explained by means of classical fracture theory of concrete. In this research, a contrastive research was carried out under two temperature conditions of 20 °C and −20 °C on mechanical properties of steam cured concrete at 28 days, including compressive strength, flexural strength, dynamic modulus of elasticity and damping ratio. Experimental results obtained at −20 °C indicate that compressive strength, flexural strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity increase to some extent and damping ratio decreases. And the application of supplementary cementitious materials (fly ash and GGBS) on concrete has a significant impact on the variation ratio of mechanical properties under freezing temperatures. The results of micro structure by quantitative test reveal that the pore distribution was greatly optimized and the percent of harmful pore were substantially reduced by the supplementary materials of fly ash or GGBS.

Filling layer self-compacting concrete (FLSCC) is a key construction material in China Rail Track System (CRTS) III slab ballastless track and its resistance to impact loading is of great importance to the service security of high-speed train. In this paper, the dynamic mechanical characteristics of FLSCC under impact loading were investigated with a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) at strain rates ranging from 101 s−1 to 102 s−1. Results show that the compressive strength, peak strain, elastic modulus and toughness ratio of FLSCC all increase with strain rate. The increase factors of compressive strength (DIFc) and strain (DIFe) of FLSCC increase linearly with decimal logarithm of strain rate. The elastic modulus (Ed) and toughness ratio (TR) increase linearly with strain rate. Self-compacting concrete (SCC) shows greater strain rate effect than normal concrete (NC). However, FLSCC presents lower strain rate effect but better toughness performance than normal SCC. The incorporation of large content of SP and VMA provides FLSCC with higher porosity, which makes it possess excellent dynamic mechanical performance.

Filling layer self-compacting concrete (FLSCC) is a key material in newly-built China Rail Track System (CRTS), which is commonly subjected to cyclic dynamic load from high-speed train and various ambient temperature during service. In this paper, a series of indoor simulating experiments was conducted to investigate the impact resistance of FLSCC suffering from cyclic flexural load and different temperature conditions with a Φ75 mm split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The dynamic increase factors were introduced to evaluate the strain rate effect on various mechanical properties of FLSCC and the corresponding mechanisms were explained. Results show that the dynamic increase factor of compressive strength (DIFc) and peak strain (DIFe) of FLSCC increase linearly with logarithm of strain rate, while specific energy absorption increases exponentially with strain rate. The impact resistance of FLSCC is greatly influenced by cyclic flexural load and low temperature. The strain rate sensitivity of compressive strength of FLSCC at minus temperature (−20°C) is weaker than that at normal temperature (20°C) and after freeze-cyclic load coupling action the sensitivity decreases further. Similar tendencies were also observed in peak strain and specific energy absorption.

As one of the core components, high quality self-compacting concrete filling layer is of great importance to the long-term safe service of CRTS III type slab ballastless track. The present paper designed a freeze and flexural-loading coupling action testing system to investigate the mechanical characteristics of self-compacting concrete applied in filling layer (FLSCC), aiming at understanding the service behavior of filling layer under severe environment condition. The effects of temperature, cycle number and stress level on mechanical properties including flexural strength, dynamic elastic modulus and damping ratio of FLSCC were discussed. Results show that the freeze and cyclic load coupling action aggravates the deterioration of concrete compared to single cyclic load condition. FLSCC exhibits better resistance to freeze and cyclic load action than other three investigated concretes in term of flexural strength, dynamic elastic modulus and damping ratio. The flexural strength of FLSCC decreases with increasing cycle number stress level at low temperature (−20 °C) and the damage variable of FLSCC increases exponentially with cycle number. The outstanding resistance of FLSCC to freeze and cyclic load coupling action results from the excellent microstructure which can maintain its good deformation capacity and delay the damage propagation.

Steam-cured concrete with high early strength has been widely applied in high-speed railway. However, heat damage caused by the steam curing process brings adverse effects on the pore structure and durability of steam-cured concrete. It has been found that phase change materials (PCMs) help improve the durability of cement-based materials. Therefore, the influences of two PCMs on the strength, water absorption, and microstructure of steam-cured mortar are discussed in this study. Two PCMs used include pure paraffin and a composite phase change material composed of porous diatomite and paraffin (D/P). The results show that the addition of appropriate PCMs does not significantly reduce the strength of steam-cured mortar. The addition of a small amount of PCMs shows little influence on the pore structure of steam-cured mortar but effective in improving the water-penetration resistance. This is partially attributed to the improvement of hydrophobic characteristics in the pores, resulting from the adhesion of hydrophobic PCMs on the pores during the steam curing. Compared with specimens containing pure paraffin, the pore structure of specimens containing D/P is refined, resulting in higher compressive strength. This may be due to the uniform distribution of small particles D/P in the specimen and the pozzolanic reaction of diatomite in D/P. The use of suitable phase change materials will be helpful to improve the durability of steam-cured concrete.

Understanding the dynamic behavior of Lightweight Aggregate Self-Compacting Concrete (LWASCC) is of importance to the safety of concrete structures serving in dynamic loading conditions. In this study, the fundamental dynamic properties of LWASCC with three types of LWA were investigated by the impact resonance method. Results show that the dynamic elastic and shear modulus generally decrease with the increase of LWA volume fraction, whereas three types of LWA exert limited influence on dynamic Poisson’s ratio. The dynamic elastic and shear modulus show good linear dependence upon compressive strength. The inclusion of three types of LWA significantly increases the damping ratio, indicating significantly enhanced damping capacity of LWASCC under dynamic loading conditions. The damping ratio of LWASCC is improved by 2.0%, 4.4%, and 2.9% when adding 1% (by volume) expanded clay, rubber, and expanded polystyrene, respectively. The compressive strength and dynamic performances of LWASCC are highly influenced by the intrinsic properties (elastic modulus, damping capacity, wettability, etc.) and geometrical characteristics (size, surface roughness, etc.) of LWA, as well as the LWA-matrix bonding capacity. Steam curing is commonly used to produce the prefabricated elements to meet the requirement of the high early strength. However, this curing regime was proved to lead to the thermal damage on the microstructure and properties of concrete. And the subsequent curing after initial steam curing is critical to the development of performances of steam-cured concrete. In this study, four typical subsequent curing conditions simulating the extreme service environments were employed on the curing of steam-cured concrete. And the surface permeability indexes involving water and air permeations and compressive strength were measured to analyze the effects of subsequent curing condition on performance of steam-cured concrete. The results indicate that the surface permeability and strength development of steam-cured concrete are remarkably influenced by the subsequent curing condition. The subsequent curing such as long-term water-soaking curing at 20 °C or oven-dry curing at 60 °C deteriorates the performances of steam-cured concrete. Their surface permeability indexes are 75.1% and 88.0% higher than that of standard-cured concrete at 90 days, respectively. The continuous dissolution of calcium hydroxide is considered the main reason for deterioration of impermeability and strength of steam-cured concrete.

Magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) was proved to be a cementitious material for preparing porous materials with high early-stage strength under standard curing condition. However, the poor water resistance of MPC-based porous materials limits the further application. This study employs metakaolin to improve the performance of aerated MPC. Testing results indicate that the presence of metakaolin produces more finer pores which makes the pore structure more homogeneous. For this reason, metakaolin improves both the compressive strength and water resistance with little negative impact on the thermal insulation property of aerated MPC. The metakaolin modified aerated MPC with a density of about 650 kg/m3 has 3-h strength of about 3 MPa and thermal conductivity of about 0.08 W/mK.

The main goal of our work was to study mechanism of interfacial adhesion between basalt fiber and asphalt. Solution of silane coupling agent (2.5 wt%, KH-550) was used to modify fiber surface. Modified fibers were then used for fiber-reinforced asphalt fabrication with different fiber concentrations (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt%). Samples were analyzed by DMA, DSR, EDS, ESEM, ACAM and FTIR. Treatment with KH-550 resulted in fibers with rough surface and weak hydrophilicity. It also increased surface area of fibers, improved their compatibility with asphalt and enhanced their chemical bonding with asphalt, all of which resulted in overall increase of mechanical performance of asphalt. Our research provides foundation for fiber surface modification for applications in road pavement engineering.
