Background: Climate change has altered global hydrological cycles mainly due to changes in temperature and precipitation, which may exacerbate the global and regional water shortage issues, especially in the countries along the Belt and Road (B&R). Methods: In this paper, we assessed water supply, demand, and stress under three climate change scenarios in the major countries along the Belt and Road. We ensembled ten Global Climate Model (GCM) runoff data and downscaled it to a finer resolution of 0.1 × 0.1 by the random forest model. Results: Our results showed that the GCM runoff was highly correlated with the FAO renewable water resources and thus could be used to estimate water supply. Climate change would increase water supply by 4.85%, 5.18%, 8.16% and water demand by 1.45%, 1.68%, 2.36% under RCP 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5 scenarios by 2050s, respectively. As a result, climate change will, in general, have little impact on water stress in the B&R countries as a whole. However, climate change will make future water resources more unevenly distributed among the B&R countries and regions, exacerbating water stress in some countries, especially in Central Asia and West Asia. Observed data and detection of climate and hydrologic changes are of great interest for efficient water resources management. Multiyear temperature (T), precipitation (P) and river discharge (Q) trends across Serbia are presented on an annual, seasonal and monthly basis. The data used in the paper are from 1949 to 2016. The first objective is to present observed multiyear T, P and Q trends in Serbia, on an annual, seasonal and monthly basis. The second objective is to examine how the trends vary among different periods. Three different periods are analyzed: 1949-2006 (58 years), 1959-2016 (58 years), and the entire time span from 1949 to 2016 (68 years). The paper shows the most recent results and discusses whether the earlier registered T, P and Q trends (1949-2006) on all three time scale (annual, seasonal, monthly) exhibit the same pattern or if there are any new phenomena across Serbia in the last 10 years. Additionally, seasonal and monthly trends are compared with observed annual trends. The third objective is to consider what could be expected in general with regard to Serbian river discharges in the next few decades if temperature continues to increase. The fourth objective is to compare the results of this research based only on observed changes, for which regional climate and hydrologic models (RCMs) were not used, with the results obtained for the near future by RCMs in different projects and studies. This paper assesses the effect of climate change on water availability for consumptive use for a river basin taking into account the regulation capacity of its water supply systems and a set of management standards (restrictions, demands, reliability). A specific sensitivity index to climate change defined by the relation between the unitary variation of water availability and the unitary variation of the average annual inflow is studied. The analysis is conducted by constructing climate projections taking into consideration changes only in mean annual streamflow and changes in both the mean and the coefficient of variation of the annual streamflow. The study area includes 567 basins which cover practically the entire territory of continental Spain. The results show a significant sensitivity to changes in the coefficient of variation for regulated systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents basic definitions and challenges/opportunities from different perspectives to study and control water cycle impacts on society and vice versa. The wider and increased interactions and their consequences such as global warming and climate change, and the role of complex institutional- and governance-related socioeconomic-environmental issues bring forth new challenges. Hydrology and integrated water resources management (IWRM from the viewpoint of an engineering planner) do not exclude in their scopes the study of the impact of changes in global hydrology from societal actions and their feedback effects on the local/global hydrology. However, it is useful to have unique emphasis through specialized fields such as hydrosociology (including the society in planning water projects, from the viewpoint of the humanities) and sociohydrology (recognizing the large-scale impacts society has on hydrology, from the viewpoint of science). Global hydrological models have been developed for large-scale hydrology with few parameters to calibrate at local scale, and integrated assessment models have been developed for multiple sectors including water. It is important not to do these studies with a silo mindset, as problems in water and society require highly interdisciplinary skills, but flexibility and acceptance of diverse views will progress these studies and their usefulness to society. To deal with complexities in water and society, systems modeling is likely the only practical approach and is the viewpoint of researchers using coupled human–natural systems (CHNS) models. The focus and the novelty in this paper is to clarify some of these challenges faced in CHNS modeling, such as spatiotemporal scale variations, scaling issues, institutional issues, and suggestions for appropriate mathematical tools for dealing with these issues. The Cantareira Water Production System (CWPS), which supplies water to the most populous region in Brazil, is facing significant challenges due to hydroclimate change, thus threatening its water security. This research integrates data from climate models and field observations with hydrological modeling, aimed at quantifying trends in key variables of the hydrological cycle. The GFDL-CM4 climate model, the most suitable for the study area, was employed to generate runoff data under both current conditions and future scenarios (SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5). Our analysis reveals an increasing trend in the frequency of dry hydrological years. The Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) and Drought Magnitude (DM) confirm an increase in both the occurrence and duration of droughts in future scenarios. The runoff in all basins was reduced, causing a substantial decrease in minimum flows of 16.9%, medium flows of 11.8%, and high flows of 9.2% for the SSP5-8.5 scenario. This research introduces an approach to hydroclimate impact assessment, combining rigorous data analysis with advanced modeling techniques. Our findings not only provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by the CWPS, but also offer critical quantitative insights essential for developing effective public policies and adaptive strategies for sustainable water resource management. Water and resource availability in sufficient quantity and quality for anthropogenic needs represents one of the main challenges in the coming decades. To prepare for upcoming challenges such as increased urbanization and climate change related consequences, innovative and improved resource management concepts are indispensable. In recent years we have developed and applied the urban harvest approach (UHA). The UHA aims to model and quantify the urban water cycle on different temporal and spatial scales. This approach allowed us to quantify the impact of the implementation of water saving measures and new water treatment concepts in cities. In this paper we will introduce the UHA and its application for urban water cycles. Furthermore, we will show first results for an extension to energy cycles and highlight future research items (e.g. nutrients, water-energy-nexus). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global warming intensifies the hydrological cycle by altering the rate of water fluxes to and from the terrestrial surface, resulting in an increase in extreme precipitation events and longer dry spells. Prior hydrological intensification work has largely focused on precipitation without joint consideration of evaporative demand changes and how plants respond to these changes. Informed by state‐of‐the‐art climate models, we examine projected changes in hydrological intensification and its role in complicating water resources management using a framework that accounts for precipitation surplus and evaporative demand. Using a metric that combines the difference between daily precipitation and daily evaporative demand (surplus events) and consecutive days when evaporative demand exceeds precipitation (deficit time), we show that, globally, surplus events will become larger (+11.5% and +18.5% for moderate and high emission scenarios, respectively) and the duration between them longer (+5.1%; +9.6%) by the end of the century, with the largest changes in the northern latitudes. The intra‐annual occurrence of these extremes will stress existing water management infrastructure in major river basins, where over one third of years during 2070–2100 under a moderate emissions scenario will be hydrologically intense (large intra‐annual increases in surplus intensity and deficit time), tripling that of the historical baseline. Larger increases in hydrologically intense years are found in basins with large reservoir capacity (e.g., Amazon, Congo, and Danube River Basins), which have significant populations, irrigate considerable farmland, and support threatened and endangered aquatic species. Incorporating flexibility into water resource infrastructure and management will be paramount with continued hydrological intensification. Plain Language Summary: Climate change is intensifying the hydrologic cycle, resulting in an increase in floods and droughts. These changes increase the complexity of water resource management that must balance between releasing water to reduce flood risk and storing water for long periods without precipitation. Using updated climate model projections, we show that the amount of precipitation during events will become larger combined with longer dry periods where the daily evaporative demand exceeds precipitation for much of the Earth's surface. Additionally, for the late 21st century, a large portion of the years will be hydrologically intense in major river basins, resulting in conditions that deviate from those for which infrastructure and management policies were developed. As a typical alpine marsh wetland on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Zoige Wetland plays an important role in the water source recharge of Yellow River. Meanwhile, it is more sensitive to climate change. Therefore, it is necessary to study the hydrological cycle of Zoige Wetland and the impact of climate change, which will also provide important support and reference for the study of hydrological process, and protection of wetland water resources in Alpine areas. Based on the distributed hydrological model, this paper analyzed the runoff process in the Zoige wetland basin, and explored the trend of runoff variation in the Zoige wetland basin under different climate change scenarios in the next 30 years from 2020 to 2050. The impact of climate change on wetland runoff were also discussed. Results showed that the runoff in the Zoige Wetland basin decreased under the future climate change scenario. The rate of runoff reduction was the largest in Machu station, followed by Zoige station, and finally Tangke station. The reduction in non-flooding runoff is significantly higher than that in the flood season. The runoff during non-flood season in the Zoige Wetland basin from 2020 to 2050 will decrease by more than 25% in the future climate change scenario. The sharp decline in non-flooded runoff may have an impact on the protection of the Zoige Wetland and the management of water resources in the middle reaches of the Yellow River and downstream areas. This poses more stringent requirements for the protection of the Zoige Wetland in response to future climate change. Under future climate change scenarios, how to strengthen the management and protection of wetland water resources and prevent the degradation and atrophy of wetlands is the issue we need to further discuss and consider. Exponentially growing water demands and increasingly uncertain hydrologic regimes due to changes in climate and land use are challenging the sustainability of agricultural water systems. Farmers must adapt their management strategies in order to secure food production and avoid crop failures. Investigating the potential for adaptation policies in agricultural systems requires accounting for their natural and human components, along with their reciprocal interactions. Yet this feedback is generally overlooked in the water resources systems literature. In this work, we contribute a novel modeling approach to study the coevolution of irrigated agriculture under changing climate, advancing the representation of the human component within agricultural systems by using normative meta-models to describe the behaviors of groups of farmers or institutional decisions. These behavioral models, validated against observational data, are then integrated into a coupled human-natural system simulation model to better represent both systems and their coevolution under future changing climate conditions, assuming the adoption of different policy adaptation options, such as cultivating less water demanding crops. The application to the pilot study of the Adda River basin in northern Italy shows that the dynamic coadaptation of water supply and demand allows farmers to avoid estimated potential losses of more than 10 M€/yr under projected climate changes, while unilateral adaptation of either the water supply or the demand are both demonstrated to be less effective. Results also show that the impact of the different policy options varies as function of drought intensity, with water demand adaptation outperforming water supply adaptation when drought conditions become more severe.
