Artificial intelligence is the unification of philosophy, cognitive science, mathematics, neurophysiology, psychology, computer science, information theory, cybernetics, and uncertainty theory. Therefore, it is feasible and necessary to utilize STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Liberal Arts, and Mathematics) education to learn artificial intelligence courses. Computational thinking skills are of vital importance to high school students. This paper integrates artificial intelligence education with STEAM model with the aim of enhancing students' computational thinking skills. First, we investigate the feasibility of this model and set teaching objectives about artificial intelligence curricula. Second, artificial intelligence curricula with STEAM model is proposed to carry out interdisciplinary artificial intelligence knowledge acquisition. Finally, the effects of this model on students' computational thinking skills, learning motivation, and self-efficacy are evaluated. One hundred thirty-six participants are recruited from a high school in Beijing. The results reveal that the integration of artificial intelligence education with STEAM is able to promote computational thinking skills, learning motivation, and self-efficacy of the students in the experimental group. The main implication of this study is that artificial intelligence education in light of STEAM model can be used as a teaching guide for the combination of artificial intelligence curricula with multi-disciplinary knowledge at the primary and secondary levels. Taiwan holds the Asian record for the proportion of families that involve so-called 'foreign brides'. Marriage migration has brought close to half a million immigrant spouses into the country over the past decades. Most of these women come from Mainland China, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines. This paper discusses how the Taiwanese state and society have actively pursued the integration of immigrant spouses since 2002, with a set of policies that acknowledge the massive migration of 'foreign brides' and the impact of this phenomenon on society. It argues that the attempt to integrate new immigrants is fraught with a discourse that serves to further stigmatize these women, discriminate against them, and, therefore, create an 'Other' that is used to erect the ideology of nation-building in Taiwan. The paper provides a critical analysis of policies, academic discourse and NGOs fundraising strategies to show how these institutions reinforce the idea that immigrant spouses are problematic and, therefore, need to be 'Taiwanized'. This results in a system of differential legal and social citizenship in which immigrant spouses are at the bottom of the social hierarchy in Taiwanese society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite his pioneering analysis on Taiwanese cultural subjectivity, Hung Yao-hsün's philosophical significance has not been studied. The aim of this paper is threefold. It first argues that, contrary to conventional wisdom, Hung not only introduced western ideas, but also founded Formosan Philosophy: His adaptation of German Philosophy to cultural issues during the period of the Japanese colonization of Taiwan--just as with the Kyoto School in Japan and the New Confucianism in China--should be considered a part of the genuine thinking revolution in East Asia. This paper next examines the causal relationship between his philosophical theory and the spatial-temporal world in which he lived. It argues that Hung's interest in the nature of Taiwanese folk society is an advanced enquiry of his investigation of fundamental ontology. This paper examines the work of the Taiwanese troupe Performance Workshop (Biaoyan gongzuofang) under director and playwright Stan Lai, specifically Peach Blossom Land, Strange Tales from Taiwan, and I Me He Him. These plays address the disjunction of space and time through a particular device, namely splitting the stage between 'here' and 'there', 'now' and 'then'. Characters and their alter-egos share the same stage, a situation that results in awkward and fragmented dialogs. The cohabitation of incompatible temporal dimensions gives rise to many comical situations, foregrounds the futility of the characters' search for stable identities, and demonstrates the existence of irreconcilable though mutually resonant temporal planes. The double play often becomes a metaphor for the mirroring existence on the two sides of the Taiwan Straits, as well as for the role of theater itself in teasing out and negotiating between these ambiguous similarities. Lai's plays give the lie to neat distinctions between local Taiwanese and pan-Chinese identities, and stress the heightened sense of dislocation in a globalizing society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present paper, a preliminary statement on the traditional-modern bicultural self in contemporary Taiwan was proposed and our presentation was organized in four parts. First, a theoretical and conceptual analysis was attempted to describe the emergence and composition of the traditional-modern bicultural self of the contemporary Taiwanese people. The cultural and social roots of such a bicultural self were explored, and its constituting elements delineated and their interrelations analyzed. Second, relevant empirical evidence pertaining to this particular model of the Chinese bicultural self was reviewed. Third, our present model was related and compared against various existing bicultural self models. Finally, directions and issues for future research on the Chinese bicultural self were discussed. This essay investigates the conditions of portrait photography in Taiwan during Japanese colonization. After a brief introduction to the theoretical issues concerning the indexical nature of the photograph, I consider the Japanese colonial photographic industry and its products (portraits) in three contexts: the state of photographic technology in the world at that time, the ideological machinery of colonization in Taiwan, and the wider phenomenon of colonial mimicry. In this consideration, I offer a diachronic analysis of photo albums and commercial directories that contain formal portraits of politically and economically influential (almost exclusively) men. Bringing these considerations together suggests an aspect of the colonial ideological machinery that has been underrepresented in other studies: the colonial portrait as a mask in several forms. This article investigates cultural interactions and influences between Japan and Taiwan in the realm of popular culture during the later half of the colonial period and the immediate postcolonial era (1920s to 1960s). In particular, it focuses on the genre of crime fiction, a genre that enjoyed widespread readership that cut across all spectrum of the colonial society. It examines the history and scope of crime fiction as a transnational genre fiction that first emerged in Anglo-American literary production in the mid-nineteenth century. Its rapid dissemination, first to Japan and then to its colonies, serves as an indicator for one to track the trajectory of a cultural current that emphasizes scientific methods and logical, deductive reasoning. Using close reading of several (post)colonial texts that involved ethnic body, local and cosmopolitan identities, social chaos caused by crime and the restoration of social order and colonial authority. An essay is presented on the design culture of Taiwan as affected by the Japanese colonial period and Western design influences. The essay offers information on the development of modern Japanese design, the influence of Western design on Japan and contrasts the early graphic design styles of both cultures. The author goes on to discuss modern design in Colonial Taiwan art education under Japanese rule.

ICOMOS emphasised in the 2008 Québec Declaration that the 'Spirit of Place,' possessed by monuments and sites, must be preserved, the idea spread and promoted, and that digital technology should be extensively utilised. Xuejia Tzu-chi Temple in Taiwan, an ancestral temple that inherited the traditional belief of Bao Sheng Da Di (, God of medicine) from Baijiao (), holds much religious significance and is crucial to the residents' spiritual sustenance and community. Among those objects preserved in this temple are the intricate Ye Wang's Koji potteries as well as various other precious cultural relics, making the palace an important research base for Taiwan's traditional arts. As such, religion, society, art and other elements coalesce to form the unique spirit of place of the Tzu-chi Temple. This study, under the principle of continuity in space, focuses on the temple square, corridors spanning different areas, the pantheon, and uses 'image-based interactive panoramic imaging technology' to capture a total of 45 spatial scenes, recording the overall spatial construct and the paths within which the space could move, completing the spirit of space of the object, and recording the track of space. Then setting this as the basis for establishing a recording of various activities of the humanities and for preserving the spirit of place of the Xuejia Tzu-chi Temple for future generations, we hope that the results of this study will provide various relevant types of digital recording for research on spatial construct in monuments. This research by social scientists from Bulgaria, Germany and Taiwan started with the question of how a comparison of the institutional cultures of these three countries could be done. 'Institutional culture', here, refers to the traditions of society as well as to the values of particular institutions. The authors attempt an answer by exploring problems of cultural comparison, by describing the research process as a meeting of cultures, by developing an agreed upon conceptual framework to orient the analysis. They exemplify their approach in comparable descriptions of the core cultures and of the related economic-political exchange cultures of the three countries. This allows a contrast between the institutional cultures of different 'civilizations', and the authors provide a matrix of traditions and exchange patterns for empirical research on particular economic phenomena.
