The spread of infectious diseases was further promoted due to busy cities, increased travel, and climate change, which led to outbreaks, epidemics, and even pandemics. The world experienced the severity of the 125 nm virus called the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a pandemic declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019. Many investigations revealed a strong correlation between humidity and temperature relative to the kinetics of the virus's spread into the hosts. This study aimed to solve the riddle of the correlation between environmental factors and COVID-19 by applying RepOrting standards for Systematic Evidence Syntheses (ROSES) with the designed research question. Five temperature and humidity-related themes were deduced via the review processes, namely 1) The link between solar activity and pandemic outbreaks, 2) Regional area, 3) Climate and weather, 4) Relationship between temperature and humidity, and 5) the Governmental disinfection actions and guidelines. A significant relationship between solar activities and pandemic outbreaks was reported throughout the review of past studies. The grand solar minima (1450-1830) and solar minima (1975-2020) coincided with the global pandemic. Meanwhile, the cooler, lower humidity, and low wind movement environment reported higher severity of cases. Moreover, COVID-19 confirmed cases and death cases were higher in countries located within the Northern Hemisphere. The Blackbox of COVID-19 was revealed through the work conducted in this paper that the virus thrives in cooler and low-humidity environments, with emphasis on potential treatments and government measures relative to temperature and humidity. The main objective of the study was to determine the effect of impregnation of the paper core with acetylated starch on the mechanical properties and absorbed energy in the three-point bending test of wood-based honeycomb panels under varying temperatures and relative air humidity conditions. Nearly six hundred beams in various combinations, three types of facings, three core cells geometries, and two paper thicknesses were tested. The experiment results and their statistical analysis prove a significant relationship between the impregnation of paper with modified starch and mechanical properties. Under global warming and climate change (CC), the vulnerable piece of land is India's Eastern-Himalayan-Region (EHR), where millions' livelihood activities are at risk. Quantifying the degree of CC-induced vulnerability over the highly climate-sensitive mountain zone is challenging due to data inadequacy. This paper attempted to assess the CC perception of kiwifruit growers under EHR and the impact of CC on its cultivation. Perceived and scientific data were used for accurate decision-support information. The climatic variables of two locations were analyzed for trend using Mann–Kendall's test. Results suggested that the rainfall trend was found non-significant for both locations, but there was a negative trend during winter for Pasighat and during all seasons for Itanagar. Maximum temperature exhibited an increasing trend for annual, and minimum temperature showed an increasing trend across seasons for the Pasighat region. For the Itanagar region, the maximum temperature was found to have a significantly increasing trend in all seasons, while the minimum temperature showed an increasing trend during winter and annual seasons. Morning relative humidity showed an increasing trend for annual data for Pasighat, while annual evening relative humidity was significantly increased for Itanagar. The study shows that the indigenous farming communities were following shifting cultivation and diversifying their traditional agriculture to kiwifruit cultivation as an adaptation strategy. The community had a clear perception of CC trends and an inadequate perception of the impact on agriculture, therefore, engaging indigenous communities and other stakeholders to postulate a comprehensive adaptation and mitigation strategy for CC. Projections of West African Monsoon (WAM) precipitation are uncertain. To address this, an improved understanding of the mechanisms driving WAM precipitation change is needed to shed light on inter-model differences and aid model development. The full forcing of increased CO2 can be decomposed into different components such as the impact of ocean warming, or the direct radiative effect of increased CO2. This paper investigates such a decomposition, analysing the effect of a uniform 4K ocean warming whilst keeping atmospheric CO2 concentrations constant. The analysis highlights several mechanisms acting to decrease WAM precipitation over a range of timescales, from days after the abrupt ocean warming, to the long-term equilibrium response. The initial decrease in WAM precipitation is caused by warming and enhanced convection over the ocean, stabilising the atmosphere inland and disrupting the monsoon inflow at low levels. Later in the response (after about 5 days), the WAM precipitation is reduced through a strengthening of the shallow circulation over West Africa, associated with changes in the large-scale temperature gradients and a local warming of the atmosphere related to a soil moisture feedback mechanism over the Sahel. Finally, from around 20 days after the SST increase, the WAM precipitation is also reduced through changes in specific humidity gradients that lead to increased potency of dry air advection into the monsoon rainband. The paper presents the dynamics of the hydrothermal coefficients characterizing agroclimatic resources on the territory of Siberia within the coordinates of 50°–65° N, 60°–120° E during modern climate change. The intensity, frequency, and duration of adverse weather phenomena for agriculture (the atmospheric droughts and moisture excess conditions) are analyzed. The Ped' drought index () and the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) calculated from the data of 134 weather stations and the ERA5 reanalysis are used as an indicator. In Eastern Siberia and in the west of the analyzed territory, there is an increase in aridity (a trend is 0.2–0.5 per decade). Northern regions of Kazakhstan, the Sayan Mountains, and the West Siberian Plain were characterized by a relative stability of hydrothermal conditions in 1950–2020 (statistically significant changes are not revealed). A direct linear dependence of hydrothermal conditions on large-scale circulation processes have been not detected for most cases. Heat stress, resulting from elevated heat and absolute humidity associated with climate change, will increasingly occur in the tropics and parts of the mid-latitudes and could threaten the liveability and viability of many regions. Concomitant with predictions of increased heat stress in northern Australia, the Australian Government seeks to boost the population in northern Australia substantially. This paper assesses the heat stress-related wet-bulb temperatures the largest northern centres could experience under Representative Concentration Pathways 4.5 and 8.5 by 2080. The capture of CO2 from air via direct air capture (DAC) is a promising way to reduce the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. The carbonation of calcium‐based adsorbents using ambient conditions is particularly interesting for DAC due to its high theoretical CO2 uptake capacity and its low cost. In this paper, a new preparation method of synthetic calcium oxide‐based pellets for a DAC process was investigated. Their CO2 capture performance was studied experimentally in a fixed‐bed column and characterization was performed via Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller (BET) analysis, mercury porosimetry, X‐ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Higher heating rates during the precursor calcination process and higher relative humidities during the carbonation process were found to lead to higher CO2 capture efficiencies. Occupant behaviour is a field, that has always been of great interest to researchers. It could significantly modify the operation of the building and the user's energy needs, and it is also difficult to model it according to reality. Evaluation of measurements is a crucial step to calibrate dynamic simulations. Our goal was to analyse the indoor comfort conditions according to measurements, particularly in summertime, and find what solution closes the performance gap between the measured and simulated results. In this research, we investigated an apartment building that underwent an energy efficiency renovation. We have installed a weather station and monitoring sensors in selected apartments, with which we monitored the temperature, relative humidity, and CO2 values of certain rooms, the presence of the inhabitants and the window opening and the operation of shading. In this paper, we focus on the monitoring and simulation results of the topmost apartment. The results can help us better understand how buildings work and how to implement user behaviour in dynamic simulations, how to calibrate the model according to measurements and make suggestions to increase the comfort of the residents. Due to global warming and other climate changes, it is increasingly important to study the response of regional environmental changes and dynamic changes in vegetation to climate change. Based on meteorological data from the last 60 years, this paper calculates the humidity index of western China under a wide range of long time series in different regions and explores the cross-correlation effect between series by offering a comparison with NDVI data, to analyze the cross-correlation between wet and dry changes and changes in vegetation in western China on a spatial scale. The results show that the spatial distribution of the interdecadal humidity index is different between different regions in western China. For example, the semi-arid and the semi-humid zones of the Weihe River region exhibit significant changes, while the Xinjiang and Qinghai–Tibet regions show a trend of constant wetness, on the whole, and the Sichuan and Yunnan–Guizhou regions are relatively humid and the distribution of wetness and dryness is relatively stable. The distribution of high and low values of the humidity index is very obvious and consistent with that of the distribution of desert bare land and precipitation in western China. In common with the distribution in the humidity index, the maximum correlation number between the NDVI and the humidity index in the whole western region is also significantly different in spatial distribution. There is a positive correlation between the NDVI and the humidity index in 99% of the study area. However, the delay in response time of the NDVI to changes in the humidity index in each region is inconsistent. For example, changes in the NDVI lag changes in the humidity index in the Menggan region by generally either 2 months or 5 months, while in the Sichuan region the delay in response time is generally 3 months. The variation and trend in dry and wet areas are closely related to the geographical location, climate zone, and topographic terrain, which may be the reason for the differences in the distribution of vegetation types and the response time to dry and wet changes. There is significant interaction between the humidity index and the vegetation type or precipitation distribution in western China. The positive correlation between the NDVI and the humidity index means that the positive effect is more sensitive, and the response of grassland is the most sensitive in the ecosystem. Canada's climate is warming at a rate about double the global average, leading to potential negative impacts on public infrastructures such as jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP). In light of this reality of changing climate, the work contained in this paper is aimed at evaluating JPCP's early-age behaviour in response to environmental conditions. HIPERPAV® software and the associated models developed by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) were used to identify cracking potential. A sensitivity analysis was performed to assess the effect of different levels of air temperature, mix temperature, base layer temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity. Additionally, projected extreme temperatures predicted by the Canadian Regional Climate Model (CanRCM) were used to determine the relative impact of climate change on cracking risk. The results demonstrated the increased cracking risk under changing climate in several Canadian cities by mid-century and highlighted the importance of developing a pathway forward for climate adaptation. Generally, predicting weather has a great effect on citizen's private life in terms of traveling and decreasing disasters. Several research on forecasting humidity over timeframes of minutes, days, months, and years have been undertaken in the last decade. Physical procedures, statistical or hybrid methods, such as neural networks, are the most often utilized strategies for estimating humidity day-ahead, according to a comprehensive set of forecasting methodology. The purpose of this research is to minimize prediction error. Using a recurrent neural network model and Deep Learning. Inthis paper proposed a three methodto evaluate the performance of relative humidity on the bases of deep learning algorithms. Accurate estimation of ET0, and determination of its trend/variability and sensitivity to changes in climate variables is essential at regional scale for different applications. These are attempted for India by considering 18 homogeneous ET0 regions formed in companion paper. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recommends Penman–Monteith (PM) equation for ET0 estimation, which requires information on several climate variables. The equation cannot be used in data‐sparse areas where information/forecasts on one or more required climate variables is unavailable/unreliable. To address this, relevance vector regression (RVR) relationships are developed in this paper for the 18 homogeneous regions to arrive at FAO‐PM estimate of ET0 from subsets of its predictor climate variables, which could be typically expected in data‐sparse areas. The developed relationships are shown to be better in arriving at ET0 estimates when compared to multiple linear regression (MLR) relationships and three widely used empirical equations (Hargreaves, Mcguinness–Bordne, Priestly–Taylor). Regional trend analysis revealed that ET0 is significantly decreasing (increasing) in most regions located in north (south) India. Sensitivity of ET0 and surface runoff to changes in their predictor climate variables is determined for each region by considering third‐order Taylor series approximation of their functional relationships. Key climate variable(s) that govern ET0 changes in each region are identified. Results indicate that at annual scale solar radiation and relative humidity govern ET0 changes in regions located in south and north‐east India, whereas wind speed followed by relative humidity mostly influence the ET0 changes over other regions. Existence of evaporation paradox in four regions and validity of Bouchet's complementary relationship between ET0, actual evapotranspiration (ETa), and precipitation in 11 regions is also established. Climate change is defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as "a change in the state of the climate that can be identified (e.g., using statistical tests) by changes in the mean and/or the variability of its properties, and that persists for an extended period, typically decades or longer"1. Climate change encompasses more than a worldwide trend of rising temperatures or 'global warming,' to include changes in regional climate characteristics such as humidity, rainfall and wind, and an observed increase in the frequency of extreme weather events, which will have biophysical, social, and economic impacts.2 However, climate change is not a figment of imagination of a distant future. Today, we are faced with rising sea levels, extreme temperatures, and more frequent and intense hydro-meteorological hazards that are already taking their toll on cultural heritage. Unfortunately, the scenarios presented by climate scientists are rather gloomy and the extent of impact on cultural heritage is likely to further accelerate exponentially. Using various case examples, this paper will explain how climate change is creating environmental conditions that are increasing the vulnerability of cultural heritage to various hazards, thereby exposing it to various risks. While there is a definite need to continue undertaking further research through a collection of highly calibrated data and sophisticated modelling for developing probable climate change induced scenarios for the future, it is equally important to invest in translating our progressively enhanced understanding of climate change risks into simple, achievable practices for dayto- day management of cultural heritage. These would include various preventive conservation techniques, enhanced monitoring systems, and adaptation strategies. Equally important is to rediscover and adapt traditional knowledge that has evolved over time in response to changing constraints and opportunities. Summary: This paper is concerned with innovative approaches to renewable energy sources computation methodologies, which provide more refined results than the classical alternatives. Such refinements provide additional improvements especially for replacement of fossil energy usages that emit greenhouse gas (GHG) into the atmosphere leading to climate change impact. Current knowledge gap among each renewable energy source calculation is rather missing fundamentals of plausible, rational, and logical explanations for the interpretation of results. In the literature, there are rather complicated and mechanically applicable methodologies, which require input and output measurement data match with missing physical explanations. The view taken in this review paper is to concentrate on quite plausible, logical, rational, and effectively applicable innovative energy calculation methodologies with simplistic fundamentals. For this purpose, a set of renewable energy methodological approaches is revisited with their innovative structures concerning solar, wind, hydro, current, and geothermal energy resources. With the increase in the renewable energy utilizations to combat the undesirable impacts of global warming and climate change, there is a need for better models that will include physical environmental conditions and data properties in the probabilistic, statistical, stochastic, logical, and rational senses leading to refined and more reliable estimations with application examples in the text. This paper provides an assessment of long-term trends in total cloud cover in the Arctic for the period 1985-2020 based on surface observations. Analysis shows that total cloud cover exhibits a substantial variation both between seasons and from year to year. Two areas of positive trends were found in the total cloud cover from October to April over the Arctic: one in the North Atlantic from 20° W up to 90° E and another from 150° E up to 150° W, which may be a result of atmospheric heat and moisture transport through the Atlantic and Pacific gates. Throughout the year, positive trends dominate over the Arctic Ocean and its seas (except for the Laptev Sea). Negative trends prevail over the continental parts of the Arctic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Significant changes in climate variables in the last decades resulted in changes of perceived climate conditions. However, there are only few studies discussing long-lasting changes in bioclimatic conditions. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to present the temporal and spatial distribution of hazardous heat and cold stress conditions in different regions of Poland. Its focus is on long-lasting changes in such conditions in the period 1951–2018. To assess changes in hazardous thermal stress conditions, the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) was used. UTCI values at 12 UTC hour (respectively 1 pm winter time, 2 pm summer time) were calculated daily based on air temperature, relative humidity, total cloud cover and wind speed at 24 stations representing the whole area of Poland. We found that the greatest changes were observed in minimum (1.33 °C/10 years) and average (0.52 °C/10 years) UTCI values as well as in cold stress frequency (− 4.00 days per 10 years). The changes vary seasonally and regionally. The greatest increase in UTCImin and decrease in cold stress days were noted from November to March and had the highest values in north-east and east Poland, and also in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. The trends in maximum UTCI are much smaller and not always positive. The spatially averaged trend in UTCImax for Poland as a whole was 0.35 °C/10 years and the increase in heat stress days was 0.80 days/10 years. Present paper provides information on the impact of climate changes on diurnal rhythms of the four passerines viz, house sparrow (Passer domesticus Linn.), rosy starling (Pastor roseus Linn.), tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor Hirun.), and brown shrike (Lanius cristatus Linn.) for two years period in the four major agricultural habitats viz. Faisalabad, Sheikhupura, Toba Tek Singh and Khanewal of Central Punjab, Pakistan. Effects of climate catastrophe have been seriously recognized as important inhibitory factors for birds' sustainable existence and conservation. Among the four habitats, present within 120 kilometre radius from Faisalabad district, observations were conducted weekly on active and passive foraging, and the roost exits and returns throughout the day. Weather changes viz. temperature, precipitation and relative humidity were critically recorded. Impacts of temperature were significant and resulted in decline of the active foraging for the four designated birds (ß= -2.36, -1.93,-2.15 and -1.64) whereas, precipitation due to its lowered frequency, exerted negative influence on the house sparrow and brown shrike, but was non-significant for rosy starling and tree swallows. Overall, temperature and relative humidity (RH) were the foremost climate factors and largely reduced the foraging and roosting movements of the four passerine birds'. Since the late 1970s, East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) has shown a significant weakening trend, and sustained drought has occurred across North China. Placing recent climate changes in the paleoclimatic context can better understand the EASM variations. Four δ18O sequences based on tree-ring cellulose of Chinese pine were developed from Mt. Beiwudang, North China, covering a period from 1700 to 2013. Based on a climatic response analysis, a transfer function was designed to reconstruct the relative humidity from July to August (RHJA hereafter). The RHJA spans from 1765 to 2013 and explains 49% (R2adj= 48%) of the instrumental variance during the calibration period (1961–2013, r = − 0.70, p < 0.0001). The RHJA is mainly influenced by precipitation in the summer rainy season and reflect EASM variations. Spatial representation analysis indicates that RHJA represents the dry/wet variations across North China. At the interannual scale, RHJA records many extreme dry/wet events, among which the events in 1876–1878, 1900, and the 1920s are extensive droughts. Those events correspond well to ENSO events, plus further correlation and periodicity analysis indicate that RHJA contains ENSO signals. At the interdecadal scale, RHJA shows a decreasing trend and unprecedented low values from 1981 to 2013, suggesting that the weakening of EASM since the late 1970s is unprecedented in the past 249 years. Similarly, the significantly correlating region in the spatial correlation analysis, covering the Meiyu/Baiu/Changma rainfall belt and India, have also undergone a climatic shift since the late 1970s according to previous papers. The northern edge of the East Asian monsoon region is also a transition zone of temperate continental and monsoon climate, which is a sensitive zone of global climate and ecological environment change. It is an urgent problem to find out the long-term climate change rules of this region. Using 101 tree core samples obtained from 54 trees, a 343-year tree-ring width chronology of the Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco (1673–2016) in the Wula Mountains, Inner Mongolia, China was established. The analysis shows that the radial growth of P. orientalis is closely related to hydrothermal conditions, the average minimum temperature and relative humidity are the main factors that determine the growth of P. orientalis. Based on the strong correlation between the tree-ring indices and the annual average minimum temperature (r = −0.870, p < 0.001), we reconstructed an average annual minimum temperature series from 1673 to 2016 using a linear regression equation, and the reconstructed equation can explain 75.724% of the variance, respectively. According to the data from the past 343 years, the changes in the annual average minimum temperature series had the cycles of 58.6-, 7.7-, 3.4-, 3.1-, 2.2-, and 2.1-years; the series showed three warm periods (1824–1830, 1909–1922, and 1986–2011) and 4 cold periods (1703–1712, 1731–1738, 1754–1763, and 1937–1951). The low temperature periods recorded in the reconstructed series for the 17th and 18th centuries are consistent with the Little Ice Age that occurred in the northern hemisphere, and the heating rate significantly increased at the end of the 20th century. In addition, the cold and warm periods recorded by the reconstruction result is basically consistent with the extreme climate events recorded in the historical documents of the region and the reconstruction results in other regions. In this paper, the world's first chronology of P. orientalis tree ring width was established. A historical sequence of annual average minimum temperature of 343 years was reconstructed in a typical region of the East Asian monsoon climate. It fills in the blank of reconstruction sequence and variation characteristics of mean minimum temperature in the northern edge of East Asian monsoon and transition zone of temperate continental and monsoon climate in recent four centuries. Climate change has acquired a status of a global issue in the second half of the 20th century, nowadays becoming more and more prominent. The negative effects of climate change as manifested through natural disasters are noticeable the most in forest stands and forest ecosystems. This study covers the period from 2008 to 2017, and the data included was collected from official statistical reports. The data on the following categories was collected: average annual air temperature, average annual precipitation, average annual relative air humidity, the number of disaster events, such as insect activity, plant diseases, wildfires, or climate and geological disasters, causing damage in state forests, and the scope of such damage. The aim of this paper is to analyze the said data and to use the results to determine the influence of observed climatic elements on the incidence of damage, the scope of damage, and the damage per one disaster event in Serbian state forests. This paper is significant because it represents a pioneering attempt to synthesize the influence of temperature, precipitation, and humidity on the incidence and scope of damage in state forests resulting from insect activity, plant diseases, geophysical events, and wildfires in Serbia (excluding the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija). By analyzing the climate records of Kunming from 1957 to 2016, Kunming’s average temperature has been found to be increasing in recent 65 years. The key problem lies in the temperature rise in recent 10 or more years by 0.4 ℃/10 a and the annual range decrease at the same time, represented as the elevation of the lowest temperature and increasingly warmer winter in Kunming. With the warming climate, the precipitation has suffered a prominent fall, by 18.05 mm/a in the past 14 years. The relative humidity is in direct proportion to the precipitation, which explains less water and drier climate in Kunming. With "One increase and two decreases" of the three key climate indexes changes in Kunming in the past 65 years, this paper analyzed the necessity and general situation of the sponge city construction in the city, proposed the overall planning of sponge city construction at the macro level, selected the sponge technology based on the urban construction land types, and planned the regulation facilities based on the catchment area and green space structure. Climate changes that have taken place in recent years in our country have led to the desertification of arable land due to another phenomenon, namely the lack of irrigation systems, where the establishment of cereal crops has become an important issue to be debated. The smaller grain yields per unit area make them no longer profitable for farmers, and the land remains uncultivated and subjected to the aridity process. In the present paper it was presented the importance of knowing the germination period of some seeds grown in these dried areas, where the drying period after germination is induced by their resistance to drought and how many germinable grains remain viable. Abstract Over the past few decades, climate change has become a significant problem, the ramifications of which are of concern around the world. Global warming is a long-term process caused by phenomena such as increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO 2) concentration in the atmosphere, increases in rainfall, changes in relative humidity and changes in temperature. Thus, this will aggravate the degradation process of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, leading to the decrease of durability, safety and serviceability. Regarding the durability of concrete structures, carbonation-induced corrosion is definitely a significant and costly source of degradation, directly related to climatic parameters such as CO 2 , temperature and relative humidity. In Paraguay, the lack of control during the construction of buildings often leads to weak structures highly vulnerable to the attack of harmful external agents. Therefore, this paper seeks to provide an analysis of the correlation between real degradation data and a numerical carbonation model for concrete structures in the country. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, climatic parameters will increase in the future. For this reason, an analysis of the decreasing performance of these structures caused by climate change will be addressed in this paper. This research aims to choose the most accurate mathematical model that can be applied in Paraguay for the prediction of the service life of concrete structures subjected to carbonation-induced corrosion. For that purpose, parameters and variables of the selected model have been defined and subsequently validated through carbonation tests results carried out in a set of RC structures built in the country. Abstract: This paper estimates the effects of humidity and temperature on mortality rates in the United States (c. 1973–2002) in order to provide an insight into the potential health impacts of climate change. I find that humidity, like temperature, is an important determinant of mortality. Coupled with Hadley CM3 climate-change predictions, I project that mortality rates are likely to change little on the aggregate for the United States. However, distributional impacts matter: mortality rates are likely to decline in cold and dry areas, but increase in hot and humid areas. At present, air conditioning (AC) is the most effective means for the cooling of indoor space. However, its increased global use is problematic for various reasons. This paper explores the challenges linked to increased AC use and discusses more sustainable alternatives. A literature review was conducted applying a transdisciplinary approach. It was further complemented by examples from cities in hot climates. To analyse the findings, an analytical framework was developed which considers four societal levels—individual, community, city, and national. The main challenges identified from the literature review are as follows: environmental, organisational, socio-economical, biophysical and behavioural. The paper also identifies several measures that could be taken to reduce the fast growth of AC use. However, due to the complex nature of the problem, there is no single solution to provide sustainable cooling. Alternative solutions were categorised in three broad categories: climate-sensitive urban planning and building design, alternative cooling technologies, and climate-sensitive attitudes and behaviour. The main findings concern the problems arising from leaving the responsibility to come up with cooling solutions entirely to the individual, and how different societal levels can work towards more sustainable cooling options. The paper deals with the use of thermography to assess landslide risk. Landslide is a natural process which affects soil. In specific conditions, it can even become cause of death and damages to buildings and structures. Due to climate changes, landslide events have increased in the last years. Sensor networks are today widely used to monitor landslide triggering events. Main problems concern the development costs of such networks, so today attention is principally focused on the use of measurement systems which allow to monitor wide zones at distance. Recently researchers are considering the use of infrared thermography as a promising tool for monitoring landslide process. The paper aims to describe the current potentialities of thermography and its limitations. Several issues and open problems are still to be faced before considering such technique as an effective monitoring tool. For this reason, the author reports the results of a measurement campaign to prove the strengths and weakness of the methodology. The urban heat island (UHI) is a phenomenon whereby temperature levels in urban areas are higher than in surrounding rural settings. Urban heat islands are a matter of increasing concern, since they can affect communities by exacerbating air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions (due to the greater use of air conditioning) and the occurrence of heat-related illness, and may lead to higher levels of mortality. This paper provides a description of the phenomena of (UHI) and an analysis of how cities are vulnerable to it. It highlights the need for resilience and the variety of means by which the UHI can be tackled. It describes a set of trends in two regions in Germany and Australia, which illustrate the scope of the problem in the northern and southern hemispheres, and the scale of vulnerability. Then, existing UHI vulnerability assessments are analysed to highlight common features and differences. Based on this, we propose a classification of adaptability parameters to support vulnerability assessments. The paper also discusses current mitigation approaches mentioned in the literature, and how these address some vulnerabilities. It concludes that both a better understanding of the UHI phenomena and consideration of the particular context of each city is needed to make urban areas more resilient to UHI. Collections care in temperate zones of the world, including Scotland, is generally well served by a system of heating control known as conservation heating or humidistat-controlled heating. This system adjusts temperature in a building in order to maintain relative humidity at desired levels. An alternative control method is through the use of dehumidification, although airtightness of the building influences the effectiveness of this. This paper assesses three sites where these methods of control have been used: the Great Hall at Edinburgh Castle, Abbots House at Arbroath Abbey in eastern Scotland and Skelmorlie Aisle in western Scotland. Long‐term climate monitoring by universities provides fundamental data for various disciplines in the natural sciences. Kyoto University once managed 10 university forest stations and is currently managing five. At these stations, climate data have been monitored almost since the establishment of each station until today, with the exception of the stations in foreign countries. We compiled and report the monthly climate data at these forest stations from the start of monitoring until December 2018. These data are important for investigating environmental changes in East Asia, including China (Taiwan), South Korea (Chosen) and Russia (Sakhalin, Karafuto) over the last 100 years. Long‐term monitoring often involves minor and major changes in the monitoring procedures, devices and even monitoring sites due to unavoidable circumstances, such as technological advances, changes in standard methods and climatic and anthropogenic disasters. Therefore, associated metadata on the monitoring methods are also important. We also compiled metadata on changes in monitoring methods. In addition, to examine the effects of changes in the methods on the observed climate data, we compared the values recorded before and after the change for each climate variable at each monitoring site. Methodological changes affected only a few variables, with the exception of humidity. Careful interpretation may be required when a researcher uses humidity data in any analysis. Schizophrenia is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder with heterogeneous aetiology mostly affecting younger people and causing immense disability. Seasonal patterns may be observed in schizophrenia hospital admissions with possible association with changing climatic parameters and socio-demographic characteristics. This study critically reviewed studies that have assessed seasonal variations of hospital admissions for schizophrenia and/or explored an association with climate parameters and/or other potential factors. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature search was conducted using electronic databases (e.g. MEDLINE, Science Direct, PsycINFO, Pub Med) from inception to February 29, 2020. Thirty five papers were identified, of which only six (17.1%) examined evidence for a seasonal pattern or monthly excess of hospital admissions and the remaining twenty nine (82.9%) assessed climatic and socio-demographic attributes relating to the seasonal pattern or increased hospitalisation for schizophrenia. While most studies reported a summer peak in hospital admission rates, other studies reported a winter peak. Most of the evidence indicated that higher temperatures (> 28 °C) were positively correlated with schizophrenia admission rates. The individual effects of other climatic parameters (e.g. relative humidity, rainfall, atmospheric pressure, sunlight) were less frequently assessed. Males, people of 21–60 years old, and those married were more vulnerable to climatic variability specifically to higher temperatures. Further studies using large sample sizes, analysis of a wide range of interacting environmental variables and sophisticated statistical approaches are needed to better understand the underlying mechanisms involved. The atmospheric moisture transport processes are of great importance to the occurrence and intensity of precipitation extremes. In this paper, we review the linkage between processes, including the large‐scale atmospheric circulation, atmospheric moisture transport, and extreme precipitation events. We first summarize the thermodynamic and dynamic processes and moisture transport trackings for historical precipitation extremes. We then focus on the contribution of three major atmospheric moisture transport pathways, that is, atmospheric rivers, low‐level jets, and tropical cyclones, to the occurrence and intensity of regional precipitation extremes. Studies on large‐scale atmospheric circulation driving water vapor transport for precipitation extremes over East Asia and North America were specifically reviewed for the understanding of physical mechanisms and predictability of moisture transport and extreme precipitation events. We then pay more attention to the effects of global warming on atmospheric moisture transport, and thus regional precipitation extremes from the perspectives of thermodynamic and dynamic changes of the atmosphere. In the end, we summarize future research challenges on the physical mechanisms of atmospheric moisture transport that are associated with regional precipitation extremes, especially under a warming climate. This paper aims to investigate the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of the potential evapotranspiration (ET0) and its response to climate change using the collected data from the daily weather observation of 23 meteorological stations in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region for 57 years from 1960-2016. The specific parameters of dataset included the daily average air temperature, the maximum and minimum air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and sunshine hours. We chose the Penman-Monteith formula to calculate the daily ET0 at each site, and then analyzed the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of the calculated ET0. A sensitivity coefficient was used to quantitatively study the sensitivity of ET0 to various meteorological elements and its spatial and temporal distribution. The contribution rate was set to evaluate the influence of meteorological elements changes on the variation of ET0 during the calculation. The results show that: 1) The spatial distribution of ET0 shows a decreasing trend from south to north across the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, except a high ET0 in the central region, such as Tanggu, Huangye and Baoding stations. There was a linear decline rate of -0.92mm /a. e in the whole distribution of ET0. The spatial distribution of ET0 MK (Penman-Monteith) decreased from the northwest to southeast. In temporal characteristics, spring has the most obvious decrease, followed by autumn, summer, and winter. 2) The sensitivity coefficient of ET0 to the average air temperature, sunshine hours, relative humidity and wind speed are 0.26, 0.28, 0.31 and -044, respectively, indicating the most sensitive to the changes of relative humidity in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, followed by the wind speed and sunshine hours. The sensitivity coefficient of ET0 to meteorological elements presents in a fluctuating trend from1960-2016, the sensitivity coefficient of ET0 to the wind speed and relative humidity in a downward trend, while the sensitivity coefficient of ET0 to average temperature and sunshine hours in an upward trend. The spatial distribution of the sensitivity coefficient from northwest to southeast: the wind speed and average temperature gradually increased, while the sunshine hours and relative humidity gradually decreased. The spatial distribution characteristics of the sensitivity coefficient of ET0 to relative humidity and average temperature were the opposite situation, where the high sensitivity zone of average temperature belongs to the low sensitive zone of relative humidity. The opposite phenomenon also occurred in the spatial distribution characteristics of the sensitivity coefficient of ET0 to sunshine hours and wind speed sensitivity, i.e., the high sensitivity zone of sunshine hours belongs to the low sensitive zone of wind speed. 3) The contribution rate of meteorological elements to ET0 depends on the sensitivity coefficient and the relative change of meteorological elements. ET0 has the most sensitivity to the changes of relative humidity, but the change rate of the relative humidity was small. ET0 has the lower sensitive to the changes of wind speed, but the change rate of the wind speed was large, resulting the most contribution to ET0 in the whole region was the wind speed. However, the stations number of the wind speed as the dominant factor decreased with the measure time, whereas the stations number of the average temperature as the dominant factor increased with the measure time, especially in the period of 2010—2014 to 2010s, 12 stations with the average temperature as the dominant factor. The stations number of the sunshine hours as the dominant factor also increased with the measured time. It infers that the average temperature and sunshine hours have much significant influences on ET0 in recent years. From 2013 to 2016, the correlation coefficients of the winter average air temperature, sunshine hours, relative humidity, wind speed and PM2.5 concentration were -0.44, -0.53, 0.42 and -0.35, respectively, while the correlation coefficients of ET0 and PM2.5 concentration were -0.37. Therefore, it is possible that the haze, especially winter haze, has a certain impact on meteorological elements, and thereby on ET0 in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the results of a trend analysis of three climate elements: precipitation, cloudiness and humidity. Almost the entire period of instrumental measurements (precipitation and humidity) and visual observations (cloudiness) are covered. In the observed 68-year period (1951-2018), the trend of annual and seasonal precipitation amounts is insignificant. Though, there is a significant decrease in the number of days with precipitation = 1 mm, which implies a movement towards more arid conditions. On the other hand, the number of days with extreme rainfall = 40 and 50 mm is increasing. In Podgorica, the annual statistics of days with snow cover decreases as well. There is also a decrease in the relative humidity and cloudiness, and with both elements the trend is insignificant only in the autumn season. The results of the trend calculation show that the number of gloomy days is more intensively reduced than the number of increasing bright days. In general, the results of the research show that the climate of Podgorica tends to be more arid with more extreme weather events. The climate variations happening in this city are, to small amount, caused by the urbanization process. Podgorica has the character of an urban heat island in a cooler environment, with an average annual intensity of about 0.7°C and the highest in winter (about 0.8°C). The most symptomatic indicator of urbanization is temperature, but anthropogenic heat production in the city (asphalt, constructions, increase of aerosols, etc.) also affects other climate elements. Compared to the non-urban environment, Podgorica has a higher annual rainfall of 100 mm and a lower humidity of 3%, while this difference is not noticeable in the overall cloudiness. Drought has become a problem that is universally faced by global terrestrial ecosystems. Northeast China is dominated by a temperate monsoon climate and located in an area sensitive to global climate changes, and one of the main impacts of climate changes in Northeast China is manifested as drought in growing seasons. The drought area has a gradual increase trend, and drought has become the main agro-meteorological disaster in this region which is also the main maize planting area in China. Drought normalization seriously restricts the stable development of maize production in Northeast China. So in this paper, we took spring maize in Liaoning Province as an example and made clear the drought variation characteristics in different growth stages by using the data of MODIS, FY-3A, relative soil moisture and growth stages and the methods of RS, GIS and statistical analysis. Then we analyzed the correlation between multi-time scale remote sensing indexes and relative soil moisture in different soil depth, and established the remote sensing monitoring index set and models of relative soil moisture for each growth stage and soil depth. The accuracy of the monitoring models was verified and the application research of monitoring the drought of spring maize in Liaoning Province was studied. The results showed that: From 1993 to 2012, drought occurred in each growth stage of spring maize in Liaoning Province and the highly frequent drought occurred in the period from 1999 to 2002. The drought grade in each year was mainly light drought, and the drought was the most serious at milk stage, followed by heading stage. There was no significant correlation between the monitoring indexes and relative soil moisture at sowing and emergence stage, but there was a significant or extremely significant correlation between them at three-leaf and maturity stage. The monitoring index LSWI (land surface water index) had a strong ability to monitor relative soil moisture, followed by WI (water index). Multi-index coordination could improve the monitoring ability of relative soil moisture by remote sensing means, and the monitoring ability at 10-day scale was generally higher than that at 5-day scale and 20-day scale. Based on the monitoring models of soil relative humidity, the drought condition of partial growth stages and soil depth from 2001 to 2004 was monitored. The overall monitoring accuracy was 73.32%, in which the monitoring accuracy of jointing and three-leaf stage was more than 85%. The dynamic monitoring of drought grades in different growth stages in 2000 was realized. The monitoring results were consistent with the agro-meteorological observation records in terms of the growth stages and space. This paper utilized the coupled humid-mechanical-damage model to investigate the influence of environmental humidity change on the deformation and stability of Cave 4 and Cave 5 in Longyou Grottoes. It is found that the change in environmental humidity significantly influences the stability of caves in Longyou Grottoes. The water saturation of surrounding rock changes with the increase or decrease of ambient humidity. The water swelling and dry shrinkage processes greatly affect the stress state and mechanical properties of the surrounding rock, resulting in micro-cracks which may form fractures that disturb the structural integrity and aggravate the geological hazard of weathering. The cave roof is the most dangerous position during the humidity variation. Pre-existing fissures act as shortcuts for humidity diffusion and stress generation. In turn, the fast diffusion rate and high stress cause further propagation of the fissures. Repairing pre-existing fissures and applying waterproof measurements on the inner wall of caves contributes to the stability and durability of the grottoes. This study improves the understanding of the relationship between the changes in environmental humidity and the weathering of grottoes and provides theoretical support for the subsequent disaster risk management and preservation of Longyou Grottoes. Downward longwave radiation (DLR) is often assumed to be an independent forcing on the surface energy budget in analyses of Arctic warming and land‐atmosphere interaction. We use radiative kernels to show that the DLR response to forcing is largely determined by surface temperature perturbations. We develop a method by which vertically integrated versions of the radiative kernels are combined with surface temperature and specific humidity to estimate the surface DLR response to greenhouse forcing. Through a decomposition of the DLR response, we estimate that changes in surface temperature produce at least 63% of the clear‐sky DLR response in greenhouse forcing, while the changes associated with clouds account for only 11% of the full‐sky DLR response. Our results suggest that surface DLR is tightly coupled to surface temperature; therefore, it cannot be considered an independent component of the surface energy budget. Plain Language Summary: Longwave radiation, often referred to as "thermal" or "infrared" radiation, emitted downward by Earth's atmosphere is a primary contributor to the surface energy budget. Numerous studies have invoked longwave radiation as a driver of surface warming. This paper shows that this line of reasoning fails to account for the strong control surface temperature exerts on longwave radiation. Using radiative kernels, matrices that quantify the longwave radiation response to a climate perturbation (like global warming), we argue that any surface temperature anomaly will generate a downward longwave radiation response. This constitutes a feedback between the Earth's surface and its atmosphere. The kernels show large longwave responses to perturbations in the lowest part of the atmosphere and almost no response to perturbations at high levels; by vertically integrating the kernels, we can ignore the vertical structure of climate perturbations. Using this modification, we predict the longwave radiation response to a warming world using only the surface changes. Our prediction agrees with climate model output, suggesting that the longwave radiation response is determined primarily by surface temperature. Further, the cloud contribution to changes in longwave radiation is small. These results provide clarity on how changes in the surface energy budget should be analyzed. The article presents the biometeorological impact of thermal and humidity conditions on the human body in the Hornsund area in the southern Spitsbergen, Svalbard. This was determined based on diurnal air temperature range, the day-to-day variation in average diurnal air temperature and the average diurnal relative humidity. The temporal variability of thermal and humidity biometeorological stimuli in Hornsund was examined for the period 01.11.1978-31.12.2017. A lessening of biometeorological impact was found in the southern Spitsbergen region, including a statistically significant negative trend in strongly- and severely-felt stimuli (according to diurnal air temperature range), and in significant and severe stimuli (according to day-to-day variation in average diurnal air temperature). A non-significant positive trend was observed in the number of days of relative humidity with humid and very humid air. To analyse the spatial variability of the stimuli around the Hornsund fjord, data were used from seven year-round measuring stations for the period 01.07.2014-31.06.2015. The most unfavourable conditions were found on the Hans Glacier, on the summit of Fugleberget and inside the fjord. The paper presents the role of atmospheric circulation on thermal and humidity stimuli. In the Hornsund region, the highest probability of unfavourable sensible temperatures for humans occurring during the year was mostly in winter and early spring. This was related to the advection of air masses from the north-east sector, regardless of baric regime type. It was found that very humid air (> 85%) flowed over Hornsund for practically the entire year from the S-SW as part of both cyclonic and anti-cyclonic systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shading and insect-proof screens are widely used in agriculture for passive microclimate control and for insect exclusion. It is an efficient tool for crop production in adverse climatic and environmental condition. As screens are made of a porous material, the protected environment usually interacts with the outside and hence screens provide only moderate microclimatic modifications. Nevertheless, such modifications might be crucial for certain horticultural processes, thus may strongly influence production and quality. Depending on the type of screen, structure configuration, crop and climatic region, recent studies have shown that compared to open field conditions, screens reduce solar radiation and air velocity by about 15–39% and 50–87%, respectively; increase air relative humidity by 2–21%; decrease air temperature and evapotranspiration by 2.3–2.5 °C and 17.4–50% respectively. This paper seeks to review recent advances regarding effects of such screens on microclimate, crop water use and production. Therefore, the ultimate objective of this review is to assist both researchers and growers. For researchers the review provides up-to-date information of the recent studies as well as knowledge gaps that call for future research. Abstract Relative humidity (RH) is one of the most important parameters in the study of fog-haze. This paper first estimates the contributions of the key quantities (temperature, water vapor, air pollutant) and their combinations to the relative change of RH , and then investigates the relationships of RH with the long-term variation of haze and fog days based on the meteorological data in the Yangtze River Delta over the period 1970–2010. The main conclusions are as follows. (1) Temperature is the foremost factor influencing RH , with the effect of specific humidity and direct contribution of air pollutant being second and third. (2) RH shows a prominent descending trend in the Yangtze River Delta, due to global warming and the 'analogous heat island effect' (AHIE). (3) Decreasing RH was responsible for the reduction of fog days. The AHIE can explain the phenomenon in which fog days in metropolises are less than in small cities. (4) Granger causality analysis of inter-annual variation further shows that increasing aerosol loading Ganger-causes the increasing haze days, rather than meteorological parameters such as RH. High RH would enhance hygroscopic growth of particle and then suppress the planet boundary layer height (PBLH) and lead to more haze days, lower PBLH further increases aerosols and RH , this positive feedback mechanism can be established under the condition of aerosol loading being relatively stable and beyond the threshold for haze formation. (5) If aerosol emissions maintain the status quo, climate cooling would result in serious fog-haze events occurring more frequently in Yangtze River Delta. The research provide a scientific basis for understanding the influence of meteorological factors on RH and the connection between the variation of long term fog-haze days and RH under the background of climate change. Wood decomposition is a major component of the global carbon cycle. Decomposition rates vary across climate gradients, which is thought to reflect the effects of temperature and moisture on the metabolic kinetics of decomposers. However, decomposition rates also vary with wood traits, which may reflect the influence of stoichiometry on decomposer metabolism as well as geometry relating the surface areas that decomposers colonize with the volumes they consume. In this paper, we combined metabolic and geometric scaling theories to formalize hypotheses regarding the drivers of wood decomposition rates, and assessed these hypotheses using a global compilation of data on climate, wood traits, and wood decomposition rates. Our results are consistent with predictions from both metabolic and geometric scaling theories. Approximately half of the global variation in decomposition rates was explained by wood traits (nitrogen content and diameter), whereas only a fifth was explained by climate variables (air temperature, precipitation, and relative humidity). These results indicate that global variation in wood decomposition rates is best explained by stoichiometric and geometric wood traits. Our findings suggest that inclusion of wood traits in global carbon cycle models can improve predictions of carbon fluxes from wood decomposition. The design of reclamation soil covers at oil sands mines in northern Alberta, Canada, has been conventionally based on the calibration of soil–vegetation–atmosphere transfer (SVAT) models against field monitoring observations collected over several years, followed by simulations of long-term performance using historical climate data. This paper evaluates the long-term water balances for reclamation covers on two oil sands landforms and three natural coarse-textured forest soil profiles using both historical climate data and future climate projections. Twenty-first century daily precipitation and temperature data from CanESM2 were downscaled based on three representative concentration pathways (RCPs) employing a stochastic weather generator [Long Ashton Research Station Weather Generator (LARS-WG)]. Relative humidity, wind speed, and net radiation were downscaled using the delta change method. Downscaled precipitation and estimated potential evapotranspiration were used as inputs to simulate soil water dynamics using physically based models. Probability distributions of growing season (April–October) actual evapotranspiration (AET) and net percolation (NP) for the baseline and future periods show that AET and NP at all sites are expected to increase throughout the twenty-first century regardless of RCP, time period, and soil profile. Greater increases in AET and NP are projected toward the end of the twenty-first century. The increases in future NP at the two reclamation covers are larger (as a percentage increase) than at most of the natural sites. Increases in NP will result in greater water yield to surface water and may accelerate the rate at which chemical constituents contained within mine waste are released to downstream receptors, suggesting these potential changes need to be considered in mine closure designs. There are two aims of this paper: First, the relationship between daily and hourly precipitation extremes and air temperature is investigated for the validity of Clausius–Clapeyron (C–C) scaling; second, the impact of the atmospheric circulation and transport of humidity on the extreme precipitation events occurrence in Poland is analysed based on data obtained from 26 stations across Poland in the period 1951–2015. It was shown that daily‐scale extreme rainfall is less sensitive to changes in local atmospheric temperature but the hourly intensities reveal a similar behaviour at all stations showing a robust signal over the entire country. Regarding the impact of the large‐scale atmospheric circulation, three types were distinguished in cool part of the year: one connected with the positive phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), second with a low‐pressure zone in the north and high‐pressure in the south of Europe and the northern Atlantic and third with a low over central Europe. Each time high precipitation in Poland was connected with the advection of humid air from the western sectors (SW, W or NW). In the warm part of the year three types were distinguished too, Poland was always in the scope of low‐pressure systems with the advection of warm air from the southern sectors or when the warm air from the south meets the colder air from the north. Similar localizations of low centres have been found in the case of local‐scale atmospheric circulation types during events with extreme precipitation. Both in cool and warm part of the year such events are connected with the increase of water vapour in the air. Climatic indices complexly display the climate of a place, and certainly influence its more qualitative characterization. In this paper, the specificity of the climate is analyzed, such as the degree of continentality and aridity, in the example of the city of Podgorica. The climate was considered on the basis of the data for almost the entire instrument period (1951-2017). The results obtained for thermal continentality show that maritime influences are primary and predominant, but the influence of the continent is also significant. In a hygric sense, the climate of Podgorica is characterized as poorly arid to poorly humid with significant oscillations during the year. The warmer period of the year, especially the summer, has the characteristics of arid climate. The colder period of the year, especially from November to February, has the characteristics of humid and even perhumidic climate, while the transitional seasons show signs of semi-aridity and semi-humidity. China’s FengYun 3 (FY-3) polar orbiting satellites are set to become an important source of observational data for numerical weather prediction (NWP), atmospheric reanalyses, and climate monitoring studies over the next two decades. As part of the Climate Science for Service Partnership China (CSSP China) program, FY-3B Microwave Humidity Sounder 1 (MWHS-1) and FY-3C MWHS-2 observations have been thoroughly assessed and prepared for operational assimilation. This represents the first time observations from China’s polar orbiting satellites have been used in the UK’s global NWP model. Since 2016, continuous data quality monitoring has shown occasional bias changes found to be correlated to changes in the energy supply scheme regulating the platform heating system and other transient anomalies. Nonetheless, MWHS-1 and MWHS-2 significantly contribute to the 24-h forecast error reduction by 0.3% and 0.6%, respectively, and the combination of both instruments is shown to improve the fit to the model background of independent sounders by up to 1%. The observations from the Microwave Radiation Imager (MWRI) also are a potentially significant source of benefits for NWP models, but a solar-dependent bias observed in the instrument half-orbits has prevented their assimilation. To address the problems and limitations identified through a comprehensive evaluation in Part I paper, several modifications are made in model inputs, treatments, and configurations and sensitivity simulations with improved model inputs and treatments are performed in this Part II paper. The use of reinitialization of meteorological variables reduces the biases and increases the spatial correlations in simulated temperature at 2-m (T2), specific humidity at 2-m (Q2), wind speed at 10-m (WS10), and precipitation (Precip). The use of a revised surface drag parameterization further reduces the biases in simulated WS10. The adjustment of only the magnitudes of anthropogenic emissions in the surface layer does not help improve overall model performance, whereas the adjustment of both the magnitudes and vertical distributions of anthropogenic emissions shows moderate to large improvement in simulated surface concentrations and column mass abundances of species in terms of domain mean performance statistics, hourly and monthly mean concentrations, and vertical profiles of concentrations at individual sites. The revised and more advanced dust emission schemes can help improve PM predictions. Using revised upper boundary conditions for O 3 significantly improves the column O 3 abundances. Using a simple SOA formation module further improves the predictions of organic carbon and PM 2.5 . The sensitivity simulation that combines all above model improvements greatly improves the overall model performance. For example, the sensitivity simulation gives the normalized mean biases (NMBs) of −6.1% to 23.8% for T2, 2.7–13.8% for Q2, 22.5–47.6% for WS10, and −9.1% to 15.6% for Precip, comparing to −9.8% to 75.6% for T2, 0.4–23.4% for Q2, 66.5–101.0% for WS10, and 11.4%–92.7% for Precip from the original simulation without those improvements. It also gives the NMBs for surface predictions of −68.2% to −3.7% for SO 2 , −73.8% to −20.6% for NO 2 , −8.8%–128.7% for O 3 , −61.4% to −26.5% for PM 2.5 , and −64.0% to 7.2% for PM 10 , comparing to −84.2% to −44.5% for SO 2 , −88.1% to −44.0% for NO 2 , −11.0%–160.3% for O 3 , −63.9% to −25.2% for PM 2.5 , and −68.9%–33.3% for PM 10 from the original simulation. The improved WRF/Chem is applied to estimate the impact of anthropogenic aerosols on regional climate and air quality in East Asia. Anthropogenic aerosols can increase cloud condensation nuclei, aerosol optical depth, cloud droplet number concentrations, and cloud optical depth. They can decrease surface net radiation, temperature at 2-m, wind speed at 10-m, planetary boundary layer height, and precipitation through various direct and indirect effects. The paper introduces a novel method for risk assessment and preventive conservation of organic hygroscopic cultural heritage objects. The method is based on the analysis of the historic climate that is established in the European Standard EN 15757:2010. This new approach enables interpreting visible damage and assessing cause–effect relationships and it finds practical application in improving conservation strategies for real life buildings and objects. The paper investigates how it may be advantageous to reconstruct the historic climate back in time to obtain sound information about the target relative humidity (RH) level and the domain of RH fluctuations that can be considered safe for conservation. The method was applied to an inlaid wooden choir in the basilica of S. Giustina, Padua, Italy. The past indoor climate has been reconstructed over the whole life of the object, built in 1477, with documentary proxy data, instrumental readings and building simulation. Winter has been found to be the most critical season for the mechanical stress and wood yield. For the future, the indoor climate has been simulated until 2100 to timely devise preventive conservation measures to reduce the risk induced by climate change. Previous work by the same authors has shown that in mixed-humid climates, tight, super-insulated residential structures can experience high humidity events in summer months. Standard, commercially available vapor compression-based air conditioners struggle to control humidity in such structures with low cooling loads. Therefore a desiccant-assisted heat pump system for tight, super-insulated residential structures is proposed. This paper first reviews solid desiccant cooling cycles. Then a hybrid desiccant cooling cycle is explained and a prototype machine based on the cycle is described. The machine, known as HAWC (hybrid air/water conditioner), accomplishes cooling, dehumidification, ventilation, and domestic hot water heating. This paper models the HAWC within the framework of dynamic building energy modeling software and concludes that a refined version of the HAWC prototype is capable of completely eliminating high humidity events in the summer time while still saving energy as compared to a traditional HVAC system.
