The output of a photovoltaic array is reduced considerably when PV panels are shaded even partially. The impact of shading causes an appreciable loss in power delivery, since the PV panels are connected in series and parallel to contribute to the required voltage and power for the load. The prevailing research on mitigating the shading impact is mostly based on complex reconfiguration strategies where the PV panels are subjected to complex rewiring schemes. On the other hand, to disperse the shading many studies in the literature defend the physical rearrangement of the panels. The available intensive reconfiguration schemes, such as the series parallel (SP), bridge link (BL), honeycomb (HC), and total cross tied (TCT) schemes, try only to mitigate the shading impact and there is no scope for compensation; as a result, a loss of output power is inevitable. In the proposed research work, both the mitigation of and the compensation for the losses incurred due to shading are studied. In this work, an optimal reconfiguration scheme is adopted to reduce the shading impact and a power electronic circuit with a battery source is designed to compensate for the shading losses in all aspects. In the optimal reconfiguration scheme, a bifurcation strategy is adopted in each column and the electrical connections of the PV panels are interchanged such that the shading impact is dispersed. The power electronic circuit consists of a half-bridge buck converter with a battery source that injects the current required by a shaded column. This setup compensates for the shaded PV array’s power and improves the efficiency of the total system. The proposed scheme was implemented in a 3200 W system and subjected to various shading patterns, including single panel shading, corner shading, long and wide shading, and random shading. The proposed scheme was simulated in the MATLAB Simulink environment and compared with static 4 × 4 PV array configurations, including the series parallel (SP), bridge link (BL), honeycomb (HC), and total cross tied (TCT) configurations. The comparative performance was assessed in terms of mismatch power loss, fill factor, and efficiency. The proposed system is suitable for all shading patterns and was proved to be very efficient even in the worst shading, where 1353 W was saved.

This paper presents a neural-network based nonlinear behavioral modelling of I/O buffer that accounts for timing distortion introduced by nonlinear switching behavior of the predriver electrical circuit under power and ground supply voltage (PGSV) variations. Model structure and I/O device characterization along with extraction procedure were described. The last stage of the I/O buffer is modelled as nonlinear current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance voltage (C-V) functions capturing the nonlinear dynamic impedances of the pull-up and pull-down transistors. The mathematical model structure of the predriver was derived from the analysis of the large-signal electrical circuit switching behavior. Accordingly, a generic and surrogate multilayer neural network (NN) structure was considered in this work. Timing series data which reflects the nonlinear switching behavior of the multistage predriver’s circuit PGSV variations, were used to train the NN model. The proposed model was implemented in the time-domain solver and validated against the reference transistor level (TL) model and the state-of-the-art input-output buffer information specification (IBIS) behavioral model under different scenarios. The analysis of jitter was performed using the eye diagrams plotted at different metrics values.

The existing solutions for reducing total harmonic distortion (THD) using different control algorithms in shunt active power filters (SAPFs) are complex. This work proposes a split source inverter (SSI)-based SAPF for improving the power quality in a nonlinear load system. The advantage of the SSI topology is that it is of a single stage boost inverter with an inductor and capacitor where the conventional two stages with an intermediate DC-DC conversion stage is discarded. This research proposes inventive control schemes for SAPF having two control loops, the outer control loop regulates the DC link voltage whereas the inner current loop shapes the source current profile. The control mechanism implemented here is an effective, less complex, indirect scheme compared to the existing time domain control algorithms. Here, an intelligent fuzzy logic control regulates the DC link voltage which facilitates reference current generation for the current control scheme. The simulation of the said system was carried out in a MATLAB/Simulink environment. The simulations were carried out for different load conditions (RL and RC) using a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and PI controllers in the outer loop (voltage control) and hysteresis current controller (HCC) and sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) in the inner loop (current control). The simulation results were extracted for dynamic load conditions and the results demonstrated that the THD can be reduced to 0.76% using a combination of SPWM and FLC. Therefore, the proposed system proved to be effective and viable for reducing THD. This system would be highly applicable for renewable energy power generation such as Photovoltaic (PV) and Fuel cell (FC).

In the era of Industry 4.0, remote monitoring and controlling appliance/equipment at home, institute, or industry from a long distance with low power consumption remains challenging. At present, some smart phones are being actively used to control appliances at home or institute using Internet of Things (IoT) systems. This paper presents a novel smart automation system using long range (LoRa) technology. The proposed LoRa based system consists of wireless communication system and different types of sensors, operated by a smart phone application and powered by a low-power battery, with an operating range of 3–12 km distance. The system established a connection between an android phone and a microprocessor (ESP32) through Wi-Fi at the sender end. The ESP32 module was connected to a LoRa module. At the receiver end, an ESP32 module and LoRa module without Wi-Fi was employed. Wide Area Network (WAN) communication protocol was used on the LoRa module to provide switching functionality of the targeted area. The performance of the system was evaluated by three real-life case studies through measuring environmental temperature and humidity, detecting fire, and controlling the switching functionality of appliances. Obtaining correct environmental data, fire detection with 90% accuracy, and switching functionality with 92.33% accuracy at a distance up to 12 km demonstrated the high performance of the system. The proposed smart system with modular design proved to be highly effective in controlling and monitoring home appliances from a longer distance with relatively lower power consumption.

Optimal power sharing between parallel inverters and the demand load in microgrids is challenging and particularly critical for power grids in islanding operation. This paper introduces a novel control approach for managing parallel distributed power sources in the presence of variable load in islanding regime. The proposed scheme is based on the modified sliding mode control (MSMC) which is combined with the optimal Riccati control method to achieve convergence at the slip level with higher accuracy. The mathematical principles of the network equations are derived and its stability is obtained using the Lyapunov function. The MSMC simulation results are discussed in relation to the conventional droop method, while the laboratory evaluation was carried out to characterize its dynamic and static response. The results show that the proposed scheme control is able to manage the distributed power generation for static and dynamic load scenarios, and as such, guarantying microgrid frequency stability.

Since high voltage transmission line towers or wind turbines structures are installed in high-altitude areas, it is essential to achieve a high overvoltage protection system against direct and indirect lightning strikes collisions. The lightning current must be discharged quickly into the protective earth, to prevent the dangerous over-voltages formation and define a reference voltage node. This paper presents a novel model to assess the behavior of the grounding system, based on Pocklington integral equations under lightning magnetic fields and variations in soil ionization, in which an explicit circuit-based vector fitting RLC admittance branches are proposed. The frequency-dependent behavior of grounding system frequency response and soil ionization effect is modeled in time domain, straightly to implement into the electro-magnetic transient program (EMTP). The model verification contains horizontal, vertical, and their combinations of grounding grids to represent the complete investigations under lightning strikes. The harmonic impedance mathematical formulations and principles are derived based on a rational function, that could be applicable on ground potential rise (GPR) investigation.

This paper outlines some modifications to conventional active power filters (APFs) to compensate for the non-linearity of the load current. Since the APFs inject the required non-linearity of the load harmonic current to make the current source sinusoidal, a combination of passive power filters (PPFs) and APFs in series connection are more effective rather than individual usages. The proposed control approach based on sliding mode control (SMC) with a suitable sliding surface selection being applied to the proposed hybrid APF to increase the flexibility and reduce the complexity of the controller. An outstanding tracking process based on the reference current in the rotating dq frame is tested and guarantees the rapid convergence exponentially. An extra control loop is provided for DC link voltage regulation to minimize the DC ripples and control the APF three-phase output voltage levels. The presented solution provides an effective and straightforward load voltage support, maintaining an excellent dynamic performance in load changing and current compensation. The experimental results represent the authenticity of the proposed hybrid APF performance through several different tests, implying a feasible control approach for active filtering systems.

This paper aims to present a novel switched-capacitor multi-level inverter. The presented structure generates a staircase near sinusoidal AC voltage by using a single DC source and a few capacitors to step-up the input voltage. The nearest level control (NLC) strategy is used to control the operation of the converter. These switching states are designed in a way that they always ensure the self-voltage balancing of the capacitors. Low switching frequency, simple control, and inherent bipolar output are some of the advantages of the presented inverter. Compared to other existing topologies, the structure requires fewer circuit elements. Bi-directional power flow ability of the proposed topology, facilitates the operation of the circuit under wide range of load behaviors which makes it applicable in most industries. Besides, a 13-level laboratory prototype is implemented to realize and affirm the efficacy of the MATLAB Simulink model under different load conditions. The simulation and experimental results accredit the appropriate performance of the converter. Finally, a theoretical efficiency of 92.73% is reached.

The protection relay issues increase with the penetration of distributed generation (DG) units in distribution networks. Blind protection, sympathetic tripping and failure of reclosing are the frequent problems that are created by adding DG to the distribution networks. This research focuses on the impact of reclosers on overcurrent relay blind protection areas with DGs embedded in the distribution network. The protection blinding in overcurrent relays leads to a delay or non-tripping of the relay. The conventional solution for the blinding issue is to increase the sensitivity in the relay settings. The variation of relay settings may cause problems in the distribution network. This paper investigates the effect of reclosers on eliminating blind areas and improves the reliability in the presence of DG. In this way, possible blind points of the case study are detected, and recloser relays are then installed in appropriate locations. The case study is based on realistic data of a distribution network. The DG consists of two generators with a capacity of 4 MW. The simulation is performed in DIgSILENT software.

This paper presents a dynamic model of modular multilevel converters (MMCs), which are considered as an effective interface between energy sources and the power grid. By improving the converter performance, appropriate reactive power compensation is guaranteed. Modulation indices are calculated based on detailed harmonic evaluations of both dynamic and steady-state operation modes, which is considered as the main contribution of this paper in comparison with other methods. As another novelty of this paper, circulating current control is accomplished by embedding an additional second harmonic component in the modulation process. The proposed control method leads to an effective reduction in capacitor voltage fluctuation and losses. Finally, converter&rsquo, s maximum stable operation range is modified, which provides efficiency enhancements and also stability assurance. The proficiency and functionality of the proposed controller are demonstrated through detailed theoretical analysis and simulations with MATLAB/Simulink.

The development of energy storage systems and the transition to greener generation profiles, driven by global environmental concerns, have contributed to the transformation from traditional thermal generator–based microgrids to renewable energy–based systems. The main challenge of these solutions is to ensure flexibility, reliability and energy quality while providing ancillary services. This work presents the dynamic analysis of the behaviour of a microgrid (MG) integrating storage under different operational contexts and exposed to different fault scenarios. The proposed methodology allows to evaluate the contribution from Converter–Based Distributed Generation (CBDG) to fault currents in MGs, and the ability the system's protections have to suppress them. Moreover, it focuses on the dynamic response of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to different Short–Circuit (SC) faults. A MATLAB/Simulink simulation is developed, in order to model the connection of the MG envisioned in the DEMOCRAT project to the Low Voltage (LV) and Medium Voltage (MV) grids and its operation in isolated mode.

Current power systems will suffer from increasing pressure as a result of an upsurge in demand and will experience an ever-growing penetration of distributed power generation, which are factors that will contribute to a higher of incidence fault current levels. Fault current limiters (FCLs) are key power electronic devices. They are able to limit the prospective fault current without completely disconnecting in cases in which a fault occurs, for instance, in a power transmission grid. This paper proposes a new type of FCL capable of fault current limiting in two steps. In this way, the FCLs&rsquo, power electronic switches experience significantly less stress and their overall performance will significantly increase. The proposed device is essentially a controllable H bridge type fault current limiter (HBFCL) that is comprised of two variable inductances, which operate to reduce current of main switch in the first stage of current limiting. In the next step, the main switch can limit the fault current while it becomes open. Simulation studies are carried out using MATLAB and its prototype setup is built and tested. The comparison of experimental and simulation results indicates that the proposed HBFCL is a promising solution to address protection issues.

UID/EMS/00667/2019 The energy management of virtual power plants faces some fundamental challenges that make it complicated compared to conventional power plants, such as uncertainty in production, consumption, energy price, and availability of network components. Continuous monitoring and scaling of network gain status, using smart grids provides valuable instantaneous information about network conditions such as production, consumption, power lines, and network availability. Therefore, by creating a bidirectional communication between the energy management system and the grid users such as producers or energy applicants, it will afford a suitable platform to develop more efficient vector of the virtual power plant. The paper is treated with optimal sizing of DG units and the price of their electricity sales to achieve security issues and other technical considerations in the system. The ultimate goal in this study to determine the active demand power required to increase system loading capability and to withstand disturbances. The effect of different types of DG units in simulations is considered and then the efficiency of each equipment such as converters, wind turbines, electrolyzers, etc., is achieved to minimize the total operation cost and losses, improve voltage profiles, and address other security issues and reliability. The advent of wearable technology is fundamental to the dissemination of wearable personal health monitoring devices. Recent developments of biomedical sensors have decreased the form factor and power consumption that can be worn on a permanent basis. This paper discusses a low cost reflective photoplethysmography (PPG) system using a dedicated integrated circuit (IC) solution as the core of a wearable health monitoring device. The measurement of two physiological indicators is performed, namely the pulse rate (HR) and the blood oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ). The paper analyses in depth the PPG signals sensing architecture, guaranteeing high resolution measurements due to a delta-sigma analog to digital conversion unit. Post-processing digital filter operations are implemented to enhance low noise PPGs acquisition for physiological signals extraction. A complete system design is presented and a detailed evaluation is made in a real-time processing scenario. The test platform is completed with a PC based graphics application for on-line and off-line data analysis. Minimizing power dissipation is the main challenge in a wearable design. However, it restrains PPG signal measurement sensitivity by lowering signal quality. Using the developed prototype power consumption, studies concerning the characterization of power consumption and signal quality over various working conditions are performed. Next, a performance merit figure is proposed as the main research contribution, which addresses the power consumption and signal quality trade-off subject. It aims to be used as an analysis for trade-offs between these two conflicting design criteria.

For decades, industrial companies have been collecting and storing high amounts of data with the aim of better controlling and managing their processes. However, this vast amount of information and hidden knowledge implicit in all of this data could be utilized more efficiently. With the help of data mining techniques unknown relationships can be systematically discovered. The production of semiconductors is a highly complex process, which entails several subprocesses that employ a diverse array of equipment. The size of the semiconductors signifies a high number of units can be produced, which require huge amounts of data in order to be able to control and improve the semiconductor manufacturing process. Therefore, in this paper a structured review is made through a sample of 137 papers of the published articles in the scientific community regarding data mining applications in semiconductor manufacturing. A detailed bibliometric analysis is also made. All data mining applications are classified in function of the application area. The results are then analyzed and conclusions are drawn.

In recent years, power grid infrastructures have been changing from a centralized power generation model to a paradigm where the generation capability is spread over an increasing number of small power stations relying on renewable energy sources. A microgrid is a local network including renewable and non-renewable energy sources as well as distributed loads. Microgrids can be operated in both grid-connected and islanded modes to fill the gap between the significant increase in demand and storage of electricity and transmission issues. Power electronics play an important role in microgrids due to the penetration of renewable energy sources. While microgrids have many benefits for power systems, they cause many challenges, especially in protection systems. This paper presents a comprehensive review of protection systems with the penetration of microgrids in the distribution network. The expansion of a microgrid affects the coordination and protection by a change in the current direction in the distribution network. Various solutions have been suggested in the literature to resolve the microgrid protection issues. The conventional coordination of the protection system is based on the time delays between relays as the primary and backup protection. The system protection scheme has to be changed in the presence of a microgrid, so several protection schemes have been proposed to improve the protection system. Microgrids are classified into different types based on the DC/AC system, communication infrastructure, rotating synchronous machine or inverter-based distributed generation (DG), etc. Finally, we discuss the trend of future protection schemes and compare the conventional power systems.

Recently, the role of power electronics has been gaining special significance regarding energy conservation and environmental control. The reality is that the demand for electrical energy grows in a directly proportional manner with the improvement in quality of life. Transformerless inverters are the economic choice as power interfaces between photovoltaic (PV) renewable sources and the power grid. Without galvanic isolation and adequate power convert design, single-phase grid connected inverters may have limited performance due to the presence of a significant common mode ground current by creating safety issues and enhancing the negative impact of harmonics in the grid current. This paper proposes an extended H6 transformerless inverter that uses an additional power switch (H7) to improve common mode leakage current mitigation in a single-phase utility grid. The switch with a diode in series connection aims to make an effective clamp of common mode voltage at the DC link midpoint. The principles of operation of the proposed structure with bipolar sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) is presented and formulated. Laboratory tests&rsquo, performance is detailed and evaluated in comparison with well-known single-phase transformer-less topologies in terms of power conversion efficiency, total harmonic distortion (THD) level, and circuit components number. The studied topology performance evaluation is completed with the inclusion of reactive power compensation functionality verified by a low-power laboratory implementation with 98.02% efficiency and 30.3 mA for the leakage current.

DOI ei toiminut 29.10.2018 / mm In this paper, a function-based modulation control strategy for modular multilevel converters (MMCs) in a distributed generation (DG) system is proposed. Two novel modulation functions are introduced in this paper for the switching state functions of the lower and upper sub-modules of the interfaced MMC, which is considered as the main contribution of this control technique over other control methods. The amplitude and phase angle of the output current of the interfaced MMC can be easily applied to the proposed modulation functions to prepare a specific active and reactive power injection into the demand side. In addition, the equivalent capacitors of the lower and upper submodules are defined by taking into account the introduced modulation functions to guarantee an appropriate operation for the interfaced MMC in DG systems. Simulation results validate the capability of the proposed control method for MMCs under load variations.

In this paper, different complexity levels are analyzed for modeling photovoltaic cells. The electrical circuit approach is the technique mostly used to describe photovoltaic cell behavior. Single and double diode models are two typical representations for this purpose. The parameters number necessary to represent photovoltaic cells in single and double diode models are studied in this paper and its impact on characterizing I-P and P-V curves is explored to discuss parameters role in providing more accuracy. The modeling approach allows to adequately simulate photovoltaic array systems taking into account the compromise between the accuracy and simplicity. The mathematical models are implemented in Matlab/Simulink by using the Newton-Raphson method.

The aim of this paper is to avoid overloading a private customer distribution transformer (DT) in a Portuguese insular area through the means of a new smart electric vehicle (EV) charging scheduler. Firstly, the consequence of the penetration of EVs on the dielectric oil deterioration of the DT of the industrial unit is estimated. The workplace allows the EVs to charge while their owners are working at three different working shifts during a day. Secondly, the EV charging scheduler is tested and the result scenarios are analyzed. This paper shows that the scheduling solution enables the industrial unit to avoid overloading the DT. It also allows to reduce the loss-of-life (LoL) of the DT, while recharging all EVs connected at the beginning of each working shift.

The amount of energy generated from a photovoltaic installation depends mainly on two factors&mdash, the temperature and solar irradiance. Numerous maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques have been developed for photovoltaic systems. The challenge is what method to employ in order to obtain optimum operating points (voltage and current) automatically at the maximum photovoltaic output power in most conditions. This paper is focused on the structural analysis of mathematical models of PV cells with growing levels of complexity. The main objective is to simulate and compare the characteristic current-voltage (I-V) and power-voltage (P-V) curves of equivalent circuits of the ideal PV cell model and, with one and with two diodes, that is, equivalent circuits with five and seven parameters. The contribution of each parameter is analyzed in the particular context of a given model and then generalized through comparison to a more complex model. In this study the numerical simulation of the models is used intensively and extensively. The approach utilized to model the equivalent circuits permits an adequate simulation of the photovoltaic array systems by considering the compromise between the complexity and accuracy. By utilizing the Newton&ndash, Raphson method the studied models are then employed through the use of Matlab/Simulink. Finally, this study concludes with an analysis and comparison of the evolution of maximum power observed in the models.

Smart grid solutions with enabling technologies such as energy management systems (EMS) and smart meters promote the vision of smart households, which also allows for active demand side in the residential sector. These technologies enable the control of residential consumption, local small-scale generation and energy storage systems to respond to time-varying prices. However, shifting loads simultaneously to lower price periods is likely to put extra stress on distribution system assets such as distribution transformers. Especially, additional new types of loads/appliances such as electric vehicles (EVs) can introduce even more burden on the operation of these assets, which is an issue that needs special attention. Such extra stress can cause accelerated ageing of distribution system assets and significantly affect the reliability of the system. In this study, the impact of a smart neighborhood load on distribution transformer ageing is investigated. The EMS of each household is designed to respond to prices and other signals emitted by the responsive load serving entity within the relevant demand response (DR) strategy. An optimization framework based on mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) is presented in order to define the EMS structure. Then, the equivalent ageing of the distribution transformer is examined with a thermal model under different scenarios. The case studies that are presented indicate that the integration of EVs in residential premises may indeed cause accelerated ageing of the distribution transformers, while the need to investigate the efficiency of dynamic pricing mechanisms is rendered evident.

This paper explores different modelling techniques for representing electrochemical energy storage devices in insular power grid applications. Particular attention is given to Thevenin based and not Thevenin based models. A case study involving two insular power systems with renewable generation are used to stand out the performance of the selected battery technologies: Lithium-ion (Li-ion), Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lead Acid.

This paper presents an assessment of baseline and higher order grid security criterion applications on current power grid systems, with a focus on their implications in an island context. It considers the European grid code requirements for N-1 and higher order criteria as essential elements for the future deployment of insular distribution grid systems to improve security and stability. Consequently, in the opening section, major facts about island grid topology and current security challenges are illustrated based on a literature review. Afterwards, different approaches applied for security assessment are discussed. A summary of optimal power flow (OPF) approaches is given based on classic problem formulation, and a distribution grid security constrained assessment algorithm is proposed and assessed for island grid context.
