Marine tidal heterotardigrades (Echiniscoididae) have gained increasing interest owing to their unique adaptations and evolutionary position, bridging marine and limnoterrestrial taxa. Echiniscoididae was established to accommodate the marine genera Anisonyches and Echiniscoides. However, it has become apparent that Anisonyches , with its claw configuration, median cirrus and seminal receptacles, clearly has little or no affinity to tidal echiniscoidids with supernumerary claws. Consequently, we establish Anisonychidae fam. nov. to accommodate Anisonyches in a paraphyletic Arthrotardigrada and discuss its affinity to other heterotardigrade taxa. We recently split Echiniscoides into Isoechiniscoides and Echiniscoides s.l. The latter remains a miscellany of species complexes and undescribed genera, and it has become evident that a larger number of echiniscoidids belonging to Echiniscoides , Isoechiniscoides and undescribed genera coexist in intertidal sediments. Here, we erect Neoechiniscoides aski gen. nov., sp. nov. from Roscoff, France, which has a unique anal system, characterized by prominent lateral lobes with a set of wing-like structures. Phylogenetic analyses based on COI sequences infer a close relationship between N. aski , an undescribed species from Roscoff and unidentified species from Maine, USA. We propose that the new genus includes the former Echiniscoides species Echiniscoides pollocki and Echiniscoides horningi , which we hereby transfer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim To analyse the phylogeographical history of intertidal tardigrades in the North Atlantic in order to improve our understanding of geographical differentiation in microscopic organisms, and to understand the potential importance of the Mid-Atlantic Islands as stepping stones between the American and European coasts of the Atlantic Ocean. Location Twenty-four localities from the Mid-Atlantic Islands (Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands) and both sides of the North Atlantic Ocean. Methods A mitochondrial marker (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) was sequenced from individual tardigrades belonging to the genus Echiniscoides. The existence of cryptic species was detected using generalized mixed Yule coalescence analysis; lineage ages were estimated with relaxed clock methods; and the degree of geographical differentiation was analysed with samova analyses, haplotype networks and Mantel tests. Results Echiniscoides hoepneri, previously known only from Greenland, was recovered throughout the Mid-Atlantic Islands. The Faroe Islands population was isolated from Greenland and Iceland, but overall genetic variation was low. The morphospecies Echiniscoides sigismundi had high genetic variation and consisted of at least two cryptic species. A northern and a southern species were both recovered on both sides of the Atlantic, but only the northern species was found on the Mid-Atlantic Islands. The northern species showed signs of long-term isolation between the Western and Eastern Atlantic, despite the potential of the Mid-Atlantic islands to act as stepping-stones. There was no sign of long-term isolation in the southern species. The Mid-Atlantic individuals of the northern species were of Eastern Atlantic origin, but Greenland and Iceland showed signs of long-term isolation. The genetic pattern found in the southern species is not clearly geographical, and can probably be best explained by secondary contact between former isolated populations. Main conclusions North Atlantic intertidal tardigrades from the genus Echiniscoides showed strong geographical differentiation, and the Mid-Atlantic Islands seemed unimportant as stepping stones across the Atlantic. The heterotardigrade family Echiniscidae consists of 12 currently recognized genera that are generally represented by few species with the exception of the genera Echiniscus and Pseudechiniscus, which have numerous species. The echiniscids inhabit a wide variety of different moss and lichen substrates. Phylogenetic relationships within the Echiniscidae have previously been investigated using morphological characters. This study includes molecular data from the nuclear 18S and 28S genes and the mitochondrial COI gene, as well as the morphological data to investigate the incongruence between the studies by and and between morphology and molecules. The arthrotardigrades Batillipes and Florarctus and the echiniscoideans Echiniscoides and Oreella have been included as out-groups and ten genera of echiniscids as the in-group in the phylogenetic analyses. The data sets were analysed individually and combined with Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony. In this study, Echiniscidae was always inferred to be monophyletic in analyses of the combined data set (18S, 28S and morphology) excluding COI. The analyses inferred a ' Pseudechiniscus lineage' not including Mopsechiniscus. Furthermore, the inferred ' Pseudechiniscus lineage' only included part of the Pseudechiniscus species making the genus polyphyletic. The five Echiniscus species, which were included in the analysis, were monophyletic and sister-group to Testechiniscus (COI had Echiniscus paraphyletic). The clade [ Hypechiniscus, ( Echiniscus + Testechinsicus)] was also well supported. Parechiniscus was inferred to be the sister-group to all other echiniscid taxa, a phylogenetic position that corresponds well with its weakly sclerotized dorsal plates. The pulmonate snails of the genus Biomphalaria are widely distributed in the tropics, and they are intermediate hosts of the digenean trematode Schistosoma mansoni that causes intestinal schistosomiasis in humans. Recent molecular evidence suggests that Biomphalaria originated in South America, and following a recent transatlantic migration colonized Africa, where it radiated into the currently recognized 12 species. In the present study we further investigate the internal phylogenetic relationships of African Biomphalaria with emphasis on the dispersal and speciation on the continent, especially in the Great Lakes in East Africa. Our results, based on 16S ribosomal DNA, cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), and ribosomal internal transcribed spacer I (ITS1), support the monophyly of an African clade with two separate lineages ( Biomphalaria pfeifferi/ Biomphalaria camerunensis and the Nilotic species complex/ Biomphalaria angulosa). Following the initial colonization of Africa, Biomphalaria spread towards the east where a later radiation occurred in the Lake Victoria basin and the Albertine Rift Valley Lakes. With further dispersal along the River Nile, additional speciation took place giving origin to the North-east African species Biomphalaria alexandrina. Our results present almost no support of the species groups of Mandahl-Barth (except for the pfeifferi group), which is in accordance with other molecular appraisals. Our results suggest that Biomphalaria stanleyi, which is endemic to Lake Albert, is not an ecophenotype of the continental B. pfeifferi as previously suggested by other molecular studies. The freshwater snails belonging to the genus Melanoides Olivier, 1804 are widespread across tropical regions of the world and endemic species have evolved in the African Lakes Malawi, Mweru and Tanganyika. The endemic Melanoides species of Lake Malawi have been investigated several times during the last century, due to their large conchological variation, but no unambiguous answer regarding the number of species has been given. The phylogenetic relationship between morphs or genetic clones of Melanoides in Lake Malawi was inferred by phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data from the mitochondrial genes 16S and COI. Additional sequences from GenBank were included to investigate the relationship to other morphs from different parts of the world. For the first time, a putative secondary structure was developed for a partial region of 16S in this genus to identify the variability of the secondary structure in stems and loops. The molecular analyses indicated that several genetic clones exist in Lake Malawi and that M. tuberculata is a paraphyletic taxon. It is not clear from the results whether invasions or dispersals account for the complex situation in Lake Malawi. The basal position of M. admirabilis, endemic to Lake Tanganyika, in the inferred phylogeny indicates that Africa might be the origin of the genus. The results further indicate that three major clades of Melanoides, consisting of several genetic clones, are present in Lake Malawi; one clade consisting of invasive M. tuberculata, another of native M. tuberculata and a third consisting of the M. polymorpha-complex. It appears as if the unique development of morphs within the Melanoides genus in Lake Malawi has evolved primarily by divergence of genetic clones instead of species differentiation. The Planorbidae is the largest family of freshwater pulmonate snails, yet an understanding of their intrafamily phylogenetic relationships is lacking and existing inferences are tentative. Moreover, it has been suggested that the Ancylidae, limpet-like freshwater pulmonates, should be merged with Planorbidae according to analysis of internal organ morphology. The present study explicitly tests this hypothesis by phylogenetic inference from partial DNA sequences of three molecular markers, nuclear ribosomal small subunit 18S and the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase, and large subunit 16S. A molecular phylogeny was inferred based upon 22 taxa representing 12 ancylid and planorbid genera; additional taxa were included from the authors'' database and from available sequences from GenBank, to further explore this basic data set. Taxa from Acroloxidae, Lymnaeidae, and Physidae were used as outgroups. Ancylidae and Planorbidae were found to be paraphyletic, with Planorbidae including some members of Ancylidae. “Ancyloplanorbidae” was also found to be paraphyletic because Acroloxus (Acroloxidae) surprisingly was included. Burnupia was found to be ancestral to “Ancyloplanorbidae” (including Acroloxus). The following clades of Planorbidae were supported: Bulininae and Planorbinae, Biomphalarini (including Helisoma and Planorbarius), and Planorbini and Segmentini. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The freshwater gastropod family Viviparidae is nearly cosmopolitan, but absent from South America. On the African continent, two genera are recognized; the widespread Bellamya and the monotypic Neothauma, which is confined to Lake Tanganyika. Most of the African Bellamya species are confined to the major lakes of the Rift Valley area in Africa, i.e. Lake Albert, Lake Malawi, Lake Mweru, and Lake Victoria. The phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial (COI and 16S) and nuclear (H3, 18S and 28S) DNA inferred three major lake-clades; i.e. Lake Victoria/Kyoga/Albert, Lake Malawi and Lake Mweru/Bangweulu. The endemic B. rubicunda from Lake Albert and B. unicolor from Lake Kyoga were inferred to be part of the Lake Victoria clade. Bellamya capillata as identified by shell characters was polyphyletic in gene trees. The monophyletic Bellamya species radiation in Lake Malawi was most nearly related to the Lake Victoria/Kyoga/Albert-clade. Taxa from the Zambian lakes, Mweru and Bangweulu, were inferred together and placed ancestral to the other lakes. Neothauma tanganyicense was inferred as the sister-group to the Zambian Bellamya. Within the lake-clades the endemic radiations show very low genetic diversities (0–4.1% in COI), suggesting much faster morphological divergence than molecular divergence. Alternatively, Bellamya in Africa constitutes only a few species with several sub-species or eco-phenotypic morphs. The African viviparids were inferred to be the sister-group to a clade comprising Asian species, and the relatively low genetic diversity between the clades (12.6–15.5% in COI) makes a recent Miocene dispersal event from Asia to Africa much more likely than an ancient Gondwana vicarience distribution.
