In this paper, a statistical analysis of the diurnal, seasonal and solar cycle variation in the TEC longitudinal difference in midlatitudes of East Asia is presented using CODE GIMs data in 2015–2019. Moreover, the empirical neutral wind model HWM-14 and geomagnetic field model IGRF-2020 were employed to analyze the influence of geomagnetic configuration-neutral wind mechanism on the TEC longitudinal difference, and the F2 layer peak electron density (NmF2) data from the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate (COSMIC) were also used to study the role of local electron density in the TEC longitudinal difference. For the high solar activity year, the results show that east-west TEC longitudinal difference index Re/w is negative in the noon and positive at evening-night. Moreover, the longitudinal difference of daytime TEC is most evident in summer, less in autumn and least in spring and winter, while the nighttime difference is most obvious in equinox, followed by summer and winter during nighttime. The model simulation shows that the TEC longitude difference around noon is mainly caused by the zonal wind-declination mechanism, and a 4-h time delay seems to be an optimal result for the vertical drift velocity to cause the longitudinal TEC difference during pre-noon hours. At night, the uplifting electron flux, which is a product of local electron density and vertical drift velocity, shows a good correlation with Re/w, indicating that the local electron density is also an important factor affecting the TEC longitudinal difference during the nighttime. Moreover, there was about a 3-h time delay between the TEC longitudinal variations and the uplifting electron flux at night. For the low solar activity years, the western TEC is greater than eastern TEC during most of the year except in the summer nighttime. The TEC diurnal variation in the east and west suggested that the nighttime Re/w should be related to other physical process, such as the midlatitude summer nighttime anomaly (MSNA) in the east and the ionospheric nighttime enhancement (INE). The current study provides evidence for the longitudinal difference of NmF2 in East Asian midlatitudes and geomagnetic configuration-neutral wind mechanism proposed in previous studies and finds some new features which need further studying to improve our current understanding of ionospheric longitudinal difference in the low solar activity years. The East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) is one of the most important climate systems during boreal winter. It has a large meridional extent and provides a vital bridge between the mid‐to‐high latitudes and the tropics. This paper reviews the latest research on the climate variability of the EAWM, with particular emphasis on the associated processes of extratropical–tropical interaction. Some new results have been achieved in understanding the variation of the EAWM on interdecadal, interannual, and intraseasonal time scales, such as the interdecadal strengthening in the early 21st century, the unstable impact of El Niño–South Oscillation (ENSO) on the EAWM, and the intraseasonal strong cold events in East Asia. In addition, understanding of the extratropical–tropical interactions related to the EAWM has improved in several aspects, including the impacts of the EAWM on ENSO‐related climate effects, and the variation of regional Hadley circulation over the western Pacific and its climate impacts in the Asia–Australia region. Moreover, recent work has systematically evaluated the capacity of climate models to simulate the EAWM, including its climatology, interannual to interdecadal variations, and its relationship with ENSO. This paper analyzes climatological characteristics and temporal variation of the start and end dates of the rainy season over East Asia using a daily precipitation dataset for the time period 1951-2009. The rainy season is defined by a 5-day rainfall standard, and the regional average time series is constructed by applying the weighted-average method. Results show that the rainy season starts later, ends earlier and lasts shorter from southeast to northwest. In spring, the rainy belt slowly moves northward from 30 to 33°N in China and from 33 to 36°N on the Korean Peninsula and Japanese Islands. From 1951 to 2009, the rainy season generally began earlier in China but later in Korea and Japan, and it ended earlier at latitudes north of 35°N and later south of 35°N. The region-averaged start and end dates of the rainy season in the study region insignificantly advanced, and the duration of the rainy season insignificantly increased from 1951 to 2009. The rainy season duration slightly decreased in the Russian Far East and in northern and western China, and significantly decreased on the Korean Peninsula and the southern Hokkaido Islands, though it obviously increased in the Yangtze--Huaihe River Basins. In this paper, the performances of 12 CMIP5 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5) models for simulating the climatology and interannual variability of the East Asian trough (EAT) are assessed using the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis data and the outputs of the CMIP5 models. The multimodel ensemble (MME) successfully reproduces the spatial pattern and spatial variations in the climatology and interannual variability of the EAT but the intensity and interannual variability of EAT are weaker than in the observations. The biases in intensity (interannual variability) are larger over the southern (northern) part of the EAT than over the northern (southern) part. The intermodel spreads are small for the EAT intensity but are large for its location in terms of both latitude and longitude. The simulated EAT in the MME is about 3° E and 1.5° S of that observed. All 12 CMIP5 models reproduce the first empirical orthogonal function (EOF) mode of EAT activity; however, its intensity and location are only successfully captured in half of the models and its linear weakening trend is simulated in ten models. The climatological mean summer monsoon onset in the South China Sea (SCS) is a remarkably abrupt event. However, defining onset dates for individual years is noticeably controversial. The controversies and complications arise primarily from a number of factors: the intermittent southward intrusion of cold fronts into the northern SCS, the bogus onset in late April before the establishment of tropical monsoons over Indochina, and active intraseasonal oscillation. In this paper, a simple yet effective index, U[sub SCS] , the 850-hPa zonal winds averaged over the central SCS (5°–15°N and 110°–120°E), is proposed for objectively defining the SCS monsoon onset. This onset index depicts not only the sudden establishment of the tropical southwesterly monsoon over the SCS but also the outbreak of the rainy season in the central-northern SCS. In this paper the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) is defined as the broadscale summer monsoon over East Asia and the western North Pacific region (0°–40°N, 100°–140°E). It is shown that the seasonal transition of EASM can be objectively determined by the principal component of the dominant empirical orthogonal mode of the 850-hPa zonal winds, U[sub EOF1] . It is found that the local index U[sub SCS] represents U[sub EOF1] extremely well; thus, it can be used to determine both the SCS onset and the commencement of the broadscale EASM. The result suggests that the SCS summer monsoon onset indeed signifies the beginning of the summer monsoon over East Asia and the adjacent western Pacific Ocean. Evidence is also provided to show the linkage between the two salient phases of EASM: the local onset of the SCS monsoon and the local onset of the mei-yu (the rainy season in the Yangtze River and Huai River basin and southern Japan). Land-sea surface air temperature (SAT) contrast, an index of tropospheric thermodynamic structure and dynamical circulation, has shown a significant increase in recent decades over East Asia during the boreal summer. In Part I of this two-part paper, observational data and the results of transient warming experiments conducted using coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation models (GCMs) are analyzed to examine changes in land-sea thermal contrast and the associated atmospheric circulation over East Asia from the past to the future. The interannual variability of the land-sea SAT contrast over the Far East for 1950-2012 was found to be tightly coupled with a characteristic tripolar pattern of tropospheric circulation over East Asia, which manifests as anticyclonic anomalies over the Okhotsk Sea and around the Philippines, and a cyclonic anomaly over Japan during a positive phase, and vice versa. In response to CO increase, the cold northeasterly winds off the east coast of northern Japan and the East Asian rainband were strengthened with the circulation pattern well projected on the observed interannual variability. These results are commonly found in GCMs regardless of future forcing scenarios, indicating the robustness of the East Asian climate response to global warming. This paper investigates the dynamical processes through which the Tibetan Plateau (TP) influences the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) within the framework of the moist static energy (MSE) budget, using both observations and atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) simulations. The focus is on the most prominent feature of the EASM, the so-called meiyu-baiu (MB), which is characterized by a well-defined, southwest-northeast elongated quasi-stationary rainfall band, spanning from eastern China to Japan and into the northwestern Pacific Ocean between mid-June and mid-July. Observational analyses of the MSE budget of the MB front indicate that horizontal advection of moist enthalpy, and primarily of dry enthalpy, sustains the front in a region of otherwise negative net energy input into the atmospheric column. A decomposition of the horizontal dry enthalpy advection into mean, transient, and stationary eddy fluxes identifies the longitudinal thermal gradient due to zonal asymmetries and the meridional stationary eddy velocity as the most influential factors determining the pattern of horizontal moist enthalpy advection. Numerical simulations in which the TP is either retained or removed show that the TP influences the stationary enthalpy flux, and hence the MB front, primarily by changing the meridional stationary eddy velocity, with reinforced southerly wind over the MB region and northerly wind to its north. Changes in the longitudinal thermal gradient are mainly confined to the near downstream of the TP, with the resulting changes in zonal warm air advection having a lesser impact on the rainfall in the extended MB region. The mid-latitudes of East Asia are characterized by the interaction between the Asian summer monsoon and the westerly winds. Understanding long-term climate change in the marginal regions of the Asian monsoon is critical for understanding the millennial-scale interactions between the Asian monsoon and the westerly winds. Abrupt climate events are always associated with changes in large-scale circulation patterns; therefore, investigations into abrupt climate changes provide clues for responses of circulation patterns to extreme climate events. In this paper, we examined the time scale and mid-Holocene climatic background of an abrupt dry mid-Holocene event in the Shiyang River drainage basin in the northwest margin of the Asian monsoon. Mid-Holocene lacustrine records were collected from the middle reaches and the terminal lake of the basin. Using radiocarbon and OSL ages, a centennial-scale drought event, which is characterized by a sand layer in lacustrine sediments both from the middle and lower reaches of the basin, was absolutely dated between 8.0–7.0 cal kyr BP. Grain size data suggest an abrupt decline in lake level and a dry environment in the middle reaches of the basin during the dry interval. Previous studies have shown mid-Holocene drought events in other places of monsoon marginal zones; however, their chronologies are not strong enough to study the mechanism. According to the absolutely dated records, we proposed a new hypothesis that the mid-Holocene dry interval can be related to the weakening Asian summer monsoon and the relatively arid environment in arid Central Asia. Furthermore, abrupt dry climatic events are directly linked to the basin-wide effective moisture change in semi-arid and arid regions. Effective moisture is affected by basin-wide precipitation, evapotranspiration, lake surface evaporation and other geographical settings. In this paper the model outputs from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) phase 5 (CMIP5) are used to examine the climatology and interannual variability of the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM). The multimodel ensemble (MME) is able to reproduce reasonably well the circulation features of the EAWM. The simulated surface air temperature still suffers from a cold bias over East Asia, but this bias is reduced compared with CMIP phase 3 models. The intermodel spread is relatively small for the large-scale circulations, but is large for the lower-tropospheric meridional wind and precipitation along the East Asian coast. The interannual variability of the EAWM-related circulations can be captured by most of the models. A general bias is that the simulated variability is slightly weaker than in the observations. Based on a selected dynamic EAWM index, the patterns of the EAWM-related anomalies are well reproduced in MME although the simulated anomalies are slightly weaker than the observations. One general bias is that the northeasterly anomalies over East Asia cannot be captured to the south of 30°N. This bias may arise both from the inadequacies of the EAWM index and from the ability of models to capture the EAWM-related tropical-extratropical interactions. The ENSO-EAWM relationship is then evaluated and about half of the models can successfully capture the observed ENSO-EAWM relationship, including the significant negative correlation between Niño-3.4 and EAWM indices and the anomalous anticyclone (or cyclone) over the northwestern Pacific. Vegetation–climate relationships are often different at varying spatial scales, which is seldom taken into account in reconstructing past climate changes from fossil pollen spectra represent more local vegetation composition but using regional or extra-regional modern pollen–climate calibration set. In this paper, we employ 2620 surface pollen spectra and six pollen sequences from continental East Asia to reconstruct Holocene climate with modern analogue technique. A novel data set of vegetation sensitivity index (VSI) is introduced to examine vegetation–climate relationships in 0.5° search windows around the fossil sites (local) and in the tailored calibration sets (regional). Then, we compare them to the explanatory abilities of (reconstructed) climate variables on explaining the pollen variance in calibration sets and in the fossil pollen data sets using constrained ordination, cross-validation and significance test. By this procedure that we called local–regional–fossil comparison, we can better determine which variable reconstruction is valid and useful. In our cases, moisture variable reconstructions in temperate forest-steppe ecotone at the East Asian summer monsoon margin are reliable. Consistent Holocene moisture variations with a strong monsoon influence during 8.6–4.0 cal ka BP which can help us to better interpret human adaptations along the Great Wall. However, quantitative climate reconstructions at some sites are less reliable due to highly heterogeneous vegetation sensitivities surrounding the site, particularly for areas with complicated topographical contexts. During glacial periods, the East Asian monsoon is typically thought to have been stronger in boreal winters and weaker in boreal summers. It is unclear, however, whether this view is true at larger scales and to what extent the East Asian monsoon responds to glacial conditions as a whole. Using all experiments conducted as part of the Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project (PMIP), this paper examines East Asian monsoon climatology during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), around 21 000 calendar years ago. In contrast to conclusions drawn from sparse proxy data, the intensity of the East Asian winter (December-February) monsoon (EAWM) during the LGM, as measured by regionally averaged meridional wind speed at 850 hPa, was found to vary both in sign and magnitude, with reference to baseline climate, across the PMIP simulations. It strengthened in 10 out of the 21 models but weakened in the remaining 11 models, with an average weakening of 4% for the 21-model ensemble mean (15% for the ensemble mean of the 14 models with computed sea surface temperatures). At the subregional scale, the LGM EAWM strengthened north of about 30°N but weakened south of this region in East Asia, which can be explained by changes in surface temperature. On the other hand, all of the 14 models chosen in this study consistently simulated a weaker than baseline East Asian summer (June-August) monsoon during the LGM, with an average weakening of 25%. This paper documents the sensitivity of the modeled evolution of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) to physical parameterization using the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Regional Spectral Model (RSM). To this end, perfect boundary condition experiments driven by analysis data are designed for August 2003 to investigate the individual role of the surface processes, boundary layer, and convection parameterization on the simulated monsoon. Also, 10-yr June–August (JJA) simulations from 1996 to 2005 are performed to evaluate the overall impacts of these revisions on the simulated EASM climatology. The one-month simulation for August 2003 reveals that the experiment with a realistic distribution of land use conditions and vegetation and smaller thermal roughness length simulates higher temperature and geopotential height. On the other hand, in the experiment with an improved boundary layer scheme, the rainfall amount is slightly decreased due to reduced vertical mixing. The simulation with revised subgrid-scale processes in the cumulus parameterization scheme reproduces a rainband over the subtropics, which is weakly simulated by the default package. The overall large-scale distribution from the experiment, which includes all three revised physics processes, shows the same direction as that of the revised convection run in the middle and upper troposphere, but is improved further when other newly enhanced processes are combined. These improvements are also achieved in a 10-yr summer simulation. It is distinct that the revised physics package improves the large-scale patterns by strengthening the intensity of the North Pacific high and reducing the intensity of the lower-level jet, which are critical components in the EASM. The present study examines variations in summertime (July–September) tropical cyclone (TC) activity over East Asia during the period 1951–2003. To represent TC activity, a total of 853 TC best tracks for the period were converted to TC passage frequencies (TPFs) within 5° × 5° latitude–longitude grids; TPFs are defined as the percentage values obtained by dividing the number of TC appearances in each grid box by the total number of TCs each year. Empirical orthogonal function analysis of the TPF showed three leading modes: two tropical modes that represent the long-term trend and the relationship with ENSO and one midlatitude mode that oscillates between south of Korea and southeast of Japan with an interannual time scale. The latter proved to be the most remarkable climatic fluctuation of summertime TC activity in the midlatitudes and is referred to as the East Asian dipole pattern (EADP) in this paper. Anomalous atmospheric flows directly connected to the EADP are an enhanced anticyclonic (cyclonic) circulation centering around Japan when the TPF is high south of Korea (southeast of Japan), thereby showing an equivalent barotropic structure in the entire troposphere. This regional circulation anomaly varies in conjunction with the zonally oriented quasi-stationary Rossby wave train in the upper troposphere. This wave train is meridionally trapped in the vicinity of the summer-mean jet stream; therefore, the mean jet stream alters its internal meandering structure according to the phase of the wave train. Paleoclimate modeling has become an important tool to detect the future climate of the global warming that is difficult to be validated. The paleoclimate modeling has to be evaluated by regionally geological data in order to determine if it is able to reproduce a reality of climate states. Geological evidence shows that there was a warm-wet interstadial at 35000±3000 a BP in China, which provides an important climate period to be historical analogue for the future climate changes induced by greenhouse gas emissions. Integrated geological records of later phase of the MSI3 from China also provide basements for evaluation of 35 ka BP climate modeling. This paper reports the paleoclimate experiments applied by various forces, and validates the outputs by geological data, consequently improving the boundary conditions in the experiments and making the paleoclimates more approach the reality. The simulations show an increased temperature in the mid-low latitudes and an extended rain-belt northwards in East Asia, while a decreased temperature in high latitudes and a strong exchange of the N-S atmospheric circulation. As there is only ca. 10–15 ka from 35 ka BP to the LGM (21 ka BP) during which climate rapidly changed from a warm-wet interstadial to a typical ice age, this simulation provides scientific basis to recognize the criteria of global warming and trends of natural climate development. A regional coupled soil–vegetation–atmosphere model is used to study changes and interactions between climate and the ecosystem in East Asia due to increased atmospheric CO[sub 2] . The largest simulated climate changes are due to the radiative influence of CO[sub 2] , modified slightly by vegetation feedbacks. Annual precipitation increases by about 20% in coastal areas of northern China and in central China, but only by 8% in southern China. The strongest warming of up to 4°C occurs in summer in northern China. Generally, the climate tends to be warmer and wetter under doubled CO[sub 2] except for inland areas of northern China, where it becomes warmer and drier. Most of the changes discussed in this paper are associated with changes in the East Asian monsoon, which is intensified under doubled CO[sub 2] . The largest changes and feedbacks between vegetation and climate occur in northern China. In some coastal and central areas around 40°N, temperate deciduous forests expand northward, replacing grassland due to warmer and wetter climate. Evergreen taiga retreats in the coastal northeast, causing extra cooling feedback due to less snow masking. The largest changes occur in extensive inland regions northward of 40°N, where deserts and shrub land expand due to warmer and drier conditions, and water supply is a critical factor for vegetation. These northern inland ecosystems experience considerable degradation and desertification, indicating a marked sensitivity and vulnerability to climatic change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To study the climatology of thunderstorm activity (TA) in the south of the Russian Far East according to data of 34 weather stations and data of the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) for 2009–2018, the optimal radii of the circular area of the WWLLN data sample centered at each station were obtained. The optimal radii, at which the correspondence between data of thunderstorm observations and lightning detections at weather stations is maximum, were estimated by two statistical methods based on the calculation of the Threat Score and the difference of days with TA. Taking into account the previously published results, the values of the optimal radii vary from 5 to 39 km and, on average, in the south of the Russian Far East are 23 km. Differences in the estimates of radii for the mainland, coastal, and island (Sakhalin) stations were noted, the average values for which were 25 km, 23 km, and 19.5 km, respectively, as well as for nighttime and daytime. In the south of the Far East as a whole and at the mainland and coastal stations separately, the "nighttime" optimal radii are on average larger than the "daytime" ones, on Sakhalin—on the contrary. The values of optimal radii obtained by two methods were used to estimate the average annual number of lightning WWLLN days for each weather station, which were compared with the average annual number of thunderstorm days based on human observations. It was found that the difference between them at all stations was within ±6 days/year and up to 1.3 days/year, the root mean square deviations were 2.4 days/year and 0.4 days/year for the first and second methods, respectively. It is shown that the WWLLN data reflect the main features of the intra-annual TA variation according to weather station data, and also make it possible to identify individual thunderstorms during TA variation at a diurnal scale, including those not noted in the reports of weather stations, and mesoscale structures formed by cumulus clouds in the spatial distribution of lightning. This paper presents the climatology and interannual variation of the East Asian winter monsoon based on the 1979--95 National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis. In addition to documenting the frequency, intensity, and preferred propagation tracks of cold surges and the evolution patterns of related fields, the authors discuss the temporal distribution of the Siberian high and cold surges. Further, the interannual variation of the cold surges and winter monsoon circulation and its relationship with ENSO were examined. There are on average 13 cold surges in each winter season (October--April), of which two are strong cases. The average intensity of cold surges, measured by maximum sea level pressure, is 1053 hPa. The cold surges originate from two source regions: 1) northwest of Lake Baikal, and 2) north of Lake Balkhash. The typical evolution of a cold surge occurs over a period of 5--14 days. Trajectory and correlation analyses indicate that, during this time, high pressure centers propagate southeastward around the edge of the Tibetan Plateau from the mentioned source regions. Some of these high pressure centers then move eastward and diminish over the oceans, while others proceed southward. The signatures of the associated temperature, wind, and pressure fields propagate farther southward and eastward. The affected area encompasses the bulk of the maritime continent. Although the intensity of the Siberian high peaks during December and January, the frequency of cold surges reaches a maximum in November and in March. This result suggests that November through March should be considered as the East Asian winter monsoon season. Two stratifications of cold surges are used to examine the relationship between ENSO and the interannual variation of the winter monsoon. A comprehensive model assessment on a 6-hourly scale from multiple dimensions is critical for model selection of dynamic downscaling to reduce uncertainties. In this study, we evaluated the performance of 13 models involved in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project-6 (CMIP6) by comparing the simulated meteorological variables at the pressure levels of 850, 500, and 250 hPa, including 6-hourly air temperature, specific humidity, zonal wind, meridional wind, and geopotential height, to those from the ERA5 reanalysis data for the 1979–2014 period. The results indicated that the CMIP6 models could mostly reproduce the spatial pattern of the climatology. Most models underestimated air temperature and geopotential height while overestimating specific humidity and zonal and meridional wind speeds in the upper troposphere. Additionally, the interannual variability of zonal and meridional wind exhibited a relatively better performance but limited ability for specific humidity at 850 hPa. Regarding the annual and diurnal cycles, CMIP6 models reasonably captured the annual cycle shape, while an overestimation was detected in simulating the diurnal amplitude, notably at 250 hPa. Based on a comprehensive rating index and overall rankings, our findings showed that no single model was identified as suitable for the simulation of any variables and regions. The models performed well for five variables, including MPI-ESM1-2-LR, MPI-ESM1-2-HR, TaiESM1, and UKESM1-0-LL, over East Asia. Then, according to the overall performance of the five variables and model accessibility, the optimal model varied by region and shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) scenario. The multi-model ensemble mean outperformed individual models over almost all regions when it comes to comprehensive performance. The MPI-ESM1-2-LR and MRI-ESM2-0 models were the best two out of 13 models as lateral boundary conditions applied to seven climate scenarios over East Asia. The East Asian subtropical westerly jet (EASWJ) is one of the most crucial subtropical circulation systems affecting the precipitation over East Asia. Based on the ERA5 dataset, the dominant modes of the intraseasonal variability of the EASWJ in early (May and June) and late (July and August) summer are investigated, respectively, through the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. The EOF1 in early summer is characterized by the anomalous westerlies centered over the North China and anomalous easterlies centered over the south of Japan. This mode is led by the south-eastward propagating wave train initiating from the Barents Sea, where the ridge of the wave train coincides with an anomalous warm advection in the low level, due to the negative phase of Arctic Dipole (AD). Since lag − 4 days, the East Asia/Western Ruassia (EAWR) teleconnection contributes to the wave trains. The EOF1 in late summer is characterized by the anomalous westerlies centered over the south of Baikal and anomalous easterlies centered over the Central China, which is affected by the two wave trains along different directions. One wave train propagate zonally across Eurasia initiated from North Atlantic, where significant signal of East Atlantic (EA) teleconnection is found as a precursor. When the wave train disperses downstream to Eurasia, the EAWR play a dominant role on the growth and persistence of the EASWJ variability. The other one is similar to the East Asia–Pacific (EAP) teleconnection propagating poleward from the Southern Asia and Western North Pacific, where the active convection anomalies may be a key driver. The intraseasonal wave trains that influence the EASWJ are different between early and late summer probably due to the discrepancies of background status, such as the background temperature gradient and the curviness of the jet climatology. Using multisource sea ice fusion data, the spatiotemporal characteristics of sea ice cover were analyzed for the marginal seas of East Asia for the period 2005–2021. The results show that there were obvious differences in the beginning and end dates of the sea ice in the different sea areas. The northern Sea of Japan had the longest ice period, and Laizhou Bay and Bohai Bay in the Bohai Sea had the shortest ice period. The time when the largest sea ice extent appeared was relatively stable and mostly concentrated in late January to mid-February. There were obvious spatial differences in the duration of the sea ice cover in the marginal seas of East Asia. The duration of the sea ice cover gradually decreased from high latitude to low latitude and from nearshore to open seas. The annual average duration of the sea ice cover was more than 100 days in most of the Sea of Japan and approximately 20 days in most of Laizhou Bay and Bohai Bay. The melting speed was significantly faster than the freezing speed in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea, resulting in asymmetric changes in the daily sea ice extent in the two seas. The increasing trends in the maximum sea ice extent and total sea ice extent were 0.912 × 105 km2/10 yr and 0.722 × 107 km2/10 yr, respectively, from 2005 to 2013, both of which passed the significance test at the 0.05 level. Based on the 18 realizations of three state-of-the-art climate models participated in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6), this paper examines the changes in climatology and trends of winter diurnal temperature range (DTR) over East Asia in response to natural and anthropogenic forcings. In the observation, the climatology of DTR during 1979–2014 displays a horizontal tile from southwest to northeast over East Asia. In addition, the observed DTR also presents an obviously declining trend in recent decades, with the magnitude of roughly −0.10 °C decade−1. The historical all-forcing simulations well reproduce the geographical distributions and magnitude of climatology and trends of winter DTR over East Asia in 1979–2014. Furthermore, the winter DTR exhibits a continuous declining trend from the historical scenario to the future SSP245 scenario over East Asia, with the most significant declining during the first half of twenty-first century (i.e., 2021–2060). Based on the individual forcing experiments, it suggests that the greenhouse gases forcing plays a primary role in driving the climatology and trends of DTR over East Asia, especially for the SSP245 scenario. Highlights from the article: Moreover, a number of studies in recent years have drawn attention to the increasing intensity of heavy rainfall events, heat waves, and severe droughts in monsoon regions. It is imperative that scientists who study monsoon circulations improve the prediction of their start date or onset, the monsoon intensity, and how these variables respond to climate change. The 16 papers in this volume cover several regional monsoons including East Asia, South Asia and the South China Sea, Australian monsoon, and African Monsoon.

Previous studies have projected an increase in future summer precipitation across East Asia (EA). This study investigates the relative contributions of thermodynamic and dynamic components to future precipitation changes in three key sub-regions of EA where the maximum centers of the historical precipitation are located (the tropical region, East China, and the Japan and Korea sector), and analyzes the causes of the changes in thermodynamic and dynamic components. Outputs from 30 climate models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) are used. From these, the five best-performing models for historical summer precipitation climatology for EA are selected. The future summer precipitations in the three sub-regions over the near- to mid-term (2020–2069) and the long-term (2070–2095) are then examined using the multi-model ensemble mean of the five models selected (MMM05). The projections were driven by four combined scenarios of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) and forcing levels of the Representative Concentration Pathways (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5). The results show that long-term precipitations under SSP5-8.5 are greater than those under the other scenarios across all sub-regions. After the 2070s under SSP5-8.5, a marked precipitation intensification is identified in all three sub-regions, but with different rates of increase. The projected precipitation increase is primarily attributed to the thermodynamic component, while the dynamic component related to circulation changes is relatively weak. Further analysis indicates that the pattern of the thermodynamic component in the three sub-regions is dominated by the climatological upward motion, mediated by an increase in moisture. Aerosol vertical distribution generally determines their health impacts and climate effects. By using long‐term (2007–2019) CALIPSO lidar measurements, we present a large‐scale insight into the climatology of aerosol types and their vertical structure over East Asia. Despite the low sampling frequency, comparison with MODIS aerosol optical depth (AOD) shows that the integrated CAIPSO vertical extinction can reasonably reproduce spatial patterns of the aerosol loading. With the unique advantage of active detection, CALIPSO reveals an obvious enhancement of the night‐time AOD due to worse diffusion conditions. Moreover, long‐range transport of different aerosols including dust, polluted dust, and smoke has substantial contribution to the aerosol loading over East Asia. Pure dust particles are mainly concentrated over the deserts with notable dust transport belts (dust AOD > 0.2 at 532 nm) along downwind regions during winter and spring. By contrast, polluted dust is prevalent over the downstream eastern China with much higher AODs throughout the year. In particular, AOD of polluted dust (~0.5) is higher in winter rather than in spring, which is consistent with their seasonal occurrences. Smoke aerosols usually appear in the night‐time over southern China. The top heights of aerosols are around 4–6 km, with dust and smoke having higher extinction at upstream regions. The evolution of hydroclimate in East Asia during the Pliocene—a potential analog of the future greenhouse climate—remains highly uncertain. Here we reconstruct changes in the hydroclimate of Northern China during this epoch. Our results reveal previously undocumented severe drought conditions that persisted through the early Pliocene with a significantly greater magnitude than suggested by other records. Using a broad hierarchy of climate simulations, we find that reduction in the Pacific meridional sea surface temperature (SST) gradient has particularly strong impacts on precipitation over Northern China, which suggests its key role in maintaining drought conditions during the early Pliocene. The weaker Pacific meridional SST gradient causes the weakening of the East Asian summer monsoon precipitation over this region via a reduction of atmospheric northward moisture transport from the ocean, which enhances aridity inland. Our results highlight the fundamental control of the tropical ocean on the extra‐tropical hydrological cycle. The Pliocene epoch provides a potential analog to the future greenhouse climate. Here, for the first time we reconstruct high‐resolution aridity changes over the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) in northern East Asia during the Pliocene. Our results indicate persistent drought conditions over CLP during the early Pliocene. Analyzing a broad range of climate model simulations, we find that the reduced meridional sea surface temperature gradient is a critical factor in the weakening of the East Asian summer monsoon over Northern China and in maintaining drought conditions during the early Pliocene relative to the late Pliocene. Our results expand the Asian inland paleoclimate records during the Pliocene, providing new information on past Asian monsoon precipitation variations during the warm Pliocene with potential implications for future hydroclimate changes under greenhouse warming in East Asia. This paper investigates the aerosol properties over the major East Asian stations of Beijing, Gosan, Osaka, Taipei, Mukdahan, and Bac-Giang, during the years 2002 - 2008. Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) product from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometers (MODIS) onboard the Aqua and Terra satellites are used for this study. The aerosol robotic network (AERONET) ground observations are used to validate the satellite AOT. The daily, monthly, seasonal, and inter-annual AOT variations over the selected locations are described along with meteorological parameters from National Center for Environmental Prediction, National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP-NCAR) reanalysis data and Global Precipitation Climatology Center (GPCC) data. Angstrom exponent (AE), and fine mode fraction (FMF) from MODIS and AERONET are used to discuss the size, type and possible particle sources. Seasonal wind patterns from NCEP-NCAR reanalysis data are used to confirm particle transport from the source regions around the study area to the chosen stations. The results suggest that the maximum aerosol loading occurs over Beijing with the daily mean AOT reaching above 2.0. Gosan and Taipei are among the stations having the smallest AOT in most seasons with values below 0.5. Dust influence appears to be significant over Beijing, Osaka, and Gosan and to a lesser extent over Bac-Giang in the spring. Pollution, bio-mass burning, etc. contribute in the summer and spring over all stations. The detailed AOT characteristic over Mukdahan and Bac-Giang are reported for the first time. Increases in total and extreme precipitation have been investigated worldwide using limited spatiotemporal data based on surface observations and satellite remote sensing during recent decades. However, it remains unclear whether rain gauge daily precipitation records also show a significant increase in global precipitation. In this study, we first apply the transformed version of the penalized maximum F test ("transPMFred") to homogenize daily precipitation (P) records from 10,629 stations around the world during 1960–2016 from a dataset (GHCN‐CMA) that combines the daily precipitation data from the Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN‐Daily) dataset and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), and then utilize the homogenized data to study the frequency of daily precipitation on a global scale. The results indicate that precipitation frequency exhibited significant increasing trends from 1960 to 2016 across most of the globe, except for East Asia. Moreover, the variability of global precipitation frequency was more pronounced in wet regions than dry regions, especially in North America, Europe and East Asia based multiple daily precipitation datasets. The regional average frequency for moderate (30th < P ≤ 60th percentile), heavy (60th < P ≤ 90th percentile) and very heavy (P > 90th percentile) precipitation increased in North America and Europe. Changes in precipitation frequency decreased for light (P ≤ 30th percentile) and moderate precipitation but increased for heavy and very heavy precipitation, which mainly occurs in dry regions of Australia. Central Asia is one of the most important sources of mineral saline dust worldwide. A comprehensive understanding of Central Asian dust transport is essential for evaluating its impacts on human health, ecological safety, weather and climate. This study first puts forward an observation-based climatology of Central Asian dust transport flux by using the 3-D dust detection of Cloud-Aerosol LiDAR with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP). The seasonal difference of transport flux and downstream contribution are evaluated and compared with those of the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2). Central Asian dust can be transported not only southward in summer under the effect of the South Asian summer monsoon, but also eastward in other seasons under the control of the westerly jet. Additionally, the transport of Central Asian dust across the Pamir Plateau to the Tibetan Plateau is also non-negligible, especially during spring (with a transport flux rate of 150 kg m−1 day−1). The annual CALIOP-based downstream contribution of Central Asian dust to South Asian (164.01 Tg) is 2.1 times that to East Asia (78.36 Tg). This can be attributed to the blocking effect of the higher terrain between Central and East Asia. Additionally, the downstream contributions to South and East Asia from MERRA-2 are only 0.36 and 0.84 times that of CALIOP, respectively. This difference implies the overestimation of the wet and dry depositions of the model, especially in the low latitude zone. The quantification of the Central Asian dust transport allows a better understanding of the Central Asian dust cycle, and supports the calibration/validation of aerosol-related modules of regional and global climate models. Climatology and variability of anticyclonic (AC-type) and cyclonic (C-type) wave breaking in the region of the subtropical jet stream are investigated using the previously developed method for identifying and clustering Rossby wave breaking events. Potential vorticity at an isentropic surface of 350 K from the ERA-Interim and ERA5 reanalyses are used. The results of applying the methods for the two reanalyses are similar. However, there is a high inconsistency for cyclonic wave breaking events, especially in summer. The maximum for both types of wave breaking is registered in summer. There are two main maximum areas for the AC type: Atlantic and Pacific. A specific feature of the C type is the climatic maximum in East Asia, probably due to the summer development of the East Asian monsoon. The intensity of the AC-type wave breaking for the entire Northern Hemisphere during the year demonstrates a positive trend. Seasonal changes of the AC type were also consistent for the two reanalyses, global changes are less consistent for cyclonic wave breakings, and significant trends are basically absent. The regional analysis revealed that the frequency of AC-type wave breaking in summer decreases over the Eastern Atlantic and increases over Europe. The agreed and possibly related changes in the AC and C types are recorded in the Asia-Pacific. In summer, there is a decrease in the C-type occurrence over East Asia and an increase in the AC-type occurrence over the Eastern Pacific. In many East Asia regions, spring (from March to May) precipitation is an important restricting factor to vegetation growth, and atmospheric circulation system may influence spring precipitation patter. It is helpful to under the response of ecosystem to climate change by studying the influence of atmospheric circulation system on the coupling relationship between spring net primary productivity and precipitation. Driving CASA (Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach) NPP (Net Primary Productivity) model, we estimated spring NPP for East Asia area (70°E–1 70°E, 10°N–70°N) from 1982 to 1999, and by the method of singular value decomposition we further analyzed the coupling features of spring NPP with precipitation. The result showed that the response features of NPP to precipitation were mainly embodied within the leading six NPP-precipitation paired-modes. The interpretation rates of the leading six paired-modes to the covariance of NPP-precipitation were 42.91, 23.29, 9.96, 5.60, 5.04 and 3.95%, respectively, and total to 90.75%. The temporal correlation coefficients of the leading six paired-modes were 0.830, 0.889, 0.841, 0.747, 0.912 and 0.923, respectively, and all the correlations were significant at significant level of 0.001. In some high latitude regions, there was no obviously corresponding relationship between NPP and precipitation in the leading two paired-modes, and the reason of it may be that spring temperature was the main restricting factor to NPP. In middle and low latitude regions, the effect of precipitation on NPP was relatively more notable. Nine atmospheric circulation factors in spring affected the patterns of NPP and precipitation greatly, and the regions with interpretation rate over 50% shared 60.41 and 65.58% of the whole study area, respectively. An integrated index which can be used to indicate the advance of subtropical summer monsoon in East Asia has been proposed in this paper. The index was combined by three variables including precipitation, wind and pseudo-equivalent potential temperature. The northernmost summer monsoon location (NSML) was identified by using this index annually. It was found that the NSML experienced an interdecadal shift in the period 1977-1979 based on the annual index analysis from 1961 to 2001. A comparison of the NSML with other four summer monsoon indices has also been made. The result showed that the NSML could well represent the interan- nual and interdecadal variability of summer monsoon precipitation in North Chins (beyond 35°N), while other four indices could well indicate the precipitation anomalies of East Asian summer monsoon along the Yangtze River valley (around 30°N). Temporospatial distribution and trends of thunderstorm, hail, gale, and heavy precipitation events over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) as well as the associated mechanisms with observational data from 1979 to 2016 are investigated, which have not been fully studied under a changing climate. The results indicate that thunderstorm, hail, and gale events over the whole TP show significant decreasing trends, while heavy precipitation events have an insignificant increasing trend. The southeast and central south subregions have obvious significant decreasing trends in thunderstorm, hail, and gale events, while the northeast subregion has a significant increasing trend in heavy precipitation events. It is found that the atmospheric circulation anomaly caused by the northwestern Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) should be responsible for these changes. A strong wave train triggered by the northwestern Atlantic SST anomaly propagates from the northern Atlantic to East Asia through Europe, and induces a more upper-level warming over the TP and an anomalous anticyclonic circulation near the Lake Baikal, resulting in a more stable atmosphere and blocking effect, which forces the midlatitude westerlies and associated cold air to shift poleward. The weakened cold-air advection over the TP decreases the baroclinic instability and convection initiation, and finally causes the significant decreasing trends in severe weather events. On the other hand, the enhanced easterly winds in the southern flank of the anticyclonic circulation can significantly increase the water vapor flux from the eastern boundary of the TP and heavy precipitation events in the northeast subregion. The seasonal prediction skills in the CAMS-CSM (the acronym stands for the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences Climate System Model) climate forecast system is evaluated with a set of retrospective forecast experiments during the period of 1981–2019. The CAMS-CSM, which has been registered for the sixth phase of the coupled model intercomparison project (CMIP6), is an atmosphere–ocean–land–sea ice fully coupled general circulation model. The assimilation scheme used in the forecast system is the 3-dimentional nudging, including both the atmospheric and oceanic components. The analyses mainly focus on the seasonal predictable skill of sea surface temperature, 2-m air temperature, and precipitation anomalies. The analyses revealed that the model shows a good prediction skill for the SST anomalies, especially in the tropical Pacific, in association with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. The anomaly correlation coefficient (ACC) score for ENSO can reach 0.75 at 6-month lead time. Furthermore, the extreme warm/cold Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) events are successfully predicted at 3- and even 6-month lead times. The whole ACC of IOD events between the observation and the prediction can reach 0.51 at 2-month lead time. There are reliable seasonal prediction skills for 2-m air temperature anomalies over most of the Northern Hemisphere, where the correlation is mainly above 0.4 at 2-month lead time, especially over the East Asia, North America and South America. However, the seasonal prediction for precipitation still faces a big challenge. The source of precipitation predictability over the East Asia can be partly related to strong ENSO events. Additionally, the anomalous anticyclone over the western North Pacific (WPAC) which connects the ENSO events and the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) can be well predicted at 6-month lead time. This study evaluates the precipitation over East Asia simulated by the variable resolution CAM‐MPAS featuring the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) atmospheric dynamical core coupled with the physics parameterizations of the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM) version 5.4. Two CAM‐MPAS experiments, one with a global quasi‐uniform resolution mesh of 120 km (MPAS‐UR) and the other with a variable resolution mesh of 30–120 km refined over East Asia (MPAS‐VR), are conducted from 1989 to 2005 following the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project protocol. Two regional climate model simulations at ∼25 km resolution from the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment East Asia second plan are also analyzed for comparison. Results show that CAM‐MPAS performs better than the selected regional models in simulating the precipitation climatology over East Asia. Compared with MPAS‐UR, MPAS‐VR with refinement over East Asia better simulates the precipitation over and around the Tibetan Plateau (TP), the upper‐level circulation, the precipitation frequency and intensity in various regions of China, and the interannual precipitation pattern associated with the East Asian summer monsoon. Both decreased grid spacing and the use of finer‐scale terrain information contribute to the improvements in MPAS‐VR relative to MPAS‐UR. However, decreased grid spacing is more essential for simulating the precipitation magnitude over TP and the location of peak precipitation south of TP, likely due to the better resolved physical and dynamical processes associated with orographic precipitation. The 30–120 km CAM‐MPAS model is shown to be a promising tool for precipitation simulation over East Asia. Plain Language Summary: Precipitation and associated cloud and radiation processes can affect the energy budgets and water supply over land and thus the livelihoods of billions of people over East Asia. However, traditional low‐resolution global climate models still have difficulty in realistically simulating the mean‐state and variability of precipitation over East Asia, partly due to their insufficient resolution to resolve the complex terrain and associated synoptic‐scale systems. In this work, we perform model experiments using the Community Atmosphere Model coupled with the atmospheric dynamical core from the Model for Prediction Across Scales with a variable resolution mesh to assess the impact of regional refinement on the precipitation simulation over East Asia. Experiment with higher resolution (30 vs. 120 km) over East Asia better simulates the total precipitation amount over and around the Tibetan Plateau (TP), as well as precipitation frequency, intensity, and interannual variability associated with the East Asian summer monsoon. The finer grid spacing is found to contribute more to the improvements in areas adjacent to TP than the use of finer terrain information, likely due to better resolved physical and dynamical processes associated with orographic precipitation. Ensembles of climate change projections created by general circulation models (GCMs) with high resolution are increasingly needed to develop adaptation strategies for regional climate change. The Meteorological Research Institute atmospheric GCM version 3.2 (MRI-AGCM3.2), which is listed in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5), has been typically run with resolutions of 60 km and 20 km. Ensembles of MRI-AGCM3.2 consist of members with multiple cumulus convection schemes and different patterns of future sea surface temperature, and are utilized together with their downscaled data; however, the limited size of the high-resolution ensemble may lead to undesirable biases and uncertainty in future climate projections that will limit its appropriateness and effectiveness for studies on climate change and impact assessments. In this study, to develop a comprehensive understanding of the regional precipitation simulated with MRI-AGCM3.2, we investigate how well MRI-AGCM3.2 simulates the present-day regional precipitation around the globe and compare the uncertainty in future precipitation changes and the change projection itself between MRI-AGCM3.2 and the CMIP5 multiple atmosphere–ocean coupled GCM (AOGCM) ensemble. MRI-AGCM3.2 reduces the bias of the regional mean precipitation obtained with the high-performing CMIP5 models, with a reduction of approximately 20% in the bias over the Tibetan Plateau through East Asia and Australia. When 26 global land regions are considered, MRI-AGCM3.2 simulates the spatial pattern and the regional mean realistically in more regions than the individual CMIP5 models. As for the future projections, in 20 of the 26 regions, the sign of annual precipitation change is identical between the 50th percentiles of the MRI-AGCM3.2 ensemble and the CMIP5 multi-model ensemble. In the other six regions around the tropical South Pacific, the differences in modeling with and without atmosphere–ocean coupling may affect the projections. The uncertainty in future changes in annual precipitation from MRI-AGCM3.2 partially overlaps the maximum–minimum uncertainty range from the full ensemble of the CMIP5 models in all regions. Moreover, on average over individual regions, the projections from MRI-AGCM3.2 spread over roughly 0.8 of the uncertainty range from the high-performing CMIP5 models compared to 0.4 of the range of the full ensemble. Atmospheric black carbon (BC) in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) can largely impact regional and global climate. Still, studies on the inter-annual variation in atmospheric BC over the TP and associated variation in BC sources and controlling factors are rather limited. In this study, we characterize the variations in atmospheric BC over the TP surface layer through analysis of 20-year (1995–2014) simulations from a global chemical transport model, GEOS-Chem. The results show that surface BC concentrations over the TP vary largely in space and by season, reflecting complicated interplays of BC sources from different origins. Of all areas in the TP, surface BC concentrations are highest over the eastern and southern TP, where surface BC is susceptible to BC transport from East Asia and South Asia, respectively. Applying a backward-trajectory method that combines BC concentrations from GEOS-Chem and trajectories from the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model, we assess the contributions of worldwide source regions to surface BC in the TP. We estimate that on the 20-year average, 77 % of surface BC in the TP comes from South Asia (43 %) and East Asia (35 %). Regarding seasonal variation in non-local influences, South Asia and East Asia are dominant source regions in winter and summer, respectively, in terms of the amount of BC imported. However, in terms of affected areas in the TP, South Asia is the dominant contributor throughout the year. Inter-annually, surface BC over the TP is largely modulated by atmospheric transport of BC from non-local regions year-round and by biomass burning in South Asia, mostly in spring. We find that the extremely strong biomass burning in South Asia in the spring of 1999 greatly enhanced surface BC concentrations in the TP (31 % relative to the climatology). We find that the strength of the Asian monsoon correlates significantly with the inter-annual variation in the amount of BC transported to the TP from non-local regions. In summer, a stronger East Asian summer monsoon and a stronger South Asian summer monsoon tend to, respectively, lead to more BC transport from central China and north-eastern South Asia to the TP. In winter, BC transport from central China is enhanced in years with a strong East Asian winter monsoon or a strong Siberian High. A stronger Siberian High can also bring more BC from northern South Asia to the TP. This study underscores the impacts of atmospheric transport and biomass burning on the inter-annual variation in surface BC over the TP. Westerlies‐dominated arid central Asia (ACA) has a very fragile ecological environment that highly depends on the available moisture sources. However, the moisture history of this region during the Holocene has been a controversial topic for several decades. Here, we performed optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating and grain‐size analysis of aeolian sediments from the eastern Balikun Basin. Our results demonstrated that the early Holocene climate in the Balikun Basin was dry (before ~6.5 ka) and then became wetter during the mid–late Holocene. This Holocene climate pattern correlates well with other climatic inferences from various proxies acquired at various ACA locations, further supporting an earlier view that the Holocene climate in ACA was out of phase with that of the East Asia summer monsoon. Furthermore, an extremely dry event at 4.3–2.6 ka correlated well with pollen records and a decrease of ~4°C in temperature in the western Balikun Lake, but this event was not evident in other ACA regions. Finally, Mingsha Shan Sand Dunes in the eastern Balikun Basin initially accumulated in the earliest Holocene. We suggest that the early Holocene dry climate in the ACA region and the local geomorphology are responsible for the formation of the Mingsha Shan Sand Dunes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Silk Road pattern (SRP) is a well-known teleconnection pattern along the upper-level westerly jet over the Eurasian continent during boreal summer. The SRP has experienced an interdecadal change around the late 1970s. The present study identified a new change of the SRP around the late 1990s, which is characterized by significant weakening and zonal phase shift of the major centers of the SRP during the recent decades. The recent reshaping of the SRP is attributed to an enhanced impact of precipitation anomalies over the northeastern Indian summer monsoon (ISM), which is associated with the leading mode change of the ISM precipitation anomalies around the late 1990s. The interdecadal weakening of the upper-level westerly jet over central and East Asia also favors the southward movement of the SRP during recent periods. The differences of the features, climate impact, and causes related to the recent SRP change from those related to the SRP change around the late 1970s are also contrasted in this study. Speleothem oxygen isotope records over East Asia reveal apparently large and rapid paleoclimate changes over the last several hundred thousand years. However, what the isotopic variation actually represent in terms of the regional climate and circulation is debated. We present an answer that emerges from an analysis of the interannual variation in amount-weighted annual δ18O of precipitation over East Asia as simulated by an isotope-enabled model constrained by large-scale atmospheric reanalysis fields. 18O-enriched years have reduced summer seasonality both in terms of precipitation isotopes and in the large-scale circulation. Changes occur between June and October, where the δ18O of precipitation (δ18Op) transitions from the isotopically heavier winter to the lighter summer regime. For 18O-enriched years, this transition is less pronounced. Variations in precipitation amount alone are insufficient to explain the amount-weighted annual δ18Op between 18O-enriched and 18O-depleted years. Reduced summer seasonality is also expressed in the low-level monsoonal southerlies and upper-level westerlies; for the latter, the northward migration across the Tibetan Plateau in the summer is less pronounced. Our result thus implicates the westerlies across the plateau as the proximate cause of East Asian paleomonsoon changes, manifested as a modulation of its summer peak. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the applicability of five cumulus parameterization schemes (CPSs) for precipitation simulation in East Asia with the atmospheric model ECHAM6.3. Besides the built-in Tiedtke–Nordeng–Tiedtke (TNT) scheme, four updated schemes are implemented in ECHAM6.3: two modified Tiedtke schemes, the simplified Arakawa–Schubert scheme (SAS), and the Betts–Miller–Janjić scheme (BMJ). An overall assessment of seasonal climatology shows that the SAS and the two modified Tiedtke schemes have clear advantages over the default TNT scheme. The spatial pattern of precipitation climatology and seasonal variations are successfully reproduced by all CPSs. Biases of rainfall distribution are strongly modulated by the simulation of atmospheric circulation systems over East Asia. The main characteristics of summer monsoonal precipitation, including the increase in rainfall and rain belt migration under the influence of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM), are successfully captured. However, there are large model diversities in the location and intensity of rain centers around Southeast China and the Korean Peninsula. In addition, all simulations of Meiyu rain band migration are farther north than observed. The SAS scheme is the best of the five CPSs in simulating the timing and intensity of seasonal rainfall variations. The results also suggest that the environmental feedback of a CPS is a key factor that determines the applicability of the CPS in a particular climate model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The last few years have seen a surge of scholarly interest in how cultures have been influenced by climate, climatic changes, and extremes of weather. This "cultural turn" of climate history draws from the archives of society, rather than the archives of nature, and is heavily influenced by interpretative and methodological frameworks drawn from the humanities fields. Attention has been largely focused on European contexts and cultures. This article aims to show, however, that the climate history of Asia is on the cusp of developing its own strong cultural turn and that strong foundations and precedents have already been set. This article has two main objectives. The first is to explore approaches in the history of the climate in East Asia that claim to investigate interactions between climatic changes or extreme events and society and culture. Many of these are macro studies, comparing climatic changes with dramatic events in history. Then, it will take a closer look at scholarship that has focused closely on the ideas and beliefs that characterize a society, showing how regional customs and philosophical systems have developed in relation to weather. It will argue that better integration between the two approaches is needed if we are to fully grasp the interdependence of people and climate, a question that becomes ever more critical as we move further into the Anthropocene. Previous studies have suggested that boreal spring Northern Atlantic Oscillations (NAOs) exert a pronounced influence on the following East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) variability. This study reveals that the relationship between the spring NAO and the following EASM varies with the 11-year solar cycle. The analysis of the time–lag relationship between the NAO in May and the following summer rainfall indicates that during the low solar activity (LS) summers, a more robust relationship is established, with below-normal rainfall anomalies in South China and the Sunda Islands in relation to a positive NAO. In addition, the May NAO-related atmospheric circulation anomalies during boreal summer over East and Southeast Asia may well explain the distinct rainfall difference. The possible mechanism for this solar modulation is attributed to the changes in structure of the spring NAO and associated tripole SST anomalies in the North Atlantic. Specifically, in the LS phase, the North Atlantic tripole SST anomalies associated with the May NAO can strongly develop and persist into the early summer. These SST anomalies tend to induce a remarkable subpolar wave train across the northern Eurasian continent and an enhanced East Asian jet in the summer. Our results indicate that, for the summer climate prediction over East and Southeast Asia, both the spring NAO and the 11-year solar cycle should be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The distinctive monsoon climate over East Asia, which is affected by the vast Eurasian continent and Pacific Ocean basin and the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau, provides arguably the best testbed for evaluating the competence of Earth system climate models. Here, a set of diagnostic metrics, consisting of 14 items and 7 variables, is specifically developed. This physically intuitive set of metrics focuses on the essential features of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM), and includes fields that depict the climatology, the major modes of variability, and unique characteristics of the EASM. The metrics are applied to multimodel historical simulations derived from 20 models that participated in phases 3 and 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP3 and CMIP5, respectively), along with the newly developed Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology Earth System Model, version 3. The CMIP5 models show significant improvements over the CMIP3 models in terms of the simulated East Asian monsoon circulation systems on a regional scale, major modes of EAWM variability, the monsoon domain and precipitation intensity, and teleconnection associated with the heat source over the Philippine Sea. Clear deficiencies persist from CMIP3 to CMIP5 with respect to capturing the major modes of EASM variability, as well as the relationship between the EASM and ENSO during El Niño developing and decay phases. The possible origins that affect models' performance are also discussed. The metrics provide a tool for evaluating the performance of Earth system climate models, and facilitating the assessment of past and projected future changes of the East Asian monsoon. Convection-permitting regional climate models have been shown to improve precipitation simulation in many aspects, such as the diurnal cycle, precipitation frequency, intensity and extremes in many studies over several geographical regions of the world, but their skill in reproducing the warm-season precipitation characteristics over the East Asia has not been robustly tested yet. Motivated by recent advances in computing power, model physics and high-resolution reanalysis, we use the convection-permitting weather research and forecasting (WRF) model configured with 3 km grid spacing to simulate the warm-season precipitation in eastern China for 10 seasons (2008–2017). The hourly 31-km-resolution ERA5 reanalysis data are used to provide initial and boundary conditions for the simulations. The objectives are (1) to evaluate the model skill in simulating warm-season precipitation climatology in the East Asian monsoon region, (2) to identify the promises and problems of the convection-permitting simulation, and (3) to investigate solutions for the model deficiencies. Results demonstrate that the 3-km-resolution WRF model reasonably reproduces the spatial characteristics of seasonal and sub-seasonal precipitation, the seasonal meridional migration associated with the summer monsoon activity, the diurnal variation phase and amplitude, and the propagating convection east of the Tibetan Plateau. The major deficiency is that the model overestimates precipitation amount, especially in the afternoon. Analysis and sensitivity experiments suggest that improved treatment of sub-grid cloud fraction and the aerosol effects may help to suppress the oft-reported high precipitation bias. Atmospheric CO2 and anthropogenic aerosols (AA) have increased simultaneously. Because of their opposite radiative effects, these increases may offset each other, which may lead to some nonlinear effects. Here the seasonal and regional characteristics of this nonlinear effect from the CO2 and AA forcings are investigated using the fully coupled Community Earth System Model. Results show that nonlinear effects are small in the global mean of the top-of-the-atmosphere radiative fluxes, surface air temperature, and precipitation. However, significant nonlinear effects exist over the Arctic and other extratropical regions during certain seasons. When both forcings are included, Arctic sea ice in September–November decreases less than the linear combination of the responses to the individual forcings due to a higher sea ice sensitivity to the CO2-induced warming than the sensitivity to the AA-induced cooling. This leads to less Arctic warming in the combined-forcing experiment due to reduced energy release from the Arctic Ocean to the atmosphere. Some nonlinear effects on precipitation in June–August are found over East Asia, with the northward-shifted East Asian summer rain belt to oppose the CO2 effect. In December–February, the aerosol loading over Europe in the combined-forcing experiment is higher than that due to the AA forcing, resulting from CO2-induced circulation changes. The changed aerosol loading results in regional thermal responses due to aerosol direct and indirect effects, weakening the combined changes of temperature and circulation. This study highlights the need to consider nonlinear effects from historical CO2 and AA forcings in seasonal and regional climate attribution analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extratropical cyclones (ETCs) in East Asia are automatically detected and tracked by applying a Lagrangian tracking algorithm to the 850-hPa relative vorticity field. The ETC statistics, which are derived from ERA-Interim reanalysis dataset from 1979 to 2017, show that East Asian ETCs primarily form over Mongolia, East China, and the Kuroshio Current region with a maximum frequency of six to seven cyclones per month. Both Mongolia and East China ETCs are initiated on the leeward side of the mountains. While Mongolia ETCs downstream of the Altai–Sayan Mountains develop slowly, East China ETCs downstream of the Tibetan plateau develop rapidly as they travel across the warm ocean. Both of them show a maximum frequency and intensity in spring rather than in winter. In contrast, oceanic ETCs across the Kuroshio Current and the Kuroshio–Oyashio Extension, where sea surface temperature gradient is sharp, reach a maximum frequency in winter although their intensity is still maximum in spring. On the decadal timescale, both ETC frequency and intensity exhibit insignificant trends. Exceptions are springtime East China and summertime Mongolia ETCs whose frequencies have slightly decreased since 1979.
