In coal mines, the effective extraction of relief gas and the prevention of dynamic disasters depend on accurate predictions of the spatial distribution of mining stress in the overlying rock. However, at present, the prediction of stress relief and concentration zones based on operational experience or empirical modeling differs significantly from actual measurements in the field. The fundamental problem is the difficulty in modeling the transfer mechanism of the mining overburden load under the influence of key strata. In this study, a mechanical model of the spatial distribution of the mining stress field based on the structure of overburden key strata was established. The model demonstrates that the key strata are the main bearing bodies of the overlying rock, both before and after the fracture, and the overburden rock load can be transferred to the coal and rock mass around the stope through the key strata in the fracture and bending subsidence zones, thus forming a mining stress field. Equations for calculating the plane distributions of mining stress under the key strata at different horizons and abutment pressures on the stope were established, and a spatial distribution prediction method for the mining stress field based on the overburden key strata structure was proposed. The study area was the Gaojiapu Coal Mine, where it was found that the key stratum of the 400.45 m thick Luohe Formation sandstone bore most of the overlying rock load and transferred the load to the coal and rock mass around the stope. This load distribution is the root cause of a high concentration and wide influence range of mining stresses, leading to serious deformation of the main roadway and frequent dynamic disasters. The internal overburden movement after coal mining may cause many disasters to the on-site production. It is of great guiding significance for the engineering treatment such as separation layer grouting and gas extraction to master the evolution law of separation layer and fracture in the overburden. Combined with the full-columnar overburden of a certain working face, this study established a number of models using 3DEC simulation software and analyzed the influence of different mining heights and widths on the distribution law of separation layer and fracture after strata movement. The simulation results show that the evolution of separation layer in the overburden after mining roughly consists of three stages, namely, initial generation, reaching peak, and tending to close (stable). The development of the separation layer is positively correlated with the mining height and negatively correlated with the mining width. When the mining height increases from 3 m to 5 m, the peak value of cumulative separation increases from 0.7 m to 2.1 m. On the contrary, when the mining width increases from 250 m to 350 m, the peak value of cumulative separation decreases from 2.8 m to 1.1 m. The pre-bearing stress concentration will be formed in the mining process of the working face. The influence of mining width change on the peak of stress concentration is greater than that of mining height change, and the subsidence is mainly affected by mining height. A quantitative analysis method of water-flowing fracture development height was developed by using the penetration height of joint shear displacement. The calculated fracture zone height 117.33 m was in good agreement with the actual measured results 120 m, verifying the validity of this method. This paper analyzes the influence of the overlying extremely thick primary key stratum on the strong mine pressure hazard at the large mining face in Gaojiapu coal mine. The analysis of the distribution characteristics of the primary key stratum in the Gaojiapu coal mine reveals the bow-shaped structural characteristics of the overlying thick primary key stratum. An elastodynamic model was developed using the variational method to calculate and analyze the influence of the movement of the primary key stratum on the stress and energy of the underlying weak rock. The results show that the arch structure of the overlying extremely thick primary key stratum can significantly affect the distribution pattern of stress and strain energy in the coal body, and the stress and strain energy in the coal body are transferred to the middle of the coal column, and the middle region of the coal column enters a high stress state. These results suggest that the change in thickness of the overlying primary key stratum at Gaojiapu in the coal column area is a major factor in the frequent occurrence of impact ground pressure events at the mine. This study explains the causes of frequent impact ground pressure in the lower coal rock mass of the extremely thick primary key stratum, and provides a reference for the prevention and control of impact hazards in the extremely thick primary key stratum. The deformation and movement characteristics of high-level key stratums in overlying strata are important for estimating ground subsidence and understanding failure characteristics of ultrathick strata during mining. In this study, a distributed optical fiber sensor (DOFS) and multipoint borehole extensometers (MPBXs) were collaboratively employed to monitor the deformation of high-level key stratums in situ during the mining process at working face 130,604 of the Maiduoshan Coal Mine. DOFS monitoring results showed that the distance from advance influence of mining on the ground surface is 219.2 m. The deformation of the shallow stratums were greater and was affected earlier than that of the deep stratums. The deformation in the strata did not occur continuously and the boundary curve of the impact from advance mining was not a straight line with the advancement of the working face. By the MPBX technology, we measured the strata movement and obtained four-stage characteristics of high-level key stratum movement. The subsidence of the primary key stratum and the sub key stratum were monitored to reach 1389 and 1437 mm; their final relative displacement differed by 48 mm. No bed separation was observed in between the strata, and the key stratums tended to sink as a whole with the advancement of the working face. Owing to alternate mining of the new and old mining areas on sites, the mining thickness and width of the working face for pier-column backfilling varies. Thus, there is an urgent need to determine the impact on the bearing performance of the backfilled pier-column after changing the mined dimensions. This study consisted of three-dimensional numerical simulations, physical experiments, and field testing. These methods were performed to study the impact on the stability of the backfilled pier-column after changing the dimensions of the working face. The numerical and physical simulation results revealed that the mining thickness has a greater impact on the stability of the backfilled pier-columns than the width. Field testing results proved that the designed parameters for the backfilled pier-column in situ satisfy the bearing requirements; thus, it can effectively support the overlying strata of the goaf after mining. When increasing the mining thickness, the stress borne by the pier-column increased, and its stability decreased. Upon increasing the mining width, the variation in the stress exerted onto the pier-column was remarkably small, and the change of the elastoplastic zone of the pier-column was also minimal. Longwall pier-column backfilling is a partial backfilling technique initially designed in thin coal seam mines. With the increase of mining intensity, the mining height and width of the backfilling working face will also increase. It is necessary to analyze how changes in working face dimensions influence the control effect of overburden subsidence in pier-column backfilling. In this study, a mining model with a combination of 25 conditions (five different mining heights (1~3 m) × five different mining widths (80~240 m)) was designed using a FLAC3D (Vision 5.0) numerical simulation. The simulation was used to analyze the control effect of overburden subsidence with varying mining heights and widths. In addition, according to the field working face conditions, two physical similarity models were performed to explore the overburden subsidence law in pier-column backfilling with different mining heights and widths. It was observed from the above study that mining heights and widths will have a different influence on the overburden subsidence in longwall pier-column backfilling. There is a layer of the unconsolidated confined aquifer (UCA) made of non-cemented sand and grit on the bed of Quaternary thick topsoil in many coal mines in east and north China. Existing on the bedrock of coal measures, it poses a serious threat to coal mine safety. Worse, it caused many supports crushing and water inrush disasters (SCWIDs) and resulted in significant economic losses. Aiming at the above problems, this paper adopts a simulation experiment, field measurement, engineering detection, and theoretical analysis to conduct the research. The research reveals the overburden's destructive rules during mining under UCA. The results indicate that UCA plays an important role in the process of load transfer due to its mobility and replenishment in time. When mining close to the aquifer, the load transfer of aquifer leads to overburden breaking entirely and sliding instability of the bond-beam structure, then, the water flowing fractured zone develops rapidly and connects the aquifer, which is the fundamental reason for SCWID under the UCA. Based on the mechanism of SCWID, a prediction method of support crushing and water inrush hazard zones was put forward. Artificial pre-split blasting based on the location of a key stratum was applied to prevent SCWID. The proposed methods have been used in 7131 working face and safe mining was achieved. Overburden key strata (KS) have a significant influence on abutment pressure distribution. However, current calculation methods for working surface abutment pressure do not consider the influence of the overburden KS. This study uses KS theory to analyze the overburden load transferred to coal-rock masses on both sides of the stope through fractured blocks in different layers of the KS in the fissure zone and KS in different layers of the curve subsidence zone. Using Winkler's elastic foundation beam theory, we consider the fissure zone KS on the coal mass side and the curve subsidence zone KS as many elastic foundation beams interact with each other. A method to calculate the abutment pressure of the coal mass and the goaf was then established, considering the influence of the overburden KS. The abutment pressure distribution of working surface 207 after mining was then calculated using our method, based on mining conditions present in the Tingnan coal mine. The calculated results were verified using measurements from borehole stress meters and microseismic monitoring systems, as well as numerical simulations. In addition, the calculation results were used to determine a reasonable position for the stopping line and remaining width of the roadway's protection coal pillar in working surface 207. The results of this study can be used to calculate the abutment pressure distribution of the working surface under a variety of overburden KS conditions. The results can also provide guidance for forecasting and preventing mine dynamic hazards, controlling the surrounding rock in mining roadways, determining reasonable widths for protection coal pillars, and designing the layout of mining roadways. Overburden conditions consisting of ultrathick and hard stratum (UTHS) are widespread in China and other countries, but existing surface subsidence prediction methods ignore the strong impact of UTHS on surface subsidence. They are thus not applicable for surface subsidence prediction for coal mining with the presence of UTHS. We conducted actual measurements of surface and UTHS subsidence in the Tingnan Coal Mine. The results showed that under the UTHS mining condition, the required gob dimension is much larger than the empirical value when the surface reaches sufficient mining and that the actual measured maximum value of surface subsidence is much smaller than the empirical value. The UTHS subsidence is approximately equal to the surface subsidence. The movement of UTHS has a strong impact on surface subsidence and has a controlling function for it. It was proposed that surface subsidence could be approximately predicted by calculating the UTHS subsidence. The UTHS movement characteristics were studied using Winkler's theory of beams on an elastic foundation, the subsidence prediction equation of the main sections in the strike and dip directions was obtained under different mining dimensions, and the subsidence prediction equation of any arbitrary cross section parallel to the two main sections was established. Then, the surface subsidence prediction method for coal mining with the presence of UTHS was developed, and the influences of UTHS thickness, strength, and layer position on the surface subsidence were discussed. The Tingnan Coal Mine was taken as an example, and the subsidence curves of the strike and dip main sections were calculated using different mining dimensions. Subsequently, the surface subsidence after the mining of working faces 204, 205, 206, and 207, respectively, was predicted, and the prediction method was verified by comparing the results with the measured surface subsidence results of working faces 204, 205, and 206. Water outbursts and rock bursts often occur during the mining of coal seams under water-rich sandstone strata with thicknesses exceeding 50 m, otherwise called ultrathick-and-hard strata (UTHS), which are common throughout the mining areas of northwestern China. It is important to understand the behaviors of their movement and the evolution of their internal fractures to inform the formulation of effective disaster prevention. Due to the presence of the Luohe Formation UTHS in the overburden of the Tingnan Coal Mine in the Binchang mining area and the powerful mining-induced pressure (MIP) events that occurred during the excavation of Panel #2, the internal strata movement of the overburden and the evolution of its fractures were monitored in situ by fiber optic and multipoint borehole extensometers (MPBX) during the excavation of Working Face #207. It was found that a large number of ring-shaped fractures were observed at 24.8–81 m above the lower boundary of the Luohe Formation—in areas above the goaf of Working Face #206—before Working Face #207 was mined. When Working Face #207 was mined, the fractures that were originally located in the deep strata of the Luohe Formation started to close and migrate towards shallow strata. Crack closure and migration were also observed during the monitoring of internal strata movement. Furthermore, the final displacements of Y1-1-1#, Y1-2-2#, and Y1-2-3# relative to the surface were 77, 248, and 134 mm, which were very small relative to the surface subsidence of 1380 mm. It was found that mining-induced perturbations caused the Luohe Formation UTHS to subside continuously and no risk of a large and sudden break would occur in the Luohe Formation UTHS during the mining of Working Face #207. The results of this study provide important data for the safety of mining operations at Working Face #207, which were validated by microseismic monitoring during the mining of it.
