1. The effect of substrates on magnetic properties and structure of MnZn ferrite films by alternate deposition

Abstract

Mn(1-x)Zn(x)Fe(2)O(4) films were prepared by alternative rf-sputtering from targets of MnFe(2)O(4) and ZnFe(2)O(4). The films were deposited on substrates such as single-crystal Si(100), oxidized single-crystal Si(100), single-crystal Si(100) with ZnFe(2)O(4) underlayer and single-crystal MgO(100). The deposited films are amorphous. After annealing in vacuum furnace at 550 degrees C, the polycrystalline Mn-Zn ferrite crystallizes. The film with composition of Mn(0.5)Zn(0.5)FeO(4) shows better magnetic properties: high magnetization M(s) and lower coercivity H(c). The coercivity of the film deposited on MgO(100) substrate is the lowest. In this paper, the influences of substrate on film structure and the magnetic properties are investigated. It is believed that the magneto-elastic anisotropy resulting from stress in films dominates the coercivity of Mn-Zn ferrite films. The grain size may be refined to nanometer scale instrumentally by using suitable substrate; the stronger exchange coupling between grains would lead to a lower magneto-elastic anisotropy by averaging to the grains. Therefore, the soft magnetic properties of Mn-Zn ferrite films are improved.

Abstract

La-Zn doped M type Sr-ferrite thin films with various doping concentration were prepared by conventional rf diode sputtering. La-Zn doping reduces the grain growth rate, so that fine grains with mean grain size about 12nm were prepared with superior magnetic properties. It is found that suitable amount of La-Zn substitution may increase the Ms of the films, and modify the tempareture coefficient of coercivity, while Hc increases with increasing concentration of La-Zn.

Abstract

A method of introducing pinning sites in TbFeCo film by the using of focused ion beam was presented. The formed bulges in the film surface by discontinuous scan of light-dose focused ion beam have been proved to enhance the film's coercivity effectively. Coercivity increases almost linearly with the bulge density, giving the evidence of pinning effect contributed from those bulges predicted by domain wall pinning mechanism. Compared with the traditional way of etching the film for adjusting the coercivity, the method presented here shows superiority on reducing magnetic damage to film caused by the focused ion beam irradiation. Abstract

Abstract: TiN thin film is prepared by DC reactive sputtering in Ar+N2 atmosphere and its suitability as underlayer and overlayer for TbFeCo perpendicular recording media as well as its effect on the magnetic properties of the latter have been studied. Only 5nm TiN overlayer and 20nm under layer can successfully protect the TbFeCo film from oxidation. Initially the coercivity is increased sharply from about 2 to 6kOe for an increase of underlayer thickness to 60nm then the increasing rate of coercivity becomes very slow. The saturation magnetization remains almost constant with the underlayer thickness. The remanent squareness ratio remains constant at 1.0 with the underlayer thickness up to 60nm then decreases.
