Hydrological cycle is expected to become the primary cause of ecosystem's degradation in near future under changing climate. Rain manipulation experiments under field conditions provide accurate picture on the responses of biotic processes to changed water availability for plants. A field experiment, mimicking expected changes in rain patterns, was established in a Mediterranean shrub community at Porto Conte, Italy, in 2001. In November 2011 Cistus monspeliensis, one of the dominating shrub species in the Mediterranean basin, was 13 C labelled on plots subjected to extended rain shortage period and on control non manipulated plots. Carbon (C) allocation was traced by 13 C dynamics in shoots, shoot-respired CO 2 , roots, microbial biomass, K 2 SO 4 -extractable C and CO 2 respired from soil. Most of the recovered 13 C (60%) was respired by shoots within 2weeks in control plots. In rain shortage treatment, 13 C remained incorporated in aboveground plant parts. Residence time of 13 C in leaves was longer under the rain shortage because less 13 C was lost by shoot respiration and because 13 C was re-allocated to leaves from woody tissues. The belowground C sink was weak (3-4% of recovered 13 C) and independent on rain manipulation. Extended rain shortage promoted C exudation into rhizosphere soil in expense of roots. Together with lowered photosynthesis, this "save" economy of new C metabolites reduces the growing season under rain shortage resulting in decrease of shrub cover and C losses from the system on the long-term., (Copyright © 2018. Despite its fundamental role for carbon (C) and nutrient cycling, rhizodeposition remains 'the hidden half of the hidden half': it is highly dynamic and rhizodeposits are rapidly incorporated into microorganisms, soil organic matter, and decomposed to CO2. Therefore, rhizodeposition is rarely quantified and remains the most uncertain part of the soil C cycle and of C fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems. This review synthesizes and generalizes the literature on C inputs by rhizodeposition under crops and grasslands (281 data sets). The allocation dynamics of assimilated C (after 13C- CO2 or 14C- CO2 labeling of plants) were quantified within shoots, shoot respiration, roots, net rhizodeposition (i.e., C remaining in soil for longer periods), root-derived CO2, and microorganisms. Partitioning of C pools and fluxes were used to extrapolate belowground C inputs via rhizodeposition to ecosystem level. Allocation from shoots to roots reaches a maximum within the first day after C assimilation. Annual crops retained more C (45% of assimilated 13C or 14C) in shoots than grasses (34%), mainly perennials, and allocated 1.5 times less C belowground. For crops, belowground C allocation was maximal during the first 1-2 months of growth and decreased very fast thereafter. For grasses, it peaked after 2-4 months and remained very high within the second year causing much longer allocation periods. Despite higher belowground C allocation by grasses (33%) than crops (21%), its distribution between various belowground pools remains very similar. Hence, the total C allocated belowground depends on the plant species, but its further fate is species independent. This review demonstrates that C partitioning can be used in various approaches, e.g., root sampling, CO2 flux measurements, to assess rhizodeposits' pools and fluxes at pot, plot, field and ecosystem scale and so, to close the most uncertain gap of the terrestrial C cycle. • Intact plant-soil mesocosms are translocated along an elevational gradient ranging from 1260 m to 350 m a.s.l. • Translocated microorganisms increased their active fraction, enzymatic activity and changed enzyme systems. • Warming in combination with decreased precipitation leads to shifts in microbial life strategies to K -strategists. • Microorganisms are C limited along the translocation from higher to lower elevations. • Climate change with warmer temperatures and periodically less precipitation will modify the microbial C and N demand. Soil microorganisms are the major players controlling the soil carbon (C) and nutrient cycling, however the extent to which the functional properties of soil microorganisms will alter with climate change in mountain grasslands is still unclear. To simulate future climatic conditions (higher temperature and less precipitation), intact plant-soil mesocosms of three mountain grassland sites, Esterberg (1260 m a.s.l.), Graswang (860 m a.s.l.), and Fendt 550 m a.s.l.), were translocated to the lowest elevation Bayreuth (350 m a.s.l.). After two years of translocation to warmer and drier environments, specific growth rates of soil microorganisms were 25 % slower than those at higher elevations. This indicated a shift towards to slow-growing K -strategists with increasing temperature and decreasing soil moisture, presumably attributed to the depletion of available C for microorganisms. Simultaneously, higher activity and faster substrate turnover time of C-acquiring enzymes in the warmer and drier soils implied a stronger C rather nutrient limitation. This was supported by the increased vector length, which was induced by decreased dissolved organic compounds at lower elevation. In contrast, microorganisms were limited by nitrogen (N) at higher elevation because of the stronger competition for N between plants and microorganisms. In short, translocated microorganisms increased their active fraction, enzymatic activity and altered enzyme systems but decreased specific growth rates. This indicated that soil microbial community adjusted to the changing climate resulting in faster substrate turnover, and in turn caused 15 % reduction in soil C content from Esterberg to Bayreuth. We therefore conclude that climate warming in combination with decreased precipitation increases microbial activity, leads to shifts in microbial life strategies and induces alterations in microbial nutrient limitation, i.e. shift from N- to C and P co-limitation with translocation to lower elevation sites. This in turn, is likely to result in C losses of mountain grassland soils under future climate change, which will amplify negative impacts on global warming. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• The effect of long-term fertilization practices on soil carbon (C) was assessed. • Fertilizations increased soil C despite the induced positive priming effects (PEs). • Manure application greatly increased soil C when combined with mineral fertilizer. • The magnitudes of PEs under the treatments were explained by microbial nitrogen mining. Organic and synthetic fertilizers not only increase soil fertility and crop productivity but also enhance soil organic carbon (SOC). However, the priming effect (PE) leads to increased soil carbon (C) loss through native SOC mineralization. To date, the mechanisms by which long-term (>66 years) synthetic and/or organic fertilization alters net SOC sequestration remain a matter of debate. This study aimed to assess the effects of different fertilization practices on SOC decomposition and PE in agricultural systems subjected to long-term annual synthetic and/or organic fertilizer application. This aim was achieved by collecting topsoil samples (0–20 cm) from four long-term fertilization practices, i.e., unfertilized, synthetic supplemental (+s), cattle farmyard manure (+m, similar nutrient amount to +s), and synthetic fertilizer with farmyard manure (+s +m, the highest nutrient amount). The soil samples were incubated for 33 days with and without 13C-glucose addition, and a CO 2 isotope analyzer combined with a modeling approach was used to establish a real-time method to monitor CO 2 and 13CO 2 production rates during the incubation period. Overall, +m increased the cumulative SOC-derived CO 2 (SOC-CO 2) by 107, 74, and 24 % compared to the unfertilized, +s and +s +m, respectively. The higher SOC-CO 2 in +m treatment was associated with the greatest priming effect (PE, 390 ± 21 mg C kg soil−1), which corresponded to a 30 % increase compared to the average of the treatments that involved synthetic fertilizer (+s and +s +m) and a 137 % increase compared to the unfertilized control. The results were explained by the lower dissolved nitrogen (N), a proxy of available mineral N, in +m compared to +s +m, thus enhancing microbial mining for additional N via increasing SOC mineralization. However, the combined application of synthetic fertilizer and manure in the +s +m treatment provided enough easily accessible nutrients for microbial growth and activities from the applied synthetic fertilizer, leading to lower SOC mineralization than manure (+m) alone. Nevertheless, the treatments with manure application (i.e., +m and +s +m) significantly increased net SOC compared to the synthetically fertilized treatment and unfertilized control, suggesting greater C inputs than outputs and leading to high SOC accumulation over time. These results indicated that organic manure has a great potential to mitigate climate change by increasing SOC over time, which can be fostered by the addition of synthetic fertilizer; however, caution still needs to be taken regarding the quality and quantity of the added fertilizer.
