Knowledge gain in the characteristics and mechanisms of drought propagation is indispensable for timely drought early warning and risk reduction over the grassland eco-region. This study focused on the Xilin River basin, which is a typical inland river basin located in the Inner Mongolia temperate steppe, China. The characteristics of meteorological and hydrological drought were assessed by applying the standardized precipitation index and standardized streamflow index. The propagation relationship between meteorological and hydrological droughts was then investigated from both static and dynamic perspectives, and the possible reasons for its temporal dynamics were discussed by considering environmental factors. Our results showed that the Xilin River basin has suffered from more serious meteorological drought than hydrological drought during the past 60 years, with a stationary evolution of meteorological drought but an overall drying trend in hydrological drought. The propagation from meteorological to hydrological droughts exhibited obvious seasonality, characterized by stronger intensity and shorter response time in the wet season. Nonstationary behaviors were identified for the temporal patterns of drought propagation time, especially showing a significant trend in April, May, and August. The dynamic changes in propagation time affected by regional forces were principally ruled by the precipitation variation positively and strongly, and they were moderately controlled by temperature, vegetation cover, and deep-layer soil moisture, with season-dependent effects. The effects of low-frequency atmospheric anomalies on drought propagation will be further investigated in future studies, which are expected to provide a better understanding of the physical mechanism of the large-scale climate forcing on local drought condition. To address the prominent problem of declining runoff in many rivers around the world, studying the law of runoff change and attribution analysis is very important for the planning and management of watershed water resources and has practical significance for solving the imbalance between supply and demand of watershed water resources and maintaining the healthy development of rivers. Three commonly used coupled water-energy balance equations based on Budyko hypothesis are selected to estimate the elasticity coefficient of runoff change to each driving factor, and the contribution rate of different factors to runoff change in the study area is quantified by the total differential method and the complementary method, respectively. The results show that the runoff of Huangfuchuan River basin showed a significant decreasing trend from 1954 to 2015, and the runoff mutation points were 1979 and 1996; in the alteration period I (1979–1996), precipitation was the main factor leading to the runoff reduction in Huangfuchuan River basin, followed by the influence of underlying surface; the contribution rate of underlying surface to runoff alterations ranged from 63.7% to 65.46%; the impact of potential evapotranspiration was slightly smaller. In the alteration period II (1997–2015), the underlying surface played a dominant role in runoff reduction of Huangfuchuan River basin. The contribution rate of the underlying surface to runoff change ranged from 80.21% to 86.34%, followed by precipitation, and the potential evapotranspiration had the least impact. The impact of human activities on the whole watershed increased with the passage of time. The land use change, the overall increase of NDVI (vegetation cover) and the construction of water conservation projects are important reasons for the reduction of runoff in Huangfuchuan River basin. Construction of water conservancy projects has changed the hydrological situation of rivers and has an essential impact on river ecosystems. The influence modes of different factors on runoff alterations are discussed to improve the development and utilization of water resources and promote ecological benefits. The ecological hydrological indicator change range method (IHA–RVA) and the hydrological alteration degree method were integrated to evaluate the hydrological situation of the Min River in China. Based on six Budyko hypothesis formulas, the rates of contribution of climate change and human activities to runoff change are quantitatively analyzed. The results show that (1) the runoff of the Min River basin showed a significant decreasing trend from 1960 to 2019 and a sudden alteration around 1993; (2) the overall alteration in runoff conditions was 45% moderate and the overall alteration in precipitation was 37% moderate; (3) precipitation and potential evapotranspiration also showed a decreasing trend within the same period but the overall trend was not significant; (4) the contribution of climate variability to runoff alterations is 30.2% and the contribution of human activities to runoff alterations is 69.8%; human activities are the dominant factor affecting the alteration of the runoff situation in the Min River basin. Summary: Miyun Reservoir is the main raw water source for Beijing’s domestic water supply. Flow discharge to Miyun Reservoir decreased drastically over a 50-year period, from 1956 to 2005, and had seriously affected Beijing’s water supply. Climate variability and human activity had been identified as the two main reasons for the decrease in flow. Here, climate variability refers to changes in precipitation and temperature. Impact of human activity includes direct withdrawal of water (referred to as “direct abstraction” in this paper) from the river (primary) or groundwater and indirect impact due to man-made changes in land use and vegetation in the upstream of the reservoir. According to the historical record, “direct abstraction” from the upstream of the reservoir has increased significantly since 1984. The study period was split into two sub-periods, from 1956 to 1983 and from 1984 to 2005. Based on the historical record, annual runoff in the upstream catchment of Miyun Reservoir (i.e., inflow into the reservoir) had decreased from 90.3mm to 41.8mm for the two sub-periods, a decrease of 48.5mm. Over the same period, average annual “direct abstraction” increased from 2.2mm to 13.4mm, an increase of 11.2mm. The latter accounted for 23% (11.2mm/48.5mm) of the decrease in inflow into the reservoir. This study utilised: (1) a distributed hydrological model (geomorphology-based hydrological model, or GBHM) and (2) a climate elasticity model to conduct a quantitative assessment of the impact of climate variability and the indirect impact of human activity on the inflow into the reservoir. Simulation results of GBHM and the climate elasticity model showed that climate impact was accountable for about 55% and 51% of the decrease in reservoir inflow, respectively. Compound droughts and heat waves have garnered increasing attentions due to their disastrous impacts on the structure and function of ecosystems and societies. A drought is generally characterized by a precipitation deficit, and its negative impact can be amplified by the simultaneous occurrence of a heat wave. More recent studies have highlighted the multicharacteristics of compound droughts and heat waves, which may call for improved efforts on assessing the impact of compound extremes. In this study, a compound drought and heat wave magnitude index (CDHMI) is built to characterize the severity of compound extremes in the Huai River basin (HRB) during 1961–2017. The CDHMI considers the impact of both drought/extreme heat conditions and the duration of drought/extreme heat. In addition, the magnitude index has been graded according to the degree of severity to detect the most drastic extreme compound events. The results show that from 1961 to 2017, mild and moderate events occurred more often than severe events. A significant increase in all compound events was observed from 2003 to 2017. Compound drought and heat wave events, especially in drought status, have increased significantly with the global climate warming in recent decades. The assessment of the impact for compound drought and heat wave events over the HRB needs to be improved in the context of global climate changing. The thermal growing season (TGS) that strongly correlates with changes in temperature refers to the whole period during which vegetation growth can occur. The daily mean air temperature data of 66meteorological stations located in the Yellow River basin (YRB) from 1960 to 2017 were used to investigate the inter-annual variations in the TGS indices and their relationships with atmospheric teleconnection patterns (ATPs). The thermal growing season start (GSS), thermal growing season end (GSE), and the length of thermal growing season (GSL) were considered. Our results suggested a significant negative trend in GSS, together with a significant positive trend in GSE, leading to a significant extension of GSL by 2.4 day/decade (p<0.01). The spatial patterns in the trends between GSS and GSE were distinct in this study, indicating that the changes in temperature in spring were considerably different from those in autumn. The mutation analysis presented in this study showed that mutation points in GSS, GSE, and GSL overall were observed in 1998, 1996, and 2001, respectively. Furthermore, the TGS indices were influenced by the ATPs discussed in this studyat certain time scales, and the entire research area was affected by multiple climate indices, indicating that other climate indexes always adjusted the influences of one climate index. Understanding of the vegetation dynamics is essential for addressing the potential threats of terrestrial ecosystem. In recent years, the vegetation coverage of the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) has increased significantly, yet the spatio-temporal variations and potential driving meteorological factors of carbon use efficiency (CUE) under the context of global warming are still not clear. In this study, MODIS-based public-domain data during 2000–2015 was used to analyze these aspects in the YRB, a large river basin with powerful ecological functions in China. Spatio-temporal variations of CUE in different sub-basins and land cover types were investigated and the correlations with potential driving meteorological factors were examined. Results revealed that CUE in the YRB had strong spatiotemporal variability and varied remarkably in different land cover types. For the whole YRB, the average CUE of vegetated land was 0.519, while the long-term change trend of CUE was obscure. Along the rising altitude, CUE generally showed an increasing trend until the altitude of 3900 m and then followed by a decreasing trend. CUE of grasslands was generally higher than that of croplands, and then forest lands. The inter-annual variation of CUE in the YRB is likely to be driven by precipitation as a strong positive partial correlation between the inter-annual variability of CUE and precipitation was observed in most of sub-basins and land cover types in the YRB. The influence of temperature and relative humidity is also outstanding in certain regions and land cover types. Purpose: Significant changes in the runoff and sediment load have been detected in many catchments of the Loess Plateau. These changes are expected to be influenced by the interplay of climate variability and human activities. Quantitatively evaluating these effects is crucial for framing climate variability adaptation measures and the assessment and management of regional water resources. Materials and methods: Based on the annual rainfall, runoff, and sediment load data taken over the period from 1974 to 2013 and using data from 112 flood events, this study investigates the runoff and sediment load variations at the annual scale and distinguishes the impacts of climate variability and human activities at the event scale. The Mann-Kendall test and Pettitt's test are employed to detect the trends and abrupt change points of the annual runoff and sediment load. Rainfall and land surface conditions play a dominant role in the runoff and sediment yield of flood events. However, vegetation recovery, which benefits from the Grain-for-Green project and the construction of check dams has greatly changed the land surface condition, resulting in a reduction in streamflow energy, hydrological connectivity, and flood peaks. Therefore, for two flood events with similar rainfall conditions but different runoff and sediment yield, the differences in the runoff and sediment load within paired events may be attributed to the changes in the land surface condition induced by human activities. Results and discussion: The results showed that the annual runoff and sediment load has significantly decreasing trends (p < 0.05). The abrupt changing point was detected in 1996, dividing the runoff and sediment load series into a baseline period (1974–1995) and a changing period (1996–2013). At the flood event scale, the hysteresis analysis showed that the counter-clockwise and figure-eight loops are the main patterns for both of the periods. The relationships between the runoff depth (H) and sediment yield (SY) varied greatly in 2007–2013 compared with those during 1974–1989. Human activities accounted for an average of 47 and 81% for the changes in the runoff and sediment load, respectively, and the remainder was attributable to climate variability. Conclusions: Human activities have a greater effect on the sediment load reduction in the Xichuan River catchment, while climate variability accounted for more of the runoff changes. Extensive studies on hydrological responses to forest change have been published for centuries, yet partitioning the hydrological effects of forest change, climate variability and other factors in a large watershed remains a challenge. In this study, we developed a single watershed approach combining the modified double mass curve (MDMC) and the time series multivariate autoregressive integrated moving average model (ARIMAX) to separate the impact of forest change, climate variability and other factors on dry season runoff variation in two large watersheds in China. The Zagunao watershed was examined for the deforestation effect, while the Meijiang watershed was examined to study the hydrological impact of reforestation. The key findings are: (1) both deforestation and reforestation led to significant reductions in dry season runoff, while climate variability yielded positive effects in the studied watersheds; (2) the hydrological response to forest change varied over time due to changes in soil infiltration and evapotranspiration after vegetation regeneration; (3) changes of subalpine natural forests produced greater impact on dry season runoff than alteration of planted forests. These findings are beneficial to water resource and forest management under climate change and highlight a better planning of forest operations and management incorporated trade-off between carbon and water in different forests. Changes in land use and climate and their significantly impacts on the hydrological cycle are of widespread concern to researchers and policy makers. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model is used to analyze the effects of land use change and climate variability in the upper Naoli River watershed in the Sanjiang plain, northeast China. The remarkable land use changes include the decrease of woodland and wetland along with the farmland increasing. And then the rise rate has gradually diminished in recent years which should attributed to the China's ecological environment construction project 'Grain to Green' and 'Convert farmland into forest and pasture' initiated in the late 1990s. Meanwhile, the climate is getting warmer and drier and the runoff variation has the same trend with precipitation and the opponent trend with temperature on the whole. Furthermore, the streamflow is affected by the combined effects of land use change and climate variability which exerts different influences in different periods. Much attention has recently been focused on the effects of climate variability and human activities on the runoff. In this study, we analyzed 56-yr (1957-2012) runoff change and patterns in the Jinghe River Basin (JRB) in the arid region of northwest China. The nonparametric Mann-Kendall test and the precipitation-runoff double cumulative curve (PRDCC) were used to identify change trend and abrupt change points in the annual runoff. It was found that the runoff in the JRB has periodically fluctuated in the past 56 yr. Abrupt change point in annual runoff was identified in the JRB, which occurred in the years around 1964 and 1996 dividing the long-term hydrologic series into a natural period (1957-1964) and a climate and man-induced period (1965-1996 and 1997-2012). In the 1965-1996 period, human activities were the main factor that decreased runoff with contribution of 88.9%, while climate variability only accounted for 11.1%. However, the impact of climate variability has been increased from 11.1% to 47.5% during 1997-2012, showing that runoff in JRB is more sensitive to climate variability during global warming. This study distinguishes the effect of climate variability from human activities on runoff, which can do duty for a reference for regional water resources assessment and management. Restored annual streamflow ( Qr) and measured daily streamflow of the Chaohe watershed located in northern China and associated long-term climate and land use/cover data were used to explore the effects of land use/cover change and climate variability on the streamflow during 1961-2009. There were no significant changes in annual precipitation ( P) and potential evapotranspiration, whereas Qr decreased significantly by 0.81 mm/yr ( p < 0.001) over the study period with a change point in 1999. We used 1961-1998 as the baseline period ( BP) and 1999-2009 the change period ( CP). The mean Qr during the CP decreased by 39.4 mm compared with that in the BP. From 1979 to 2009, the grassland area declined by 69.6%, and the forest and shrublands increased by 105.4 and 73.1%, respectively. The land use/cover change and climate variability contributed for 58.4 and 41.6% reduction in mean annual Qr, respectively. Compared with the BP, median and high flows in the CP decreased by 38.8 and up to 75.5%, respectively. The study concludes that large-scale ecological restoration and watershed management in northern China has greatly decreased water yield and reduced high flows due to the improved land cover by afforestation leading to higher water loss through evapotranspiration. Variability of the climate in the headwater drainage basins of the Yangtze River and Yellow River during 1961-2010 was investigated by examining four typical climatic variables: daily minimum, mean, and maximum temperatures and daily precipitation. The results indicate that the temporal trends vary among the climatic variables and the time periods examined. The increase in daily minimum temperature began later than the daily mean and maximum temperatures, but the increase rate of the former was relatively greater after 1985. The abrupt increases in precipitation that occurred near 1978 were much clearer than the three temperature variables. Four dominant periodicities (3, 7, 11, and 18-20 yr) of temperature and precipitation were identified, and these variation patterns directly determined the periodic discharge variations in the two rivers. Under climate change impacts, periodic variations in temperature and precipitation at long temporal scales were intensified after the 1980s. Comparatively, climate change more severely impacts the minimum temperature and precipitation than the maximum and mean temperatures in the study area, and the variability of daily precipitation is more complex than the three temperature variables. Overall, the headwater drainage basin of the Yellow River is more susceptible to climate change compared with the other basin. After 2008, the increase rate of temperature (especially the daily mean and minimum temperatures) became greater, and precipitation showed a downward trend in the study areas. Terrestrial water storage (TWS) variations are a result of the interconnected impact of various variables including climate, hydrology, ecology, and anthropogenic activities. Previous studies have indicated that climate factors (e.g., precipitation and potential evapotranspiration), vegetation restoration, and water withdrawals (irrigational and industrial water use) are the major determinants of TWS depletion across the Yellow River Basin (YRB). However, few studies have provided explicit information about the main forcing variables that determine spatiotemporal variations in TWS and the synergies among these factors. This study explored the explicit understanding of hydro-climatic and socio-ecological determinants and the key interacting processes that affected the TWS variations across the Yellow River Basin in northern China. The multivariate adaptive regression splines model was employed to establish the relationship function of the long-term trends for the dependent (TWS) and independent (explanatory) variables consisting of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), hydro-climate, and human water withdrawal. The long-term trends estimated from the MARS model reproduced the ones calculated by Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment gravity satellites, with a determination coefficient (R2) of 0.83 and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.2 mm. The results showed that precipitation, minimum temperature, runoff, base flow, water withdrawal for electricity, and NDVI were the main drivers of the spatiotemporal variations in the TWS, of which minimum temperature and runoff played a considerable role in TWS variations through the interplay with other variables. The critical values of the trend for interactive variables, which could alter the acting direction of the synergy on the TWS, were also estimated. In view of the connotation of interactive variables, we suggested that spatiotemporal variations in TWS resulted from the coupling of the hydrological energy system, hydrological ecosystem, and hydrological system in the YRB, of which the hydrological system plays the most significant role, followed by the hydrological ecosystem. The serious soil erosion problems and decreased runoff of the Loess Plateau may aggravate the shortage of its local water resources. Understanding the spatiotemporal influences on runoff changes is important for water resource management. Here, we study this in the largest tributary of the Yellow River, the Weihe River Basin. Data from four hydrological stations (Lin Jia Cun (LJC), Xian Yang (XY), Lin Tong (LT), and Hua Xian (HX)) and 10 meteorological stations from 1961–2014 were used to analyze changes in annual runoff. The Mann–Kendall test and Pettitt abrupt change point test diagnosed variations in runoff in the Weihe River basin; the time periods before and after abrupt change points are the base period (period I) and change period (period II), respectively. Within the Budyko framework, the catchment properties (ω in Fu's equation) represent land surface changes; climate variability comprises precipitation (P) and potential evapotranspiration (ET0). All the stations showed a reduction in annual runoff during the recording period, of which 22.66% to 50.42% was accounted for by land surface change and 1.97% to 53.32% by climate variability. In the Weihe River basin, land surface changes drive runoff variation in LT and climate variability drives it in LJC, XY, and HX. The contribution of land surface changes to runoff reduction in period I was less than that in period II, indicating that changes in human activity further decreased runoff. Therefore, this study offers a scientific basis for understanding runoff trends and driving forces, providing an important reference for social development, ecological construction, and water resource management.
