Abstract The Angle of Attack (AOA) of the Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs) blades has a dominant role in the generation of the aerodynamic forces and the power generation of the turbine. However, there is a significant uncertainty in determining the blade AOAs during operation due to the very complex flow structures and this limits the turbine design optimization. The paper proposes a fast and accurate method for the calculation of the constantly changing AOA based on the velocity flow field data at two reference points upstream the turbine blades. The new method could be used to calculate and store the AOA data during the CFD simulations without the need for extensive post-processing for efficient turbine aerodynamic analysis and optimisation. Several single reference-points and pair of reference-points criteria are used to select the most appropriate locations of the two reference points to calculate the AOA and It is found that using the flow data from the two reference points at the locations 0.5 aerofoil chord length upstream and 1 chord away from each side of the aerofoil can give most accurate estimation across a range of tested AOAs. Based on the proposed AOA estimation method, the performance of a fixed pitch and the sinusoidal variable pitch VAWT configurations are analysed and compared with each other. The analysis illustrates how the sinusoidal variable pitch configuration could enhance the overall performance of the turbine by maintaining more favourable AOAs, and lift and drag distributions. Summary: A comprehensive 3D, multiphase, and nonisothermal model for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell has been developed in this study. The model has been used to investigate the effects of the size of the parallel‐type cathode flow channel on the fuel cell performance. The flow‐field plate, with the numerically predicted best performing cathode flow channel, has been built and experimentally tested using an in‐house fuel cell test station. The effects of the operating conditions of relative humidity, pressure, and temperature have also been studied. The results have shown that the fuel cell performs better as the size of the cathode flow channel decreases, and this is due to the increased velocity that assists in removing liquid water that may hinder the transport of oxygen to the cathode catalyst layer. Further, the modelled fuel cell was found to perform better with increasing pressure, increasing temperature, and decreasing relative humidity; the respective results have been presented and discussed. Finally, the agreement between the modelling and the experimentally data of the best performing cathode flow channel was found to be very good. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to numerically investigate the effects of CO 2 dilution on the operation of an industrial micro gas turbine combustor in order to assess the possible application of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) for post-combustion CO 2 capture. A complete 3D model of the combustion chamber has been developed, taking into account the conjugate heat transfer (CHT) and radiation effects, and a detailed chemical mechanism has been employed in the framework of the Flamelet Generated Manifolds approach to model the combustion process. The importance of including the effects of conjugate heat transfer in the model has been demonstrated for both air-fired and EGR conditions. Also, combustion with EGR resulted in lower temperature levels with respect to the air-fired case and thus in reduced NO x production. Further, the increased presence of carbon dioxide has been observed to have an impact on both the flame speed and the flame stabilization mechanism. According to the numerical results, EGR can be a viable way to increase the CO 2 content in the flue gas of dry low-emissions (DLE) combustors, and therefore enhance the efficiency of post-combustion carbon separation. At the same time, due to the reduced temperature levels within the combustion chamber, it is possible to attain lower NO x emissions without compromising the combustion efficiency under the considered EGR levels. Abstract: This paper presents numerical calculations of the temperature field obtained for the case of a neonate placed under a radiant warmer. The results of the simulations show a very non-uniform temperature distribution on the skin of the neonate, which may cause increased evaporation leading to severe dehydration. For this reason, we propose some modifications on the geometry and operation of the radiant warmer, in order to make the temperature distribution more uniform and prevent the high temperature gradients observed on the surface of the neonate. It is concluded that placing a high conductivity blanket over the neonate and introducing additional screens along the side of the mattress, thus recovering the radiation heat escaping through the side boundaries, helped providing more uniform temperature fields. The influence of the shape of the downstream edge of trench film cooling hole outlets on film cooling effectiveness was investigated using CFD for flat plate film cooling. A 90 deg trench outlet wall with impinging 30 deg film cooling jets results in improved transverse film cooling effectiveness but produces a vertical slot jet into the cross flow, which is not the best aerodynamics for optimum film cooling. It was considered that improvements in the cooling effectiveness would occur if the trailing edge of the trench outlet produced a flow that was inclined in the direction of the crossflow. Beveled and filleted trench outlet shapes were investigated. The CFD predictions were shown to predict well the conven-tional sharp edged trench outlet experimental results for a flat plate geometry. The flat plate CFD predictions were also shown to predict the experimental results for trench cool-ing on the suction side of a turbine vane, where the local curvature was small relative to the trench width. The beveled and filleted trench outlets were predicted to suppress the ver-tical jet momentum and give a Coanda effect that allowed the cooling air to attach to the downstream wall surface. This produced an improved transverse spread of the coolant. Also, it was predicted that reducing the coolant mass flow per hole and increasing the number of rows of holes gave, for the same total coolant mass flow and the same surface area, a superior surface averaged cooling effectiveness. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) investigation was conducted to evaluate the accuracy and validity of the algebraic slip model in predicting the evolution of turbidity currents. The scenario used to run the model simulation was an experimental lock release of mono-disperse and bi-disperse turbidity currents. The general flow structure of the simulated currents compares well with the general experimental observation. The model used predicts the deposition from currents carrying coarse particles relatively well but excessively over-predicts the deposition rate in currents carrying fine particles. Incorporation of the Simonin model turbulence dispersion into the original model reduces the sediment deposition rate but incurs an excessive dispersion force. Thus, still another turbulence modulation model was incorporated into the finally proposed version and the mono-disperse flow was then re-simulated, and yet only small changes were observed in the results. Abstract: The main objectives of this paper are to present a procedure of how to create and set up a model for the physical processes that take place within an infant radiant warmer and to validate that Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can be used to resolve such problems. In this study, the results are obtained for a simplified model, both in terms of the geometry employed and the prescribed boundary conditions. The results were numerically verified in terms of the convergence history, monitor data and the physical correctness. This study shows that the physical situation is unsteady and the results tend to oscillate, almost periodically, around a mean value. The results presented in the paper are found to be in qualitative agreement with the experimental data. This gives us confidence that the techniques employed in this paper are appropriate and form the starting point for the inclusion of more realistic effects, e.g. real shape of the newborn and radiant lamp, heat generated inside the newborn, moisture transport, etc. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• The twist angle has the most significant effect on the winglet of VAWTs. • The winglet's influence increases along the blade span towards the tip. • A winglet can weaken the tip vortex and enhance the power coefficient of the VAWT. Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have been attracting an increasing attention in recent years because of their potential for effectively using wind energy. The tip vortices from the VAWT blades have a negative impact on the power efficiency. Since a winglet has been proved to be effective in decreasing the tip vortex in the aerospace field, this paper numerically studies the aerodynamic effect of appending a winglet on the blade of a VAWT. Based on the theoretical motion pattern of the VAWT blade, this paper simplifies the three-dimensional full-scale rotor simulation to a one-blade oscillating problem in order to reduce the computational cost. The full rotor model simulation is also used in validating the result. The numerical approach has been validated by the experimental data that is available in the open literature. Six parameters are applied in defining the configuration of the winglet. The orthogonal experimental design (OED) approach is adopted in this paper to determine the significance of the design parameters that affect the rotor's power coefficient. The OED results show that the twist angle of the winglet is the most significant factor that affects the winglet's performance. A range analysis of the OED results produces an optimal variable arrangement in the current scope, and the winglet's performance in this variable arrangement is compared with the blade without a winglet. For the single blade study, the comparison result shows that the optimal winglet can decrease the tip vortices and improve the blade's power performance by up to 31% at a tip speed ratio of 2.29. However, for the full VAWT case, the relative enhancement in the power coefficient is about 10.5, 6.7, and 10.0% for TSRs of 1.85, 2.29, and 2.52, respectively. The winglet assists in maintain the pressure difference between the two sides of the blade, thus weakening the tip vortex and improving the aerodynamic efficiency of the surface near the blade tip. Abstract: This study describes an investigation into predicting the major flow properties in wake-stabilised jet flames in a cross flow of air using first- and second-order turbulence models, applied within a RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes) modelling framework. Standard and RNG (re-normalisation group) versions of the k-ε turbulence model were employed at the first-order level and the results compared with a second-moment closure, or RSM (Reynolds stress model). The combustion process was modelled using the laminar flamelet approach together with a thermal radiation model using the discrete ordinate method. The ability of the various turbulence models to reproduce experimentally established flame appearance, profiles of velocity and turbulence intensity, as well as the combustion efficiency of such flames is reported. The results show that all the turbulence models predict similar velocity profiles over the majority of the flow domain considered, except in the wake region, where the predictions of the RSM and RNG k-ε models are in closer agreement with experimental data. In contrast, the standard k-ε model over-predicts the peak turbulence intensity. Also, it is found that the RSM provides superior predictions of the planar recirculation and flame zones attached to the release pipe in the wake region. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper describes the application of a commercially available, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model to simulate the flow structure in an upland river that is prone to flooding. Simulations use a rectangular channel geometry, smooth sidewalls and a bed topography obtained from the field site that contains a subdued pool–riffle sequence. The CFD model uses the RNG κ–ϵ turbulence closure scheme of Yakhot and Orszag (J. Sci. Comput. 1 (1986) 1), as implemented in FLUENT 4.4.4, with a free surface. Results are shown for numerical runs simulating a 1:100 year return interval flood. Output from the numerical model is compared to a physical model experiment that uses a 1:35 scale fibreglass mould of the field study reach and measures velocity using ultrasonic Doppler velocity profiling (UDVP). Results are presented from the numerical and flume models for the water surface and streamwise velocity pattern and for the secondary flows simulated in the numerical model. A good agreement is achieved between the CFD model output and the physical model results for the downstream velocities.Results suggest that the streamwise velocity is the main influence on the flow structure at the discharge and channel configuration studied. Secondary flows are, in general, very weak being below the resolution of measurement in the physical model and less than 10% of the streamwise velocity in the numerical model. Consequently, there is no evidence for a ‘velocity dip’. It is suggested that the subdued topography or inlet morphology may inhibit the development of secondary flows that have been recorded in previous flat-bed, rectangular open channel flows. A significant corollary of these results is that the morphological evolution of the pool–riffle sequence at high discharges may be controlled primarily by the downstream distribution of velocity and sediment transport with little role for lateral sorting and sediment routing by secondary flows. This paper also raises a number of issues that may be of use in future CFD modelling of three-dimensional flow in open channels within the geomorphological community. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
