Deep‐sea sediments record palaeoenvironmental and oceanographic changes over time through variations in their magnetochemical and sedimentological properties. This study presents the Late Quaternary sedimentary reconstruction of three sediment cores extracted from a source‐to‐sink sedimentary system located in a high marginal platform of the north‐west Iberian Margin. The aim of this reconstruction is to explore the palaeoclimatic, palaeoproductivity and diagenetic changes over the last 172 cal ka bp attending to geochemical, magnetic and sedimentological variations. The record is comprised of four sedimentary units consisting of pelagic, hemipelagic and detrital facies, the latter associated with ice‐rafted debris events at Heinrich Stadials. These findings allowed the reconstruction of the lithostratigraphy attending to climatic changes, covering the last eleven Heinrich Stadials. These units and facies successions are controlled by the superposition of the Milankovitch and Dansgaard–Oeschger cycles. Low sedimentation rates have been reported, especially during cold periods. Palaeoproductivity was assessed using total organic carbon and calcium carbonate content, together with biogenic barium (Babio) and organic phosphorus (Porg), both calculated via total digestion analysis using standard calculations. Mass accumulation rates for total organic carbon, Babio and Porg were calculated. Furthermore, a sequential extraction was performed to explore the different phases of the barium within sediments: biogenic barite (Babar), barium associated with iron and manganese oxides (Baox) and Ba associated with aluminosilicates (Badet). Results display a limitation in the use of the biogenic barium and phosphorus and mass accumulation rates, suggesting detrital Ba (Badetr) contribution during Heinrich Stadials, which could mask the calculations. In contrast, only calcium carbonate fluctuates attending to glacial/interglacial cycles. Regarding some diagenetic proxies (i.e. Mn, Mn/Fe and Mn/Ti), they reveal oxidation fronts of different generations, suggesting that the early diagenesis has not reached steady‐state, because the redoxcline fluctuates. The ITRAX core scanner, an useful tool to distinguish anthropic vs climatic influences in lagoon of Aveiro (N Portugal). The main goal of this work is to distinguish anthropic and climatic influences in sediments from the lagoon of Aveiro (Portugal). This study is based on a core (240-cm long) collected in Murtosa Channel. Optical and X-radiographic images and high-resolution elemental profiles were acquired with ITRAX micro-X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanner. Samples collected at each ≈3 cm along the core were analysed for grain size and total organic carbon. Furthermore, the fine fraction of selected layers was subjected to geochemical analysis by ICP-MS, after total acid digestion of the sediments, and mineralogical analysis, by XRD techniques. A radiocarbon age was determined by AMS, using molluscs shells collected at a depth of 90 cm. Sediments along the core are composed by fine and medium sand, with several mud layers. Sediments composing the first 100-cm may have been deposited after 1950, as it is indicated by the radiocarbon data, the increasing trend of Zn/Al, Pb/Al and Cu/Al and total concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cu, V, Cr, As and Ni in this interval that therefore might be linked with industrial activities of Chemical Complex of Estarreja. The progressive increase of Si/Al, Cl/Al, Rb/Al, K/Al and Br/Al and reduced Al concentrations, from the base to the top of this core, are interpreted as being related to higher marine influence and greater differences in tidal currents with longer exposition to air of the sediments with the consequent formation of brines favouring minerals precipitation in the area (e.g. anhydrite). These results seem to be a consequence of several works developed over time like: i) dredging to improve the navigation access to the harbour, located in the external sector of the lagoon; ii) the control of the course of some rivers influencing the supply of sediments. The tendency of sea level rise may have also emphasized the gradual increase of marine influence in this area. Fine-grained sections, related to an increase in Al, phyllosilicates, organic matter, pyrite and siderite contents would be attributed to phases of greater supply of fine-sediments during heavy rainfall events by the nearby Antuã river and other streams during negative phases of North Atlantic Oscillation. Higher deposition of organic matter enhanced diagenetic changes with pyrite and siderite formation. This work aims to study recent climatic oscillations and their influence on sedimentation in the Ria de Vigo, a coastal embayment in Galicia, NW Spain. It is based on the study of clay mineral assemblages, in conjunction with other proxies (granulometric, geochemical, geochronological and microfaunal), in the core KSGX 24. A Benthic Foraminifera High Productivity (BFHP) proxy was used to determine changes in the flux of organic matter (OM) at the bottom of the study area. Total organic carbon (TOC) content is not a suitable proxy to estimate changes in the past supply of OM due to diagenetic processes. The sedimentation was finest in 3 sections: ~ 230-214 cm, ~ 185-73 cm and ~ 20-0 cm. These muddy sections are characterised, in general, by higher proportions of detrital minerals, concentrations of several chemical elements related to lithogenic sources and BFHP values. In addition, these sections are impoverished in carbonates, Ca, Sr and La when compared with the layers with the highest sand content. The clay mineral assemblage of the studied site, characterised by the dominance of illite, intermediate concentrations of kaolinite and minor amounts of smectite and chlorite, reveals the prevalence of a typical temperate humid climate in the last 3 ka BP, the estimated age for the core base. However, the quantities of illite and chlorite increase in the muddy layers. The characteristics of these muddy layers were interpreted as representing relatively cold climatic oscillations associated with the strengthening of northerly winds and the prevalence of an upwelling regime corresponding to well-known periods, such as the first cold period of the Upper Holocene (~ 2.9 ka cal BP), the Dark Ages (between ~ 2.2 - 1.2 ka cal BP) and the Little Ice Age (~ 0.6 ka cal BP). Abstract: Monthly monitoring of magnetic properties of Platanus hispanica tree leaves was used to assess atmospheric pollution in Madrid (Spain) and its suburban town of Pozuelo de Alarcón. Magnetic susceptibility, isothermal remanent magnetisation and metal concentrations were analysed to study the sources of atmospheric pollutants and their spatial and temporal evolution. In addition to urban dust, our results indicated that lithogenic dust and incorporation of trace metals in the leaf tissue also control the magnetic susceptibility of tree leaves. Global comparisons with cities of different climatic regimes suggest that air humidity is the key factor controlling the relative influence of pollutants, lithogenic dust and biological effects on the magnetic properties of tree leaves. Interaction of the atmosphere and tree leaves depends not only on local meteorology but also on climate. Climate, especially air humidity, and meteorology need to be considered when interpreting the magnetic properties of tree leaves as an atmospheric pollution tool. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A multiproxy approach has been performed on sediments collected by gravity and box coring at the inner part of the Ría de Muros to reconstruct its environmental evolution since the Middle Holocene. This reconstruction is based on the chronological framework provided by radiocarbon dating of foraminifera samples. Three distinct facies were identified in the sedimentary record. The oldest, characterised by coarse-grained sediments and a strong terrestrial signature, is likely linked to the progradation of the delta-fan of the Maior River during a period of standstill subsequent to the Holocene sea-level maximum (ca. 6900 cal yr BP). The second facies started to deposit approximately 2865 ± 335 cal yr BP and is characterized by the deposition of finer-grained, marine-influenced sediments linked to a period of reduced local hydrodynamic energy, most likely due to a progression of sea-level rise. The third facies started to deposit approximately 1720 ± 180 cal yr BP and shows a progressively stronger marine influence. The characteristics of the last facies are explained as the result of the added effects of progressive sea-level rise and an intensified upwelling reaching the inner ría. This facies shows clear anthropogenic features since 555 ± 65 cal yr BP, associated with the important mediaeval development of the area. The obtained results suggest that high-resolution studies are key to resolve possible sea-level oscillations during the late Holocene and allow distinguishing local/regional changes superimposed to the global signals.
