Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) has grown rapidly in China since its introduction in 1979, showing the trend of alien species invasion, which has seriously affected the ecosystem balance of coastal wetlands. The temporal and spatial expansion law of S. alterniflora can be obtained through remote sensing monitoring, which can provide a reference and basis for S. alterniflora management. This paper presents a method for extracting and mapping S. alterniflora based on phenological characteristics. The coastal areas of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration are selected as the research area, and the Landsat time series data from 1990 to 2022 on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform are used to support the experiment in this paper. Firstly, the possible growing area of S. alterniflora was extracted using the normalized differential moisture index (NDMI), normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI), and normalized differential water index (NDWI); Then, the time series curve characterizing the phenological characteristics of vegetation was constructed using the vegetation index to determine the difference phase of phenological characteristics between S. alterniflora and other vegetation. Finally, a decision tree was constructed based on the phenological feature difference phase data to extract S. alterniflora, and it is applied to the analysis of temporal and spatial changes of S. alterniflora in the study area from 1990 to 2022. The results show that the area of S. alterniflora increased from ~1426 ha in 1990 to ~44,508 ha in 2022. However, the area of S. alterniflora began to show negative growth in 2015 due to the construction of nature reserves and ecological management. The results of correlation analysis showed that the growth of C. japonicum was significantly affected by temperature stress and weakly affected by precipitation. This study verified that Landsat time series images can effectively extract vegetation phenological information, which has strong feasibility for extraction and dynamic monitoring of S. alterniflora and provides technical support for the management and monitoring of invasive plants in coastal wetlands. The extensive accumulation of big data, along with the development of a high-performance platform, bridge the gap between the previous inability to provide long-term time series and broad-scale coastal zone monitoring and risk warnings with remote sensing techniques. Based on 20 years of Landsat images from the Google Earth Engine platform, the time series land cover in the coastal zone of the Yangtze River Delta in China was classified. Then, a spatiotemporal clustering method based on grid segmentation was proposed to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution details of artificial surface expansion and the risks of cropland loss and ecological degradation caused by this. The results showed that significant changes have taken place in the quantitative structure and spatial morphology of coastal land use in the past 20 years. The artificial surface maintained a growth trend, increasing by 229%, while cropland decreased by 19%. Natural land showed a fluctuation pattern of "up→down→up". The spatiotemporal details of land use obtained through 1km grid segmentation and clustering analysis were more significant. The artificial surface mainly underwent a progressive spatial expansion along the central urban area and important transportation axes (types III and IV), with the most dramatic changes occurring from 2010 to 2013. Type III cropland loss was the most significant, falling from 75.02% in 2000 to 38.23% in 2020. At the same time, the change in type III water body corresponds to the newly increased area of reclamation, which has decreased by 17% in the past 20 years, indicating that the degradation of coastal natural wetlands was significant. Mangroves are a key type of protected coastal wetland, with a range of benefits such as protection from wave damage, sand fixation, water purification and ecological tourism. As the academic knowledge of mangroves has gradually increased, the use of remote sensing to monitor their dynamic changes in China has become a hot topic of discussion and has received attention in academic circles. Remote sensing has also provided necessary auxiliary decision-making suggestions and data support for the scientific and rational conservation, restoration and management of mangrove resources. In this paper, we used Landsat satellite series data combined with the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and adaptive threshold partitioning (OTSU method) to monitor mangrove dynamics in coastal China from 1986 to 2021 based on Google Earth Engine (GEE), with three main results. (1) Based on the massive data and efficient computational capability of the GEE platform, we achieved large-scale interannual mangrove distribution extraction. The overall classification accuracy for 2019 exceeded 0.93, and the mangrove distribution extraction effect was good. (2) The total mangrove area and the mean patch size in China showed overall increasing trends, and Guangdong and Guangxi were the top two provinces in China in terms of the largest mangrove area. (3) Except for Dongzhaigang National Nature Reserve, the mangrove areas in other national mangrove reserves mainly showed increasing trends, confirming the effectiveness of the reserves. Data on the spatial structure and area trends of mangroves in China can provide scientific references for mangrove conservation and development, and serve in the further restoration of mangrove ecosystems. In order to study a big data technology research for the evaluation of wetland resource ecosystem value. This paper proposes a wetland dimension oriented to the evaluation of wetland ecosystem services space attribute through big data coupling analysis framework. The framework used China's coastal wetlands as a case for empirical research and summarized the future direction of the research on the value evaluation of wetland ecosystem services in the era of big data. The result shows: Wetland Ecosystem Observation Network can obtain long-term series of dynamic data, remote sensing Earth observation can realize the integrated observation of space, space, and Earth, the combination of the two will help to build a wetland ecological big data observation system. The service value of China's coastal wetland ecosystem is 5010.32 × 108 yuan. In view of the important role of vegetation in the integrity of structures and functions of coastal wetland ecosystems, the restoration of degraded coastal wetland vegetation has attracted increased attention. In this paper, the newborn coastal wetland in the Yellow River Delta (YRD) of China was selected to research the effect of salinity and oil exploitation on the germination of soil seed banks of three dominant vegetation communities. The germination experiment with three concentration gradients of NaCl and three concentration gradients of diesel treatments showed that there were 14 species present in the soil seed bank of the multi-species community: three species in the Phragmites australis community, and five species in the P. australis—Suaeda glauca community. The species in the seed bank of the three communities were much richer than the above-ground vegetation in this study. Soil salinity had a significant inhibitory effect on the seedling numbers of germinated species, the seedling density, and the species diversity of the soil seed banks, while the inhibitory effect of diesel was indistinctive under the designed concentrations. There existed significant interactions between the vegetation community type and soil salinity on the number of germinated species, the seedling density, and the Margalef index. Soil salinity is considered an important factor for wetland vegetation restoration in the YRD, but its effect had species-specific differences. Soil seed banks of the present three communities could be used to promote the restoration of degraded wetlands within certain soil salinity and oil concentration ranges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spartina alterniflora has become one of the top exotic invasive plants in coastal China. Accurate and timely mapping of coastal wetlands is critical to understand the spatiotemporal dynamics of S. alterniflora invasion and native species degradation. Due to the humid weather and frequent cloud cover in coastal wetlands, pixel-based classifications based on time-series satellite observations have been increasingly utilized to mitigate this problem. However, the spatial and temporal variations in valid observations might affect pixel-based classification accuracies, while this issue has been paid little attention in previous research. In this paper, we conducted annual mapping of the Yellow River Delta (YRD) wetland from 2008 to 2019 based on time-series Landsat 5/7/8 images using harmonic regression analysis and random forest classification on Google Earth Engine. We further analysed how valid observations and temporal distribution of observations affected the classification accuracy. Our results showed that the overall classification accuracies ranged from 87.25% in 2012 to 92.36% in 2018. The mapping results showed that S. alterniflora expanded from 39.91 ha to 4672.38 ha from 2008 to 2019, encroaching seagrass beds with 902.32 ha and encroaching S.salsa and bare flat with 3730.15 ha. This is the first time that maps of coastal wetlands of YRD are produced at an annual time step. Our analysis showed that the number of valid observations affected classification accuracies both temporally and spatially. Years with higher density of observations witnessed higher overall accuracies compared to the years with fewer observations. Pixels with more observations had a higher chance to be correctly classified compared to the pixels with fewer observations. Harmonic regression features helped improve classification accuracies (increase in overall accuracies from 0.15% to 3.32%), especially for vegetation types (increase in F-score from 0.19% to 3.86%). Greater number of valid observations enhances the importance of harmonic regression features in classification. The critical months identified were March, July, and October, and the combinations of these months achieved better accuracies (91.24%) than using all other observations (89.68%) in 2018, suggesting that temporal distributions of observations could be more important than the number of observations for harmonic-based classification of coastal wetlands such as YRD. • A SD-PLUS-InVEST model is proposed to simulate the WCS. • Driving-feedback mechanism and effect paths of SEES coupling framework are studied. • The policy balance is analyzed and the contribution to the SDGs is quantified. Wetlands are an important part of the global carbon cycle, and wetland protection is an important way to achieve carbon neutrality and synergistic benefits between humans and ecosystems in China. However, most of the previous studies lack the influencing factors and driving paths of wetland carbon storage (WCS) from the perspective of coupled systems. Based on the SD-PLUS-InVEST coupling model and the socio-economic and ecological sustainability (SEES) coupling framework, this paper reveals the driving-feedback mechanism of wetland areas (WAs) from 2005 to 2060, and realizes the dynamic monitoring of WAs and a detailed assessment of WCS in Dongying city. The results show the following: WAs have a positive feedback relationship with the water resources and ecosystem service (ES) subsystems but a negative feedback relationship with the population and economic subsystems. The business as usual (BAU) scenario led to a malignant transformation of natural wetlands (NWs)-artificial wetlands (AWs)-production land (PL), increasing WCS by expanding AWs. The coordinated sustainable development (CSD) scenario created a virtuous PL-AW-NW transformation, increasing 421,700 tons of WCS compared with BAU. Introduction: This study aims to investigate the impact of human activities on the evolution of coastal wetlands in the Liaohe River Delta. Understanding these impacts is crucial for the management, protection, and sustainable development of the ecological environment in the region. Methods: Quantitative analysis of the evolution of coastal wetlands along the Liaohe River from 1995 to 2020 using Landsat series remote sensing images. This study examines the changes in different landscapes and explores the impact of human activities on wetlands through methods such as land transfer matrix, landscape pattern index, and human activity hotspots. Results: The results show that the area of coastal wetlands in the Liaohe River Delta exhibited a fluctuating downward trend from 1995 to 2020. The eastern and western parts of the delta experienced greater disturbance to wetland landscapes due to human activities, while the northern and southern parts were mostly waters and reed lands with a smaller degree of human disturbance. Human activities have led to significant changes in farmland, ponds, rice paddies, construction land, and reed fields, thereby promoting the evolution of coastal wetlands. Discussion: This article discusses the characteristics of landscape pattern evolution in the study area, as well as the impact of human interference, economy, policies, and other factors on it, and compares it with the evolution patterns of other coastal wetlands in China. The changes in the landscape pattern of the study area are mainly reflected in the reduction and fragmentation of natural wetland areas, which are closely related to human activities, especially the development of construction and agriculture. The main economic manifestation is that the increase in land demand due to economic and urban development has led to the transformation of natural wetlands into construction land and other artificial landscapes. The implementation of regulations such as the Wetland Protection Law has contributed to the rational use and ecological restoration of wetlands, and also reflects the influence of policy factors. Compared with other studies, coastal wetlands in China generally face issues of degradation and loss, mainly caused by human activities, but also affected by natural factors such as rising sea levels, changes in coastlines, and climate change. As a highly urbanized bay area bustling with socio-economic activities, Shenzhen Bay is a pivotal stopover and wintering habitat for migratory birds along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. The Futian Mangrove National Important Wetland, located in the northeast of Shenzhen bay, is a part of the Guangdong Neilingding--Futian National Nature Reserve. As the smallest national nature reserve in China, the wintering habitat of migratory birds has been significantly impacted by the compacted surrounding built-up environment. It has become an urgent need for refined high-quality ecological restoration for the habitats. This project leveraged Nature-based Solutions to develop a refined model for the ecological restoration of coastal wetland waterbird habitats in compact urban areas. By analyzing waterbird behaviors and habitat requirements, this model outlined six strategies: water surface expansion, water level control, hydrodynamic conditions improvement, shoal transformation, adaptive vegetation management, and disturbance control. To effectively guide the restoration implementation, high-, medium-, and low-adaptive approaches were proposed accordingly. After restoration in 2022, notable increases in target species, such as Platalea minor, were observed. The variety of waterbirds of the reserve in 2022 increased by 33% compared with 2021, while increased by 50.9% compared with 2016, significantly enhancing ecosystem services of the coastal area. As urban renewal in China is shifting towards spatial redevelopment, this model offers valuable insights for ecological restoration aiming at coastal wetland waterbird conservation across the country, and substantially supports establishing the "International Mangrove Center" in Shenzhen. The Yellow River Delta wetlands in China belong to the coastal wetland ecosystem, which is one of the youngest and most characteristic wetlands in the world. The Yellow River Delta wetlands are constantly changed by inland sediment and the influence of waves and storm surges, so the accurate classification of the coastal wetlands in the Yellow River Delta is of great significance for the rational utilization, development and protection of wetland resources. In this study, the Yellow River Delta sentinel-2 multispectral data were processed by super-resolution synthesis, and the feature bands were optimized. The optimal feature-band combination scheme was screened using the OIF algorithm. A deep learning model attention mechanism ResNet based on feature optimization with attention mechanism integration into the ResNet network is proposed. Compared with the classical machine learning model, the AM_ResNet model can effectively improve the classification accuracy of the wetlands in the Yellow River Delta. The overall accuracy was 94.61% with a Kappa of 0.93, and they were improved by about 6.99% and 0.1, respectively, compared with the best-performing Random Forest Classification in machine learning. Coastal wetlands provide valuable ecosystem services and understanding their response to past climatic changes may help predict their possible future responses. In this paper, we obtained records of pollen, algae, sediment grain-size, and other environmental proxies, from a late Holocene sediment core (CFD-E) from the Caofeidian area, on the northwest coast of the Bay of Bohai, China. Our results indicate three major stages of environmental change. During Stage I (3500–2800 cal yr BP), arboreal pollen content was high (mostly >60%), especially for Pinus and Quercus , and the PCA sample scores on Axis 1 were negative indicating that regional vegetation was temperate broadleaved forest and the climate was wet. During Stage II (2800–2350 cal yr BP), the arboreal pollen content decreased substantially (mostly <40%), and the PCA Axis 1 sample scores were positive indicating a decrease in forest vegetation, grassland expansion, and a drier climate. During Stage III (2350–1400 cal yr BP), the arboreal pollen content increased again (mostly >40%), although it remained lower than during Stage I, indicating that forests expanded under a relatively humid climate while the wetland area decreased slightly. Our results also record the 2.8 ka and 2.4 ka events of monsoon weakening, which were characterized by increases in herbaceous pollen (indicating grassland expansion) and the drying of the regional climate. There are several differences in the regional expression of these two climatic events. During the 2.4 ka event, Chenopodiaceae pollen increased substantially (average of 42.0%), indicating the expansion of halophytes; whereas during the 2.8 ka event, an increase in Artemisia indicates the occurrence of a dry climate throughout the region. We suggest that the aridity during the 2.8 ka event was triggered by decreased solar activity and the resulting changes in the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, which weakened the East Asian summer monsoon. Invasive smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) has been expanding rapidly through the coastal wetlands of eastern China and these changes negatively affect local birds. In the Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve (henceforth referred to as DMNNR), rapid degradation of spartina occurs after an increase in milu (Elaphures davidianus; hereafter elk) numbers and ecological hydrological engineering. We evaluated the impact of such degradation on the abundance and species diversity of birds in the DMNNR during 2017–2021. We found that the area covered by S. alterniflora decreased significantly in the study area at a rate of 310 ha per year and by 62% during 2017–2021 (p < 0.01). With this decrease in the S. alterniflora area, the species richness and abundance of birds first increased and then decreased. Songbird density clearly decreased but species richness did not significantly do so. This research demonstrated that during the initial stages of vegetation degradation, there was a positive effect on bird diversity. With the increasing vegetation degradation increases, both songbirds and waterbirds experience negative impacts. The DMNNR is an important stopover site for waterbirds in the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, and additional measures are needed to control vegetation degradation and to restore the native habitats for birds. Wetlands play an important role in ecological health and sustainable development, their spatial distribution and explicit thematic information are crucial for developing management and conservation measures. The Yellow River Delta is an important coastal wetland reserve in China, its wetland types are complex and diverse, natural and artificial wetlands are easily confused, making refined classification more difficult. To address this challenge, we proposed a new wetland mapping approach by combing hierarchical classification framework (HCF) and optimal feature selection. First, inheritance-based multiscale segmentation was carried out to obtain object-oriented images, and decision tree classification was used for preliminarily identify wetland and non-wetland. Second, recursive feature elimination and cross-validation (RFECV) was used to select optimal features, which was then utilized for wetland refinement extraction by using random forest (RF) algorithm. The experiments were performed based on Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and NASADEM datasets. The results show that effective wetland classification features can be selected by using RFECV. The feature scores are as follows, red edge index > spectral features > vegetation/water body index > backscatter coefficient > topographic features > texture features > location feature > urban index > geometric feature. The overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient of the method in this paper are 92.36 % and 0.915, which are 14.62 % and 6.68 % higher than using only HCF or only RFECV. Compared with the GlobeLand30 and CAS_Wetlands datasets, the refinement of wetland mapping in this paper is higher. This study provides a new idea in methodological selection for wetland information extraction, and the resulting coastal wetland map can be used for sustainable management, ecological assessment and conservation of the Yellow River Delta. Wetland contains various ground objects with high spectral similarity. How to accurately distinguish complex classes has become a challenge in wetland land cover classification. In this paper, low-rank representation with elastic net (ENLRR) and the kernel version of ENLRR (KENLRR) are proposed for coastal wetland land cover classification by using Gaofen-5 (GF-5) hyperspectral data of China. The main idea of ENLRR is to combine elastic net with low-rank representation, which replaces rank function with the combination of nuclear norm and Frobenius norm when constraining the coefficient matrix. The KENLRR method considers nonlinear characteristics of hyperspectral data, where a neighborhood filter (NF) kernel function is adopted to map the original data space into a higher dimensional feature space for better classification. In the experiments, three typical coastal wetlands in China: Yellow River Delta, Jiangsu Dafeng Natural Reserve, and Yangtze River Delta (Nantong) are adopted, and the proposed methods and seven comparison methods are used to conduct wetland land cover classification. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed ENLRR and KENLRR are effective in accurately distinguishing wetland ground objects and reliably mapping their distribution. More specifically, the KENLRR method can provide the best performance, and the OAs are 96.63%, 96.76% and 87.67% for the three wetlands, respectively. The land cover distributions and spatial patterns of the three wetlands are studied as well. Yellow River Delta is a typical estuarine wetland with abundant landscapes, Dafeng Nature Reserve is a coastal wetland with the block regular feature distribution in spatial, and Yangtze River Delta (Nantong) mainly includes river and flood plain, whose ecological environment is deeply affected by human activities. Water and sediment regulation scheme (WSRS) is an annual water conservancy project which aims to alleviate sand depositions and reduce flood risks in the Yellow River of China since 2002. There are few researches on the sand bar within Yellow River tail channel and its estuary from each WSRS effect, though these relative researches are important to be carried out for a better understanding of WSRS. By interpreting two GF-1 satellite images in the end of 2013 and the start of 2015 after carefully controlling some potential bias factors from the change of water level, precipitation or tidal, we compared and analyzed the change of sand bars by one WSRS implemented in 2014 in this paper. Our results indicated this WSRS changed obviously the area/shape of sand bars. It made the area of the river sand bar decreased totally by 5.55 km2, while the estuarine sand bar increased by 2.08 km2. And it achieved the highest scour efficiency (90.11%) in the straight channel, but it achieved the lowest scour efficiency (44.71%) in the more bends channel. From the prospect in the change of estuarine sand bar, the west side area increased, while the east side area shrank. • We use emergy analysis model to evaluate the ecosystem services. • The services supply and flow between ecosystems and urban area were identified. • Urban ecosystem has gradually transformed from a positive to a passive participant. • Attention should be paid to water supply and retention service of the wetland. Chongming Island, the largest alluvial island in the world, is an ecologically sensitive area. Due to its green space, farmland, estuaries and coastal wetlands and its proximity to the city of Shanghai (45 km, home to 24.2 million people), the island supports important agricultural and fisheries economies. This paper carries out an evaluation of the ecosystem services (ES) on Chongming Island, Shanghai, based on the emergy analysis method, identifying the service supply and flow between ecosystems and urban area. Results show that from the ecosystem-type perspective, the tidal wetland ecosystem provides the most service to Chongming Island, accounting for 45.2% ES emergy in 2012, followed by the agricultural ecosystem (34.5%) and the freshwater wetland ecosystem (6.3%). From ecosystem service-type perspective, water supply, flood storage and aquatic product supply are the main emergy outputs of the wetland ecosystem and account for 51.1%, 17.6% and 25.2% of the emergy, respectively. Food supply is the main emergy of the cropland ecosystem output and accounts for 58% of the emergy. Organic matter production and water retention are the main services provided by the forest ecosystem, accounting for 33.6% and 30.0% of the total emergy respectively. Based on the systematic emergy dynamic analysis, on the one hand, the wetland and forest ecosystems played more significant roles in water supply and retention while the cropland ecosystem had a less important role in food supply from 2002 to 2012. On the other hand, the urban ecosystem has gradually transformed from a positive to a passive participant in the role of supplier and user for ecosystem services. Suaeda salsa (L.) Pall. (S. salsa) acts as a pioneer species in coastal wetlands due to its high salt tolerance. It has significant biodiversity maintenance, socioeconomic values (e.g., tourism) due to its vibrant color, and carbon sequestration (blue carbon). Bohai Bay region, the mainly distributed area of S. salsa, is an economic intensive region with the largest economic aggregate and population in northern China. The coastal wetland is one of the most vulnerable ecosystems with the urbanization and economic developments. S. salsa in Bohai Bay has been changed significantly due to several threats to its habitat in past decades. In this paper, we analyzed all available archived Landsat TM/ETM+/OLI images of the Bohai Bay region by using a decision tree algorithm method based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform to generate annual maps of S. salsa from 1990 to 2020 at a 30-m spatial resolution. The temporal-spatial dynamic changes in S. salsa were studied by landscape metric analysis. The influencing factors of S. salsa changes were analyzed based on principal component analysis (PCA) and a logistic regression model (LRM). The results showed that S. salsa was mainly distributed in three regions: the Liao River Delta (Liaoning Province), Yellow River Delta (Shandong Province), and Hai River Estuary (Hebei Province, Tianjin). During the past 31 years, the total area of S. salsa has dramatically decreased from 692.93 km2 to 51.04 km2, which means that 92.63% of the area of S. salsa in the Bohai Bay region was lost. In the 641.89 km2 area of S. salsa that was lost, 348.80 km2 of this area was converted to other anthropic land use categories, while 293.09 km2 was degraded to bare land. The landscape fragmentation of S. salsa has gradually intensified since 1990. National Nature Reserves have played an important role in the restoration of suitable S. salsa habitats. The analysis results for the natural influencing factors indicated that precipitation, temperature, elevation, and distance to the coastline were considered to be the major influencing factors for S. salsa changes. In this paper, we summarize the Holocene environmental history of the lower Yangtze region, east China, based on the sedimentary records and microfossil diatom, pollen, fungal and charcoal data that were published in the past two decades. We then examine the linkage between changes in the coastal environment and the development of rice agriculture in the region, with reference to the available archaeological evidence and historical archives. Based on the sedimentary and archaeological evidence, we conclude that during the early Holocene sea-level movements and sedimentary processes significantly changed the region’s landscape from an open, brackish water environment to a largely enclosed, wetland system. This newly established freshwater marsh environment provided a habitat favourable to rice agriculture. The early Neolithic farmers took the opportunity presented to them and started rice cultivation in locations where freshwater wetland systems were established. During the middle Holocene, environmental conditions were largely stable, and the coastal wetlands evolved slowly. Environmental change was only a supportive player in the Neolithic cultural processes, because the Neolithic people were able to adapt to these changes and took advantages of the newly emerging marsh land for food collection and production. Around 4200 years ago, the prosperous Liangzhu society fell, but there is no evidence to suggest the fall was related to a significant environmental change. The coastal environment continued to evolve slowly during the late Holocene. But this period saw rapid technological development in irrigation and flood protection, and the environmental factor was reduced to background noise. Throughout the Holocene, the main strategy taken by the Neolithic people to cope with environmental change was migration to find better food sources. Along with this strategy was the development of technology in landscape management to ensure a more reliable food production in addition to food collection through hunting, gathering and fishing. High greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from aquaculture have contributed to global warming, arousing widespread concern worldwide. However, little is known about the historical evolution and future trends in research on GHG emissions from aquaculture. Here, we selected 553 papers on the GHG emissions from aquaculture from the Web of Science (WOS) Core Collection database to explore the knowledge base, research hotspots, and future development trends in this field by visually analyzing the number of publications, research power (countries, institutions, and authors), journal distribution, keyword co-occurrence, and reference co-citation. The results showed that the research field of GHG emissions from aquaculture has entered a rapid development stage (exponential function) since 2009, with Chinese research institutions and scholars playing a key role in this field. Research hotspots have shifted from inland freshwater aquaculture and monoculture to offshore aquaculture and ecological integrated aquaculture, respectively. Notably, an increasing number of studies have focused on the restoration of damaged coastal wetlands caused by land use and the enhancement of the blue carbon sink function to reduce GHG emissions. Spartina alterniflora (smooth cordgrass), China's most common invasive species, has posed significant challenges to native plant communities and coastal environments. Monitoring the invasion and dieback process of S. alterniflora by multisource high-resolution imagery is necessary to manage the invasion of the species. Current spatial analyses, however, are insufficient. As a result, we first extracted S. alterniflora by integrating multisource high-resolution images through the multiscale object-oriented classification method, then identified the expansion patterns of S. alterniflora on the seaward side by the landscape expansion index, and conformed the main drivers of S. alterniflora dieback on the landward side in the Jiangsu Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve. The findings revealed that the area of S. alterniflora decreased in size from 1511.26 ha in 2010 to 910.25 ha in 2020. S. alterniflora continues to grow to the sea and along the tidal creek on the seaward side, with a total increase of 159.13 ha. External isolation expansion patterns accounted for 65.16% of the total expansion patches, with marginal expansion patches accounting for 24.22% and tidal creek-leading expansion patches accounting for 10.62%. While the landward side showed a declining trend, the total area decreased by 852.36 ha, with an annual average change rate of 8.67%. S. alterniflora dieback was negatively related to the number of tidal creeks and positively related to the number of wild Elaphures davidianus and the length of artificial ditches. Our findings provide a scientific foundation for the ecological control of S. alterniflora. Concerning the ever-changing wetland environment, the efficient extraction of wetland information holds great significance for the research and management of wetland ecosystems. China's vast coastal wetlands possess rich and diverse geographical features. This study employs the SegFormer model and Sentinel-2 data to conduct a wetland classification study for coastal wetlands in Yancheng, Jiangsu, China. After preprocessing the Sentinel data, nine classification objects (construction land, Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora), Suaeda salsa (S. salsa), Phragmites australis (P. australis), farmland, river system, aquaculture and tidal falt) were identified based on the previous literature and remote sensing images. Moreover, mAcc, mIoU, aAcc, Precision, Recall and F-1 score were chosen as evaluation indicators. This study explores the potential and effectiveness of multiple methods, including data image processing, machine learning and deep learning. The results indicate that SegFormer is the best model for wetland classification, efficiently and accurately extracting small-scale features. With mIoU (0.81), mAcc (0.87), aAcc (0.94), mPrecision (0.901), mRecall (0.876) and mFscore (0.887) higher than other models. In the face of unbalanced wetland categories, combining CrossEntropyLoss and FocalLoss in the loss function can improve several indicators of difficult cases to be segmented, enhancing the classification accuracy and generalization ability of the model. Finally, the category scale pie chart of Yancheng Binhai wetlands was plotted. In conclusion, this study achieves an effective segmentation of Yancheng coastal wetlands based on the semantic segmentation method of deep learning, providing technical support and reference value for subsequent research on wetland values. The reclamation of coastal wetlands for agriculture has expanded considerably over the last 40 years in China. Wetland reclamation could substantially alter soil properties, but so far, a systematic analysis of the changes in soil chemical elements after reclamation is missing on a national scale. In this study, we synthesized 418 pairs of data from 41 experimental studies and investigated the responses of soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) contents to coastal wetlands reclamation in China. The results showed that SOC significantly decreased by 24.77% after reclamation, while TN and TP were significantly increased by 23.57% and 13.55%, respectively. The changes in SOC, TN, and TP after reclamation of coastal wetlands mainly occurred in the 0–40 cm soil layer but not in the deep soil layer. For different land use types, SOC was significantly reduced by 49.48%, 44.57%, and 32.91% after reclaiming wetlands to woodlands, paddy fields, and drylands, respectively. TN and TP were significantly increased by 32.22% and 13.54% after the reclamation of wetlands to drylands, respectively. The reclamation duration also had significant effects on those elements. Specifically, SOC gradually decreased with increasing reclamation duration, while TN and TP increased with the increased reclamation duration. Anthropogenic factors, such as land use types and reclamation duration, rather than climatic factors, dominated changes in SOC, TN, and TP contents after coastal reclamation. Further, our study showed a significant SOC reduction following reclamation, and given the importance of coastal blue carbon, it is essential to reduce wetland reclamation to protect coastal blue carbon. Habitat quality has been widely used as an important indicator in the evaluation of regional ecological security and ecosystem services. Previous studies have focused on the influences of urbanization on habitat quality, but the protection measures about how to respond to the dynamic changes of habitat quality patterns are still unclear. This study investigated the habitat quality in the metropolitan region of China (Shanghai) by using InVEST model, and analyzed its dynamic changes from 2000 to 2017 for the sake of providing different protection objects and measures for Shanghai. The results showed that the habitat quality index (HQI) in 2017 was 0.42, and the accumulated area percentages of less than 0.4 in HQI reached 46%, whereas the habitat quality in Chongming district was the highest. The HQI and habitat protected index (HPI) showed an obvious decline tendency from suburban area to downtown area. The HQI in Shanghai gradually declined from 0.56 in 2000 to 0.42 in 2017, and the deterioration area in habitat quality nearly covered 33% between 2000 and 2017. Additionally, the area proportion of the median habitat quality (0.4 < HQI ≤ 0.6) drastically dropped, but the areas of the low (HQI ≤ 0.2) and the high (HQI > 0.8) in habitat simultaneously expanded. Therefore, the valuable habitat in the western and southern coastal wetlands, Dianshan lake and Chongming district in Shanghai should be strictly protected, which covered 30% of the metropolitan area in Shanghai, and about 17% of the region located in the inner coastal zones and northern of Chongming Island was in urgent need of habitat restoration. Human disturbance is one of the essential driving forces of landscape evolution. The quantitative evaluation of the spatial and temporal characteristics of landscape evolution and its relationship with human disturbance are of great significance to regional ecological protection and management and are crucial for achieving coordinated socioeconomic development and ecological–environmental protection. In this study, we took the coastal wetlands in northern Jiangsu province, China, as the research area, and proposed a quantitative evaluation method for directional landscape evolution. On this basis, the spatiotemporal characteristics of the landscape evolution from 1980 to 2020 and the relationship with human disturbance were quantitatively evaluated by combining a human disturbance index and statistical methods. The results showed that: (1) The area of the natural wetlands decreased significantly over the past 40 years, while the areas of artificial wetlands and non-wetlands increased significantly. (2) The landscape evolution process was dominated by the degradation process. The main types of degradation were natural wetland conversion to artificial wetland and non-wetland areas and Spartina alterniflora invasion. The restoration type was mainly restoration among artificial and natural wetlands. (3) The degradation of wetland landscapes demonstrated a southward shift trend and the spatial consistency with the change of the human disturbance index was high (the correlation coefficient was 0.89). (4) The human disturbance index was significantly and positively correlated with the rate of degradation, with a correlation coefficient of 0.43, and was not significantly and positively correlated with the restoration rate, with a correlation coefficient of 0.14. The findings in this paper provide additional information and theoretical guidance for the control of coastal wetland development and utilization, as well as for achieving coordinated wetland resource development together with utilization and ecological protection in the coastal wetlands of Jiangsu province, China. However, the currently available moderate-spatial-resolution GPP algorithms and products may contain large uncertainties and may rarely meet the demands of tidal wetland research. In this paper, we examine two statistical methods, namely, simple linear regression and random forest regression, to capture the high spatial resolution GPP variations in the salt marshes in the Yangtze Estuary by integrating multi-source data, including eddy covariance, Landsat, and Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite data. The satellite-derived photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and normalized difference water index (NDWI) are used individually and in different combinations to drive the two statistical methods and investigate their performances in estimating the GPP. The results show that together with the PAR, the EVI generally has the greatest potential for GPP estimation (R2 > 0.75, RMSE < 6.80 μmol m−2 s−1) based on simple linear regression. However, the NDVI outperforms the EVI in wetlands with little tidal flooding and plant litter. The random forest method improves the performance in terms of upscaling the GPP measurements to large regions, and the combination of the EVI, NDVI, NDWI, and PAR performs the best, indicating that the use of the more advanced algorithm and the incorporation of a remotely sensed index that reflects the tidal influence are beneficial to GPP estimation in coastal salt marshes. Moreover, using Landsat data with a high spatial resolution (30 m) yields a much more accurate GPP estimation than using MODIS data with a 500 m resolution. Our results demonstrate that the use of high spatial resolution data, the proper use of remotely sensed indices, and the incorporation of a good combination of these indices through an advanced algorithm such as a machine learning algorithm are vital for capturing the nearly instantaneous GPP variations in coastal wetlands at large spatial scales. Taking the core zone of Yancheng National Nature Reserve (YNNR) as an example, the landscape habitat stability was analyzed by Ecological Niche models from 1983 to 2021. The evaluation index system of landscape habitat stability was constructed from the 'State' and 'Trend' dimensions by using the 'State-Pressure-Response' model. The landscape structure changed significantly, showing a trend of continuous expansion of Phragmites australis (P. australis) marsh and Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) marsh, and first increase and then decrease of Suaeda salsa (S. salsa) marsh. The niche breadth ranged from 2.4297 to 2.6187, the highest value appeared in 1992 and the lowest value was found in 2017. The niche overlap was high in different years, and there was still more than 50% overlap in the nearly 40 years span. The niche value was the highest in 1992 and the lowest in 2017, showing the trend of rising first, then falling, and then rising. The annual gradient of the ecological niche was 0.0002 in 1983-1992, -0.0058 in 1992-2017, and 0.0025 in 2017-2021. The niche expansion value showed a slow upward trend, indicating a good development trend of landscape habitat. Coastal wetlands are natural complexes situated between terrestrial and marine ecosystems and are one of the most productive ecosystems in terms of global biomass production. However, under the influence of intensive human activity, global coastal wetlands have undergone rapid degradation. In this study, RS technology, landscape ecology, and object-oriented methods were used to interpret remote sensing images from different periods and analyze the dynamic changes in landscape patterns and their driving mechanisms in coastal wetlands in the Luoyangjiang River estuary from 1983 to 2021 by considering changes in the landscape pattern index. The results show that the patch areas of all the types of wetland landscapes in the Luoyangjiang River estuary changed, and the patch areas of mangroves and Spartina alterniflora increased. The patch density of the coastal wetlands increased significantly, the index of mangrove aggregation increased, and the index of separation decreased. From the perspective of the overall characteristic value of the landscape pattern, the landscape diversity index and the evenness index of the study area gradually increased, and the difference in the proportion of different types of landscape was reduced. Additionally, the patch number and patch diversity significantly increased, the maximum patch index and the spread index decreased, and the landscape separation index significantly increased. Rapid urbanization and the implementation of many ecological restoration projects were shown to be the main factors driving changes in the landscape indices of coastal wetlands in the Luoyangjiang River estuary. In the study period, rapid urbanization significantly reduced the area of coastal wetlands, and the implementation of ecological restoration projects increased the fragmentation, heterogeneity, and dispersion of wetland landscapes in the study area and decreased the aggregation of wetland landscapes. Monitoring spatiotemporal changes in tidal wetlands under the disturbance of human activities provides a strong basis for coastal wetland protection and restoration. Long-term serial remote sensing images and other historical data were collected and analysed to investigate the distribution of tidal wetlands of Yueqing Bay in 1969, 1981, 1993, 2003, 2013, and 2021, a case study across the past 50 years. The data revealed that human activities cumulatively caused the net loss of approximately 59.62 km2 in area of tidal wetlands during the observation period. Firstly, between 1969 and 1993, reclamation primarily accounted for the variation of the tidal wetlands. Furthermore, between 1993 and 2013, the invasion of Spartina alterniflora and mudflat aquaculture also became important influencing factors. Between 2013 and 2021, development activities eased, and mangrove planting area increased. Over the analysis period, the overall results revealed that the tidal wetlands in Yueqing Bay underwent a transformation process from the relatively simple effects of exploitation by reclamation to the collective influence of combined exploitation and restoration, increasing the overall diversity of Yueqing Bay tidal wetlands over the study period. Tidal flats provide ecosystem services to billions of people worldwide; however, their changing status is largely unknown. Several challenges in the fine extraction of tidal flats using remote sensing techniques, including tide-level and water-edge line changes, exist at present, especially regarding the spatial and temporal distribution of mangroves. This study proposed a tidal flats extraction method using a combination of threshold segmentation and tidal-level correction, considering the influence of mangrove changes. We extracted the spatial distribution of tidal flats in Beibu Gulf, Southwest China, from 1987 to 2021 using time-series Landsat and Sentinel-2 images, and further analyzed the dynamic variation characteristics of the total tidal flats, each coastal segment, and the range of erosion and silting. To quantitatively investigate the interaction between tidal flats and mangroves, this study established a regression model based on multi-temporal tidal flats and mangrove data. The results indicated that the overall accuracy of the tidal flat extraction results was 93.9%, and the kappa coefficient was 0.82. The total area of tidal flats in Beibu Gulf decreased by 130 km2 from 1987 to 2021, with an average annual change of −3.7 km2/a. In addition, a negative correlation between the tidal flat change area and mangrove change area in Shankou, Maowei Sea, and Pearl Bay was observed, with correlation coefficients of −0.28, −0.30 and −0.64, respectively. These results demonstrate that the distribution of tidal flats provides a good environment and expansion space for the rapid growth of mangroves. These results can provide references for tidal flats' resource conservation, ecological health assessment, and vegetation changes in coastal wetlands in China and other countries in Southeast Asia. This paper reports on monitored Suaeda salsa spectral response to salt conditions in coastal wetlands, using spectral measurements and remotely sensed algorithms. Suaeda salsa seedlings were collected from the Dafeng Elk National Nature Reserve (DENNR) in Jiangsu Province, China. We treated 21 Suaeda salsa seedlings planted in pots with 7 different salt concentrations (n = 3 for each concentration) to assess their response to varying salt conditions. Various plant growth indicators, including chlorophyll content, fresh weight, dry weight, and canopy hyperspectral reflectance, were measured. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc multiple comparisons of least-significant difference (LSD) were used to explore the physiological indicators of sensitivity to salt treatment. Red edge parameters and spectral reflectance indices were used to analyze spectral response to salt conditions and to investigate the potential for remotely sensing physiological parameters which are sensitive to salt conditions. The results indicated that among these physiological indicators, the total chlorophyll content differed significantly with salt conditions, being highest at 50 mmol/L, whereas the differences observed for the morphological parameters were highest at 200 mmol/L. In addition, new vegetation indices were significantly more responsive to salt concentrations than were traditional red edge parameters. The two vegetation indices, D854/D792 and (D792 − D854)/(D792 + D854), were the most sensitive to the total chlorophyll content, and these also strongly correlated with salt concentrations. An analysis of the responses of plant growth indicators to salt treatment showed that soil having a salt concentration of 50~200 mmol/L is most suitable for the growth of Suaeda salsa. These results suggest the potential for using remote sensing to effectively interpret the causes of salt-induced spectral changes in Suaeda salsa. This methodology also provides a new reference for the inversion model of estimating the total chlorophyll content of Suaeda salsa under different salt concentrations in similar coastal wetlands, whether in China or elsewhere. Conservation policies have been formulated for coastal wetlands in China, and exploration of conservation effectiveness based on waterbirds and their habitat is important for guiding conservation actions. We characterized the effects of conservation efforts on shorebird diversity, habitat area and quality using long-term remote sensing data, and shorebird survey data in the Yellow River Delta. From 1997 to 2021, habitat area, quality and population number significantly declined by 49.8% (r = −0.72, p < 0.05), 13.6% (r = −0.72, p < 0.05) and 60.67% (R2 = 0.77, p < 0.05). Before 2012, habitat area (decreased by 38.2%, r = −0.62, p > 0.05, slope = −0.25), quality (decreased by 10.53%, r = −0.68, p > 0.05, slope = −0.008), and population size (significantly decreased by 94.5%, r = −0.95, p < 0.05, slope = −7874.3) declined, and the decline in habitat area significantly contributed to population reductions (r = 0.79, p < 0.05). Since 2012, habitat area (increased by 14.3%, r = 0.71, p > 0.05, slope = 0.12), quality (increased by 17.12%, r = 0.83, p > 0.05, slope = 0.01), and population size (increased by 8.34%, R2 = 0.29, p > 0.05) slightly increased. The coefficients of variation for habitat area and quality, and population size were smaller after 2012 than before 2012. These results suggest that conservation actions maintained the stability of waterbird populations and their habitat; additional actions are needed to mediate the conservation of other degraded habitats along coastal wetlands. Spartina alterniflora is an invasive plant whose effects on macrobenthic communities are still unclear. The Rudong coast has been invaded by S. alterniflora for years. The effects of S. alterniflora on the macrobenthic community structure have rarely been investigated along the Rudong coast. As the Rudong coastal wetland is an important staging site for migratory birds along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, an alteration in its macrobenthic community structure may have implications for the conservation of coastal wetland birds and rare waterbirds along that flyway, since macrobenthos are a major food source for these migratory birds. We conducted a survey in the Rudong coastal wetland to compare the macrobenthic community structure and sediment properties between a S. alterniflora-invaded area and a bare mud flat. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the biomass, abundance, species number or biodiversity between the invaded area and the mud flat. However, there were significantly higher heavy metal concentrations in the invaded area, and the community structure was obviously altered. The dominant Mactra veneriformis in the bare mud flat was replaced by another surface-feeding bivalve, Laternula anatina, in the invaded area. Our study suggested that the growth stage of the plants might be an important factor when assessing the impact of S. alterniflora on the macrobenthic community structure. Short and sparse S. alterniflora plants altered the benthic environment and species composition but did not necessarily reduce the biodiversity, abundance or biomass of macrobenthos. The dominant bivalve (L. anatina) living in the sparsely vegetated area was abundant, small, and soft-shelled, which might make it a better food source for the birds than the hard-shelled bivalve (M. veneriformis). Thus, S. alterniflora cannot be simply classified as a threatening factor to the Rudong coastal wetland ecosystem, and its advantages must also be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to provide more scientific guidance for wetland bird protection, this study addressed the dynamics of the bird community sorted by ecotypes, classifications and threat categories from 2015 to 2019, and non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis, generalized additive models and the Mantel test were used to examine the relationships between bird communities and habitat types. The results showed that: (1) The abundance of birds peaked in 2017 at 88,258 individuals and then declined. Moreover, there was an inverse trend between species richness and abundance of birds, meaning greater abundance is associated with fewer species. (2) Swimming birds were dominant ecotypes and Anseriformes possessed the highest abundance. It was noteworthy that the abundance of critically endangered birds (Aythya baeri and Grus leucogeranus) and the species richness of endangered birds increased. (3) Building land and farmland had dominant impacts on the composition of bird community. Wading birds and birds in Gruiformes were significantly impacted by building land and farmland, and near threatened species were substantially influenced by farmland. Therefore, maintaining good connectivity between protected areas and surrounding areas is one of the best ways to effectively manage biodiversity of the target area. Bacteria play an important role in regulating carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S) in estuarine intertidal wetlands. To gain insights into the ecological and metabolic modes possessed by bacteria in estuarine intertidal wetlands, a total of 78 surface soil samples were collected from China's coastal intertidal wetlands to examine the spatial and seasonal variations of bacterial taxonomic composition, assembly processes, and ecological system functions through shotgun metagenomic and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Obvious spatiotemporal dynamic patterns in the bacterial community structure were identified, with more pronounced seasonal rather than spatial variations. Dispersion limitation was observed to act as a critical factor affecting community assembly, explaining approximately half of the total variation in the bacterial community. Functional bacterial community structure exhibited a more significant latitudinal change than seasonal variability, highlighting that functional stability of the bacterial communities differed with their taxonomic variability. Identification of biogeochemically related links between C, N, and S cycles in the soils showed the adaptive routed metabolism of the bacterial communities and the strong interactions between coupled metabolic pathways. Our study broadens the insights into the taxonomic and functional profiles of bacteria in China's estuarine intertidal soils and helps us understand the effects exerted by environmental factors on the ecological health and microbial diversity of estuarine intertidal flats. Coastal wetlands are key features of the Earth's surface and are characterized by a diverse array of coupled geomorphological and biological processes. However, the links between the distribution of biodiversity (for example, species and structural diversity) and the formation of coastal geomorphology are not well‐understood on a landscape scale most useful to coastal zone managers. This study describes the relationship between select geomorphological and biological mangrove community features (i.e. species composition and functional root type) in a landscape‐distributed coastal zone of Dongzhaigang Bay, north‐eastern Hainan Island, China. A total of 11 mangrove species and five functional aerial root types were encountered, with the location of species by root types being controlled by the elevation of the soil surface. Plank roots, prop roots and pneumatophores occupied the lowest intertidal elevations, while knee roots and fibrous roots of the mangrove fern, Acrostichum aureum, preferred the highest intertidal elevations. Surface sediment deposition in areas with mangroves was greater than deposition in non‐mangrove forest zones, establishing an important biological mechanism for this large‐area response because surface erosion/compaction was also more prominent within mangrove roots. Indeed, functional root type influenced the magnitude of deposition, erosion and compaction, with knee roots and pneumatophores being more effective in promoting deposition and preventing surface erosion/compaction than prop roots. These results indicate a potential role for vegetation type (especially functional root type) to influence coastal geomorphological processes at large landscape scales. While soil surface elevation is correlated to the distribution of mangrove species and functional root types, a significant feedback exists between elevation change and the capacity of those root types to influence coastal geomorphological differentiation within sustainable intertidal elevations. An enhanced understanding of geomorphological development, mangrove species distribution and functional root type may improve management to support nature‐based solutions that adjust more effectively to sea‐level rise through feedbacks. The construction of an ecological security pattern can effectively overcome the contradiction between regional human exploitation and ecological protection in the coastal zone. Taking the Xiangshan Bay (XSB) basin as an example, this study identified ecological source areas from three aspects, namely ecosystem services' importance, ecological sensitivity, and landscape connectivity, and then constructed ecological resistance surfaces, identified ecological corridors, and constructed an ecological security pattern. The results show that the natural reserves in the XSB basin were all located in the identified primary ecological source areas, thus indicating the feasibility and reliability of the "importance–connectivity–sensitivity" ecological source identification mechanism in this study. The ecological corridor in the coastal wetland area accounts for about 40% of the total corridor length, which is the link connecting other ecological sources, revealing the important role of coastal wetlands in the coastal ecosystem. Through the ecological security pattern of the XSB basin and field investigation, we put forward suggestions such as clearing Spartina alterniflora, restoring salt marsh wetland vegetation, and strengthening follow-up monitoring for the restoration of coastal wetlands. Mapping different land cover types with satellite remote sensing data is significant for restoring and protecting natural resources and ecological services in coastal wetlands. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical classification framework (HCF) that implements two levels of classification scheme to identify different land cover types of coastal wetlands. The first level utilizes the designed decision tree to roughly group land covers into four rough classes and the second level combines multiple features (i.e., spectral feature, texture feature and geometric feature) of each class to distinguish different subtypes of land covers in each rough class. Two groups of classification experiments on Landsat and Sentinel multispectral data and China Gaofen (GF)-5 hyperspectral data are carried out in order to testify the classification behaviors of two famous coastal wetlands of China, that is, Yellow River Estuary and Yancheng coastal wetland. Experimental results on Landsat data show that the proposed HCF performs better than support vector machine and random forest in classifying land covers of coastal wetlands. Moreover, HCF is suitable for both multispectral data and hyperspectral data and the GF-5 data is superior to Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 multispectral data in obtaining fine classification results of coastal wetlands. Aims: Mangrove ecosystems can help mitigate climate change by sequestering significant amounts of carbon (C) from the atmosphere and ocean, contributing to regional "blue carbon" stocks. However, it is unclear whether non-native species introduced in coastal wetlands can function as a more efficient carbon sink. Methods: By examining two dominant mangrove species, native Kandelia obovata (KO) and exotic Sonneratia apetala Buch.-Ham. (SA), at the Qi'ao Island, China, we quantified and compared ecosystem C storage, C sequestration rate, source and stability of soil organic carbon (SOC) under different vegetation covers. Results & conclusion: Our results showed that both species acted as strong carbon sinks relative to mudflat reference, with overall ecosystem C storage being comparable under KO (410 Mg C ha−1) and SA with different stand ages (224–452 Mg C ha−1), but a few times higher than corresponding unvegetated mudflat. However, by excluding SOC accumulation from prior land use (i.e., unvegetated mudflat), non-native species (i.e., SA) showed a significantly higher ecosystem carbon sequestration rate (8.2–16.4 Mg C ha−1 yr−1) than native KO (4.5 Mg C ha−1 yr−1), owing largely to fast biomass carbon sequestration in SA ecosystem. Relative to mudflat reference, the input of autochthonous source (mangrove tissues) contributed substantially to additional carbon sequestration under mangroves. It should be noted that the relative size of carbon sequestration in non-native mangroves is also affected by factors related to ecosystem, climate, soil properties and land use, the differences still exist among locations, and ecosystem modeling with field validation is desirable for regional estimation of carbon stocks and sequestration rates. The transition from hunting and gathering to agricultural subsistence is a striking feature of the Neolithic revolution worldwide. Known as the cradle of a series of representative Neolithic cultures, south Hangzhou Bay (SHB) witnessed substantial changes in both landscape and human subsistence during the Holocene, yet the relationship between them was not well established. Here, we combined archaeobotanical results from sediment cores with archaeological findings to illustrate the subsistence changes during the Neolithic regime in the context of the landscape process in SHB. Our result showed that SHB was inundated by marine transgression 8,200 years ago without significant human imprints. At 8,200-7,600 cal yr. BP, the initial coastal wetland formation at locations with the semi-enclosed landscape would have facilitated the activities of hunting-gathering, incipient rice cultivation, and collecting seafood if accessible. Pollen and phytoliths evidence from multiple sediment cores in the Yaojiang Valley (YJV) suggested a desalinization process of wetland in the following hundreds of years. This amelioration of the environment had favored the intermittent rice cultivation at various locations in the YJV, where archaeological evidence was absent. Since 7,000-6,600 cal yr. BP, as freshwater wetland expanded with coastal progradation, a wide variety of food resources became available. Meanwhile, rice domestication began to serve as a crucial food supplement as evidenced by both microfossil results and archaeological findings. With the expansion of the coastal plain after 5,500 cal yr. BP, rice farming became widespread and rice consumption was increasingly important in the diet, as supported by discoveries of upgraded farming tools, abundant rice remains, and ancient rice paddies. Above all, the change of subsistence from hunting-gathering to rice farming exhibited an adaptive strategy in response to landscape evolution from an initial marine-influenced setting to a later coastal plain. Integrating the flow of supply and demand of ecosystem services (ESs) into the ecological security pattern (ESP) of coastal ecosystems with extremely fragile ecological backgrounds and contradictory human–land relationships is beneficial to the coordinated development of human–land systems. However, existing studies ignore the issue of scales of supply–demand linkages, making the ESP not properly guide sustainable development. Based on ESs delivery chain theory and landscape ecology approaches, we developed a sustainable development framework consisting of coupled microscopic natural–social systems. The method was tested using data from the Liao River Delta. In this study area, the natural supply potential and demand mapping distribution of key ESs were assessed to identify ecological sources in the Liao River Delta, a typical coastal zone in northern China. The resistance surface based on land use type assignment was modified using hydrological connectivity frequency and nighttime light intensity. Ecological corridors were extracted and optimized using a minimum cumulative resistance model and connectivity evaluation. The study found that the high supply area and the high demand reflection area are not consistent in location and supply level. Ecological source areas are evenly distributed, accounting for 12% of the total area. The ecological corridors are mainly concentrated in the west and southeast and do not cross the built-up areas in the east. This ESP framework safeguards the local demand for natural products and the natural potential to maintain services over the longer term and to a larger scale while informing the development of environmental management measures. Aim: Mangrove forests are important coastal wetlands for the blue carbon budget and play a significant role in mitigating global climate change. However, spatial patterns of carbon stocks in mangrove forests on an island scale have not been quantified owing to methodological limitations and lack of understanding of controlling factors. We took the entire Hainan Island as a case study and aimed to carry out a comprehensive investigation of the spatial patterns and driving factors of carbon stocks in mangrove forests. Location: Southern China. Time period: 2017–2020. Major taxa studied: Mangrove forest. Methods: The upscaling method combined with field surveys and Sentinel‐2 imagery analysis were used to compare different models for optimization of mangrove ecosystem carbon stock estimations. We also used structural equation modelling (SEM) to evaluate the factors driving the distributional patterns of mangrove carbon stocks on an island scale. Results: The current total mangrove carbon stock of the entire Hainan Island was estimated to be 703,181 Mg C (with a mean density of 192 Mg C/ha), with the above‐ and below‐ground carbon stocks averaging at 44.7 and 147.3 Mg C/ha, respectively. The mangrove carbon storage in the north‐eastern region of the island was the highest and in the west region the lowest. Sediment nitrogen content and plant species diversity had the most positive driving effects on the distribution of total carbon stock for Hainan Island mangroves. Main conclusions: The combination of field surveys and Sentinel‐2 imagery analysis can be applied to regional‐scale estimations of carbon stocks for mangrove forests. Spatial pattens of mangrove carbon stocks vary among locations on Hainan Island, and soil nutrient (especially nitrogen) availability is the dominant factor regulating carbon stock variations along the land‐to‐sea gradient. Mangroves are regarded as important settlement grounds and nurseries for fishes due to the sheltered nature of these ecosystems. To identify the drivers of temporal variations in fish assemblages, seasonal variations of fish assemblages and environmental variables were investigated in Nanliu River Estuary, China, from July 2019 to May 2020. In total, 17,680 individuals weighing 24,724.73 g belonging to 23 families and 45 species were collected. The dominant species were Ambassis urotaenia, Mugil cephalus, Coptodon zillii, Gambusia affinis, and Bostrychus sinensis. Fish assemblages were significantly different in seasonal periodicity according to the results of nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA). Kruskal–Wallis test results revealed that species richness, fish abundance, and biomass were significantly different, seasonally. The highest number of fish specimens captured was recorded in winter and summer, while the highest biomass was observed in autumn. Different ecological types of fish utilized mangroves in different ways. Hence, the findings in this study are instrumental in understanding and the conservation of mangroves even coastal wetland and fish resources in the process of mangrove restorations. Currently, it is a great challenge for remote sensing technology to accurately map mangrove forests owing to periodic inundation. A submerged mangrove recognition index (SMRI) using two high- and low-tide images was recently proposed to remove the influence of tides and identify mangrove forests. However, when the tidal height of the selected low-tide image is not at the lowest tidal level, the corresponding SMRI does not function well, which results in mangrove forests below the low tidal height being undetected. Furthermore, Spartina alterniflora Loisel (S. alterniflora) was introduced to China in 1979 and rapidly spread to become the most serious invasive plant along the Chinese coastline. The current SMRI has failed to distinguish S. alterniflora from submerged mangrove forests because of their similar spectral signatures. In this study, an SMRI-based mangrove forest mapping method was developed using the time series of Sentinel-2 images to mitigate the two aforementioned issues. In the proposed method, quantile synthesis was applied to the time series of Sentinel-2 images to generate a lowest-tide synthetic image for creating SMRI to identify submerged mangrove forests. Unsubmerged mangrove forests were classified using a support vector machine, and a preliminary mangrove forest map was created by merging them. In addition, S. alterniflora was distinguished from the mangrove forests by analyzing their phenological differences. Finally, mangrove forest mapping was performed by masking S. alterniflora. The proposed method was applied to the entire coastline of the Guangxi Province, China. The results showed that it can reliably and accurately identify submerged mangrove forests derived from SMRI by synthesizing low- and high-tide images using quantile synthesis, and the differentiation of S. alterniflora using phenological differences results in more accurate mangrove mapping. This work helps to improve the accuracy of mangrove forest mapping using SMRI and its feasibility for coastal wetland monitoring. The role of mangroves as a biogeochemical buffer for heavy metal pollutants in coastal wetlands has been demonstrated, but knowledge gaps still exist on the tolerant capacity of mangroves to aluminum (Al). This study assessed the growth and physiological response of viviparous mangroves Kandelia obovata and Bruguiera sexangula to Al stress. The two mangrove seedlings were treated with AlCl3 at concentrations of 0 (as control) to 100 mmol L−1, and the impact of Al on their growth and antioxidant parameters were determined. Additionally, the accumulation and translocation of metal elements were estimated in B. sexangula seedlings under relative long-term Al stress. K. obovata appeared to survive with a tolerance potential of 10 mmol L−1 AlCl3, whereas B. sexangula had a higher tolerant ability of 50 mmol L−1 AlCl3. Both root elongation and seedling growth were inhibited by Al stress. The exposure to 25–100 mmol L−1 AlCl3 induced increases in membrane lipid peroxidation and osmoprotectant molecule (proline) in mangrove seedlings. Both mangrove seedlings revealed significant changes in antioxidant enzyme activities that were attributed to Al stress-induced oxidative damages. The activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, and/or ascorbate peroxidase were differently impacted by the treatment time (7 days for short term versus 60 days for long term) and AlCl3 concentrations in K. obovata and B. sexangula seedlings. For B. sexangula seedlings, Al accumulation was in an order root > leaf > stem, whereas the translocation of metal elements in the aboveground tissues (leaf and stem) was differently impacted by Al stress. In conclusion, this study provides insights into different Al-tolerant abilities operated in two mangrove species that are widespread in coastal wetlands of China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seawater intrusion (SWI) is becoming one of the major environmental issues in more and more coastal areas around the world. Understanding the current SWI situation and forming research consensus are of great significance for further studies and coastal water resources management. In this study, we analyzed the SWI-associated literature available from the Science of Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) bibliographic database by using CiteSpace to further excavate existing research achievement. We explored a new method for identifying global geographic distributions of 501 coastal cities where SWI has been reported. It can be found that SWI is more likely to occur in well-recharged major basins (recharge rate 100–300 mm/a) or local shallow aquifers with high population density. According to current reports, about 32% of the coastal metropolitan cities (population > 1 million within 150 km from coastline) have been threatened. There was a 20-fold increase rate in the number of papers related to SWI compared to that in general science and technology. The United States of America, China, Australia were the top 3 contributors in SWI scope, contributed 46.4% of the total number of articles. More than 600 researches were supported by Chinese funds, which made China become the second contributor. But the number of citations per Chinese article was the lowest among the top 10 contributors. By co-citation analysis, we identified top 5% articles, and elaborated the background knowledge by taking Top 10 co-cited articles as example. A series of keywords with high co-occurrence were identified. Their meanings and relations were stated and graphically illustrated. As a keyword, SWI frequently appears in the following five research directions: analysis of the location or morphology of fresh and salt water interface, the prediction of groundwater quality, the geothermal circulation and tectonic activities, the coastal mangrove wetlands protection, and the management of water resources in coastal zones. We critically evaluated the bibliometric results and reviewed future opportunities and challenges for this field. The loss of natural wetland habitats along China's coasts has contributed to population declines in waterbirds, especially migratory shorebirds. Identifying important shorebird sites is important for habitat conservation and management. We integrated shorebird survey datasets from multiple sources (bird‐watching websites, survey reports, and published literature) for coastal wetlands in China and used the criterion of 1% of the global or flyway population (hereafter, Ramsar 1% criterion) and priority index Pi to identify conservation priority sites and corresponding prioritization rank. We used gap analysis to identify the conservation status of natural protected areas. Forty‐eight conservation priority sites, where 31 shorebird species met the Ramsar 1% criterion. The prioritization rank was very high priority for six sites, high priority for five sites, and priority for 37 sites. There were 28 conservation priority sites for shorebirds with conservation gaps, and these accounted for 58.33% of all 48 conservation priority sites. Of these unprotected sites, the prioritization ranks were very high priority or high priority for six sites, which were mainly concentrated in Jiangsu province. We recommend prioritizing the protection of these sites by creating new protected areas or incorporating these areas into the existing system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although pedotransfer functions (PTFs) have been routinely used for predicting soil bulk density (BD) in past decades, most of PTFs were developed based on empirical models that solely focused on statistical prediction. In this study, a causal‐based PTF that focused on mechanistic explanation and prediction was developed by using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS‐SEM). In an initial step, we identified key processes that theoretically affect BD variation, and assign measured variables for each process. This was achieved by investigating previous literature and researchers' experience based on characteristics of our study area. The proposed method was tested in an invaded coastal wetland in eastern China, with 45 samples. The causal‐based model explained 71% of the variance in BD variation, indicating a permissible fit to the data. The model showed that the direct effect of nutrient cycling, plant invasion, and depth dependence on BD was significant. The results suggested that the soil processes and their interactions identified in the model were beneficial not only to improve predictive accuracy based on the cross‐validation, but also to improve our understanding of BD variation from a system level. The findings highlight that a set of relative merits, such as no assumptions on the data and small sample size requirement, can improve the practical usefulness of PLS‐SEM in BD prediction applications. This study also highlights that PLS‐SEM may promote process‐based soil‐landscape modeling in terms of theory and methodology, especially for soil prediction or mapping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Species loss has attracted much attention among scientists for more than half a century. However, we have little information on the trends in phylogenetic and functional changes behind the species loss although this information is always asynchronous and important for conservation and management. We measured community trends in Anatidae (ducks and geese) for the last 50 yr to quantify trends in phylogenetic and functional diversity patterns coinciding with taxonomic historical dynamics. We used one‐way ANOVAs to test if there was a significant historical trend in communities of Anatidae. We characterized taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity of communities. For taxonomic diversity, we used species richness (SR). For phylogenetic diversity, we calculated the standardized effect size of mean pairwise distances (ses.MPD) and the standard effect size of mean nearest taxon distances (ses.MNTD) in communities. For functional diversity, we calculated functional richness (FRic), functional evenness (FEve), functional divergence (FDiv), and the community‐level weighted means (CWM) of trait values for diet, foraging stratum, and body mass, separately. From the 1950s to 2010s, species richness declined without significant trends. The ses.MNTD of Anatidae communities showed no clear trends. However, ses.MPD of Anatidae communities declined dramatically during this period. For functional diversity, functional evenness of diet, foraging stratum, body mass, and functional dispersion of diet, foraging stratum did not increase or decline significantly. However, functional evenness of all traits, functional richness, and functional dispersion of body mass showed declined trends. The basic phylogenetic diversity and species body mass of Anatidae communities declined significantly because of a declining trend in the relative independent branch of geese. This makes it more challenging for implement community recovery in the future. More attention in conservation biology should consider taxonomic diversity and asynchrony in phylogenetic and functional diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
