This study investigated the impact of 'storage condition' and 'period of storage' on selected physico-mechanical properties and fracture reliability of a resin-based composite (RBC). Specimens, prepared from a nanofilled RBC (Filtek Z350 XT; 3M ESPE), underwent tests for degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength (σ), flexural modulus (E), and hardness. The specimens were initially grouped into dry storage at 37°C or wet storage in distilled water at 37°C. Subsequently, they were further divided into four subgroups based on the period of storage: 6, 24, 72, or 168 hours. Specimens tested immediately after preparation served as control. Data analysis employed two-way ANOVA and Weibull analysis (α = 5%). Compared to the control, an increase in DC was observed only after 72 hours of dry storage; σ showed higher values after both dry and wet storage, regardless of the storage period (except for the group wet-stored for 168 hours); E increased with dry storage for at least 24 hours or wet storage for 72 hours; and hardness increased after dry storage for at least 24 hours or wet storage for up to 72 hours. The Weibull modulus remained unchanged under any of the distinct storage conditions. Dry storage resulted in greater characteristic strength than the control, whereas wet storage contributed to higher strength values only at shorter periods (up to 24 hours). Overall, the inherent properties of RBCs with a similar composition to that tested in this study may change with varying storage conditions and periods.

Objectives: To evaluate the incorporation of repairing capsules containing different monomers and polymerization modulators on the self-healing efficiency of an experimental photopolymerizable resin-based composite., Methods: Self-healing capsules containing different monomers and polymerization modulators were prepared by emulsion polymerization: TC DHEPT (TEGDMA and DHEPT), BTC DHEPT (Bis-GMA, TEGDMA, and DHEPT), and BTC BPO (Bis-GMA, TEGDMA, and BPO). The capsules were analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The capsules were added into experimental photopolymerizable resin composites establishing the following groups: ER (Control without capsules), ER+BPO, ER+BPO+TC DHEPT , and ER+BTC BPO +BTC DHEPT . Filtek Z350 resin composite (3 M ESPE) was used as a commercial reference. The materials were tested for degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength (σf), elastic modulus (Ef), fracture toughness (virgin K IC ), self-healing efficiency (healed K IC ), and roughness. For statistical analysis, the significance value was established at an a = 0.05 level., Results: When compared to the control material, the incorporation of repairing capsules did not affect DC, σf, and Ef. Fracture toughness was statistically similar between the experimental groups (p ≤ 0.05). Healed K IC was statistically different between the groups ER+TC DHEP and ER+BTC BPO +BTC DHEPT ; the self-healing efficiency was higher for ER+TC DHEPT . Surface roughness was statistically similar among all groups., Conclusions: The use of self-healing capsules promoted repair of the material. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of irradiance and radiant exposure on the chemical-mechanical properties of a resin composite. A micro-hybrid resin composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray) was investigated under two different irradiances: low (300 mW/cm2) and high (800 mW/cm2) and radiant exposures: 8 and 16 J/cm2. Four groups, named Low 8 J/cm2, High 8 J/cm2, Low 16 J/cm2, and High 16 J/cm2 were tested, and their flexural strengths, elastic moduli, depths of cure, and degrees of conversion were evaluated. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. A multiple linear regression model was used to correlate the irradiance and radiant exposure with dependent variables (α = 0.05). Irradiance and radiant exposure were found statistically significant for all dependent variables. The interaction between the factors was statistically significant only for the degree of conversion and elastic modulus. Group Low 16 J/cm2 exhibited a significantly superior performance in all the evaluated properties. Barring the degree of conversion, no significant differences were observed among the properties evaluated between the Low 8 J/cm2 and High 8 J/cm2 groups. The adjusted R2 values were high for the depth of cure and degree of conversion (0.58 and 0.96, respectively). Both irradiance and radiant exposure parameters play an important role in establishing the final properties of a micro-hybrid resin composite. Irradiance has a greater influence under higher radiant exposures.

Despite all the advances in adhesive dentistry, dental bonds are still fragile due to degradation events that start during application of adhesive agents and the inherent hydrolysis of resin-dentin bonds. Here, we combined two outstanding processing methods (electrospinning and cryomilling) to obtain bioactive (antimicrobial and anti-metalloproteinase) fiber-based fillers containing a potent matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitor (doxycycline, DOX). Poly(ε)caprolactone solutions containing different DOX amounts (0, 5, 25, and 50 wt%) were processed via electrospinning, resulting in non-toxic submicron fibers with antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus. The fibers were embedded in a resin blend, light-cured, and cryomilled for the preparation of fiber-containing fillers, which were investigated with antibacterial and in situ gelatin zymography analyzes. The fillers containing 0, 25, and 50 wt% DOX-releasing fibers were added to aliquots of a two-step, etch-and-rinse dental adhesive system. Mechanical strength, hardness, degree of conversion (DC), water sorption and solubility, bond strength to dentin, and nanoleakage analyses were performed to characterize the physico-mechanical, biological, and bonding properties of the modified adhesives. Statistical analyses (ANOVA; Kruskal-Wallis) were used when appropriate to analyze the data (α = 0.05). DOX-releasing fibers were successfully obtained, showing proper morphological architecture, cytocompatibility, drug release ability, slow degradation profile, and antibacterial activity. Reduced metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) activity was observed only for the DOX-containing fillers, which have also demonstrated antibacterial properties against tested bacteria. Adhesive resins modified with DOX-containing fillers demonstrated greater DC and similar mechanical properties as compared to the fiber-free adhesive (unfilled control). Concerning bonding performance to dentin, the experimental adhesives showed similar immediate bond strengths to the control. After 12 months of water storage, the fiber-modified adhesives (except the group consisting of 50 wt% DOX-loaded fillers) demonstrated stable bonds to dentin. Nanoleakage was similar among all groups investigated. DOX-releasing fibers showed promising application in developing novel dentin adhesives with potential therapeutic properties and MMP inhibition ability; antibacterial activity against relevant oral pathogens, without jeopardizing the physico-mechanical characteristics; and bonding performance of the adhesive.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different photoinitiator systems on the cell viability and physico-chemical properties of an experimental adhesive resin of a two-step self-etch adhesive system., Methods: Eight photoinitiators and coinitiators were evaluated, camphorquinone (CQ); ethyl-dimethylamino benzoate (EDAB); diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPIHFP); 1,3-benzodioxole (BDO); piperonyl alcohol (AP); 1,3-diethyl-2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA); bisphenyl phosphinic oxide (BAPO); and diphenyl phosphinic oxide (TPO). Seven experimental adhesive resins (Bis-GMA:TEGDMA - 1:1 by wt%) were formulated by varying the initiation systems: R CQ+EDAB (control), R CQ+EDAB+DPHFP , R CQ+BDO , R CQ+AP , R CQ+TBA , R BAPO and R TPO . The cell viability of the different photoinitiators in their isolated form and after being incorporated into the adhesive resins was evaluated using the MTT assay. The degree of conversion within the hybrid layer (DC in situ) was evaluated by micro-Raman spectroscopy; the polymerization kinetics, by FTIR spectroscopy. The water sorption (Wsp) and solubility (Wsl) were calculated by using percentage of gain and loss of mass. Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests (α=0.05)., Results: When evaluated in their isolated form, the DPIHFP was considered cytotoxic in all concentrations evaluated. When incorporated into and adhesive resin, R CQ+TBA presented higher cell viability values than control and the highest values of DC in situ (p<0.05). Additionally, the use of CQ+TBA showed a higher cell viability when compared with the conventional CQ+EDAB system., Significance: The pair CQ+TBA could be potentially useful in the development of materials with improved biocompatibility., (Copyright © 2019 The Academy of Dental Materials. Objectives: This study investigated the physical and mechanical properties, antibacterial effect and biocompatibility of novel elastomeric temporary resin-based filling materials (TFMs) containing zinc methacrylate (ZM)., Material and Methods: Experimental TFMs were prepared by mixing the zinc methacrylate with monomer, co-monomer, photoinitiator and fillers. A ZM concentration of 0 (control), 0.5% (Z0.5); 1% (Z1), 2% (Z2), or 5% (ZM5) wt% was added to the TFMs. Fermit-N (F) was used for comparison with the experimental material. Microleakage, water sorption/solubility, degree of conversion, depth of cure, ultimate tensile strength, and hardness were determined and compared. A modified direct contact test (DCT) with Enterococcus faecalis and a Streptococcus mutans' biofilm accumulation assay was carried out to evaluate the antimicrobial effect and cytotoxicity of the assay. Statistical comparisons were performed (α=5%)., Results: The results showed that the physical and mechanical properties of the experimental TFMs with ZM are comparable with the properties of the commercial reference and some properties were improved, such as lower microleakage and water sorption, and higher ultimate tensile strength values. TFMs with ZM killed E. faecalis only after 1 h. Biofilm development of S. mutans was not affected by the inclusion of ZM in the experimental TFMs., Conclusions: The present findings suggest that the physical, mechanical and biological properties of the experimental TFMs with ZM are comparable with the properties of the commercial reference. However, some properties were improved, such as lower microleakage and water sorption, and higher ultimate tensile strength values.

Over the past years, significant effort has been dedicated to synthesizing low-shrinking formulations, however, development of dental composites with low volumetric shrinkage continues to be challenging. The purpose of this study was to synthesize a bisphenol allylic derivate (BPhADAC) and evaluate its inclusion in the formulation of a photopolymerizable dental composite resin, as a BisGMA diluent. Experimental (BisGMA/BPhADAC) and control (BisGMA/TEGDMA) photopolymerizable composites were prepared. Double bond conversion, polymerization kinetics, volumetric shrinkage, water sorption, solubility, and flexural properties were investigated. The experimental composite showed higher degree of conversion values, less volumetric shrinkage and less water sorption than the control composite (p < 0.05). In addition, flexural strength between the materials was found to be similar. The overall properties prove that the allylic monomer BPhADAC could be potentially useful in the formulation of low-shrinking dental composite resins., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. This study evaluated the shear bond strength (SBS) of self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs) to dentin and their physical-chemical properties. Five commercial SARCs were evaluated [SmartCem®2 - DENTSPLY (SC2); BisCem® - Bisco (BC); SeT PP® - SDI (SeT); Relyx U100® - 3M ESPE (U100) and YCEM® SA - Yller (YCEM)]. The SARCs were evaluated for SBS to dentin (n = 10) after 24 h, 6 months, and 12 months. The dentin demineralization caused by acidic monomers was observed by SEM, and pH-neutralization of eluate was observed for 24 h. Degree of conversion (DC), rate of polymerization (Rp), flexural strength (FS), and elastic modulus (E) were evaluated. Immediate SBS of SC2, SET, U100, and YCEM were statistically higher than that of BC (p < 0.001). After 12 months, all SARCs showed reduced SBS values and U100 showed values similar to those of SET and YCEM, and higher than those of BC and SC2 (p = 0.001). Demineralization pattern of SARCs was similar. At 24h, all SARCs showed no differences in the pH-value, except BC and U100 (p < 0.001). YCEM showed the highest Rp. U100, YCEM, and SC2 showed statistically higher FS (p<0.001) and E (p < 0.001) when compared with SET and BC. U100 and YCEM showed the best long-term bonding irrespective of the storage period. A significant reduction in SBS was found for all groups after 12 months. SBS was not shown to be correlated with physical-chemical properties, and appeared to be material-dependent. The polymerization profile suggested that an increased time of light activation, longer than that recommended by manufacturers, would be necessary to optimize DC of SARCs.

This study evaluated the anti-antibiofilm potential of silver methacrylate (Ag) or di-n-butyldimethacrylatetin (Sn) in experimental adhesive systems. Ag and Sn methacrylates were incorporated at 0.5mol%, 1mol% and 2mol% in an adhesive resin. The anti-antibiofilm potential, degree of conversion (DC), microtensile bond strength (μTBS), water sorption/solubility (W SR/SL ), bonded interfaces pattern (SEM), cytotoxicity and leaching of Ag and Sn ions were evaluated. Data were statistically analyzed considering α = 0.05. Only Ag at 2% affected DC and μTBS. Ag at 1% and 2% and Sn at 1% and 2% showed anti-biofilm potential against Mutans streptococci. Ag at 1% and 2% and Sn at 2% showed a statistically significant difference to the control in W SR/SL (p < 0.05). The additions of metal methacrylate did not affect cell viability, being the adhesive resins statistically similar to controls. Leached metals of Ag were more than 100x higher than for Sn. Between the concentration tested, Ag and Sn methacrylate at 1% presented an anti-biofilm effect without altering the mechanical properties evaluated., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. The objective of this study was to compare selective physical-mechanical properties, antibacterial effects and cytotoxicity of seven temporary restorative materials (TRM): five resin-based materials [Bioplic (B), Fill Magic Tempo (FM), Fermit inlay (F), Luxatemp LC (L) and Revotek LC (R)], and zinc oxide-eugenol cement (IRM) and glass ionomer cement (GIC) as the controls. Material and methods The physical-mechanical properties were evaluated by determining microleakage (ML), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and Shore D hardness (SDH). In addition, the polymerization rate (Pr-1), depth of cure (DC), water sorption and solubility (WS/SL) were evaluated. The antimicrobial effects of the materials were assessed by biofilm accumulation of Streptococcus mutans (BT) and the direct contact test (DCT) by exposure to Enterococcus faecalis for 1 and 24 h, and cytotoxicity by MTT assay. The data were analyzed by ANOVA or Kruskall-Wallis tests, and a complementary post-hoc method (p<0.05). Results Group B, followed by FM and GIC had significantly lower percentages of microleakage in comparison with the other groups; Groups FM and L showed the highest WS, while Groups R and FM showed the significantly lowest SL values (p<0.05). Group R showed the statistically highest UTS mean and the lowest DC mean among all groups. Group F showed the lowest S. mutans biofilm accumulation (p=0.023). Only the Group L showed continued effect against E. faecalis after 1 h and 24 h in DCT. The L showed statistically lower viability cell when compared to the other groups. Conclusions These findings suggest the antibacterial effect of the temporary materials Fill Magic and Bioplic against S. mutans, while Luxatemp showed in vitro inhibition of S. mutans biofilm accumulation and E. faecalis growth. Regarding the cell viability test, Luxatemp was the most cytotoxic and Fill Magic was shown to be the least cytotoxic.

A randomized, double-blind, split-mouth clinical trial was performed compared the desensitizing efficacy of the resin-modified glass ionomer cement (GIC) ClinproTM XT (3M ESPE, Minnesota, USA) and the conventional GIC Vidrion R (SS White, Gloucester, UK) in a 6-month follow-up. Subjects were required to have at least two teeth with dentin hypersensitivity. Teeth were divided at random into 2 groups, one group received Clinpro XT and the other conventional GIC Vidrion R. Treatments were assessed by tactile and air blast tests using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) at baseline, after 20 minutes, and at 7, 15, 21, 30, 90 and 180 days post-treatment. Twenty subjects (152 teeth) were included. Both tests (tactile and air blast) showed a significant reduction of dentin hypersensitivity immediately after the application of Vidrion R and Clinpro XT (20 min). VAS scores obtained along the 6-month follow-up were statistically lower when compared to initial rates (p < 0.05). Both GIC were able to reduce dentin hypersensitivity up to 6-month post-treatment period without statistically significant differences among them (p > 0.05). Both cements provided satisfactory results in long-term dental sensitivity reduction.

Objectives: Resin adhesives (RA) have been applied between resin composite (RC) increments, but there is no consensus on the impact of this technique on the properties of the final restoration. This study evaluated the effect of the presence of RA between RC layers on physical properties, translucency and long-term color stability of the restorative material., Methods: Scotchbond™ Multi-Purpose (bond, 3M ESPE) and Adper™ Single Bond 2 (3M ESPE) were used as RA, and Filtek™ Z350 (3M ESPE) as RC. Specimens containing RA were prepared by applying 3 layers of the adhesive between 4 increments of RC; adhesive-free specimens were also used (control). Tests of water sorption and solubility, mechanical performance (microtensile cohesive strength, flexural strength, and flexural modulus, after immediate and long-term water storage), and translucency and color stability (after immediate and 1, 7, 90, and 180 days of water or wine storage) were performed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images were also taken from the fractured specimens (flexural strength test). Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey test (p<0.05)., Results: Scotchbond (SBMP) showed lower water sorption and solubility than the control (p<0.001), and an overall similar (p≥0.198, immediate tests) or higher (p≤0.019, long-term tests) mechanical performance. SBMP exhibited a rougher cross-sectional surface compared to the other groups. Translucency remained unaltered after 180 days of storage (p≥0.313), except for single bond that had increased translucency with wine storage (p<0.045). After 180 days, all groups changed color (p≤0.002), although more intensively when immersed in wine., Significance: The presence of RA within RC increments increased the physical stability of the material, being this effect more evident by using the hydrophobic unfilled adhesive resin (SBMP). Objectives: This study evaluated the performance of phenylbis (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)-phosphine oxide (BAPO) as an alternative photoinitiator in the polymerization kinetics (PK), flexural strength (σ) and elastic modulus (E) of a model dental resin., Methods: A monomer mixture based on Bis-GMA and TEGDMA was used as model dental resin. Initially a screening was performed to evaluate BAPO concentrations (0.125, 0.25, 0.50, 1, 2, and 4 mol%). Photoinitiator systems were formed with the combination of camphorquinone (CQ), ethyl-dimethylamino benzoate (EDAB), diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPIHFP), and BAPO. Groups with unitary photoinitiator systems (BAPO and CQ), binary (BAPO+EDAB, BAPO+DPIHFP and CQ+EDAB), ternary (BAPO+CQ+EDAB, BAPO+CQ+DPIHFP, BAPO+EDAB+DPIHFP and CQ+EDAB+DPIHFP) and quaternary (BAPO+CQ+EDAB+DPIHFP) were formulated for evaluation. Real-time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to investigate the PK and test mini-bending to evaluate σ and E., Results: When only CQ was used, a slow polymerization reaction was observed and a lower monomer conversion. When only BAPO was used as photoinitiator an increase in the polymerization rate was observed and conversion was higher than CQ+EDAB. The ternary system (BAPO+EDAB+DPIHFP) showed the highest polymerization and conversion rate, in short photo-activation time., Significance: BAPO it is a potential photoinitiator for the photopolymerization of dental materials., (Copyright © 2014 Academy of Dental Materials. Purpose: To evaluate the mechanical and physical properties of experimental HEMA-containing and HEMA-free resin adhesives., Materials and Methods: Experimental HEMA-free adhesives containing alternative dimethacrylates (bis-EMA 10 [B10], bis-EMA 30 [B30], PEG 400 [P400], PEG 1000 [P1000], PEG 400 UDMA [UP400]) were formulated and compared with a HEMA-containing adhesive (control). The adhesives were characterized by rheological analysis, polymerization kinetics (PK), water sorption (WS), and solubility (SL) tests. Flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (E) tests were performed under dry or wet conditions (distilled water or 70% ethanol solution). One-way and two-way ANOVA as well as Tukey's test were used to evaluate differences between groups (p < 0.05)., Results: The control group showed the lowest viscosity and was the only one with a degree of conversion lower than 50%. The control and the P1000 adhesive showed the statistically significantly highest WS (p < 0.05). The control and the UP400 adhesive showed the highest FS and E, and the dry-stored specimens showed more improved mechanical strength than did the wet-stored specimens (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The physicomechanical properties of some of the HEMA-free adhesives were substantially improved when compared with those of the control, indicating that they could be potential monomers for the development of HEMA-free adhesive systems.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reactivity and polymerization kinetics behavior of a model dental adhesive resin with water-soluble initiator systems., Methods: A monomer blend based on Bis-GMA, TEGDMA and HEMA was used as a model dental adhesive resin, which was polymerized using a thioxanthone type (QTX) as a photoinitiator. Binary and ternary photoinitiator systems were formulated using 1mol% of each initiator. The co-initiators used in this study were ethyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate (EDAB), diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPIHFP), 1,3-diethyl-2-thiobarbituric acid (BARB), p-toluenesulfinic acid and sodium salt hydrate (SULF). Absorption spectra of the initiators were measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and the photon absorption energy (PAE) was calculated. The binary system camphorquinone (CQ)/amine was used as a reference group (control). Twelve groups were tested in triplicate. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to investigate the polymerization reaction during the photoactivation period to obtain the degree of conversion (DC) and maximum polymerization rate (R(p)(max)) profile of the model resin., Results: In the analyzed absorption profiles, the absorption spectrum of QTX is almost entirely localized in the UV region, whereas that of CQ is in the visible range. With respect to binary systems, CQ+EDAB exhibited higher DC and R(p)(max) values. In formulations that contained ternary initiator systems, the group CQ+QTX+EDAB was the only one of the investigated experimental groups that exhibited an R(p)(max) value greater than that of CQ+EDAB. The groups QTX+EDAB+DPIHFP and QTX+DPIHFP+SULF exhibited values similar to those of CQ+EDAB with respect to the final DC; however, they also exhibited lower reactivity., Significance: Water-soluble initiator systems should be considered as alternatives to the widely used CQ/amine system in dentin adhesive formulations., (Copyright © 2012 Academy of Dental Materials. Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the surface roughness on the surface microhardness of experimental composites with varying filler concentration., Materials and Methods: Experimental resin composites were formulated by mixing Bis-GMA and TEGDMA in a 50/50% weight ratio and CQ/EDAB were added to make the material photosensitive. Silanized glass particles were incorporated in the resin blend in two concentrations: C50 with 50% and C75 with 75% in weight ratio. The surface roughness and the surface microhardness measurements were determined after every three finishing procedures with #280-, #600- and #1200-grit wet sandpapers, respectively. The data were analyzed statistically by Two Way ANOVA and Tukey's test, and comparisons were conducted using the Spearman's correlation test (p > 0.05)., Results: The surface roughness and surface microhardness were negatively associated (r = - 0.68) and the finishing procedures of both composites resulted in harder and smoother surfaces than the initial ones. Additionally, in a smooth circumstance, the higher content of fillers has not resulted in a composite with better microhardness and smoothness., Conclusion: Finishing procedures decreased the surface roughness and consequently improved the surface microhardness of the composites evaluated., Clinical Significance: Finishing and polishing procedures are effectives in reducing the surface roughness amplitude of composite materials and in improving their surface microhardness. Thus a microhardness test and any hardness evaluation must be conducted only after a properly finished and polished surface is achieved.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) on the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2). Mouse gingival explants were cultured overnight in DMEM and the expression of secreted enzymes was analyzed by gelatin zymography in buffers containing 5 mM CaCl(2) (Tris-CaCl(2)) in 50 mM Tris-HCl buffer with the addition of TEGDMA at different concentrations (0.62%, 1.25%, 2.5%, or 5.0% (v/v)). The gelatinolytic proteinase present in the conditioned media was characterized as matrix metalloproteinase by means of specific chemical inhibition. The matrix metalloproteinases present in the conditioned media were characterized as MMP-2 by immunoprecipitation. The eletrophoretic bands were scanned and the transmittance values were analyzed. Data was plotted and submitted to linear regression to investigate MMP-2 inhibition as a function of TEGDMA concentration. Three major bands were detected in the zymographic assays. These bands were characterized as MMP-2. Zymogene (72 kDa), intermediate (66 kDa) and active forms of MMP-2 (62 kDa) were inhibited by TEGDMA in a dose-dependent way. These findings suggest that TEGDMA could inhibit MMP-2 expression even at small concentrations.

This study evaluated the performance of composite restorations placed with two matrix and wedge systems 4 years after placement. In a split-mouth design, 23 patients were selected and received at least two class II restorations, one with metallic matrix and wooden wedge and the other with polyester matrix and reflective wedge. One dentist placed the 109 restorations, and all cavities were restored using Single Bond and P-60 (3M ESPE) according to the manufacturer's instructions. Polymerization was performed through occlusal (metallic matrices) or through the reflective wedge (polyester matrices). Restorations were evaluated and categorized as alpha (A), bravo (B), charlie (C), and delta (D; modified United States Public Health System criteria) at baseline and 4 years after placement. Both clinical aspects and interproximal radiographs were considered in the evaluation. Data were analyzed with Mann-Whitney and Friedman tests (α = 0.05). Fifteen subjects (78 teeth/102 proximal surfaces) were reassessed after 4 years. Considering comparisons within matrices in different evaluation time points, no significant differences were observed (p > 0.05). Comparing 4-year to baseline results, the quality of marginal adaptation (40% and 40.4 %, score A), marginal staining (31.3% and 28.8%, score A), and roughness (56% and 46.2%, score A) decreased for metallic and translucent matrices, respectively (p < 0.05), while color match (9.6%, score A), occlusal contacts (75%, score A), and proximal contacts (71.7%, score A) also decreased in quality for translucent matrices (p < 0.001). Although the matrix and wedge systems evaluated showed similar clinical performance, there was clinical quality loss after 4 years, with most of the restorations being still acceptable, and no intervention was necessary.

To compare the resin-dentin bond degradation of 10 contemporary etch-and-rinse adhesive systems after one year of water storage, 100 bovine incisors were randomly separated into 10 groups and their superficial coronal dentin was exposed. According to manufacturers' instructions, dentin surfaces were bonded with one of seven two-step etch-and-rinse adhesives or one of three three-step etch-and-rinse adhesives. Composite buildups were constructed incrementally. Restored teeth were sectioned to obtain sticks (0.5 mm²). The specimens were subjected to a microtensile bond strength test after storage in distilled water (at 37°C) for one year. Data (MPa) were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Tukey's tests at α = 0.05. Of the adhesives tested, One Step, All Bond 2, and Optibond FL attained the highest bond strength to dentin after one year in water storage, while Magic Bond DE and Master Bond presented a high number of premature debonded flaws.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of Bis-EMA 30 on the resin-to-dentin microtensile bond strength (microTBS) and structural reliability of the experimental three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive systems., Methods: Five experimental primers containing different dimethacrylate monomer concentrations (0, 10, 20, 40, 60 wt% of the Bis-EMA 30, P0.P60) added to acid monomer and solvents (ethanol/water), and a resin bond (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA, 50/50 wt%) were formulated. The adhesive system Scotchbond MultiPurpose (SBMP, 3M ESPE) was tested as commercial reference. Sixty bovine incisors were randomly separated into six groups, and their superficial coronal dentin was exposed. After acid etching and rinsing, the excess water was removed from the surface with absorbent paper. Each experimental primer was actively applied (30 s), followed by a mild air stream (10 s). The experimental adhesive resin was applied and light activated for 20 s. Resin composite restorations were incrementally built up. The restored teeth were stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 24 h, and then sectioned to obtain sticks with a cross-sectional area of approximately 0.5 mm(2), after which 24 specimens per group were subjected to the microTBS test. Data (MPa) were analyzed by One-way ANOVA, Tukey test (alpha=0.05) and Weibull analysis., Results: The P40 group showed microTBS means similar to those of the control (SBMP), whereas both had statistically higher values when compared with the other groups (p<0.001). Moreover, P40 showed higher structural reliability, represented by the high Weibull modulus and characteristic strength values. The lowest microTBS was observed in the P0, P10 and P20 groups, which also had low structural reliability., Significance: Bis-EMA 30 is a promising monomer to be considered as a substitute for HEMA in adhesive system compositions., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Ltd. This study investigated the impact of immediate and delayed light activation on self-polymerization of a model dual-cured luting agent. The material presented the following components: base paste - 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxyprop-1-oxy)phenyl]propane/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), camphorquinone, dimethyl-p-toluidine, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), glass fillers; catalyst paste - bisphenol-A ethoxylated dimethacrylate/TEGDMA, benzoyl peroxide, BHT, fillers. The pastes were mixed and seven polymerization scenarios tested: immediate light activation using low (5Jcm(-2)) or high (20Jcm(-2)) energy dose; delayed light activation (after 2min - short delay) using low or high dose; delayed light activation (after 10min - long delay) using low or high dose; and self-polymerization only. The degree of conversion (DC) and rate of polymerization (R(p)) were evaluated for 30min by real-time infrared spectroscopy. The lowest DC was detected for the self-polymerized and immediate-low dose groups, whereas the immediate-high dose and short delay-high dose groups showed the highest values. For the self-polymerized and immediate-high dose samples, R(p)(max) was detected after approximately 7s, whereas this took approximately 14s for the immediate-low dose group. R(p)(max) for the immediate-high dose group was higher than for the self-polymerized sample, which in turn was higher than for the immediate-low dose group. R(p)(max) for the short delay groups was higher than for the long delay groups. In conclusion, the extent of self-polymerization was influenced by the light dose reaching the material, which was dependent on high radiant exposure for optimal polymerization and the moment at which the light was applied; the short delay increased the DC for lower doses, while also generally decreasing the R(p) for all scenarios.

This study investigated the impact of different photo-activation protocols on selected properties of a model composite formulated using bis-GMA/TEGDMA (1:1 mass ratio), camphorquinone/amine (1:2 mass ratio) and 75% of fillers. The protocols tested were: high-intensity continuous (HIC-500 mW cm(-2) for 20 s), medium-intensity continuous (MIC-250 mW cm(-2) for 40 s), low-intensity continuous (LIC-100 mW cm(-2) for 100 s) and pulse-delay-1 min or 3 min (PD-1 min/3 min-100 mW cm(-2) for 5 s + 1 or 3 min interval + 500 mW cm(-2) for 19 s). Degree of conversion (DC) was evaluated using infrared spectroscopy. Flexural strength (FS) and modulus (FM) were measured in three-point bending mode. Cross-link density was estimated by calculating the swelling coefficient (alpha) after immersion in chloroform. All methods showed similar values for DC except for PD-1 min, which showed lower DC. HIC and MIC showed similar FS, but were both different than all of the other methods. All curing methods showed similar FM, except for HIC, which presented a different modulus. PD-3 min showed a different swelling than all of the remaining groups, while HIC showed the lowest swelling. A significant relationship was observed between swelling and both FS and FM. In conclusion, the HIC activation protocol generated polymers with properties at least similar, and sometimes improved, in comparison with the alternative protocols.

This study evaluated the effect of organic solvent concentration on the polymerization kinetics for a model dental adhesive resin containing a ternary photoinitiator system. A monomer blend based on the bis-GMA, TEGDMA, and HEMA was used as a model dental adhesive resin, which was polymerized using a binary system [camphorquinone (CQ) and ethyl 4-dimethylamine benzoate (EDAB)] and a ternary system [CQ, EDAB, and diphenyliodonium hexafluorphosphate (DPIHFP)]. Additionally, these blends had 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 wt % ethanol added. Real-time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to investigate the polymerization reaction over photoactivation time. Data were plotted, and Hill's three-parameter nonlinear regression was performed for curve fitting. The addition of a solvent to the monomer blends decreased the polymerization kinetics, directly affecting the rate of polymerization, delaying vitrification, and attenuating the Trommsdorf effect. The introduction of DPIHFP displayed a strong increase in reaction kinetics, reducing the solvent inhibition effect. After 10 s of photoactivation, the binary system obtained in 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% of ethanol, a degree of conversion of 44.6, 26.3, 13.4, 1.15, and 0.0%, respectively, whereas when a ternary system was used, the values were 54.6, 40.5, 27.4, 14.5, and 3.4%. An improvement was observed in the polymerization kinetics of a model dental adhesive resin when using a ternary photoinitiation system, making the material less sensitive to the residual presence of a solvent before photoactivation., (2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Since there is a lack of information on the surface properties of composite restorations achieved with standard polishing procedures after aging processes, this study evaluated the effects of immediate (IM) and delayed (DE) polishing on the surface roughness (Ra), microhardness (KHN) and microleakage (ML) of microfilled (Filtek A110) and hybrid (Filtek Z250) resin composites after one-year storage. Standardized preparations were made on the buccal surface of 256 bovine teeth, where half were restored with each composite. For each composite, the specimens were randomly allocated to two subgroups. The first group (IM) was polished immediately after gross finishing using three different systems/techniques (n=16): Sof-Lex, Flexicups and Flexicups + Jiffy Polishing Brush + Flexibuffs (sequential), then stored for three weeks in saline. The DE group was stored for two weeks, polished with the same systems and stored for one week. From each subgroup, eight specimens were assessed after three weeks regarding Ra, KHN and ML (baseline), andthe eight remaining specimens were stored for one year before analysis. The data were analyzed (alpha=0.05) with ANOVA, paired Student's t-test (Ra and KHN) or Kruskal-Wallis and Signed Rank tests (microleakage). After one year, microfilled resin composite specimens showed the lowest Ra and KHN (p<0.05). N o differencein microleakage was observed among the different groups (p>0.05). The sequential technique provided the lowest roughness and Sof-Lex the lowest hardness (p<0.05). IM showed similar or better performance than DE for ML and Ra (p<0.05). In conclusion, aging increased the composites Ra and ML in all experimental conditions (p<0.05).

In large posterior cavities, indirect restorations could provide improved performance when compared to direct restorations, but with higher cost and removal of sound tooth structure. Improved mechanical properties have resulted in good clinical performance for amalgam in large cavities but without an esthetic appearance. Resin composites have become popular for posterior restorations, mainly because of good esthetic results. A restorative technique is presented that combines the esthetic properties of directly bonded resin composite and the wide range of indications for amalgam in stress-bearing areas.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of caries-detecting dyes on the microleakage of adhesive materials. Sixty cubic class V cavities were prepared on buccal and lingual surfaces of 30 human third molars. Coronal margins were located in enamel and gingival margins in cementum. The teeth were randomly divided into six groups of ten restorations each. Cavities were restored with an adhesive system (Single Bond, 3M ESPE, St. Paul, Minn., USA), a compomer (F2000, 3M ESPE), or a composite resin (Z100, 3M ESPE) according to the manufacturer's directions. Acid red dye (Seek, Ultradent, South Jordan, Ut., USA) and basic fuchsin dye (Vide Cárie, Inodon, Porto Alegre, Brazil) were tested. Control groups were prepared without the use of dyes. After 7 days of storage in distilled water, the restorations were polished and the teeth were subjected to thermal cycling followed by immersion in 2% methylene blue. The teeth were sectioned, and microleakage scores were evaluated under magnification (40x). Data were submitted to statistical analysis using the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test. A statistically significant difference ( P<0.05) in microleakage was found between the materials in cementum (Z100>F2000) but not in enamel. Control and experimental groups using dyes showed similar results. It was concluded that dyes for caries detection did not increase microleakage of the adhesive materials tested.
