MODal ENergy Analysis (MODENA) is an energy-based method, which is proposed to deal with vibroacoustic problems. The performance of MODENA on the energy analysis of a mechanical system under spatially correlated excitation is investigated. A plate/cavity coupling system excited by a pressure field is studied in a numerical example, in which four kinds of pressure fields are involved, which include the purely random pressure field, the perfectly correlated pressure field, the incident diffuse field, and the turbulent boundary layer pressure fluctuation. The total energies of subsystems differ to reference solution only in the case of purely random pressure field and only for the non-excited subsystem (the cavity). A deeper analysis on the scale of modal energy is further conducted via another numerical example, in which two structural modes excited by correlated forces are coupled with one acoustic mode. A dimensionless correlation strength factor is proposed to determine the correlation strength between modal forces. Results show that the error on modal energy increases with the increment of the correlation strength factor. A criterion is proposed to establish a link between the error and the correlation strength factor. According to the criterion, the error is negligible when the correlation strength is weak, in this situation the correlation strength factor is less than a critical value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An approach on determining elastic parameters and Coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of a 2.5-dimensional (2.5D) braided composites is proposed in this paper, by adopting mesoscopic mechanics integrated Finite element (FE) modeling. According to the geometric features of meso-structure, Representative volume cell (RVC) models of composite for predicting thermo-elastic parameters are established. On the basis of the models, homogenized parameter prediction is carried out in three steps: Firstly, equivalent elastic properties is predicted subject to periodic displacement boundary conditions; secondly, the equivalent thermal modulus is determined by using the periodic non-adiabatic temperature boundary conditions; thirdly, using the obtained elastic parameters and thermal modulus to calculate the equivalent coefficient of thermal expansion. A multiscale finite element analysis is conducted: The thermo-elastic parameters of yarn is calculated using the RVC model; subsequently, the equivalent parameters of the yarn are substituted into the RVC of 2.5D braided C/SiC composites, to predict the thermo-elastic parameters. Results indicate that the CTE determined by homogenized parameter prediction of 2.5D C/SiC composites shows good agreements with the experimental results. At last, the refined FE model and the equivalent homogeneous model are employed to verify the effectiveness of the predicted parameters in terms of effective modeling. After the comparative analysis on thermal modal data between refined model and equivalent model, the acquired results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in determining thermo-elastic parameters. Uncertainties are generally included in elastic parameters of the fiber reinforced textile composites. An approach on predicting the statistical characteristics of elastic modulus of braided composites using vibration test data is proposed in this paper. The method consists of two main steps, firstly estimate the initial mean values of the orthotropic elastic parameters by adopting the homogenization method, and then identify the variability of the elastic constants using a stochastic model updating algorithm with the first-order perturbation approach, the uncertain parameters are assumed as the summation of mean value and a deviation term with zero mean. A braided composite panel is employed in numerical simulations to verify the proposed method, the random samples of experimental modal data are simulated with the Latin Hypercube Sampling technique based on a reference finite element model, which is constructed by using deterministic updated elastic parameters. Results show that the mean value and standard deviation of the uncertain effective parameters of braided composite can be identified from modal data using the proposed stochastic identification method. The honeycomb sandwich composite material has been widely applied in engineering due to its excellent mechanical performance. The elastic properties of honeycomb core is of crucial importance in efficient mechanical analysis. An approach on determining the equivalent elastic modulus of honeycomb core using experimental modal data is proposed in this paper. Based on analytically predicted elastic constants of the pure core, the initial finite element model of a honeycomb panel is constructed using a three-layer sandwich theory; according to errors that exist in analytically estimated equivalent parameters and the sensitivity analysis of modal frequencies with respect to system parameters, the out-of-plane shear moduli G cxz and G cyz are selected to be determined. Consequently, the two parameters are determined by minimizing an objective function which is formulated with vibration test and numerical modal data. Comparative investigations are conducted to illustrate that the initial values of the parameters with physical significance play an important role in the identification procedure. Connection stiffness of bolt for thermal structures is analyzed. The bolt made of C/SiC material is employed in the study. The function between tightening torque and axial force under normal temperature is analyzed. Then the function is modified considering the influence of temperature. Finally, a novel method is proposed to identify the connection stiffness of bolt for high-temperature structures to circumvent the problem that the axial force is difficult to be measured under high temperature.
