The article discusses the possible mechanisms by which law can influence attitudes and behavior. It states that though it has been demonstrated empirically that it is difficult for law to achieve moral goals but some public interest groups spend considerable energy and resources to change the law with the goal of changing behaviors, cognition and emotions. It also highlights the informational and group influence of law on attitudes, the effects of salience, coordination, and social meaning on behavior. It takes a look on the backlash that can result from a mismatch between law and community attitudes.
